1. The utilization of wood samples from xylarium in historical wooden statues: improving the separation accuracy non-destructive measurement for using several algorithms

Abstract: Abstract There are numerous wooden historical artifacts in Kyoto and other parts of Japan, including Buddhist statues or Shinto deities. The identification of wood species in these historical artifact is desirable for both repair and maintenance purposes. The most common method of identifying wood species involves examining samples taken from the artifacts. However, intentional sampling from old cultural artifacts is prohibited in Japan. As a result, we attempted to determine the wood species of old statues non-destructively using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). In this article, we developed the softwood and hardwood separation model using NIRS to compare the prediction accuracy for few algorithms. The model was created based on wood samples stored in the xylarium of the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (TWTw). We then applied this model to old Buddhist statues in order to classify them as either softwood or hardwood. These Buddhist statues were housed in Nazenji temple and are believed to have been carved during the Heian period (8th–12th century). For the near-infrared (NIR) measurements, we collected diffuse reflectance spectra from TWTw sample and Buddhist statues using same spectrometer. Initially, we used the soft independent modeling of class analogy method (SIMCA), partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS_DA), and support vector machine to analyze the NIR spectra obtained from the TWTw wood samples. Subsequently, we applied the NIR spectra obtained from several Buddhist statues in Nazenji temple to the aforementioned separation model and determined whether spectra data were classified as the softwood or hardwood. Finally, wood specimens detached naturally from the Buddhist statues over time were observed under microscopic analysis to identify the wood species. As comparing the prediction accuracy of few algorithms, SIMCA had a poor result, but PLS_DA had a good result. PLS_DA had better discrimination because it performed calculations to improve regression from both explanatory variables and objective variables.

2. Significant nutrient consumption in the dark subsurface layer during a diatom bloom: a case study on Funka Bay, Hokkaido, Japan

Abstract: We conducted repetitive observations in Funka Bay, Hokkaido, Japan, on 15 February, 4 and 15 March, and 14 April 2019. The diatom spring bloom peaked on 4 March and started declining on 15 March. Funka Bay winter water remained below 30 m depth, which was below the surface mixed-layer and dark-layer depth (0.1 % of the surface photosynthetically active radiation, PAR, depth) on 4 and 15 March. In the subsurface layer at depths of 30–50 m, concentrations of NO3-, PO43-, and Si(OH)4 decreased by half between these dates, even in the dark. Incubation experiments using the diatom Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii showed that this diatom could consume added nutrients in the dark at substantial rates after pre-culturing to deplete nutrients. Incubation experiments using natural seawater collected in the growing phase of the bloom on 8 March 2022 also showed that nutrient-depleted phytoplankton could consume added nutrients in the dark. We excluded three physical process – water mixing, diffusive transport, and subduction – as possible main reasons for the decrease in nutrients in the subsurface layer. We conclude that the nutrient reduction in the subsurface layer (30–50 m) between 4 and 15 March 2019 could be explained by nutrient consumption by diatoms in the dark in that layer.

Abstract: Superconducting (SC) tokamak JT-60SA plays an essential role in fusion research and development by supporting and complementing the ITER project, providing directions to the DEMO design activity and fostering next generation scientists and engineers. Since the short circuit incident at the terminal joints of equilibrium field coil #1 during the integrated commissioning (IC) in March 2021, both EU and JA implementing agencies (IAs) have examined how to ensure safe operation of JT-60SA by mitigating the risk of possible discharge occurrence inside the cryostat. Based on the experience of the global Paschen tests, the IAs have established a strategy of risk mitigation measures, which is a combination of (i) reinforcement of insulation, (ii) avoiding unnecessary voltage application to the coil systems and (iii) immediate de-energization of the coils when deteriorated vacuum conditions are detected. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the Integrated Project Team members, the IC restarted in May 2023. After confirmation of the SC state of the coil systems (TF, EF and CS), the coil energization test and the plasma operation phase 1 (OP-1) started. The first plasma was successfully achieved on 23 October 2023 with a limited value of voltage and current applied to the coils. The plasma configuration control was also confirmed with low plasma current and low auxiliary heating power conditions. Based on the IO–F4E–QST collaboration, activities of JT-60SA have been shared with the IO and provided an important lesson for ITER assembly and commissioning, and will provide an outstanding contribution to fusion research at large. After OP-1, maintenance & enhancement phase 1 (M/E-1) starts from January 2024, in which in-vessel components are installed, and heating and diagnostic systems are extensively upgraded to allow a high power heating experiment planned in OP-2. In order to make the best use of JT-60SA, a newly organized JT-60SA experiment team will refine the research plan for the future high heating power operation phase.

