The gas cycling in the circumgalactic regions of galaxies is known to be multi-phase. The MUSE-ALMA Haloes survey gathers a large multi-wavelength observational sample of absorption and emission data with the goal to significantly advance our understanding of the physical properties of such CGM gas. A key component of the MUSE-ALMA Haloes survey is the multi-facility observational campaign conducted with VLT/MUSE, ALMA and HST. MUSE-ALMA Haloes targets comprise 19 VLT/MUSE IFS quasar fields, including 32 $z_{\rm abs}, 19 pages, 4 figures. This is the final (proof-corrected) version, published in MNRAS. The distribution of gas and metals in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) plays a critical role in how galaxies evolve. The MUSE-ALMA Halos survey combines MUSE, ALMA and HST observations to constrain the properties of the multi-phase gas in the CGM and the galaxies associated with the gas probed in absorption. In this paper, we analyse the properties of galaxies associated with 32 strong \ion{H}{i} Ly-$\alpha$ absorbers at redshift $0.2 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.4$. We detect 79 galaxies within $\pm 500$ \kms \!of the absorbers in our 19 MUSE fields. These associated galaxies are found at physical distances from 5.7 kpc and reach star-formation rates as low as $0.1$ \Moyr. The significant number of associated galaxies allows us to map their physical distribution on the $\Delta v$ and $b$ plane. Building on previous studies, we examine the physical and nebular properties of these associated galaxies and find the following: i) 27/32 absorbers have galaxy counterparts and more than 50 per cent of the absorbers have two or more associated galaxies, ii) the \ion{H}{i} column density of absorbers is anti-correlated with the impact parameter (scaled by virial radius) of the nearest galaxy as expected from simulations, iii) the metallicity of associated galaxies is typically larger than the absorber metallicity which decreases at larger impact parameters. It becomes clear that while strong \ion{H}{i} absorbers are typically associated with more than a single galaxy, we can use them to statistically map the gas and metal distribution in the CGM., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures and 10 pages of appendices. We present mass estimates of supermassive black holes in six nearby fast rotating early-type galaxies (NGC4339, NGC4434, NGC4474, NGC4551, NGC4578 and NGC4762) with effective stellar velocity dispersion around 100 km/s. We use near-infrared laser-guide adaptive optics observations with the GEMINI/NIFS to derive stellar kinematics in the galactic nuclei, and SAURON observations from the ATLAS3D Survey for large-scale kinematics. We build axisymmetric Jeans anisotropic models and axisymmetric Schwarzschild dynamical models. Both modelling approaches recover consistent orbital anisotropies and black hole masses within 1-2sigma confidence level, except for one galaxy for which the difference is just above the 3sigma level. Two black holes (NGC4339 and NGC4434) are amongst the largest outliers from the current black hole mass - velocity dispersion relation, with masses of $(4.3^{+4.8}_{-2.3})\times10^7$ and $(7.0^{+2.0}_{-2.8})\times10^7$ M$_\odot$, respectively ($3\sigma$ confidence level). The black holes in NGC4578 and NGC4762 lie on the scaling relation with masses of $(1.9^{+0.6}_{-1.4})\times10^7$ and $(2.3^{+0.9}_{-0.6})\times10^7$ M$_\odot$, respectively (3sigma confidence level). Thinned CCD detectors display fringing which arises from the interference of multiply reflected light in the layers of the CCD. If the layer construction - the thicknesses and refractive indexes of the layers - is known, then the observed fringing can be accurately modelled and used to correct imaging and spectroscopic data for its effects. In practice the specifications on the actual deposited layer thicknesses may not be known to sufficient accuracy to predict the fringe behaviour. Thus calibration data, in the form of monochromatic flat fields, is required and can be modelled using the technique outlined by Malamuth et al. 2003, which has been applied to ACS CCDs. Initial tests to model the observed fringing of the FORS2 MIT CCD are described. A set of six monochromatic flat fields was generated by shining light from a tunable monochromator into the FORS2 instrument calibration unit. Peak-to-peak fringe amplitude of 7-8% was measured at a wavelength of 970 nm. In order to model the CCD structure, a series of monochromatic flats at closely spaced wavelengths is required, which would have been very time-consuming to acquire with the monochromator. An alternative strategy is outlined. The fringing characteristics of CCDs should be systematically calibrated while still in the test laboratory. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The SAURON integral-field survey reveals that small (~0.1,Re) kinematically decoupled cores (KDCs) in early-type galaxies are increasingly young toward the center and are typically found in fast-rotating galaxies, while large KDCs (~0.5 Re) have homogeneously old stars and are present in non-rotating galaxies (McDermid et al. 2006). GALEX UV imaging further allows the direct identification of regions of recent star formation (≤0.5 Gyr). In NGC 2974 for example, young stars are identified in the center and an outer ring Jeong et al. 2006). Nuclear and inner ionised-gas rings (Sarzi et al. 2006) then suggest that current star formation is bar-driven. The CO detection rate of SAURON early-type galaxies is ≈40% (Combes et al. in prep.). Synthesis imaging reveals that it is generally contained in a well-ordered central disk, both in galaxies with a (young) central stellar disk (e.g. NGC 4459, NGC 4526) or a (young) KDC (e.g. NGC 3032, NGC 4150) (Young et al. in prep.). CO also traces well the young stellar populations and ionised gas distribution and kinematics, but in KDCs not always the stellar kinematics Emsellem et al. 2004; Sarzi et al. 2006; Kuntschner et al. 2006).

