Abstract

We use the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey, the deepest degree-scale near-infrared survey to date, to investigate the clustering of star-forming and passive galaxies to z ~ 3.5. Our new measurements include the first determination of the clustering for passive galaxies at z > 2, which we achieve using a cross-correlation technique. We find that passive galaxies are the most strongly clustered, typically hosted by massive dark matter halos with M_halo > 5 x 10^12 M_sun irrespective of redshift or stellar mass. Our findings are consistent with models in which a critical halo mass determines the transition from star-forming to passive galaxies. Star-forming galaxies show no strong correlation between stellar mass and halo mass, but passive galaxies show evidence for an anti-correlation; low-mass passive galaxies appear, on average, to be located in the most massive halos. These results can be understood if the termination of star formation is most efficient for galaxies of low stellar mass in very dense environments., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 16 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

Abstract

We present spectroscopic confirmation of ten highly luminous (L >= 2L*) Lyman alpha emitters in the redshift range 6.01 = 6 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) selected from an area of 0.25 square degrees within the UKIDSS Ultra-deep Survey (UDS). Overall, our high rate of spectroscopic confirmation (>= 71%) and low rate of contamination provides a strong vindication of the photometric redshift analysis used to define the original sample. By considering star-formation rate estimates based on the Ly_alpha and UV continuum luminosity we conclude that our sample is consistent with a Ly_alpha escape fraction of ~25%. Moreover, after careful consideration of the potential uncertainties and biases, we find that 40%-50% of our sample of L >= 2L* galaxies at 6.0 = 25 Angs), a fraction which is a factor of ~2 higher than previously reported for L =2 L*) LBGs shows a similarly sharp increase to that observed in their lower-luminosity (L

Abstract

We investigate galactic-scale outflows in the redshift range 0.71 < z < 1.63, using 413 K-band selected galaxies observed in the spectroscopic follow-up of the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey (UDSz). The galaxies have an average stellar mass of ~10^9.5 solar masses and span a wide range in rest-frame colours, representing typical star-forming galaxies at this epoch. We stack the spectra by various galaxy properties, including stellar mass, [OII] equivalent width, star-formation rate, specific star-formation rate and rest-frame spectral indices. We find that outflows are present in virtually all spectral stacks, with velocities ranging from 100-1000 km s^-1, indicating that large-scale outflowing winds are a common property at these redshifts. The highest velocity outflows (>500 km s^-1) are found in galaxies with the highest stellar masses and the youngest stellar populations. Our findings suggest that high velocity galactic outflows are mostly driven by star-forming processes rather than AGN, with implied mass outflow rates comparable to the rates of star formation. Abstract

We report the results of a comprehensive study of the relationship between galaxy size, stellar mass and specific star-formation rate (sSFR) at redshifts 1.3= 6x10^10 Msun), spectroscopic sample from the UKIDSS Ultra-deep Survey (UDS), with accurate stellar-mass measurements derived from spectro photometric fitting, we find that at z~1.4 the location of massive galaxies on the size-mass plane is determined primarily by their sSFR. Abstract

We present new improved constraints on the Hubble parameter H(z) in the redshift range 0.15 < z < 1.1, obtained from the differential spectroscopic evolution of early-type galaxies as a function of redshift. We extract a large sample of early-type galaxies (\sim11000) from several spectroscopic surveys, spanning almost 8 billion years of cosmic lookback time (0.15 < z < 1.42). We select the most massive, red elliptical galaxies, passively evolving and without signature of ongoing star formation. Those galaxies can be used as standard cosmic chronometers, as firstly proposed by Jimenez & Loeb (2002), whose differential age evolution as a function of cosmic time directly probes H(z). We analyze the 4000 �� break (D4000) as a function of redshift, use stellar population synthesis models to theoretically calibrate the dependence of the differential age evolution on the differential D4000, and estimate the Hubble parameter taking into account both statistical and systematical errors. We provide 8 new measurements of H(z) (see Tab. 4), and determine its change in H(z) to a precision of 5-12% mapping homogeneously the redshift range up to z \sim 1.1; for the first time, we place a constraint on H(z) at z \neq 0 with a precision comparable with the one achieved for the Hubble constant (about 5-6% at z \sim 0.2), and covered a redshift range (0.5 < z < 0.8) which is crucial to distinguish many different quintessence cosmologies. These measurements have been tested to best match a ��CDM model, clearly providing a statistically robust indication that the Universe is undergoing an accelerated expansion. This method shows the potentiality to open a new avenue in constrain a variety of alternative cosmologies, especially when future surveys (e.g. Euclid) will open the possibility to extend it up to z \sim 2., 34 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, published in JCAP. 6. Frequency Analysis of Australian Rainfall Data as used for Flood Analysis and Design

Abstract

The procedures used to obtain accurate, temporally and spatially consistent, intensity-frequency-duration (IFD) design rainfall data for Australia are discussed. These IFD design curves are used by design enigneers and scientists as input to a wide range of design flood models and other environmental studies. The basic annual maximum rainfall data for durations of 6 minutes to 72 hours are fitted using a log-Pearson Type III distribution with a small Positive regional skewness up to 0.7. Most of Australia is close to zero skewness ie. a lognormal distribution. Due to the sparsity of recording raingauges, various regression techniques were used to estimate short duration data at daily read raingauge sites. These procedures are discussed, along with the production of six master charts of rainfall intensity for various durations and average recurrence intervals (ARI) covering all Australia. From these six charts,plus a map of regionalized skewness, a full set of IFD curves can be obtained for any location using appropriate extrapolation and interpolation procedures. The IFD design curves extend from six minutes to 72 hours and ARI from one year to 100 years. Comparisons are made with USA work in this field. The paper also outlines the steps taken to automate this development work and produce CDIRS(Computerized Design IFD Rainfall System). CDIRS allows automatic determination of a full set of IFD curves (also in tabular form) for any location simply by supplying its latitude and longitude.

7. Supraorbital photoplethysmographic monitoring during carotid endarterectomy with the use of an internal shunt: an added dimension of safety

Abstract

Photoplethysmograph (PPG) has added a new dimension of safety to carotid endarterectomy operations. Used to monitor adequate shunt blood flow during carotid endarterectomy, the PPG has proven to be a sensitive, reliable, and accurate device. Temporary intraoperative shunt occlusion is immediately indicated by marked amplitude reductions in the supraorbital artery pulse waveform. The cause of the occlusion is usually found to be impingment of the distal end of the shunt against the arterial wall, which is easily corrected by proximal positioning of the shunt. Also, occasionally occlusion will occur from kinking of the internal carotid artery distal to the shunt, which is corrected by slight proximal retraction on the artery. Repositioning retractors in the upper extent of the operative field will alleviate any occlusions from retractor pressure on the internal carotid artery. Without a method of sensing hemodynamically significant decreases in shunt flow during operation for carotid endarterectomy, there exists a risk of prolonged unrecognized intraoperative cerebral ischemia.
