Abstract

The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons experiment at the injector of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility has demonstrated for the first time the efficient transfer of polarization from electrons to positrons produced by the polarized bremsstrahlung radiation induced by a polarized electron beam in a high-$Z$ target. Positron polarization up to 82\% have been measured for an initial electron beam momentum of 8.19~MeV/$c$, limited only by the electron beam polarization. This technique extends polarized positron capabilities from GeV to MeV electron beams, and opens access to polarized positron beam physics to a wide community., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present limits on anomalous WWZ and WW-gamma couplings from a search for WW and WZ production in p-bar p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. We use p-bar p -> e-nu jjX events recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during the 1992-1995 run. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 96.0+-5.1 pb^(-1). Assuming identical WWZ and WW-gamma coupling parameters, the 95% CL limits on the CP-conserving couplings are -0.33

Abstract

The lifetimes of the ${\mathit{B}}^{+}$ and ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$ mesons have been measured using fully reconstructed decays. In a sample of \ensuremath{\sim}49 600J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ decays recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab, 148\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}16 ${\mathit{B}}^{+}$ and 121\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}16${\mathit{B}}^{0}$ mesons have been reconstructed using the silicon vertex detector. Unbinned likelihood fits to the proper lifetime distributions of these B mesons give ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{+}$=1.61\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.16 (stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 (syst) ps, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{0}$=1.57\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.18 (stat) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08 (syst) ps, and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{+}$/${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{0}$=1.02\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.16 (stat) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 (syst).

Abstract

We present a measurement of $\sigma \cdot B(W \to e \nu)$ and $\sigma \cdot B(Z^0 \to e^+e^-)$ in proton - antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =1.8$ TeV using a significantly improved understanding of the integrated luminosity. The data represent an integrated luminosity of 19.7 pb$^{-1}$ from the 1992-1993 run with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). We find $\sigma \cdot B(W \to e \nu) = 2.49 \pm 0.12$~nb and $\sigma \cdot B(Z^0 \to e^+e^-) = 0.231 \pm 0.012$~nb.

Abstract

We measure the mass of the ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{s}}^{0}$ meson by reconstructing the decay chain ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{s}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\varphi}, J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, and \ensuremath{\varphi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$. The data are obtained from 19.3 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of integrated luminosity of p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}p collisions at \ensuremath{\surd}s=1.8 TeV using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. A sample of 80 000 inclusive J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ events is used to study systematic biases in track reconstruction and to calibrate the momentum scale. We reconstruct the kinematically similar decays ${\mathit{B}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}${\mathit{K}}^{+}$ and ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{*}0}$ to study the mass measurement technique used for the ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{s}}^{0}$ meson. Based on the observation of 32 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 6 candidates, the mass of the ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{s}}^{0}$ meson is measured to be 5369.9 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 2.3 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 1.3 MeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$ and the mass difference between ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{s}}^{0}$ and the average mass of ${\mathit{B}}^{+}$ and ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$ is determined to be 89.7 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 2.7 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 1.2 MeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report on the reconstruction of the decay mode B{sup 0o} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup 0}{sub s} using 19.3 pb{sup -1} of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in p{bar p} collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. A signal of 41.8{+-}6.9 events, with a signal-to-background ratio of 9:1, is observed. Three additional decay modes B{sup +} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup +}, B{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup *}(892){sup 0}, and B{sup +} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup *}(892){sup +} are reconstructed. We measure three ratios of branching ratios, each one relative to the B{sup +} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup +} mode. We also report the ratio of decay rates, {gamma}(B {yields} J/{psi}K{sup *})/{gamma}(B {yields} J/{psi}K), for the vector-vector relative to the vector-pseudoscalar modes, to be 1.32{+-}0.23(stat){+-}0.16(syst).

Abstract

We report on measurements of the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)$, $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(2S)$, and $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(3S)$ differential, ${(\frac{{d}^{2}\ensuremath{\sigma}}{d{P}_{t}\mathrm{dy}})}_{y=0}$, and integrated cross sections in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV using a sample of 16.6 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.6 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The three resonances were reconstructed through the decay $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. Comparison is made to a leading order QCD prediction.