Abstract: We demonstrate room-temperature 13C hyperpolarization by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) using optically polarized triplet electron spins in two polycrystalline systems: pentacene-doped [carboxyl-13C] benzoic acid and microdiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy (NV−) centers. For both samples, the integrated solid effect (ISE) is used to polarize the 13C spin system in magnetic fields of 350–400 mT. In the benzoic acid sample, the 13C spin polarization is enhanced by up to 0.12 % through direct electron-to-13C polarization transfer without performing dynamic 1H polarization followed by 1H−13C cross-polarization. In addition, the ISE has been successfully applied to polarize naturally abundant 13C spins in a microdiamond sample to 0.01 %. To characterize the buildup of the 13C polarization, we discuss the efficiencies of direct polarization transfer between the electron and 13C spins as well as that of 13C−13C spin diffusion, examining various parameters which are beneficial or detrimental for successful bulk dynamic 13C polarization.

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the CTA-North site, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to ≃20 GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in 2019 November, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data ever since. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the performance of the telescope. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period—only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope’s behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is around 20 GeV, rising to ≃30 GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.°12–0.°40, and energy resolution from 15%–50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50 hr observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03–30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. A clear periodic signal is also detected from the pulsar at the center of the Nebula.

Abstract: We study the broadband emission of Mrk 501 using multiwavelength observations from 2017 to 2020 performed with a multitude of instruments, involving, among others, MAGIC, Fermi's Large Area Telescope (LAT), NuSTAR, Swift, GASP-WEBT, and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. Mrk 501 showed an extremely low broadband activity, which may help to unravel its baseline emission. Nonetheless, significant flux variations are detected at all wave bands, with the highest occurring at X-rays and very-high-energy (VHE) γ -rays. A significant correlation (>3 σ ) between X-rays and VHE γ -rays is measured, supporting leptonic scenarios to explain the variable parts of the emission, also during low activity. This is further supported when we extend our data from 2008 to 2020, and identify, for the first time, significant correlations between the Swift X-Ray Telescope and Fermi-LAT. We additionally find correlations between high-energy γ -rays and radio, with the radio lagging by more than 100 days, placing the γ -ray emission zone upstream of the radio-bright regions in the jet. Furthermore, Mrk 501 showed a historically low activity in X-rays and VHE γ -rays from mid-2017 to mid-2019 with a stable VHE flux (>0.2 TeV) of 5% the emission of the Crab Nebula. The broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of this 2 yr long low state, the potential baseline emission of Mrk 501, can be characterized with one-zone leptonic models, and with (lepto)-hadronic models fulfilling neutrino flux constraints from IceCube. We explore the time evolution of the SED toward the low state, revealing that the stable baseline emission may be ascribed to a standing shock, and the variable emission to an additional expanding or traveling shock.

Abstract: The medium-entropy alloy CrCoNi is known to have exceptional mechanical properties. To clarify its local structure, we performed extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurement of CrCoNi. The structural disorder is larger in Cr sites than in other constituent elements, which is consistent with the larger atomic displacement of the Cr atoms predicted by previous first-principles calculations. The Cr atom has a solute-type characteristic that induces local disorder. The differences in local disorder among the constituent elements decrease as the annealing time increases in the temperature range in which a short-range order develops.

Abstract: The effects of helium production, displacement damage on mechanical properties and microstructures were investigated in some specimens such as austenitic stainless steels of SUS304 and SUS316 and a high chromium martensitic steel of HCM12A steels irradiated in a high fluence irradiation facility (HIT) of the University of Tokyo. The simultaneous dual ion (nickel plus helium ions) irradiations were adopted to simulate nuclear irradiation environments such as fast reactor and fusion reactor at HIT to 1 or 10 dpa and to 0, 1, 10, and 100 appm-He at 500, 550, and 600 °C. Thin foils for a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were prepared with a focused ion beam (FIB) micro-sampling system. After the irradiation, the microstructures were observed by a transmission electron microscope and the irradiation hardening was measured by nano-indentation technique. In this study, the efficient of non-destructive measurement method of surface acoustic wave (SAW) excited by laser beam on the detection of radiation hardening behavior was also examined. Irradiation hardening was observed and the increment was tended to increase with dpa and He/dpa, which was especially effective in the condition of 100 appmHe/dpa even at 550 °C. Non-linear effect on amplitude of the excited SAW was also observed on the ion irradiated materials, and the propagation velocity of SAW was tended to be increased with irradiation dose. It was found that the behaviors of SAWs results were correlated with the changes of mechanical properties. 9. Genetic correlations between yield traits or days open measured in cows and semen production traits measured in bulls

