The spraying of insecticide on foliage to provide an insecticidal barrier may serve as part of the vector control measures to combat the increasing threat of Aedes-borne diseases. The effectiveness of insecticide barrier spraying was evaluated by assessing the residual efficacy of deltamethrin sprayed on foliage against Malaysian Ae. aegypti (L.) and Ae. albopictus (Skuse). In this semi-field study, landscape plants grown within the vicinity of the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Malaysia, were treated with deltamethrin suspension concentrate (SC) with the dosage of 30 mg/m2 and 50 mg/m2 in three rounds of spraying. Deltamethrin residual activity on treated and untreated leaves was investigated using standard WHO cone bioassays. Wild Aedes populations at both deltamethrin-treated and untreated plant clusters were monitored by ovitrap surveillance. Ovitrap monitoring revealed that the mean number of Ae. albopictus larvae at deltamethrin-treated were significantly lower than the mean number of larvae of the same species at the untreated plant cluster. Cone bioassay results showed that the insecticide remained effective for up to 4 weeks (> 80% mortality), but the insecticide residual activity was affected by rainfall. These results suggest that insecticide barrier spraying is a promising tool and may be used along with other mosquito control tools such as indoor residual spray and space spraying to reduce the dengue burden.

Diseases such as malaria, dengue, Zika and chikungunya remain endemic in many countries. Setting and deploying traps to capture the host/vector species are fundamental to understand their density and distributions. Human effort to manage the trap data accurately and timely is an exhaustive endeavour when the study area expands and period prolongs. One stop mobile app to manage and monitor the process of targeted species trapping, from field to laboratory level is still scarce. Toward this end, we developed a new mobile app named "PesTrapp" to acquire the vector density index based on the mobile updates of ovitraps and species information in field and laboratory. This study aimed to highlight the mobile app's development and design, elucidate the practical user experiences of using the app and evaluate the preliminary user assessment of the mobile app. The mobile app was developed using mobile framework and database. User evaluation of the mobile app was based on the adjusted Mobile App Rating Scale and Standardized User Experience Percentile Rank Questionnaire. The process flows of system design and detailed screen layouts were described. The user experiences with and without the app in a project to study Aedes surveillance in six study sites in Selangor, Malaysia were elucidated. The overall mean user evaluation score of the mobile app was 4.0 out of 5 (SD=0.6), reflects its acceptability of the users. The PesTrapp, a one-stop solution, is anticipated to improve the entomological surveillance work processes. This new mobile app can contribute as a tool in the vector control countermeasure strategies.

The Medical Entomology Unit of the Institute for Medical Research, Kuala Lumpur, is a laboratory that was certified in 2019 to conduct evaluation of vector control products in compliance to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development principles of good laboratory practice (GLP) laboratory. To ensure the product evaluation practice complies with the GLP principles and corrections are made for improving test procedures, internal inspections by the Quality Assurance team play a crucial role. Before commencing GLP-compliant studies, study plans are developed according to the study objectives and critically examined to ensure they are performed in accordance with the GLP principles. We described the quality of test system, test item and test method used for evaluation of repellent effect of topically applied repellent products in accordance to the GLP test requirements.

Recent meta-analyses of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors in alopecia areata (AA) have excluded trial registries and may thus be subject to publication bias. This study assessed the potential for evidence selection bias and provides an overview of JAK inhibitor trials in AA. A broad search strategy of ClinicalTrials.gov was performed for AA. We also recorded whether results were published on PubMed. There were 26 trials identified, of which 9 were ongoing (mostly oral JAK inhibitors: 8 studies; 89%). Of completed/terminated trials, 4/17 (24%) had terminated prematurely, citing 'inefficacy/futility' or 'sponsor decision'. These were all topical JAK inhibitor trials (4/8, 50% termination rate), with a 0% termination rate (0/9) for oral JAK inhibitor trials. We conclude that topical JAK inhibitors may be less efficacious than has been apparent in the literature to date, with 50% of trials having terminated due to inefficacy/futility or sponsor decision and only one topical JAK inhibitor trial ongoing.

Optical interconnect technology has been adopted for over half a century. Today approximately one billion optical connectors and interconnects are deployed annually, and the growth is expected to increase as more technologies incorporate optical and photonic components. Although its basic function (the conveyance of photons over a channel) has remained the same, optical interconnect has been constantly evolving and innovating over the decades to push the boundaries of performance. In this paper we report on the evolution of optical interconnect technology from its initial applications in long haul telecommunications links to its future application to quantum networks.

