Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

2. Deuterium retention in tin (Sn) and lithium–tin (Li–Sn) samples exposed to ISTTOK plasmas

Abstract

The use of lithium (Li) or tin (Sn) as a liquid metal plasma facing component is proposed as a solution to the high power load issue on the divertor region of nuclear fusion reactors. The possibility to use these materials depends on their compatibility with hydrogen plasmas. With the purpose of realizing deuterium retention studies, specimens of pure Sn (99.999% Sn) and Li–Sn alloy (30 at.% Li) were exposed in the ISTTOK edge plasma. Ex situ analysis of the samples was performed by means of ion beam diagnostics. Nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) technique was applied using the D(3He,p)4He reaction to quantify the fuel retention on the samples.In this work the deuterium retention is compared between pure Sn and Li–Sn alloy samples in both liquid and solid states. All the samples were found to have retention ratios smaller than 0.1 at.%. This low retention ratio is expected for pure tin given its high mass and the instability of tin hydrides. However the retention was unexpectedly low for the case of Li–Sn which was thought to be dominated by the lithium fraction in the alloy. Abstract

Reconsiderando la extinción de mamíferos en el Centro de Endemismo Pernambuco perteneciente al bosque atlántico brasileño Se ha calculado que, en los últimos 500 años, se han extinguido 21 mamíferos en el Centro de Endemismo Pernambuco. En el presente estudio, realizamos un examen crítico de los datos aportados en las publicaciones científicas históricas y recientes, y concluimos que el número real de mamíferos extintos es de siete, lo que indica que la cifra anterior de 21 especies extintas es una sobrestimación de aproximadamente 30 %. Nuestra lista difiere de las publicaciones previas en que incluye especies aún existentes (n = 5) y excluye otras que nunca habían sido registradas en el Centro de Endemismo Pernambuco (n = 8). Abstract

A global heat flux model based on a fractional derivative of plasma pressure is proposed for the heat transport in fusion plasmas. The degree of the fractional derivative of the heat flux, α, is defined through the power balance analysis of the steady state. The model was used to obtain the experimental values of α for a large database of the Joint European Torus (JET) carbon-wall as well as ITER like-wall plasmas. Abstract Epidemiological studies reveal a link between osteoporosis and the risk of ischemic cardiovascular disease. We illustrate an association between coronary calcification and bone microarchitecture in older adults based on the SPAH study. This cross-sectional research comprised 256 individuals subjected to cardiac coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) for coronary artery calcification (CAC), high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) at the tibia and radius with standardized z score parameters, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to evaluate bone status. We used Student’s t test and the Mann–Whitney and Chi-squared tests for comparison of basal measurements. Association analysis was performed using the Poisson regression model with adjustment for CAC and sex. Multivariate analysis revealed different bone variables for predicting CAC in DXA and HR-pQCT scenarios. Resumo Fundamento: A vitamina D (VD) tem um importante papel na função cardíaca. No entanto, a vitamina exerce uma curva “dose-resposta” bifásica na fisiopatologia cardiovascular e pode causar efeitos deletérios, mesmo em doses não tóxicas. A VD exerce suas funções celulares ligando-se ao seu receptor. Ainda, a expressão da proteína de interação com a tiorredoxina (TXNIP) é positivamente regulada pela VD. A TXNIP modula diferentes visa de sinalização celular que podem ser importantes para a remodelação cardíaca. Objetivos: Avaliar se a suplementação com VD leva à remodelação cardíaca, e se a TXNIP e a tiorredoxina (Trx) estão associadas com esse processo. Métodos: Duzentos e cinquenta ratos Wistar machos foram alocados em três grupos: controle (C, n=21), sem suplementação com VD; VD3 (n = 22) e VD10 (n=21), suplementados com 3,000 e 10,000 UI de VD/ kg de ração, respectivamente, por dois meses. Os grupos foram comparados por análise de variância (ANOVA) com um fator e teste post hoc de Holm-Sidak (variáveis com distribuição normal), ou pelo teste de Kruskal-Wallis e análise post-hoc de Dunn. O nível de significância para todos os testes foi de 5%. Resultados: A expressão de TXNIP foi mais alta e a atividade do Trx foi mais baixa no grupo VD10. Os animais que receberam suplementação com VD apresentaram aumento de hidroperóxido lipídico e diminuição de superóxido dismutase e glutationa peroxidase. A proteína Bcl-2 foi mais baixa no grupo VD10. Observou-se uma diminuição na β-oxidação de ácidos graxos, no ciclo do ácido tricarboxílico, na cadeia transportadora de elétrons, e um aumento na via glicolítica. Conclusão: A suplementação com VD levou à remodelação cardíaca e esse processo pode ser modulado por TXNIP e Trx, e consequentemente por estresse oxidativo.

