Abstract: Abstract LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a second-generation direct dark matter experiment with spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering sensitivity above $${1.4 \times 10^{-48}}\, {\hbox {cm}}^{2}$$ 1.4 × 10 - 48 cm 2 for a WIMP mass of $${40}\, \hbox {GeV}/{\hbox {c}}^{2}$$ 40 GeV / c 2 and a $${1000}\, \hbox {days}$$ 1000 days exposure. LZ achieves this sensitivity through a combination of a large $${5.6}\, \hbox {t}$$ 5.6 t fiducial volume, active inner and outer veto systems, and radio-pure construction using materials with inherently low radioactivity content. The LZ collaboration performed an extensive radioassay campaign over a period of six years to inform material selection for construction and provide an input to the experimental background model against which any possible signal excess may be evaluated. The campaign and its results are described in this paper. We present assays of dust and radon daughters depositing on the surface of components as well as cleanliness controls necessary to maintain background expectations through detector construction and assembly. Finally, examples from the campaign to highlight fixed contaminant radioassays for the LZ photomultiplier tubes, quality control and quality assurance procedures through fabrication, radon emanation measurements of major sub-systems, and bespoke detector systems to assay scintillator are presented.

They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants-neutron stars and black holes-are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokandeʼs response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations toward a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature.

Abstract: LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a second-generation direct dark matter experiment with spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering sensitivity above $1.4 \times 10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ for a WIMP mass of 40 GeV/c$^{2}$ and a 1000 d exposure. LZ achieves this sensitivity through a combination of a large 5.6 t fiducial volume, active inner and outer veto systems, and radio-pure construction using materials with inherently low radioactivity content. The LZ collaboration performed an extensive radioassay campaign over a period of six years to inform material selection for construction and provide an input to the experimental background model against which any possible signal excess may be evaluated. The campaign and its results are described in this paper. We present assays of dust and radon daughters depositing on the surface of components as well as cleanliness controls necessary to maintain background expectations through detector construction and assembly. Finally, examples from the campaign to highlight fixed contaminant radioassays for the LZ photomultiplier tubes, quality control and quality assurance procedures through fabrication, radon emanation measurements of major sub-systems, and bespoke detector systems to assay scintillator are presented., Comment: 45 pages (79 inc. tables), 7 figures, 9 tables

Abstract: We describe the design and assembly of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, a direct detection search for cosmic WIMP dark matter particles. The centerpiece of the experiment is a large liquid xenon time projection chamber sensitive to low energy nuclear recoils. Rejection of backgrounds is enhanced by a Xe skin veto detector and by a liquid scintillator Outer Detector loaded with gadolinium for efficient neutron capture and tagging. LZ is located in the Davis Cavern at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. Abstract: The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment will search for dark matter particle interactions with a detector containing a total of 10 tonnes of liquid xenon within a double-vessel cryostat. The large mass and proximity of the cryostat to the active detector volume demand the use of material with extremely low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the radioassay campaign conducted to identify suitable metals, the determination of factors limiting radiopure production, and the selection of titanium for construction of the LZ cryostat and other detector components. Abstract: We present the discovery of gamma-ray emission greater than 350 GeV from the BL Lacertae (BL Lac) object 1ES 2344 + 514 with the Whipple Observatory 10 m gamma-ray telescope. This is the third BL Lac object detected at very high energies (VHE, E > 300 GeV), the other two being Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) and Mrk 501. These three active galactic nuclei are all X-ray selected and have the lowest known redshifts of any BL Lac objects currently identified with declination greater than 0°. The evidence for emission from 1ES 2344 + 514 comes mostly from an apparent flare on 1995 December 20 (UT) during which a 6 σ excess was detected with an average flux of I(> 350 GeV) = 6.6 ± 1.9 × 10-11 photons cm-2 s-1. This is approximately 63% of the VHE emission from the Crab Nebula, the standard candle in this field. Observations taken between 1995 October and 1996 January, excluding the night of the flare, yield a 4 σ detection indicating a flux level of I(> 350 GeV) = 1.1 ± 0.4 × 10-11 photons cm-2 s-1, or about 11% of the VHE Crab Nebula flux. Observations taken between 1996 September and 1997 January on this object did not yield a significant detection of a steady flux or any evidence of flaring activity. The 99.9% confidence level upper limit from these observations is I(> 350 GeV) < 8.2 × 10-12 photons cm-2 s-1, ≲8% of the Crab Nebula flux. The low baseline emission level and variation in the nightly and yearly flux of 1ES 2344 + 514 are the same as the VHE emission characteristics of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501.

