The Cichlidae is one of the most diverse fish families in Neotropical and Afrotropical regions. It includes many species that are valued for aquaculture, the aquarium trade, and sport fishing, which has resulted in their introduction into different ecosystems worldwide. In the Americas, non-native cichlids have been recorded from southernmost Canada to northern Argentina, and North America has received the largest number of non-native cichlids followed by South and Central America. This group has a set of life history traits (e.g., parental care, multiple spawning, and piscivorous or omnivorous diets) that favors its occupation of new environments. This review provides information about non-native cichlids in the watersheds of the American continents including their distribution, predominant introduction vectors, reasons for success, and impacts on local ecosystems.

The genetic diversity of invasive and native populations of Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel, 1840) from the Paraná, Parnaiba and Araguaia-Tocantins river basins was assessed by using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Genetic data confirmed the hypothesis of low genetic variability within and among P. squamosissimus populations introduced in the upper Paraná River basin, and indicated that they likely originated from a common ancestor. Moreover, the data demonstrated that, in agreement with available historical records, the P. squamosissimus populations established in the Paraná River basin were derived from a population native to the Parnaíba River basin. The genetic data presented here are of potential future application for the management of the invasive P. squamosissimus populations and for the preservation of the genetic legacy of native fish.

Several human activities may result in or facilitate species introductions. In aquatic environments, species introductions are often associated with the construction of dams. In this study, we use reservoirs of the Neotropical region as a model to determine the main causes of fish species introductions. We compiled information on non-native fish species present in reservoir ichthyofauna surveys in the past 14 years and classified these species based on their probable reason for introduction (vector). Fish farming activities introduced approximately 7.6-fold more species in reservoirs than the other vectors identified. The matrix of the number of fish species per vectors explained the greatest proportion of the composition of non-native assemblages, whereas the geographic distance and age of the reservoir explained few of these variations. The non-native ichthyofauna composition varied among Neotropical basins and can be explained by the different sets of species introduced by the companies managing the reservoirs. Although power companies have banned stocking with non-natives, fish farming in the Neotropical region continues to use non-native species, and these species are occupying water bodies, especially reservoirs.

River pollution in Brazil is significant. This study aimed to evaluate the physico-chemical and genotoxic profiles of the Guaribas river water, located in Northeast Brazil (State of Piaui, Brazil). Two populations of Astyanax altiparanae (Garutti et Britski, 2000) of the Água dos Patos stream/SP and lake Igapó/PR were analyzed. All individuals showed 2n = 50, however, different karyotypic formulae were observed. The population of the Água dos Patos stream showed 8m +24sm+6st+12a (NF=88) and the population of lake Igapó, 8m+28sm+4st+10a (NF=90). Nucleolus organizing regions (AgNORs) were observed in the terminal position on the short and long arm of different chromosomes of both populations, showing a variation from 3 to 4 chromosomes. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) using 18S rDNA probes revealed only one pair of chromosomes with fluorescent signals in the terminal site on the short arm in the Igapó lake population, while the population of Água dos Patos stream showed 4 fluorescence terminal signals, characterizing a system of simple and multiple NORs, respectively. 5S rDNA fluorescent signals were detected in the interstitial position of a pair of chromosomes in the two studied populations. Some AgNOR sites revealed to be GC-rich when stained with Chromomycin A3 (CMA3), however, AT positive regions were not observed. The data obtained show that, despite the conservation of the diploid number and location of 5S DNAr, differences in both the distribution of 18S rDNA and karyotypic formula among the populations were found, thus corroborating the existing data on chromosome variability in Astyanax altiparanae that can be significant for cytotaxonomy in this group.

