We present a detailed study of the cosmic star formation history over $90$ per cent of cosmic time ($0\lesssim z\lesssim4$), using deep, radio continuum observations that probe star formation activity independent of dust. The Low Frequency Array Two Metre Sky Survey has imaged three well-studied extragalactic fields, Elais-N1, Bo\"otes and the Lockman Hole, reaching $\sim20\,\mu\rm{Jy/beam}$ rms sensitivity at $150\,\rm{MHz}$. The availability of high-quality ancillary data from ultraviolet to far-infrared wavelengths has enabled accurate photometric redshifts and the robust separation of radio-bright AGN from their star-forming counterparts. We capitalise on this unique combination of deep, wide fields and robustly-selected star-forming galaxies to construct radio luminosity functions and derive the cosmic star formation rate density. We carefully constrain and correct for scatter in the $L_{150\,\rm{MHz}}-\rm{SFR}$ relation, which we find to be $\sim0.3\,\rm{dex}$. Our derived star formation rate density lies between previous measurements at all redshifts studied. We derive higher star formation rate densities between $z\sim0$ and $z\sim3$ than are typically inferred from short wavelength emission; at earlier times, this discrepancy is reduced. We used the Rotation Measure (RM) catalogue derived from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2) at 144-MHz to measure the evolution with redshift of the extragalactic RM (RRM: Residual RM) and the polarization fraction ($p$) of sources in low density environments. We also measured the same at 1.4-GHz by cross-matching with the NRAO VLA Sky Survey RM catalogue. We find that RRM versus redshift is flat at 144-MHz, but, once redshift-corrected, it shows evolution at high significance. Also $p$ evolves with redshift with a decrement by a factor of $\sim$8 at $z\sim2$. Comparing the 144-MHz and 1.4-GHz data, we find that the observed RRM and $p$ are most likely to have an origin local to the source at 1.4-GHz, while a cosmic web filament origin is favoured at 144-MHz. If we attribute the entire signal to filaments, we infer a mean rest frame RRM per filament of RRM_{0,f} = 0.71 \pm 0.07 rad m^{-2} and a magnetic field per filament of B_f = 32 \pm 3 nG. This is in agreement with estimates obtained with a complementary method based on synchrotron emission stacking, and with cosmological simulations if primordial magnetic fields are amplified by astrophysical source field seeding. The measurement of an RRM_{0,f} supports the presence of diffuse baryonic gas in filaments. We also estimated a conservative upper limit of the filament magnetic turbulence of \sigma_{ RRM_{0,f}} =0.039 \pm 0.001 rad m^{-2}, concluding that the ordered magnetic field component dominates in filaments., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS

Source classifications, stellar masses and star formation rates are presented for 80,000 radio sources from the first data release of the Low Frequency Array Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) Deep Fields, which represents the widest deep radio survey ever undertaken. Using deep multi-wavelength data spanning from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared, spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting is carried out for all of the LoTSS-Deep host galaxies using four different SED codes, two of which include modelling of the contributions from an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Comparing the results of the four codes, galaxies that host a radiative AGN are identified, and an optimised consensus estimate of the stellar mass and star-formation rate for each galaxy is derived. Those galaxies with an excess of radio emission over that expected from star formation are then identified, and the LoTSS-Deep sources are divided into four classes: star-forming galaxies, radio-quiet AGN, and radio-loud high-excitation and low-excitation AGN. Ninety-five per cent of the sources can be reliably classified, of which more than two-thirds are star-forming galaxies, ranging from normal galaxies in the nearby Universe to highly-starbursting systems at z>4. Star-forming galaxies become the dominant population below 150-MHz flux densities of about 1 mJy, accounting for 90 per cent of sources at a 150-MHz flux density of 100 microJy. Radio-quiet AGN comprise around 10 per cent of the overall population. We present for the first time a study of peculiar giant radio galaxy (GRG) J223301+131502 using deep multi-frequency radio observations from GMRT (323, 612, and 1300 MHz) and LOFAR (144 MHz) along with optical spectroscopic observations with the WHT~4.2m optical telescope. Our observations have firmly established its redshift of 0.09956 and unveiled its exceptional jet structure extending more than $\sim$ 200 kpc leading to a peculiar kink structure of $\sim$ 100 kpc. We measure the overall size of this GRG to be $\sim$ 1.83 Mpc; it exhibits lobes without any prominent hotspots and closely resembles a barbell. Our deep low-frequency radio maps clearly reveal the steep-spectrum diffuse emission from the lobes of the GRG. The magnetic field strength of $\sim$ 5 $\mu$G and spectral ages between about 110 to 200 mega years for the radio lobes were estimated using radio data from LOFAR 144 MHz observations and GMRT 323 and 612 MHz observations. We discuss the possible causes leading to the formation of the observed kink feature for the GRG, which includes precession of the jet axis, development of instabilities and magnetic reconnection. Despite its enormous size, the Barbell GRG is found to be residing in a low-mass (M$_{200} \sim 10^{14}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$) galaxy cluster. Radio observations represent a powerful probe of the physics occurring in the intracluster medium (ICM) because they trace the relativistic cosmic rays in the cluster magnetic fields, or within galaxies themselves. By probing the low-energy cosmic rays, low-frequency radio observations are especially interesting because they unveil emission powered by low-efficiency particle acceleration processes, which are believed to play a crucial role in the origin of diffuse radio emission. We investigate the origin of the radio mini-halo at the center of the galaxy cluster 2A0335+096 and its connection to the central galaxy and the sloshing cool core. We also study the properties of the head-tail galaxy GB6 B0335+096 hosted in the cluster to explore the lifecycle of the relativistic electrons in its radio tails. We use new LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations from the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey at 144 MHz to map the low-frequency emission with a high level of detail. The new data were combined with archival Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and Chandra observations to carry out a multi-wavelength study. We have made the first measurement of the spectral index of the mini-halo ($\alpha=-1.2\pm0.1$ between 144 MHz and 1.4 GHz) and the lobes of the central source ($\alpha\simeq-1.5\pm0.1$ between 144 and 610 MHz). Based on the low-frequency radio emission morphology with respect to the thermal ICM, we propose that the origin of the diffuse radio emission is linked to the sloshing of the cool core. The new data revealed the presence of a Mpc-long radio tail associated with GB6 B0335+096. The observed projected length is a factor 3 longer than the expected cooling length, with evidence of flattening in the spectral index trend along the tail. Context. Hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HLIRGs) are among the most extreme systems in the Universe. With infrared (IR) luminosities of LIR > 1013 L⊙ they can have IR-derived star formation rates (SFRs) exceeding 103 M⊙ yr−1. Theoretical models have a hard time reproducing the observed number densities of such extreme star-forming systems. It is known that at least part of the population harbours active galactic nuclei (AGNs), but their prevalence and relative contribution to the IR