Medical writers may make major contributions to the preparation of a manuscript, but are not listed as authors. We assessed the prevalence, affiliation and role of medical writers in dermatology randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in 2019 in the top 7 medical and top 10 dermatology journals. Medical writers were identified in 39/83 trials (47%), all of which were exclusively industry-funded trials (39/47, prevalence 83%). Most studies stated their role as 'medical writing support' and/or 'editorial assistance' (35/39, 90%), but when more information was provided, four studies specified first draft preparation (50% of RCTs in general medical and 1.3% of RCTs in dermatology journals). Medical writers are common in dermatology trials but their role is often vaguely stated. In April 2020 the British Journal or Dermatology and Clinical and Experimental Dermatology adopted CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy), which describes contributions of authors and may help clarify who writes trial manuscripts.

Background In Malaysia, dengue remains a top priority disease and usage of insecticides is the main method for dengue vector control. Limited baseline insecticide resistance data in dengue hotspots has prompted us to conduct this study. The present study reports the use of a map on the insecticide susceptibility status of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus to provide a quick visualization and overview of the distribution of insecticide resistance. Method and results The insecticide resistance status of Aedes populations collected from 24 dengue hotspot areas from the period of December 2018 until June 2019 was proactively monitored using the World Health Organization standard protocol for adult and larval susceptibility testing was conducted, together with elucidation of the mechanisms involved in observed resistance. For resistance monitoring, susceptibility to three adulticides (permethrin, deltamethrin, and malathion) was tested, as well as susceptibility to the larvicide, temephos. Data showed significant resistance to both deltamethrin and permethrin (pyrethroid insecticides), and to malathion (organophosphate insecticide) in all sampled Aedes aegypti populations, while variable resistance patterns were found in the sampled Aedes albopictus populations. Temephos resistance was observed when larvae were tested using the diagnostic dosage of 0.012mg/L but not at the operational dosage of 1mg/L for both species. Conclusion The present study highlights evidence of a potential threat to the effectiveness of insecticides currently used in dengue vector control, and the urgent requirement for insecticide resistance management to be integrated into the National Dengue Control Program., Author summary Insecticide resistance may threaten the efficacy of insecticides currently used in the dengue vector control program. These current findings reveal widespread insecticide resistance in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus sampled from dengue hotspots. This screening provides comprehensive data on insecticide resistance to insecticides commonly used in dengue vector control programs. The mapping approach utilized in this present study facilitates easy visualization of the resistance distribution in dengue vectors across many dengue hotspots. Therefore, it could hence be beneficial to the Ministry of Health in managing the threat of resistance before it compromises current dengue vector control strategies.

The continued absence of an effective and safe tetravalent dengue vaccine and the lack of specific anti-viral treatment have made mosquito vector control using chemical insecticides as the mainstream for dengue prevention and control. However, the long-term use of chemical insecticides may induce resistance. Hence detection of insecticide resistance in dengue vectors is crucially important in ensuring the insecticide-based intervention in dengue control program is still effective and reliable. In this study, the susceptibility status of Aedes aegypti from five selected dengue hotspots in Klang Valley, Malaysia against pyrethroids was determined by employing the World Health Organization (WHO) protocol of adult bioassay. Four types of pyrethroids were tested against adult female Aedes aegypti to determine the knockdown rate, post 24-h adult mortality and resistance ratio. All field-collected Aedes aegypti strains were resistant to the four pyrethroids tested, except for the Taman Sungai Jelok (TSJ) strain. Permethrin exhibited the lowest knockdown rate against Aedes aegypti, followed by deltamethrin, cyfluthrin and lambda-cyhalothrin. This present study indicated the widespread of pyrethroid resistance in Aedes aegypti in Klang Valley, indicating the needs of implementing alternative measures in vector control program. The data in this study can be utilised as an input for insecticide resistance management of Aedes aegypti in Malaysia.

