Abstract

Three-dimensional measuring method of the material distribution of an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery (ASSLiB) cathode, by synchrotron radiation high-resolution X-ray computational tomography (nanotomography, nano-CT) and deep learning is proposed in this study. The cathode of the ASSLiB comprised materials with high X-ray absorption coefficients, such as LiCoO2 and LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2. Such high absorption coefficients imparted difficulties in obtaining a high-resolution, high-contrast image and in identifying materials with conventional CT value method. The method proposed in this study was effective in acquiring a high-resolution image with fewer artifacts and measured the heavy materials at a high signal-to-noise ratio. We used deep learning with a customized U-net, enabling high accuracy and ultra-high-speed material identification. Using this method, constituent materials were successfully identified in three dimensions. This material identification technique showed great potential for application to other techniques such as focused ion beam–scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract

Cross-correlation between magnetism and dielectric is expected to offer distinct emergent phenomena. Here, magnetic excitations in the organic donor-acceptor spin-chain system, tetrathiafulvalene-bromanil (TTF-BA), with a ferroelectric ground state is investigated by ^{1}H-NMR spectroscopy. A nonmagnetic transition with a ferroelectric order is marked by sharp drops in the NMR shift and the nuclear spin relaxation rate T_{1}^{−1} at 53 K. Remarkably, the analyses of the NMR shift and T_{1}^{−1} dictate that the paramagnetic spin susceptibility in TTF-BA is substantially suppressed from that expected for the one-dimensional Heisenberg spins. We propose that the spin-lattice coupling and the ferroelectric instability cooperate to promote precursory polar singlet formation in the ionic spin system with a nonmagnetic ferroelectric instability.

Abstract

Strong coupling of charge, spin, and lattice in solids brings about emergent elementary excitations with their intertwining and, in one dimension, solitons are known as such. The charge-transferred organic ferroelectric, TTF-CA, has been argued to host charge solitons; however, the existence of the charge solitons remains unverified. Here, we demonstrate that the charge-transport gap in the ionic Mott-Peierls insulating phase of TTF-CA is an order of magnitude smaller than expected from quasiparticle excitations, however, being entirely consistent with the charge soliton excitations. We further suggest that charge and spin solitons move with similar diffusion coefficients in accordance with their coexistence. These results provide a basis for the thermal excitations of the emergent solitons., 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Introduction Metabolic syndrome (Met Sy) as a highly debatable cluster of traditional risk factors is known to promote cardiometabolic-related morbidity and mortality, but its precise mechanisms remain to be determined. Purpose We sought to determine influence of MetSy on heart failure (HF) morbidity and mortality in the Seven Countries' Study as one of the oldest epidemiological studies. Methods The Seven Countries Study encompassed 12,763 participants from 3 continents who were all healthy men of over 40 years at baseline and who underwent regular check ups every 5 years throughout over a 4 decades' span. Morbidity and mortality was adjudicated according to valid ICD and LPH coding. Results Using the IDF definition of the Metabolic Syndrome, 9,09% of participants were identified (Figure 1). HF was confirmed in 220 patients (16.4% alive at 40y follow up visit), while 8.2% died of HF as well in the same time-frame (Tables 1 & 2). Presence of MetSy has been shown to significantly influence HF mortality (Figures 2) with lowest survival of 22% for 300 months of follow up for patients with both MetSy and HF (Log rank test=4.405, p Conclusion Metabolic syndrome treatment remains in the realm of risk factors' control that now we know influence both ischemic heart disease and heart failure of other origins. Historically, just emerging biomarkers' and targeted imaging weren't available to determine such at the time of HF diagnosis. Also, the sample consisted of men only, mainly Caucasian and a modest proportion of Asian and African-American now known to carry ethnic-specific burden of cardiovascular disease. All of the above, emphasizes the importance of more diversity, equity and inclusion-dedicated long term both observational, as well as interventional research. Abstract

We have numerically examined the spectral shape of the ratio of the intensity variation upon the magnetization reversal for the 444 reflection of the ferromagnetic intermetallic compound GdAl2 in the vicinity of the Gd L 2 edge and succeeded in roughly reproducing the experimental spectra for two different magnetization directions simultaneously. The main features of the spectral shape are described in terms of the conventional dispersion effects and the resonant magnetic scattering of electric dipole transitions.

