Abstract

In order to fully validate “ITER-like” actively water cooled tungsten plasma facing units, addressing the issues of long plasma discharges, an axisymmetric divertor structure has been studied and manufactured for the implementation in the WEST (W-Tungsten Environment in Steady state Tokamak) tokamak platform. This assembly, called divertor structure and coils (4 m diameter, 20 t), is composed of two stainless steel casings containing an actively water cooled (up to 180 °C, 4 MPa) copper winding pack designed for a conductor current in the range of 12.5kA (up to 1000s). It must sustain harsh environmental conditions in terms of ultra-high vacuum, high temperatures and electrodynamic loads. One major difficulty is the assembly by induction brazing of individual bended conductor sectors inside the vacuum vessel and the consecutive sealing of the casings by TIG welding. Therefor development activities have been carried out on a scale one dummy coil, such as brazing, assembly, thermal cycling and electrical insulation tests (5 kV ground voltage). Whereas the brazing assembly technics and the conductor installation were validated without major difficulties, different technical solutions for the electrical insulation had to be tested. The chosen solution is a resin epoxy impregnated fiber glass fabric layered around the conductors followed by a polymerization procedure. In parallel the manufacturing of divertor structure components started in the second half of 2013 with a total delivery at the end of 2015. The paper will illustrate the technical developments which have been performed in order to fully validate the design. It concerns mainly the dummy coil and the complex conductor installation procedure assisted by virtual reality tools. The manufacturing methods proposed by industry in order to fulfil the technical requirements will be also addressed. Finally the processes and associated tools used in order to implement this large component inside the WEST vacuum vessel will be detailed.

Abstract

In order to fully validate “ITER-like” actively water cooled tungsten plasma facing units, the implementation of an axisymmetric divertor structure in the Tokamak Tore-Supra has been studied. With this major upgrade, the so-called WEST (Tungsten Environment in Steady state Tokamak), Tore-Supra will be able to address the issues of long plasma discharges using a tungsten divertor based on monoblock targets. The divertor structure and coils assembly are made up of two stainless steel casings containing a copper winding pack cooled by a pressurized hot water circuit (up to 180 °C, 4 MPa) in which a total divertor current of up to 16 × 13 kA is circulating in steady state. The conductor is electrically insulated and wedged inside the casing in order to be mechanically protected. The divertor which is designed to perform steady state plasma operation (up to 1000 s), must sustain harsh environmental conditions in terms of ultra light vacuum conditions, electromagnetical loads and electrical insulation (5 kV ground voltage) under high temperature (180 °C). Therefore, a feasibility study of such a complex structure has been performed. It implied activities on a scale one dummy coil, such as installation, assembly issues and representative tests (electric, thermal and hydraulic). The manufacturing of the divertor structure, which is a large assembly of 4-m diameter representing a total weight of around 20 tonnes, started in the second half of 2013 and is expected to be delivered by the end of 2014. The paper will illustrate the technical developments and tests performed during 2013 and beginning of 2014 in order to fully validate the design concept before the industrial phase. The manufacturing methods proposed by the contractor in order to fulfil the technical requirements will be also addressed.

Abstract

The WEST project recently launched at Cadarache consists in transforming Tore Supra in an X-point divertor configuration while extending its long pulse capability, in order to test the ITER divertor technology. The implementation of a full tungsten actively cooled divertor with plasma facing unit representative of ITER divertor targets will allow addressing risks both in terms of industrial-scale manufacturing and operation of such components. Relevant plasma scenarios are foreseen for extensive testing under high heat load in the 10–20 MW/m2 range and ITER-like fluences (1000 s pulses). Plasma facing unit monitoring and development of protection strategies will be key elements of the WEST program. WEST is scheduled to enter into operation in 2016, and will provide a key facility to prepare and be prepared for ITER.