Abstract

Introduction: Tobacco smoke is associated with oxidative and inflammatory pathways, increasing the risk of chronic-degenerative diseases. Our goal was to evaluate the effects of acute “Pera” and “Moro” orange juice consumption on inflammatory processes and oxidative stress in microRNA (miRNA) expression in plasma from healthy smokers.Methods: This was a randomized crossover study that included healthy smokers over 18 years old. Blood samples were collected before and 11 h after beverage ingestion. Participants were instructed to drink 400 mL of Pera orange juice (Citrus sinensis), Moro orange juice (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck), or water. Each subject drank the beverages in a 3-way crossover study design. Inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers and circulating miRNA expression profiles were determined. The subjects maintained their usual tobacco exposure during the experiment.Results: We included 18 individuals (12 men and 6 women), with 37.0 ± 12.0 years old. All subjects received the 3 interventions. Increased expression of circulating miRNAs (miR-150-5p, miR-25-3p, and miR-451a) was verified after cigarette smoking, which were attenuated after intake of both types of orange juice. There was no difference regarding serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6, MMP-9, and C-reactive protein. Despite the increased activity of serum superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase after “Pera” or “Moro” orange juice intake, respectively, no changes in lipid hydroperoxide levels were detected.Conclusion: Tobaccos smokers showed increased expression of miR-150-5p, miR-25-3p, and miR-451a was noted, and attenuated by orange juice intake. miRNAs were predicted to regulate 244 target genes with roles in oxidative stress, PI3K-Akt, and MAPK signaling, which are pathways frequently involved in smoking-related cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Background: Oocyte quality and maturation are influenced by protein supplementation. Objective: To evaluate the influence of fetal bovine serum (FBS) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) concentrations on the recovery and in vitro maturation (IVM) of bovine oocytes. Methods: The study was divided into Stage 1 (oocyte recovery), and Stage 2 (IVM). In the first stage, three experiments were conducted according to the recovery (R) medium used: (R1) 10 vs. 20% FBS; (R2) 5 vs. 10% BSA; and (R3) the best results from R1, R2, and the combination of FBS+BSA (5+5%). Within the second stage, the maturation medium was supplemented according to three experiments: (M1) 5 vs. 10% FBS; (M2) 0.4 vs. 0.8% BSA; and (M3) better results of M1, M2, and the combination of FBS+BSA (5+0.8%). Results: In Stage 1 (R1 and R2), the media with 10% FBS and 10% BSA showed better oocyte quality results and were defined for experiment R3. In R3, the 10% FBS and the combination of FBS+BSA (5+5%) allowed recovery of better-quality oocytes. In Stage 2 (M1 and M2), media with both levels of FBS (5 and 10%) and 0.8% BSA were defined as better according to the maturation and viability rates of cumulus cells, so they were defined for experiment M3. In M3, no difference was noted among the supplements. Conclusions: For oocyte recovery, 10% FBS and the combination of FBS+BSA (5+5%) can be used to obtain immature oocytes. For the in vitro maturation, FBS (both levels, 5 and 10%) and BSA (0.8%) can be used alone or in combination.