Abstract

A retrospective study was performed to determine the efficacy of a tethering procedure developed to achieve a more rigid fixation and more reliable outcome in patients with refractory dislocation of the temporomandibular joint. The cases of eight patients with dementia and systemic diseases who underwent this technique were reviewed. In these eight patients, the condyles of 13 joints were ligated using wire between screws placed in the eminence and condylar head. Additional screw-wire ligations were applied to reinforce the restraint of movement in five of the 13 joints with suspected uncontrolled dislocation. The procedure was performed successfully, and the patients were followed-up for an average of 25months. In one patient, dislocation recurred 1year postoperatively due to wire breakage. The five joints in which a double set of screw-wire tethering was applied showed no recurrence or wire disturbance. This technique may, therefore, have short-term efficacy in cases that are refractory to standard procedures, although the material used for ligation should be investigated further. This approach can contribute to the quality of life of patients, particularly those with a short life-expectancy.

Abstract

The theoretical formulae for the relative change in the x-ray scattering intensity from a ferromagnetic material upon the magnetization reversal are derived for three particular cases of the magnetization direction with the model where the magnetization dependence arises from the resonant magnetic scattering of electric dipole transitions under no crystal field. With illustrating the numerical results, the prospects for the application of the resonant magnetic scattering to the x-ray polarimetry are discussed.

Abstract

Deafferentation pain induced by subarachnoid block (SAB) is rare, but it can appear in the form of recurrent phantom lower limb pain, new acute-onset stump pain in amputees, lower limb pain in patients with tabes dorsalis, and neuropathic pain. We have previously reported that thiopental is an effective treatment for deafferentation pain induced by therapeutic SAB applied to treat neuropathic pain of central origin. Here, we report the case of an amputee who developed new stump pain in his lower limb immediately after subarachnoid tetracaine was administered prior to appendectomy. A 51-year-old man who had previously undergone right below-knee amputation for acute arterial thrombosis, and who had not previously experienced chronic phantom limb or stump pain, was scheduled for emergency open appendectomy. For anesthesia, we induced SAB with a hyperbaric tetracaine solution. No paresthesia occurred during administration. However, the patient immediately complained of severe, lightning-bolt pain in the right lower limb stump after the SAB was established. He was given intravenous pentazocine, which promptly resolved the pain. Appendectomy was then performed under sedation using intravenous midazolam. The patient did not experience further deafferentation pain during his hospital stay and has reported no stump pain since discharge from the hospital. This case report suggests that SAB induces deafferentation pain in some patients and that this unusual pain can be treated with pentazocine.

Abstract

Using elliptically polarized white synchrotron radiation and an energy-sensitive detector, the 444 reflection from a single-crystal sample of the ferromagnetic compound GdAl2 magnetized along the scattering vector has been measured, and the asymmetry of the diffraction intensity upon the magnetization reversal has been studied in the X-ray energy range across the Gd L II edge. The dependence of the magnetic asymmetry on the scattering angle or on the X-ray energy is understood as the superposition of the sharp near-edge structure and the much broader component arising from the interference between the electric scattering and the resonant and nonresonant magnetic scattering, respectively. To interpret the experimental results, an analytical treatment of the magnetic asymmetry is developed, and in the course of the analysis it is pointed out that in general the pseudo-extinction of the Bragg reflection due to the dispersion effects can be utilized as a technique to raise the magnetic sensitivity in the X-ray scattering from ferromagnetic materials. The potential of an unconventional approach to the resonant X-ray scattering using a white beam, as is clearly demonstrated by the present experiment, is also discussed.

Abstract

Cell culture methodology has been utilized as a powerful tool to characterize cells with a presupposition that the cells in culture faithfully reproduce their in vivo phenotypes. However, it is generally recognized that the cells cultured currently by the most commonly utilized two-dimensional (2D) monolayer technology exhibit different phenotypes from those in living tissues. Cultivation of cells in three-dimensional (3D) lattices of collagen fibrils (collagen gel culture) has been thought to overcome the shortages of 2D cell culture such that the cells behave as in vivo by interacting with not only nearby other cells but also by surrounding extracellular matrices. A remarkable outcome of studies on collagen gel culture was a demonstration of contractile nature of the cells. One of the not-fully appreciated issues about the 3D cell culture is the effect of fluid flow through the collagen gels on cells’ phenotypes. In this review, we make a short overview of historical and current studies of the collagen gel culture from a viewpoint of ‘how we can more correctly extract the cell-related phenomena in living tissues/organs by in vitro culture technology, placing an emphasis on the importance of stimuli caused by flow of cell culture medium.’

