1. A Deep uGMRT View of the Ultra-steep Spectrum Radio Halo in A521

Abstract

We present the first detailed analysis of the ultra-steep spectrum radio halo in the merging galaxy cluster A521, based on upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio telescope observations. The combination of radio observations (300–850 MHz) and archival X-ray data provides a new window into the complex physics occurring in this system. When compared to all previous analyses, our sensitive radio images detected the centrally located radio halo emission to a greater extent of ∼1.3 Mpc. A faint extension of the southeastern radio relic has been discovered. We detected another relic, recently discovered by MeerKAT, and coincident with a possible shock front in the X-rays, at the northwest position of the center. We find that the integrated spectrum of the radio halo is well-fitted with a spectral index of −1.86 ± 0.12. A spatially resolved spectral index map revealed the spectral index fluctuations, as well as an outward radial steepening of the average spectral index. The radio and X-ray surface brightness is well correlated for the entire and different subparts of the halo, with sublinear correlation slopes (0.50–0.65). We also found a mild anticorrelation between the spectral index and X-ray surface brightness. Newly detected extensions of the SE relic and the counter relic are consistent with the merger in the plane of the sky.

2. A Candle in the Wind: A Radio Filament in the Core of the A3562 Galaxy Cluster

Abstract

Using a MeerKAT observation of the galaxy cluster A3562 (a member of the Shapley Supercluster), we have discovered a narrow, long and straight, very faint radio filament, which branches out at a straight angle from the tail of a radio galaxy located in projection near the core of the cluster. The radio filament spans 200 kpc and aligns with a sloshing cold front seen in the X-rays, staying inside the front in projection. The radio spectral index along the filament appears uniform (within large uncertainties) atα' −1.5. We propose that the radio galaxy is located outside the cold front, but dips its tail under the front. The tangential wind that blows there may stretch the radio plasma from the radio galaxy into a filamentary structure. Some reacceleration is needed in this scenario to maintain the radio spectrum uniform. Alternatively, the cosmic ray electrons from that spot in the tail can spread along the cluster magnetic field lines, straightened by that same tangential flow, via anomalously fast diffusion. Our radio filament can provide constraints on this process. We also uncover a compact radio source at the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) that is 2–3 orders of magnitude

Abstract

Context. Pressure profiles are sensitive probes of the thermodynamic conditions and the internal structure of galaxy clusters. The intra-cluster gas resides in hydrostatic equilibrium within the dark-matter gravitational potential. However, this equilibrium may be perturbed; for example, as a consequence of thermal energy losses, feedback, and non-thermal pressure supports. Accurate measures of the gas pressure over cosmic time are crucial for constraining cluster evolution as well as the contributions from astrophysical processes. Aims. In this work we present a novel algorithm for deriving the pressure profiles of galaxy clusters from the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) signal measured on a combination of Planck and South Pole Telescope (SPT) observations. The synergy of the two instruments makes it possible to track the profiles on a wide range of spatial scales. We exploited the sensitivity of the Planck High-Frequency Instrument to the larger scales in order to observe the faint peripheries, and took advantage of the higher spatial resolution of SPT to solve the innermost regions. Methods. We developed a two-step pipeline to take advantage of the specifications of each instrument. We first performed a component separation on the two data sets separately in order to remove the background (CMB) and foreground (Galactic emission) contaminants. We then jointly fitted a parametric pressure profile model on a combination of Planck and SPT data. Results. We validated our technique on a sample of six CHEX-MATE clusters detected by SPT. We compare the results of the SZ analysis with profiles derived from X-ray observations with XMM-Newton. We find excellent agreement between these two independent probes of the gas pressure structure.

Abstract

We present LOw Frequency ARray observations of the Coma cluster field at 144\,MHz. The cluster hosts one of the most famous radio halos, a relic, and a low surface-brightness bridge. We detect new features that allow us to make a step forward in the understanding of particle acceleration in clusters. The radio halo extends for more than 2 Mpc, which is the largest extent ever reported. To the North-East of the cluster, beyond the Coma virial radius, we discover an arc-like radio source that could trace particles accelerated by an accretion shock. To the West of the halo, coincident with a shock detected in the X-rays, we confirm the presence of a radio front, with different spectral properties with respect to the rest of the halo. We detect a radial steepening of the radio halo spectral index between 144 MHz and 342 MHz, at $\sim 30^{\prime}$ from the cluster centre, that may indicate a non constant re-acceleration time throughout the volume. We also detect a mild steepening of the spectral index towards the cluster centre. For the first time, a radial change in the slope of the radio-X-ray correlation is found, and we show that such a change could indicate an increasing fraction of cosmic ray versus thermal energy density in the cluster outskirts. Finally, we investigate the origin of the emission between the relic and the source NGC 4789, and we argue that NGC4789 could have crossed the shock originating the radio emission visible between its tail and the relic., submitted to ApJ

Abstract

Complementarily to X-ray observations, the thermal SZ effect is a powerful tool to probe the baryonic content of galaxy clusters from their core to their peripheries. While contaminations by astrophysical and instrumental backgrounds require us to scan the thermal SZ signal across various frequencies, the multi-scale nature of cluster morphologies require us to observe such objects at various angular resolutions. We developed component separation algorithms that take advantage of sparse representations to combine these heterogeneous pieces of information, separate the thermal SZ signal from its contaminants, detect and map the thermal SZ signal of galaxy clusters from nearby to more distant clusters of the Planck catalogue. Spatially weighted likelihoods allow us in particular to connect parametric fittings of the component Spectral Energy Distribution with wavelet and curvelet imaging, but also to combine signals registered with beams of various width. Such techniques already allow us to detect sub-structures in the peripheries of nearby clusters with Planck, and could be extended to observations performed at higher angular resolutions.