Brycon is one of the main genera of Neotropical freshwater fish. In Brazil, Brycon species have been found in many hydrographic basins, such as the Amazon, Paraná, Paraguay, and Araguaia-Tocantins basins. We examined the phylogenetic relationships among the species Brycon orbignyanus, B. hilarii, B. cf. pesu, B. cephalus, B. falcatus, and B. gouldingi, using mitochondrial and nuclear molecular markers. Specimens of B. orbignyanus were collected in the Paraná River. Specimens of B. hilarii were collected in the Manso River. Specimens of B. cephalus were obtained from a fish farm, and specimens of B. cf. pesu, B. falcatus and B. gouldingi were sampled in the Araguaia-Tocantins basin. DNA extraction was carried out using the phenol/chloroform method. Molecular polymorphism studies of Brycon species were carried out with the inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) technique, using the total DNA of six specimens of each species. In DNA amplification of B. cf. pesu, eight specimens were used. The partial sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome b was amplified by PCR. The PCR products were used directly in sequencing reactions. Each ISSR primer produced from 7 to 14 scorable and reproducible bands. The (GGAC)(3)A and (GGAC)(3)C primers produced the greatest number of species-specific bands. A 264-bp fragment, corresponding to the partial region of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b, was sequenced and used for analysis. According to the phylogenetic tree obtained from the data, these Brycon species can be divided into two clades: one comprised only B. cf. pesu, and the second comprised the remaining Brycon species. We conclude that ISSR primers can be used for the identification of species-specific bands in fish, such as Brycon spp.

The invasion process comprises not only the characteristics of nonindigenous species but also the attributes of the invaded environment which make it susceptible to the establishment of nonindigenous species. Habitat attributes operate like filters in determining the establishment of introduced species and the invasibility of a region. In the Upper Parana River Basin, Brazil, the practice of introducing species was quite common and frequently carried out by hydroelectric companies. The target species of the present study, the peacock-bass Cichla kelberi, is native to the Amazon Basin. This species was introduced into several reservoirs of the Upper Parana River Basin and is dispersing rapidly throughout the system. This study shows which characteristics of the reservoirs facilitate their invasibility after testing for the effect of propagule pressure. We conclude that a set of abiotic factors favors the invasibility of these reservoirs. To be more precise, the largest, deepest, most transparent and warmest reservoirs are the most likely to be colonized by Cichla kelberi. It is possible that other environments with similar characteristics to these reservoirs, such as the lagoons from the Upper Parana River Basin floodplain, can also be colonized by Cichla kelberi.

Brycon pesu is a small-sized fish distributed throughout the Amazon and Orinoco Basins and other coastal basins of northeastern South America. Brycon cf. pesu specimens from the Araguaia-Tocantins Basin are currently separated into two morphotypes, Brycon sp1 and Brycon sp2, owing to different coloration of their anal fin. Brycon sp2 has a reddish margin stripe on the anal fin which morphologically distinguishes it from Brycon sp1. In the present research, nuclear and mitochondrial markers were used to test the hypothesis that the Brycon sp1 and Brycon sp2 morphotypes are distinct species. Specimens from the two morphotypes were collected from the Lajeado Hydroelectric Plant and the Palmas River in the Araguaia-Tocantins Basin. Thirty-five loci obtained by the amplification of five inter-simple sequence repeat primers were analyzed but no species-specific bands were detected. Electrophoretic profiles obtained from 5S rDNA non-transcribed spacer amplification failed to show any differentiation in morphotypes. These results were corroborated by nucleotide sequence analysis of the mtDNA control region, in which 24 polymorphic nucleotide sites, representing a polymorphism rate of only 5%, were detected. The low rates of polymorphism detected by inter-simple sequence repeat, non-transcribed spacer and mtDNA D-loop markers strongly reject the hypothesis that the two morphotypes Brycon sp1 and Brycon sp2 represent distinct species within Brycon cf. pesu. Further studies are needed to obtain conclusive data on the notion that the coloration of the anal fin is an intraspecific polymorphism, possibly related to environmental factors.

