1. [Effect of Light Color Temperature on Human Concentration and Creativity]

Abstract: Light has different biological effects depending on the color temperature and intensity. This may be the reason for its differing effects. We investigated the influence of color temperature (3000 K, 4500 K, 6000 K) under constant high intensity (1000 Lux) on concentration and creativity of 50 students and employees of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Campus Gummersbach (age: 30.9 +/- 10.8y.). As test method we used d2-bq-test, creativity test (mean of the number of ideas on 5 themes), word test and logic test. In addition, test subjects were asked to evaluate their impression of light by means of a questionnaire. To exclude the circadian influence and learning effects on the result, we performed tests at the same time of the day using a random order of color temperature. We found that creativity was better under warm light (3000 K) than under colder light (4500 K, 6000 K). Concentration was best under cold light (6000 K). Under the same light intensity conditions, subjects judged blue light (6000 K) to be brighter than red light (3000 K).

Abstract: The readout of scintillating fibers using Silicon APDs and Metal-Resistive-Semiconductor (MRS) devices was investigated in a large temperature range down to −150°C in the laboratory and at an electron beam. In comparison to conventional PMs with bialkali cathodes an improved efficiency was found for low light signals from blue and green scintillating fibers of 0.5 mm diameter.

Abstract: Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of charged particles measured in electron-proton collisions at low Q 2 with the H1 detector at HERA. The transverse momentum distribution extends up to 8 GeV/ c . Its shape is found to be harder than that observed in p p collisions at comparable centre-of-mass energies √S γp ≈ √S p p ≈ 200 GeV , and also harder than in γp collisions at lower energies √ S γp ≈ 18 GeV. Results from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations agree with the measured transverse momentum and pseudorapidity cross sections.

Abstract: An analysis is presented of scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) measured with the H1 detector at HERA in the range of Bjorken x values between x = 3 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 for four-momentum transfers Q > 2 larger than 8.7 GeV 2 . The structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is observed to rise linearly with ln Q 2 . Under the assumption that the observed scaling violations at small x ⩽ 0.01 are described correctly by perturbative QCD, an estimate is obtained of the gluon distribution function G ( x , Q 0 2 ) at Q 2 2 = 20 GeV 2 .

Abstract: A measurement of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) is presented with about 1000 neutral current deep inelastic scattering events for Bjorken x in the range x ⋍ 10−2 – 10−4 and Q2 > 5 GeV2. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 22.5 nb−1 recorded by the H1 detector in the first year of HERA operation. The structure function F2 (x, Q2) shows a significant rise with decreasing x.

Abstract: Inclusive jet cross sections are measured in photoproduction at HERA using the H1 detector. The data sample of e+ p -> e+ + jet + X events in the kinematic range of photon virtualities Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 and photon-proton centre-of-mass energies 95 < W_gammap < 285 GeV represents an integrated luminosity of 24.1 pb^-1. Jets are defined using the inclusive k_T algorithm. Single- and multi-differential cross sections are measured as functions of jet transverse energy E_T^jet and pseudorapidity ��^jet in the domain 5 < E_T^jet < 75 GeV and -1 < ��^jet < 2.5. The cross sections are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations corrected for fragmentation and underlying event effects. The cross section differential in E_T^jet, which varies by six orders of magnitude over the measured range, is compared with similar distributions from p pbar colliders at equal and higher energies., 34 pages, 9 figures and 7 tables

Abstract: A direct search for new particles in the H1 experiment at HERA is presented for masses ranging from 35 GeV up to ∼ 250 GeV. The data sample of 24 nb −1 accumulated during the first year of operation was analysed for signatures of scalar and vector leptoquarks, leptogluons, excited electrons and excited neutrinos with flavours of the first generation. No evidence for the production of such particles was found in various possible decay channels. Rejection limits are derived.

Abstract: Measurements of the scattered electron energy spectrum and the differential cross sections dσ/d log(x) and dσ/dQ2 for inclusive neutral current deep inelastic electron-proton scattering are presented. The data were obtained with the H1 detector at HERA during its first running period in which 26.7 GeV electrons collided with 820 GeV protons. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.3 nb−1 and allow the first studies of the structure of the proton at values of x down to 10−4 for Q2 > 5 GeV2.

Abstract: We present first results on the total photoproduction cross section measurement with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were extracted from low Q2 collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons. The γp total cross section has been measured by two independent methods in the γp center of mass energy range from 90 to 290 GeV. For an average center of mass energy of 195 GeV a value of σtot (γp) = 159 ± 7 (stat.) ± 20 (syst.) μb was obtained.

Abstract: We report on the investigation of the final state in interactions of quasi-real photons with protons. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. Evidence for hard interactions is seen in both single particle spectra and jet formation. The data can best be described by inclusion of resolved photon processess as predicted by QCD.

11. Reconstruction of double hits from drift chamber FADC pulses

Abstract: A method is proposed to recognize and resolve double-hit structures in 100 MHz FADC pulses using data taken with prototypes of the cylindrical outer z chamber of the HERA detector H1. With 90% efficiency double hits can be resolved down to distances of about 2.5 mm. The peak position of the second pulse can be reconstructed by subtracting a reference pulse from the signal which is derived from the data themselves. The resolution for perpendicular track crossing is about 250 μm. The method is fast and can be extended to multiple hits ( n > 2).