Abstract

An experimental method of X-ray magnetic diffraction was applied to the ferromagnetic rare-earth compound CeRh3B2, and its spin and orbital magnetic form factors were measured independently for the first time. Our curve-fitting analysis shows that the orbital magnetic form factor is reproduced by the calculated atomic-model form factor of Ce-4f electrons under the dipole approximation. The comparison of the sum of form factors and the total magnetic form factor measured by the polarized neutron diffraction reveals anisotropic distribution of the magnetic moment in real space.

Abstract

An experimental system of X-ray magnetic diffraction (XMD) is developed on BL3C at the Photon Factory (PF) of High Energy Research Organization (KEK). We applied this upgraded XMD experimental system to 3d- and 4f-electron ferromagnet, YTiO3 and CeRh3B2, respectively. In YTiO3 we successfully obtained spin magnetic form factor for 31 reciprocal lattice points. The observed spin magnetic form factor suggests anisotropic spin density distribution in real space. In CeRh3B2 we succeeded in measuring spin and orbital magnetic form factor separately. We found that the dominant part of the magnetic moment is the orbital component in CeRh3B2. Abstract

An X-ray magnetic diffraction (XMD) is applied to ferromagnetic transition metal oxide YTiO3. The spin magnetic form factors are measured for 81 reciprocal lattice points of h0l, hk0 and 0kl series. Three-dimensional spin density distribution in the real space of YTiO3 is successfully obtained by using Maximum Entropy Method (MEM). This is the first result of spin density in the real space by the XMD.

Abstract

A system model was used to develop an autothermal reforming fuel processor to meet the targets of 80% efficiency (higher heating value) and start-up energy consumption of less than 500 kJ when operated as part of a 1-kWe natural-gas fueled fuel cell system for cogeneration of heat and power. The key catalytic reactors of the fuel processor – namely the autothermal reformer, a two-stage water gas shift reactor and a preferential oxidation reactor – were configured and tested in a breadboard apparatus. Experimental results demonstrated a reformate containing ∼48% hydrogen (on a dry basis and with pure methane as fuel) and less than 5 ppm CO. The effects of steam-to-carbon and part load operations were explored.

Abstract

The Japan Arteriosclerosis Longitudinal Study-Existing Cohorts Combine (JALS-ECC) is a pooled study based on individual participant data from existing prospective cohort studies in Japan. Its purpose was to consider associations between risk factors and cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes, as well as differences between subgroups, defined by age, gender or geographical region, which could not be detected in the smaller samples.Individual records for 66,691 participants in 21 cohort studies were pooled, accounting for a total of 575,628 person-years. From this data, there were 409 deaths attributed to stroke and 169 deaths attributed to coronary heart disease (CHD). Total stroke and CHD events were 1,478 and 178, respectively. Of the 1,424 total stroke events with a reported stroke subtype, 975 were classified as ischemic, 267 as hemorrhagic, and 178 as subarachnoid hemorrhage.The JALS-ECC collected data from existing cohort studies covering a diverse Japanese population, which has provided information about the effects of modifiable factors on the risks of the CVD. Such information should provide a reliable basis for establishing prevention strategies.

Abstract

The Ni magnetic moment in the GdNi2 Laves phase compound is studied in detail by the use of the magnetic Compton profile (MCP) method. Analysis of the MCP, measured at 30 K, reveals that the spin component of Ni 3d electrons coupled antiparallel to that of Gd 4f electrons, and it was confirmed that the Ni retains a spin magnetic moment of 0.16 ± 0.08 μB. Furthermore, the total magnetic moment, including the angular momentum component, is found to be 0.23 ± 0.11 μB and this value that is obtained is in accord with that derived from direct measurement of the bulk magnetization. Our finding of the existence of the Ni magnetic moment contradicts the well-known fact that Ni loses its magnetic moment in the Laves phase of rare-earth (RE)–Ni compounds. In addition, the magnetic moment originating from the electrons with s- and p-character, which are donated by the Gd and Ni atoms, is also observed and quantified.