Resume Sous l’egide de la Societe francaise de recherche et de medecine du sommeil (SFRMS), une journee de travail a ete consacree au syndrome d’apnees obstructives du sommeil (SAOS) de l’enfant. Un groupe multidisciplinaire de praticiens specialistes de cette pathologie (pneumologues, pediatres, otorhinolaryngologues, neurophysiologistes, specialistes du sommeil) a fait le point a travers leurs experiences et les donnees de la litterature sur la place des enregistrements electro-physiologiques dans le diagnostic du SAOS. Les criteres diagnostiques recommandes par l’American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), revises en 2012 et en 2014, sont exposes : methodologie des enregistrements de sommeil, definitions des evenements respiratoires et regles de codage visuel. Les criteres diagnostiques des troubles respiratoires du sommeil chez l’enfant sur les enregistrements polysomnographiques (PSG) et les recommandations de la Haute Autorite de sante sur les indications de la polysomnographie sont egalement rapportes. L’interet et les limites de la PSG en unite de sommeil, de la PSG ambulatoire et de la polygraphie ventilatoire (PV) sont decrits. Un arbre decisionnel a ete elabore dans le but de repondre au mieux au besoin diagnostique et de suivi de ces enfants.

We present a simultaneous analysis of galaxy cluster scaling relations between weak-lensing mass and multiple cluster observables, across a wide range of wavelengths, that probe both gas and stellar content. Abstract

The study of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) coronae embedded in noncool core (NCC) galaxy clusters is crucial to understand the BCG's role in galaxy cluster evolution as well as the activation of the self-regulated cooling and heating mechanism in the central regions of galaxy clusters. We explore the X-ray properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) of the NCC galaxy cluster MKW 08 and the BCG corona, along with their interface region. With recent and deep archival Chandra observations, we study the BCG corona in detail, and with archival XMM-Newton observations, we investigate the implications of the central active galactic nuclei (AGN) on the BCG. We carry out imaging and spectral analyses of MKW 08 with archival XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray observations. Our spectral analysis suggests the presence of a central AGN by a power-law with a photon index of $��$ ~ 1.8 at the core of its BCG. Although the ICM does not exhibit a cluster scale cool core, the BCG manifests itself as a mini cool core characterized by a cooling time as short as 64 Myr at r = 3 kpc centered at the galaxy. The isothermality of the BCG corona seems to favor mechanical feedback from the central AGN as the major source of gas heating. The gas pressure profile of this mini cool core suggests that the BCG coronal gas reaches pressure equilibrium with the hotter and less dense ICM inside an interface of nearly constant pressure, delimited by radii 4 < r < 10 kpc at the galactic center. As revealed by the presence of a metal enriched tail (Z ~ 0.5 - 0.9 Solar) extending up to 40 kpc, the BCG corona seems to be experiencing ram-pressure stripping by the surrounding ICM and/or interacting with a nearby galaxy, IC 1042.}, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 15 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

We present the joint analysis of the X-ray and SZ signals in A2319, the galaxy cluster with the highest signal-to-noise ratio in Planck maps and that has been surveyed within our XMM Cluster Outskirts Project (X-COP). We recover the thermodynamical profiles by the geometrical deprojection of the X-ray surface brightness, of the SZ comptonization parameter, and an accurate and robust spectroscopic measurements of the temperature. We resolve the clumpiness of the density to be below 20 per cent demonstrating that most of this clumpiness originates from the ongoing merger and can be associated to large-scale inhomogeneities. This analysis is done in azimuthally averaged radial bins and in eight independent angular sectors, enabling us to study in details the azimuthal variance of the recovered properties. Given the exquisite quality of the X-ray and SZ datasets, we constrain at $R_{200}$ the total hydrostatic mass, modelled with a NFW profile, with very high precision ($M_{200} = 9.76 \pm 0.16^{stat.} \pm 0.31^{syst.} \times 10^{14} M_\odot$). We identify the ongoing merger and how it is affecting differently the gas properties in the resolved azimuthal sectors. We have several indications that the merger has injected a high level of non-thermal pressure in this system: the clumping free density profile is above the average profile obtained by stacking Rosat observations; the gas mass fraction exceeds the expected cosmic gas fraction beyond $R_{500}$; the pressure profile is flatter than the fit obtained by the Planck collaboration; the entropy profile is flatter than the mean one predicted from non-radiative simulations; the analysis in azimuthal sectors has revealed that these deviations occur in a preferred region of the cluster. All these tensions are resolved by requiring a relative support of about 40 per cent from non-thermal to the total pressure at $R_{200}$., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures. Abstract

In this work we describe a possible way to use X-ray and microwave observations of nearby galaxy clusters to derive the value of the Hubble constant, that parametrises the expansion rate of the Universe. We provide a brief introduction to the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect that allows to detect galaxy clusters at microwave frequencies, and the method to combine it with X-ray observables. We emphasize what kind of considerations should be done when applying the method on real data and study the effect of the geometry of the clusters on the final result.

Abstract

The French Society of Research and Sleep Medicine (SFRMS) organized a meeting on obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in children. A multidisciplinary group of specialists (pulmonologists, ENT surgeons, pediatricians, neurophysiologists, sleep specialists) drew up a consensus document on the value of electrophysiological recordings in the diagnosis of OSAS in children. Technical considerations and recommended sensors, respiratory event definitions, and scoring criteria are presented according to the 2012 and 2014 recommendations of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Polysomnographic criteria for sleep-disordered breathing in children and the French National Authority for Health guidelines for indications of polysomnographic studies were reported. Relevance and limits of in-lab PSG, home PSG, and respiratory polygraphy were presented and guidelines were proposed to improve the diagnosis and follow-up of these children.