Abstract: From considering the effect of γ γ interactions on recently observed TeV gamma-ray spectra, improved limits are set to the density of extragalactic infrared photons which are robust and essentially model independent. The resulting limits are more than an order of magnitude more restrictive than direct observations in the 0.025-0.3 eV regime. These limits are used to improve constraints on radiative neutrino decay in the mass range above 0.05 eV and to rule out very massive objects as providing the dark matter needed to explain galaxy rotation curves. Lower bounds on the maximum distance which TeV gamma rays may probe are also derived.

Abstract: The VERITAS observatory is an imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array located in southern Arizona and covers an energy range between 100 GeV and 30 TeV. The VERITAS collaboration pursues a rigorous observing program that targets a range of key science objectives in astrophysics and particle physics; the understanding of the origin of cosmic rays, the search for supersymmetric dark matter self-annihilation, illuminating the connection between black holes and relativistic jets and constraints to the cosmological diffuse infrared background. We provide a summary of results from the first two years of observations with the full 4-telecope array reported at RICAP09.

Abstract: We report on observations of very high energy gamma rays from the shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) Cassiopeia A with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System stereoscopic array of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in Arizona. The total exposure time for these observations is 22 hr, accumulated between September and November of 2007. The gamma-ray source associated with the SNR Cassiopeia A was detected above 200 GeV with a statistical significance of 8.3 sigma. The estimated integral flux for this gamma-ray source is about 3% of the Crab-Nebula flux. The photon spectrum is compatible with a power law dN/dE proportional to E(-Gamma) with an index Gamma = 2.61 +/- 0.24(stat) +/- 0.2(sys). The data are consistent with a point-like source. We provide a detailed description of the analysis results and discuss physical mechanisms that may be responsible for the observed gamma-ray emission.

Abstract: We present evidence that the very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission coincident with the supernova remnant IC 443 is extended. IC 443 contains one of the best studied sites of supernova remnant/molecular cloud interaction and the pulsar wind nebula CXOU J061705.3+222127, both of which are important targets for VHE observations. VERITAS observed IC 443 for 37.9 hr during 2007 and detected emission above 300 GeV with an excess of 247 events, resulting in a significance of 8.3 standard deviations (sigma) before trials and 7.5 sigma after trials in a point-source search. The emission is centered at 6(h)16(m)51(s)+22 degrees 30'11 '' (J2000)+/- 0 degrees.03(stat)+/- 0 degrees.08(sys), with an intrinsic extension of 0 degrees.16 +/- 0 degrees.03(stat)+/- 0 degrees.04(sys). The VHE spectrum is well fit by a power law (dN/dE = N(0) x(E/TeV)(-Gamma)) with a photon index of 2.99 +/- 0.38(stat)+/- 0.3(sys) and an integral flux above 300 GeV of (4.63 +/- 0.90(stat)+/- 0.93(sys)) x 10(-12) cm(-2) s(-1). These results are discussed in the context of existing models for gamma-ray production in IC 443.

Abstract: HESS J0632+057 is one of only two unidentified very-high-energy gamma-ray sources which appear to be point-like within experimental resolution. It is possibly associated with the massive Be star MWC 148 and has been suggested to resemble known TeV binary systems like LS I +61 303 or LS 5039. HESS J0632+057 was observed by VERITAS for 31 hours in 2006, 2008 and 2009. During these observations, no significant signal in gamma rays with energies above 1 TeV was detected from the direction of HESS J0632+057. A flux upper limit corresponding to 1.1% of the flux of the Crab Nebula has been derived from the VERITAS data. The non-detection by VERITAS excludes with a probability of 99.993% that HESS J0632+057 is a steady gamma-ray emitter. Contemporaneous X-ray observations with Swift XRT reveal a factor of 1.8+-0.4 higher flux in the 1-10 keV range than earlier X-ray observations of HESS J0632+057. 13. A temperature-stable optical link for the transmission of fast analogue signals

Abstract: A Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL)-based optical link has been developed for the transmission of nanosecond rise time signals. Uniquely the optical transmitter compensates for variations in the transmitted pulse area due to changes in the temperature of the VCSEL by automatically adjusting the bias current supplied to it. Our new design incorporates a higher performance VCSEL than was previously available, the ZL60052. The optical link exhibits good linearity (to within 12%) over a large dynamic range of 61 dB with an acceptable amount of pulse-shape and harmonic distortion across the entire bandwidth of ∼ 250 MHz , which is itself limited by the response of the receiver. The transmitter alone exhibits a significantly larger bandwidth of ∼ 470 MHz . Future work is required to increase the bandwidth and dynamic range for use with the next generation of photo detectors and digitisation electronics.