output is still debated. Assessing this is further complicated by the heavy dust obscuration. Aims. We aim to investigate the HLIRG population in the Lockman Hole field to assess whether they are truly highly star-bursting systems or whether notable AGN activity is present. A substantial AGN population could help resolve the tension between the HLIRG number densities obtained from observations and predicted by galaxy formation models by lowering the amount of truly extremely star-forming galaxies. Methods. Starting from a highly complete Herschel-selected sample, we made use of recent wide-field sub-arcsecond 144 MHz International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) observations of the Lockman Hole field to probe AGN activity in HLIRGs in a dust-unobscured way. AGN presence was deduced through means of the brightness temperature (Tb). Brightness temperature measurements were made to determine the fraction of HLIRGs harbouring a radio AGN. This identification was then compared to the classification based on spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting based identification from the LOFAR Deep Fields project, the radio-excess q and IRAC infrared colours. Results. We detect 33% of previously identified HLIRGs at sub-arcsecond resolution. All but one of the detected sources is found to exceed the Tb threshold for pure star formation, showing 98% of detections to contain a radio AGN, even though lower-resolution observations had classified them as star-forming galaxies (SFGs). The remaining source is concluded to be consistent with having no AGN activity. All of the sources in our sample that were previously classified as radio AGNs, radio-quiet AGNs or those that were unclassified were detected as high-Tb objects (16% of the total sample or 47% of the detected sub-arcsecond detections). In addition, we identify AGNs through Tb measurements in 20% of sources that were classified as SFGs through SED fitting, raising the overall fraction of AGNs in the total sample from 16% to 32%. AGNs identified through brightness temperature measurements are also found to be more likely to be mid-IR AGNs. Conclusions. 98% of our detected sources are found to likely host radio-AGNs, raising the number of identified AGNs among the HLIRG population in this field from 16% to 32%. This increased number of AGNs is not sufficient to bring observations and predictions of HLIRG number densities in agreement, however. Even at cosmic noon around z ∼ 2, where the tension is lowest, it remains at a factor of just a few. The identification of radio AGNs in supposed SFGs highlights the value of high-resolution radio observations in studying dusty objects such as HLIRGs. Broad consistency is seen between Tb and the other AGN indicators, and the observed relation between SFR and Tb is seen as indicative of co-evolution between stellar mass build-up and black hole growth.

Relatively little information is available about the Universe at ultra-low radio frequencies (ULF; i.e., below 50 MHz), although the ULF spectral window contains a wealth of unique diagnostics for studying galactic and extragalactic phenomena. Subarcsecond resolution imaging at these frequencies is extremely difficult, due to the long baselines (>1000 km) required and large ionospheric perturbations. We have conducted a pilot project to investigate the ULF performance and potential of the International LOFAR Telescope (ILT), a trans-European interferometric array with baselines up to ~2000 km and observing frequencies down to 10 MHz. We have successfully produced images with subarcsecond resolution for six radio sources at frequencies down to 30 MHz. This resolution is more than an order of magnitude better than pre-ILT observations at similar frequencies. The six targets that we imaged (3C 196, 3C 225, 3C 273, 3C 295, 3C 298, and 3C 380) are bright radio sources with compact structures. By comparing our data of 3C 196 and 3C 273 with observations at higher frequencies, we investigate their spatially resolved radio spectral properties. Our success shows that at frequencies down to 30 MHz, subarcsecond imaging with the ILT is possible. High quality low-frequency radio surveys have the promise of advancing our understanding of many important topics in astrophysics, including the life cycle of active galactic nuclei (AGN), particle acceleration processes in jets, the history of star formation, and exoplanet magnetospheres. Currently leading low-frequency surveys reach an angular resolution of a few arcseconds. However, this resolution is not yet sufficient to study the more compact and distant sources in detail. Sub-arcsecond resolution is therefore the next milestone in advancing these fields. The biggest challenge at low radio frequencies is the ionosphere. If not adequately corrected for, ionospheric seeing blurs the images to arcsecond or even arcminute scales. Additionally, the required image size to map the degree-scale field of view of low-frequency radio telescopes at this resolution is far greater than what typical soft- and hardware is currently capable of handling. Here we present for the first time (to the best of our knowledge) widefield sub-arcsecond imaging at low radio frequencies. We derive ionospheric corrections in a few dozen individual directions and apply those during imaging efficiently using a recently developed imaging algorithm (arXiv:1407.1943, arXiv:1909.07226). We demonstrate our method by applying it to an eight hour observation of the International LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Telescope (ILT) (arXiv:1305.3550). Doing so we have made a sensitive $7.4\ \mathrm{deg}^2$ $144\ \mathrm{MHz}$ map at a resolution of $0.3''$ reaching $25\ \mu\mathrm{Jy\ beam}^{-1}$ near the phase centre. The estimated $250,000$ core hours used to produce this image, fit comfortably in the budget of available computing facilities. Radio-loud active galaxies have two accretion modes [radiatively inefficient (RI) and radiatively efficient (RE)], with distinct optical and infrared signatures, and two jet dynamical behaviours, which in arcsec- to arcmin-resolution radio surveys manifest primarily as centre- or edge-brightened structures [Fanaroff-Riley (FR) class I and II]. The nature of the relationship between accretion mode and radio morphology (FR class) has been the subject of long debate. We present a comprehensive investigation of this relationship for a sample of 286 well-resolved radio galaxies in the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Deep Fields (LoTSS-Deep) first data release, for which robust morphological and accretion mode classifications have been made. We find that two-thirds of luminous FRII radio galaxies are RI, and identify no significant differences in the visual appearance or source dynamic range (peak/mean surface brightness) of the RI and RE FRIIs, demonstrating that both RI and RE systems can produce FRII structures. We also find a significant population of low-luminosity FRIIs (predominantly RI), supporting our earlier conclusion that FRII radio structures can be produced at all radio luminosities. We demonstrate that in the luminosity range where both morphologies are present, the probability of producing FRI or FRII radio morphology is directly linked to stellar mass, while across all morphologies and luminosities, RE accretion occurs in systems with high specific star formation rate, presumably because this traces fuel availability. In summary, the relationship between accretion mode and radio morphology is very indirect, with host-galaxy environment controlling these two key parameters in different ways., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, 7 tables. The central regions of galaxy clusters are permeated by magnetic fields and filled with relativistic electrons. When clusters merge, the magnetic fields are amplified and relativistic electrons are re-accelerated by turbulence in the intra cluster medium. These electrons reach energies of 1 -- 10 GeV and, in the presence of magnetic fields, produce diffuse radio halos that typically cover an area of ~1 square Mpc. Here we report observations of four clusters whose radio halos are embedded in much more extended, diffuse radio emission, filling a volume 30 times larger than that of radio halos. The emissivity in these larger features is about 20 times lower than the emissivity in radio halos. We conclude that relativistic electrons and magnetic fields extend far beyond radio halos, and that the physical conditions in the outer regions of the clusters are quite different from those in the radio halos., 21 pages, 8 figures, Nature in press

