1. OPACITY-BASED EDGE HIGHLIGHTING FOR TRANSPARENT VISUALIZATION OF 3D SCANNED POINT CLOUDS

Abstract: The recent development of 3D scanning technologies has made it possible to quickly and accurately record various 3D objects in the real world. The 3D scanned data take the form of large-scale point clouds, which describe complex 3D structures of the target objects and the surrounding scenes. The complexity becomes significant in cases that a scanned object has internal 3D structures, and the acquired point cloud is created by merging the scanning results of both the interior and surface shapes. To observe the whole 3D structure of such complex point-based objects, the point-based transparent visualization, which we recently proposed, is useful because we can observe the internal 3D structures as well as the surface shapes based on high-quality see-through 3D images. However, transparent visualization sometimes shows us too much information so that the generated images become confusing. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose to combine “edge highlighting” with transparent visualization. This combination makes the created see-through images quite understandable because we can highlight the 3D edges of visualized shapes as high-curvature areas. In addition, to make the combination more effective, we propose a new edge highlighting method applicable to 3D scanned point clouds. We call the method “opacity-based edge highlighting,” which appropriately utilizes the effect of transparency to make the 3D edge regions look clearer. The proposed method works well for both sharp (high-curvature) and soft (low-curvature) 3D edges. We show several experiments that demonstrate our method’s effectiveness by using real 3D scanned point clouds.

2. Experimental Investigation of the Continuous Transition of Flame-Spreading near the Blow-Off Limit

Abstract: This study investigates the continuous transition from flame-spreading to stabilized combustion near the blow-off limit in opposed forced flow by using expanding solid fuel duct that makes distribution of oxidizer velocity in the axial direction. The stabilized combustion is a diffusion flame that appears in the Axial-Injection End-Burning Hybrid Rocket. The boundary between flame-spreading and stabilized combustion has not been investigated in detail. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) rectangular ducts were used as a fuel, and gaseous oxygen was used as an oxidizer. All firing tests were conducted at atmospheric pressure. The diffusion flame traveled in the opposed-flow field where the oxidizer velocity increases continuously in the upstream direction. The combustion mode changed when oxidizer velocity at the flame tip exceeded a certain value. The oxidizer velocity used in this experiment ranges from 0.6 to 32.8 m/s. Experimental results show that a threshold oxidizer velocity of the transition can be determined. In this study, the threshold velocity was 26.4 m/s.

Abstract: Background: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD–Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. Methods and results: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012–2016). Abstract: The moisture resistance of 5 mol% Nd2BaCuO5-added Nd1+xBa2−xCu3Oy (x = 0–0.8) ceramics was investigated. The samples were prepared by a solid-state reaction at 980 °C and exposed to a humid atmosphere at 40 °C and 93 %RH. The microstructure observation and X-ray diffraction measurement of the exposed samples revealed that the surface morphology and the crystal structure tended to be more stable when the amount of x was increased. The crystal structure was orthorhombic for x = 0 and tetragonal for x = 0.2–0.8. By comparing the lattice constants calculated by the bond valence to those determined by X-ray diffraction, it was suggested that a gap around the Ba site increased with the increasing x. The gap around the substituted Nd3+ for Ba2+ was considered to act as a trap site for OH−.

Abstract: The recent development of 3D scanning technologies has made it possible to quickly and accurately record various 3D objects in the real world. The 3D scanned data take the form of large-scale point clouds, which describe complex 3D structures of the target objects and the surrounding scenes. The complexity becomes significant in cases that a scanned object has internal 3D structures, and the acquired point cloud is created by merging the scanning results of both the interior and surface shapes. To observe the whole 3D structure of such complex point-based objects, the point-based transparent visualization, which we recently proposed, is useful because we can observe the internal 3D structures as well as the surface shapes based on high-quality see-through 3D images. However, transparent visualization sometimes shows us too much information so that the generated images become confusing. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose to combine “edge highlighting” with transparent visualization. This combination makes the created see-through images quite understandable because we can highlight the 3D edges of visualized shapes as high-curvature areas. In addition, to make the combination more effective, we propose a new edge highlighting method applicable to 3D scanned point clouds. We call the method “opacity-based edge highlighting,” which appropriately utilizes the effect of transparency to make the 3D edge regions look clearer. The proposed method works well for both sharp (high-curvature) and soft (low-curvature) 3D edges. We show several experiments that demonstrate our method’s effectiveness by using real 3D scanned point clouds.