Abstract: VERITAS is an array of four, 12-m-diameter, Cherenkov telescopes, designed to explore the very-high-energy gamma-ray sky in the energy band between 100 GeV and 50 TeV. Its construction and commissioning have occurred over the past two years and the array has been taking scientific data with three or more telescopes since November 2006. We present results from observations made with VERITAS during the past observing season, including new results on the distant blazar 1ES 1218 + 304 , the active galaxy M87 and the high-mass X-ray binary system LS I + 61 303. We also describe the plans in place for the coming observing seasons.

Abstract: Details are presented of the Whipple Observatory’s 10 m atmospheric Cherenkov telescope and camera, as it evolved during the period 1997 until 2006. The design of the telescope and camera’s optical and electronic systems is discussed together with a detailed description of the four-stage GRANITE (Gamma-RAy New Imaging TElescope) upgrade program, undertaken during the same time period. The objective of the upgrade was to improve the telescope’s sensitivity for the detection of very-high-energy gamma-rays. Results from the program are provided and are briefly discussed in the context of the design of VERITAS.

Abstract: Gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations at very high energies (VHE, E > 100 GeV) can impose tight constraints on some GRB emission models. Many GRB afterglow models predict a VHE component similar to that seen in blazars and plerions, in which the GRB spectral energy distribution has a double-peaked shape extending into the VHE regime. VHE emission coincident with delayed X-ray flare emission has also been predicted. GRB follow-up observations have had high priority in the observing program at the Whipple 10m Gamma-ray Telescope and GRBs will continue to be high priority targets as the next generation observatory, VERITAS, comes on-line. Upper limits on the VHE emission, at late times (>~4 hours), from seven GRBs observed with the Whipple Telescope are reported here., Accepted for publication in the January 20, 2007 volume of the Astrophysical Journal, 655, 396

Abstract: Artículo escrito por muchos autores, sólo se referencian el primero, los autores que firman como Universidad Autónoma de Madrid y el grupo de colaboración en el caso de que aparezca en el artículo, Hyper-Kamiokande will be a next-generation underground water Cherenkov detector with a total (fiducial) mass of 0.99 (0.56) million metric tons, approximately 20 (25) times larger than that of Super-Kamiokande. One of the main goals of Hyper-Kamiokande is the study of CP asymmetry in the lepton sector using accelerator neutrino and anti-neutrino beams. In this paper, the physics potential of a long-baseline neutrino experiment using the Hyper- Kamiokande detector and a neutrino beam from the J-PARC proton synchrotron is presented. The analysis uses the framework and systematic uncertainties derived from the ongoing T2K experiment. With a total exposure of 7.5 MW ×107 s integrated proton beam power (corresponding to 1.56 × 1022 protons on target with a 30 GeV proton beam) to a 2.5° off-axis neutrino beam, it is expected that the leptonic CP phase δCP can be determined to better than 19 degrees for all possible values of δCP, and CP violation can be established with a statistical significance of more than 3 σ (5 σ) for 76% (58%) of the δCP parameter space. Abstract: The design and performance of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) detector is described as of March 2015 in this Conceptual Design Report. LZ is a second-generation dark-matter detector with the potential for unprecedented sensitivity to weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) of masses from a few GeV/c2 to hundreds of TeV/c2. With total liquid xenon mass of about 10 tonnes, LZ will be the most sensitive experiment for WIMPs in this mass region by the end of the decade. This report describes in detail the design of the LZ technical systems. Expected backgrounds are quantified and the performance of the experiment is presented. The LZ detector will be located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota. The organization of the LZ Project and a summary of the expected cost and current schedule are given.

Abstract: The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) being constructed in Southern Arizona consists of an array of four Atmospheric Cherenkov 12m Telescopes designed to observe astrophysical gamma rays in the energy range from 100 GeV to tens of TeV. A first telescope has been in operation on a temporary site since the end of 2004 and meets all specifications. The second is being installed on the same site, 85m from the first, in order to test stereoscopic capabilities. The full system of four telescopes is expected to be installed on the definitive site by the end of 2006.

Abstract: We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the TeV gamma-ray blazar Mrk 421 performed during 2002 December and 2003 January. These target of opportunity observations were initiated by the detection of X-ray and TeV gamma-ray flares with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the 10 m Whipple gamma-ray telescope. The campaign included observational coverage in the radio (University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory), optical (Boltwood, La Palma KVA 0.6 m; WIYN 0.9 m), X-ray (RXTE pointed telescopes), and TeV gamma-ray (Whipple and HEGRA) bands. At TeV energies, the observations revealed several flares at intermediate flux levels, peaking between 1 and 1.5 times the flux from the Crab Nebula. While the time-averaged spectrum can be fitted with a single power law of photon index Gamma = 2.8 from dN gamma/dE proportional to E-Gamma, we find some evidence for spectral variability. Confirming earlier results, the campaign reveals a rather loose correlation between the X-ray and TeV gamma-ray fluxes. In one case, a very strong X-ray flare is not accompanied by a comparable TeV gamma-ray flare. Although the source flux was variable in the optical and radio bands, the sparse sampling of the optical and radio light curves does not allow us to study the correlation properties in detail. We present a simple analysis of the data with a synchrotron self-Compton model, emphasizing that models with very high Doppler factors and low magnetic fields can describe the data.