Abstract

We present two new examples of galaxies undergoing transformation in the Shapley supercluster core. These low-mass (stellar mass from 0.4E10 to 1E10 Msun) galaxies are members of the two clusters SC-1329-313 (z=0.045) and SC-1327-312 (z=0.049). Integral-field spectroscopy complemented by imaging in ugriK bands and in Halpha narrow-band are used to disentangle the effects of tidal interaction (TI) and ram-pressure stripping (RPS). In both galaxies, SOS-61086 and SOS-90630, we observe one-sided extraplanar ionized gas extending respectively 30kpc and 41kpc in projection from their disks. The galaxies' gaseous disks are truncated and the kinematics of the stellar and gas components are decoupled, supporting the RPS scenario. The emission of the ionized gas extends in the direction of a possible companion for both galaxies suggesting a TI. The overall gas velocity field of SOS-61086 is reproduced by ad hoc N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of RPS acting almost face-on and starting about 250Myr ago, consistent with the age of the young stellar populations. A link between the observed gas stripping and the cluster-cluster interaction experienced by SC-1329-313 and A3562 is suggested. Simulations of ram pressure acting almost edge-on are able to fully reproduce the gas velocity field of SOS-90630, but cannot at the same time reproduce the extended tail of outflowing gas. This suggests that an additional disturbance from a TI is required. Abstract

A521 is an interacting galaxy cluster located at z=0.247, hosting a low frequency radio halo connected to an eastern radio relic. Previous Chandra observations hinted at the presence of an X-ray brightness edge at the position of the relic, which may be a shock front. We analyze a deep observation of A521 recently performed with XMM-Newton in order to probe the cluster structure up to the outermost regions covered by the radio emission. The cluster atmosphere exhibits various brightness and temperature anisotropies. In particular, two cluster cores appear to be separated by two cold fronts. We find two shock fronts, one that was suggested by Chandra and that is propagating to the east, and another to the southwestern cluster outskirt. The two main interacting clusters appear to be separated by a shock heated region, which exhibits a spatial correlation with the radio halo. The outer edge of the radio relic coincides spatially with a shock front, suggesting this shock is responsible for the generation of cosmic ray electrons in the relic. The propagation direction and Mach number of the shock front derived from the gas density jump, M = 2.4 +/- 0.2, are consistent with expectations from the radio spectral index, under the assumption of Fermi I acceleration mechanism.

Abstract

A comparison is presented of Sunyaev-Zeldovich measurements for 11 galaxy clusters as obtained by Planck and by the ground-based interferometer, the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager. Assuming a universal spherically-symmetric Generalised Navarro, Frenk and White (GNFW) model for the cluster gas pressure profile, we jointly constrain the integrated Compton-Y parameter (Y 500) and the scale radius (θ500) of each cluster. Our resulting constraints in the Y500-θ500 2D parameter space derived from the two instruments overlap significantly for eight of the clusters, although, overall, there is a tendency for AMI to find the Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal to be smaller in angular size and fainter than Planck. Significant discrepancies exist for the three remaining clusters in the sample, namely A1413, A1914, and the newly-discovered Planck cluster PLCKESZ G139.59+24.18. The robustness of the analysis of both the Planck and AMI data is demonstrated through the use of detailed simulations, which also discount confusion from residual point (radio) sources and from diffuse astrophysical foregrounds as possible explanations for the discrepancies found. For a subset of our cluster sample, we have investigated the dependence of our results on the assumed pressure profile by repeating the analysis adopting the best-fitting GNFW profile shape which best matches X-ray observations. Adopting the best-fitting profile shape from the X-ray data does not, in general, resolve the discrepancies found in this subset of five clusters. Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of a delayed bedtime (3 a.m.), an advanced rising (3 a.m.), a sleep under placebo and under a hypnotic compound, i.e. 10 mg of Zolpidem (Stilnox®) on sleep structure and on the adaptations to a subsequent exercise in 8 male athletes. The chronology of these nights was randomized and each treatment administered in a double blind fashion. During each experimental night, subjects were monitored with conventional EEG/EOG/EMG polygraphic recordings. The next day, athletic performance was tested using a bicycle ergometer. A codified exercise was performed and consisted to a 10 min warm up followed by a 30 min steady state cycling corresponding to 75% of predetermined VO2 max. Then the work load increased progressively by steps of 10 W every minute until exhaustion. The recovery lasted 30 min. Abstract

The present study compared the effects of partial sleep deprivation and the effects of an intake of a hypnotic compound (zolpidem) prior to bedtime, on sleep and on hormonal and metabolic adaptations to subsequent exercise. Sleep deprivation consisted of a delayed bedtime and an early getting-up time. Eight young subjects, who slept well and were highly trained athletes, were enrolled in this study. Sleep was recorded polygraphically and the following afternoon exercise was performed on a cycle ergometer for 30 min at 75% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) after a 10-min warm up. Met-enkephalin, β-endorphin, cortisol, and lactate concentrations were measured at rest and during exercise. The data obtained after experimental sleep, with and without medication were compared with those obtained in the reference condition with normal sleep. Both types of sleep reduction decreased the total sleep time, stage 2 sleep, and rapid eye movement sleep, whereas zolpidem administration did not modify either the duration of sleep or the sleep stages. After the reference night, plasma met-enkephalin did not show any significant change at the end of the submaximal exercise, whereas β-endorphin, cortisol, and lactic acid concentrations increased significantly in all subjects. Abstract

We present a detailed optical analysis of the galaxy cluster A2163 based on new multicolor wide field imaging and medium-to-high resolution (R~2000) spectroscopy. While X-ray observations have revealed that merging processes are present in this cluster, the merging scenario is complex and not well-defined. We undertook a complementary optical analysis, aiming to understand the dynamics of the system, to add constraints to the merging scenario and to test its effect on the properties of galaxies. We provide a spectroscopic catalog of 512 new objects, where 361 galaxies are identified as cluster members. We derived estimates of the mean redshift and velocity dispersion: z= 0.2005 +/- 0.0003 and 1434 +/- 60 km/s, and performed a detailed dynamical analysis of unprecedented accuracy. We detected multiple evidences of merging events: i) strong subclustering in the galaxy density distribution, showing a main central component A2163-A, a northern one A2163-B, visible both in optical and in X-ray, and other substructures detected in optical, ii) bimodality in the density distribution for A2163-A, strong segregation between gaz and galaxies, and between galaxies of different luminosities, iii) low-density structures oriented along specific axes: mainly the EW direction, and the NS one, embedding the main substructures, iv) bimodality in the velocity distribution and a velocity gradient (~1250 km/s) along the NE/SW axis of the cluster. A2163 is exceptionally massive, with Mvir = 3.8 +/- 0.4 10**15 Msol/h70. Our analysis supports a scenario in which A2163-A has undergone a recent (t ~ 0.5 Gyr) merger along a a NE/SW (or E--W) axis, and A2163-B is connected to the main complex, probably infalling on A2163-A. Abstract