We present wideband (1 − 6.5 GHz) polarimetric observations, obtained with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, of the merging galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745, which hosts one of the most complex known radio relic and halo systems. We used both rotation measure synthesis and QU-fitting to find a reasonable agreement of the results obtained with these methods, particularly when the Faraday distribution is simple and the depolarization is mild. The relic is highly polarized over its entire length (850 kpc), reaching a fractional polarization > 30% in some regions. We also observe a strong wavelength-dependent depolarization for some regions of the relic. The northern part of the relic shows a complex Faraday distribution, suggesting that this region is located in or behind the intracluster medium (ICM). Conversely, the southern part of the relic shows a rotation measure very close to the Galactic foreground, with a rather low Faraday dispersion, indicating very little magnetoionic material intervening along the line of sight. Based on a spatially resolved polarization analysis, we find that the scatter of Faraday depths is correlated with the depolarization, indicating that the tangled magnetic field in the ICM causes the depolarization. We conclude that the ICM magnetic field could be highly turbulent. At the position of a well known narrow-angle-tailed galaxy (NAT), we find evidence of two components that are clearly separated in the Faraday space. The high Faraday dispersion component seems to be associated with the NAT, suggesting the NAT is embedded in the ICM while the southern part of the relic lies in front of it. If true, this implies that the relic and this radio galaxy are not necessarily physically connected and, thus, the relic may, in fact, not be powered by the shock re-acceleration of fossil electrons from the NAT. The magnetic field orientation follows the relic structure indicating a well-ordered magnetic field. We also detected polarized emission in the halo region; however, the absence of significant Faraday rotation and a low value of Faraday dispersion suggests the polarized emission that was previously considered as the part of the halo does, in fact, originate from the shock(s).

Extended radio sources are an important minority population in modern deep radio surveys, because they enable detailed investigation of the physics governing radio-emitting regions such as active galaxies and their environments. Cross-identification of radio sources with optical host galaxies is challenging for this extended population, due to their morphological complexity and multiple potential counterparts. In the first data release of the Low-frequency array (LOFAR) Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS DR1) the automated likelihood ratio for compact sources was supplemented by a citizen science visual identification process for extended sources. In this paper we present a novel method for automating the host identification of extended sources by using ridgelines, which trace the assumed direction of fluid-flow through the points of highest flux density. Applying a new code, RL-Xid, to LoTSS DR1, we demonstrate that ridgelines are versatile; by providing information about spatial structure and brightness distributions, they can be used both for optical host identification and morphological studies in radio surveys. RL-Xid draws ridgelines for 85 per cent of sources brighter than 10 mJy and larger than 15 arcsec, with an improved performance of 96 per cent for the subset >30 mJy and >60 arcsec. Using a sample of sources with known hosts from LoTSS DR1, we demonstrate that RL-Xid successfully identifies the host for 98 per cent of the sources with successfully drawn ridgelines, and performs at a comparable level to visual identification via citizen science. The effect of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) on their host galaxies -- in particular their levels of star formation -- remains one of the key outstanding questions of galaxy evolution. Successful cosmological models of galaxy evolution require a fraction of energy released by an AGN to be redistributed into the interstellar medium to reproduce the observed stellar mass and luminosity function and to prevent the formation of over-massive galaxies. Observations have confirmed that the radio-AGN population is energetically capable of heating and redistributing gas at all phases, however, direct evidence of AGN enhancing or quenching star formation remains rare. With modern, deep radio surveys and large integral field spectroscopy (IFS) surveys, we can detect fainter synchrotron emission from AGN jets and accurately probe the star-forming properties of galaxies, respectively. We present the X-ray imaging and spectral analysis of the diffuse emission around the Spiderweb galaxy at z=2.16 and of its nuclear emission, based on a deep (700 ks) Chandra observation. We characterize the nuclear emission and computed the contamination in the surrounding regions due to the wings of the instrument PSF. Then, we quantified the extended emission within 12". We find that the Spiderweb galaxy hosts a mildly absorbed quasar, with modest yet significant variability on a timescale of ~1 year. We find that the emission in the jet regions is well described by a power law with Gamma~2-2.5, and it is consistent with IC upscattering of the CMB photons by the relativistic electrons. We also find a roughly symmetric, diffuse emission within a radius of ~100 kpc. This emission is consistent with thermal bremsstrahlung from a hot ICM with a temperature of kT=2.0_{-0.4}^{+0.7} keV, and a metallicity of Z, 19 pages, 16 figures, accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Context.The presence of large-scale magnetic fields and ultra-relativistic electrons in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) is confirmed through the detection of diffuse radio synchrotron sources, so-called radio halos and relics. Due to their steep-spectrum nature, these sources are rarely detected at frequencies above a few gigahertz, especially in low-mass systems.Aims.The aim of this study is to discover and characterise diffuse radio sources in low-mass galaxy clusters in order to understand their origin and their scaling with host cluster properties.Methods.We searched for cluster-scale radio emission from low-mass galaxy clusters in the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) Two-metre Sky Survey – Data Release 2 (LoTSS-DR2) fields. We made use of existing optical (Abell, DESI, WHL) and X-ray (comPRASS, MCXC) catalogues. The LoTSS-DR2 data were processed further to improve the quality of the images that are used to detect and characterise diffuse sources.Results.We detect diffuse radio emission in 28 galaxy clusters. The numbers of confirmed (candidates) halos and relics are six (seven) and 10 (three), respectively. Among these, 11 halos and 10 relics, including candidates, are newly discovered by LOFAR. In addition to these, five diffuse sources are detected in tailed radio galaxies and are probably associated with mergers during the formation of the host clusters. We are unable to classify a further 13 diffuse sources. We compare our newly detected, diffuse sources to known sources by placing them on the scaling relation between the radio power and the mass of the host clusters.

