Objectives Women with terminal cancer are assumed to choose hospice care over aggressive treatment at the end of life. With new chemotherapy and target therapy options, it becomes more difficult to decide between hospice care and aggressive management. It is also crucial to consider the cost increases leading to severe financial burdens on healthcare systems. To better understand treatment options at the individual level, this study set out to describe trends in end-of-life care for the four leading cancers in women in Taiwan. Study design This was a population-based retrospective cohort study. Methods The data source was obtained between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2013, from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. We identified 98,575 women with a diagnosis of breast (18,596), colorectal (23,734), liver and biliary (28,795) or lung (27,450) cancer who had died during the study period. Hospital data for services provided in the last 6 months of life, including hospice services and aggressive managements (chemotherapy, frequent hospitalisation, emergency room [ER] visits, intensive care unit [ICU] admission and endotracheal intubation), were collected. Results Hospice utilisation increased over the study period, with 25.85%, 25.34%, 21.23% and 26.55% of female patients with breast, colorectal, liver and biliary, and lung cancer receiving hospice care, respectively. However, the number of women undergoing aggressive treatments in the last 6 months of life remained high, with the breast cancer group having the highest chemotherapy rate, the colorectal cancer group having frequent hospitalisation and the liver and biliary cancer group having frequent ER visits and ICU admissions. Conclusions Increasing hospice utilisation among women with the four most common cancers in Taiwan indicates that hospice services have gradually become well accepted over the past 13 years; however, the real focus is on the ineffective treatment preceding hospice care, and late referral was also a notable problem.

Alloys with ultra-high strength and sufficient ductility are highly desired for modern engineering applications but difficult to develop. Here we report that, by a careful controlling alloy composition, thermomechanical process, and microstructural feature, a Co-Cr-Ni-based medium-entropy alloy (MEA) with a dual heterogeneous structure of both matrix and precipitates can be designed to provide an ultra-high tensile strength of 2.2 GPa and uniform elongation of 13% at ambient temperature, properties that are much improved over their counterparts without the heterogeneous structure. Electron microscopy characterizations reveal that the dual heterogeneous structures are composed of a heterogeneous matrix with both coarse grains (10∼30 μm) and ultra-fine grains (0.5∼2 μm), together with heterogeneous L12-structured nanoprecipitates ranging from several to hundreds of nanometers. The heterogeneous L12 nanoprecipitates are fully coherent with the matrix, minimizing the elastic misfit strain of interfaces, relieving the stress concentration during deformation, and playing an active role in enhanced ductility., Improving both strength and ductility simultaneously in structural metals and alloys remains a challenge. Here, the authors design a heterogeneous structure in a Co-Cr-Ni alloy that results in ultrahigh strength and significant uniform elongation.

Background Acral melanoma (AM) is the most common histopathological subtype of malignant melanoma in Asians. However, differences in the mutational profiles underlying AM and nonacral cutaneous melanoma (NAM) in Asians are not well understood. Objectives To augment the understanding of the prevalence, patterns and associations of various mutations between different subtypes of melanoma. Methods We performed comprehensive genomic profiling of 409 cancer-associated genes, using next-generation sequencing, in 66 primary melanomas comprised of 45 AMs and 21 NAMs. Results Most of the AMs (n = 27/45; 60%), but only five of 21 (24%) NAMs, were triple wild-type (triple-WT) tumours. Compared with AMs, NAMs exhibited a significantly higher frequency of BRAF mutations. The frequencies of NRAS/KRAS mutations, cell-cycle aberrations, copy number gains in BIRC2, BIRC3 and BIRC5, and gains of receptor tyrosine kinase genes were significantly higher in AMs. Ulceration was found at significantly higher rates in the AMs and NAMs with cell-cycle aberrations and gains of receptor tyrosine kinase genes. Notably, cell-cycle aberrations and copy number gains in BIRC2, BIRC3 and BIRC5 were significantly associated with poor melanoma-specific survival in the 66 patients with melanoma and especially in the 45 patients with AM. Multivariate analysis showed that lymph node metastasis and cell-cycle aberrations were independent prognostic factors of melanoma-specific survival. Conclusions This study strengthens our understanding of the patterns and clinical associations of oncogenic mutations in AMs and NAMs in Asians. What's already known about this topic? KIT mutations and copy number variations occur more frequently in the acral subtype of melanoma than in the nonacral subtype What does this study add? NRAS/KRAS mutations, cell-cycle aberrations, copy number gains in BIRC2, BIRC3 and BIRC5, and amplifications of receptor tyrosine kinase genes were significantly enriched in acral melanoma and could be potential targets for treatment. Melanomas with cell-cycle aberrations and gains in receptor tyrosine kinase genes were significantly more likely to contain ulceration. What is the translational message? Cell-cycle aberrations and copy number gains in BIRC2, BIRC3 and BIRC5 were significantly associated with poor melanoma-specific survival. These observations should be explored further for future drug development.