Abstract: Technical aspects of the three major components of the H1 detector at the electron-proton storage ring HERA are described. This paper covers the detector status up to the end of 1994 when a major upgrading of some of its elements was undertaken. A description of the other elements of the detector and some performance figures from luminosity runs at HERA during 1993 and 1994 are given in a paper previously published in this journal.

Abstract: General aspects of the H1 detector at the electron-proton storage ring HERA as well as technical descriptions of the magnet, luminosity system, trigger, slow-control, data acquisition and off-line data handling are given. The three major components of the detector, the tracking, calorimeter and muon detectors, will be described in a forthcoming article. The present paper describes the detector that was used from 1992 to the end of 1994. After this a major upgrade of some components was undertaken. Some performance figures from luminosity runs at HERA during 1993 and 1994 are given.

Abstract: Test measurements were performed with prototypes (full-scale radius and single cells) of the outer z -drift chamber (COZ) of the central tracker of the HERA experiment H1. The COZ consists of a 2.20 m long cylindrical arrangement of rectangular drift cells made of 24 identical rings of 47 cm radius with sense wires strung in a 24-fold polygon around the beam axis. The signals are transmitted via flexible twin lines to the preamplifiers located outside the gas volume at the end flanges. The tests were performed at a DESY test beam using Ar/CH 4 and Ar/C 3 H 8 and a 100 MHz FADC readout. Detailed results on the geometric efficiency, resolution and charge division are reported.

A single particle trigger selects events with one charged particle in the central region and large transverse momentum. The effect of this trigger on the multiplicities of all charged particles and of protons is shown.

Abstract: Measurements ofK 0 , Λ and $$\bar \Lambda $$ production in π− nucleus (C, Cu, Pb) interactions are presented. The experiment was carried out with the streamer chamber spectrometer RISK using a π− beam of ∼40 GeV/c and a trigger requiring a secondary charged particle with transverse momentum above 1.1 GeV/c. Production cross sections, relative production rates and distributions of Feynmanx and transverse momentum squared as well as correlations between theV 0 and the trigger particle are presented. The results are compared and found to be in agreement withK 0 , Λ and $$\bar \Lambda $$ data from untriggered π− p and π− C interactions, except for the relative production rate of antilambdas which is about to times larger in high-p t collisions. Our results can be well interpreted within the dual topological unitarization model.

Abstract: Analysing high transverse momentum π− nucleus interactions at 40 GeV/c, a search has been made for the hypothetical dibaryon H0 with strangeness −2, spin-parity 0+ and mass below the two lambda mass. The data came from an experiment performed with a streamer chamber which is well suited to find the H0 through its unique signature of the weak p decay. No H0 event has been found. The 90% confidence upper limit for the observed frequency of production of the H° dibaryon per inelastic π−A collision amounts to 1.5 ·10−4. Cross section upper limits are estimated for C, Cu and Pb targets, also with 90% confidence level. Suche nach dem neutralen Dibaryon mit der Strangeness -2 in π-Kern-Wechselwirkungen bei 40 GeV/c Im Rahmen der Analyse von π− Kern-Wechselwirkungcn bei 40 GeV/e wurde nach dem hypothetischen Dibaryon H° mit Strangeness -2, Spin-Paritat O+ und einem Massenwert unterhalb der ΛΛ-Masse gesucht. Die Datennahme erfolgte mit einer Streamerkammer, die es gestattet, den schwachen Zerfall des H° in ∑-p gut nachzuweisen. Es konnte kein H°-Ereignis gefunden werden. Eine obere Grenze fur die beobachtete Produktionsrate des H°-Dibaryons mit 90% Konfidenz pro inelastischer π−A-Wechselwirkung ist angegeben. Fur die drei unterschiedlichen Targets C, Cu, Pb wurden obere Grenzen des H°-Wirkungsquerschnitts ebenfalls mit 90% Konfidenz abgeschatzt.

Abstract: Multi-jet production is observed in deep-inelastic electron proton scattering with the H1 detector at HERA. Jet rates for momentum transfers squared up to 500 GeV2 are determined using the JADE jet clustering algorithm. They are found to be in agreement with predictions from QCD based models.

Abstract: Light has different biological effects depending on the color temperature and intensity. This may be the reason for its differing effects. We investigated the influence of color temperature (3000 K, 4500 K, 6000 K) under constant high intensity (1000 Lux) on concentration and creativity of 50 students and employees of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Campus Gummersbach (age: 30.9 +/- 10.8y.). As test method we used d2-bq-test, creativity test (mean of the number of ideas on 5 themes), word test and logic test. In addition, test subjects were asked to evaluate their impression of light by means of a questionnaire. To exclude the circadian influence and learning effects on the result, we performed tests at the same time of the day using a random order of color temperature. We found that creativity was better under warm light (3000 K) than under colder light (4500 K, 6000 K). Concentration was best under cold light (6000 K). Under the same light intensity conditions, subjects judged blue light (6000 K) to be brighter than red light (3000 K)., (© Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New York.)