Context. Diffuse synchrotron emission pervades numerous galaxy clusters, indicating the existence of cosmic rays and magnetic fields throughout the intra-cluster medium. The general consensus is that this emission is generated by shocks and turbulence that are activated during cluster merger events and cause a (re-)acceleration of particles to highly relativistic energies. Similar emission has recently been detected in megaparsec-scale filaments connecting pairs of premerging clusters. These instances are the first in which diffuse emission has been found outside of the main cluster regions. Aims. We aim to examine the particle acceleration mechanism in the megaparsec-scale bridge between Abell 399 and Abell 401 and assess in particular whether the synchrotron emission originates from first- or second-order Fermi reacceleration. We also consider the possible influence of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Methods. To examine the diffuse emission and the AGNs in Abell 399 and Abell 401, we used deep (∼40 h) LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations with an improved direction-dependent calibration to produce radio images at 144 MHz with a sensitivity of σ = 79 μJy beam−1 at a 5.9″ × 10.5″ resolution. Using a point-to-point analysis, we searched for a correlation between the radio and X-ray brightness from which we would be able to constrain the particle reacceleration mechanism. Results. Our radio images show the radio bridge between the radio halos at high significance. We find a trend between the radio and X-ray emission in the bridge. We also measured the correlation between the radio and X-ray emission in the radio halos and find a strong correlation for Abell 401 and a weaker correlation for Abell 399. On the other hand, we measure a strong correlation for the radio halo extension from A399 in the northwest direction. With our deep images, we also find evidence for AGN particle injection and reenergized fossil plasma in the radio bridge and halos. Conclusions. We argue that second-order Fermi reacceleration is currently the most favored process to explain the radio bridge. In addition, we find indications for a scenario in which past AGN particle injection might introduce significant scatter in the relation between the radio and X-ray emission in the bridge, but may also supply the fossil plasma needed for in situ reacceleration. The results for Abell 401 are also clearly consistent with a second-order Fermi reacceleration model. The relation between the thermal and nonthermal components in the radio halo in Abell 399 is affected by a recent merger. However, a strong correlation toward its northwest extension and the steep spectrum in the radio halo support an origin of the radio emission in a second-order Fermi reacceleration model as well. The evidence that we find for reenergized fossil plasma near Abell 399 and in the radio bridge supports the reacceleration of the fossil plasma scenario.

Ionized gas probes the influence of massive stars on their environment. The Cygnus X region (d~1.5 kpc) is one of the most massive star forming complexes in our Galaxy, in which the Cyg OB2 association (age of 3-5 Myr and stellar mass $2 \times 10^{4}$ M$_{\odot}$) has a dominant influence. We observe the Cygnus X region at 148 MHz using the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) and take into account short-spacing information during image deconvolution. Together with data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, we investigate the morphology, distribution, and physical conditions of low-density ionized gas in a $4^{\circ} \times 4^{\circ}$ (100 pc $\times$ 100 pc) region at a resolution of 2' (0.9 pc). The Galactic radio emission in the region analyzed is almost entirely thermal (free-free) at 148 MHz, with emission measures of $10^3 < EM~{\rm[pc~cm^{-6}]} < 10^6$. As filamentary structure is a prominent feature of the emission, we use DisPerSE and FilChap to identify filamentary ridges and characterize their radial ($EM$) profiles. The distribution of radial profiles has a characteristic width of 4.3 pc and a power-law distribution ($β= -1.8 \pm 0.1$) in peak $EM$ down to our completeness limit of 4200 pc cm$^{-6}$. The electron densities of the filamentary structure range from $10 < n_e~{\rm[cm^{-3}]} < 400$ with a median value of 35 cm$^{-3}$, remarkably similar to [N II] surveys of ionized gas. Cyg OB2 may ionize at most two-thirds of the total ionized gas and the ionized gas in filaments. More than half of the filamentary structures are likely photoevaporating surfaces flowing into a surrounding diffuse (~5 cm$^{-3}$) medium. However, this is likely not the case for all ionized gas ridges. A characteristic width in the distribution of ionized gas points to the stellar winds of Cyg OB2 creating a fraction of the ionized filaments through swept-up ionized gas or dissipated turbulence., 19 pages, 14 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in A&A

Previous studies have shown that physically small, low-luminosity radio galaxies, which we refer to as galaxy scale jets (GSJ), could potentially have a significant effect upon the host galaxy's evolution. Using 6 arcsec resolution images taken from the first release of the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS DR1), we identified a representative sample of nine potential GSJ for which we obtained high-resolution, 2-4 GHz data using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). Using these data we aim to verify the GSJ nature of these sources as well as investigating the potential role of feedback. Our VLA images reveal a diversity of structures, confirm the hosts for four of the sources and find that a fifth is the first known example of a galaxy-scale remnant showing that some radio galaxies never grow beyond the GSJ stage. We also derive spectral ages and the first estimates of the lobe expansion speeds of GSJ. We find our GSJ have maximum spectral ages of 60 Myr with most between about 5 and 20 Myr, consistent with being located along an evolutionary path joining compact sources and larger radio galaxies. We find lobe advance speeds a few times the local sound speed, with most GSJ predicted to be driving strong shocks into their environment and having a significant impact upon the host's evolution. We examine the distribution of radio emission from ~42,000 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, as measured in the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). We present a model of the radio luminosity distribution of the quasars that assumes that every quasar displays a superposition of two sources of radio emission: active galactic nuclei (jets) and star-formation. Our two-component model provides an excellent match to the observed radio flux density distributions across a wide range of redshifts and quasar optical luminosities; this suggests that the jet-launching mechanism operates in all quasars but with different powering efficiency. The wide distribution of jet powers allows for a smooth transition between the 'radio-quiet' and 'radio-loud' quasar regimes, without need for any explicit bimodality. The best-fit model parameters indicate that the star-formation rate of quasar host galaxies correlates strongly with quasar luminosity and also increases with redshift at least out to z~2. For a model where star-formation rate scales as $SFR \propto L_{bol}^\alpha (1+z)^\beta$, we find $\alpha = 0.47 \pm 0.01$ and $\beta = 1.61 \pm 0.05$, in agreement with far-infrared studies. Quasars contribute ~0.15 per cent of the cosmic star-formation rate density at z=0.5, rising to 0.4 per cent