In the practice of forensic entomology, the chronological age of the maggots retrieved from the cadaver is used to determine the minimum post-mortem interval (mPMI) i.e. minimum time of death. The conventional method of aging the maggots is based on measuring the growth rate of these maggots. Although effective, the constraint associated with conventional method necessitates the development of new age determination method, such as pteridine determination. Pteridine, a by-product of protein metabolism in insects is known to correlate with the age of a variety of dipterans. A number of studies were conducted on aging the adults of forensically important flies. In this study, pteridine was extracted from Chrysomya megacephala and Chrysomya rufifacies maggots of known age using established methods and determined by measuring the fluorescence at excitation of 330nm and the emissions between 350nm and 600nm. Results exhibited significant positive linear relationships between the pteridine accumulations and age of the fly immature. Pteridine determination is a potential new age determination tool that can be used to determine mPMI.

Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre (TIDREC), University of Malaya, 50603 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia This study reports the distribution and abundance of Aedes by using ovitrap surveillance and aims to provide the most recent information on dengue vector distribution in Sarawak State, Malaysia. The ovitrap index (OI) of Aedes larvae was found highest in urban residential area (mean OI = 90.97%), followed by suburban (69.70%), rural (65.45%) and remote (52.63%) residential areas. The mean number of Aedes larvae per ovitrap was also found to be significantly highest in urban residential area (26.47 ± 1.62) compared to other type of residential areas (p0.05). Interestingly, no Aedes aegypti was observed in this study, but two species of Armigeres were found co-breeding with Ae. albopictus. This study reveals that Ae. albopictus is the dominant dengue vector in Sarawak State and all the surveyed residential areas are in risk of dengue transmission with OI10.

Thermal application of a synergized pyrethroid formulation containing 0.8% w/w sbioallethrin, 18.7% w/w permethrin and 16.8% w/w piperonyl butoxide was performed to evaluate its efficacy against adult and larva of Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. Three cages each containing 15 mosquitoes and paper cups each containing 25 larvae in 250 ml of water were deployed at each test point between 3 and 20 feet. The formulation was diluted (formulation:water) 1:33, 1:50 and 1:100, respectively, and applied using a thermal fogger. Sixty minutes post spraying, the adult knock down rate of Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus at a maximum distance of 15 feet using all dilution ratios ranged from 96.67 - 100% and 43.33 - 100%, respectively. More than 70.00% adult mortalities were recorded for both mosquito species at the distance between 3 feet and 15 feet 24 hours post spraying. In contrast, complete larval mortalities of Ae. aegypti were obtained at a maximum distance of 10 feet with dilution ratio of 1:33, while more than 80.00% larval mortalities were observed for Cx. quinquefasciatus at similar maximum distance using all dilution ratios. These results showed that thermal application using synergized pyrethroid formulation was effective against both mosquito species tested especially the adult stage.

Human-landing catch (HLC) technique was undertaken in nine selected study sites within Peninsular Malaysia to determine the biting cycle of Aedes, Armigeres, Culex, and Mansonia mosquitoes. HLC was conducted 24 hours on three different nights in a duration of one week at each study site. Aedes albopictus were found in all study sites with bimodal biting cycle, whereas the biting peak of Aedes butleri was recorded between 1600 and 1900 hr. For Armigeres, five study sites demonstrated similar biting peak hour (1900 - 2000 hr) for Ar. kesseli four study sites showed biting peak at 1800 - 1900 hr for Ar. subalbatus. Culex quinquefasciatus was collected from all study sites except in Sungai Penchala with its biting activity beginning from 1900 hr. Both Mansonia annulifera and Mansonia uniformis captured in two different study sites showed similar biting peaks (1500 - 1600 hr). It is recommended that vector control activities be carried out at dusk as almost all mosquito species captured started their biting activities at that time.

Laboratory colonised mosquitoes are usually maintained on vitamin B complex fortified sucrose solution, however only few studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of such practice. This study aimed to determine the effects of different concentrations of sucrose solution fortified with and without 1% vitamin B complex on the longevity and reproductive potential of adult female of a local strain of Culex quinquefasciatus Say. Two arms of studies were carried out separately and each arm was triplicated. In one arm, concentrations of sucrose solution at 0%, 1%, 3%, 5% and 10% fortified with 1% Vitamin B complex were fed to the mosquitoes, while in the other arm, similar sucrose concentrations were used but without 1% vitamin B complex. Adult Cx. quinquefasciatus maintained on 5% sucrose solution fortified with 1% vitamin B complex exhibited significant extended vitality and longevity in stimulating ovarian development, compared with other vitamin fortified sucrose concentrations (p0.05). The vitality and longevity of F0 and F1 males were 76.67±2.19 days and 57.67±8.19 days respectively. The F0 females survived the longest duration of 107.67±5.61 days and the F1 females survived 90.67±12.47 days with higher number of eggs laid, i.e. 1427.67±62.89 eggs at a higher hatchability rate of 57.05±8.39% or 814.49 eggs hatched. Thus, 5% sucrose solution fortified with 1% Vitamin B complex should be used to produce colonies of homogenous mosquitoes as this exerts positive biological effects on laboratory-bred Cx. quinquefasciatus.