Cytogenetic analyses of Bryconamericus aff. iheringii specimens from the upper Paraná River basin (State of Paraná, Brazil) are provided. They had 2n = 52 chromosomes and two cytotypes with variations in their karyotypic formulae: cytotype I with 12 metacentric, 18 submetacentric, 8 subtelocentric and 14 acrocentric chromosomes with a fundamental number (FN) of 90; cytotype II with 8 metacentric, 28 submetacentric, 6 subtelocentric and 10 acrocentric chromosomes with a fundamental number (FN) of 94. Differences in C- and G-band patterns between the cytotypes, distinguishing marker chromosomes for each karyotype, were reported. The R-band pattern by 5-bromodeoxyuridine incorporation was obtained in chromosomes of the cytotype II sample. In some metaphases, the second pair of submetacentric chromosomes is distinctive: its short arm is heterochromatic (positive C-band), corresponding to a late replication region. In the same cytotype, a G- and R-band size heteromorphism w as recorded in the long arm of pair 9 (submetacentric). These methodologies revealed an actual karyotypic differentiation in the B. aff. iheringii population analyzed. Morphometrical comparative analyses and a discussion of evolutionary aspects of chromosome diversification in species of this genus are provided as well.

The Paraná River is the second longest river in South America and the tenth largest river in the world in water discharge. The upper stretches are characterized by high human occupation and intense anthropogenic activities, and few areas are still in pristine conditions. Despite this, fish diversity is remarkably high in the upper Paraná River basin, and the existence of different habitats greatly influences fish biodiversity. Although most species are sedentary, migratory species are considered the most important, since they have historically sustained commercial and recreational fisheries. Recently, stocks of migratory species have diminished in many rivers due to overfishing and habitat modifications caused by dams. Impoundments have a long history in the basin and constitute the main source of impacts for both sedentary and migratory fish species. Government agencies have implemented management actions to mitigate the effects of damming on fish populations, which included fish stocking (using native and non-native species), the construction of transposition mechanisms and fishery control. However, their efficacy for conservation has been severely questioned and, in many instances, these actions have produced negative outcomes to biodiversity. The lack of studies and monitoring programs contributed to the uncritical adoption of some dubious management actions. Inevitably, management plans directed to conserve fish biodiversity in the basin need urgent revision.

Invasive and native populations of the Amazonian fishes 'peacock bass' Cichia monoculus and of a not yet described species 'blue tucunare' here referred as Cichla sp. 'Azul' were analysed for genetic diversity using the hypervariable domain of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region plus steady diagnostic random amplified polymorphic DNA loci. There is no detailed historical record of the introduction of Cichla species into the Upper Parana River basin, where they became invasive and a potential threat to local ichthyofauna. Genetic diversity among invasive populations confirmed the hypothesis of multiple introductions in this hydrographic basin. Moreover, a large and previously unknown population of natural fertile hybrids between C. cf. monoculus and Cichla sp. 'Azul' was identified in the Itaipu hydroelectric reservoir and in the floodplain of the Upper Parana River. Crossbred morphotypes were similar to C. cf. monoculus, but their morphological identification was not unequivocal. This hybrid population was characterized by high genetic diversity and it was composed of hybrids possessing concurrently nuclear DNA fragments specific for C. cf. monoculus as well as fragments specific for Cichla sp. 'Azul'. The nuclear DNA markers indicated that reproductive isolation between C. cf. monoculus and Cichla sp. 'Azul' has broken down in the new environment, and mtDNA sequences revealed that both species can be the female donor in the interspecific crosses. The data presented herein are potentially useful for future taxonomic, genetic and evolutionary studies in the complex Cichla group, for monitoring of invasive populations, and for further development of ecological guidelines.

Four sympatric and syntopic karyotype forms of Laetacara cf. dorsigera, centric fusion-originated were analyzed. Specimens with 2n=46, 2n=45, 2n=44 and 2n=43 chromosomes and differences with regard to the number of metacentric chromosomes, inversely proportional to their diploid number, were reported. Karyotypic formulae of the four cytotypes were: cytotype A=2M + 44A; cytotype B=3M + 42A; cytotype C=4M + 40A and cytotype D=5M + 38A and fundamental number constant (NF=48). Two centric fusion events are suggested: a) Robertsonian trans-location, which originated the first and second metacentric chromosomal pairs; b) isochromosome formed by the fusion of acrocentric homologous chromosomes in cytotypes with odd chromosomes. Whereas four species of the genus Steindachnerina occur in the Parana river basin, S. insculpta was the only endemic species of the region under analysis, which is the third lower section of the upper Parana river. Among other factors, this species has been characterised by the absence of spots in the basal region of the dorsal fin. However, various specimens with this characteristic appeared in the region after the construction of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant in 1982. An analysis of the genetic variability of Steindachnerina populations with or without spots is provided. Specimens were collected in different sites of the floodplain of the upper Parana river and samples were compared by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique and morphological analyses. Ninety-eight amplified loci with nine random primers were analysed in 19 specimens of each phenotype. Data for genetic distance showed great divergences between the two phenotypes and indicate two different species. Spotted specimens may be identified as S. brevipinna, found in the region downstream Sete Quedas Falls. The species must have overcome the geographical barrier during the building of the Itaipu hydroelectric dam that submerged the waterfalls and which became an obstacle between the upper and middle Parana river some 150 km downstream. Since phenotypes do not share dominant alleles, absence of gene flow has been suggested.