Abstract

In order to fully validate actively cooled tungsten plasma facing components (industrial fabrication, operation with long plasma duration), the implementation of a tungsten axisymmetric divertor structure in the tokamak Tore-Supra is studied. With this major upgrade, so-called WEST (Tungsten Environment in Steady state Tokamak), Tore-Supra will be able to address the problematic of long plasma discharges with a metallic divertor target. To do so, it is planned to install two symmetric divertor coils inside the vacuum vessel. This assembly, called divertor structure, is made up of two stainless steel casings containing a copper winding pack cooled by a pressurized hot water circuit (up to 180 °C, 4 MPa) and is designed to perform steady state plasma operation (up to 1000 s). The divertor structure will be a complex assembly ring of 4 m diameter representing a total weight of around 20 tons . The technical challenge of this component will be the implementation of angular sectors inside the vacuum vessel environment (TIG welding of the coil casing, induction brazing and electrical insulation of the copper winding). Moreover, this complex assembly must sustain harsh environmental conditions in terms of ultra high vacuum conditions, electromagnetical loads and electrical isolation (13 kV ground voltage) under high temperature. In order to fully validate the assembly and the performance of this complex component, the production of a scale one dummy coil is in progress. The paper will illustrate, the technical developments performed in order to finalize the design for the call for tender for fabrication. The progress and the first results of the simplified dummy coils will be also addressed.

Abstract

The WEST (tungsten (W) Environment Steadystate Tokamak) project consists in the installation of 2 in-vessel coils into Tore Supra. To supply these new coils, a conceptual design of the new divertor coils power supplies was achieved in 2013. To validate power supplies topology (12 pulses thyristor bridges rectification) regarding their impact on the plasma control, detailed simulations have been performed based on a coupled Matlab Simulink / PowerSim (PSIM) software workflow. In Simulink, a linear model of the plasma position/shape evolution computed from the CEDRES++ equilibrium code and a feedback controller of the plasma position have been implemented. In PSIM, the divertor coils power supplies and circuits have been modelled. Based on this coupled model, this paper presents the study of the power supplies effects on the plasma vertical position, proposes the addition of filters to handle the power supplies ripple and finally validate the chosen topology.

Abstract

The main objective of the WEST project is to test the actively cooled tungsten plasma facing components under high flux conditions and to provide relevant information to ITER [1]. In this framework, two new power supplies will be installed in Tore Supra in order to feed the new upper and lower divertor coils. These new coils are installed inside the vacuum vessel to modify the magnetic configuration (X point) and to allow long pulse operation in H-mode.

7. 70 keV neutral hydrogen beam injector with energy recovery for application in thermonuclear fusion research

Abstract

A 70 keV 40 A hydrogen beam injector has been developed at Cadarache for a plasma diagnostic [motional Stark effect (MSE)] to provide a measurement of the plasma current distribution in the Tore–Supra tokamak. We present in this article the principle and the first experimental results of the injector, where a new type, and advantageous, energy recovery system, based on a magnetic neutralizer plasma confinement, has been developed. The hydrogen ion beam is accelerated to 70 keV with a three-grid multiaperture system (aperture diameter Φ=11 mm) with an ion current density of ≈160 mA/cm2. An ion source with a shape (height 1.2 m, width 80 mm) specifically adapted to the recovery system has been developed to meet the injector requirements: uniformity, high proton fraction (>80%), and high current density, ≈160 mA/cm2 over the whole extraction surface (900 cm2). A neutral (H0) beam power of 500 kW has been achieved with a divergence of ≈0.6° at 70 keV.

Abstract

International audience; Tore Supra routinely addresses the physics and technology of very long-duration plasma discharges, thus bringing precious information on critical issues of long pulse operation of ITER. A new ITER relevant lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) launcher has allowed coupling to the plasma a power level of 2.7 MW for 78 s, corresponding to a power density close to the design value foreseen for an ITER LHCD system. In accordance with the expectations, long distance (10 cm) power coupling has been obtained. Successive stationary states of the plasma current pro le have been controlled in real-time featuring (i) control of sawteeth with varying plasma parameters, (ii) obtaining and sustaining a `hot core' plasma regime, (iii) recovery from a voluntarily triggered deleterious magnetohydrodynamic regime. The scrape-off layer (SOL) parameters and power deposition have been documented during L-mode ramp-up phase, a crucial point for ITER before the X-point formation. Disruption mitigation studies have been conducted with massive gas injection, evidencing the difference between He and Ar and the possible role of the q = 2 surface in limiting the gas penetration. ICRF assisted wall conditioning in the presence of magnetic eld has been investigated, culminating in the demonstration that this conditioning scheme allows one to recover normal operation after disruptions. The effect of the magnetic eld ripple on the intrinsic plasma rotation has been studied, showing the competition between turbulent transport processes and ripple toroidal friction. During dedicated dimensionless experiments, the effect of varying the collisionality on turbulence wavenumber spectra has been documented, giving new insight into the turbulence mechanism. Turbulence measurements have also allowed quantitatively comparing experimental results with predictions by 5D gyrokinetic codes: numerical results simultaneously match the magnitude of effective heat diffusivity, rms values of density uctuations and wavenumber spectra. A clear correlation between electron temperature gradient and impurity transport in the very core of the plasma has been observed, strongly suggesting the existence of a threshold above which transport is dominated by turbulent electron modes. Dynamics of edge turbulent uctuations has been studied by correlating data from fast imaging cameras and Langmuir probes, yielding a coherent picture of transport processes involved in the SOL.

