Background Left ventricular remodeling (LVR) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) may lead to poor prognosis in which circulating exosome miRNAs play a critical role. The aim of the present study is to identify specific exosome miRNAs for LVR in patients with STEMI. Method Plasma exosome miRNAs were assessed in 20 patients (90% male, mean age of 66.95±1.65 years) 3–6 months after STEMI and 24 healthy individuals (83% male, mean age of 33.2±0.93 years) by using qPCR. Of the 20 patients, 8 had post-STEMI LVR according to echocardiographic evaluation, and the others did not. Clinical biochemical data including total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, LDH and NT-pro-BNP were collected from the patients with STEMI at same time as exosome miRNAs assessment. Specific exosome miRNAs for LVR were identified by using qPCR. Correlations between the dysregulated exosome miRNAs and the clinical biochemical parameters in patients with STEMI were analyzed using spearman correlation test. Results Five exosome miRNAs including hsa-miR-181a-3p (p Conclusions Circulating exosome miR-181a-3p and let-7d-3p might play a potential role in LVR in patients 3–6 months after STEMI. A function polymer is considered to be a kind of potential Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) agent that can further enhance oil recovery after polymer flooding. Based on the typical geologic features and development history of the Daqing Oilfield, a function polymer displacement experiment was conducted using a 3D laboratory physical model with a high-permeability channel between the injection end and the production end to study the EOR mechanism of the function polymer solution. In this article, the displacement feature and oil/water distribution of function polymer flooding is presented, as well as the swept effect in pores of different sizes. The experimental results show that the function polymer flooding after regular polymer flooding further enhances oil recovery by 10.29%. An association between Candida and oral cancer has long been discussed in the literature and in particular Candida albicans has been proposed to play a significant role in the development of oral cancer. Although this organism is a common member of the oral mucosa and can cause a variety of oral mucosal lesions, the exact mechanisms by which C. albicans potentially causes the development of malignant disease still require much research. We have undertaken an extensive literature search to understand pathogenicity of C. albicans, including its virulence factors, its interactions with the host immune, how a dysregulation of the immune response can result in malignancy, and how a potential C. albicans specific cytokine response may be involved in oral carcinogenesis. We present here a candid assessment of the role of Candida in oral carcinogenesis and a hypothetical model about how this may occur. Finally, we present potential future research which is necessary to elucidate this role.

The authors describe a means to prolong gel time of Cr(Ac)3-polyacrylamide gel system by coating the Cr(Ac)3, forming the W1/O/W2 crosslinker. The white oil is the oil phase, and the sorbitol fatty acid esters are the water-in-oil emulsifier. The polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate is the oil-in-water emulsifier, which has a national patent (cf. Wang et al., 2009). Olfactory dysfunction is one of the common diseases in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology. Although the olfactory nerve has ability to regenerate in human central nervous system, if the damage involves nerve, only a few patients can restore the olfactory function. At present, there is no satisfactory treatment for sensorineural olfactory dysfunction. Therefore, it is urgent to explore new and effective method for treating sensorineural olfactory dysfunction. The progress of stem cells in the treatment of olfactory dysfunction is reviewed in this article.

To analyze the clinical characteristics, outcome and diagnosis of two cases of imported children Zika virus infection in China.A retrospective analysis was performed on clinical characteristics, treatment and outcome of two cases of imported children with Zika virus infection in February 2016 in Enping People's Hospital of Guangdong.Two cases of children with imported Zika virus infection resided in an affected area of Venezuela, 8-year-old girl and her 6 year-old brother. The main findings on physical examination included the following manifestations: fever, rash, and conjunctivitis. The rash was first limited to the abdomen, but extended to the torso, neck and face, and faded after 3-4 d. The total number of white blood cells was not high and liver function was normal. The diagnosis of two cases of Zika virus infection was confirmed by the expert group of Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the epidemiological history, clinical manifestations and Zika virus nucleic acid detection results.Treatment of Zika virus infection involves supportive care. Two Zika virus infection children had a relatively benign outcome.At present, Zika virus infection in children is an imported disease in China. No specific therapy is available for this disease. Information on long-term outcomes among infants and children with Zika virus disease is limited, routine pediatric care is advised for these infants and children.

