Abstract

Abstract JEM-EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAF in the framework of the JEM-EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM-EUSO, POEMMA, K-EUSO, TUS, Mini-EUSO, EUSO-SPB1 and EUSO-TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

Abstract

The data presented in this article are related to the research paper entitled “Observation of night-time emissions of the Earth in the near UV range from the International Space Station with the Mini-EUSO detector” (Remote Sensing of Environment, Volume 284, January 2023, 113336, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2022.113336).The data have been acquired with the Mini-EUSO detector, an UV telescope operating in the range 290-430 nm and located inside the International Space Station. The detector was launched in August 2019, and it has started operations from the nadir-facing UV-transparent window in the Russian Zvezda module in October 2019. The data presented here refer to 32 sessions acquired between 2019-11-19 and 2021-05-06. The instrument consists of a Fresnel-lens optical system and a focal surface composed of 36 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes, each with 64 channels, for a total of 2304 channels with single photon counting sensitivity. The telescope, with a square field-of-view of 44°, has a spatial resolution on the Earth surface of 6.3 km and saves triggered transient phenomena with a temporal resolution of 2.5 µs and 320 µs. The telescope also operates in continuous acquisition at a 40.96 ms scale.In this article, large-area night-time UV maps obtained processing the 40.96 ms data, taking averages over regions of some specific geographical areas (e.g., Europe, North America) and over the entire globe, are presented. Data are binned into 0.1° × 0.1° or 0.05° × 0.05° cells (depending on the scale of the map) over the Earth's surface. Raw data are made available in the form of tables (latitude, longitude, counts) and .kmz files (containing the .png images). These are – to the best of our knowledge – the highest sensitivity data in this wavelength range and can be of use to various disciplines.

Abstract

We established and evaluated a flask air sampling system on a cargo C-130H aircraft, as well as a trace gas measurement system for the flask samples, as part of a new operational monitoring program of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Air samples were collected during each flight, between Kanagawa Prefecture (near Tokyo) and Minamitorishima (an island located nearly 2000 km southeast of Tokyo), from the air-conditioning system on the aircraft. Prior to the operational employment of the sampling system, a quality assurance test of the sampled air was made by specially coordinated flights at a low altitude of 1000 ft over Minamitorishima and comparing the flask values with those obtained at the surface. Based on our storage tests, the flask samples remained nearly stable until analyses. The trace gas measurement system has, in addition to the nondispersive infrared (NDIR) and vacuum ultraviolet resonance fluorescence (VURF) analyzers, two laser-based analyzers using wavelength-scanned cavity ring-down spectroscopy (WS-CRDS) and off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (ICOS). Laboratory tests of the laser-based analyzers for measuring flask samples indicated relatively high reproducibility with overall precisions of less than ±0.06 ppm for CO2, ±0.68 ppb for CH4, ±0.36 ppb for CO, and ±0.03 ppb for N2O. Flask air sample measurements, conducted concurrently on different analyzers were compared. These comparisons showed a negligible bias in the averaged measurements between the laser-based measurement techniques and the other methods currently in use. We also estimated that there are no significant isotope effects for CH4, CO and N2O using standard gases with industrial isotopic compositions to calibrate the laser-based analyzers, but CO2 was found to possess isotope effects larger than its analytical precision.