Abstract: Background As part of a study on the effects of a fat-supplemented phenylalanine (phe)-free protein substitute on the fatty acid status of children with phenylketonuria (PKU), the adequacy of the diets of children aged 1–10 years for fat and essential fatty acids (EFA) was assessed. Methods Subjects randomized in a 1 : 1 ratio to a phe-free protein substitute supplemented with EFA (test-treatment group) or a phe-free, fat-free protein substitute (control group) for 20 weeks. 3-day semi-weighed records of food intakes collected at the end of the study period. Abstract: The Whipple Observatory 10 m γ-ray telescope has been used to survey the error boxes of EGRET unidentified sources in an attempt to find counterparts at energies of 350 GeV and above. Twenty-one unidentified sources detected by EGRET (more than 10% of the total number) have been included in this survey. In no case is a statistically significant signal found in the EGRET error box, which implies that, at least for this sample, the γ-ray spectra of these sources steepen between 100 MeV and 350 GeV. For each EGRET source location, we list candidate associations and derive upper limits on the integral γ-ray flux above 350 GeV.

Abstract: The blazar 1ES 1959+650 was observed in a flaring state with the Whipple 10 m Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope during May of 2002. A spectral analysis has been carried out on the data from that time period and the resulting very high energy gamma-ray spectrum ($E \geq 316$ GeV) can be well fit by a power-law of differential spectral index \alpha = 2.78 +/- 0.12_{stat.} +/- 0.21_{sys.}. On June 4th 2002, the source flared dramatically in the gamma-ray range without any coincident increase in the X-ray emission, providing the first unambiguous example of an `orphan' gamma-ray flare from a blazar. The gamma-ray spectrum for these data can also be described by a simple power-law fit with \alpha = 2.82 +/- 0.15_{stat.} +/- 0.30_{sys.}. Abstract: The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) is the major next generation imaging atmospheric Cherenkov γ-ray telescope in the western hemisphere and will be located in southern Arizona nearby Kitt Peak National Observatory. The VERITAS observatory will provide unprecedented sensitivity to photon energies between 50 GeV and 50 TeV. The first stage is an array of four telescopes to be fully operational in early 2006, with an expansion to seven telescopes envisioned for 2008. The construction of a prototype telescope is underway, for which first light is expected in Fall 2003. The technical concept is outlined and a progress report is given.

Abstract: The BL Lac object H1426+428 was recently detected as a high energy gamma-ray source by the VERITAS collaboration (Horan et al. 2002). We have reanalyzed the 2001 portion of the data used in the detection in order to examine the spectrum of H1426+428 above 250 GeV. We find that the time-averaged spectrum agrees with a power law of the shape dF/dE = 10^(-7.31 +- 0.15(stat) +- 0.16(syst)) x E^(-3.50 +- 0.35(stat) +- 0.05(syst)) m^(-2)s^(-1)TeV^(-1) The statistical evidence from our data for emission above 2.5 TeV is 2.6 sigma. With 95% c.l., the integral flux of H1426+428 above 2.5 TeV is larger than 3% of the corresponding flux from the Crab Nebula. The spectrum is consistent with the (non-contemporaneous) measurement by Aharonian et al. (2002) both in shape and in normalization. Below 800 GeV, the data clearly favours a spectrum steeper than that of any other TeV Blazar observed so far indicating a difference in the processes involved either at the source or in the intervening space., Comment: LaTeX, 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: For imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, which aim to detect electromagnetic air showers with cameras consisting of several hundred photomultiplier pixels, the single pixel trigger rate is dominated by fluctuations in night sky brightness and by ion feedback in the photomultipliers. Pattern recognition trigger electronics may be used to reject night sky background images, thus reducing the data rate to a manageable level. The trigger system described here detects patterns of 2, 3 or 4 adjacent pixel signals within a 331 pixel camera and gives a positive trigger decision in 65 ns . The candidate pixel pattern is compared with the contents of a pre-programmed memory. With the trigger decision timing controlled by a fixed delay the time-jitter inherent in the use of programmable gate arrays is avoided. This system is now in routine operation at the Whipple 10 m Telescope.

