Abstract

Summary It is common during the exploration phase or at the early stage of a field development to work with a few of or even no well data, with uncertain Time or Velocity maps and with doubts about fault location. Lack of data and uncertain data decrease the robustness Depth-converted structural maps used in estimation of the field economic potential. Geostatistical methods developed in the framework of the UncerTZ RD Stochastic conditional simulations allow integrating uncertainty on Time or Velocity maps and on fault location. They also allow quantifying the global uncertainty resulting from all the uncertainties on data. With these methods, it is possible to get usable results from which the uncertainty on extension and volumes of petroleum traps can be estimated, allowing stakeholders to take the most appropriate decisions about field development.

Abstract

Summary The structurally lowest point in a hydrocarbon trap that can retain hydrocarbons is called a Spill Point and characterizing these locations over a depth horizon is a common approach in trap analysis. However, a horizon is an uncertain object typically produced through a time to depth conversion procedure which might involve several different variables like time, velocity, and fault position. Each of those variables brings its own uncertainty. By using geostatistical simulations, we produce different realizations of the depth horizons and further process them individually to determine the probability of presence of reservoirs and spill points associated to highly probable reservoirs. This paper presents a methodology to achieve such results including our analysis algorithm for trap and spill point characterization. By using a case-study we demonstrate that only proper characterization of all relevant realizations in the uncertainty space show us the possible scenarios, and their impact on traps volume.

Abstract

Summary Faults are objects interpreted from seismic data that are often difficult to characterize. Not only the type of a fault can appear different depending on the domain the modeler is working on (time or depth), but accurate shape mapping often extends below the level of coherent seismic data. This proves especially impactful when we consider that simple errors in the fault-network characterization can render a subsurface model useless in terms of its flow properties and provide erroneous values for volumes of reserves. Nevertheless, in absence of proper technology, depth conversion workflows do not account for fault uncertainties, instead relying on a single deterministic interpretation. This paper presents a new methodology that considers positional fault uncertainty in time-to-depth conversion workflows. By considering different realizations of a fault, the target surface is dynamically adapted to this new position and can be used to update further volumetric computations. The proposed methodology can be fully automated and results in a more complete exploration of the uncertainty space regarding fault interpretation.

Abstract

To optimize hydrocarbons recovery and quantify future production risks, it is necessary to accurately characterize traps geometry. This geometry is estimated from both seismic and well data, using Time-Depth conversion methods. This characterization is a critical issue in reservoirs with thin beds, as the uncertainty on horizons depth can lead to large variations of beds thickness. The paper presents an application on real data of a new Time-Depth conversion integrated workflow which is based on advanced geostatistical estimation and simulation multivariate algorithms and on automatic Spill Point recognition. It enhances horizons depth estimation and minimizes the uncertainty on the consecutive horizons. This workflow is extremely efficient in faulted layer-cake deposits, especially when reservoirs are thin. First, the theoretical background of the geostatistical multivariate algorithm is briefly summarized, including its version in the Bayesian framework. Then, the application example is used to highlight the differences between the simultaneous conversion of consecutive horizons and the standard conversion where horizons are considered as independent to each other. Focus is put on the vertical evolution of uncertainty and on the Geophysicist input allowed by the Bayesian framework. The workflow is versatile enough to convert directly Time in Depth or to compute intermediate enhanced velocity models when required. Practical examples are presented to illustrate the characteristics of each method. The impact of the different conversion options on Spill Points location and on the reservoirs Gross Rock Volumes are highlighted. One of the most original and useful features of the workflow is its ability to include faults location uncertainty in the global Gross Rock Volumes uncertainty quantification. The implementation of this capability is explained and illustrated from its application to real data. In the end, the impact on ultimate recovery uncertainty is analyzed and illustrated from a practical case study.

Abstract

In immunocompromised patient, parapoxvirus infection can be extensively necrotic and recurrent evolution. We describe a case of Orf nodule in a liver transplanted woman. We will consider the therapeutic options in case of infections by parapox in immunosuppressive patients, as described in the medical literature. In our specific case, local application of cidofovir (concentration of 1 %) together with local antiseptic solution, povidone iodine, led to complete remission of the lesion without any sign of toxicity. Finally, we will consider the therapeutic use of local cidofovir.