We combine SAURON integral field data of a representative sample of local early-type, red sequence galaxies with Spitzer/IRAC imaging in order to investigate the presence of trace star formation in these systems. With the Spitzer data, we identify galaxies hosting low-level star formation, as traced by PAH emission, with measured star formation rates that compare well to those estimated from other tracers. This star formation proceeds according to established scaling relations with molecular gas content, in surface density regimes characteristic of disk galaxies and circumnuclear starbursts. We find that star formation in early-type galaxies happens exclusively in fast-rotating systems and occurs in two distinct modes. In the first, star formation is a diffuse process, corresponding to widespread young stellar populations and high molecular gas content. The equal presence of co- and counter-rotating components in these systems strongly implies an external origin for the star-forming gas, and we argue that these star formation events may be the final stages of (mostly minor) mergers that build up the bulges of red sequence lenticulars. In the second mode of star formation, the process is concentrated into well-defined disk or ring morphologies, outside of which the host galaxies exhibit uniformly evolved stellar populations. This implies that these star formation events represent rejuvenations within previously quiescent stellar systems. Evidence for earlier star formation events similar to these in all fast rotating early-type galaxies suggests that this mode of star formation may be common to all such galaxies, with a duty cycle of roughly 1/10, and likely contributes to the embedded, co-rotating inner stellar disks ubiquitous in this population., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 48 pages, 36 figures. Supermassive black holes are a key element in our understanding of how galaxies form. Most of the progress in this very active field of research is based on just ~30 determinations of black hole mass, accumulated over the past decade. By detecting ionised-gas emission in 75% of the cases, the SAURON integral-field spectroscopic survey has further demonstrated that early-type galaxies often display nebular emission. Furthermore, the SAURON data have shown that such emission comes with an intriguing variety of morphologies, kinematic behaviours and line ratios. Perhaps most puzzling was the finding that round and slowly rotating objects generally display uncorrelated stellar and gaseous angular momenta, consistent with an external origin for the gas, whereas flatter and fast rotating galaxies host preferentially co-rotating gas and stars, suggesting internal production of gas. Alternatively, a bias against the internal production of ionised gas and against the acquisition of retrograde material may be present in these two kinds of objects, respectively. In light of the different content of hot gas in these systems, with slowly rotating objects being the only systems capable of hosting massive X-ray halos, we suggest that a varying importance of evaporation of warm gas in the hot interstellar medium can contribute to explain the difference in the relative behaviour of gas and stars in these two kinds of objects. Namely, whereas in X-ray bright and slowly rotating galaxies stellar-loss material would quickly evaporate in the hot medium, in X-ray faint and fast rotating objects such material would be allowed to lose angular momentum and settle in a disk, which could also obstruct the subsequent acquisition of retrograde gas. We present spatially resolved intermediate resolution spectroscopy of a sample of twelve E+A galaxies in