Cytogenetic data are given for 3 species of Auchenipteridae family. Auchenipterus nuchalis and Parauchenipterus galeatus were caught in the river Parana and Glanidium ribeiroi is an endemic species from the river Iguacu. The 3 species have 2n=58 chromosomes, albeit with differences in the karyotypic formulae. Changes in the karyotypic formulae associated with the same chromosome number suggest that the karyotypic evolution in the family may be related to nonRobertsonian changes. Pattern of heterochromatin distribution is similar to that in the majority of Siluriformes in which small blocks in the centromere and telomere regions occur. The nucleolus organizer regions (NOR) were detected in only one chromosome pair, a primitive condition in fishes. A. nuchalis and G. ribeiroi have NOR in interstitial position, a relatively rare condition in neotropical Siluriformes and shared by another 2 species of the Doradoidea superfamily.

Hoplias malabaricus, the common trahira, extended its range into the Iguaçu River sometime in the last decades. To determine levels of genetic differentiation in neighboring basins of this nominal taxon, as well as to unveil the source of the invading population, we analyzed patterns of similarity of RAPD-PCR genomic markers of samples from Paraná, Iguaçu and Tibagi Rivers. The high genetic diversity of samples from the Paraná and Tibagi Rivers suggested strong population structuring or even the occurrence of undescribed species. All alleles of the sample from the headwaters of Tibagi River were present in the sample from the Iguaçu River, which suggests that the former population or another population with similar genetic makeup, may be the source of the trahiras of the Iguaçu River.Hoplias malabaricus, a traíra, colonizou o Rio Iguaçu nas últimas décadas. Numa tentativa de determinar os níveis de diferenciação genética deste taxon nominal em bacias vizinhas, assim como a origem da população colonizadora, foram analisados os padrões de similaridade de marcadores genômicos do tipo randomly amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) de amostras dos rios Paraná, Iguaçu, e Tibagi. As amostras do Paraná e do Tibagi apresentaram elevados índices de diversidade genética, os quais sugerem a ocorrência de espécies diferentes nestes rios. Todos os alelos presentes na população da cabeceira do rio Tibagi ocorreram também na amostra do rio Iguaçu. Esta semelhança permite-nos sugerir que a população da cabeceira do rio Tibagi (ou alguma população com características genéticas semelhantes) possa ser a origem da população amostrada no rio Iguaçu.

Four species of Curimatidae, collected in lakes situated in the floodplain of the Miranda river (Pantanal-MS), were analyzed cytogenetically. Karyotypes of Curimatella dorsalis, sectrogaster curviventris and Steindachnerina brevipinna were characterized by 2n = 54 metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes, one pair of chromosomes bearing NORs in terminal position (46 M/8 SM and 13th, 42 M/12 SM and 20th, 48 M/6 SM and 17th, respectively). The first two species showed constitutive heterochromatin on the centromeric region of some chromosomes and in the other species heterochromatic blocks were observed on the centromeric and telomeric regions of a few chromosomes. The karyotype of Curimatopsis myersi showed 2n = 46 (42 M/4 SM), one pair bearing terminal NORs, representing the lowest diploid number for the family.