Abstract: We used a bivariate animal model to investigate the genetic correlations between yield traits or days open (DO) as characters measured in cows and semen production traits as characters measured in bulls. Lactation records of 305-day milk, fat, and protein yields, and DO, from 386 809 first-lactation Holstein cows in Hokkaido, Japan, that calved between 2008 and 2014 were used. Semen production records were collected between 2005 and 2014 and included volume per ejaculate (VOL), sperm concentration (CON), number of sperm per ejaculate (NUM), progressive motility index of sperm (MOT), and MOT after freeze-thawing (A-MOT). Number of sperm per ejaculate was log-transformed into a NUM score (NUMS). A total of 30 373 semen production records from 1196 bulls were obtained. The pedigree file used for analysing the records was involving 885 345 animals. Heritability was estimated for VOL (0.42), CON (0.12), NUMS (0.37), MOT (0.08), and A-MOT (0.11). Weak and negative genetic correlations were recorded between yield traits measured in cows and VOL, CON or NUMS measured in bulls. Moderate and negative genetic correlations were obtained between DO and MOT (–0.42) or A-MOT (–0.43). Selection focused on MOT or A-MOT measured in bulls may therefore improve DO measured in cows.

Abstract: In this study, hydrogen boride films are fabricated by ion-exchange treatment on magnesium diboride (MgB2) films under ambient temperature and pressure. We prepared oriented MgB2 films on strontium titanate (SrTiO3) substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Subsequently, these films were treated with ion exchangers in acetonitrile solution. TOF-SIMS analysis evidenced that hydrogen species were introduced into the MgB2 films by using two types of ion exchangers: proton exchange resin and formic acid. According to the HAXPES analysis, negatively charged boron species were preserved in the films after the ion-exchange treatment. In addition, the FT-IR analysis suggested that B-H bonds were formed in the MgB2 films following the ion-exchange treatment. The ion-exchange treatment using formic acid was more efficient compared to the resin treatment; with respect to the amount of hydrogen species introduced into the MgB2 films. These ion-exchanged films exhibited photoinduced hydrogen release as observed in a powder sample. Based on the present study, we expect to be able to control the morphology and hydrogen content of hydrogen boride thin films by optimising the ion-exchange treatment process, which will be useful for further studies and device applications.

Abstract: To develop a mechanistic bacterial dose–response model, based on the concept of Key Events Dose–Response Framework (KEDRF), this study aimed to investigate the invasion of intestinal model cells (Caco-2) by Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes and described the behaviour of both pathogens as a mathematical model using Bayesian inference. Monolayer-cultured Caco-2 cells (approximately 105 cells) were co-cultured with various concentrations (103–107 colony forming unit [CFU] ml−1) of Salm. Typhimurium and L. monocytogenes for up to 9 h to investigate the invasion of the pathogens into the Caco-2 cells. While an exposure of ≥103 CFU ml−1 of Salm. Typhimurium initiated the invasion of Caco-2 cells within 3 h, much less exposure (102 CFU ml−1) of L. monocytogenes was sufficient for invasion within the same period. Furthermore, while the maximum number of invading Salm. Typhimurium cells reached by approximately 103 CFU cm−2 for 6-h exposure, the invading maximum numbers of L. monocytogenes cells increased by approximately 106 CFU cm−2 for the same exposure period. The invasion kinetics of both the pathogens was successfully described as an asymptotic exponential mathematical model using Bayesian inference. The developed pathogen invasion model allowed the estimation of probability of Salm. Typhimurium and L. monocytogenes infection, based on the physiological natures of digestion process, which was comparable to the published dose–response relationship. The invasion models developed in the present study will play a key role in the development of an alternative pathogen dose–response model based on KEDRF concept.

Abstract: The article considers the key problems of the transition of the national health system to a new platform of personalized medicine and, in particular, pediatrics. In the second part, published in this issue, the main mechanisms for building a new model are analyzed. The main prerequisites (financial and economic, fundamental research and applied research), the emergence and construction in the structure of global trends in the development of health care markets, actualized at the end of the last century, are presented. It is indicated that one of the main incentives for the development of personalized medicine is a noticeable increase in individual and social demand for preventive drugs and the corresponding tools. The development of programs for managing their own health is gaining in importance, and new business-development models (including public and private partnerships) are being developed and implemented. The evidence is examined that a progressive scenario for the development of a model of personalized medicine will provide a significant reduction in the cost of medical care. A large section of the article is devoted to the development of the provision that the understanding and awareness of the importance of the protection and management of one's own health by a modern state, medical audience and individual citizen is the most important aspect of the educational and educational activities of a doctor and a nurse. The perspectives of personalized pediatrics as a global instrument for restructuring the entire healthcare system are considered in detail.