Abstract

The main results of the Tore Supra experimental programme in the years 2007–2008 are reported. They document significant progress achieved in the domain of steady-state tokamak research, as well as in more general issues relevant for ITER and for fusion physics research. Three areas are covered: ITER relevant technology developments and tests in a real machine environment, tokamak operational issues for high power and long pulses, and fusion plasma physics. Results presented in this paper include test and validation of a new, load-resilient concept of ion cycotron resonance heating antenna and of an inspection robot operated under ultra-high vacuum and high temperature conditions; an extensive experimental campaign (5 h of plasma) aiming at deuterium inventory and carbon migration studies; real-time control of sawteeth by electron cyclotron current drive in the presence of fast ion tails; ECRH-assisted plasma start-up studies; dimensionless scalings of transport and turbulence; transport experiments using active perturbation methods; resistive and fast-particle driven MHD studies. The potential role of Tore Supra in the worldwide fusion programme before the start of ITER operation is also discussed.

Abstract

A 70 keV 40 A hydrogen beam injector has been developed at Cadarache for a plasma diagnostic (MSE: Motional Stark Effect) to provide a measurement of the plasma current distribution in the Tore-Supra Tokamak. We present in this paper, the principle and the first experimental results of the injector, where a new type, and advantageous, energy recovery system, based on a magnetic neutraliser plasma confinement, has been developed. The hydrogen ion beam is accelerated to 70 keV with a three-grid multi-aperture system (aperture diameter /spl Phi/=11 mm) with an ion current density of /spl ap/160 mA/cm/sup 2/. An ion source with a shape (height 1.2 m, width 80 mm) specifically adapted to the recovery system has been developed to meet the injector requirements: uniformity, high proton fraction (>80%) and high current density, /spl ap/160 mA/cm/sup 2/ over the whole extraction surface (900 cm/sup 2/). A neutral beam power (H/sup 0/) of 500 kW has been achieved with a divergence of /spl ap/0.6/spl deg/ at 70 keV.

Abstract

The Neutral Beam Injection system of Tore Supra (six injectors, 100 keV — 40 A — D2 each) is the first one to be based on high power, long pulses injectors using the Electrostatic Energy Recovery concept. So far, the operation of this system has been difficult, since never experimented in full scale. To overcome this difficulty, a test bed, the ‘Bâti d'Essais des Lignes’ (BEL), has been put into operation at the beginning of 1995. Using the same facilities as those of the Tore Supra Injectors, it is dedicated to the injector qualification at nominal power, the injectors conditioning and the long pulse operation (≥ 30 s). The operation with Helium beams would be also possible by changing the pumping system. This paper describes this new facility and the diagnostics for the beam power inventory and the beam optics. Experimental data, such as beam optics and ion species from profile and Ha ray measurements, are also presented.

Abstract

The Tore Supra Neutral Beam Injectors are based on the recovery of the unneutralized fraction of the beam (Energy Recovery). Three out of the six injectors have been recently put into operation in the range of 15-22 A for the extracted current and of 60-80 keV for the beam energy. More than 1.5 MW have been injected into Tore Supra. The active and passive protections against breakdowns in the H.V. circuit have been improved. These modifications, as well as the first results of the injection into the Tore Supra plasma are presented.

Abstract

Équipe 107 : Physique des plasmas chauds; International audience; In parallel to the direct contribution to the procurement phase of ITER and Broader Approach, CEA has initiated research & development programmes, accompanied by experiments together with a significant modelling effort, aimed at ensuring robust operation, plasma performance, as well as mitigating the risks of the procurement phase. This overview reports the latest progress in both fusion science and technology including many areas, namely the mitigation of superconducting magnet quenches, disruption-generated runaway electrons, edge-localized modes (ELMs), the development of imaging surveillance, and heating and current drive systems for steady-state operation. The WEST (W Environment for Steady-state Tokamaks) project, turning Tore Supra into an actively cooled W-divertor platform open to the ITER partners and industries, is presented.