The increase of the burden of dengue and chikungunya and the relative failure of traditional vector control strategies have highlighted the need to develop new control methods. RIDL-SIT, a vector control method based on the release of engineered male mosquitoes, has shown promising results from field trials conducted in the Cayman Islands and Brazil. In large scale use, a small proportion of females might be released along with the males. Such females are potential virus vectors; here we investigate the vertical transmission of dengue and chikungunya of homozygous OX513A females.We provided females of OX513A-My1 and a wild type comparator strain with blood meals artificially infected with dengue serotype 1, 2, 3, 4 or chikungunya viruses. For 14 days post-feeding, eggs laid by females were collected. Larvae and their mothers were first tested by qRT-PCR, then by inoculation on cell cultures to search for infectious viral particles. We found no significant difference between the minimum infection rate of OX513A-My1 and wild type females. We also discussed the potential number of females being released, a fraction of the female wild population. Consequently, we conclude that there are no evidence that OX513A-My females, if released into the environment, would cause more harm than their wild counterparts.

An indoor ozone-producing air purifier was evaluated for its repellency effects on Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, Culex quinquefasciatus, Musca domestica and Periplaneta americana adults using a modified tunnel cage. The first set of testing consisted of both bait and the air purifier, whereas only bait was offered in the second testing set. The highest percent repellency was recorded among Cx. quinquefasciatus (83.23%) while Ae. aegypti (68.56%) was the least repelled by the air purifier tested. No mortality was observed in all testings. These results illustrated the potential use of the ozone-producing air purifier as a personal protection insect repellent device in premises. Nevertheless, in order to prevent dengue infection which is transmitted by both Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, ozone-producing air purifier should be utilized concurrently with other vector control methods.

The residual activities of 5 insect growth regulators (IGRs) were studied and compared to operational dosage of temephos (1 mg/L) and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) (0.008 mg/L). The IGRs, temephos and Bti were applied into plastic containers containing 5 litres of water. Thirty Aedes aegypti larvae were added into each container weekly. Efficacy of these IGRs were evaluated for effective duration of each dosage and the percentage of emergence inhibition (EI). An end-point of EI/mortality ≥ 50% was considered to be effective. Pyriproxyfen possessed the longest residual activity in both indoor (43 weeks) and outdoor (26 weeks) conditions, followed by temephos (26 weeks in indoor and 16 weeks in outdoor). Although the residual activity of Bti in indoor lasted 8 weeks which was longer than cyromazine and diflubenzuron; however, it was least effective in outdoor which only lasted 2 weeks. This study revealed that pyriproxyfen possessed good residual effect among test IGRs compared to temephos and Bti. The use of IGRs can be an alternative long-term control measure in stagnant water body.

SUMMARYIn spinal cord injury (SCI), the scar-forming reactive astrocytes with upregulated GFAP proliferate aberrantly near the injury site, allowing themselves as a prime target for transdifferentiation into neurons to replenish dead neurons. However, the conventional use of GFAP promoter to target reactive astrocytes has two inherent problems: inadvertent conversion of normal astrocytes and low efficiency due to progressive weakening of promoter activity during transdifferentiation. Here, we report that the scar-forming reactive astrocytes are selectively transdifferentiated into neurons with 87% efficiency and 96% specificity via TRANsCre-DIONE, a combination of the split-Cre system under two different promoters of GFAP and Lcn2 and a Cre-loxP-dependent inversion and expression of Neurog2 under the strong EF1α promoter. After SCI, TRANsCre-DIONE caused transdifferentiation into Isl1-positive motor neurons, reduced astrogliosis, enhanced regeneration in surrounding cells, and a significant motor recovery. In this paper, we use the classical Ross–Macdonald model to analyze the effect of the Mosquito Home System (MHS), which is an example of an auto-dissemination trap, in controlling the spread of dengue in Malaysia in a high-rise condominium environment. By using the national dengue data from Malaysia, we are able to estimate [Formula: see text] which represents the initial growth rate of the dengue epidemic and thus allows us to estimate the number of mosquitoes in Malaysia. The basic reproduction number [Formula: see text] is also obtained. We have constructed a mathematical expression which allows us to estimate the potential number of breeding sites for Aedes mosquitoes. Later on, by using the data available from the 11 months trials carried out in three blocks of flats in Selangor, we improved on our dengue model by including the effect of the MHS and thus modeling the impact it has on the spread of dengue within the flats. Numerical simulations and tables are also produced to illustrate our results.