Abstract: We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. Abstract: To determine the association between sarcopenia and overactive bladder (OAB) in elderly diabetic patients using the Japanese version of SARC-F called SARC-F-J. Cross-sectional study. The study included 329 elderly diabetic patients (aged ≥65 years) who regularly visited the outpatient clinic at Community hospital in Japan. The condition of OAB was evaluated using the OAM symptom score, which involves a self-administered questionnaire, and sarcopenia was evaluated using the self-administered SARC-F-J questionnaire comprising five items. The odds ratio for OAB due to sarcopenia was calculated using multiple logistic regression analysis, with OAB as the dependent variable and sarcopenia as the explanatory variable. A total of 329 patients (186 males, 143 females) were included for analysis in the present study. Of these patients, 22.9% had sarcopenia and 18.7% had OAB. After adjusting the variables, the odds ratio for OAB due to sarcopenia was 4.46 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14–17.36, P = 0.031) and 2.09 (95% CI, 0.52–8.26, P = 0.293) for males and females, respectively. This study found that sarcopenia was significantly associated with OAB in elderly diabetic male patients based on SARC-F-J. Moreover, the possibility of the development of OAB should be considered during the medical examinations of elderly diabetic male patients with sarcopenia.

Abstract: Assessment of distal radioulnar joint instability is clinically difficult and subjective. The distal radioulnar joint is postulated to ‘tighten’ in ulnar/radial deviation and pronation/supination. Using a rig, we measured mean distal radioulnar joint translation in neutral forearm rotation and neutral wrist radial and ulnar deviation, as well as extremes of wrist radial and ulnar deviation and forearm rotation. We tested the rig on ten cadaver forearms to validate the measurements we made. We tested 50 normal adults and 50 patients with clinical distal radioulnar joint instability. Distal radioulnar joint stability in men and women and on contralateral sides were comparable. Distal radioulnar joint translation decreased significantly with wrist radial and ulnar deviation and forearm pronation and supination, matching clinical practice and further validating the rig. The data in normal patients is comparable with previous computed tomography-based studies. Translation in all positions was statistically increased within the clinical instability group and did not cross-over with the normal ranges. Distal radioulnar joint translation is a physically measurable phenomenon. Our device appears to be a valid test of distal radioulnar joint translation, establishing normal data in vivo. Abstract: Fast neutrons are a large background to measurements of gamma-rays emitted from excited nuclei, such that detectors which can efficiently distinguish between the two are essential. In this paper we describe the separation of gamma-rays from neutrons with the pulse shape information of the CsI(Tl) scintillator, using a fast neutron beam and several gamma-ray sources. We find that a figure of merit optimized for this separation takes on large and stable values (nearly 4) between 5 and 10 MeV of electron equivalent deposited energy, the region of most interest to the study of nuclear de-excitation gamma-rays. Accordingly this work demonstrates the ability of CsI(Tl) scintillators to reject neutron backgrounds to gamma-ray measurements at these energies., 10 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: Background: Both osteoporosis and sarcopenia are common in patients with chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Fragility fractures occur on osteoporotic bone on falling. Unstable gait caused by sarcopenia increases the frequency of such falls. Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) in patients with RA and healthy controls. Methods: We used data collected over a 7-year period from 2010 to 2016 as part of a prospective cohort study (TOMORROW Study: UMIN000003876) that included RA patients and age- and sex-matched volunteers recruited through mass media as controls. BMD of the lower leg and ASMI were determined using whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. These were collected for all participants together with baseline characteristics including anthropometric data and blood test data related to lipid and sugar metabolism. Each parameter for the RA patients was compared with that for the healthy controls. Multiple regression analysis was carried out in the RA population only. In RA patients, treatment regimen and disease activity score 28 were recorded. Results: Among 413 participants of the TOMORROW Study (208 RA patients; 349 women; mean age 58 years), 137 participants age 65 years or older (77 RA; 117 women) were enrolled in the present study. BMD and ASMI decreased significantly over the 7-year study period in RA patients and healthy controls from baseline. BMD and ASMI were lower in RA patients than in healthy controls at every time point through the 7-year study period. There was no interaction between time and RA (p=0.194, 0.089; repeated measure ANOVA). The change of BMD at year 7 from baseline (ΔBMD) and change of ASMI at year 7 from baseline (ΔASMI) did not correlate in health controls, however, in RA patients, ΔBMD correlated positively with ΔASMI (r=0.331, p=0.023) (Fig). Multiple regression analysis with ΔBMD as the outcome variable and anti-citrullinated peptide antibody, Rheumatoid factor, ASMI, body mass index, disease activity score 28, homeostatic model assessment (HOMA)-R, Matrix metalloprotease (MMP)-3 and sex as independent variables revealed that male sex (p=0.0036) and ASMI (p=0.0020) were independently related with ΔBMD. Abstract: A case of an isolated volar dislocation of the second and third carpometacarpal (CMC) joints in an 18-year-old man is described. He presented following a game of rugby unable to move his hand or wrist. He was managed by manipulation and K-Wire fixation. Hand function was excellent following wire removal and mobilization. This is an extremely rare injury, easily missed. The mechanism of injury described leads to comparison with the Lisfranc injury of the foot.