the z=0.32 rich galaxy cluster AC 114, obtained with the FLAMES multi-integral field unit system on the European Southern Observatory's VLT. Previous integrated spectroscopy of all these galaxies by Couch & Sharples (1987) had shown them to have strong Balmer line absorption and an absence of [OII 3727] emission -- the defining characteristics of the``E+A'' spectral signature, indicative of an abrupt halt to a recent episode of quite vigorous star formation. We have used our spectral data to determine the radial variation in the strength of Hdelta absorption in these galaxies and hence map out the distribution of this recently formed stellar population. Such information provides important clues as to what physical event might have been responsible for this quite dramatic change in star formation activity in these galaxies' recent past. We find a diversity of behaviour amongst these galaxies in terms of the radial variation in Hdelta absorption: Four galaxies show little Hdelta absorption across their entire extent; it would appear they were misidentified as E+A galaxies in the earlier integrated spectroscopic studies. The remainder show strong Hdelta absorption, with a gradient that is either negative (Hdelta equivalent width decreasing with radius), flat, or positive. By comparing with numerical simulations we suggest that the first of these different types of radial behaviour provides evidence for a merger/interaction origin, whereas the latter two types of behaviour are more consistent with the truncation of star formation in normal disk galaxies. We present SAURON integral-field observations of the S0 galaxy NGC7332. Existing broad-band ground-based and HST photometry reveals a double disk structure and a boxy bulge interpreted as a bar viewed close to edge-on. The SAURON two-dimensional stellar kinematic maps confirm the existence of the bar and inner disk but also uncover the presence of a cold counter-rotating stellar component within the central 250 pc. The Hbeta and [OIII] emission line maps show that the ionised gas has a complex morphology and kinematics, including both a component counter-rotating with respect to the stars and a fainter co-rotating one. Analysis of the absorption line-strength maps show that NGC7332 is young everywhere. The presence of a large-scale bar can explain most of those properties, but the fact that we see a significant amount of unsettled gas, together with a few peculiar features in the maps, suggest that NGC7332 is still evolving. Interactions as well as bar-driven processes must thus have played an important role in the formation and evolution of NGC7332, and presumably of S0 galaxies in general., 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have carried out 1mm/3mm continuum and 12CO(2−1) line high resolution observations to identify the footprints of AGN feedback on 3C 236. The CO emission comes from a spatially resolved disk characterized by a regular rotating pattern. Within the limits imposed by the sensitivity and velocity coverage of our data, we do not detect any outflow signatures in the cold molecular gas. Re-inspection of optical and IR spectra, shows the presence of a previously unknown ionized gas outflow. The star-formation efficiency in 3C 236, is consistent with the value measured in normal galaxies, which follow the canonical Kennicutt-Schmidt law. This result, confirmed to hold in other young radio sources examined in this work, is in stark contrast with the factor of 10–50 lower SFE that has been claimed to characterize evolved powerful radio galaxies. The recent reactivation of the AGN in 3C 236 is a likely explanation for the early evolutionary status of its molecular disk.