Abstract

A presente pesquisa exploratória, de natureza qualitativa do tipo participante, objetivou analisar a mobilização de habilidades e personalidades criativas por licenciandos em Química a partir de uma atividade envolvendo o pensamento divergente e convergente. A atividade foi desenvolvida em quatro momentos: i) apresentação das ministrantes e dos objetivos da atividade; ii) apresentação dos objetos e da justificativa de escolha pelo licenciandos; iii) desenvolvimento de tarefas com base nos fundamentos do pensamento divergente e convergente pelos licenciandos em grupo; e iv) diálogo final entre os participantes e as ministrantes da atividade proposta. Os dados, constituídos por meio da observação participante associada às notas de campo, questionários e análise documental, foram analisados à luz da Análise de Conteúdo por meio de duas categorias definidas previamente: habilidades criativas e características de personalidade criativa. Em nossos achados, constatamos indícios de que a atividade mobilizou as operações de pensamento divergente (fluência, flexibilidade, elaboração e originalidade) e de pensamento convergente (avaliação) bem como características de personalidade criativa.

Abstract

This cohort study aimed to characterize the oral microbiome of children with CLP, from two different age groups, and evaluate the effect of supervised or unsupervised toothbrushing on the microbiome of the cleft over time. Swab samples were collected from the cleft area at three different time points (A; no brushing, B; after 15 days and C; after 30 days) and were analyzed using next-generation sequencing to determine the microbial composition and diversity in these time points. Overall, brushing significantly decreased the abundance of the genera Alloprevotella and Leptotrichia in the two age groups examined, and for Alloprevotella this decrease was more evident for children (2–6 years old). In the preteen group (7–12 years old), a significant relative increase of the genus Rothia was observed after brushing. In this study, the systematic brushing over a period of thirty days also resulted in differences at the intra-individual bacterial richness.

Abstract

Scaffolds of bioglass derived from BG45S5 (45 wt% SiO2, 24.5 wt% CaO, 24.5 wt% Na2O and 6 wt% P2O5) containing 10 wt% niobium were prepared by gelcasting method. The scaffolds presented a 3D porous structure with interconnected and spherical pores (pore size range 100 μm to 500 μm) and high porosity (89%), similar to trabecular architecture of spongy bone. The compressive strength was 0.18 ± 0.03 MPa which is acceptable for bone repair applications. The in vitro biological studies showed cytocompatibility for human osteoblastic cells as well tendency for higher alkaline phosphatase activity. Therefore, the findings here suggest the great potential of the scaffolds for using in bone tissue engineering.

Abstract

A 71-year-old man with Chagas disease and stable angina on minimum exertion underwent coronary computed tomography angiography and cine angiography that revealed heavily calcified multivessel disease involving the left main artery (LM). Due to the degree of calcification, it was decided to perform rotablation. The first-stage percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with rotablation was performed on the LM, left anterior descending artery and second diagonal branch without complications. Almost 30 days later he returned for right coronary artery (RCA) PCI. The proposed strategy was rotational atherectomy in the posterior descending artery (PDA) and right posterolateral artery (RPLA) with a 1.5 mm burr, followed by implantation of two drug-eluting stents (DES). Through right femoral artery access the RPLA lesion was ablated with success. As there were no signs of dissection and TIMI 3 flow was maintained, the 0.009″ RotaWire was repositioned to cross the PDA lesion and debulking of the lesion was performed. After two attempts we succeeded in crossing the lesion with the 1.5 mm burr, however entrapment of the burr ensued. The system was pulled back until the guiding catheter penetrated deep into the RCA, and attempts were made to release the Rotablator by moving it forward and backward, but the burr did not even spin. The contralateral femoral artery was therefore punctured and a 6F JR guiding catheter was inserted, in order to move a guidewire and small angioplasty balloon tangentially to the burr, but without success. Finally we advanced the guidewire using the ‘knuckle’ technique, taking advantage of the kinking of the distal portion of the PT2 guidewire, performing a subintimal dissection and re-entry, and could then easily cross the balloon, inflate it and release the trapped burr. Through the 6F system, two programmed and one bailout DES were successfully implanted in the PDA, RPLA and RCA, obtaining final TIMI 3 flow without complications. Resumo: Um homem de 71 anos, diabético, com doença de Chagas e com angina estável de mínimos esforços, efetuou angiotomografia coronária e cineangiocoronariografia revelando doença multiarterial severamente calcificada envolvendo o tronco da coronária esquerda (TCE). Devido ao grau de calcificação, a aterectomia rotacional foi considerada. Na primeira etapa a angioplastia coronária (ATC) com aterectomia rotacional (Rotablator) foi realizada no TCE, artéria descendente anterior e segundo ramo diagonal sem intercorrências. Quase 30 dias depois retornou para ATC da artéria coronária direita (CD). A estratégia proposta foi a aterectomia rotacional nos ramos DP e VPD com oliva de 1,5 mm, seguida de implante de dois stents farmacológicos (DES). Por acesso femoral direito 7F, a lesão do VPD foi ablacionada com sucesso. Como não havia sinais de disseção e manutenção de fluxo TIMI III, reposicionamos o “Rotawire 0,009” atravessando a lesão do DP e procedemos à ablação da lesão. Depois de duas tentativas conseguimos cruzar a lesão; no entanto, houve o aprisionamento da oliva. O sistema foi tracionado sem sucesso, levando o catéter guia a penetrar fundo na CD, com posterior disseção. Foi tentada a retirada do “Rotablator” com movimentos de avanço e recuo, mas a oliva sequer girou. A decisão então foi puncionarmos a artéria femoral contralateral inserindo um cateter guia JR6F e tentarmos avançar uma corda guia e balão de fino calibre tangencialmente à oliva. Não obtivemos sucesso até que finalmente avançamos o fio-guia com a técnica de Knuckle aproveitando a dobra da extremidade distal do fio-guia PT2 e pudemos facilmente atravessar o balão, insuflar e libertar o aprisionamento da oliva. Através do catéter guia 6F, os dois stents programados (DP e VPD) e um adicional (CD) foram implantados com sucesso obtendo-se fluxo final TIMI III, sem intercorrências clínicas.