Abstract: We have searched for proton decays into a charged antilepton (e+, μ+) plus a meson (η, ρ0, ω) and for neutron decays into a charged antilepton (e+, μ+) plus a meson (π−, ρ−) using Super-Kamiokande I-IV data, corresponding to 0.316 megaton⋅years of exposure. This measurement updates the previous published result by using 2.26 times more data and improved analysis methods. No significant evidence for nucleon decay is observed and lower limits on the partial lifetime of the nucleon are obtained. The limits range from 3×1031 to 1×1034 years at 90% confidence level, depending on the decay mode.

Abstract: A search for boosted dark matter using 161.9 kt yr of Super-Kamiokande IV data is presented. We search for an excess of elastically scattered electrons above the atmospheric neutrino background, with a visible energy between 100 MeV and 1 TeV, pointing back to the Galactic center or the Sun. No such excess is observed. Limits on boosted dark matter event rates in multiple angular cones around the Galactic center and Sun are calculated. Limits are also calculated for a baseline model of boosted dark matter produced from cold dark matter annihilation or decay. This is the first experimental search for boosted dark matter from the Galactic center or the Sun interacting in a terrestrial detector.

Abstract: Using 5326 days of atmospheric neutrino data, a search for atmospheric tau neutrino appearance has been performed in the Super-Kamiokande experiment. Super-Kamiokande measures the tau normalization to be 1.47±0.32 under the assumption of normal neutrino hierarchy, relative to the expectation of unity with neutrino oscillation. The result excludes the hypothesis of no-tau appearance with a significance level of 4.6σ. The inclusive charged-current tau neutrino cross section averaged by the tau neutrino flux at Super-Kamiokande is measured to be (0.94±0.20)×10−38 cm2. The measurement is consistent with the Standard Model prediction, agreeing to within 1.5σ.

Abstract: Background Rikkunshito, a standardized Japanese herbal medicine, is thought to accelerate gastric emptying and relieve dyspepsia, although no large-scale, randomized, placebo-controlled trials of rikkunshito have been conducted. This study aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of rikkunshito for treating functional dyspepsia (FD). Methods FD patients received 2.5 g rikkunshito or placebo three times a day for 8 weeks in this multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial. The primary end point was the proportion of responders at 8 weeks after starting test drug, determined by global patient assessment (GPA). The improvement in four major dyspepsia symptoms severity scale was also evaluated. In addition, plasma ghrelin levels were investigated before and after treatment. Key Results Two hundred forty-seven patients were randomly assigned. In the eighth week, the rikkunshito group had more GPA responders (33.6%) than the placebo (23.8%), although this did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.09). Epigastric pain was significantly improved (p = 0.04) and postprandial fullness tended to improve (p = 0.06) in the rikkunshito group at week 8. Rikkunshito was relatively more effective among Helicobacter pylori-infected participants (rikkunshito: 40.0% vs placebo: 20.5%, p = 0.07), and seemed less effective among H. pylori-uninfected participants (rikkunshito: 29.3% vs placebo: 25.6%, p = 0.72). Among H. pylori-positive individuals, acyl ghrelin levels were improved just in rikkunshito group. There were no severe adverse events in both groups. Conclusions & Inferences Administration of rikkunshito for 8 weeks reduced dyspepsia, particularly symptoms of epigastric pain and postprandial fullness. Abstract: Novel pressure-free Cu nanoparticle joints for power electronic devices were fabricated, and their reliability was investigated. Si heater chips were bonded to Cu-65Mo baseplates without applied pressure in a N2 atmosphere. The increase in thermal resistance was found to be less than 30% after 1000 thermal cycles of −40/150 °C and −40/200 °C. Samples with Ag- or Cu-coated baseplates showed no deterioration following 3000 power cycles of 65/250 °C. In contrast, samples with baseplates coated with Au or Ni exhibited an increase in thermal resistance in power cycle tests of 65/200 °C and 65/250 °C.