by z=2. The typical radio jet power is seen to increase with both increasing optical luminosity and black hole mass independently, but does not vary with redshift, suggesting intrinsic properties govern the production of the radio jets. Coherent radio emission from stars can be used to constrain fundamental coronal plasma parameters, such as plasma density and magnetic field strength. It is also a probe of chromospheric and magnetospheric acceleration mechanisms. Close stellar binaries, such as RS Canum Venaticorum (RS CVn) systems, are particularly interesting as their heightened level of chromospheric activity and possible direct magnetic interaction make them a unique laboratory to study coronal and magnetospheric acceleration mechanisms. RS CVn binaries are known to be radio-bright but coherent radio emission has only conclusively been detected previously in one system. Here, we present a population of 14 coherent radio emitting RS CVn systems. We identified the population in the ongoing LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey as circularly polarised sources at 144MHz that are astrometrically associated with known RS CVn binaries. We show that the observed emission is powered by the electron cyclotron maser instability. We use numerical calculations of the maser's beaming geometry to argue that the commonly invoked 'loss-cone' maser cannot generate the necessary brightness temperature in some of our detections and that a more efficient instability, such as the shell or horseshoe maser, must be invoked. Such maser configurations are known to operate in planetary magnetospheres. We also outline two acceleration mechanisms that could produce coherent radio emission, one where the acceleration occurs in the chromosphere and one where the acceleration is due to an electrodynamic interaction between the stars. Recently detected coherent low-frequency radio emission from M dwarf systems shares phenomenological similarities with emission produced by magnetospheric processes from the gas giant planets of our Solar System. Such beamed electron-cyclotron maser emission can be driven by a star-planet interaction or a breakdown in co-rotation between a rotating plasma disk and a stellar magnetosphere. Both models suggest that the radio emission could be periodic. Here we present the longest low-frequency interferometric monitoring campaign of an M dwarf system, composed of twenty-one $\approx$8 hour epochs taken in two series of observing blocks separated by a year. We achieved a total on-source time of 6.5 days. We show that the M dwarf binary CR Draconis has a low-frequency 3$\sigma$ detection rate of 90$^{+5}_{-8}$% when a noise floor of $\approx$0.1 mJy is reached, with a median flux density of 0.92 mJy, consistent circularly polarised handedness, and a median circularly polarised fraction of 66%. We resolve three bright radio bursts in dynamic spectra, revealing the brightest is elliptically polarised, confined to 4 MHz of bandwidth centred on 170 MHz, and reaches a flux density of 205 mJy. The burst structure is mottled, indicating it consists of unresolved sub-bursts. Such a structure shares a striking resemblance with the low-frequency emission from Jupiter. We suggest the near-constant detection of high brightness temperature, highly-circularly-polarised radiation that has a consistent circular polarisation handedness implies the emission is produced via the electron-cyclotron maser instability. Optical photometric data reveal the system has a rotation period of 1.984$\pm$0.003 days. Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) offer valuable probes of early galaxy evolution and the process of reionization; however, the exact evolution of their abundance and the nature of their emission remain open questions. We combine samples of 229 and 349 LAE candidates at $z=5.7$ and $z=6.6,$ respectively, from the SILVERRUSH narrowband survey with deep Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) radio continuum observations in the ELAIS-N1 field to search for radio galaxies in the EoR and study the low-frequency radio properties of $z\gtrsim5.7$ LAE emitters. Our LOFAR observations reach an unprecedented noise level of $\sim20\,\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ at 150MHz, and we detect five candidate LAEs at $>5\sigma$ significance. Based on detailed spectral energy distribution modelling of independent multi-wavelength observations, we conclude that these sources are likely [OII] emitters at $z=1.47$, yielding no reliable $z\gtrsim5.7$ radio galaxy candidates. We examine the 111 $z=5.7$ and $z=6.6$ LAE candidates from our panchromatic photometry catalogue that are undetected by LOFAR, finding contamination rates of 81-92% for the $z=5.7$ and $z=6.6$ subset of the LAE candidate samples. This subset is biased towards brighter magnitudes and redder near-infrared colours. The contamination rates of the full sample will therefore likely be lower than the reported values. Contamination is lowered significantly through constraints on the near-infrared colours, highlighting the need for infrared observations to robustly identify bright LAEs in narrowband surveys. Finally, the stacking of radio continuum observations for the robust LAE samples yields 2$\sigma$ upper limits on radio luminosity of 8.2$\times$10$^{23}$ and 8.7$\times$10$^{23}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ at $z=5.7$ and $6.6$, respectively, corresponding to limits on their median star-formation rates of $, Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) is a sensitive, high-resolution 120-168 MHz survey split across multiple tiers over the northern sky. The first LoTSS Deep Fields data release consists of deep radio continuum imaging at 150 MHz of the Bo��tes, European Large Area Infrared Space Observatory Survey-North 1 (ELAIS-N1), and Lockman Hole fields, down to rms sensitivities of $\sim$32, 20, and 22 $��$Jy beam$^{-1}$, respectively. In this paper we present consistent photometric redshift (photo-$z$) estimates for the optical source catalogues in all three fields - totalling over 7 million sources ($\sim5$ million after limiting to regions with the best photometric coverage). Our photo-$z$ estimation uses a hybrid methodology that combines template fitting and machine learning and is optimised to produce the best possible performance for the radio continuum selected sources and the wider optical source population. Comparing our results with spectroscopic redshift samples, we find a robust scatter ranging from 1.6 to 2% for galaxies and 6.4 to 7% for identified optical, infrared, or X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our estimated outlier fractions ($\left | z_{\text{phot}} - z_{\text{spec}} \right | / (1+z_{\text{spec}}) > 0.15$) for the corresponding subsets range from 1.5 to 1.8% and 18 to 22%, respectively. Replicating trends seen in analyses of previous wide-area radio surveys, we find no strong trend in photo-$z$ quality as a function of radio luminosity for a fixed redshift. We exploit the broad wavelength coverage available within each field to produce galaxy stellar mass estimates for all optical sources at $z < 1.5$. Stellar mass functions derived for each field are used to validate our mass estimates, with the resulting estimates in good agreement between each field and with published results from the literature., 23 pages, 14 figures. We present the analysis of X-ray and optical observations of gas filaments observed in the radio source 3CR 318.1, associated with NGC 5920, the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) of MKW 3s, a nearby cool core galaxy cluster. This