The dual channel Miniature optical Transmitter (MTx) is developed for the ATLAS Phase-I upgrade requiring durable performance in the Large Hadron Collider environment. The data transmission has achieved 8 Gbps per channel with a custom-designed LOCld laser driver and 850 nm VCSELs packaged in transmitter optical sub-assemblies (TOSAs). The performance of the MTx opto-electronics is evaluated. Accelerated aging tests of the VCSELs were conducted in a chamber at 85 °C, 85% relative humidity, with TOSA and bare-die samples prepared in non-hermetic condition. Radiation tolerance of the VCSELs was investigated with 30 MeV and 70 MeV protons. The radiation induced effects in data transmission were investigated for light-power degradation and parameters of eye-diagrams.

Purpose. To review bicycle and motorcycle wheel spoke injuries around the foot and ankle in 24 children. Methods. Medical records of 12 boys and 12 girls aged 2 to 11 (mean, 5.3) years who presented with an isolated posterior heel injury caused by wheel spokes of a motorcycle (n=9) or bicycle (n=15) were reviewed. Results. All 9 motorcycle injury patients and 8 of 15 bicycle injury patients had lacerations. The remaining 7 bicycle injury patients had abrasions and developed skin necrosis and ulcerations, with 5 requiring debridement. The most common site of laceration was the posterolateral heel; 7 of these patients had deep soft tissue injury, and in 5 the Achilles tendon was partially cut or completely severed. The mean number of operations was 2.2 in the motorcycle group and 1.3 in the bicycle group. Seven patients with severe skin loss required skin grafting or flap surgery for wound coverage. The mean time from injury to definitive treatment was 8.2 days. The mean length of hospital stay was 18.4 days in the motorcycle group and 8.1 days in the bicycle group. Delayed definitive treatment was associated with more operations (r=0.499, p=0.013) and longer hospital stay (r=0.567, p=0.004). Conclusion. Wheel spoke injuries may result in severe soft tissue damage and bony trauma. Poor prognostic factors included high-energy injury, contamination and infection, and delayed treatment.

To resolve the poor weldability of ductile irons, this study employed AISI 1008 low carbon steel in the pure ferrite phase as the top plate and ductile iron as the bottom plate and varied the rotational speeds combined with travelling speeds that ranged between 40 and 70 mm min−1 to conduct a friction stir lap welding test. In this study, the zinc oxide thin films were prepared by magnetron sputtering on alkali-free borosilicate glass substrates. The doping level of CuO in the ZnO targets varied from 2 to 10 at% during the preparation process to investigate its influence on the properties of ZnO films. All of CuO doped ZnO thin films grew along the preferential (002) crystal plane, with the diffraction intensity of (103) plane being lower at 4 at%, decreasing upon increasing the CuO concentration from 2 to 4 at% and increasing upon increasing the CuO concentration from 4 to 10 at%. The transmittance, as well as the optical band gap, in the wavelength range of visible light (400–700 nm) decreased upon increasing CuO concentration. The resistivity increased upon increasing CuO concentration, duo to the increasing Vo concentration and the increasing density of grain boundaries.

In proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), a low interfacial pressure between the bipolar plates and the membrane exchange assembly (MEA) results in a high contact resistance. Conversely, an excessive interfacial pressure reduces the porosity of the gas diffusion layer (GDLs) and may damage the proton exchange membrane (PEM). Consequently, the performance of a PEMFC is critically dependent upon the clamping method. Accordingly, this study emphasizes the development of a numerical methodology for analyzing clamping of a PEMFC and constructs a detailed three-dimensional (3D) full-scale finite element (FE) model of a PEMFC with the traditional and most popular point-load design as an example. The numerical method is first validated by experiments. A series of simulations are then performed on the example cases (i.e. 2-bolt, 4-bolt or 6-bolt) to analyze their behaviors on the contact pressure between the bipolar plates and the MEA and the corresponding effects on the GDL porosity and the contact resistance, under the constraints that the membrane and gaskets remain within their respective elastic limits and the porosity of the GDL has a value higher than 0.5. Overall, to complete the analysis procedures proposed in this paper, the results show that the six-bolt clamping mode with a tightening torque of 16 N-m achieves a uniform pressure distribution and a high interfacial pressure, and therefore represents the optimal clamping mode for the performed example cases.

In this study, a novel inflatable belt-type clamp is introduced and its performance is verified. Finite element simulations are performed to compare the performance of three different aorta clamping systems. In every case, the aorta is modeled as a simple hollow cylinder made of linearly elastic material. For a traditional surgical clamp in which the jaws remain inclined to one another as they close around the aorta, the maximum normal stress within the aorta wall is found to be 806kPa. It is shown that the numerical results are in good qualitative agreement with the experimental results obtained using a pressure sensitive film. The simulation results for a modified clamp in which the jaws remain parallel during the clamping operation show that the maximum normal stress is reduced to 222kPa. However, two regions of maximum stress are induced within the aorta wall. Finally, the numerical results for a novel inflatable belt-type clamp show that the maximum normal stress is equal to approximately 221kPa. In contrast to the modified clamp, the stress is uniformly distributed around the perimeter of the aorta, and thus the risk of aortic dissection is significantly reduced.

This nationwide surveillance of clinically important bacteria from the intensive care units (ICUs) of major teaching hospitals throughout Taiwan investigated the susceptibilities to doripenem and other comparator carbapenems from September through November 2005. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined for 1,311 clinical isolates using the broth microdilution method according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) 2005 guidelines. Doripenem showed similar (within four-fold difference of MICs) in vitro activity to meropenem for Enterobacteriaceae and probably comparable activity to meropenem against important nosocomial non-fermentative Gram-negative bacilli (NFGNBs), including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Burkholderia cepacia. Among the four carbapenems analysed, doripenem and meropenem exhibited better in vitro activity than imipenem or ertapenem against extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli isolates. However, the meropenem MIC(90) against ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae isolates was 2 microg/ml. Besides, doripenem with the MIC(90) of 0.5 microg/ml to Streptococcus pneumoniae possibly suggested its potential therapeutic effect regarding community-acquired pneumonia. Because of the heavy resistance burden in Taiwan, closely monitoring the evolutionary trend of carbapenem susceptibilities against clinically important pathogens is crucial in the future.