Abstract: Distal radio-ulnar joint (DRUJ) instability is increasingly recognised and assessment can be subjective and difficult. Previous research has used cadaveric models or in-vivo with CT, with variable results. A test device was designed to establish normal values of in-vivo DRUJ dorso-palmar translation. Twenty volunteers were recruited. Those with previous wrist/forearm injuries were excluded. The device held the elbow at 90° flexion and neutral forearm rotation, with the distal ulna secured. A dorso-palmar shear force was applied to the distal radius and displacement measured three times on each wrist alternately by the same operator. The mean translation of the DRUJ is 5.5 mm. Same-sided mean measurements for two subjects taken days apart varied by 1 mm. The intra-class correlation coefficient was 0.93. The device is reliable, reproducible and appears to be a simple valid test. Contralateral sides were comparable. It will primarily be a research device to guide clinical practice in DRUJ instability.

We attempted to isolate gastric cancer (GC)-associated miRNAs comparing pre- and post-operative paired plasma, thereby excluding the possible effects of individual variability. Methods: This study was divided into four steps: (1) microarray analysis comparing pre- and post-operative plasma; (2) validation of candidate miRNAs by quantitative RT–PCR; (3) validation study of selected miRNAs using paired plasma; and (4) comparison of the levels of selected miRNAs in plasma between healthy controls and patients. Results: From the results of microarray analysis, nine candidate miRNAs the levels of which were markedly decreased in post-operative plasma were selected for further studies. After confirmation of their post-operative marked reduction, two candidate miRNAs, miR-451 and miR-486, were selected as plasma biomarkers, considering the abundance in plasma, and marked decrease in post-operative samples. RESULTS: (1) The expression of miR-18a was significantly higher in pancreatic cancer tissues (P ¼0.012) and pancreatic cancer cell lines (P ¼0.015) than in normal tissues and fibroblasts. (2) Plasma concentrations of miR-18a were significantly higher in pancreatic cancer patients than in controls (Po0.0001). The value of the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.9369. (3) Plasma levels of miR-18a were significantly lower in postoperative samples than in preoperative samples (P ¼0.0077). CONCLUSION: Circulating miR-18a might provide new complementary tumour markers for pancreatic cancer.

We hypothesised that plasma miRNAs concentrations contributed to potential biomarkers in patients with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods: We selected three oncogenic miRNAs (miR-21, miR-184, miR-221) and one tumour suppressive miRNA (miR-375), which are frequently reported in squamous cell carcinoma, as candidate targets for this plasma miRNA assay. This study was divided into three steps: (1) Determination of appropriate plasma miRNAs in preliminary tests. (2) Evaluation of whether the plasma miRNA assays could monitor tumour dynamics. (3) Validation study on the clinical application of plasma miRNA assays in 50 ESCC patients and 20 healthy volunteers. Results: (1) In preliminary tests, the plasma level of miR-21 was significantly higher (P=0.0218) and that of miR-375 (P=0.0052) was significantly lower in ESCC patients than controls. Abstract: This study investigated the electrode life and the electrode degradation characteristics during continuous resistance spot welding of aluminium alloy sheets. When a long welding time and dome radius type electrode were used, the electrode life was extended more than that when a short welding time and radius type electrode are used. The electrode tip is considered to degrade by the following mechanism: an Al–Cu alloy layer is formed at the electrode tip during continuous welding, and then it peels off from the electrode tip transferring to the surface of aluminium alloy sheet. Its peeling makes the electrode tip indented and finally the electrode tip flattens with increasing diameter of electrode tip. In order to eliminate the direct contact between electrode and worksheet, a special Cu foil insert device for resistance spot welding of aluminium alloy sheets was developed and an extremely long electrode life was achieved.