Abstract: The article considers the key problems of the transition of the national health-care system to a new platform of personalized medicine and, in particular, pediatrics. The first part, published in this issue, analyzes the most important of the necessary aspects of the infrastructure of the new model. Evidence is given of the extreme urgency of introducing a new model of predictive, preventive and personalized medicine (PPPM). The result of implementation should be breakthrough success in solving many epidemiological, diagnostic, curative, preventive, social and economic problems. It is emphasized that neonatology and pediatrics are the most important link in this paradigm. When considering the potential architectonics of the model, important characteristics of its main segments are revealed. Diagnostic principles (genotyping, targeting, and dynamic screening of biomarkers) and arsenal (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, mathematical modeling tools, etc.) of personalized medicine are presented. Attention is focused on the need to create information (global, regional and target-specific) banks that are necessary for monitoring individual health. The need to create a new social decision-making mechanism for selecting a preventive protocol that minimizes the risks of the disease or prevents its development is discussed. Four categories of basic programs of medical and social support of persons from the risk category are considered. The necessary conditions for translating these programs into practice are presented. The main tasks and problems of developing the principles for the preparation of preventive-prophylactic and protocols of medical rehabilitation for personalized medicine were discussed.

Abstract: This study investigates the microstructure and mechanical property in heat affected zone (HAZ) between F82H and SUS316L jointed by 4 kW fiber laser welding at different parameters such as laser scan rate and beam position. OM/FE-SEM observation, EPMA analysis and nano-indentation hardness test were utilized to characterize the microstructure and evaluate the mechanical property. Results show that the HAZ width is dependent on the welding condition. The precipitation of M23C6 particle in HAZ is found to be closely related to the distance from WM/HAZ interface. Decrease in Cr and C concentration in M23C6 depended on the welding condition; the decrease was relatively milder in the case of shifting the beam position to SUS side. Furthermore, the rapid increment in nano-indentation hardness, i.e. ≈2500 MPa, at HAZ/F82H interface was observed regardless of welding parameters. The temperatures at HAZ/F82H interface were estimated from Cr and C concentration change of M23C6 by EPMA. It was revealed that the temperature of HAZ/F82H interface increased with increasing HAZ width, and that the presence of over-tempered HAZ (THAZ) region is confirmed only in the specimens welded right on the F82H/SUS interface (no-shift) at the laser scan rate of 3 m/min.

16. Precipitation of carbides in F82H steels and its impact on mechanical strength

Abstract: The precipitation of carbides in F82H steel and its model steel (Fe-0.2TaC) were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and extracted residue tests (ERT). The effects of tempering on the precipitation in F82H steels were elucidated on the basis of the characterization of carbides, as well as the quantitative estimation of precipitation strengthening at room temperature. Firstly, the number density of precipitates was measured by extracted residue test in Fe-0.2TaC and tempered F82H steel, and compared with the TEM observation. It was found that the ratio of volume fraction between the TEM and the ERT was respectively 1.84 and 0.54 for Fe-0.2TaC and tempered F82H steel, revealing that the collection probability of ERT strongly depends on the precipitate features, size and number density. Effects of annealing on the precipitation in F82H steels were investigated by ERT. The amount of carbide showed a non-linear relationship to tempering parameter, TP = T(20 + logt). It steeply increased in the TP range from 15.3 to 16.2. The precipitation strengthening in F82H steel was estimated to be about 5–10% relative to its proof strength, suggesting that the carbides in F82H steel have a minor role on the tensile strength at room temperature, though these precipitates are greatly beneficial for improving the creep and radiation resistance at elevated temperatures.

Abstract: Quantum sensors based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are expected to demonstrate a wide variety of applications. For high-sensitivity quantum sensors with NV center ensembles, uniform manipulation of the electron spins of the NV centers in large volumes is required. In addition, a broad microwave frequency bandwidth for manipulating the NV centers' electron spin is necessary for vector magnetometry and measurement under a finite static magnetic field. Here, we demonstrate a broadband microwave antenna for uniform manipulation of millimeter-scale volumes of diamond quantum sensors. The simulation shows that the current is distributed at both edges of the loop coil of a single copper plate due to the skin effect. The loop coil acts like a Helmholtz coil, which realizes uniformity in the z-direction of the microwave magnetic field ( B1). The plate structure has a higher mechanical stability, durability, and a larger heat capacity than the Helmholtz coil, due to its large volume. The antenna achieves a higher performance than previously reported antennae, with a maximal B1 of 4.5 G, a broad bandwidth of 287 ± 6 MHz, and a peak-to-peak variation of [Formula: see text] over a 3.1 mm3 cylinder volume. These performances show that the presented antenna is suitable for manipulating solid-state spin ensembles for high-sensitivity quantum sensors.