Excluding those unsettled systems undergoing mergers, bright galaxies come in two flavours: with and without discs. In this work we look for photometric evidence for presence of discs and compare it with kinematic results of the ATLAS3D survey (Cappellari et al. 2011). We fit a Sérsic (1968) function to azimuthally averaged light profiles of ATLAS3D galaxies to derive single component fits and, subsequently, we fit a combination of the Sérsic function (free index n) and an exponential function (n=1) with the purpose of decomposing the light profiles into “bulge” and “disc” components (B+D model) of all non-barred sample galaxies. We compare the residuals of the B+D models with those of the single Sérsic fits and select the B+D model as preferred only when the improvement is substantial and there are no correlations within residuals. We find that the high angular momentum objects (fast rotators) are disc dominated systems with bulges of typically low n (when their light profiles can be decomposed) or are best represented with a single Sérsic function with a low Sérsic index (n

We determine central values and radial trends in the stellar populations of the bulges of a sample of 28 edge-on S0-Sb disk galaxies, 22 of which are boxy/peanut-shaped (and therefore barred). Our principal findings are the following. (1) At a given velocity dispersion, the central stellar populations of galaxies with boxy/peanut-shaped bulges are indistinguishable from those of early-type (elliptical and S0) galaxies. Either secular evolution affects stellar populations no differently to monolithic collapse or mergers, or secular evolution is not important in the central regions of these galaxies, despite the fact that they are barred. (2) The radial metallicity gradients of boxy/peanut-shaped bulges are uncorrelated with velocity dispersion and are, on average, shallower than those of unbarred early-type galaxies. This is qualitatively consistent with chemodynamical models of bar formation, in which radial inflow and outflow smears out pre-existing gradients.

Recently, massive early-type galaxies have shed their red-and-dead moniker, thanks to the discovery that many host residual star formation. As part of the ATLAS-3D project, we have conducted a complete, volume-limited survey of the molecular gas in 260 local early-type galaxies with the IRAM-30m telescope and the CARMA interferometer, in an attempt to understand the fuel powering this star formation. We find that around 22% of early-type galaxies in the local volume host molecular gas reservoirs. This detection rate is independent of galaxy luminosity and environment. Here we focus on how kinematic misalignment measurements and gas-to-dust ratios can be used to put constraints on the origin of the cold ISM in these systems. The origin of the cold ISM seems to depend strongly on environment, with misaligned, dust poor gas (indicative of externally acquired material) being common in the field but completely absent in rich groups and in the Virgo cluster. Very massive galaxies also appear to be devoid of accreted gas. This suggests that in the field mergers and/or cold gas accretion dominate the gas supply, while in clusters internal secular processes become more important. This implies that environment has a strong impact on the cold gas properties of ETGs.

NGC 1266 is a nearby field galaxy observed as part of the ATLAS3D survey (Cappellari et al. 2011). NGC 1266 has been shown to host a compact (< 200 pc) molecular disk and a mass-loaded molecular outflow driven by the AGN (Alatalo et al. 2011). Very Long Basline Array (VLBA) observations at 1.65 GHz revealed a compact (diameter < 1.2 pc), high bright- ness temperature continuum source most consistent with a low-level AGN origin. The VLBA continuum source is positioned at the center of the molecular disk and may be responsible for the expulsion of molecular gas in NGC 1266. Thus, the candidate AGN-driven molecular outflow in NGC 1266 supports the picture in which AGNs do play a significant role in the quenching of star formation and ultimately the evolution of the red sequence of galaxies., 2 pages, Proceedings from IAU Symposium 290: Feeding compact objects, Accretion on all scales

A public release of slitless spectra, obtained with ACS/WFC and the G800L grism, is presented. Spectra were automatically extracted in a uniform way from 153 archival fields (or "associations") distributed across the two Galactic caps, covering all observations to 2008. The ACS G800L grism provides a wavelength range of 0.55-1.00 \mu$m, with a dispersion of $40 \ \AA / pixel$ and a resolution of $\sim 80\ \AA$ for point-like sources. The ACS G800L images and matched direct images were reduced with an automatic pipeline that handles all steps from archive retrieval, alignment and astrometric calibration, direct image combination, catalogue generation, spectral extraction and collection of metadata. The large number of extracted spectra (73,581) demanded automatic methods for quality control and an automated classification algorithm was trained on the visual inspection of several thousand spectra. The final sample of quality controlled spectra includes 47,919 datasets (65% of the total number of extracted spectra) for $32,149$ unique objects, with a median $i_{\rm AB}$-band magnitude of 23.7, reaching 26.5 AB for the faintest objects. Each released dataset contains science-ready 1D and 2D spectra, as well as multi-band image cutouts of corresponding sources and a useful preview page summarising the direct and slitless data, astrometric and photometric parameters. In order to characterize the slitless spectra, emission-line flux and equivalent width sensitivity of the ACS data were compared with public ground-based spectra in the GOODS-South field. In this short paper, we present a few preliminary results from the ambitious ATLAS3D project, which intends to probe the first volume-limited sample of early-type galaxies observed via multi-band photometry, integral-field spectroscopy, radio and millimeter observations, and supported by a large library of numerical simulations and models. We more specifically address the existence of two main families of early-type galaxies, the slow and fast rotators. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