We present the analysis and results of a new spectroscopic and photometric survey of the central 1.5 4-5: a main cluster centered on the BCG (A3921-A), and a NW sub-cluster (A3921-B) hosting the second brightest cluster object. By comparing optical results to the X-ray analysis of XMM observations (Belsole et al. 2004), we find that A3921-B is tangentially traversing the main cluster along a SW/NE direction. Abstract

Context. About half of the baryons of the Universe are expected to be in the form of filaments of hot and low-density intergalactic medium. Most of these baryons remain undetected even by the most advanced X-ray observatories, which are limited in sensitivity to the diffuse low-density medium. Aims. The Planck satellite has provided hundreds of detections of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and is an ideal instrument for studying extended low-density media through the tSZ effect. In this paper we use the Planck data to search for signatures of a fraction of these missing baryons between pairs of galaxy clusters. Methods. Cluster pairs are good candidates for searching for the hotter and denser phase of the intergalactic medium (which is more easily observed through the SZ effect). Using an X-ray catalogue of clusters and the Planck data, we selected physical pairs of clusters as candidates. Using the Planck data, we constructed a local map of the tSZ effect centred on each pair of galaxy clusters. ROSAT data were used to construct X-ray maps of these pairs. After modelling and subtracting the tSZ effect and X-ray emission for each cluster in the pair, we studied the residuals on both the SZ and X-ray maps. Results. For the merging cluster pair A399-A401 we observe a significant tSZ effect signal in the intercluster region beyond the virial radii of the clusters. A joint X-ray SZ analysis allows us to constrain the temperature and density of this intercluster medium. We obtain a temperature of kT = 7.1 ± 0.9 keV (consistent with previous estimates) and a baryon density of (3.7 ± 0.2) × 10-4 cm -3. Conclusions. The Planck satellite mission has provided the first SZ detection of the hot and diffuse intercluster gas.

Most of the proposed architectures for interconnecting processors in parallel systems are based on graph topologies. Recently, one-to-many topologies based on the hypergraph theory have emerged, taking advantage of the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology that allows the huge bandwidth of optical fiber to be divided into several high-speed channels. One such channel can then be seen as a logical attribute shared among many processors. In this paper, we compare some hypergraph-based WDM lightwave networks in terms of simulated packet delivery time, average number of hops, link utilization, and throughput. We conclude that the bus-mesh, the hypertorus, and the stack-torus are very good candidates for implementing optical interconnection networks in future parallel systems.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the hormonal responses, which are dependent on the sleep wake cycle, to strenuous physical exercise. Exercise was performed after different nocturnal regimens: (i) a baseline night preceded by a habituation night; (ii) two nights of partial sleep deprivation caused by a delayed bedtime or by an early awakening; and (iii) two nights of sleep after administration of either a hypnotic compound (10 mg zolpidem) or a placebo. Eight well-trained male endurance athletes with a maximal oxygen uptake of 63.5 +/- 3.8 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) (mean value +/- s(x)) were selected on the basis of their sleeping habits and their physical training. Polygraphic recordings of EEG showed that both nights with partial sleep loss led to a decrease (P< 0.01) in stage 2 and rapid eye movement sleep. A delayed bedtime also led to a decrease (P < 0.05) in stage 1 sleep. Zolpidem had no effect on the different stages of sleep. During the afternoon after an experimental night, exercise was performed on a cycle ergometer. After a 10-min warm-up, the participants performed 30 min steady-state cycling at 75% VO(2-max) followed by a progressively increased workload until exhaustion. The recovery period lasted 30 min. Plasma growth hormone, prolactin, cortisol, catecholamine and lactate concentrations were measured at rest, during exercise and after recovery. The concentration of plasma growth hormone and catecholamine were not affected by partial sleep deprivation, whereas that of plasma prolactin was higher (P < 0.05) during the trial after an early awakening. Plasma cortisol was lower (P < 0.05) during recovery after both sleep deprivation conditions. Blood lactate was higher (P < 0.05) during submaximal exercise performed after both a delayed bedtime and an early awakening. Zolpidem-induced sleep did not affect the hormonal and metabolic responses to subsequent exercise. Our results demonstrate only minor alterations in the hormonal responses to exercise after partial sleep deprivation.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of a partial sleep deprivation on a subsequent supramaximal exercise evaluated from the 30 second Wingate test, and on the following recovery. To take into account the active muscle mass, the Wingate test was performed against a constant braking force related to the data of a force-velocity test conducted on a Monark cycle ergometer (Model 814 E with weights) one week before the experimental test. Eight highly trained athletes were enrolled for this study. The changes in ventilatory and metabolic responses were analyzed during and upon completion of physical 30 second exercise, taking place after two nights, in other words, after a reference night and after a night with reduced sleep. Partial sleep deprivation was obtained by delaying bedtime until 3 a.m. The 30 second Wingate test was performed between 9 a.m. and noon the following days, using a Monark ergometer (Model 814 F). The analyses of change scores disclosed that there were no main significant effects for measures of ventilation, lactates and pH(v) levels under the two experimental conditions. The peak power, the mean power output and the peak velocity recorded after partial sleep deprivation were not modified in comparison with the values obtained after the reference night. These findings suggest that acute sleep loss did not contribute to alterations in supramaximal exercise.