The effects of the duration of the floods on abiotic variables and attributes of species tolerant and intolerant to hypoxia (STH and SIH respectively) were evaluated in rivers and lakes of the upper Paraná River. Fish were sampled once a year, in six sampling stations, during the high water period from 2000 to 2003. There were overall reductions in dissolved oxygen levels and increases in transparency of water in lakes in years of moderate floods. The duration of floods influenced species differentially based on their tolerance to hypoxia: in moderate floods, richness of STH increased and numerical abundance and biomass of SIH reduced significantly. Opposite relationships were detected between dissolved oxygen and the attributes of STH and SIH. Dissolved oxygen was the best predictor of variability of STH and SIH in years of moderate floods, whereas water transparency predicted significant amounts of STH in years of short floods. Being positively affected by dissolved oxygen reductions, STH seem to take advantages in persisting in seasonally harsh lentic habitats. The incorporation of abiotic data as well the differential tolerance of species to hypoxia would improve further investigations of the effects of interannual variations in the flood pulse on tropical fish assemblagesOs efeitos da duração da cheia sobre algumas variáveis abióticas e atributos das assembleias de peixes (espécies tolerantes e intolerantes à hipóxia, STH e SIH, respectivamente) foram avaliados em rios e lagoas do alto rio Paraná. Os peixes foram amostrados uma vez ao ano, em seis localidades, durante o período de águas altas entre 2000 e 2003. Houve reduções generalizadas nos níveis de oxigênio dissolvido e aumentos na transparência da água em lagos em anos de cheias moderadas. A duração das cheias influenciou as espécies diferencialmente em função de sua tolerância à hipóxia: em anos de cheias moderadas, a riqueza das STH aumentou e a abundância numérica e de biomassa das SIH reduziram significativamente. Relações opostas foram detectadas entre o oxigênio dissolvido e os atributos das STH e SIH. O oxigênio dissolvido foi o melhor preditor da variabilidade de STH e SIH em anos de cheias moderadas, enquanto a transparência da água explicou uma significativa proporção das STH em anos de cheias curtas. Por serem positivamente afetadas pelas reduções no oxigênio dissolvido, as STH parecem ter vantagens em persistir em ambientes lênticos sazonalmente inóspitos. A incorporação de dados abióticos bem como da tolerância diferencial das espécies à hipóxia deve aprimorar as investigações dos efeitos das variações interanuais no pulso de inundação nas assembleias de peixes tropicais

The genetic divergence among invasive and native populations of Plagioscion squamosissimus from four Neotropical hydrographic basins was assessed using the hypervariable domain of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region. Plagioscion squamosissimus is native to the neighbouring hydrographic basins of the Parnaiba and Amazon Rivers, and the latter includes the Araguaia-Tocantins drainage, but it is invasive in other basins due to introductions. The mtDNA nucleotide polymorphism supported the hypothesis that the Amazon and Parnaiba populations constitute the same species and are separated into two independent evolutionary lineages. Absence of nucleotide polymorphism was observed within and among P. squamosissimus populations invasive to the uppper and middle Parana River basins. Nucleotide divergence was null or low comparing the Parana invasive populations with the populations native to the Parnaiba River basin, whereas it was significantly high compared to Tocantins populations. These results ascertain that P. squamosissimus populations invasive to the upper Parana River basin and to the middle Parana River basin downstream of the Itaipu dam are derived from the Parnaiba River basin. The genetic data presented are potentially useful to assist further studies on P. squamosissimus taxonomic and geographic distribution, development of ecological guidelines for managing populations invasive to the upper Parana River basin and for preservation of native fish diversity.