Abstract: Due to excellent magnetic properties of the Nd-Fe-B magnet, endless effort has been paid to the exploration of these high performance permanent magnetic materials since its discovery [1,2]. Tremendous technological applications have been found in the field of motors for hard disk drives, wind mill power generator and hybrid or electric vehicles (HEV or EV). Though experimental maximum energy product [(BH)max] has been close to the theoretical value now, there is still a significant gap between the highest coercivity reported and the calculated value. The addition of heavy rare earth elements (Dy or Tb) has been widely used to enhance the coercivity of the sintered Nd-Fe-B magnet in both laboratories and industrial mass production since the anisotropy field of Dy 2 Fe 14 B or Tb 2 Fe 14 B compounds is much higher than that of Nd 2 Fe 14 B [3]. However, researchers around the world are trying continuously to explore other approaches to increase the coercivity considering the low natural abundance of these additive elements. It should also be noted that the excess heavy rare earth elements will lead to an inevitable loss of the remanence and (BH)max [4]. Grain boundary diffusion (GBD) treatment may increase the coercivity effectively with only limited heavy rare earth elements distributed near the grain boundary [5,6].

Abstract: 18-Crown-6 tetracarboxylic acid (18C6H4) has been successfully used as a chiral selector for capillary electrophoretic (CE), high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC), and gas chromatographic (GC) separation of the enantiomers of DL-amino compounds. We have previously used X-ray crystallographic analysis and HPLC with an immobilized 18C6H4 chiral stationary phase to study chiral recognition by 18C6H4 of several DL amino acids (DL-AA). In this study CE was used for chiral recognition of several DL-AA in electrolyte solution containing 18C6H4, in which the analyte (D or L amino acid) interacts freely. Among 14 DL-AA investigated, the enantiomers of nine (Glu, Ile, Met, PheG, Phe, Ser, Tyr, Val, and Thr) were successfully recognized in 4-15 mM 18C6H4. Indirect photometric detection with a cationic dye, chrysoidine, was used to monitor non-chromophoric DL-AA. Among nine successfully recognized DL-AA, the D forms of Ser, Thr and Met migrated faster than the corresponding L forms. The strengths of interactions predicted from the order of migration of each enantiomer in CE were different from those in HPLC analysis. The different enantiomer recognition probably can be ascribed to the difference between CE in which the selector is not immobilized and HPLC in which the selector is immobilized by means of a spacer.

The transport stream processor generates the low clock rate partial transport streams by utilizing the bit rate control algorithm with the recording information table and the modulo algorithm. This system realizes a high-speed signal processing of multiple HDTV transport streams for HDD recording and playback for the storage digital broadcasting.

Aims To compare the breeding ecology of two Japanese populations, and with breeding data from Polish sites. Methods We studied two sites in 1996. The Seimei site comprises a natural reed-bed (Phragmites australis) (2.0 ha) c. 2 km from residential areas. The Sakura site occurs as smaller reed-bed (0.8 ha) close to residential areas. Field study comprised mainly nest searching and nest monitoring. Results Breeding density, nest height, number of stems supporting nest, clutch size and brood size were not significantly different between sites. The proportion of nests built on reed stems standing in the water (60%) was significantly higher at the Seimei site (P < 0.001), and the warblers in this habitat experienced significantly higher nesting failure (P < 0.05). Abstract: The three-dimensional XY model with bilinear-biquadratic exchange interactions $J$ and $J'$, respectively, has been studied by Monte Carlo simulations. From the detailed analysis of the thermal variation of various physical quantities, as well as the order parameter and energy histogram analysis, the phase diagram including two different ordered phases has been determined. There is a single phase boundary from a paramagnetic to a dipole-quadrupole ordered phase, which is of second order in a high $J/J'$ ratio region, changing to a first-order one for $0.35 \leq J/J' \leq 0.5$. Below $J/J'=0.35$ there are two separate transitions: the first one to the quadrupole long-range order (QLRO) phase at higher temperatures, followed by another one to the dipole-quadrupole long-range order (DLRO) phase at lower temperatures. The finite-size scaling analysis yields values of the critical exponents for both the DLRO and QLRO transitions close to the values for the conventional XY model which includes no biquadratic exchange., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: For the purpose of a mechanical evaluation of a metal-cladding polarizer, a precise characterization of SiO/sub 2-x/-Al thin-film succession fabricated on a LiNbO/sub 3/ substrate was made as well as an experimental optimization of the SiO/sub 2-x/-Al polarizer for the Ti:LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide. A 10-nm-thick SiO/sub 2-x/ was selected as the optimized underlay of a SiO/sub 2-x/-Al polarizer for the Ti:LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide using a wavelength of /spl lambda/=1.55 /spl mu/m. Results of scratch testing show that the adhesive strength of SiO/sub 2-x/-Al films was almost the same level as that of Ti-Au films on a thick SiO/sub 2/ layer, commonly used for metallic underlay of Au-plated electrodes. From observing SiO/sub 2-x/-Al film using a transmission electron microscope, it was confirmed that the 10-nm-thick SiO/sub 2-x/ underlay stratified well without serious thickness fluctuation.