Abstract

Factorial kriging or kriging with filtering (Matheron, 1982) is used on post-stack or pre-stack seismic dataset to filter out unwanted components from the seismic signal. To account for non-stationarity that is often encountered within seismic data sets, kriging parameters can be locally set using Local Geo-Statistics (LGS) or M-GS (Moving-GeoStatistics) (Magneron, 2009). There are several approaches to compute the optimized parameters; local variogram parameters in adjacent areas, automatic cross-validation techniques and morphological analysis. The paper focuses on the latter approach. The idea is to determine some interesting characteristics of a seismic image that should then be transformed to local kriging parameters for the variogram model and the neighbourhood extension. Mathematical morphology techniques provide a set of tools to analyse the image, however they are not well known by geophysicists who are more familiar with seismic attributes. A seismic attribute is a quantity extracted or derived from seismic data that can be analysed in order to enhance information of a seismic image. The advantage of using seismic attributes is that they are available on common geophysical interpretation software packages. Surprisingly there is no much reference of the application of such attributes to derive the local parameters of the geostatistical filters.

Abstract

The reconstruction of photons in the ATLAS detector is studied with data taken during the 2004 Combined Test Beam, where a full slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to beams of particles of known energy at the CERN SPS. The results presented show significant differences in the longitudinal development of the electromagnetic shower between converted and unconverted photons as well as in the total measured energy. The potential to use the reconstructed converted photons as a means to precisely map the material of the tracker in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter is also considered. All results obtained are compared with a detailed Monte-Carlo simulation of the test-beam setup which is based on the same simulation and reconstruction tools as those used for the ATLAS detector itself.

Abstract

A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed and successfully applied to beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of energy deposits in the calorimeter layers, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the calorimeters of the ATLAS experiment were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. For pion beams with energies between 20GeV and 180GeV, the particle energy is reconstructed within 3% and the energy resolution is improved by between 11% and 25% compared to the resolution at the electromagnetic scale. © 2011 CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration, published under license by IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

Abstract

A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the results of the measurements of the response of the barrel calorimeter to hadrons with energies in the range 20350 GeV and beam impact points and angles corresponding to pseudo-rapidity values in the range 0.20.65 are reported. The results are compared to the predictions of a simulation program using the Geant 4 toolkit. © 2010 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

In 2004 at the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) combined test beam, one slice of the ATLAS barrel detector (including an Inner Detector set-up and the Liquid Argon calorimeter) was exposed to particles from the H8 SPS beam line at CERN. It was the first occasion to test the combined electron performance of ATLAS. This paper presents results obtained for the momentum measurement p with the Inner Detector and for the performance of the electron measurement with the LAr calorimeter (energy E linearity and resolution) in the presence of a magnetic field in the Inner Detector for momenta ranging from 20 GeV/c to 100 GeV/c. Furthermore the particle identification capabilities of the Transition Radiation Tracker, Bremsstrahlungs-recovery algorithms relying on the LAr calorimeter and results obtained for the E/p ratio and a way how to extract scale parameters will be discussed. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

Abstract

A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS central detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the response of the central calorimeters to pions with energies in the range between 3 and 9 GeV is presented. The linearity and the resolution of the combined calorimetry (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters) was measured and compared to the prediction of a detector simulation program using the toolkit Geant 4. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Skiing is very popular in France, although people have basically been poorly informed on the standards of setting bindings and the necessity of their application. For the past ten years the results of the MDM epidemiological network have put forward beyond doubt that the number of knee injuries has increased, especially in the female population. These findings have motivated a work group of the AFNOR to suggest an improvement of the ISO norm 11088 for binding adjustments; a documentation leaflet was published under the number FD S 52-748. Because in France the actual international standards were badly applied or simply unknown, a large information campaign was launched aiming skiers and ski equipment renters. For the mass public campaign: A television spot of 30 seconds and 1 000 000 documentation leaflets were distributed. A specific information campaign was aimed at the ski equipment renters. The desire to lower the great number of ACL njuries, particularly in women, by distributing these modern adjustment tables has put forward the lack of awareness of the ISO standards. Only 4,4 % [9 of 204 interviewees] were able to give the 4 fundamental criteria of the AFNOR standards. A control group was studied. The survey consisted of 2203 interviews on the slopes using a randomised survey of 1597 alpine skiers. 204 interviews of ski renters were performed by telephone. 42,6% of the control group had heard of the campaign binding adjustment. Most people interviewed (90,1%) heard about the publicity campaign on ski accident risks. It is impossible to establish a link between the effects of the campaign and the small positive result found. Abstract