Abstract

This Letter reports on measurements of the longitudinal polarization fractions in the decays {ital B}{sub {ital d}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sup *0} and {ital B}{sub {ital s}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{phi} using data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. {ital B}{sub {ital d}} mesons are reconstructed through the decay chain {ital B}{sub {ital d}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}*, {ital J}/{psi}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}, {ital K}{sup *0}{r_arrow}{ital K}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}. A sample of 65{plus_minus}10{ital B}{sub {ital d}} events is used to obtain a longitudinal polarization fraction of {Gamma}{sub {ital L}}/{Gamma}=0.65{plus_minus}0.10(stat){plus_minus}0.04(syst). {ital B}{sub {ital s}} mesons are reconstructed through the decay chain {ital B}{sub {ital s}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{phi}, {ital J}/{psi}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}, {phi}{r_arrow}{ital K}{sup +}{ital K}{sup {minus}}. A sample of 19{plus_minus}5{ital B}{sub {ital s}} events is used to obtain the result {Gamma}{sub {ital L}}/{Gamma}=0.56{plus_minus}0.21(stat){sub {minus}0.04}{sup +0.02}(syst). Abstract

This paper presents the first direct measurement of the $B$ meson differential cross section $d\ensuremath{\sigma}{/dp}_{T}$ in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8$ TeV using a sample of $19.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7$ p${\mathrm{b}}^{--1}$ accumulated by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross section is measured in the central rapidity region $|y|l1$ for ${p}_{T}\left(B\right)g6.0$ GeV $/c$ by fully reconstructing the $B$ meson decays ${B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}^{+}$ and ${B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}^{*0}\left(892\right)$, where $J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${K}^{*0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. A comparison is made to the theoretical QCD prediction calculated at next-to-leading order.

Abstract

We present the results of a search for second generation leptoquarks ${S}_{2}$ using $19.3{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8$ TeV during the 1992--93 collider run. We have searched for ${S}_{2}\overline{{S}_{2}}$ pairs assuming that each leptoquark decays to a muon $+$ quark with a branching ratio $\ensuremath{\beta}$. We find two candidate events, consistent with an expected background of $1.11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.48$. We obtain upper limits on $\ensuremath{\sigma}(p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{S}_{2}\overline{{S}_{2}}){\ensuremath{\beta}}^{2}$ as a function of ${M}_{{S}_{2}}$. Using a Monte Carlo prediction for ${S}_{2}\overline{{S}_{2}}$ pair production, we exclude ${M}_{{S}_{2}}l131\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}/{c}^{2}$ for $\ensuremath{\beta}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$ and ${M}_{{S}_{2}}l96\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}/{c}^{2}$ for $\ensuremath{\beta}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.5$ at 95% C.L.

Abstract

The CDF data acquisition (DAQ) system requires an upgrade to enable it to handle data rates of 1 kHz or more from the front-end to Level3. The current UltraNet network will have to be replaced, and one possibility is to do so with a scalable optical switching network. This paper discusses such a possibility.

Abstract

We have searched for new, heavy, charged bosons {ital W}{prime} through the decay {ital W}{prime}{r_arrow}{ital e}{nu} in {ital pp}{ovr bar} collisions at {radical}{ital s}=1.8 TeV. The data used in the search represent 19.7 pb{sup --1}collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Limits are placed on {sigma}{ital B}({ital pp}{ovr bar}{r_arrow}{ital W}{prime}{r_arrow}{ital e}{nu}) as a function of {ital M}{sub {ital W}{prime}}. Assuming standard couplings of the {ital W}{prime} to fermions, we establish the limit {ital M}{sub {ital W}{prime}}{gt}652 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} (95% C.L.).

Abstract

Charge asymmetry has been measured using 19 039 [ital W] decays recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992--93 run of the Tevatron Collider. The asymmetry is sensitive to the ratio of [ital d] and [ital u] quark distributions to [ital x][lt]0.01 at [ital Q][sup 2][approx][ital M][sup 2][sub [ital W]], where nonperturbative effects are minimal. It is found that of the two current sets of parton distributions, those of Martin, Roberts, and Stirling are favored over the sets most recently produced by the CTEQ Collaboration. The [ital W] asymmetry data provide stronger constraints on [ital d]/[ital u] ratio than the recent measurements of [ital F][sub 2][sup [mu][ital n]]/[ital F][sub 2][sup [mu][ital p]], which are limited by uncertainties originating from deuteron corrections.