In recent decades, dengue incidence has trended upward worldwide causing urgent needs for new or modified vector control methods. We modified the existing indoor residual spraying (IRS) method by applying insecticide on the outer walls of building structures in an outdoor residual spraying (ORS) study. A semi-field study was conducted to investigate the bio-efficacy of two different deltamethrin formulations: K-Othrine® Polyzone, new polymer-enhanced deltamethrin formulated as a suspension concentrate (SC-PE), and K-Othrine® WG 250, traditional deltamethrin formulated as water dispersible granule (WG). The residual bio-efficacy of deltamethrin SC-PE was compared to deltamethrin WG on finished cement surfaces applied to the outer walls at the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Malaysia. Standard WHO cone wall bioassays were adapted to evaluate the effective duration of action of these deltamethrin formulations against susceptible laboratory-reared and wild, free-flying Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus. Analyses of bioassay results showed that deltamethrin SC-PE 30 mg/m2 has improved longevity in comparison to deltamethrin WG 30 mg/m2. Deltamethrin SC-PE 30 mg/m2 was effective until week 17 (producing > 80% mortality), surpassing deltamethrin WG 30 mg/m2 which only lasted until week 10. This was supported by post-hoc test analyses which demonstrated that deltamethrin SC-PE 30 mg/m2 produced the highest mean of mortality in laboratory-reared Aedes species and the wild Ae. albopictus. However, the effective duration of action of deltamethrin SC-PE (17 weeks) was less than the recommended period by WHO (6 months) but was reasonable given that the spraying was undertaken outdoor. This preliminary data could be of use for the deployment of locally adapted ORS operation in controlling dengue.

A novel approach to decrease dengue incidence involves the introduction of Wolbachia endosymbionts that block dengue virus transmission into populations of the primary vector mosquito, Aedes aegypti. The wMel Wolbachia strain has previously been trialed in open releases of Ae. aegypti; however, the wAlbB strain has been shown to maintain higher density than wMel at high larval rearing temperatures. Releases of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes carrying wAlbB were carried out in 6 diverse sites in greater Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with high endemic dengue transmission. The strain was successfully established and maintained at very high population frequency at some sites or persisted with additional releases following fluctuations at other sites. Based on passive case monitoring, reduced human dengue incidence was observed in the release sites when compared to control sites. The wAlbB strain of Wolbachia provides a promising option as a tool for dengue control, particularly in very hot climates.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is maintained in the sylvatic cycle in West Africa and is transmitted by Aedes mosquito species to monkeys. In 2006, four verified CHIKV isolates were obtained during a survey of arboviruses in monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) in Pahang state, Peninsular Malaysia. RNA was extracted from the CHIKV isolates and used in reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) to amplify PCR fragments for sequencing. Nucleic acid primers were designed to generate overlapping PCR fragments that covered the whole viral sequence. A total of 11,238 base pairs (bp) corresponding to open reading frames (ORFs) from our isolates and 47 other registered isolates in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) were used to elucidate sequences, amino acids, and phylogenetic relationships and to estimate divergence times by using MEGA 7.0 and the Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all CHIKV isolates could be classified into the Asian genotype and clustered with Bagan Panchor clades, which are associated with the chikungunya outbreak reported in 2006, with sequence and amino acid similarities of 99.9% and 99.7%, respectively. Minor amino acid differences were found between human and non-human primate isolates. Amino acid analysis showed a unique amino acid at position 221 in the nsP1region, at which a glycine (G) was found only in monkey isolates, whereas arginine (R) was found at the same position only in human isolates. The time to the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) estimation indicated that CHIKV probably started to diverge from human to non-human primates in approximately 2004 in Malaysia. The results suggested that CHIKV in non-human primates probably resulted from the spillover of the virus from humans. Floating net cages have become important in the last decade and it has been supported and encouraged by Sarawak State Government. There is no such a carrying capacity study has been done at Batang Ai Reservoir. Therefore, estimating the reservoir’s carrying capacity due to fish farming culture activities was an important tool for making environmentally related decisions prior to any potential negative impacts. Numerical computer analysis was used to simulate the initial average concentration of total Phosphorus (TP) in the reservoir. The computed TP result was applied into the empirical models to estimate the fish productions carrying capacity for Batang Ai reservoir, which was referred to allowable TP of 0.035 mg L−1 as recommended by Category C, Malaysia National Lake Water Quality Standard. The carrying capacity for the reservoir was estimated at 4,239 tonnes per year, which was approximately five times higher than the present fish productions level as reported by local published journals. Thus, it can be concluded that future expansion of fish production in Batang Ai reservoir is still feasible.