Background and purpose: Previous results have shown that mice lacking in the group 1B phospholipase A2 (Pla2g1b) are resistant to obesity and diabetes induced by feeding a diabetogenic high-fat/high-carbohydrate diet. This study examined the potential of using the Pla2g1b inhibitor methyl indoxam as therapy to suppress diet-induced obesity and diabetes. Experimental approach: Male C57BL/6 mice were fed the diabetogenic diet with or without methyl indoxam supplementation. Body weight gain, fasting plasma glucose levels, glucose tolerance and postprandial lysophospholipid absorption were compared. Key results: Wild-type C57BL/6 mice fed the diabetogenic diet without Pla2g1b inhibitor showed 31 and 69% body weight gain after 4 and 10 weeks respectively. These animals also showed elevated plasma glucose levels and were glucose intolerant. In contrast, C57BL/6 mice fed the diabetogenic diet with 90 mg·kg−1 of methyl indoxam gained only 5% body weight after 10 weeks. These animals were also euglycaemic and displayed normal glucose excursion rates in glucose tolerance test. Methyl indoxam suppression of diet-induced body weight gain and glucose intolerance was correlated with the inhibition of Pla2g1b-mediated postprandial lysophospholipid absorption. Conclusions and implications: These results show that oral supplementation of a diabetogenic diet with the Pla2g1b inhibitor methyl indoxam effectively suppresses diet-induced obesity and diabetes in mice. This suggests that Pla2g1b inhibition may be a potentially effective oral therapeutic option for treatment of obesity and diabetes.

A nationwide susceptibility surveillance of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae isolates collected from patients treated at the intensive care units (ICUs) of ten Taiwanese major teaching hospitals was conducted from September 2005 through November 2005. High rates of resistance (intermediate/resistant) of S. pneumoniae to penicillin (85% resistance), ceftriaxone (46%/20%), and cefepime (43%/15%) by meningitis criteria, and in contrast, non-susceptibilities (intermediate/resistant) to penicillin (0%/0%), ceftriaxone (20%/0%) and cefepime (15%/0%) by non-meningitis criteria were noted (p values < 0.05) by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute 2008. Resistant rate of S. pneumoniae to azithromycin was also high (63%). S. pneumoniae isolates were significantly more susceptible to ertapenem (87%) than to imipenem (39%) and meropenem (44%) (p values < 0.05). Rates of non-susceptibilities of H. influenzae isolates to ampicillin and cefaclor were high (55% and 45%, respectively). No beta-lactamase-negative ampicillin-resistant (BLNAR) H. influenzae isolates were found. Imipenem has a notably higher MIC(90) value (8 microg/ml) for H. influenzae than that of the other two carbapenems. Tigecycline showed good in vitro activities against these two respiratory pathogens. High rates of resistance among isolates of S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae continue to exist in the ICUs of Taiwan.

The sex pheromone communication system in moths is highly species-specific and extremely sensitive, and pheromone receptors (PRs) are thought to be the most important factors in males. In the present study, three full-length cDNAs encoding PRs were characterized from Sesamia inferens antennae. These three PRs were all male-specific in expression, but their relative expression levels were very different; SinfOR29 was 17- to 23-fold higher than the other two PRs. Phylogenetic and motif pattern analyses showed that these three PRs were allocated to different PR subfamilies with different motif patterns. Functional analysis using the heterologous expression system of Xenopus oocytes demonstrated that SinfOR29 specifically and sensitively responded to the major pheromone component, Z11-16:OAc [concentration for 50% of maximal effect (EC50 ) = 3.431 × 10(-7) M], while SinfOR21 responded robustly to a minor pheromone component Z11-16:OH (EC50 = 1.087 × 10(-6) M). SinfOR27, however, displayed no response to any of the three pheromone components, but, interestingly, it was sensitive to a non-sex pheromone component Z9,E12-14:OAc (EC50 = 1.522 × 10(-6) M). Our results provide insight into the molecular mechanisms of specificity and sensitivity of the sex pheromone communication system in moths.