We present grism spectra of emission-line galaxies (ELGs) from 0.6-1.6 microns from the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope. These new infrared grism data augment previous optical Advanced Camera for Surveys G800L 0.6-0.95 micron grism data in GOODS-South from the PEARS program, extending the wavelength covereage well past the G800L red cutoff. The ERS grism field was observed at a depth of 2 orbits per grism, yielding spectra of hundreds of faint objects, a subset of which are presented here. ELGs are studied via the Ha, [OIII], and [OII] emission lines detected in the redshift ranges 0.22., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. Updated to include referee comments. We study resolution effects in numerical simulations of gas-rich (20% of the total baryonic mass) major mergers, and show that the formation of slowly-rotating elliptical galaxies requires a resolution that is beyond the present-day standards to be properly modelled. Our findings show that a high-enough resolution is required to accurately model the global properties of merger remnants and the evolution of their angular momentum. The role of wet mergers of spiral galaxies in the formation of slow-rotating ellipticals may therefore have been underestimated. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

We use the integral-field spectrograph SAURON to measure the stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution and absorption line strengths out to four effective radii (Re) in the early-type galaxies NGC 3379 and NGC 821. With our newly developed observing technique we can now probe these faint regions in galaxies that were previously not accessible with traditional long-slit spectroscopy. We make optimal use of the large field-of-view and high throughput of the spectrograph: by adding the signal of all ~1400 lenslets into one spectrum, we obtain sufficient signal-to-noise in a few hours of observing time to reliably measure the absorption line kinematics and line strengths out to large radius. We find that the line strength gradients previously observed within 1 Re remain constant out to at least 4 Re, which puts constraints on the merger histories of these galaxies. The stellar halo populations are old and metal-poor. By constructing orbit-based Schwarzschild dynamical models we find that dark matter is necessary to explain the observed kinematics in NGC 3379 and NGC 821, with 30 - 50 per cent of the total matter being dark within 4 Re. The radial anisotropy in our best-fit halo models is less than in our models without halo, due to differences in orbital structure. The halo also has an effect on the Mgb - Vesc relation: its slope is steeper when a dark matter halo is added to the model., 15 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

We present selected results from integral-field spectroscopy of 48 early-type galaxies observed as part of the SAURON survey. Maps of the Hbeta, Fe5015, Mgb and Fe5270 indices in the Lick/IDS system were derived for each of the survey galaxies. The metal line strength maps show generally negative gradients with increasing radius roughly consistent with the morphology of the light profiles. Remarkable deviations from this general trend exist, particularly the Mgb isoindex contours appear to be flatter than the isophotes of the surface brightness for about 40% of our galaxies without significant dust features. Generally these galaxies exhibit significant rotation. We infer from this that the fast-rotating component features a higher metallicity and/or an increased Mg/Fe ratio as compared to the galaxy as a whole. We also use the line strengths maps to compute average values integrated over circular apertures of one effective radius, and derive luminosity weighted ages and metallicities. The lenticular galaxies show a wide range in age and metallicity estimates, while elliptical galaxies tend to occupy regions of older stellar populations.