BACKGROUND Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) share common risk factors. They could therefore be expressed in a single patient. However, the prevalence, clinical characteristics and prognosis of individuals with comorbid IPF and COPD are not known. METHOD From 2003 to 2007, the Korean Interstitial Lung Disease Study Group created a register for idiopathic interstitial pneumonia using 2002 ATS/ERS (American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society) criteria. Of the 1546 IPF patients assessed, 143 had decreased lung function consistent with COPD (IPF-COPD). COPD was diagnosed based on age (≥40 years) and pulmonary function (forced expiratory volume in 1 sec [FEV1]/forced vital capacity [FVC] ratio RESULTS The median age of the IPF-COPD group was 71.0 years (interquartile range 66.0-76.0); most patients were male (88.1%). FVC (%) was significantly higher in the IPF-COPD group; however, FEV1 (%) was significantly lower in the IPF-COPD group (P CONCLUSION The prevalence of IPF-COPD was estimated to be ∼9.2% among all IPF patients; prognosis of patients with IPF-COPD was not worse than those with IPF alone. .

Wilt and death of fruit trees was surveyed from 1990 to 1996. Most trees with decline symptoms in central and southern Taiwan had brown root rot caused by Phellinus noxius. The infected trees included litchi, sugar-apple, plumum, pear, loquat, persimmon, carambola, wax apple, grape, and jellyfig, with ages ranging from young seedlings up to 10-year-old trees. Symptoms were leaf discoloration, unthrifty appearance, and eventual death. Upon inoculation of the roots with P. noxius grown in a wheat-oat medium, healthy seedlings of these 10 tree species were killed. P. noxius was reisolated from diseased tissues of inoculated roots. The isolates of P. noxius obtained from different hosts were similar in morphological characteristics. Host specificity among the tested isolates was not observed in the cross-inoculation test, but variability in virulence was noted in some tests. Mycelial growth of different isolates of P. noxius showed similar temperature response, but the growth rates varied dramatically. Fruiting bodies were rarely found in the field. However, the fungus produced fruiting bodies artificially, on a sawdust medium, that were similar to those produced on the lower stems of declining trees. Brown root rot can be induced by replanting seedlings in infested soil or by contact with the diseased or dead roots. P. noxius causing brown root rot of these 10 fruit trees has not been previously reported.