The transcriptional repressor Tbx3 is involved in lineage specification in several tissues during embryonic development. Germ-line mutations in the Tbx3 gene give rise to Ulnar-Mammary Syndrome (comprising reduced breast development) and Tbx3 is required for mammary epithelial cell identity in the embryo. Notably Tbx3 has been implicated in breast cancer, which develops in adult mammary epithelium, but the role of Tbx3 in distinct cell types of the adult mammary gland has not yet been characterized. Using a fluorescent reporter knock-in mouse, we show that in adult virgin mice Tbx3 is highly expressed in luminal cells that express hormone receptors, and not in luminal cells of the alveolar lineage (cells primed for milk production). Flow cytometry identified Tbx3 expression already in progenitor cells of the hormone-sensing lineage and co-immunofluorescence confirmed a strict correlation between estrogen receptor (ER) and Tbx3 expression in situ. Using in vivo reconstitution assays we demonstrate that Tbx3 is functionally relevant for this lineage because knockdown of Tbx3 in primary mammary epithelial cells prevented the formation of ER+ cells, but not luminal ER- or basal cells. Interestingly, genes that are repressed by Tbx3 in other cell types, such as E-cadherin, are not repressed in hormone-sensing cells, highlighting that transcriptional targets of Tbx3 are cell type specific. In summary, we provide the first analysis of Tbx3 expression in the adult mammary gland at a single cell level and show that Tbx3 is important for the generation of hormone-sensing cells.

UNLABELLED In preclinical pharmacological studies of levobupivacaine (S-bupivacaine), we determined its tolerability, cardiovascular actions, and pharmacokinetics, and we estimated its margin of safety compared with bupivacaine in conscious sheep. Levobupivacaine HCl. H(2)O was infused IV for 3 min into 10 previously instrumented ewes (approximately 50 kg). On subsequent days, the doses were increased by 50 mg from 200 or 250 mg until fatality occurred. All doses produced convulsions, QRS widening, and cardiac arrhythmias. With incremental doses, 4 of 4 animals survived 200 mg, 7 of 10 survived 250 mg, 3 of 7 survived 300 mg, but 0 of 3 survived 350 mg. Death resulted from sudden onset ventricular fibrillation (n = 3, within 2-3 min), electromechanical dissociation-pump failure (n = 5, within 4-5 min), or ventricular tachycardia-induced cardiac insufficiency (n = 2, >10 min). The estimated fatal dose (mean +/- SD) was 277 +/- 51 mg for levobupivacaine (compared with 156 +/- 31 mg found previously for bupivacaine). Pharmacokinetic analysis indicated initial and total distribution volumes = 4.5 (+/-1.6) and 97 (+/-22) L, total clearance = 1.7 (+/-0.4) L/min, and slow half life = 70 (+/-29) min; these values did not differ from those found previously with smaller doses. Heart and brain tissue levobupivacaine concentrations were approximately 3 times those in arterial blood. The doses of levobupivacaine survived were larger than found previously for bupivacaine, indicating its greater margin of safety. IMPLICATIONS Levobupivacaine produced fatal cardiac toxicity at doses significantly greater than those found in previous studies with bupivacaine. As the two drugs have similar potency for producing clinical nerve blocks, the data imply that levobupivacaine should provide a safer alternative to bupivacaine in practice.

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between Freundlich isotherm coefficient l/n and the molecular properties of activated carbon adsorbent. The surface of the adsorbent was modified using nitric acid to produce different types and amounts of oxidized groups. These functional groups changed the electron density of graphite rings on the carbon surface. Isotherm data for the adsorption of PCP and PNP on the regular and modified activated carbon were obtained experimentally. Regression analyses showed that Freundlich coefficient l/n was affected by carboxyl groups stronger than three other groups – lactonized carboxyl, hydroxyl, and carbonyl. The results showed that Freundlich 1/n increased linearly with an increase in the amount of carboxyl groups. Molecular modeling using the CAChE program showed that the HOMO density at the adsorption site decreased linearly with an increase in the number of carboxyl groups. The results suggested that Freundlich 1/n could be estimated a priori based on the molecular structure of the adsorbent surface and the HOMO density of the adsorption site.