The morphological discrimination between the species Astyanax altiparanae and A. asuncionensis of the upper Parana River and Paraguay River basins, respectively, has always been difficult. Two D-loop haplogroups of A. altiparanae are known, one with the presence (AltoPR) or the absence (AltoPR-D) of a 32-bp block similar to that in A. asuncionensis. We examined these samples to characterize A. altiparanae and verify whether A. asuncionensis occurred in the upper Parana River prior to the submergence of the Sete Quedas Falls when Itaipu reservoir was impounded. D-loop sequences were analyzed in A. altiparanae of the upper Parana and Iguacu Rivers and those of A. asuncionensis of the upper Paraguay River. The haplogroup AltoPR was found at all sites of the upper Parana and Iguacu Rivers, whereas AltoPR-D occurred in the Itaipu reservoir, floodplain and in the Tiete and Grande Rivers. Two haplogroups of A. asuncionensis were identified and both did not have the 32-bp block. However, AltoPR and AltoPR-D differed from one another in 5.1% of their bases and between 8.9 and 12.5% with regard to the haplogroups of the upper Paraguay basin. Further, AltoPR-D occurred in the Grande River upstream the Marimbondo Falls and other older reservoirs than Itaipu. The results reject the hypothesis of the establishment of A. asuncionensis and suggest that the haplogroup AltoPR-D existed in the upper Parana River before the impounding of the Itaipu reservoir. Moreover, morphological similarity and high genetic variation within the altiparanae/asuncionensis group suggest the existence of a cryptic species complex.

Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Spix and Agassiz, 1829) and Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (Eingenmann and Eigenmann, 1889) are large migratory catfishes of high biological importance and great commercial value in South America. Because fertile crossbreeds can be artificially produced in hatcheries, a high genetic proximity between these two Pimelodidae species is conceivable. Possible escape of crossbred specimens from pisciculture stations is a serious environmental concern. Despite their importance, knowledge of P. corruscans and P. reticulatum biology, ecology, population diversity and genetics is limited. In the present work, the genetic divergence between P. corruscans and P. reticulatum populations from the Paraná River Basin was analyzed on the basis of polymorphisms in ISSR fragments and in the hypervariable sequence of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region. Estimates of intraspecific haplotype (h > 0.5) and nucleotide diversities (π < 0.01) indicate that P. corruscans and P. reticulatum have survived a historical population decline, followed by a demographic expansion. The interspecific polymorphisms within the mtDNA control region and ISSR fragments were suitable as diagnostic molecular markers and could be used to discriminate the two species. A unique Pseudoplatystoma specimen, captured in the Upper Paraná River Floodplain, was identified by these DNA diagnostic markers as a hybrid P. reticulatum x P. corruscans, which possibly escaped from pisciculture. The integrity of the natural population of P. corruscans in the Upper Paraná River is at risk of genetic introgression or homogenization due to the presence of hybrids and the transposition of P. reticulatum upstream through the Canal da Piracema at Itaipu Dam. Data presented herein improve the understanding of the genetic relatedness between P. corruscans and P. reticulatum and represent potential tools for future programs of conservation and surveillance of genetic introgression events and the genetic integrity of these populations. Pseudoplatystoma corruscans Spix e Agassiz, 1829 e Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum Eigenmann e Eigenmann, 1889 são peixes migratórios de grande porte, com alta importância biológica e elevado valor comercial na América do Sul. Híbridos férteis são obtidos em cativeiro e, portanto, é esperada alta proximidade genética entre essas duas espécies de Pimelodidae. Escapes de espécimes híbridos a partir de estações de piscicultura representam um sério problema ambiental. Apesar da sua importância, conhecimentos sobre a biologia, ecologia, diversidade de populações e genética de P. corruscans e P. reticulatum são escassos. No presente trabalho, foi avaliada a divergência genética entre P. corruscans e P. reticulatum da Bacia do Rio Paraná, com base em fragmentos ISSR e na seqüência D-loop do DNA mitocondrial (mtDNA). As estimativas das diversidades intra-específicas haplotípica (h > 0,5) e nucleotídica (π < 0,01) evidenciaram que P. corruscans e P. reticulatum sobreviveram a um declínio populacional histórico, seguido de expansão demográfica. Os polimorfismos interespecíficos no mtDNA e nos fragmentos ISSR foram eficientes para diagnósticos e discriminaram as duas espécies. Um espécime de Pseudoplatystoma capturado na planície de inundação do Alto Rio Paraná foi identificado com esses marcadores moleculares como híbrido P. reticulatum x P. corruscans, que possivelmente escapou de psicicultura. A integridade da população de P. corruscans no Alto Rio Paraná está ameaçada, por introgressão ou homogeneização genética, pela presença de híbridos e pela transposição para montante de P. reticulatum através do Canal da Piracema em Itaipu. Os dados apresentados constituem um avanço na compreensão do parentesco entre P. corruscans e P. reticulatum e representam ferramentas em potencial para programas de conservação biológica, incluindo o monitoramento de introgressão e de integridade genética das populações.