4. Effect of fermented liquid diet prepared with Lactobacillus plantarum LQ80 on the immune response in weaning pigs

Abstract

Probiotics such as lactic acid bacteria directly influence the host’s health and have beneficial effects such as decreasing the number of enteric pathogens, regulating intestinal immune responses and preventing diseases. Among domestic animals, probiotics have been expected to be an alternative to antibiotics added in the diet; and fermented liquid diet (FLD) containing probiotics has great potential as a diet for reducing the use of antibiotics. In this study, we evaluated the immunomodulatory effects of FLD, prepared using Lactobacillus plantarum LQ80 (LQ80), on the immune response of weaning pigs. Ten weaning piglets were divided into two groups and were fed the FLD (n = 5) or a non-fermented liquid diet (NFLD) (n = 5) for 28 days. At the end of the experiment, the total immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels in the sera of the FLD-fed piglets were significantly higher than those of the NFLD-fed piglets (P < 0.05). In contrast, the total immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels in the feces and saliva were not significantly affected by FLD feeding. However, the mean fecal IgA levels of FLD-fed piglets at day 28 were higher than those at 14 and 21 days (P < 0.05). Blood cells from the FLD-fed piglets showed a low level of interferon-γ secretion and mitogen-induced proliferation compared to that of the NFLD-fed piglets. Furthermore, the levels of interluekin-8 and tumor necrosis factor-α, which are proinflammatory cytokines, in the blood cells of the FLD-fed piglets were lower than those of the NFLD-fed piglets (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the FLD used in this study could alter the immune responses of weaning piglets by stimulation of the systemic or mucosal antibody response, without unnecessary inflammatory reactions. This indicates, that the FLD feed prepared with the use of LQ80 may be a candidate feed, with regard to enhancing immune responses and preventing diseases in weaning piglets.

6. Modification of surface properties on a nitride based coating films through mirror-quality finish grinding

Abstract

In this study, we performed a specific precision grinding process in an attempt to improve the mirror-quality finish and tribological characteristics of titanium nitride based coating films (TiN, TiCN, and TiAIN). The ground surfaces were highly smooth with no evidence of cracking, chipping, or peeling, demonstrating that the hard coating films were finished uniformly. For the TiAIN coating, a significant high level mirror-quality finish was achieved with an average roughness Ra of 4 nm. In addition, for all films, the employed grinding process led to superior tribological characteristics. In the case of the TiN film, the precision grinding process produced a carbon- and copper-rich surface layer, as well as higher compressive residual stress.

Abstract

International audience; Mini-EUSO is a high-sensitivity imaging telescope that observes the Earth from the ISS in the near ultraviolet band (290÷ 430 nm), through the nadir-facing, UV-transparent window in the Russian Zvezda module. The instrument, launched in 2019, has a field of view of 44∘, a spatial resolution on the Earth’s surface of 6.3 km and a temporal sampling rate of 2.5 microseconds. Thanks to its triggering and on-board processing, the telescope is capable of detecting UV emissions of cosmic, atmospheric, and terrestrial origin on different time scales, from a few microseconds up to tens of milliseconds. The optics is composed of two Fresnel lenses focusing light onto an array of 36 Hamamatsu Multi-Anode PhotoMultiplier Tubes, for a total of 2304 pixels. The telescope also contains two cameras in the near-infrared and visible, an 8-by-8 array of Silicon-PhotoMultipliers and a series of UV sensors to manage night-day transitions. The scientific objectives range from the observation of atmospheric phenomena [lightning, Transient Luminous Events (TLEs), ELVES], the study of meteoroids, the search of interstellar meteoroids and strange quark matter, mapping of the Earth’s nocturnal emissions in the ultraviolet range, and the search of cosmic rays with energy above 1021 eV. The instrument has been integrated and qualified in 2019, with the final tests in Baikonur prior to its launch. Operations involve periodic installation in the Zvezda module of the station with observations during the crew night time, with periodic downlink of data samples, with the full data being sent to the ground via pouches containing the data disks. Mission planning involves the selection of the optimal orbits to maximize the scientific return of the instrument. In this work, we will describe the various phases of construction, testing, and qualification prior to the launch and the in-flight operations of the instrument on board the ISS.

Abstract

Mini-EUSO (Multiwavelength Imaging New Instrument for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory) is a telescope observing the Earth from the International Space Station since 2019. The instrument employs a Fresnel-lens optical system and a focal surface composed of 36 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes, 64 channels each, for a total of 2304 channels with single photon counting sensitivity. Mini-EUSO also contains two ancillary cameras to complement measurements in the near infrared and visible ranges. The scientific objectives of the mission range from the search for extensive air showers generated by Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) with energies above 10$^{21}$ eV, the search for nuclearites and Strange Quark Matter (SQM), up to the study of atmospheric phenomena such as Transient Luminous Events (TLEs), meteors and meteoroids. Mini-EUSO can map the night-time Earth in the near UV range (between 290-430 nm) with a spatial resolution of about 6.3 km (full field of view of 44{\deg}) and a maximum temporal resolution of 2.5 $\mu$s, observing our planet through a nadir-facing UV-transparent window in the Russian Zvezda module. The detector saves triggered transient phenomena with a sampling rate of 2.5 $\mu$s and 320 $\mu$s, as well as continuous acquisition at 40.96 ms scale. In this paper we discuss the detector response and the flat-fielding and calibration procedures. Using the 40.96 ms data, we present $\simeq$6.3 km resolution night-time Earth maps in the UV band, and report on various emissions of anthropogenic and natural origin. We measure ionospheric airglow emissions of dark moonless nights over the sea and ground, studying the effect of clouds, moonlight, and artificial (towns, boats) lights. Abstract

EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25th of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract

Reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide, can damage cellular components, such as proteins, lipids, and DNA. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes catalyze the conversion of superoxide anions to hydrogen peroxide and dioxygen. SOD is present in most lactococcal bacteria, which are commonly used as starters for manufacturing fermented dairy products and may have health benefits when taken orally. We assessed the effects of carbohydrate use on SOD activity in lactococci. In Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis G50, the SOD activity of cells grown on lactose and galactose was higher than that on glucose; in Lactococcus lactis ssp. cremoris H61, SOD activity was independent of the type of carbohydrate used. We also investigated the activity of NADH oxidase, which is related to the production of superoxide in strains G50 and H61. Activity was highest in G50 cells grown on lactose, lower on galactose, and lowest on glucose, whereas activity in H61 cells did not differ with the carbohydrate source used. The SOD and NADH oxidase activities of strain G50 in three carbohydrates were linked. Strain G50 fermented lactose and galactose to lactate, acetate, formate, and ethanol (mixed-acid fermentation) and fermented glucose to mainly lactate (homolactic fermentation). Strain H61 fermented glucose, lactose, and galactose to mainly lactate (homolactic fermentation). In strain G50, when growth efficiency was reduced by adding a metabolic inhibitor to the growth medium, SOD activity was higher than in the control; however, the metabolism was homofermentative. Aerobic conditions, but not glucose-limited conditions, increased SOD activity, and mixed-acid fermentation occurred. We conclude that the effect of carbohydrate on SOD activity in lactococci is strain dependent and that the activity of commercial lactococci can be enhanced through carbohydrate selection for mixed-acid fermentation or by changing the energy distribution, thus enhancing the value of the starter and the resulting dairy products.

Abstract

Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very important astrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highest energies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of the longitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples.

Abstract

We established and evaluated a flask air sampling system on a cargo C-130H aircraft, as well as a trace gas measurement system for the flask samples, as part of a new operational monitoring program of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Air samples were collected during each flight, between Kanagawa Prefecture (near Tokyo) and Minamitorishima (an island located nearly 2000 km southeast of Tokyo), from the air-conditioning system on the aircraft. Prior to the operational employment of the sampling system, a quality assurance test of the sampled air was made by specially coordinated flights at a low altitude of 1000 ft over Minamitorishima and comparing the flask values with those obtained at the surface. Based on our storage tests, the flask samples remained nearly stable until analyses. The trace gas measurement system has, in addition to the nondispersive infrared (NDIR) and vacuum ultraviolet resonance fluorescence (VURF) analyzers, two laser-based analyzers using wavelength-scanned cavity ring-down spectroscopy (WS-CRDS) and off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (ICOS). Laboratory tests of the laser-based analyzers for measuring flask samples indicated relatively high reproducibility with overall precisions of less than ±0.06 ppm for CO2, ±0.68 ppb for CH4, ±0.36 ppb for CO, and ±0.03 ppb for N2O. Flask air sample measurements, conducted concurrently on different analyzers were compared. These comparisons showed a negligible bias in the averaged measurements between the laser-based measurement techniques and the other methods currently in use. We also estimated that there are no significant isotope effects for CH4, CO and N2O using standard gases with industrial isotopic compositions to calibrate the laser-based analyzers, but CO2 was found to possess isotope effects larger than its analytical precision.

