The growth of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) epitaxial films of excellent purity from a lead-free BaO–B2O3–BaF2 flux and their characterization by the magnetic resonance methods are reported. The films were prepared by the standard dipping liquid-phase epitaxy onto gadolinium gallium garnet substrates of three crystallographic orientations (111), (110), and (100). The objective of utilization of a lead-free flux was to reduce the content of impurities and intrinsic defects in the garnet films and to obtain samples with minimum microwave losses. The samples exhibited very narrow NMR and spin wave linewidths. The diamagnetic and paramagnetic doping of YIG with ions of different valency and segregation of these ions between the garnet layer and the barium melt were also studied and the relevant distribution coefficients for doping into the tetrahedral (Ga, Al, Si Ge), octahedral (In) and dodecahedral (La, Ca) sites were determined. It is proved that if a linear operator $\ell:C([a,b];\mathbb{R})\rightarrow L([a,b];\mathbb{R})$ is nonpositive and for the initial value problem $$u''(t)=\ell(u)(t)+q(t),\quad u(a)=c_1,\quad u'(a)=c_2 $$ the theorem on differential inequalities is valid, then $\ell$ is an $a$-Volterra operator.

Dynamic nuclear polarization for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and imaging uses free radicals to strongly enhance the NMR signal of a compound under investigation. At the same time, the radicals shorten significantly its nuclear spin relaxation times which reduces the time window available for the experiments. Radical scavenging can overcome this drawback. Our work presents a detailed study of the reduction of the TEMPOL radical by ascorbic acid in solution by high-resolution NMR. Carbon-13 and hydrogen-1 nuclear spin relaxations are confirmed to be restored to their values without TEMPOL. Reaction mechanism, kinetics, and the influence of pD and viscosity are thoroughly discussed. The detailed investigation conducted in this work should help with choosing suitable concentrations in the samples for dynamic nuclear polarization and optimizing the measurement protocols.

The guidelines for clinical practice for carriers of pathogenic variants in clinically relevant genes predisposing to Lynch syndrome and colorectal cancer define the steps of primary and secondary prevention that should be provided to the individuals at high risk of developing hereditary cancer in the Czech Republic. The drafting of the guidelines was organized by the Oncogenetics Working Group of the Society for Medical Genetics and Genomics of J. E. Purkyně Czech Medical Society, in cooperation with representatives of oncology, oncogynecology, and gastroenterology. The guidelines are based on the current recommendations of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) and take into account the capacity of the Czech healthcare system.

Behavior of individual molecules of normal and heavy water in beryl single crystals was studied by 1 H and 2 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. From temperature dependences of the spectra, we deduce that type-I water molecules embedded in the beryl voids are oriented quite differently from the view established in the literature: Different from the earlier assumptions, their H-H lines deviate by about 18° from the hexagonal axis. We suggest that this is due to the molecules attaching to the oxygen atoms forming the beryl structural voids by a hydrogen bond. Our analysis shows that the molecules perform two types of movement: (i) rapid librations around the axis of the hydrogen bond and (ii) less frequent orientational jumps among the 12 possible binding sites in the beryl voids. The frequencies of the librational motions are evaluated from a simple thermodynamic model, providing good quantitative agreement with the frequencies of librations from optical experiments reported earlier.

The closest environment of Al 3+ cations was analyzed in detail in solutions of aluminum nitrate in the prototypical protic ionic liquid ethyl ammonium nitrate (EAN) using 1 H and 14 N nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. For Al (NO 3 ) 3 -EAN mixtures with different water content, a quantitative analysis of the integral intensities of the 1 H and 14 N signals was carried out and the composition of the first solvation shell of the aluminum cation was refined., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Due to endogamy, the Roma have a higher risk for autosomal recessive (AR) disorders. We used homozygosity mapping on single-nucleotide polymorphism chips in one Czech Roma consanguineous family with non-syndromic hearing loss (NSHL). The second largest homozygous region in a deaf patient was mapped to the previously reported DFNB49 region. The MARVELD2 gene was recently reported as a causal gene for NSHL DFNB49. Sequencing of the MARVELD2 gene revealed a previously reported homozygous mutation c.1331+2 T>C (IVS4 + 2 T>C) in the deaf child. Subsequently, the same mutation was found in two more Roma families from an additional 19 unrelated Czech Roma patients with deafness tested for the MARVELD2 gene. To explore the importance of MARVELD2 mutations and DFNB49 for the general Czech and Central European population with early hearing loss we also tested 40 unrelated Czech patients with AR NSHL. No pathogenic mutation in the MARVELD2 gene was found in a group of 40 Czech non-Roma patients. The spin reorientation temperature T(SR) of stoichiometric Fe(3)O(4), as well as of magnetite with a small number of vacancies and magnetite containing a low concentration of Ti, Zn, Al and Ga was measured on single-crystal samples using the ac susceptibility. In the same experiment the temperature T(V) of the Verwey transition was also found. The results show that a correlation between T(SR) and T(V) exists. The electronic structure of the compounds studied was determined using the density-functional-based GGA + U method. For stoichiometric magnetite the first and second cubic anisotropy constants were calculated, while for magnetite with defects the distribution of electron density using the 'atoms in molecules' approach was determined. Based on a combination of experimental results with the electronic structure calculations an explanation of the temperature dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of magnetite is suggested.