Abstract: Magnetic phase transitions under high pressure are reported for the diamond lattice antiferromagnet Co _3−x Rh _x O _4 in the range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 2.0, which is an isostructural S = 3/2 system for the well-known frustrated antiferromagnet CoAl _2 O _4 . In the Co _3−x Rh _x O _4 system, magnetic and specific-heat measurements at ambient pressure revealed that a second-order antiferromagnetic transition occurred at the Néel temperature ( T _N ) which exhibits a nonmonotonic x -variation. The physical pressure variations of T _N were determined by ac-calorimetry under hydrostatic pressures up to p = 2.6 GPa for Co _2 RhO _4 and CoRh _2 O _4 . The rates of change of T _N with pressure (i.e., the pressure coefficients), 1.93 and 1.61 K GPa ^−1 , respectively, were comparable to those for CoAl _2 O _4 and Co _3 O _4 , respectively. The pressure coefficients of magnetic ordering temperature for these A-site spinel compounds were considerably larger than those for other spinel and iron-garnet compounds which follow the empirical ‘10/3 law’. Simple analysis of the chemical and physical pressure coefficients of T _N revealed that T _N depended on both the lattice volume and the oxygen positional parameter u .

Abstract: Very-high Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astroparticle physics is a relatively young field, and observations over the past decade have surprisingly revealed almost two hundred VHE emitters which appear to act as cosmic particle accelerators. These sources are an important component of the Universe, influencing the evolution of stars and galaxies. At the same time, they also act as a probe of physics in the most extreme environments known - such as in supernova explosions, and around or after the merging of black holes and neutron stars. However, the existing experiments have provided exciting glimpses, but often falling short of supplying the full answer. A deeper understanding of the TeV sky requires a significant improvement in sensitivity at TeV energies, a wider energy coverage from tens of GeV to hundreds of TeV and a much better angular and energy resolution with respect to the currently running facilities. The next generation gamma-ray observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), is the answer to this need. In this talk I will present this upcoming observatory from its design to the construction, and its potential science exploitation. CTAO will allow the entire astronomical community to explore a new discovery space that will likely lead to paradigm-changing breakthroughs. In particular, CTA has an unprecedented sensitivity to short (sub-minute) timescale phenomena, placing it as a key instrument in the future of multi-messenger and multi-wavelength time domain astronomy. Abstract: Prediction models for enteric methane (CH4) emissions from beef cattle proposed by various groups may not perform with similar accuracy for the low- and middle-income countries in South-east Asia (SE-Asia) because beef cattle in these countries are raised under different climatic conditions with diverse feeding systems, and have different CH4 emission characteristics. The objectives of this study were to: i) predict CH4 emission (g d−1 animal−1), yield [g kg−1 dry matter intake; DMI)−1], intensity [g kg−1 average daily gain)−1], and CH4 conversion factor (Ym) using an intercountry database of individual animal records from SE-Asia; ii) evaluate the impact of different dietary forage contents (all-, high- and low-forage) representing the diverse feeding systems on CH4 emission, yield, intensity and Ym in SE-Asia; and iii) cross-validate equations from this study with published data. A total of 398 individual animal observations of beef cattle from SE-Asia were used for this analysis. Linear models developed by incrementally adding covariates revealed that CH4 emission model using only DMI fitted to all data had a root mean square prediction error (RMSPE) of 16.9%. Subsets containing data with 100% forage in the diet (all-forage), 50–85% (high-forage) and < 50% (low-forage) had an RMSPE of 16.5%, 14.7%, and 17.4%, respectively. Linear multiple equation based on DMI and dietary NDF concentration (DMI + NDF_C, RMSPE = 15.2%; all-data) improved prediction accuracy over that of DMI alone. The DMI + NDF_C models for all-forage (RMSPE = 14.6%) and high-forage subsets (RMSPE = 13.3%) except for low-forage (RMSPE = 16.4%), improved the precision and accuracy of CH4 emission prediction. Methane yield and CH4 emission intensity could not be reliably modelled with the current database. The present study provides improved CH4 prediction models for beef cattle managed under diverse feeding systems in SE-Asia and affirmed that region-specific models are needed to reliably predict beef cattle CH4 emission at national or regional levels, particularly for low- and middle-income countries.

29. Relationships between conception rate in Holstein heifers and cows and milk yield at various stages of lactation

Abstract: We investigated the relationships between conception rates (CRs) at first service in Japanese Holstein heifers (i.e. animals that had not yet had their first calf) and cows and their test-day (TD) milk yields. Data included records of artificial insemination (AI) for heifers and cows that had calved for the first time between 2000 and 2008 and their TD milk yields at 6 through 305 days in milk (DIM) from first through third lactations. CR was defined as a binary trait for which first AI was a failure or success. A threshold-linear animal model was applied to estimate genetic correlations between CRs of heifers or cows and TD milk yield at various lactation stages. Two-trait genetic analyses were performed for every combination of CR and TD milk yield by using the Bayesian method with Gibbs sampling. The posterior means of the heritabilities of CR were 0.031 for heifers, 0.034 for first-lactation cows and 0.028 for second-lactation cows. Heritabilities for TD milk yield increased from 0.324 to 0.433 with increasing DIM but decreased slightly after 210 DIM during first lactation. These heritabilities from the second and third lactations were higher during late stages of lactation than during early stages. Posterior means of the genetic correlations between heifer CR and all TD yields were positive (range, 0.082 to 0.287), but those between CR of cows and milk yields during first or second lactation were negative (range, −0.121 to −0.250). Therefore, during every stage of lactation, selection in the direction of increasing milk yield may reduce CR in cows. The genetic relationships between CR and lactation curve shape were quite weak, because the genetic correlations between CR and TD milk yield were constant during the lactation period.