A preliminary field study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of a mosquito trap; Mosquito Killing System (MKS) in capturing mosquitoes and other insects. MKS has an automatic activation by the use of a photocell. It is also supplemented with carbon dioxide and heat as attractants for mosquitoes and other insects. Three units of MKS were employed at three different locations within two study sites for ten days. The mosquitoes and other insects that were trapped in MKS were collected and morphologically identified daily in the laboratory. A total of 1,928 mosquitoes and other insects were trapped in all units of MKS. High numbers of mosquitoes (93.05%), particularly Aedes sp. and Culex sp. were captured from MKS. Among these, Culex quinquefasciatus (91.81%) was most abundant species collected. Only 0.84% of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus trapped in MKS. Female mosquitoes (83.44%) were found to be more attracted to MKS compared to male mosquitoes of various species. These findings illustrated the potency of MKS utilization in surveillance and control activities of Cx. quinquefasciatus; a nuisance mosquito and also potential vector of urban brancroftian filariasis in Malaysia. The efficacy of a 2.15% imidacloprid gel bait against laboratory strain Periplaneta americana and Blattella germanica was evaluated under laboratory conditions. The susceptibility trend of both species towards imidacloprid was: adult male < adult female < nymphs. All stages of both species were dead within 10 days in primary poisoning testing. Periplaneta americana adult male (LT50 = 0.47 h; LT95 = 5.24 h) died fastest, while nymphs of B. germanica took the longest time to reach 95% mortality (LT95 = 43.84 h). In indirect exposure via secondary poisoning, only adult males of P. americana (LT50 = 100.63 h) and B. germanica (LT50 = 54.66 h) obtained 50% mortality before the testing ended. No complete mortalities were achieved in any stages of both species within 10 days of secondary poisoning testing. Therefore, imidacloprid gel bait used in this study was able to cause complete mortalities within less than 2 days of 10-day primary poisoning testing but less effective in the 10-day secondary poisoning testing. A multiple regression method (MRM) is used for the first time with Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to estimate formaldehyde (HCHO) column over Asia in two categorized areas: (1) anthropogenic areas in East Asia (east-central China, Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo) and (2) biogenic and pyrogenic areas (Indochina and South Borneo). In order to determine the multiple regression equations (MREs) for each study area, monthly mean and daily values of Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) level, land surface temperature (LST), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and fire radiative power (FRP) from 2005 to 2006 were used as independent variable candidates and monthly mean and daily HCHO measured by OMI (HCHOOMI) for the same period was used as the dependent variable. The MREs estimated HCHO (HCHOMRM) with inputs of independent variable data for from 2005 to 2006 whereas they estimated HCHO (HCHOVAL) with inputs of independent variable data in 2007. The agreement between HCHOOMI and HCHOVAL is comparable with that between HCHOOMI and HCHOMRM in both monthly and daily scale. The average correlation coefficient, slope, mean bias, mean absolute error, root mean square error, and percent difference between monthly HCHOOMI and monthly HCHOVAL (between daily HCHOOMI and daily HCHOMRM) are 0.89 (0.58), 0.77 (0.34), -0.82 A— 1015 molecules cm-2 (-0.91 A— 1015 molecules cm-2), 1.28 A— 1015 molecules cm-2 (3.01 A— 1015 molecules cm-2), 1.75 A— 1015 molecules cm-2 (4.32 A— 1015 molecules cm-2), 10.2% (24.1%). MRM can be a useful tool to provide HCHO in certain area in Asia.

In this paper, we will start off by introducing the classical Ross–Macdonald model for vector-borne diseases which we use to describe the transmission of dengue between humans and Aedes mosquitoes in Shah Alam, which is a city and the state capital of Selangor, Malaysia. We will focus on analysing the effect of using the Mosquito Home System (MHS), which is an example of an autodissemination trap, in reducing the number of dengue cases by changing the Ross–Macdonald model. By using the national dengue data from Malaysia, we are able to estimate λ, which represents the initial growth rate of the dengue epidemic, and this allows us to estimate the number of mosquitoes in Malaysia. A mathematical expression is also constructed which allows us to estimate the potential number of breeding sites of Aedes mosquitoes. By using the data available from the MHS trial carried out in Section 15 of Shah Alam, we included the potential effect of the MHS into the dengue model and thus modelled the impact MHS has on the spread of dengue within the trial area. We then extended our results to analyse the effect of the MHSs on reducing the number of dengue cases in the whole of Malaysia. A new model was constructed with a basic reproduction number, R0,MalaMHS, which allows us to identify the required MHSs coverage needed to achieve extinction in Malaysia. Numerical simulations and tables of results were also produced to illustrate our results.

Purpose: This study investigated the feasibility of a pilot version of Vocabulary Assessment for Cantonese-speaking Adolescents (VACA) in evaluating the vocabulary ability of Cantonese-speaking adolescents with and without language impairment (LI) in Hong Kong.Method: A list of 300 vocabularies was located from local textbooks, dictionaries, and multimedia resources. The list was reduced to 91 vocabularies according to secondary school teachers' judgment. Three receptive tasks, two expressive tasks, and a vocabulary-learning strategy task were devised to examine five domains: (1) academic words, (2) idioms, (3) slangs, (4) homophones, and (5) lexical inferencing strategies.