Abstract

We provide insight into the origin of the far-IR to mm emission from the Galaxy by presenting a decomposition of the emission where we separate the contributions from dust in the atomic gas and dust associated with quiescent molecular gas, as a function of Galacto-centric distance. We find that the sub-mm dust emissivity per hydrogen change by a factor 3 between the diffuse ISM and molecular clouds, first observed on localized clouds in the Solar Neighborhood, applies on large scale to the Molecular Ring. The decomposition leaves an emission excess in the sub-mm with a very cold effective temperature, concentrated in the plane but with a brightness independent of Galactic longitude. This emission might be associated with interstellar matter in the outer Galaxy not traced by H I nor CO emission.

Abstract

Successive releases of Planck data have demonstrated the strength of the Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) effect in detecting hot baryons out to the galaxy cluster peripheries. To infer the hot gas pressure structure from nearby galaxy clusters to more distant objects, we developed a parametric method that models the spectral energy distribution and spatial anisotropies of both the Galactic thermal dust (GTD) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which are combined with the cluster SZ and dust signals. Taking advantage of the best angular resolution of the High Frequency Instrument channels (5 arcmin) and using X-ray priors in the innermost cluster regions that are not resolved with Planck, this modeling allowed us to analyze a sample of 61 nearby members of the Planck Catalogue of SZ sources (, ) using the full mission data, as well as to examine a distant sample of 23 clusters (, ) that have been recently followed-up with XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. We find that (i) the average shape of the mass-scaled pressure profiles agrees with results obtained by the Planck Collaboration in the nearby cluster sample, and that (ii) no sign of evolution is discernible between averaged pressure profiles of the low- and high-redshift cluster samples. In line with theoretical predictions for these halo masses and redshift ranges, the dispersion of individual profiles relative to a self-similar shape stays well below 10% inside r500 but increases in the cluster outskirts. Abstract

The Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) effect is a promising tool for detecting the presence of hot gas out to the galaxy cluster peripheries. We developed a spectral imaging algorithm dedicated to the SZ observations of nearby galaxy clusters with Planck, with the aim of revealing gas density anisotropies related to the filamentary accretion of materials, or pressure discontinuities induced by the propagation of shock fronts. To optimize an unavoidable trade-off between angular resolution and precision of the SZ flux measurements, the algorithm performs a multi-scale analysis of the SZ maps as well as of other extended components, such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies and the Galactic thermal dust. The demixing of the SZ signal is tackled through kernel-weighted likelihood maximizations. The CMB anisotropies are further analyzed through a wavelet analysis, while the Galactic foregrounds and SZ maps are analyzed via a curvelet analysis that best preserves their anisotropic details. The algorithm performance has been tested against mock observations of galaxy clusters obtained by simulating the Planck High Frequency Instrument and by pointing at a few characteristic positions in the sky. These tests suggest that Planck should easily allow us to detect filaments in the cluster peripheries and detect large-scale shocks in colliding galaxy clusters that feature favorable geometry. Abstract

We present an initial study of the mass and evolutionary state of a massive and distant cluster, RCS2 J232727.6-020437. This cluster, at z = 0.6986, is the richest cluster discovered in the RCS2 project. The mass measurements presented in this paper are derived from all possible mass proxies: X-ray measurements, weak-lensing shear, strong lensing, Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect decrement, the velocity distribution of cluster member galaxies, and galaxy richness. While each of these observables probe the mass of the cluster at a different radius, they all indicate that RCS2 J232727.6−020437 is among the most massive clusters at this redshift, with an estimated mass of . In this paper, we demonstrate that the various observables are all reasonably consistent with each other to within their uncertainties. RCS2 J232727.6−020437 appears to be well relaxed—with circular and concentric X-ray isophotes, with a cool core, and no indication of significant substructure in extensive galaxy velocity data. Abstract

The hot plasma in galaxy clusters is expected to be heated to high temperatures through shocks and adiabatic compression. The thermodynamical properties of the gas encode information on the processes leading to the thermalization of the gas in the cluster's potential well as well as non-gravitational processes such as gas cooling, AGN feedback and kinetic energy. In this work we present the radial profiles of the thermodynamic properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) out to the virial radius for a sample of 12 galaxy clusters selected from the Planck all-sky survey. We determine the universal profiles of gas density, temperature, pressure, and entropy over more than two decades in radius. We exploit jointly X-ray information from XMM and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich constraints from Planck to recover thermodynamic properties out to 2 R500. We provide average functional forms for the radial dependence of the main quantities and quantify the slope and intrinsic scatter of the population as a function of radius. We find that gas density and pressure profiles steepen steadily with radius, in excellent agreement with previous observational results. Entropy profiles beyond R500 closely follow the predictions for the gravitational collapse of structures. The scatter in all thermodynamical quantities reaches a minimum in the range [0.2-0.8] R500 and increases outwards. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that pressure is substantially more scattered than temperature and density. Our results indicate that once accreting substructures are properly excised, the properties of the ICM beyond the cooling region R > 0.3 R500) follow remarkably well the predictions of simple gravitational collapse and require little non-gravitational corrections., 30 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables. Abstract