Abstract

Functionally graded materials (FGM) have spatial distribution of a material property in order to achieve efficient stress control. An application of the FGM to a solid insulator (spacer) for a gaseous insulation system, like gas insulated switchgear, is expected to improve electric field (E-field) distribution around the spacer. In this paper, we describe the applicability of the FGM spacer to gas insulated power equipment. In the FGM spacer, we gave spatial distribution of dielectric permittivity to control the E-field distribution inside and outside the spacer. This paper includes following key results for the applications of the FGM. Firstly, E-field simulation results when applying the FGM by a finite element method are presented, in which we show the effective reduction of the maximum field strength by applying the FGM. Next, a fabrication technique of the FGM spacer sample with not only step-by-step but also continuous changes of permittivity is presented by use of centrifugal force. Finally, dielectric breakdown tests using FGM samples which are accurately controlled the spatial distribution of permittivity are carried out under lightning impulse voltage applications. The test result indicates the increase of breakdown voltage (BDV). From these results, we verified the applicability and the fabrication technique of FGM spacer for improvement of the dielectric strength in the gaseous insulation system.

Abstract

A ferromagnetic system which has an external magnetization that is intrinsically zero is an interesting and unusual type of magnet. The rare earth ion Sm 3 + provides a basis for building such a system, having the property that its spin and orbital moments are both close to 4 μ B . Antiparallel coupling of these moments by spin–orbit interaction leads to a very small resultant moment that is either parallel or antiparallel to the spin moment of the ion, depending on the exact balance. By doping Gd into the ferromagnet SmAl 2 ( T c = 125 K ) an experimental realization of a zero magnetization ferromagnet can be produced, with exactly zero magnetization occurring at temperature T comp . Zero-field muon spin relaxation measurements have been made on single crystal and polycrystalline samples of the Sm 1 - x Gd x Al 2 system and for all the compositions studied an extremely sharp transition into the ferromagnetic state was observed. Muon spin precession was seen in the magnetically ordered state of the Sm compounds and anomalies in the relaxation were observed around T comp , reflecting the unusual nature of this magnetic state.

Abstract

An X-eX spectrometer has been developed to obtain the two-dimensional and three-dimensional electron momentum density (2D- and 3D-EMD) directly from experiment. The spectrometer is equipped with a time-of-flight energy analyzer to record the flight direction and the kinetic energies of the recoiled electrons, and a position sensitive photon detector to record the directions of the Compton scattered photons. The signals from the electron branch and those from the photon branch are processed in coincidence mode. The obtained 2D-EMD on the (100) plane in Si and the 3D-EMD on the [100] and the [111] axes are compared with the FLAPW theoretical results.

X-ray magnetic diffraction (XMD) technique was applied to an orbital ordering compound of ferromagnetic YTiO3 for the first time. The orbital-magnetic form factor μL(k) and the spin-magnetic form factor μS(k) were independently measured by utilizing the LS separation ability of the XMD. The μL(k) was measured for ten reciprocal-lattice points. No significant values of the μL(k) were observed for most of the reciprocal-lattice points within the estimated statistical errors, which suggested quenching of the orbital moment. The μS(k) was measured for 22 reciprocal-lattice points. Fourier synthesis of the μS(k) gave the spin density distribution mS(r) in the real space. The obtained mS(r) map shows the characteristic feature of the electron distribution of 3d electron in the t2g state of a Ti atom coordinated by O2− ions, in which the electrons are distributed away from the negative O2− ions. It is concluded that the electron distribution of the 3d electron of the Ti atom, that is, the ordered orbital (or the wave function) of YTiO3 was observed in the real space by the XMD technique.

Abstract

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies were carried out on (Sm, Gd)Al2, a ferromagnet without net magnetization at a certain compensation temperature. For Sm 4f electrons, the following understandings were obtained: the magnitude of expectation value of orbital magnetic moment ( m L Sm ) is always larger than that of spin one ( m S Sm ), so the cancellation of total spin and orbital magnetic moments cannot be achieved only by Sm 4f electrons and the contributions from Gd ions and conduction electrons are important; when the temperature decreases, the magnitude of both m L Sm and m S Sm increases and the gross magnetic moment due to the Sm 4f electrons monotonically deviates from zero. These results tell us that the temperature dependence of magnetic moments related with the electrons other than Sm 4f ones may play important roles in the subtle adjustment of the total spin and orbital magnetic moments to the zero magnetization at the compensation temperature.

Calculated spin-magnetic form factor with a model wave function of the ordered orbital reproduced the observed one well. This result shows that the ordered orbital of Ti-3d electrons can be observed by the XMD.