Abstract

We present the results of a search in [ital [bar p]] [ital p] collisions at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV for the top quark decaying to a charged Higgs bosson ([ital H][sup [plus minus]]). We search for dilepton final states from the decay chain [ital t] [ital [bar t]][r arrow][ital HH] (or [ital HW], or [ital WW])+[ital b] [ital [bar b]][r arrow][ital ll]+[ital X]. In a sample of 19.3 pb[sup [minus]1] collected during 1992--93 with the Collider Detector at Fermilab, we observe 2 events with a background estimation of 3.0[plus minus]1.0 events. Limits at 95% C.L. in the (M[sub top],M[sub [ital H][sup [plus minus]]]) plane are presented. For the case [ital M][sub top][lt][ital M][sub [ital W]]+[ital M][sub [ital b]], we exclude at 95% C.L. the entire ([ital M][sub top],[ital M][sub H[plus minus]]) plane for the branching ratio [ital B]([ital H][r arrow][tau][nu]) larger than 75%. We also interpret the results in terms of the parameter tan[beta] of two-Higgs-doublet models.

Abstract

The [ital W]+jet angular distribution is measured using [ital W][minus][gt][ital e][nu] events recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) during 1988--89 and 1992--93 Tevatron runs. The data agree well with both a leading order and a next-to-leading order theoretical prediction. The shape of the angular distribution is similar to that observed in photon+jet data, and significantly different from that observed in dijet data.

Abstract

The Data Acquisition System (DAQ) at the Collider Detector at Fermilab is currently being upgraded to handle a minimum of 100 events/sec for an aggregate bandwidth which is at least 25 Mbytes/sec. The DAQ System is based on a commercial switching network which has interfaces to VME bus. The modules that read out the front end crates (FASTBUS and RABBIT) have to deliver the data to the VME bus based host adapters of the switch. This paper describes a read out system that has the required bandwidth while keeping the experiment deadtime due to the read out to a minimum. >

Abstract

A fast trigger processor was developed for the study of high multiplicity charged particle events in collisions at the Tevatron Collider accelerator. The processor allowed the scaling of triggers for specified multiplicity ranges and was incorporated in the fast trigger logic.

Abstract

We have measured the cross section for production of [psi] and [psi][prime] in [ital [bar p]] and [pi][sup [minus]] interactions with Be, Cu, and W targets in experiment E537 at Fermilab. The measurements were performed at 125 GeV/[ital c] using a forward dimuon spectrometer in a closed geometry configuration. The gluon structure functions of the [ital [bar p]] and [pi][sup [minus]] have been extracted from the measured [ital d][sigma]/[ital dx][sub [ital F]] spectra of the produced [psi]'s. From the [ital [bar p]]W data we obtain, for [ital [bar p]], [ital xG]([ital x])=(2.15[plus minus]0.7)[1[minus][ital x]][sup (6.83[plus minus]0.5)] [1+(5.85[plus minus]0.95)[ital x]]. In the [pi][sup [minus]] case, we obtain, from the W and the Be data separately, [ital xG]([ital x])=(1.49[plus minus]0.03)[1[minus][ital x]][sup (1.98[plus minus]0.06)] (for [pi][sup [minus]]W), [ital xG]([ital x])=(1.10[plus minus]0.10)[1[minus][ital x]][sup (1.20[plus minus]0.20)] (for [pi][sup [minus]]Be).

Abstract

This Letter reports the observation and mass measurement of fully reconstructed [ital B][sub [ital s]][sup 0] mesons through the decay chain [ital B][sub [ital s]][sup 0][r arrow][ital J]/[psi] [psi], [ital J]/[psi][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]], [phi][r arrow][ital K][sup +][ital K[minus]] using data obtained at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in [ital [bar p]p] collisions at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV. A signal of 14.0[plus minus]4.7 events is observed. Comparison of the [ital B][sub [ital s]][sup 0] signal with the kinematically similar decays [ital B][sup +][r arrow][ital J]/[psi] [ital K][sup +] and [ital B][sup 0][r arrow][ital J]/[psi] K[sup *](892)[sup 0] is presented. The mass of the [ital B][sub [ital s]][sup 0] meson is determined to be 5383.3[plus minus]4.5(stat)[plus minus]5.0(syst) MeV/[ital c][sup 2].

Abstract

The transverse momentum of charged mesons and p's produced within the pseudorapidity range of η = −0.36 to η = +1.0 and azimuthal range of φ = +2° to φ = +18° has been measured in pp collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV. The charged multiplicity of each event was measured by either the 240 element cylindrical hodoscope covering the range −3.25 < η < +3.25 or the central drift chamber, which spans a pseudorapidity range of 3.2 units. The average transverse momentum as a function of the pseudorapidity density for mass-identified particles is presented. We have observed pseudorapidity densities as high as 30 particles per unit pseudorapidity.