Abstract: We present optical, X-ray, high energy ($\lessapprox 30$ GeV) and very high energy ($\gtrapprox 100$ GeV; VHE) observations of the high-frequency peaked blazar Mrk 421 taken between 2008 May 24 and June 23. A high energy $\gamma$-ray signal was detected by AGILE with \sqrt{TS}=4.5 on June 9--15, with $F(E>100 \mathrm{MeV})= 42^{+14}_{-12}\times 10^{-8}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. This flaring state is brighter than the average flux observed by EGRET by a factor of $\sim$3, but still consistent with the highest EGRET flux. In hard X-rays (20-60 keV) SuperAGILE resolved a 5-day flare (June 9-15) peaking at $\sim$ 55 mCrab. SuperAGILE, RXTE/ASM and Swift/BAT data show a correlated flaring structure between soft and hard X-rays. Hints of the same flaring behavior are also detected in the simultaneous optical data provided by the GASP-WEBT. A Swift/XRT observation near the flaring maximum revealed the highest 2-10 keV flux ever observed from this source, of 2.6 $\times 10^{-9}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (i.e. > 100 mCrab). A peak synchrotron energy of $\sim$3 keV was derived, higher than typical values of $\sim$0.5-1 keV. VHE observations with MAGIC and VERITAS on June 6-8 show the flux peaking in a bright state, well correlated with the X-rays. This extraordinary set of simultaneous data, covering a twelve-decade spectral range, allowed for a deep analysis of the spectral energy distribution as well as of correlated light curves. The $\gamma$-ray flare can be interpreted within the framework of the synchrotron self-Compton model in terms of a rapid acceleration of leptons in the jet., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJL, 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

Abstract: [EN] The MOSCAB experiment (Materia OSCura A Bolle) uses the Geyser technique for dark matter search. The results of the first 0.5 kg mass prototype detector using superheated C3F8 liquid were very encouraging, achieving a 5 keV nuclear recoil threshold with high insensitivity to gamma radiation. Additionally, the technique seems to be easily scalable to higher masses for both in terms of complexity and costs, resulting in a very competitive technique for direct dark matter search, especially for the spin dependent case. Here, we report as well in the construction and commissioning of the big detector of 40 kg at the Milano-Bicocca University. The detector, the calibration tests and the evaluation of the background will be presented. Abstract: Exceptionally strong and long lasting flaring activity of the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) occurred between January and March 2001. Based on the excellent signal-to-noise ratio of the data we derive the energy spectrum between 260 GeV - 17 TeV with unprecedented statistical precision. The spectrum is not well described by a simple power law even with a curvature term. Instead the data can be described by a power law with exponential cutoff: $\rm {{dN}\over{dE}} \propto \rm E^{-2.14 \pm 0.03_{stat}} \times e^{-E/E_{0}} m^{-2} s^{-1} TeV^{-1}$ with $\rm E_{0} = 4.3 \pm 0.3_{stat} TeV$. Mrk 421 is the second $\gamma$-ray blazar that unambiguously exhibits an absorption-like feature in its spectral energy distribution at 3-6 TeV suggesting that this may be a universal phenomenon, possibly due to the extragalactic infra-red background radiation.

Abstract: Bleeding complications during renal replacement therapies can be attributed to coagulation system and platelet function alterations in uremia, and the application of heparin in extracorporeal circulation. Small protein losses during hemofiltration are always described, however the high molecular weight of coagulation factors should significantly prevent their removal during hemofiltration. To exclude degradation of coagulation factors under conditions of spontaneous ulrafiltration, the hemofiltrate of 40 patients with acute renal failure (treated with continuous veno-venous hemofiltration, CVVH) was sampled from the filtrate line after 1 h from the beginning of treatment and in 5 patients also after 12 and 24 h. Samples were investigated with human factor deficient plasma (VII, X, XI, XII) from donors with a congenital deficiency and with human plasma depleted of factor V, VIII, IX, and protein S and C. Factor XIII was detected photometrically. Subsequently the presence of factor- XIII and -VII activity was investigated in plasma and hemofiltrate from 16 patients treated with intermittent hemofiltration before (plasma) and after (plasma, hemofiltrate) therapy. Abstract: We have observed the cataclysmic variable AE Aqr for a total of 68.7 hours over the epoch 1991–1995 using the Whipple Observatory 10 m gamma-ray telescope. An analysis of these data has revealed no evidence for any steady, pulsed or episodic TeV emission. We have calculated an upper limit for steady emission of 4.0 × 10−12 photons cm−2s−1 at an energy threshold of 900 GeV. This is three orders of magnitude less than the flux reported by others during burst activity. Our upper limits coherent pulsed emission at the first and second harmonics of the white dwarf frequency are 1.5 × 10−12 photons cm−2s−1 in each case.