Abstract: The gelation mechanism was investigated using in situ ultrasonic measurements. It was found that the gelation takes place by different mechanisms, depending upon quenching temperature. When iPS/ trans -decalin solution was allowed to quench above the coexistence curve, the gelation was caused by crystallization. On the other hand, when it was allowed to quench below the coexistence curve, the gelation was caused mainly by liquid–liquid phase separation. Therefore, the junction point structure may be crystallite for the former gels, while for the latter ones, it may be a solvated structure. This conclusion was also supported by other measurements such as IR and NMR spectra, as well as by visual and tactual observations.

Abstract: Background Mast cells frequently accumulate at the site of fibrosis and their contribution has been suspected in the pathogenesis of fibrotic conditions. However, it still remains unknown whether human mast cells synthesize transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1). Objective We have investigated whether cord blood-derived human cultured mast cells express messenger RNA (mRNA) for TGF-β and produce bioactive TGF-β1. Methods Mast cells were obtained by culturing mononuclear cells from cord blood in the presence of stem cell factor and interleukin-6. Expression of mRNA for TGF-β1 was examined by the method of reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Immunocytochemical staining for TGF-β and growth-inhibitory assay using Mv1Lu cells were also performed. Results The cultured human mast cells constitutively expressed mRNA for TGF-β1. With calcium ionophore A23187, the intensity of the PCR-amplified band for TGF-β1 was not increased. Immunocytochemical staining showed that the cultured mast cells were positive for both latency-associated peptide and activated forms of TGF-β. Bioassay with Mv1Lu cells and R 4-2 mutant cells showed that mast-cell conditioned medium had a bioactivity of TGF-β1. Conclusion Cord blood-derived human cultured mast cells constitutively express mRNA for TGF-β1 and produce functional TGF-β1. Because TGF-β1 has been shown to be highly fibrogenic, these results may highlight a novel role for human mast cells in tissue fibrosis.

Abstract: 今回虫垂にポリープおよび憩室を合併したPeutz-Jegehrs症候群 (P-JS) の1例を経験したので報告する・症例は28歳の女性.主訴は下腹部痛で, 口唇および四肢に色素斑を認め, 下腹部に弾性硬, 可動性のある腫瘤を触知した.腹部超音波検査などで腸重積症および汎発性腹膜炎と診断し緊急手術を施行したところ, 重積した小腸が壊死に陥っていたため約130cmの長さの小腸切除術を施行した.術中切除小腸を観察したところ先端部に分葉状に有茎性のポリープを認めたためP-JSを疑い, さらに検索したところ嚢状に腫大し内腔に腫瘤を触知する虫垂を認めたため虫垂切除術を併施した.虫垂の内腔はムチン様物質が充満し粘液嚢腫を呈しており, 中央部に直径約20mmと15mmのポリープを1個ずつ認めた.病理組織学的には過誤腫であった.また虫垂先端部に仮性憩室を認め, 虫垂ポリープが原因であると推測された.

Abstract: Mechanochemically polished surfaces of d.c. poled LiNbO3 crystals are observed by electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) which is performed by applying a d.c. voltage to the tip. EFM is confirmed to be suitable for a non-destructive inspection of submicron size 180° domains (+ domains) in −z plane. It is revealed by EFM that the −z plane has a positive charge and the + domains are charged negative in the air. A possibility is proposed that the Li2O deficiency is an origin of the + domains.