We report on observations of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) selected from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey at mean redshift z~4, 5 and 6, obtained with FORS2 spectrograph at the ESO-VLT.This program has yielded spectroscopic identifications for 114 galaxies of which 51 are at z~4, 31 at z~5, and 32 at z~6. The adopted selection criteria are effective, identifying galaxies at the expected redshift with minimal foreground contamination. Once selection effects are properly accounted for, the rest-frame UV spectra of the higher-redshift LBGs appear to be similar to their counterparts at z~3. As at z~3, LBGs at z~4 and z~5 show Lya both in emission and in absorption; when in absorption, strong interstellar lines and red UV spectra are observed, a fact also measured at z~2 and 3. At z~6, sensitivity issues bias our sample towards galaxies with Lya in emission; nevertheless, these spectra appear to be similar to their lower-redshift counterparts. As in other studies at similar redshifts, we find clear evidence that brighter LBGs tend to have weaker Lya emission lines. At fixed rest-frame UV luminosity, the equivalent width of the Lya emission line is larger at higher redshifts. At all redshifts where the measurements can be reliably made, the redshift of the Lya emission line turns out to be larger than that of the interstellar absorption lines,with a median velocity difference DeltaV~400 km/s at z~4 and 5, consistent with results at lower redshifts. This shows that powerful, large-scale winds are common at high redshift.In general,there is no strong correlation between the morphology of the UV light and the spectroscopic properties. However, galaxies with deep interstellar absorption lines and strong Lya absorption appear to be more diffuse than galaxies with Lya in emission.(abridged), 58 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The ESO VIMOS-IFU pipeline produces wavelength calibrated spectra for all working fibres and each quadrant separately. Using a recently carried out science program with VIMOS-IFU (HR-blue, $13" × 13"$ field-of-view, hereafter FoV) I analyse the quality of the basic calibrations. Furthermore, I study the instrumental resolving power as function of wavelength and position within the FoV. A rather large variation between 1.8–3.0, A (FWHM) is found. There are clear trends with wavelength, but most importantly, significant differences between Fibre Modules are visible. The differences between modules translate into sharp steps within the FoV and can jeopardize the scientific exploitation if not corrected for.

We analyse the orbital distribution of E and S0 galaxies using SAURON integral-field stellar kinematics. We construct the anisotropy (V/sigma,epsilon) diagram, for the 48 E/S0 galaxies from the SAURON survey. For a subsample of 24 galaxies consistent with axisymmetry, we use three-integral axisymmetric Schwarzschild dynamical models to recover the detailed orbital distribution and we find good agreement with the anisotropy derived from the (V/sigma,epsilon) diagram. In the companion Paper IX we show that the early-type galaxies can be subdivided into two classes of systems with or without a significant amount of specific stellar angular momentum. Here we show that the two classes have different distributions on the (V/sigma,epsilon) diagram. The slow rotators are more common among the most massive systems and are generally classified as E from photometry alone. We present results from our ongoing effort to understand the nature and evolution of nearby galaxies using the SAURON integral-field spectrograph. In this proceeding we focus on the study of the particular case formed by the interacting galaxies NGC 5953 and NGC 5954. We present stellar and gas kinematics of the central regions of NGC5953. We use a simple procedure to determine the age of the stellar populations in the central regions and argue that we may be witnessing the formation of a kinematically decoupled component (hereafter KDC) from cold gas being acquired during the ongoing interaction with NGC 5954.

We summarise the results and achievements of integral-field spectroscopy of early-type galaxies, observed as part of a survey using both the SAURON and OASIS spectrographs. From the perspective of integral-field spectroscopy, these otherwise smooth and featureless objects show a wealth of structure, both in their stellar kinematics and populations. We focus on the stellar content, and examine properties on both kiloparsec scales with SAURON, and scales of 100's of parsecs with OASIS. These complementary studies reveal two types of kinematically distinct components (KDCs), differing primarily in their intrinsic sizes. In previous studies, KDCs and their host galaxies have generally been found to be unremarkable in other aspects. We show that large KDCs, typical of the well-studied cases, indeed show little or no age differences with their host galaxy. The KDCs detected with the higher spatial-resolution of OASIS are intrinsically smaller and include, in contrast, a significant fraction of young stars. We speculate on the relationship between KDCs and their host galaxies, and the implications for young populations in early-type galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures. We present results from a search for high-redshift J--band ``dropout'' galaxies in the portion of the GOODS southern field that is covered by extremely deep imaging from the Hubble Ultradeep Field (HUDF).Using observations at optical, near-infrared and mid-infrared wavelengths from the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes and the ESO-VLT, we search for very massive galaxies at high redshifts and find one particularly remarkable candidate. Its spectral energy distribution is consistent with a galaxy at z ~ 6.5 and a stellar mass of 6x10e11 M(sun) (for a Salpeter IMF). We interpret a prominent photometric break between the near-infrared and Spitzer bandpasses as the 3646A Balmer discontinuity. The best-fitting models have low reddening and ages of several hundred Myr, placing the formation of the bulk of the stars at z > 9. Alternative models of dusty galaxies at z ~ 2.5 are possible but provide significantly poorer fits. The object is detected with Spitzer at 24 micron. This emission originats from an obscured active nucleus or star formation. We present optical and near-infrared spectroscopy which has, thus far, failed to detect any spectral features. This helps limit the solution in which the galaxy is a starburst or active galaxy at z ~ 2.5. If the high-redshift interpretation is correct, this object would be an example of a galaxy that formed by a process strongly resembling traditional models of monolithic collapse, in a way which a very large mass of stars formed within a remarkably short period of time, at very high redshift., Accepted for publication in Ap.J. 31 pages, 6 diagrams