Abstract: The energy spectrum of the active galactic nucleus Markarian 501 has been determined from 0.3 to 10 TeV with the Whipple Observatory Cerenkov Imaging Telescope, by using both small zenith angle and large zenith angle data taken between 1997 February 14 and June 8. The TeV emission from Mrk 501 was unprecedentedly high, allowing a statistically accurate spectrum to be derived. In contrast to previously measured TeV spectra, the spectrum over this energy region is not well described by a simple power law. Instead, the spectrum exhibits significant curvature and can be well fitted by a parabolic spectrum proportional to E-2.22 ± 0.04 ± 0.05 - (0.47 ± 0.07) log10E, where the first set of errors is statistical and the second systematic and E is in units of TeV. Simple power-law fits to the TeV data are also inconsistent with upper limits from EGRET observations that temporally overlap a subset of the TeV observations. The data show a statistically significant signal above energies of 7 TeV. This energy, combined with variability timescales, yields a Doppler beaming factor, δ, of at least 1.5.

Abstract: Observations of photons at E ≥ 550 GeV from the Crab Nebula are presented and used to assess the potential of multi-telescope systems for γ-ray astronomy. The Whipple observatory 10 m and 8 m imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes have been used to provide a stereoscopic view of air showers to make a more complete measurement of air shower parameters. Here we present a measurement of the spread in the arrival direction of primary γ-rays originating from a point source. The data show that the shower arrival direction can be reconstructed with an accuracy of σ = 0.°14.

Abstract: Although atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes have restricted fields of view, their fluence sensitivity warrants a search for gamma-ray burst phenomena. A search for 400 GeV gamma-ray bursts on a 1 s time-scale using archival data taken between 1988 and 1992 with the Whipple Collaboration 10 m reflector is presented. No evidence of such bursts is found. Bursts of TeV gamma rays have been predicted from exotic astrophysical objects such as Primordial Black Holes and Cosmic Strings. An upper limit to the number density of exploding PBH of 3.0±1.0×10 6 pc −3 yr −1 is calculated.

Abstract: We report on observations of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 at E γ >300 GeV during the 1995 and 1996 seasons. A multiwavelength observing campaign on Mrk 421 in the period 1995 April 20 to May 5 indicates correlations in the γ-ray, X-ray, extreme ultraviolet, and optical wavelengths. Dramatic outbursts of TeV γ-rays were detected on two occasions in May of 1996 where the γ-ray flux reached the highest levels ever recorded (a factor of ∼20 greater than typical levels) with variability timescales ≲1hr. Together with the multiwavelength correlations these provide serious constraints on the Doppler factor ( δ ≳ 9.9), the size and location of the emission region ( R ≲ 10 −4 pc) and the mechanism responsible for the γ-ray emission.

Abstract: We present the gamma-ray spectrum of the BL Lacertae object, Markarian 421, above 500 GeV during its most intense recorded TeV flare, on 1996 May 7. The spectrum is well fitted by a power law with an exponent of 22.5650.0750.1 (statistical and systematic errors). The spectrum extends above 5 TeV with no evidence for a cutoff, favoring determinations of the extragalactic infrared energy density that do not produce a sharp cutoff at these energies.

Abstract: The removal of amino acids during continuous renal replacement therapies induces clinical problems. Previous studies on animals have shown nephroprotective (glycine, alanine) or negative effects (lysine) on renal function in occurrence of acute renal failure. Disturbed metabolism in acute renal failure needs adequate parenteral nutrition. On the other hand, experience with continuous renal replacement therapies of metabolic crises in inborn errors of metabolism indicate a good control of disturbed amino acid metabolism. The aim of our study was to find amino acids, that might play an important role in the pathogenesis, prognosis and detection of acute renal failure and severe illness, so far only estimated by lactic acid. Thirty-three probes (serum and hemofiltrate) were taken from patients, suffering with acute renal failure caused by septic shock, severe pancreatitis and hepatorenal syndrome, one hour after the beginning of extracorporal circulation, the conditions of treatment were standardized. The material was deproteinized and studied by the amino acid analyzer LBK 4251 Apha Plus (Pharmacia, Stockholm, Sweden), while the lactic acid concentration was determined in a standard laboratory. Proline, glycine, alanine, methionine and histidine showed a close relationship to the lactic acid levels, but these amino acids were an essential part of parenteral nutrition. A statistical relationship was also established in (amino acids with amide groups) asparagine, glutamine, citrulline, cystathionine and phosphoethanolamine. The mean values of most of the amino acids were higher than normal, but standard deviations were increased. The presence of these amino acids in hemofiltrate and the good sieving coefficients could mean that the better prognosis of critically ill patients in continuous renal replacement therapies may also be due to continuous control of amino acid levels (especially with amide groups).