Abstract

It has recently been reported that the rare sugar d-allulose has beneficial effects, including the suppression of postprandial blood glucose elevation in humans, and can be substituted for sucrose as a low-calorie food ingredient. To examine the applications of d-allulose in the dairy industry, we investigated the effects of d-allulose on the acid production of 8 strains of yogurt starter (Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus) and 4 strains of lactococci, including potential probiotic candidates derived from dairy products. Acid production by 2 L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus yogurt starter strains in milk was suppressed by d-allulose, but this phenomenon was also observed in some strains with another sugar (xylose), a sugar alcohol (sorbitol), or both. In contrast, among the dairy probiotic candidates, Lactococcus lactis H61, which has beneficial effects for human skin when drunk as part of fermented milk, was the only strain that showed suppression of acid production in the presence of d-allulose. Strain H61 did not metabolize d-allulose. We did not observe suppression of acid production by strain H61 with the addition of xylose or sorbitol, and xylose and sorbitol were not metabolized by strain H61. The acid production of strain H61 after culture in a constituted medium (tryptone-yeast extract-glucose broth) was also suppressed with the addition of d-allulose, but growth efficiency and sugar fermentation style were not altered. Probiotic activities-such as the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory activity of H61-fermented milk and the superoxide dismutase activity of H61 cells grown in tryptone-yeast extract-glucose broth-were not affected by d-allulose. d-Allulose may suppress acid production in certain lactic acid bacteria without altering their probiotic activity. It may be useful for developing new probiotic dairy products from probiotic strains such as Lactococcus lactis H61.

Abstract

Ultra-precision grinding is primarily used to generate high quality and functional parts usually made from hard and difficult to machine materials. The objective of ultra-precision grinding is to generate parts with high surface finish, high form accuracy and surface integrity for the electronic and optical industries as well as for astronomical applications. This keynote paper introduces general aspects of ultra-precision grinding techniques and point out the essential features of ultra-precision grinding. In particular, the keynote paper reviews the state-of-the-art regarding applied grinding tools, ultra-precision machine tools and grinding processes. Finally, selected examples of advanced ultra-precision grinding processes are presented.

Abstract

The magnetic coupling between TbFeCo and FeCo in perpendicular MTJs with RE-TM alloy films was investigated. Two specimens that had different crystalline orientations of FeCo were prepared. The first was TbFeCo/FeCo(001)/Ta, and the second was TbFeCo/FeCo(110)/Ta, and their magnetic properties were observed. We confirmed that the squareness ratio of specimens with FeCo(001) was about 9% higher than that of specimens with FeCo(110). In addition, the lattice constants of FeCo(001) films were observed, and we confirmed that FeCo lattices needed to be stretched perpendicularly to obtain appropriate squareness in perpendicular magnetic properties.

Abstract

Differences between subgroups and correlations between reactive oxygen species (ROS), sperm motility, concentration of leukocytes and viability in semen samples from 143 men were investigated. Patients with azoospermia or leukocytospermia were excluded from the study. Spermatozoa were separated by means of glass wool filtration. Reactive oxygen species were determined by means of luminol chemiluminescence before and after sperm separation; thereafter, normozoospermic and oligozoospermic patients were divided into three subgroups using the mean of all patients investigated (17462 count 10(-7) viable spermatozoa) as cut-off value as follows: G1--high reactive oxygen species production in native semen and after glass wool filtration; G2--high production of reactive oxygen species only in native semen; G3--low levels of reactive oxygen species before and after glass wool filtration. In general, reactive oxygen species were significantly higher in oligozoospermic samples than in normozoospermic samples. In men with normal sperm count, ROS production correlated significantly with the number of leukocytes in the ejaculate before glass wool filtration, but not thereafter. Glass wool filtration is useful to distinguish between sperm samples in which reactive oxygen species are generated by leukocytes and those in which reactive oxygen species are excessively generated by the spermatozoa themselves.

24. Fabrication of MgO barrier for a magnetic tunnel junction in as-deposited state using amorphous RE–TM alloy

Abstract

MgO (1 0 0) textured films on Fe buffer layer with (1 0 0) preferential orientation were prepared by a reactive facing targets sputtering system at a substrate temperature of 100 °C during MgO deposition. This process can allow fabrication of MgO (1 0 0) tunneling barrier layer without high-temperature annealing process after the sputter-deposition. In addition, FeCo (1 0 0) preferred orientation films prepared on GdFeCo layers were improved with GdFeCo thickness. MgO films deposited on Fe (or FeCo) buffer layers revealed apparent (1 0 0) preferred orientation at the early stage of the film growth. 3 nm-thick MgO films deposited on GdFeCo [100 nm]/Fe [3 nm] exhibited (1 0 0) texture. Magnetic characteristic of perpendicular-magnetic tunnel junction (P-MTJ) element with the structure of GdFeCo [100 nm]/Fe [3 nm]/MgO [3 nm]/Fe [3 nm]/TbFeCo [100 nm] exhibited high squareness ratio of 0.8 and coercivity of free layer as low as 117 Oe by anomalous Hall effect, and (1 0 0) preferred orientation of 3 nm-thick MgO layer was observed by an X-ray diffractometer.