[Context]: About half of the baryons of the Universe are expected to be in the form of filaments of hot and low-density intergalactic medium. Most of these baryons remain undetected even by the most advanced X-ray observatories, which are limited in sensitivity to the diffuse low-density medium. [Aims]: The Planck satellite has provided hundreds of detections of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and is an ideal instrument for studying extended low-density media through the tSZ effect. In this paper we use the Planck data to search for signatures of a fraction of these missing baryons between pairs of galaxy clusters. [Methods]: Cluster pairs are good candidates for searching for the hotter and denser phase of the intergalactic medium (which is more easily observed through the SZ effect). Using an X-ray catalogue of clusters and the Planck data, we selected physical pairs of clusters as candidates. Using the Planck data, we constructed a local map of the tSZ effect centred on each pair of galaxy clusters. ROSAT data were used to construct X-ray maps of these pairs. After modelling and subtracting the tSZ effect and X-ray emission for each cluster in the pair, we studied the residuals on both the SZ and X-ray maps. [Results]: For the merging cluster pair A399-A401 we observe a significant tSZ effect signal in the intercluster region beyond the virial radii of the clusters. A joint X-ray SZ analysis allows us to constrain the temperature and density of this intercluster medium. We obtain a temperature of kT = 7.1 ± 0.9 keV (consistent with previous estimates) and a baryon density of (3.7 ± 0.2) × 10-4 cm -3. Conclusions. Abstract

We present the scaling relation between Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) signal and stellar mass for almost 260,000 locally brightest galaxies (LBGs) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). These are predominantly the central galaxies of their dark matter halos. We calibrate the stellar-to-halo mass conversion using realistic mock catalogues based on the Millennium Simulation. Applying a multi-frequency matched filter to the Planck data for each LBG, and averaging the results in bins of stellar mass, we measure the mean SZ signal down to M∗ ~ 2 × 1011 M⊙, with a clear indication of signal at even lower stellar mass. We derive the scaling relation between SZ signal and halo mass by assigning halo properties from our mock catalogues to the real LBGs and simulating the Planck observation process. This relation shows no evidence for deviation from a power law over a halo mass range extending from rich clusters down to M500 ~ 2 × 1013 M⊙, and there is a clear indication of signal down to M500 ~ 4 × 1012 M⊙. Planck’s SZdetections in such low-mass halos imply that about a quarter of all baryons have now been seen in the form of hot halo gas, and that this gas must be less concentrated than the dark matter in such halos in order to remain consistent with X-ray observations. Abstract

We report the discovery of large-scale diffuse radio emission South-East of the galaxy cluster MACS J0520.7-1328, detected through high sensitivity Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope 323 MHz observations. This emission is dominated by an elongated diffuse radio source and surrounded by other features of lower surface brightness. Patches of these faint sources are marginally detected in a 1.4 GHz image obtained through a re-analysis of archival NVSS data. Interestingly, the elongated radio source coincides with a previously unclassified extended X-ray source. We perform a multi-wavelength analysis based on archival infrared, optical and X-ray Chandra data. We find that this source is a low-temperature (~3.6 keV) cluster of galaxies, with indications of a disturbed dynamical state, located at a redshift that is consistent with the one of the main galaxy cluster MACS J0520.7-132 (z=0.336). We suggest that the diffuse radio emission is associated with the non-thermal components in the intracluster and intergalactic medium in and around the newly detected cluster. We are planning deeper multi-wavelength and multi-frequency radio observations to accurately investigate the dynamical scenario of the two clusters and to address more precisely the nature of the complex radio emission., Comment: 10 pages, 6 Figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

We present an analysis of Planck satellite data on the Coma cluster observed via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. Thanks to its great sensitivity, Planck is able, for the first time, to detect SZ emission up to r ≈ 3 × R500. We test previously proposed spherically symmetric models for the pressure distribution in clusters against the azimuthally averaged data. In particular, we find that the Arnaud et al. (2010, A&A, 517, A92) “universal” pressure profile does not fit Coma, and that their pressure profile for merging systems provides a reasonable fit to the data only at r < R500; by r = 2 × R500 it underestimates the observed y profile by a factor of ≃2. This may indicate that at these larger radii either: i) the cluster SZ emission is contaminated by unresolved SZ sources along the line of sight; or ii) the pressure profile of Coma is higher at r > R500 than the mean pressure profile predicted by the simulations used to constrain the models. The Planck image shows significant local steepening of the y profile in two regions about half a degree to the west and to the south-east of the cluster centre. These features are consistent with the presence of shock fronts at these radii, and indeed the western feature was previously noticed in the ROSAT PSPC mosaic as well as in the radio. Using Plancky profiles extracted from corresponding sectors we find pressure jumps of 4.9-0.2+0.4 and 5.0-0.1+1.3 in the west and south-east, respectively. Assuming Rankine-Hugoniot pressure jump conditions, we deduce that the shock waves should propagate with Mach number Mw = 2.03-0.04+0.09 and Mse = 2.05-0.02+0.25 in the west and south-east, respectively. Finally, we find that the y and radio-synchrotron signals are quasi-linearly correlated on Mpc scales, with small intrinsic scatter. Abstract

The survey of galaxy clusters performed by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect has already discovered many interesting objects, thanks to its full sky coverage. One of the SZ candidates detected inthe early months of the mission near to the signal-to-noise threshold, PLCKG214.6+37.0, was later revealed by XMM-Newton to be a triple system of galaxy clusters. We present the results from a deep XMM-Newton re-observation of PLCKG214.6+37.0, part of a multi-wavelength programme to investigate Planck discovered superclusters. The characterisation of the physical properties of the three components has allowed us to build a template model to extract the total SZ signal of this system with Planck data. We have partly reconciled the discrepancy between the expected SZ signal derived from X-rays and the observed one, which are now consistent within 1.2σ. We measured the redshift of the three components with the iron lines in the X-ray spectrum, and confirm that the three clumps are likely part of the same supercluster structure. Abstract