In around ≈25% of early-type galaxies (ETGs) UV emission from young stellar populations is present. Molecular gas reservoirs have been detected in these systems (e.g. Young et al. (2011), providing the fuel for this residual star-formation. The environment in which this molecular gas is found is quite different than that in spiral galaxies however, with harsher radiation fields, deeper potentials and high metallicity and alpha-element abundances. Here we report on one element of our multi-faceted programme to understand the similarities and differences between the gas reservoirs in spirals and ETGs. We use spatially resolved observations from the CARMA mm-wave interferometer to investigate the size of the molecular reservoirs in the the CO-rich ATLAS3D ETGs (survey described in Alatalo et al. 2012, submitted). We find that the molecular gas extent is smaller in absolute terms in ETGs than in late-type galaxies, but that the size distributions are similar once scaled by the galaxies optical/stellar characteristic scale-lengths (Fig 1, left). Amongst ETGs, we find that the extent of the molecular gas is independent of the kinematic misalignment, despite the many reasons why misaligned gas might have a smaller extent. The extent of the molecular gas does depend on environment, with Virgo cluster ETGs having less extended molecular gas reservoirs (Fig 1, right). Whatever the cause, this further emphases that cluster ETGs follow different evolutionary pathways from those in the field. Full details of this work will be presented in Davis et al. The interpretation that bimodal colour distributions of globular clusters (GCs) reflect bimodal metallicity distributions has been challenged. Non-linearities in the colour to metallicity conversions caused by the horizontal branch (HB) stars may be responsible for transforming a unimodal metallicity distribution into a bimodal (optical) colour distribution. We study optical/near-infrared (NIR) colour distributions of the GC systems in 14 E/S0 galaxies. We test whether the bimodal feature, generally present in optical colour distributions, remains in the optical/NIR ones. The latter colour combination is a better metallicity proxy than the former. We use KMM and GMM tests to quantify the probability that different colour distributions are better described by a bimodal, as opposed to a unimodal distribution. We find that double-peaked colour distributions are more commonly seen in optical than in optical/NIR colours. For some of the galaxies where the optical (g-z) distribution is clearly bimodal, the (g-K) and (z-K) distributions are better described by a unimodal distribution. The two most cluster-rich galaxies in our sample, NGC4486 and NGC4649, show some interesting differences. The (g-K) distribution of NGC4649 is better described by a bimodal distribution, while this is true for the (g-K) distribution of NGC4486 GCs only if restricted to a brighter sub-sample with small K-band errors (< 0.05 mag). Formally, the K-band photometric errors cannot be responsible for blurring bimodal metallicity distributions to unimodal (g-K) colour distributions. However, simulations including the extra scatter in the colour-colour diagrams (not fully accounted for in the photometric errors) show that such scatter may contribute to the disappearance of bimodality in (g-K) for the full NGC4486 sample. For the less cluster-rich galaxies results are inconclusive due to poorer statistics. [Abridged]