30. Synthesis and magnetic characterization of Sr-based Ni2X-type hexaferrite

Abstract: We have investigated the synthesis conditions, and the magnetic properties of the Sr2Ni2X-type hexagonal ferrite, Sr2Ni2Fe28O46. The Sr2Ni2X-type hexaferrite was synthesized at 1240∘C. The spontaneous magnetization at 5 K was 44.2 μB/f.u., suggesting that most of the Ni2+ ions are at the up-spin octahedral sites in the spinel-structure blocks within the model of a Néel-type collinear ferrimagnetic structure. The Curie temperature of the Sr2Ni2X-type hexaferrite was estimated to be TC[Sr2Ni2X] = 472∘C. This is consistent with the difference of the block stacking structures of SrM-type, Sr2Ni2X-type, SrNi2W-type, and nickel spinel ferrites.

Abstract: ATP-sensitive K+ (KATP) channels in kidney are considered to play roles in regulating membrane potential during the change in intracellular ATP concentration. They are composed of channel subunits (Kir6.1, Kir6.2), which are members of the inwardly rectifying K+ channel family, and sulphonylurea receptors (SUR1, SUR2A and SUR2B), which belong to the ATP-binding cassette superfamily. In the present study, we have investigated the expression and localization of Kir6.1 in rat kidney with Western blot analysis, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization histochemistry, and immunoelectron microscopy. Western blot analysis showed that Kir6.1 was expressed in the mitochondria and microsome fractions of rat kidney and very weakly in the membrane fractions. Immunohistochemistry revealed that Kir6.1 was widely distributed in renal tubular epithelial cells, glomerular mesangial cells, and smooth muscles of blood vessels. In immunoelectron microscopy, Kir6.1 is mainly localized in the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and very weakly in cell membranes. Thus, Kir6.1 is contained in the kidney and may be a candidate of mitochondrial KATP channels.

Abstract: Background: Patients achieving a pathologic complete response (pCR) following neoadjuvant therapy have significantly improved event-free survival relative to those who do not; and pCR is an FDA-accepted endpoint to support accelerated approval of novel agents/combinations in the neoadjuvant treatment of high risk early stage breast cancer. Previous studies have shown that recurrence risk increased with increasing burden of residual disease (as assessed by the RCB index). As well, these studies suggest that patients with minimum residual disease (RCB-I class) also have favorable outcomes (comparable to those achieving a pCR) within high risk tumor subtypes. In this study, we assess whether integrating RCB with MRI functional tumor volume (FTV), which in itself is prognostic, can improve prediction of distant recurrence free survival (DRFS); and identify a subset of patients with minimal residual disease with comparable DRFS as those who achieved a pCR. Imaging tools can then be used to identify the subset that will do well early and guide the timing of surgical therapy. Method: We performed a pooled analysis of 596 patients from the I-SPY2 TRIAL with RCB, pre-surgical MRI FTV data and known follow-up (median 2.5 years). We first assessed whether FTV predicts residual disease (pCR or pCR/RCB-I) using ROC analysis. We applied a power transformation to normalize the pre-surgical FTV distribution; and assessed its association with DRFS using a bi-variate Cox proportional hazard model adjusting for HR/HER2 subtype. We also fitted a bivariate Cox model of RCB index adjusting for subtype; and assessed whether adding pre-surgical FTV to this model further improves association with DRFS using a likelihood ratio (LR) test. For the Cox modeling, penalized splines approximation of the transformed FTV and RCB index with 2 degrees of freedom was used to allow for non-linear effects of FTV and RCB on DRFS. Result: Pre-surgical MRI FTV is significantly associated with DRFS (Wald p Conclusion: Pre-surgical MRI FTV is effective at predicting minimal residual disease (RCB0/I) in the I-SPY 2 TRIAL. Despite the association between FTV and RCB, FTV appears to provide independent added prognostic value (to RCB and subtype), suggesting that integrating MRI volume measures and RCB into a composite predictor may improve DRFS prediction. 37. Slow spin dynamics in a CoM2O4 A-site spinel (M=Al, Ga, and Rh)