Abstract

Meteor and fireball observations are key to the derivation of both the inventory and physical characterization of small solar system bodies orbiting in the vicinity of the Earth. For several decades, observation of these phenomena has only been possible via ground-based instruments. The proposed JEM-EUSO mission has the potential to become the first operational space-based platform to share this capability. In comparison to the observation of extremely energetic cosmic ray events, which is the primary objective of JEM-EUSO, meteor phenomena are very slow, since their typical speeds are of the order of a few tens of km/sec (whereas cosmic rays travel at light speed). The observing strategy developed to detect meteors may also be applied to the detection of nuclearites, which have higher velocities, a wider range of possible trajectories, but move well below the speed of light and can therefore be considered as slow events for JEM-EUSO. Abstract

We are conducting tests of optical and electronics components of JEM-EUSO at the Telescope Array site in Utah with a ground-based "EUSO-TA" detector. The tests will include an engineering validation of the detector, cross-calibration of EUSO-TA with the TA fluorescence detector and observations of air shower events. Also, the proximity of the TA?s Electron Light Source will allow for convenient use of this calibration device. In this paper, we report initial results obtained with the EUSO-TA telescope. Abstract

Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very importantastrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highestenergies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of thelongitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples. Abstract

In this paper we describe the main characteristics of the JEM-EUSO instrument. The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) of the International Space Station (ISS) will observe Ultra High-Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) from space. It will detect UV-light of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) produced by UHECRs traversing the Earth?s atmosphere. For each event, the detector will determine the energy, arrival direction and the type of the primary particle. The advantage of a space-borne detector resides in the largefield of view, using a target volume of about 10 12 tons of atmosphere, far greater than what is achievable from ground. Another advantage is a nearly uniform sampling of the whole celestial sphere. The corresponding increase in statistics will help to clarify the origin and sources of UHECRs and characterize the environment traversed during their production and propagation. JEM-EUSO is a 1.1 ton refractor telescope using an optics of 2.5 m diameter Fresnel lenses to focus the UV-light from EAS on a focal surface composed of about 5000 multi-anode photomultipliers, for a total of 3x10^5 channels. A multi-layer parallel architecture handles front-end acquisition, selecting and storing valid triggers. Each processing level filters the events with increasingly complex algorithms using FPGAs and DSPs to reject spurious events and reduce thedata rate to a value compatible with downlink constraints. 30. Changes in Serum Biochemical Markers of Bone Cell Activity in Growing Thoroughbred Horses

Abstract

We studied the changes in biochemical markers of bone metabolism in growing Thoroughbred horses. Serum osteocalcin (OC), as a marker for bone formation, and carboxy-terminal propeptide of type-I collagen (PICP), as a marker for bone formation, carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type-I collagen (ICTP), as a marker for bone resorption, were determined in nine clinically healthy horses from 3 d to 17 mo of age. The BW and withers height (WH) increased during the study. On the other hand, a rapid reduction in body weight gain (BWG) was observed between 1 mo and 9 mo of age and a rapid reduction in withers height gain was observed between 1 mo and 5 mo of age. The serum markers decreased significantly with increasing age. In particular, dramatic changes in serum markers occurred between 3 d to 1 wk and 5 to 7 mo of age in these horses, which suggests that bone turnover rapidly decreased after birth. On the other hand, the ratio of PICP to ICTP decreased through the experiment. This result suggests that the reduction in bone formation exceeded that of bone resorption. There was a significant correlation between markers and growth parameters, except for the correlation between PICP and BWG on single linear regression analysis. Serum OC and ICTP were affected by the WH in multiple linear regression analysis. These results indicated that the age-related variation in serum biochemical markers of bone metabolism reflected bone growth, but neither BW nor BWG. Therefore, we consider that changes in bone modeling are the major factor affecting the levels of serum biochemical markers by 17 mo of age in horses.