Abstract

The Patos Lagoon estuary is a reservoir of fine sediments derived from the continental basin, which is exported to the coastal area through a narrow channel with average discharge of 2000 m3 s−1. The Port of Rio Grande is located in this connection channel between the Patos Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, and recently received investments from the Brazilian Government to expand its draft and modify the configuration of the breakwaters located at the mouth. The objective of this study is to investigate changes in the fine sediment dynamics in the estuarine and coastal region, after the modernization work carried out at the Port of Rio Grande. The study was conducted using a three-dimensional numerical model (TELEMAC-3D) coupled with a sediment in suspension and morphological model (SediMorph). Results were analyzed in a comparative way in relation to the deposition pattern observed in these regions before and after the construction work. Results indicate that there was a change in the deposition pattern and redistribution of sediment at the bottom due to hydrodynamic changes resulting from the new configuration of the breakwaters and progressive deepening of the access channel.

Abstract

Biological, and particularly antimicrobial, activities have been demonstrated for the essential oil of propolis samples worlwide, yet their mutagenic effects remain unknown. To correlate antimicrobial effects with mutagenic risks, the present study evaluated the antifungal and antibacterial activities of the essential oil obtained from brown propolis collected from the Cerrado biome in Midwest Brazil (EOP), testing it against nine pathogenic microorganisms. Evaluation of mutagenic potential was based on the somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) performed on wing cells of standard (ST) and high-bioactivation (HB) crosses of Drosophila melanogaster. EOP was extracted by hydrodistillation, and sesquiterpenes were characterized by GC–MS as its major constituents. The crude oil proved active against Cryptococcus neoformans and Enterococcus faecalis, as did two of its major constituents, spathulenol and (E)-nerolidol – the latter being also active against Staphylococcus aureus – isolated using chromatographic procedures. No significant increase in the number of somatic mutations was observed in the offspring of ST or HB crosses – the latter exhibiting enhanced levels of metabolizing enzymes of the cytochrome P450 type – treated with 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% EOP. These findings revealed no mutagenic activity of EOP, even when tested against the HB strain, and demonstrated that its antimicrobial activities are not associated with DNA damage induction (investigated with SMART), suggesting the potential of EOP as a natural preservative.