Abstract: We report thermomagnetic properties in magnetically frustrated A-site spinel magnets of CoAl2O4, CoRh2O4, and cluster glass CoGa2O4 to comprehensively show the proximity effects of the Néel-to-spin-spiral (NSS) transition, which is predicted theoretically to occur in a magnetically frustrated A-site spinel antiferromagnet. The low-temperature magnetic phase remains controversial since the magnetic state of CoAl2O4 is in the vicinity of the NSS transition derived by the inherent magnetic frustrated interaction for an A-site spinel magnet and is also considerably sensitive to crystallographic disorder. The antiferromagnetic and spin-glass transitions were detected by measuring the direct-current and alternating-current susceptibilities and also thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) developing below the magnetic transitions at the Néel point (T N) and spin-glass transition temperature (T SG). The relaxation rate and the temperature derivative of TRM were both enhanced at T N and T SG, and they decayed rapidly above and below the transitions. We succeeded in extracting the relaxation time τ and other characteristic parameters from the isothermal relaxation of TRM, which was well fitted with a non-exponential relaxation form formulated by Weron based on purely stochastic theory in order to describe the originally dielectric relaxation. For the typical CoRh2O4 normal spinel (inversion-free A site) antiferromagnet and the CoGa2O4 random spinel spin-glass, the temperature variations of these parameters can distinguish the magnetic states. In contrast to the cases for CoRh2O4 and CoGa2O4, an enhancement of the relaxation rate of TRM for CoAl2O4 is indicated at low temperatures, which is probably related to the suppression of long-range antiferromagnetic order revealed by neutron diffraction studies.

38. How Much Carbon Do the Soils of Papua New Guinea Forests Contain?

Abstract: Preliminary assessment of carbon in forest soils of Papua New Guinea (PNG) was done for 53 sites. Simple soil-landscape model was constructed to explain how soil carbon relates to landscape position and landform processes. Despite limitations of the soil survey, sufficient data have been obtained to indicate that the amount of carbon in forest soils surveyed so far is related primarily to their carbon-complexing capacity (CCC) which, in turn, depends on their geological parent material and parent rock. Soils were grouped into six categories based on their carbon content. The six categories ranged from very low 0–50 t/ha to extremely high 601–1,000 t/ha. Amalgamating the areas of mapped geological units on the basis of their likely CCC and their median carbon content has enabled the total carbon content of all forest soils in PNG to be estimated as 7,727 × 106 t. This figure is approximate and will be modified as more results are obtained and more sophisticated GIS-based landscape analysis is undertaken. The total carbon in forest biomass, as measured in this National Inventory and estimated for roots, is 4,006 × 106 t. Thus, the total carbon in PNG’s forests at present is estimated to be 11,733 × 106 t, with 66% stored in the soil and 34% in the biomass. The high proportion of ecosystem carbon held in the soil emphasises the importance of implementing soil conservation measures to maintain the total carbon resource in PNG’s forests.

A.; Zech, A.; Zechlin, H.; Zhdanov, V., I; Zivec, M., The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for γ astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of γ cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of γ absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift z=2 and to constrain or detect γ halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3 pG . Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from γ astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. 41. Investigation of seepage behavior through unsaturated soil

Abstract: Kitamura et al.(1998) proposed a numerical model for seepage through unsaturated soil. In the model voids and soil particles in a small soil element are modeled by pipe and other impermeable parts respectively. The void ratio, water content, unsaturated-saturated permeability coefficient and suction can be derived from the model based on some probabilistic consideration. In order to prove the validity of the proposed model, the unsaturated permeability test and the water retention test were simultaneously carried out by a steady state type’s permeability test apparatus which was newly manufactured in our laboratory. The numerical experiment and permeability test on unsaturated soil were carried out in parallel for Toyoura sand and Shirasu. The soils were sampled in Kagoshima Prefecture which is located in the southern part of Kyushu Island, Japan. From the comparison of the results obtained by the numerical experiment with those obtained by the laboratory test it was found out that the proposed model could simulate the seepage behavior of pore water through unsaturated soil.