The E6 and E7 proteins of the high risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are consistently expressed in HPV-positive cervical carcinomas. We investigated the ability of HPV-16 E6 and E7 to disrupt mitotic checkpoints in normal diploid human cells. Acute expression of HPV-16 E6, but not HPV-16 E7, decreased the fidelity of multiple checkpoints controlling entry into and exit from mitosis. After irradiation, nearly 50% of cells containing HPV-16 E6 readily entered mitosis as opposed to less than 10% of control cells. Consistent with this, asynchronous populations of cells expressing HPV-16 E6 had increased cdc2-associated histone H1 kinase activity relative to control populations. In addition, HPV-16 E6 increased sensitivity to chemically-induced S-phase premature mitosis and decreased mitotic spindle assembly checkpoint function relative to control populations. HPV-16 E6 mutants with a reduced ability to target p53 for degradation were unable to abrogate mitotic checkpoints, suggesting a possible mechanism by which HPV-16 E6 disrupts mitotic checkpoints. Expression of a mutant p53 gene yielded an intermediate phenotype relative to HPV-16 E6, generating moderate increases in sensitivity to chemically-induced S-phase PCC and mitotic spindle disruption and a heightened propensity to enter mitosis after irradiation.

Given a set of data points with their positional, first- and second-order partial derivative values, we wish to construct a smooth surface which interpolates these values. The method requires triangulation of the data, and a rationally corrected quintic Bezier triangular patch scheme is then employed on each triangle. Each patch is rational of degree 9 over degree 4 but can be controlled by only 27 Bezier points. The data given enables us to determine appropriate Bezier control points so that adjacent patches meet with C 2 continuity.

While alendronate inhibits atherosclerosis experimentally, its effect on lower limb ischemia risk is unknown. Our results suggest that alendronate reduces the risk of lower limb ischemic vascular events requiring surgical interventions, including amputation. Our results are relevant for patients at risk of lower limb ischemia undergoing fragility fracture treatment.This study aimed to determine the association between alendronate therapy and the risk of lower limb ischemic vascular events (i.e., bypass surgery, endovascular stenting, and major lower limb amputation for lower limb ischemia).We used a nationwide population-based cohort of patients aged over 50 years diagnosed with a vertebral or hip fracture between January 1999 and June 2010. We compared the risk of lower limb ischemic vascular events between patients undergoing treatment with alendronate (n = 3,731) and an age- and sex-matched comparison group (n = 7,462) over 5 years of follow-up. Hazard ratios (HR) were estimated using Cox proportional regression analysis with adjustment for treatment status, comorbidities, and other variables.Ten patients (0.3 %) in the alendronate treatment group had a lower limb ischemic vascular event compared with 51 patients (0.7 %) in the comparison group. The incidence of lower limb ischemic vascular events was 8.4 (95 % CI, 4.0-15.5) per 10,000 person-years in the alendronate group and 21.8 (95 % CI, 16.2-28.7) per 10,000 person-years in the comparison group. The risk of a lower limb ischemic vascular event in the alendronate treatment group was lower (adjusted HR, 0.41; 95 % CI, 0.21-0.82).Alendronate treatment was associated with a reduced risk of lower limb ischemic vascular events among hip or vertebral fragility fracture patients.

Two parallel diffusion mechanisms, pore and surface, can control the rate of contaminant adsorption. The two mechanisms are different functions of temperature and adsorbate concentration. To develop a mechanistic design model for adsorption processes, the two mechanisms must be evaluated separately. In this paper, we show that the mechanisms can be separated accurately using a stepwise linearization technique. The technique can easily be incorporated in adsorption diffusion modeling. Two phenolic compounds were used in this study: p-chlorophenol (PCP) and p-nitrophenol (PNP). The application of the linearization technique is illustrated using two types of reactors: a completely mixed batch reactor and a differential reactor. The study results show that pore and surface diffusivity can be determined accurately using the linearization technique. Furthermore, the tortuosity for the adsorbent can be estimated from the pore diffusivity. For PCP that is strongly adsorbed by the adsorbent, surface diffusion is the dominant mechanism controlling the intraparticle transport. For weakly adsorbed PNP, neither surface nor pore diffusion is dominant.