Abstract

The potential of edible mushrooms as an unexploited treasure trove, although rarely included in known food guidelines, is highlighted. Their role in shielding people against the side effects of an unhealthy stylish diet is reviewed. Mushrooms complement the human diet with various bioactive molecules not identified or deficient in foodstuffs of plant and animal sources, being considered a functional food for the prevention of several human diseases. Mushrooms have been widely used as medicinal products for more than 2,000 years, but globally the potential field of use of wild mushrooms has been untapped. There is a broad range of edible mushrooms which remain poorly identified or even unreported which is a valuable pool as sources of bioactive compounds for biopharma utilization and new dietary supplements. Some unique elements of mushrooms and their role in preventative healthcare are emphasized, through their positive impact on the immune system. The potential of mushrooms as antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-neoplastic, and other health concerns is discussed. Mushrooms incorporate top sources of non-digestible oligosaccharides, and ergothioneine, which humans are unable to synthesize, the later a unique antioxidant, cytoprotective, and anti-inflammatory element, with therapeutic potential, approved by world food agencies. The prebiotic activity of mushrooms beneficially affects gut homeostasis performance and the balance of gut microbiota is enhanced. Several recent studies on neurological impact and contribution to the growth of nerve and brain cells are mentioned. Indeed, mushrooms as functional foods' nutraceuticals are presently regarded as next-generation foods, supporting health and wellness, and are promising prophylactic or therapeutic agents.

Abstract

Regulation of inflammation is a critical process for maintaining physiological homeostasis. The λ-carrageenan (λ-CGN) is a mucopolysaccharide extracted from the cell wall of red algae (Chondrus crispus) capable of inducing acute intestinal inflammation, which is translated into the production of acute phase reactants secreted into the blood circulation. However, the associated mechanisms in vertebrates are not well understood. Here, we investigated the crucial factors behind the inflammatory milieu of λ-CGN-mediated inflammation administered at 0, 1.75, and 3.5% (v/w) by i.p. injection into the peritoneal cavity of adult zebrafish (ZF) (Danio rerio). We found that polymorphonuclear leukocytes (neutrophils) and lymphocytes infiltrating the ZF peritoneal cavity had short-term persistence. Nevertheless, they generate a strong pattern of inflammation that affects systemically and is enough to produce edema in the cavity. Consistent with these findings, cell infiltration, which causes notable tissue changes, resulted in the overexpression of several acute inflammatory markers at the protein level. Using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography followed by a hybrid linear ion-trap mass spectrometry shotgun proteomic approach, we identified 2938 plasma proteins among the animals injected with PBS and 3.5% λ-CGN. First, the bioinformatic analysis revealed the composition of the plasma proteome. Interestingly, 72 commonly expressed proteins were recorded among the treated and control groups, but, surprisingly, 2830 novel proteins were differentially expressed exclusively in the λ-CGN-induced group. Furthermore, from the commonly expressed proteins, compared to the control group 62 proteins got a significant (p < 0.05) upregulation in the λ-CGN-treated group, while the remaining ten proteins were downregulated. Next, we obtained the major protein-protein interaction networks between hub protein clusters in the blood plasma of the λ-CGN induced group. Moreover, to understand the molecular underpinnings of these effects based on the unveiled protein sets, we performed a bioinformatic structural similarity analysis and generated overlapping 3D reconstructions between ZF and humans during acute inflammation. Biological pathway analysis pointed to the activation and abundance of diverse classical immune and acute phase reactants, several catalytic enzymes, and varied proteins supporting the immune response. Together, this information can be used for testing and finding novel pharmacological targets to treat human intestinal inflammatory diseases.

Abstract

We present the first structure of the human Kir2.1 channel containing both transmembrane domain (TMD) and cytoplasmic domain (CTD). Kir2.1 channels are strongly inward-rectifying potassium channels that play a key role in maintaining resting membrane potential. Their gating is modulated by phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP 2 ). Genetically inherited defects in Kir2.1 channels are responsible for several rare human diseases, including Andersen’s syndrome. The structural analysis (cryo–electron microscopy), surface plasmon resonance, and electrophysiological experiments revealed a well-connected network of interactions between the PIP 2 -binding site and the G-loop through residues R312 and H221. In addition, molecular dynamics simulations and normal mode analysis showed the intrinsic tendency of the CTD to tether to the TMD and a movement of the secondary anionic binding site to the membrane even without PIP 2 . Our results revealed structural features unique to human Kir2.1 and provided insights into the connection between G-loop and gating and the pathological mechanisms associated with this channel.