Abstract: Background Non-obstructive general angioscopy (NOGA) has revealed the intimal damages or atheromatous plaques as well as its spontaneous rupture of the aorta. Recent study revealed that plaque debris or different size of cholesterol crystals were detected in the blood above the spontaneous ruptured aortic plaque observed by NOGA and these plaque materials might cause the peripheral organ damages as the embolic source. These various morphological changes may cause the acute aortic events or atheroembolic events on the peripheral organs, such as brain, kidney, peripheral artery and so on. Purpose EAST-NOGA (Evaluation of AtheroSclerotic and rupture events by Non-Obstructive General Angioscopy) is a multi-center prospective observational study to assess the relationship between the findings of NOGA and future cardiovascular events. Methods Five hundred and seventy-seven patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease who underwent NOGA study. The major cerebrocardiovascular events including cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal cerebral infarction, and acute aortic syndrome were accumulated during the 2-year follow-up after NOGA study. Results The median number of aortic atheromatous plaques was 6 [IQR: 3–12]. A total of 514 patients were followed up (89.1%). The mean follow-up duration was 757±120 days. Major adverse cardiovascular events developed in 23 (4.5%) during 2 years follow-up. Patients with MACE and cerebral infarction, had significantly greater number of aortic atheromatous plaques (11 [5–19] vs. 6 [3–11], p Conclusion The number of atheromatous plaques identified by NOGA has a significant relation to the onset of cerebral infarction, which suggest the atheromatous plaque were vulnerable and ruptured spontaneously, then cause the aortogenic cerebral infarction. Abstract: In this paper, we present an evaluation of learning algorithms of a novel rule evaluation support method for post-processing of mined results with rule evaluation models based on objective indices. Post-processing of mined results is one of the key processes in a data mining process. However, it is difficult for human experts to completely evaluate several thousands of rules from a large dataset with noise. To reduce the costs in such rule evaluation task, we have developed a rule evaluation support method with rule evaluation models that learn from a dataset. This dataset comprises objective indices for mined classification rules and evaluation by a human expert for each rule. To evaluate performances of learning algorithms for constructing the rule evaluation models, we have done a case study on the meningitis data mining as an actual problem. Furthermore, we have also evaluated our method with ten rule sets obtained from ten UCI datasets. With regard to these results, we show the availability of our rule evaluation support method for human experts.

Abstract: In our work, we make two primary contributions to the field of adversarial example generation for convolutional neural network based perception technologies. First of all, we extend recent work on physically realizable adversarial examples to make them more robust to translation, rotation, and scale in real-world scenarios. Secondly, we demonstrate attacks against object detection neural networks rather than considering only the simpler problem of classification, demonstrating the ability to force these networks to mislocalize as well as misclassify. We demonstrate our method on multiple object detection frameworks, including Faster R-CNN, YOLO v3, and our own single-shot detection architecture.

Abstract: A quantum memory at microwave frequencies, able to store the state of multiple superconducting qubits for long times, is a key element for quantum information processing. Electronic and nuclear spins are natural candidates for the storage medium as their coherence time can be well above 1 s. Benefiting from these long coherence times requires one to apply the refocusing techniques used in magnetic resonance, a major challenge in the context of hybrid quantum circuits. Here, we report the first implementation of such a scheme, using ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond coupled to a superconducting resonator, in a setup compatible with superconducting qubit technology. We implement the active reset of the nitrogen-vacancy spins into their ground state by optical pumping and their refocusing by Hahn-echo sequences. This enables the storage of multiple microwave pulses at the picowatt level and their retrieval after up to 35 μs, a 3 orders of magnitude improvement compared to previous experiments.

Abstract: Main text A key comparison in dew-point temperature in the range of +30 °C to +95 °C was carried out among the national standards held by NMIJ (pilot), MSL (coordinator), RCM-LIPI/SNSU-BSN, SCL, KRISS, NMIM, NMIA, NIMT, CMS/ITRI, and NMC, A*STAR. The purpose of the comparison was to establish the degree of equivalence between realizations of local scales of dew point temperature of humid gas among the participating national institutes. Although the comparison schedule was considerably delayed, no significant drift of the transfer standard was observed over the whole period of the comparison. The result of a chi-squared test demonstrated that the comparison was effective, and the results obtained in the comparison can be used as reliable supporting evidence for CMCs that each participant claims. 49. Broadband excitation by chirped pulses: application to single electron spins in diamond

Abstract: Pulsed excitation of broad spectra requires very high field strengths if monochromatic pulses are used. If the corresponding high power is not available or not desirable, the pulses can be replaced by suitable low-power pulses that distribute the power over a wider bandwidth. As a simple case, we use microwave pulses with a linear frequency chirp. We use these pulses to excite spectra of single nitrogen–vacancy centres in a Ramsey experiment. Compared to the conventional Ramsey experiment, our approach increases the bandwidth by at least an order of magnitude. Compared to the conventional continuous wave-ODMR experiment, the chirped Ramsey experiment does not suffer from power broadening and increases the resolution by at least an order of magnitude. As an additional benefit, the chirped Ramsey spectrum contains not only ‘allowed’ single quantum transitions, but also ‘forbidden’ zero- and double quantum transitions, which can be distinguished from the single quantum transitions by phase-shifting the readout pulse with respect to the excitation pulse or by variation of the external magnetic field strength.

Abstract: Organic semiconductor radiation detectors have been developed using conductive polymers as sensor materials. Unlike the commonly used inorganic semiconductor detectors, the use of organic semiconductor detectors has facilitated large-scale fabrication of cheap and flexible detectors. In this study, a sensor is fabricated to improve the radiation sensitivity by combining an n-type titanium oxide (TiO2) semiconductor as an additive with a p-type polyaniline (Pani) semiconductor. A maximum detection efficiency of 10% for β -rays was achieved using a new comb-type electrode. We report the performance of the newly developed hybrid sensors, such as the incident rate dependence of detection efficiency and the long-term stability.