work is one of the first X-ray and optical analyses of filaments in cool core clusters carried out using MUSE observations. We aim at identifying the main excitation processes responsible for the emission arising from these filaments. We complemented the optical VLT/MUSE observations, tracing the colder gas phase, with X-ray $\textit{Chandra}$ observations of the hotter highly ionized gas phase. Using the MUSE observations, we studied the emission line intensity ratios along the filaments to constrain the physical processes driving the excitation, and, using the $\textit{Chandra}$ observations, we carried out a spectral analysis of the gas along these filaments. We found a spatial association between the X-ray and optical morphology of these filaments, which are colder and have lower metal abundance than the surrounding intra-cluster medium (ICM), as already seen in other BCGs. Comparing with previous results from the literature for other BCGs, we propose that the excitation process that is most likely responsible for these filaments emission is a combination of star formation and shocks, with a likely contribution from self-ionizing, cooling ICM. Giant radio galaxies (GRGs), with extended structures reaching hundreds of kpc, are among the most spectacular examples of ejection of relativistic plasma from super-massive black holes. In this work, third of a series, we present LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) images at 144 MHz, collected in the framework of the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2), for nine sources extracted from our sample of hard X-ray selected GRGs (HXGRG, i.e. from INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT catalogues at >20 keV). Thanks to the resolution and sensitivity of LoTSS, we could probe the complex morphology of these GRGs, unveiling cases with diffuse (Mpc-scale) remnant emission, presence of faint off-axis wings, or a misaligned inner jet. In particular, for one source (B21144+35B), we could clearly detect a $\sim$300 kpc wide off-axis emission, in addition to an inner jet which orientation is not aligned with the lobes axis. For another source (J1153.9+5848) a structure consistent with jet precession was revealed, appearing as an X-shaped morphology with relic lobes having an extension larger than the present ones, and with a different axis orientation. From an environment analysis, we found 2 sources showing an overdensity of cosmological neighbours, and a correspondent association with a galaxy cluster from catalogues. Finally, a comparison with radio-selected GRGs from LoTSS DR1 suggested that, on average, HXGRG can grow to larger extents. These results highlight the importance of deep low-frequency observations to probe the evolution of radio galaxies, and ultimately estimate the duty cycle of their jets., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have exploited LOFAR deep observations of the Lockman Hole field at 150 MHz to investigate the relation between the radio luminosity of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and their star formation rates (SFRs), as well as its dependence on stellar mass and redshift. The adopted source classification, SFRs and stellar masses are consensus estimates based on a combination of four different SED fitting methods. We note a flattening of radio spectra of a substantial minority of sources below $\sim 1.4 $ GHz. Such sources have thus a lower "radio-loudness" level at 150 MHz than expected from extrapolations from 1.4 GHz using the average spectral index. We found a weak trend towards a lower $\hbox{SFR}/L_{150 \rm MHz}$ ratio for higher stellar mass, $M_\star$. We argue that such a trend may account for most of the apparent redshift evolution of the $L_{150 \rm MHz}/\hbox{SFR}$ ratio, in line with previous work. Our data indicate a weaker evolution than found by some previous analyses. We also find a weaker evolution with redshift of the specific star formation rate than found by several (but not all) previous studies. Our radio selection provides a view of the distribution of galaxies in the $\hbox{SFR}$-$M_\star$ plane complementary to that of optical/near-IR selection. It suggests a higher uniformity of the star formation history of galaxies than implied by some analyses of optical/near-IR data. We have derived luminosity functions at 150 MHz of both SFGs and radio-quiet (RQ) AGN at various redshifts. Our results are in very good agreement with the T-RECS simulations and with literature estimates. We investigate the radio properties of a sample of 53 sources selected at 850 $��$m from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey using new deep, low-frequency radio imaging of the Lockman Hole field from the Low Frequency Array. Combining these data with additional radio observations from the GMRT and the JVLA, we find a variety of radio spectral shapes and luminosities within our sample despite their similarly bright submillimetre flux densities. We characterise their spectral shapes in terms of multi-band radio spectral indices. Finding strong spectral flattening at low frequencies in ~20% of sources, we investigate the differences between sources with extremely flat low-frequency spectra and those with `normal' radio spectral indices. As there are no other statistically significant differences between the two subgroups of our sample as split by the radio spectral index, we suggest that any differences are undetectable in galaxy-averaged properties that we can observe with our unresolved images, and likely relate to galaxy properties that we cannot resolve, on scales $\lesssim$ 1 kpc. We attribute the observed spectral flattening in the radio to free-free absorption, proposing that those sources with significant low-frequency spectral flattening have a clumpy distribution of star-forming gas. We estimate an average spatial extent of absorbing material of at most several hundred parsecs to produce the levels of absorption observed in the radio spectra. This estimate is consistent with the highest-resolution observations of submillimetre galaxies in the literature, which find examples of non-uniform dust distributions on scales of ~100 pc, with evidence for clumps and knots in the interstellar medium. Additionally, we find two bright (> 6 mJy) submm sources undetected at all other wavelengths. Supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies can cycle through periods of activity and quiescence. Characterising the duty cycle of active galactic nuclei is crucial for understanding the impact of the energy they release on the host galaxy. For radio AGN, this can be done by identifying dying (remnant) and restarted radio galaxies from their radio spectral properties. Using the combination of images at 1400 MHz produced by Apertif, the new phased-array feed receiver installed on the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, and images at 150 MHz provided by LOFAR, we have derived resolved spectral index images (at a resolution of ~15 arcsec) for all the sources within ~6 deg^2 area of the Lockman Hole region. We were able to select 15 extended radio sources with emission (partly or entirely) characterised by extremely steep spectral indices (steeper than 1.2). These objects represent radio sources in the remnant or the restarted phases of their life cycle. Our findings suggest this cycle to be relatively fast. They also show a variety of properties relevant for modelling the evolution of radio galaxies. For example, the restarted activity can occur while the remnant structure from a previous phase of activity is still visible. This provides constraints on the duration of