Background: Sleep and its architecture are affected and changing through the whole lifespan. We know main modifications of the macro-architecture with a shorter sleep, occurring earlier and being more fragmented. We have been studying sleep micro-architecture through its pathological modification in sleep, psychiatric or neurocognitive disorders whereas we are still unable to say if the sleep micro-architecture of an old and very old person is rather normal, under physiological changes, or a concern for a future disorder to appear. We wanted to evaluate age-related changes in sleep spindle characteristics in individuals over 75 years of age compared with younger individuals., Methods: This was an exploratory study based on retrospective and comparative laboratory-based polysomnography data registered in the normal care routine for people over 75 years of age compared to people aged 65-74 years. We were studying their sleep spindle characteristics (localization, density, frequency, amplitude, and duration) in the N2 and N3 sleep stages. ANOVA and ANCOVA using age, sex and OSA were applied., Results: We included 36 participants aged > 75 years and 57 participants aged between 65 and 74 years. An OSA diagnosis was most common in both groups. Older adults receive more medication to modify their sleep. Spindle localization becomes more central after 75 years of age. Changes in the other sleep spindle characteristics between the N2 and N3 sleep stages and between the slow and fast spindles were conformed to literature data, but age was a relevant modifier only for density and duration., Conclusion: We observed the same sleep spindle characteristics in both age groups except for localization. We built our study on a short sample, and participants were not free of all sleep disorders. We could establish normative values through further studies with larger samples of people without any sleep disorders to understand the modifications in normal aging and pathological conditions and to reveal the predictive biomarker function of sleep spindles., (© 2024. Abstract

Background: Up to 70% of breast cancer patients report symptoms of insomnia during and after treatment. Despite the ubiquity of insomnia symptoms, they are under-screened, under-diagnosed and poorly managed in breast cancer patients. Sleep medications treat symptoms but are ineffective to cure insomnia. Other approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, relaxation through yoga and mindfulness are often not available for patients and are complex to implement. An aerobic exercise program could be a promising treatment and a feasible option for insomnia management in breast cancer patients, but few studies have investigated the effects of such a program on insomnia., Methods: This multicenter, randomized clinical trial evaluate the effectiveness of a moderate to high intensity physical activity program (45 min, 3 times per week), lasting 12 weeks, in minimizing insomnia, sleep disturbances, anxiety/depression, fatigue, and pain, and in enhancing cardiorespiratory fitness. Patients with breast cancer be recruited from six hospitals in France and randomly allocated to either the "training" or the "control" group. Baseline assessments include questionnaires [Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire (PSQI), Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)], home polysomnography (PSG), and 7-day actigraphy coupled with completion of a sleep diary. Assessments are repeated at the end of training program and at six-month follow-up., Discussion: This clinical trial will provide additional evidence regarding the effectiveness of physical exercise in minimizing insomnia during and after chemotherapy. This study aimed to assess the effects of a phase advance before a 7-hour eastward flight followed by a strategy of resynchronization at destination on sleep and physical performance in professional mountain bikers. Six athletes participated in this study divided into 4 periods: (i) baseline (usual sleep-wake rhythm); (ii) phase advance (advance sleep-wake schedules of 3 hours for 6 days); (iii) travel (flight: Paris-Tokyo); and (iv) phase adjustment (resynchronization of sleep-wake schedules). Melatonin pills and light therapy were administrated during the phase advance and phase adjustment. Sleep was recorded by polysomnography and actigraphy, core body temperature (CBT) rhythm was assessed by ingestible capsules, and physical performances were tested by the Wingate and 5-minute maximal exercise tests. Results showed that bedtime was advanced by 2.9 hours at the end of the phase advance ( p ≤ 0.01) with a batyphase of CBT advanced by 2.5 hours ( p = 0.07). Bedtime was similar at destination compared with baseline. Total sleep time and sleep composition were unchanged at the end of the phase advance or at destination, compared with baseline. Physical performances were maintained after phase advance and at destination. The phase advance enabled to preshift part of the time zones without disturbing sleep and physical performances and contributed to preserving them once at destination. Background: Despite growing interest in athletes' sleep, few studies have focused on professional athletes, especially in individual sports. Moreover, limited investigations included female athletes. This study aimed to evaluate sleep chronotype, as well as objective and subjective sleep characteristics in male and female professional cross-country mountain bikers., Methods: Thirteen athletes (7 males and 6 females) of the French national team took part in this study. The Chronotype was assessed by the Horne and Östberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire and sleep by actigraphy for one month, by ambulatory polysomnography (PSG) for one night and by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index., Results: Most athletes (77%) are classified as moderately morning type and a minority of athletes (23%) are intermediate type. Athletes sleep on average 8 hours per night and during the night recorded by PSG, N3 and REM sleep stages represented 21.2±3.4% and 20.9±3.1% of the total sleep time, respectively. These good sleep parameters were confirmed by subjective data with 77% good sleepers. Except the poorer subjective sleep quality in female athletes (5.7±1.6) compared to male athletes (2.6±1.7, P<0.05), no significant sex difference was found for all characteristics evaluated., Conclusions: The professional status of these athletes and the organization of mountain bike calendar may explain their good sleep characteristics.

45. Detection of anti-correlation of hot and cold baryons in galaxy clusters.

Abstract

The largest clusters of galaxies in the Universe contain vast amounts of dark matter, plus baryonic matter in two principal phases, a majority hot gas component and a minority cold stellar phase comprising stars, compact objects, and low-temperature gas. Hydrodynamic simulations indicate that the highest-mass systems retain the cosmic fraction of baryons, a natural consequence of which is anti-correlation between the masses of hot gas and stars within dark matter halos of fixed total mass. We report observational detection of this anti-correlation based on 4 elements of a 9 × 9-element covariance matrix for nine cluster properties, measured from multi-wavelength observations of 41 clusters from the Local Cluster Substructure Survey. These clusters were selected using explicit and quantitative selection rules that were then encoded in our hierarchical Bayesian model. Our detection of anti-correlation is consistent with predictions from contemporary hydrodynamic cosmological simulations that were not tuned to reproduce this signal.