In this study, we identified and characterized the hydrographic attributes related to the success of recruitment of migratory fishes in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. To achieve our objectives, we analyzed inter-annual variations in the abundance of young-of-the-year (YOY; index of recruitment) of six migratory species and their relations with hydrographic attributes. Recruitment was related to the intensity, duration (in different fluviometrical levels), elasticity, number of pulses, greater uninterrupted overflow and delay of the floods (all obtained using the PULSO software). Collections of fish were conducted in the period between January 1987 and November 2007 in distinct environments (river channels, secondary channels and connected and disconnected floodplain lakes) distributed along three subsystems (Paraná, Baía and Ivinheima). Relations between recruitment and the attributes of interest were determined through analysis of covariance. In the studied period, the highest abundances of YOY were registered in 2007, followed by 1992, 1993, 2005 and 1988. The abundance of YOY was positively correlated with an intensity of high water levels (potamophase) and the duration of potamophase 1 and negatively with the duration of low water levels (limnophase) and a delay of flood. Higher hydrometric levels (540 and 610 cm for Paraná and 325 and 450 cm for Ivinheima) and greatest uninterrupted overflow presented different relations (significant interactions) among subsystems, but all with positive effects on recruitment. Results evidenced that recruitment responded better when floods started in January with potamophase intensities above 610 cm and water levels above 450 cm over a period of 50 days and repeated every two years (or > 610 cm for 38 days and repeated every two or three years). Therefore, artificial control of the floods at intervals of two or three years by manipulating the discharge of dams located upstream from the floodplain in a way that promotes potamophases with the potential to ensure recruitment of migratory species may become an important tool for conservation of migratory fish species in the floodplain.

The aim of this article is to evaluate whether alterations in flood pulses differentially affect diet composition, feeding niche breadth, and diet overlap of piscivorous fish. Species examined were Acestrorhynchus lacustris, Hoplias aff malabaricus, Plagioscion squamosissimus, Rhaphiodon vulpinus, and Salminus brasiliensis. These species were collected with gillnets (different mesh sizes) in the upper Parana River floodplain, during four distinct flood events (four periods; A = 1992/1993; B = 2000; C = 2001; and D = 2002). The volumetric method was chosen to express diet results. Feeding niche breadth was calculated using Levins measure, and diet overlap was evaluated by the Pianka’s Index. Flooding was more intense and lasted longer in the first period (1992/1993—A). Diet composition of the studied species was broad (47 total items consumed). For period A, Prochilodus lineatus was the main item taken by four out of five species. In the other periods, there were relevant alterations in diet, since P. lineatus was not recorded in any stomach of the five species; rather, it was replaced by the shrimp, Macrobrachium amazonicum. Diet overlap was low in all periods. The greatest overlap was obtained in period C for P. squamosissimus and R. vulpinus, due to high consumption of shrimps. There were no significant differences in niche breadth among species. However, the species presented distinct variation patterns in niche breadth. For example, H. aff. malabaricus showed a tendency toward increasing niche over the period, but the other species presented larger niches only during period A. Therefore, it can be concluded that the intensity and duration of the flood pulse influences: (i) the diet composition of piscivores; (ii) the breadth of their niches; and (iii) feeding overlap among species.