Abstract: We present evidence for the first detection of gamma rays from the extragalactic object BL Lacertae. Observations taken with EGRET on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory between 1995 January 24 and 1995 February 14 indicate a 4.4 σ excess from the direction of BL Lacertae. The corresponding flux is (40 ± 12) × 10-8 photons cm-2 s-1 above 100 MeV. The combination of all previous observations where BL Lacertae was in EGRET's field of view result in a 2.4 σ excess and a corresponding 95% confidence upper limit of 14 × 10-8 photons cm-2 s-1, indicating that its gamma-ray emission is variable, at least on timescales of several months. Observations of BL Lacertae between 22 and 375 GHz were also taken between 1995 January 24 and 1995 February 14, and the flux levels for those measurements are similar to the historical average values for this object. A deep exposure on BL Lacertae with the Whipple Observatory 10 m gamma-ray telescope shows no evidence of emission above 350 GeV during a period 9 months after the EGRET observations. The 99.9% confidence flux upper limit derived from these observations is 0.53 × 10-11 photons cm-2 s-1, which implies a large reduction in the gamma-ray emission of BL Lacertae between EGRET and Whipple Observatory energies. This reduction should result from processes intrinsic to BL Lacertae because it is near enough to Earth that intergalactic background IR fields should not significantly reduce the flux of gamma rays to which the Whipple Observatory telescope is sensitive.

Abstract: Intense effort has gone into the observation of optical, radio, and X-ray gamma-ray burst (GRB) counterparts, either simultaneous to the burst or as quasi-steady lingering remnants. Here we report on a similar study at higher energies of 250 GeV and above using ground-based telescopes. The recent technical advances represented by the atmospheric Cherenkov imaging technique (Cawley & Weekes 1995) have opened up the field of gamma-ray astronomy above 250 GeV and raised the possibility that these techniques can be used with excellent fluence sensitivity in exploring the GRB phenomenon. Observations by the Whipple collaboration of nine BATSE positions, one acquired within 2 minutes of the reported BATSE burst time, using coordinates distributed through the BATSE Coordinates Distribution Network (BACODINE) are reported. No evidence of TeV emission is found, and upper limits to the high-energy delayed or extended emission of observed candidates are calculated.

Abstract: A hybrid version of the Whipple Observatory's atmospheric Cherenkov imaging camera that permits observation during periods of bright moonlight is described. The hybrid camera combines a blue-light blocking filter with the standard Whipple imaging camera to reduce sensitivity to wavelengths greater than 360 nm. Data taken with this camera are found to be free from the effects of the moonlit night-sky after the application of simple off-line noise filtering. This camera has been used to successfully detect TeV gamma rays, in bright moon light, from both the Crab Nebula and the active galactic nucleus Markarian 421 at the 4.9σ and 3.9σ levels of statistical significance, respectively. The energy threshold of the camera is estimated to be 1.1 ( +0.6 −0.3 ) TeV from Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract: We report the discovery of an unidentified, extended source of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission, VER J2019+407, within the radio shell of the supernova remnant SNR G78.2+2.1, using 21.4 hours of data taken by the VERITAS gamma-ray observatory in 2009. These data confirm the preliminary indications of gamma-ray emission previously seen in a two-year (2007-2009) blind survey of the Cygnus region by VERITAS. VER J2019+407, which is detected at a post-trials significance of 7.5 standard deviations in the 2009 data, is localized to the northwestern rim of the remnant in a region of enhanced radio and X-ray emission. It has an intrinsic extent of 0.23^{\circ} \pm 0.03^{\circ} (stat)+0.04^{\circ}_{-0.02}^{\circ}(sys) and its spectrum is well-characterized by a differential power law (dN/dE = N_0 \times (E/TeV)^{-\Gamma}) with a photon index of {\Gamma} = 2.37 \pm 0.14 (stat) \pm 0.20 (sys) and a flux normalization of N0 = 1.5 \pm 0.2 (stat) \pm 0.4(sys) \times 10^-12 ph TeV^{-1} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. This yields an integral flux of 5.2 \pm 0.8 (stat) \pm 1.4 (sys) \times 10^-12 ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} above 320 GeV, corresponding to 3.7% of the Crab Nebula flux. We consider the relationship of the TeV gamma-ray emission with the GeV gamma-ray emission seen from SNR G78.2+2.1 as well as that seen from a nearby cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays. Abstract: We report on the γ-ray variability of Mrk 421 at Eγ > 300 GeV during the 1995 season, and concentrate on the results of an intense multiwavelength observing campaign in the period April 20 to May 5, which included >100 MeV γ-ray, X-ray, extreme-ultraviolet, optical, and radio observations, some of which show evidence for correlated behavior. Rapid variations in the TeV γ-ray light curve with doubling and decay times of 1 day require a compact emission region and significant Doppler boosting. The TeV data reveal that the γ-ray emission is best characterized by a succession of rapid flares with a relatively low baseline level of steady emission.