Abstract

We present a survey of the recent results of E-735 in its search for QGP signals at the Fermilab Collider. The basic data are the inclusive P t distributions of centrally produced π, K, p and Λ 0 as a function of total charged multiplicity in the collision; the variation of 〈P t 〉 and particle ratios are derived. Preliminary results on π-π correlations and inclusive photon production are also presented.

Abstract

In p-p collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV, the yields and the transverse momentum distributions of π±, K±, p± in the central region have been measured up to a charged particle pseudo rapidity density of (dnc/dη) ≈ 16. The dependence of the average transverse momentum on the charged particle rapidity density of the Centrally Produced Matter is presented. We observe that the increase of with increasing dn/dη is more significant for heavier particles than that for lighter particles.

Abstract

The yields and the transverse momentum distributions of pions, kaons, and antiprotons produced in the central region of pp collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider have been measured up to a charged particle pseudo-rapidity density of approximately 20. The average transverse momentum pt as a function of dNc/dη for all three types of particles is presented. We find that transverse flow does not explain the pt separation. The most plausible interpretation is that the pt vs. Nc spectra represent in isobar in the two phase region.

Abstract

E-735 is designed to study charged particle production in the central region of rapidity in proton-antiproton collisions at √ s = 1.8 TeV. Variations in transverse momentum and particle production ratios versus particle density are measured as a possible signature for a quack-gluon-plasma (QGP) phase transition. Preliminary results from the 1987 run are presented.

Abstract

We present the first measurement of associated direct photon$+$muon production in hadronic collisions, from a sample of 1.8 TeV $p\overline{p}$ collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily from the Compton scattering process $c\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{g}c\ensuremath{\gamma},$ with the final state charm quark producing a muon. Hence this measurement is sensitive to the charm quark content of the proton. The measured cross section of $29\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}9$ pb is compared to a leading-order QCD parton shower model as well as a next-to-leading-order QCD calculation.

Abstract

We report on measurements of differential $\mu - {\bar b}$ cross sections, where the muon is from a semi-leptonic $b$ decay and the ${\bar b}$ is identified using precision track reconstruction in jets. The semi-differential correlated cross sections, d$\sigma$/d$\Et^{{\bar b}}$, d$\sigma$/d$\pt^{{\bar b}}$, and d$\sigma$/d$\delta\phi(\mu - {\bar b})$ for $\pt^{\mu}>$~9 GeV/c, $|\eta^{\mu}| $~10 GeV, $|\eta^{{\bar b}}

Mass storage is needed for data logging during the online data acquisition, data retrieval and storage during the event reconstruction and data manipulation during the physics analysis. Abstract

The single- and two-particle inclusive rapidity distributions for proton-nucleus interactions at 300 GeV in nuclear emulsions are presented. The analysis of the data with the two-particle rapidity correlation function R ( ν 1 , ν 2 ) shows clear evidence of short range correlations. A remarkable asymmetry between projectile and target hemisphere is found.

Abstract

The ACP Branchbus, a high speed differential bus for data movement in multiprocessing and data acquisition environments, is described. This bus was designed as the central bus in the ACP multiprocessing system. In its full implementation with 16 branches and a bus switch, it will handle data rates of 160 MByte/sec and allow reliable data transmission over inter rack distances. We also summarize applications of the ACP system in experimental data acquisition, triggering and monitoring, with special attention paid to FASTBUS environments.

Abstract

Results from a study of p-nucleus interactions in emulsion at an incident energy of 300 GeV are presented. The observed events were separated into those belonging to the light (C,N,O) and the heavy (Ag, Br) groups of target nuclei. Some characteristics of the fast-charged- (shower-) particle multiplicity and angular distributions for the light and heavy groups, as well as for emulsion, are reported and compared with the results from our previous experiments at 200 GeV. The average number of shower particles, , has the values /sub CNO/ = 12.1 +- 0.5, /sub AgBr/ = 16.7 +- 0.5, and /sub em/ = 15.1 +- 0.2. The quantity R/sub A/, defined as the ratio of created charged particles in p-nucleus and p-p collisions, is consistent with the relation R/sub A/ = A/sup 0//sup .//sup 19/. While the width of the shower-particle distribution as measured by the dispersion D is greater at 300 GeV than at 200 GeV, the value of /D is about 1.68 at both energies. The average number of slow charged particles resulting from the evaporation of the target nucleus remains virtually unchanged at the two energies. The angular distributions of shower particles plotted in terms of eta = -lnmore » tan(theta/2) show that, for a given nucleus, there are more particles at smaller angles at the higher energy, while there is no change in the distribution at large angles. In addition, for a given energy, the number of shower particles at larger angles increases with increasing size of the target nucleus.« less