the 'off' (dying) phase. In extended remnants with ultra-steep spectra at low frequencies, the activity likely stopped a few hundred megayears ago, and they correspond to the older tail of the age distribution of radio galaxies, in agreement with simulations of radio source evolution. We find remnant radio sources with a variety of structures (from double-lobed to amorphous), suggesting different types of progenitors. The present work sets the stage for exploiting low-frequency spectral index studies of extended sources by taking advantage of the large areas common to the LOFAR and the Apertif surveys., Accepted for publication in A&A. Radio relics are elongated sources related to shocks driven by galaxy cluster merger events. Although these objects are highly polarized at GHz frequencies ($\gtrsim 20\%$), high-resolution studies of their polarization properties are still lacking. We present the first high-resolution and high-sensitivity polarimetry study of the merging galaxy cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301 in the 1-4 GHz frequency band. We use the $QU$-fitting approach to model the Stokes $I$, $Q$ and $U$ emission, obtaining best-fit intrinsic polarization fraction ($p_0$), intrinsic polarization angle ($\chi_0$), Rotation Measure (RM) and wavelength-dependent depolarization ($\sigma_{\rm RM}$) maps of the cluster. Our analysis focuses on the northern relic (RN). For the first time in a radio relic, we observe a decreasing polarization fraction in the downstream region. Our findings are possibly explained by geometrical projections and/or by decreasing of the magnetic field anisotropy towards the cluster center. From the amount of depolarization of the only detected background radio galaxy, we estimate a turbulent magnetic field strength of $B_{\rm turb}\sim5.6~\mu$Gauss in the relic. Finally, we observe Rotation Measure fluctuations of about 30 rad m$^{-2}$ around at the median value of 140.8 rad m$^{-2}$ at the relic position., Comment: 26 pages, 23 Figures, 5 Tables. Diffuse radio emission at the centre of galaxy clusters has been observed both in merging clusters on scales of Mpc, called giant radio haloes, and in relaxed systems with a cool-core on smaller scales, named mini haloes. Giant radio haloes and mini haloes are thought to be distinct classes of sources. However, recent observations have revealed the presence of diffuse radio emission on Mpc scales in clusters that do not show strong dynamical activity. RX J1720.1+2638 is a cool-core cluster, presenting both a bright central mini halo and a fainter diffuse, steep-spectrum emission extending beyond the cluster core that resembles giant radio halo emission. In this paper, we present new observations performed with the LOFAR Low Band Antennas (LBA) at 54 MHz. These observations, combined with data at higher frequencies, allow us to constrain the spectral properties of the radio emission. The large-scale emission presents an ultra-steep spectrum with $\alpha_{54}^{144}\sim3.2$. The radio emission inside and outside the cluster core have strictly different properties, as there is a net change in spectral index and they follow different radio-X-ray surface brightness correlations. We argue that the large-scale diffuse emission is generated by particles re-acceleration after a minor merger. While for the central mini halo we suggest that it could be generated by secondary electrons and positrons from hadronic interactions of relativistic nuclei with the dense cool-core gas, as an alternative to re-acceleration models., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report extremely faint 144 MHz radio emission from two gravitationally lensed quasars, SDSS J1004+4112 (z = 1.730) and SDSS J2222+2745 (z = 2.803), using the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) data release 2. After correcting for the lensing magnifications, the two objects have intrinsic flux-densities of 13+/-2 and 58+/-6 uJy, respectively, corresponding to 144 MHz rest-frame luminosities of 10^(23.2+/-0.2) and 10^(24.42+/-0.05) W / Hz, respectively. In the case of SDSS J1004+4112, the intrinsic flux density is close to the confusion limit of LoTSS, making this radio source the faintest to be detected thus far at low frequencies, and the lowest luminosity known at z > 0.65. Under the assumption that all of the radio emission is due to star-formation processes, the quasar host galaxies are predicted to have star-formation rates of 5.5^(+1.8)_(-1.4) and 73^(+34)_(-22) M / yr, respectively. Context. High-redshift quasars signpost the early accretion history of the Universe. The penetrating nature of X-rays enables a less absorption-biased census of the population of these luminous and persistent sources compared to optical/near-infrared colour selection. The ongoing SRG/eROSITA X-ray all-sky survey offers a unique opportunity to uncover the bright end of the high-z quasar population and probe new regions of colour parameter space. Aims. We searched for high-z quasars within the X-ray source population detected in the contiguous ~140 deg2 field observed by eROSITA during the performance verification phase. With the purpose of demonstrating the unique survey science capabilities of eROSITA, this field was observed at the depth of the final all-sky survey. The blind X-ray selection of high-redshift sources in a large contiguous, near-uniform survey with a well-understood selection function can be directly translated into constraints on the X-ray luminosity function (XLF), which encodes the luminosity-dependent evolution of accretion through cosmic time. Methods. We collected the available spectroscopic information in the eFEDS field, including the sample of all currently known optically selected z > 5.5 quasars and cross-matched secure Legacy DR8 counterparts of eROSITA-detected X-ray point-like sources with this spectroscopic sample. Results. We report the X-ray detection of eFEDSU J083644.0+005459, an eROSITA source securely matched to the well-known quasar SDSS J083643.85+005453.3 (z = 5.81). The soft X-ray flux of the source derived from eROSITA is consistent with previous Chandra observations. The detection of SDSS J083643.85+005453.3 allows us to place the first constraints on the XLF at z > 5.5 based on a secure spectroscopic redshift. Compared to extrapolations from lower-redshift observations, this favours a relatively flat slope for the XLF at z ~ 6 beyond L*, the knee in the luminosity function. In addition, we report the detection of the quasar with LOFAR at 145 MHz and ASKAP at 888 MHz. The reported flux densities confirm a spectral flattening at lower frequencies in the emission of the radio core, indicating that SDSS J083643.85+005453.3 could be a (sub-) gigahertz peaked spectrum source. The inferred spectral shape and the parsec-scale radio morphology of SDSS J083643.85+005453.3 indicate that it is in an early stage of its evolution into a large-scale radio source or confined in a dense environment. We find no indications for a strong jet contribution to the X-ray emission of the quasar, which is therefore likely to be linked to accretion processes. Conclusions. Our results indicate that the population of X-ray luminous AGNs at high redshift may be larger than previously thought. From our XLF constraints, we make the conservative prediction that eROSITA will detect ~90 X-ray luminous AGNs at redshifts 5.7 < z < 6.4 in the full-sky survey (De+RU). While subject to different jet physics, both high-redshift quasars detected by eROSITA so far are radio-loud; a hint at the great potential of combined X-ray and radio surveys for the search of luminous high-redshift quasars.