Abstract: We report on very high energy (E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray observations of V407 Cygni, a symbiotic binary that underwent a nova outburst producing 0.1-10 GeV gamma rays during 2010 March 10-26. Observations were made with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System during 2010 March 19-26 at relatively large zenith angles, due to the position of V407 Cyg. An improved reconstruction technique for large zenith angle observations is presented and used to analyze the data. We do not detect V407 Cygni and place a differential upper limit on the flux at 1.6 TeV of 2.3 \times 10^(-12) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1) (at the 95% confidence level). When considered jointly with data from Fermi-LAT, this result places limits on the acceleration of very high energy particles in the nova., 17 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: We report on the discovery of high-energy (HE; E > 0.1 GeV) and very high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object RBS 0413. VERITAS, a ground-based gamma-ray observatory, detected VHE gamma rays from RBS 0413 with a statistical significance of 5.5 standard deviations (sigma) and a gamma-ray flux of (1.5 \pm 0.6stat \pm 0.7syst) \times 10^(-8) photons m^(-2) s^(-1) (\sim 1% of the Crab Nebula flux) above 250 GeV. The observed spectrum can be described by a power law with a photon index of 3.18 \pm 0.68stat \pm 0.30syst. Contemporaneous observations with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope detected HE gamma rays from RBS 0413 with a statistical significance of more than 9 sigma, a power-law photon index of 1.57 \pm 0.12stat +0.11sys -0.12sys and a gamma-ray flux between 300 MeV and 300 GeV of (1.64 \pm 0.43stat +0.31sys -0.22sys) \times 10^(-5) photons m^(-2) s^(-1). We present the results from Fermi-LAT and VERITAS, including a spectral energy distribution modeling of the gamma-ray, quasi-simultaneous X-ray (Swift-XRT), ultraviolet (Swift-UVOT) and R-band optical (MDM) data. Abstract: The VERITAS array of Cherenkov telescopes has carried out a deep observational program on the nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxy Segue 1. We report on the results of nearly 48 hours of good quality selected data, taken between January 2010 and May 2011. No significant $\gamma$-ray emission is detected at the nominal position of Segue 1, and upper limits on the integrated flux are derived. According to recent studies, Segue 1 is the most dark matter-dominated dwarf spheroidal galaxy currently known. We derive stringent bounds on various annihilating and decaying dark matter particle models. The upper limits on the velocity-weighted annihilation cross-section are $\mathrm{^{95% CL} \lesssim 10^{-23} cm^{3} s^{-1}}$, improving our limits from previous observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies by at least a factor of two for dark matter particle masses $\mathrm{m_{\chi}\gtrsim 300 GeV}$. The lower limits on the decay lifetime are at the level of $\mathrm{\tau^{95% CL} \gtrsim 10^{24} s}$. Finally, we address the interpretation of the cosmic ray lepton anomalies measured by ATIC and PAMELA in terms of dark matter annihilation, and show that the VERITAS observations of Segue 1 disfavor such a scenario., Comment: Added recently published erratum at the end of the original article

Abstract: VERITAS has been monitoring the very-high-energy (VHE; >100GeV) gamma-ray activity of the radio galaxy M87 since 2007. During 2008, flaring activity on a timescale of a few days was observed with a peak flux of (0.70 +- 0.16) X 10^{-11} cm^{-2} s^{-1} at energies above 350GeV. In 2010 April, VERITAS detected a flare from M87 with peak flux of (2.71 +- 0.68) X 10^{-11} cm^{-2} s^{-1} for E>350GeV. The source was observed for six consecutive nights during the flare, resulting in a total of 21 hr of good quality data. The most rapid flux variation occurred on the trailing edge of the flare with an exponential flux decay time of 0.90^{+0.22}_{-0.15} days. The shortest detected exponential rise time is three times as long, at 2.87^{+1.65}_{-0.99} days. The quality of the data sample is such that spectral analysis can be performed for three periods: rising flux, peak flux, and falling flux. The spectra obtained are consistent with power-law forms. The spectral index at the peak of the flare is equal to 2.19 +- 0.07. There is some indication that the spectrum is softer in the falling phase of the flare than the peak phase, with a confidence level corresponding to 3.6 standard deviations. We discuss the implications of these results for the acceleration and cooling rates of VHE electrons in M87 and the constraints they provide on the physical size of the emitting region., Accepted for publication in ApJ; 17 pages, 5 figures; Corresponding author: C.