Abstract

A large acceptance forward spectrometer located in a unique antiproton enriched beam has been used at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory by Experiment 537 to study the production of high mass muon pairs. When the beam was operated at a momentum of 125 GeV/c, it had a flux of 1.5 × 107 particles per second of which 18% were antiprotons. The spectrometer was of closed geometry design and used drift chambers as the tracking elements. Operating over a relatively short period, the experiment accumulated the largest sample of antiproton-induced high mass dimuons of any experiment to date. The contamination of this data by pion-induced dimuons was less than 0.5%.

E-735 is searching for signs of the quark-gluon-plasma phase transition in minimum bias proton-antiproton events. Results from the 1987 run at the Tevatron Collider at √ s = 1.8TeV are presented. Included are distributions of the average Pt versus multiplicity dependence for charged particles, and preliminary particle identification analysis using time of flight.

Abstract

Software has been developed for use with the Fermilab ACP multiprocessor system (described in an accompanying paper). The software was designed to make a system of a hundred independent node processors as easy to use a single, powerful CPU. Subroutines have been developed by which a user's host program can send data to and get results from the program running in each of his ACP node processors. Utility programs make it easy to compile and link host and node programs, to debug a node program on an ACP development system, and to submit a debugged program to an ACP production system.

Abstract

We describe a fast trigger processor, developed for and used in Fermilab experiment E-537, for selecting high-mass dimuon events produced by negative pions and anti-protons. The processor finds candidate tracks by matching hit information received from drift chambers and scintillation counters, and determines their momenta. Invariant masses are calculated for all possible pairs of tracks and an event is accepted if any invariant mass is greater than some preselectable minimum mass. The whole process, accomplished within 5 to 10 microseconds, achieves up to a ten-fold reduction in trigger rate.

Abstract

We have measured the centroids of high energy electromagnetic showers initiated by positrons in the energy range 2 to 17.5 GeV with a fine grained scintillation hodoscope composed of seven 1 cm wide elements placed behind a 3.6 radiation length (15 cm) converter composed of SCG1-C scintillation glass. A simple first moment calculation using the ionization observed in each element of this hodoscope yields a shower positron resolution as a function of energy of: σ( mm )⋍0.7±5.6/√E( GeV ) . We present results on the energy dependence of the shower profiles and the ionization measured by this hodoscope.

Abstract

We have measured the response of an electromagnetic shower counter constructed from the new scintillation glass (SCG1-C, Ohara Optical Glass, Inc.) to positrons in the energy range 2 to 17.5 GeV. We have measured the energy resolution of this 18.4 radiation length detector plus its attendant SF5 lead glass shower counter array to be σ/E = (1.64±0.14)%+(1.13±0.33)%/√E with the constant term dominated by variations in the variations in the conversion point of the positron and shower leakage. We found this counter to be linear over the energy range examined. We have also measured the light output of the SCG1-C counter relative to light output of the SF5 lead glass guard blocks using 17.5 GeV positrons. We find that the SCG1-C counter produces 5.10±0.30 more light at the phototube than the SF5 lead glass counters.

Abstract

The Advanced Computer Program at Fermilab has developed a multiprocessor system which is easy to use and uniquely cost effective for many high energy physics problems. The system is based on single board computers which cost under $1500 each to build including 2 Mbytes of on board memory. Expansion to 6 Mbytes is now available. These standard VME modules each run experiment reconstruction code in Fortran at speeds approaching that of a VAX 11/780. The first system, now with 100 processors, has been operated for six months, with essentially no down time, by computer operators in the Fermilab Computer Center. An interface from Fastbus to the Branch Bus has been developed for online use which has been tested error free at 20 Mbytes/s for 48 hours. ACP hardware modules are available commercially.

Abstract

Proton-nucleus interactions have been studied in nuclear emulsion exposed to the NAL 200 GeV proton beam. The inelastic mean free path is found to be 35.5 ± 0.8 cm and the average shower particle multiplicity is 12.9 ± 0.2. The angular distribution reveals some characteristics features of proton-nucleus interactions.