Abstract

Silicone-based medical devices composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are widely used all over the human body (e.g., urinary stents and catheters, central venous catheters stents) with extreme clinical success. Nevertheless, their abiotic surfaces, being prone to microorganism colonization, are often involved in infection occurrence. Improving PDMS antimicrobial properties by surface functionalization with biosurfactants to prevent related infections has been the goal of different works, but studies that mimic the clinical use of these novel surfaces are missing. This work aims at the biofunctional assessment of PDMS functionalized with rhamnolipids (RLs), using translational tests that more closely mimic the clinical microenvironment. Rhamnolipids were covalently bonded to PDMS, and the obtained surfaces were characterized by contact angle modification assessment, ATR-FTIR analysis and atomic force microscopy imaging. Moreover, a parallel flow chamber was used to assess the Staphylococcus aureus antibiofilm activity of the obtained surfaces under dynamic conditions, and an in vitro characterization with human dermal fibroblast cells in both direct and indirect characterization assays, along with an in vivo subcutaneous implantation assay in the translational rabbit model, was performed. A 1.2 log reduction in S. aureus biofilm was observed after 24 h under flow dynamic conditions. Additionally, functionalized PDMS lessened cell adhesion upon direct contact, while supporting a cytocompatible profile, within an indirect assay. The adequacy of the biological response was further validated upon in vivo subcutaneous tissue implantation. An important step was taken towards biofunctional assessment of RLs-functionalized PDMS, reinforcing their suitability for medical device usage and infection prevention.

Abstract

In this paper, we characterize the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented full transformations of a finite chain, as well as the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented partial transformations and the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented partial permutations of a finite chain. Characterizations of the monoids of endomorphisms of the subsemigroups of all orientation-preserving transformations of the three semigroups aforementioned are also given. In addition, we compute the number of endomorphisms of each of these six semigroups.

Abstract

In clinic there is a demand to solve the drawback of medical devices multispecies related infections. Consequently, different biomaterial surfaces, such as vascular catheters, urgently need improvement regarding their antifouling/antimicrobial properties. In this work, we covalently functionalized medical grade polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with antimicrobial rhamnolipids to investigate the biomaterial surface activity towards mono and dual species biofilms. Preparation of surfaces with "piranha" oxidation, followed by APTES bonding and carbodiimide reaction with rhamnolipids effectively bonded these compounds to PDMS surface as confirmed by FTIR-ATR and XPS analysis. Generated surfaces were active towards S. aureus biofilm formation showing a 4.2 log reduction while with S. epidermidis and C. albicans biofilms a reduction of 1.2 and 1.0 log reduction, respectively, was observed. Regarding dual-species testing the higher biofilm log reduction observed was 1.9. Additionally, biocompatibility was assessed by cytocompatibility towards human fibroblastic cells, low platelet activation and absence of vascular irritation. Our work not only sheds light on using covalently bonded rhamnolipids towards dual species biofilms but also highlights the biocompatibility of the obtained PDMS surfaces.

Dietary changes have accompanied the evolution of humanity and is proven to be fundamental in human evolution and well-being. Nutrition is essential for survival and as a matter of health and equilibrium of the human body. About 1/3 of the human diet is composed by fermented foods and beverages, which are widely distributed and consumed in different societies around the world, no matter the culture and lifestyle. Fermented foods are derived from the fermentation process of different substrates by microorganisms, and more importantly to humans, by those with beneficial characteristics, due to the positive impact on health. Food is transformed in the gut, gaining new proprieties, and increasing its value to the organism. The effects of fermented foods and beverages can be assessed by its influence at the gut microbiota level. Recent studies show the major importance of the gut microbiota role in modulating the organism homeostasis and homeorhesis. More crosslinks between health, gut microbiota and diet are being established especially in the gut⁻brain axis field. Therefore, the benefits of diet, in particularly of fermented foods and beverages, should be studied and pursued in order to promote a good health status.