Abstract: Summary Background The nasal mucosa is the initial site in the upper airway of host defence against antigenic challenge in the form of airborne allergens, irritants, toxins and infectious agents, and yet little is known about nasal mucosal cytokine expression and function. We hypothesized that IL-2 might play a role in immunocompetence of the upper airway. Methods IL-2 immunoreactivity was measured by ELISA in nasal secretions and by Western blot. Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy were performed on turbinated tissue. mRNA for IL-2 was evaluated by RTPCR and Southern hybridization. Results IL-2 immunoreactivity was demonstrated by Western blot and quantitated by an enzyme immunoassay. Immunohistochemical and electron microscopy analysis of turbinate tissue revealed interstitial staining for IL-2. By RTPCR, IL-2 message was evident in 5/5 atopies and 5/5 non-atopics. IL-2 message was expressed in all subjects by Southern hybridization to an internal probe after PCR. Conclusion This study has demonstrated constitutive expression of IL-2 protein and mRNA in the upper airway of heallhy individuals. The further characterization of cytokines in the upper airway could provide useful insights into immune regulation at the mucosal level.

Abstract: Growth of a bias point thermal shift induced by dc bias in z-cut LiNbO/sub 3/ optical intensity modulators is quantitatively discussed from the standpoint of its impact on field service. During 20 years of device operation under a worst-case dc bias condition, the thermal shift slope grows almost symmetrically with respect to a bias polarity. An initial small thermal shift of around /spl plusmn/7 mV//spl deg/C (3/spl sigma/ distribution bounds) increases continuously over time with biased operation at 55/spl deg/C and approaches /spl plusmn/70 mV//spl deg/C after 20 years. This increased temperature sensitivity would generate approximately a 2-V bias point shift toward the bias rail when modulator is exposed to temperature variation from 55/spl deg/C to 25/spl deg/C.

Abstract: Background: Several studies have demonstrated that YWHAZ (14-3-3ζ), included in the 14-3-3 family of proteins, has been implicated in the initiation and progression of cancers. We tested whether YWHAZ acted as a cancer-promoting gene through its activation/overexpression in gastric cancer (GC). Methods: We analysed 7 GC cell lines and 141 primary tumours, which were curatively resected in our hospital between 2001 and 2003. Results: Overexpression of the YWHAZ protein was frequently detected in GC cell lines (six out of seven lines, 85.7%) and primary tumour samples of GC (72 out of 141 cases, 51%), and significantly correlated with larger tumour size, venous and lymphatic invasion, deeper tumour depth, and higher pathological stage and recurrence rate. Patients with YWHAZ-overexpressing tumours had worse overall survival rates than those with non-expressing tumours in both intensity and proportion expression-dependent manner. YWHAZ positivity was independently associated with a worse outcome in multivariate analysis (P=0.0491, hazard ratio 2.3 (1.003–5.304)). Knockdown of YWHAZ expression using several specific siRNAs inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion of YWHAZ-overexpressing GC cells. Higher expression of the YWHAZ protein was significantly associated with the lower expression of miR-375 in primary GC tissues (P=0.0047). Conclusion: These findings suggest that YWHAZ has a pivotal role in tumour cell proliferation through its overexpression, and highlight its usefulness as a prognostic factor and potential therapeutic target in GC.

We tested miR-221 and miR-375, which are frequently reported to be highly and poorly expressed in pancreatic cancer (PCa), as candidates for plasma biomarkers in PCa. Abstract: Palladium acetate was sublimed at reduced pressure at 400°C and was evacuated through the porous wall of an α-alumina support tube. A thin palladium membrane was thus formed in the macropores due to chemical vapor deposition. The palladium membrane showed a hydrogen permeance of 10 -6 mol/m 2 .s.Pa and a hydrogen/nitrogen permselectivity higher than 1000. Further, gallium-silicate catalyst (Si/Ga = 40) was synthesized via an alkoxide method, and the membrane was coaxially fixed in a tubular reactor in which the catalyst particles were packed. Aromatization of propane was performed at 500-600°C, and the hydrogen evolved was continuously removed from the system. Propane conversion and aromatics selectivity were increased by decreasing hydrogen partial pressure by the installation of the membrane.

The two dominant failure modes for these devices are: 1) device performance degradation due to temperature-activated drift of the annealed proton-exchange waveguide; and 2) optical insertion loss increase due to humidity-induced deterioration of glued fiber joints. A growth of the thermal shift depends upon the amplitude, polarity, and duration of the applied voltage and constitutes a new criterion to reliability modeling of LN modulators.