We present new LOFAR observations of the massive merging galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745. The cluster hosts the most powerful radio halo known to date. These new observations, in combination with published uGMRT (300$-$850 MHz) and VLA (1$-$6.5 GHz) data, reveal that the halo is more extended than previously thought, with a largest linear size of $\sim2.2 \rm Mpc$. The halo shows a steep spectrum ($\alpha_{144\,\text{MHz}}^{1.5\,\text{GHz}}\sim-1.4$) and a steepening ($\alpha_{1.5 \text{GHz}}^{5.5 \text{GHz}}\sim-1.9$) above 1.5 GHz. We find a strong scattering in spectral index maps on scales of 50$-$100 kpc. We suggest that such a strong scattering may be a consequence of the regime where inverse Compton dominate the energy losses of electrons. The spectral index becomes steeper and shows an increased curvature in the outermost regions of the halo. We combined the radio data with \textit{Chandra} observations to investigate the connection between the thermal and non-thermal components of the intracluster medium (ICM). Despite a significant substructure in the halo emission, the radio brightness correlates strongly with the X-ray brightness at all observed frequencies. The radio-versus-X-ray brightness correlation slope steepens at a higher radio frequency (from $b_{144 \text{MHz}}=0.67\pm0.05$ to $b_{3.0 \text{GHz}}=0.98\pm0.09$) and the spectral index shows a significant anti correlation with the X-ray brightness. Both pieces of evidence further support a spectral steepening in the external regions. The compelling evidence for a steep spectral index, the existence of a spectral break above 1.5 GHz, and the dependence of radio and X-ray surface brightness correlation on frequency are interpreted in the context of turbulent reacceleration models. In recent years, the level of the extragalactic radio background has become a point of considerable interest, with some lines of argument pointing to an entirely new cosmological synchrotron background. The contribution of the known discrete source population to the sky temperature is key to this discussion. Because of the steep spectral index of the excess over the cosmic microwave background, it is best studied at low frequencies where the signal is strongest. The Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) wide and deep sky surveys give us the best constraints yet on the contribution of discrete extragalactic sources at 144 MHz, and in particular allow us to include contributions from diffuse, low-surface-brightness emission that could not be fully accounted for in previous work. We show that, even with these new data, known sources can still only account for around a quarter of the estimated extragalactic sky temperature at LOFAR frequencies., 8 pages, 4 figures. We present deep and high fidelity images of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2256 at low frequencies, using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) and LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR). This cluster hosts one of the most prominent known relics, with a remarkably spectacular network of filamentary substructures. The new uGMRT (300-850 MHz) and LOFAR (120-169 MHz) observations, combined with the archival Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA; 1-4 GHz) data, allowed us to carry out the first spatially resolved spectral analysis of the exceptional relic emission down to 6 arcsec resolution over a broad range of frequencies. Our new sensitive radio images confirm the presence of complex filaments of magnetized relativistic plasma also at low frequencies. We find that the integrated spectrum of the relic is consistent with a single power law, without any sign of spectral steepening, at least below 3 GHz. Unlike previous claims, the relic shows an integrated spectral index of $-1.07\pm0.02$ between 144 MHz and 3 GHz, which is consistent with the (quasi)stationary shock approximation. The spatially resolved spectral analysis suggests that the relic surface very likely traces the complex shock front, with a broad distribution of Mach numbers propagating through a turbulent and dynamically active intracluster medium. Our results show that the northern part of the relic is seen edge-on and the southern part close to face-on. We suggest that the complex filaments are regions where higher Mach numbers dominate the (re-)acceleration of electrons that are responsible for the observed radio emission., Comment: 27 pages, 14 Figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) is an ideal instrument to conduct deep extragalactic surveys. It has a large field of view and is sensitive to large-scale and compact emission. It is, however, very challenging to synthesize thermal noise limited maps at full resolution, mainly because of the complexity of the low-frequency sky and the direction dependent effects (phased array beams and ionosphere). In this first paper of a series, we present a new calibration and imaging pipeline that aims at producing high fidelity, high dynamic range images with LOFAR High Band Antenna data, while being computationally efficient and robust against the absorption of unmodeled radio emission. We apply this calibration and imaging strategy to synthesize deep images of the Boötes and Lockman Hole fields at ~150 MHz, totaling ~80 and ~100 h of integration, respectively, and reaching unprecedented noise levels at these low frequencies of ≲30 and ≲23μJy beam−1in the inner ~3 deg2. This approach is also being used to reduce the LOTSS-wide data for the second data release.

Numerous examples of ram pressure stripping in galaxy clusters are present in literature; however, substantially less work has been focused on ram pressure stripping in lower mass groups. In this work we use the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) to search for jellyfish galaxies in ~500 SDSS groups (z, 10 pages, 7 figures, 1 appendix, accepted for publication in A&A

International audience; The LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) will cover the full northern sky and, additionally, aims to observe the LoTSS deep fields to a noise level of ≲10 μJy beam−1 over several tens of square degrees in areas that have the most extensive ancillary data. This paper presents the ELAIS-N1 deep field, the deepest of the LoTSS deep fields to date. With an effective observing time of 163.7 h, it reaches a root mean square noise level of ≲20 μJy beam−1 in the central region (and below 30 μJy beam−1 over 10 square degrees). The resolution is ~6 arcsecs and 84 862 radio sources were detected in the full area (68 square degrees) with 74 127 sources in the highest quality area at less than 3 degrees from the pointing centre. The observation reaches a sky density of more than 5000 sources per square degree in the central region (~5 square degrees). We present the calibration procedure, which addresses the special configuration of some observations and the extended bandwidth covered (115–177 MHz; central frequency 146.2 MHz) compared to standard LoTSS. We also describe the methods used to calibrate the flux density scale using cross-matching with sources detected by other radio surveys in the literature. We find the flux density uncertainty related to the flux density scale to be ~6.5 per cent. By studying the variations of the flux density measurements between different epochs, we show that relative flux density calibration is reliable out to about a 3 degree radius, but that additional flux density uncertainty is present for all sources at about the 3 per cent level; this is likely to be associated with residual calibration errors, and is shown to be more significant in datasets with poorer ionosphere conditions. We also provide intra-band spectral indices, which can be useful to detect sources with unusual spectral properties. Context. Radio halos are megaparsec-scale diffuse radio sources{ mostly} located at the centres of merging galaxy clusters. The common mechanism invoked to explain their origin is the re-acceleration of relativistic particles caused by large-scale turbulence. Aims. Current re-acceleration models predict that a significant number of halos at high redshift should be characterised by very steep spectra ($\alpha, Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication in A&A

Thermal gas in the center of galaxy clusters can show substantial motions that generate surface-brightness and temperature discontinuities known as cold fronts. The motions may be triggered by minor or off-axis mergers that preserve the cool core of the system. The dynamics of the thermal gas can also generate radio emission from the intra-cluster medium (ICM) and impact the evolution of clusters' radio sources. We aim to study the central region of Abell 1775, a system in an ambiguous dynamical state at $z=0.072$ which is known to host an extended head-tail radio galaxy, with the goal of investigating the connection between thermal and nonthermal components in its center. We made use of a deep (100 ks) Chandra observation accompanied by LOFAR 144 MHz, GMRT 235 MHz and 610 MHz, and VLA 1.4 GHz radio data. We find a spiral-like pattern in the X-ray surface brightness that is mirrored in the temperature and pseudo-entropy maps. Additionally, we characterize an arc-shaped cold front in the ICM. We interpret these features in the context of a slingshot gas tail scenario. The structure of the head-tail radio galaxy "breaks" at the position of the cold front, showing an extension that is detected only at low frequencies, likely due to its steep and curved spectrum. We speculate that particle reacceleration is occurring in the outer region of this tail, which in total covers a projected size of $\sim800$ kpc. We also report the discovery of revived fossil plasma with ultra-steep spectrum radio emission in the cluster core together with a central diffuse radio source that is bounded by the arc-shaped cold front.