Dose-response curves for dopexamine, isoprenaline, noradrenaline and impromidine on heart rate, blood pressure and myocardial contractility (dP/dt:integrated isometric tension) were obtained in untreated dogs and compared to those measured in dogs which had been pretreated with propranolol (8 mg kg-1 day-1), atenolol (6 mg kg-1 day-1), isoprenaline (0.5 microgram kg-1 min-1) or noradrenaline (0.5 microgram kg-1 min-1) for 14 days. 3. Propranolol pretreatment significantly enhanced the inotropic and chronotropic responses to isoprenaline. There were noticeable, but non-significant increases in inotropic sensitivity to noradrenaline and dopexamine, especially at higher dose levels. In the atenolol treatment group, there were significant increases in inotropic responses to dopexamine and isoprenaline and in depressor responses to isoprenaline. 4. Thus, chronic administration of propranolol increased responses mediated by both beta 1- and beta 2-adrenoceptors, whereas, atenolol selectively enhanced the inotropic responsiveness to dopexamine, which is mediated mainly by beta 2-adrenoceptors. 5. Isoprenaline pretreatment caused a significant decrease in inotropic sensitivity to dopexamine, isoprenaline and noradrenaline and a significant reduction in chronotropic responses to dopexamine. The tendency to reduced depressor responses to isoprenaline and dopexamine failed to reach significance. Pretreatment with noradrenaline decreased only the inotropic response to noradrenaline. 6. Thus, chronic isoprenaline treatment reduced the responsiveness of both beta 1- and beta 2-adrenoceptors, while chronic noradrenaline infusion only reduced beta 1-adrenoceptor-mediated responses. 7. There was no significant change in any of the dose-response curves to impromidine after any beta-adrenoceptor antagonist or agonist treatment. This indicates that there was no non-specific alteration in responsiveness and that the observed changes were likely to be associated with specific alterations in beta-adrenoceptor number or function.

A flexible branch body in a multibody chain undergoing large overall motions experiences geometric stiffening effects due to its own motions and interbody forces arising from bodies outboard of it. The self-motion effects are modelled through the use of 21 geometric stiffness matrices, in the literature, for an arbitrarily shaped flexible body. In this paper, the effect of interbody forces on the flexible body dynamics is modelled using up to 6 additional geometric stiffness matrices per outboard joint. Simulation results presented indicate that for a flexible body consisting of outboard bodies one may consider only the interbody force effects, without loss of accuracy, and thus significantly reduce the computational burden. This approach is especially suitable for multibody systems such as the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System, where the long boom masses are of similar magnitude, or when the payloads are several orders of magnitude larger than the link masses.

This paper presents a unified model that inter-relates gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, and hold-ups of each of the liquid, gas, and solid phases in three-phase, fluidized-bed biofilm (TPFBB) process. It describes how carrier properties, biofilm properties, and gas and liquid flow velocities control the system dynamics, which ultimately will affect the density, thickness, and distribution of the biofilm. The paper describes the development of the mathematical model to correlate the effects of gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, solid concentration, and biofilm thickness and density. This knowledge is critically needed in light of the use of TPFBB processes in treating industrial wastewater, which often has high substrate concentration. For example, the proper design of the TPFBB process requires mathematical description of the cause-effect relationship between biofilm growth and fluidization.

In the procedures described here, respiratory metabolism is estimated by direct determination of oxygen uptake, measured as a reduction in the dissolved oxygen tension (DOT) of cell suspensions or extracts. Continuous monitoring of DOT is achieved using a Clark-type oxygen electrode linked to a chart recorder. The volume of cell suspension required is of the order of 1 mL (0.5-1 mg cell protein mL) and the method is sufficiently sensitive to detect the consumption of a few nmol oxygen per mL. This sensitivity and the rapidity with which measurements may be made makes the technique particularly useful for the study of organisms, such as Helicobacter pylori, which give relatively poor growth yields and which, being microaerobic, are likely to be more susceptible to prolonged experimental procedures at high oxygen tensions.