Abstract

The cross section for the reaction p-barN..--> mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/X with muon pairs in the mass range 40 was measured to be sigma = 0.104 +- 0.005 +- 0.008 nb/nucleon. The distributions dsigma/dx/sub F/ and M/sup 3/dsigma/dM were compared to the QCD-improved Drell-Yan model and to calculations including first-order QCD corrections using deep-inelastic structure functions. Excellent agreement with the data was obtained if the calculations were multiplied by factors of 2.45 and 1.41, respectively.

Abstract

The Fermilab Advanced Computer Program is constructing a powerful multi-microprocessor system for data analysis in high-energy physics. The system will use commercial 32-bit microprocessors and be programmed in Fortran-77. A large array of support software allows easy migration of user applications from a uniprocessor environment to the multiprocessor, as well as providing sophisticated program development, debugging, and error handling and recavery tools. This system will provide computing power with a cost effectiveness of $3000-4000 per VAX 11/780 equivalent. We describe here the applications of this system as an on-line trigger processor. The low cost, commercial availability, compatibility with off-line analysis programs, and high data bandwidths (up to 160 MByte/sec) make this system an ideal choice for such real-time applications.

Abstract

We have studied muon pairs with an invariant mass between 4 and 9 GeV/${c}^{2}$ produced in p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}N and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$N interactions at an incident momentum of 125 GeV/c. The experiment was performed at Fermilab using a tungsten target and a special beam enriched to contain 18% antiprotons. We compare differential distributions as functions of the dimuon invariant mass, Feynman x, transverse momentum, and decay angles of the dimuon to the predictions of the Drell-Yan model including QCD corrections. Quark structure functions for the p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ are extracted. Comparisons of the antiproton data to the Drell-Yan model are significant because the cross sections depend principally on the valence-quark structure functions which are accurately determined by deep-inelastic scattering measurements. The measured absolute cross section (integrated over positive Feynman x and all transverse momenta) is 0.106\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008 nb/nucleon for the p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}N interaction and 0.107\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.003\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.009 nb/nucleon for the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$N interaction, where the quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. Normalization (K) factors that are required to bring the naive Drell-Yan and first-order QCD predictions into agreement with the measurements are extracted, and the uncertainties involved in such comparisons are examined.

Abstract

ACP/R3000-processor-based data-acquisition systems for high-energy physics are described. This VMEbus-compatible processor board, with a computational power equivalent to 15 VAX 11/780s or better, contains 8 Mb of memory for event buffering and has a high-speed secondary bus that allow data gathering from front-end electronics. The ACPR3000 processor, the ACP/XBUS, the software support for the processor, and applications of the systems are discussed. >

Abstract

Angular and multiplicity correlations in proton–nucleus interactions in emulsion are interpreted within the framework of the Energy Flux Cascade model. The average mass of the 'slow bodies' or novae emitted in the backward hemisphere is ~3.5 GeV/c2 at both energies. This result is in reasonable agreement with previous work on two-particle correlations.

Abstract

We have measured the centroids of high energy electromagnetic showers initiated by positrons in the energy range 2 to 17.5 GeV with a fine grained scintillation hodoscope composed of seven 1 cm wide elements placed behind a 3.6 radiation length (15 cm) converter composed of SCG1-C scintillation glass. A simple first moment calculation using the ionization observed in each element of this hodoscope yields a shower position resolution as a function of energy of: ?(mm) ? 0.7 ± 5.6/?E(GeV). We present results on the energy dependence of the shower profiles and the ionization measured by this hodoscope.

Abstract

We report on 400 GeV proton-emulsion nucleus reactions and compare the results to hadron-nucleus reactions at smaller energies. In particular we present results on the emission of fast target protons (essentially grey track particles) and on their correlation with the number of collisions inside the nucleus, ν, with the number of charged evaporated particles (essentially black track particles) and with the number of pions produced (essentially shower particles). We observe that the main features of the 200–400 GeV data are very similar. However, we find that the mean shower-particle multiplicity at 400 GeV is essentially higher than expected from the simple independent particle model prediction 〈ns〉 = 〈nch〉[1 + 0.5(〈ν〉 − 1)]. The shower particle multiplicities do not seem to follow a target mass dependence of the form 〈ns〉 = 〈nch〉 Aα with α = 0.14 or α = 0.19 as has been suggested in the literature. The pseudo-rapidity distribution shows limiting target and projectile fragmentation. The shower-particle multiplicity in the “central region” increases linearity with 〈ν〉 but faster than 0.5〈ν〉 times the corresponding multiplicity in pp reactions.