Abstract

A search method using neural network algorithm and computer simulation was proposed to solve multi-variables problems such as injection molding process. In the injection molding of optical lenses, injection conditions have critical effects on the optical quality of molded lens. High-precision injection molding techniques are required for the fabrication of plastic optical lens. Therefore, the suggested technique in this study was constructed to search optimum conditions for improving surface profile of optical lenses through restraining porosity creation and minimizing thickness reduction. Simulation for injection molding was conducted focusing on the influence of various process parameters on defects such as porosity creation and thickness reduction. After the simulation, optimum injection molding conditions were predicted using a neural network program based on leaning data extracted from simulation results. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique, a series of injection molding experiments were carried out, and experimental results under selected injection conditions were compared with the results output predicted by the neural network.

Abstract

We proposed a method to improve signal–noise ratio of the Fresnel-type neutron lens. The Gd mask of concentric circle thin layer reduced 80% noise, at the best, due to the Fresnel-type lens shape. As the transmission for 1.1 nm neutrons decreased from 0.83 to 0.79 by using the Gd mask, the loss was 0.04.

Abstract

We have developed a Fresnel-type focusing device for cold neutrons fabricated using single crystals of magnesium fluoride. This stacked-lens device using 50 elements (with 50 beam–bending interfaces) demonstrated a focal length of 5 m with a good transmission of 0.829 for 1.14 nm neutrons. The focused beam was 5 times more intense than a beam of the same spot size with the same final flight path length produced with the traditional pinhole collimation. The background-scattering noise from lens was an order of magnitude larger than that of the traditional pinhole collimation in the momentum range of 0.01 – 0.05 nm −1 , almost 10 −3 of focused direct beam at the lowest momentum transfers measurable. This device produced an intensity gain in measured SANS data of more than 10 times when compared with the conventional pinhole geometry with the same minimum momentum transfer.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of electrolytic in-process dressing (ELID) grinding experiments performed on TiAlN film and characterization of the tribological characteristics of the produced films. In advanced films coated by physical vapor deposition, such as CrN and TiAlN, the low surface roughness required for attaining superior tribological characteristics is difficult to attain by use of only a coating process. ELID of grinding wheels improves wheel performance, enabling the attainment of specular finishes on brittle materials, with surface roughness on the nanometer scale (4 to 6 nm). In the present study, high-quality TiAlN film surfaces were fabricated by the ELID technique, typically achieving a surface roughness of around Ra 0.0024 μm by employment of a SD#30,000 wheel. Scanning electron microscopy reveals that ELID improved the finish, as indicated by the shape of grinding marks. Chemical element analysis by an energy-dispersed x-ray diffraction system suggests that ELID grinding formed an oxide layer in the machined surface of TiAlN film. Therefore, in addition to the highly smooth surface, an oxide layer formed by ELID grinding imparts superior tribological properties to ELID-ground TiAlN film.

Abstract

Sulfonylureas are the most commonly used oral hypoglycemic agents. Their hypoglycemic actions are produced not only by stimulating insulin secretion but also by extrapancreatic mechanisms. Some groups have already demonstrated the extrapancreatic actions of sulfonylureas on carbohydrate metabolism in the liver, fat and muscle. In this study, we showed in an in situ perfused hind limb preparation of STZ-diabetic rats that gliclazide has an acute effect on ketone body and glucose utilization.

Abstract

In order to verify the treatment performance of newly developed johkasous with membrane separation, for household use, three johkasous of different types were used for experimental study. It was found that each of these johkasous has a high treatment performance for removing BOD, nitrogen, and can be operated steadily by monitoring the function and maintaining the devices at every three months and by withdrawing accumulated sludge at every six months. It was also found that periodical cleaning of the membrane by sodium hypochlorite solution and neutralizing cleaning wastewater by sodium thiosulfate solution at every six months is important to maintain a steady permeability of the membranes. No adverse effects on treatment performance was observed by leached sodium hypochlorite solution from the membrane at membrane cleaning.