In this paper we evaluate plasticity of fish concerning diet. We expect that sampling over a large temporal and spatial scale, including environmental changes such as impoundments, will allow us to cover most of the diet plasticity. We also evaluate the efficacy of ordination method in discriminating trophic groups based on fish species diet. Data were obtained from 17 sampling stations sampled monthly from March/96 to February/99 in the Corumba river drainage, before and after the formation of the Corumba reservoir. Diet was determined analysing 9,177 stomach contents from 64 fish species. Trophic categories were discriminated by a non-hierarchic grouping analysis named k-means, applied to diet data. Most of the species presented great trophic plasticity, eating a great variety of food items. Resources availability, estimated from all fish stomach contents, was similar among environments, except in creeks, where it varied more with a large importance of terrestrial insects. K-means present satisfactory results, identifying nine trophic groups (detritivores, herbivore-piscivores, insectivore-herbivores, omnivores, invertivores, aquatic insectivores, piscivore-insectivores, piscivores and herbivores). Neste estudo avaliamos a plasticidade trofica em peixes. Nos esperamos que amostras obtidas com uma ampla escala temporal e espacial, incluindo mudancas ambientais como represamentos, nos permita cobrir a maior parte desta plasticidade. Foi avaliada tambem a eficiencia do metodo de ordenacao em discriminar os grupos troficos baseado na dieta das especies. As amostragens foram realizadas mensalmente de marco/96 a fevereiro/99 em 17 estacoes de coleta na bacia do rio Corumba antes e apos a formacao do reservatorio de Corumba. Foram analisados 9177 conteudos estomacais, pertencentes a 64 especies. As categorias troficas foram discriminadas atraves de uma analise de agrupamento nao hierarquica denominada K-means aplicada aos dados de dieta. A maioria das especies apresentou elevada plasticidade trofica, consumindo uma grande variedade de itens alimentares. A disponibilidade dos recursos alimentares, estimada atraves de todos os conteudos estomacais, foi similar entre os ambientes a excecao dos riachos, onde ocorreu maior heterogeneidade e os insetos terrestres tiveram grande importância. A analise K-means revelou resultados satisfatorios, identificando nove grupos troficos (detritivoros, herbivoro-piscivoros, insetivoro-herbivoros, onivoros, invertivoros, insetivoros aquaticos, piscivoro-insetivoros, piscivoros e herbivoros).

Whereas four species of the genus Steindachnerina occur in the Paraná river basin, S. insculpta was the only endemic species of the region under analysis, which is the third lower section of the upper Paraná river. Among other factors, this species has been characterised by the absence of spots in the basal region of the dorsal fin. However, various specimens with this characteristic appeared in the region after the construction of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant in 1982. An analysis of the genetic variability of Steindachnerina populations with or without spots is provided. Specimens were collected in different sites of the floodplain of the upper Paraná river and samples were compared by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique and morphological analyses. Ninety-eight amplified loci with nine random primers were analysed in 19 specimens of each phenotype. Data for genetic distance showed great divergences between the two phenotypes and indicate two different species. Spotted specimens may be identified as S. brevipinna, found in the region downstream Sete Quedas Falls. The species must have overcome the geographical barrier during the building of the Itaipu hydroelectric dam that submerged the waterfalls and which became an obstacle between the upper and middle Paraná river some 150 km downstream. Since phenotypes do not share dominant alleles, absence of gene flow has been suggested.

Astyanax fishes are among the most important food-web components of South America rivers. In the Iguaçu River basin, the Astyanax genus is represented mainly by endemic species. For millions of years, that hydrographic basin has been geographically isolated from the Paraná River basin by the Iguaçu Falls. Recently, a species from the Upper Paraná River basin identified as Astyanax bimaculatus was revised and described as a new species named Astyanax altiparanae Garutti & Britski, 2000. Fauna endemism and geographic isolation triggered interest in investigations to evaluate the identification and genetic relatedness among two A. altiparanae populations from the Upper Paraná River basin and the population identified as A. bimaculatus in the Iguaçu River, upstream from the Iguaçu Falls. Mitochondrial DNA sequences and RAPD markers revealed high genetic diversity within each population, as well as low genetic distance, high gene flow, and high mitochondrial DNA similarity among all three populations. In conjunction with morphological similarities, these results demonstrated that the population presently known as Astyanax bimaculatus in the Iguaçu River should actually be stated as Astyanax altiparanae. Furthermore, it could be inferred that the A. altiparanae population is not endemic and most likely it was recently introduced in the Iguaçu River basin, maintaining the ancestral genetic identity.