46. Emerging psychiatric disorders in Kleine-Levin syndrome.

Abstract

In Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS), episodes of hypersomnia and cognitive, psychiatric and behavioural disturbances alternate with asymptomatic periods in adolescents. We evaluated whether psychiatric disorders would emerge during asymptomatic periods in a naturalistic, uncontrolled clinical cohort. Patients with primary KLS underwent psychiatric interviews at diagnosis and every year for 1-10 years, leading to diagnosis of former and present comorbid psychiatric disorders. Among the 115 patients (65.2% male and aged 16.1 ± 4.8 years at KLS onset), 19 (16.5%) had a history of psychiatric disorder prior to KLS onset, which persisted afterwards in 10. Twenty-five (21%) patients developed a new, comorbid psychiatric disorder 1-6 years after KLS onset, during 'asymptomatic' periods, including mood disorders (n = 14; including major depressive episodes, n = 8; recurrent depressive episodes, n = 2; bipolar I disorder, n = 1; dysthymic disorder, n = 1; adjustment disorder with depressive mood, n = 1; and mood disorder not otherwise specified, n = 1), anxiety disorders (n = 7), eating disorders (n = 2), psychotic disorders not otherwise specified (n = 2), schizoaffective disorder (n = 1) and cannabis dependence (n = 1). Six patients attempted suicide: two before and two after KLS onset, and two during episodes. Female sex, longer disease course, longer time incapacitated (356 ± 223 versus 155 ± 186 days) and more frequent psychiatric symptoms during episodes (but no family or personal history of psychiatric disorders) were associated with emerging psychiatric disorders. Contrary to the alleged benignity of KLS and normality between episodes, one KLS patient in five suffers from emerging psychiatric disorders. Abstract

Post-lunch sleepiness belongs to biological rhythms. Athletes take a nap to counteract afternoon circadian nadir, in prevision of disturbed sleep. This study examined the effects of brief post-lunch nap on vigilance in young and healthy athletes. The P300 components, physiological and cognitive performances were assessed either after nap or rest, following a night of normal sleep (NSC) or simulated jet lag condition (5-h advance-JLC). P300 wave is the positive deflection at about 300 ms in response to a rare stimulus, representing higher information processing. P300 amplitude reflects the amount of attention allocated whereas P300 latency reflects time spent on stimulus classification. P300 amplitude was significantly increased (Fz:11.14±3.0vs9.05±3.2 µV; p<0.05) and P300 latency was shorter (Pz:327.16±18.0vs344.90±17.0 ms; p<0.01) after nap in NSC. These changes were accompanied by lower subjective sleepiness (19.7±9.6vs27.5±16.5; p<0.05) and decrease in mean reaction times (MRT: divided attention, 645.1±74.2vs698±80.4 ms; p<0.05). In contrast, in JLC, only P300 amplitudes (Fz:10.30±3.1vs7.54±3.3 µV; p<0.01 and Cz: 11.48±3.1vs9.77±3.6 µV; p<0.05) increased but P300 latencies or MRT did not improve. These results indicated improvements in speed of stimulus evaluation time. Napping positively impacts on cognitive processing, especially when subjects are on normal sleep schedules. Abstract

The French Society of Research and Sleep Medicine (SFRMS) organized a meeting on obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in children. A multidisciplinary group of specialists (pulmonologists, ENT surgeons, pediatricians, neurophysiologists, sleep specialists) drew up a consensus document on the value of electrophysiological recordings in the diagnosis of OSAS in children. Technical considerations and recommended sensors, respiratory event definitions, and scoring criteria are presented according to the 2012 and 2014 recommendations of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Polysomnographic criteria for sleep-disordered breathing in children and the French National Authority for Health guidelines for indications of polysomnographic studies were reported. Relevance and limits of in-lab PSG, home PSG, and respiratory polygraphy were presented and guidelines were proposed to improve the diagnosis and follow-up of these children., (Copyright © 2016. Abstract

Travel across time zones causes jet lag and is accompanied by deleterious effects on sleep and performance in athletes. These poor performances have been evaluated in field studies but not in laboratory conditions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, in athletes, the impact of 5-h phase advance on the architecture of sleep and physical performances (Wingate test). In a sleep laboratory, 16 male athletes (age: 22.2 ± 1.7 years, height: 178.3 ± 5.6 cm, body mass: 73.6 ± 7.9 kg) spent 1 night in baseline condition and 2 nights, 1 week apart, in phase shift condition recorded by electroencephalography to calculate sleep architecture variables. For these last 2 nights, the clock was advanced by 5 h. Core body temperature rhythm was assessed continuously. The first night with phase advance decreased total sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency, stage 2 of nonrapid eye movement (N2), and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep compared with baseline condition, whereas the second night decreased N2 and increased slow-wave sleep and REM, thus improving the quality of sleep. After phase advance, mean power improved, which resulted in higher lactatemia. Acrophase and bathyphase of temperature occurred earlier and amplitude decreased in phase advance but the period was not modified. These results suggest that a simulated phase shift contributed to the changes in sleep architecture, but did not significantly impair physical performances in relation with early phase adjustment of temperature to the new local time.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine the effects of a post-prandial 20 min nap on a short-term physical exercise and subsequent sleep in athletes keeping their usual sleep schedules and in 5-h phase-advance condition., Methods: Sixteen healthy young male athletes (age 22.2 ± 1.7 years, non-habitual nappers) participated in the study. After a baseline 8-h time in bed in normal and 5-h advanced sleep schedules, a standardized morning and lunch in a laboratory environment, subjects underwent either a nap (20 min of sleep elapsed from 3 epochs of stage 1 or 1 epoch of stage 2), or a rest without sleep by lying in a bed, between 13:00 and 14:00 hours in non-shifted condition or 08:00 and 09:00 hours in shifted condition, after which anaerobic exercises were performed twice 2 h apart. Core body temperature was recorded throughout the study period., Results: The nap extended sleep onset latency from 6.72 ± 3.83 to 11.84 ± 13.44 min, after shifted condition but did not modify sleep architecture of the post-trial night among athletes, whether shifted or not. Moreover, napping did not improve physical performance but it delayed acrophase and batyphase of core body temperature rhythm parameters., Conclusion: Napping showed no reliable benefit on short-term performances of athletes exercising at local time or after a simulated jet lag.