In occidental countries, the sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) originate mostly from virus: human papillomavirus (HPV) and Herpes simplex virus (HSV). During the latest 15 to 20 years, their prevalence has been regularly growing. Those viruses have in common a capacity for latency. The persistence of the virus in keratinocytes (PVH) or in ganglionic cells (HSV) and the lack of an efficient preventive or final curative treatment have several consequences: 1) a possible capacity of transmitting itself during sexual intercourse in the absence of clinical lesions, 2) a potency to recur all along the life especially when the organism suffer from immunodepression (patients with graft, chimiotherapy or AIDS). The oncogenic capacity of some HPV subtypes in anogenital cancers is now recognized. Those neoplasias are observed most often in immunodepressed patients but are nevertheless classically found in the uterine cervix of immunocompetent women. Genital herpes is often clinically diagnosed but its confirmation is obtained through isolating the HSV from the liquid of the vesicles or from a swab of the lesion. Biopsy is not usually useful. For HPVs, it is different since culture of papillomavirus is not possible. Diagnosis can then be get through biopsy: specific features (koïlocytes) or HPV identification. Treatments are also totally different. Since the appearance of aciclovir, followed by valaciclovir and famciclovir, antiviral drugs are available against herpes. There is no antiviral drug against HPV. The HPV infections are treated through destroying the clinical lesions: laser, cryotherapy, podophylline...

Abstract

The amount of injured snowboarders is increasing each year. The reason is due to the success of snowboarding for teenagers. Accidents occur more during the first hours of practice. Upper limb is the first location: fore-arm breaks and wrist fractures are very common. Elbow and shoulder dislocations also occur often for snowboarders. The location of most injuries for lower leg is the ankle; we found many ankle sprains and astragalus's breaks. The knee sprain is rare unlike alpine ski. Prevention has to be developed to give a better image of this sport, in fact the attitude of the participants is the main reason for the accidents.

Abstract

A breast-fed boy, born to first-cousin parents, had been vomiting since birth; his general condition remained good until age 6 weeks when vomiting became more frequent, and his status suddenly worsened, with polypnea, shock, hypothermia, jaundice, presence of blood in urine, gastric juice, stool, and bleeding tendency during veno-punctures. There was an huge hepatomegaly and a splenomegaly. Hypoglycaemia, metabolic acidosis, severe blood coagulation disturbances, elevated liver enzymes, hypoalbuminemia, pointed to an acute liver failure. He was resuscitated with current supportive measures, and was given a wide spectrum antibiotherapy. Because serologic tests for syphilis were positive in the child and his mother, including the presence of specific IgM the infant was then given Penicillin G therapy only, which resulted in a complete recovery. One month later, a needle liver biopsy showed residual signs of hepatitis. Other possible infectious or metabolic causes of acute liver failure occurring early in life had been excluded.

Abstract

Non-respiratory forms of tuberculosis are frequently described in immigrants from endemic countries and in immunocompromised patients. Among the extrapulmonary forms of tuberculous disease, peripheral lymph node involvements, generally cervical, are the most common. Interestingly, only a few cases of tuberculous inguinal adenitis have been reported in the literature during the last 15 years. We report 2 cases of isolated inguinal inflammatory lymphadenitis observed in immigrant immunocompetent women. The diagnosis of tuberculosis was confirmed by culture obtained by needle aspiration of a lymph node. The lesions completely healed after standard antituberculous therapy.

Abstract

In immunocompromised patient, parapoxvirus infection can be extensively necrotic and recurrent evolution. We describe a case of Orf nodule in a liver transplanted woman. We will consider the therapeutic options in case of infections by parapox in immunosuppressive patients, as described in the medical literature. In our specific case, local application of cidofovir (concentration of 1 %) together with local antiseptic solution, povidone iodine, led to complete remission of the lesion without any sign of toxicity. Finally, we will consider the therapeutic use of local cidofovir.