To study the characteristics of blood lipids levels' change during pregnancy, and to discuss the relationships between the blood lipid level and the age, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes and other pregnancy complications.From January to September 2015, we enrolled 2 907 pregnant women admitted to our hospital for regular checks as control group, 190 cases in gestational hypertension group, 258 cases in gestational diabetes mellitus group. The control group was divided into first trimester (≤12 w) second trimester (20 to 26 w) and third trimester (≥28 w) groups; in second trimester group, patients were further divided into the certain age group (35years old) and elderly group (≥35 years old); blood lipid levels including serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were detected in all groups.(1) Blood lipids levels varied as pregnancy proceeded. TG level increased most significantly, followed by TC, LDL-C level. However, HDL-C level slightly decreased in third trimester comparing with first and second trimester stage, the difference was statistically significant (P0.05); (2) serum TC, TG and LDL-C level in second trimester were significantly higher in the certain age group than in the elder group (P0.05); (3) in gestational diabetes mellitus group, serum TC, TG, LDL-C levels were significantly higher in first and second trimester than those in the control group (P0.05); (4) in gestational hypertension group, serum TC, TG, LDL-C levels were significantly higher in third trimester than those in the control group (P0.05); HDL-C level was lower in the gestational hypertension group than in the control group, and there was statistically significant difference (P0.05).The blood lipid levels in pregnancy increase gradually as the gestational weeks increase, which can be explained as a normal physiological phenomenon. Elder pregnancy, gestational hypertension and gestational diabetes mellitus patients usually have obvious blood lipid disorder, therefore, it is very important to monitor the blood lipid level during pregnancy stages for predicting and early intervention of pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes mellitus and gestational hypertension.

To evaluate the hemodynamics of maxillary artery (MA), superficial temporal artery (STA) and ophthalmic artery (OA), and evaluate the hemodynamics prediction capability of these arteries formed compensatory arteries into intracranial using Doppler ultrasonography.The evaluation of MA, STA, and OA with transcranial doppler ultrasonography and with cerebral angiography was made in 106 MMD patients (total of 212 hemispheres of the brain), 58 male and 48 female, aged 39.3±12.0 years old. Doppler ultrasonography measured the following blood flow parameters: peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), and resistance index (RI). DSA evaluate whether MA, STA, OA formed compensatory arteries into intracranial. Based on the compensation situation, the patients were divided into two groups: compensatory group and non-compensatory group. The differences of patient's hemodynamic parameters between compensatory and non-compensatory groups were performed using independent two-sample t-tests with equal or non-equal variance as appropriate. Categorical variables were summarized using frequency and percentage and compared using Chi-square tests. We evaluated the prediction ability of each hemodynamic parameters for each artery (combining left and right side) using Receiver Operating Curve. All the analyses were performed using SAS 9.4 (Cary, NC).Comparing the hemodynamic parameters between the compensatory group and non-compensatory group, all hemodynamic parameters of MA, STA and OA have statistically significant differences between the two groups. Depending on the ROC Curve, EDV (AUC=0.6933±0.0463) for MA, RI (AUC=0.8910±0.0569) for STA, EDV (AUC=0.7863± 0.0330) for OA are better predictors of compensatory growth.Color duplex ultrasonography is a reliable, noninvasive and economic tool to assess hemodynamic changes of MA, STA and OA, and has prediction capability of these arteries formed compensatory arteries into intracranial.

Activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) plays an important role in the development of liver fibrosis. The eukaryotic translation initiation factor (eIF) 3a is the largest subunit of the eIF3 complex and has been involved in pulmonary fibrosis. However, the role of eIF3a in liver fibrosis remains largely unknown. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the role of eIF3a in transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1)-induced HSC activation. Our results demonstrated that the expression of eIF3a was up-regulated in human liver fibrotic tissues and activated HSCs. In addition, knockdown of eIF3a suppressed TGF-β-induced HSC proliferation and the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and collagen I. Furthermore, knockdown of eIF3a inhibited the expression of p-Smad3 induced by TGF-β1 in HSCs. These results suggest that eIF3a may function as a novel regulator to modulate HSC activation, potentially through inhibiting the TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway.

An newborn boy showed multiple skin lumps at birth. On examination, there were disseminated red cobblestone-like skin neoplasms, 5-30mm in diameter with hard serosanguineous crust, some were with scabs, over the scalp, face, trunk and extremities (Fig. 1A,B). The liver was 3 cm palpable below the costal margin. He was active and stable. The mother’ prenatal investigation on antibodies of rubella, herpes simplex virus (HSV) and hepatitis B surface antigen were positive. The baby's antibodies for HAV, HBV, HCV, rubella, HSV, HIV and syphilis were negative. Blood cultures were negative. High epitaxial quality BaTiO3 films were deposited on the MgO (001) substrate using RF magnetron sputtering at 800 °C by manipulating processing parameters. The BaTiO3 films have a ~200 nm thickness with a very low surface roughness but a rough interface structure with respect to the substrate. The epitaxial BaTiO3 films have a tetragonal crystal structure (a = 4.02 A and c = 4.11 A) with a tetragonality (c/a) of 1.02. The c-axis of the film is parallel to the growth direction as characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The orientation relationship between the film and the MgO is (001)BTO//(001)MgO and 〈100〉BTO//〈100〉MgO. Epitaxial nanodomains were formed in the film with a size ranging from 3 to 20 nm. The formation of the nanodomains is associated with the rough film/substrate interface due to the modification of the substrate surface characteristics (steps, terraces, and kinks) during the process. The two-dimensional interface structure between the film and the substrate was studied and its influence on the film microstructure is discussed.

The structure of (±)-2-[(1S,3S)-3-acetyl-2,2-dimethylcyclobutyl]-N-(p-tolyl)acetamide has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystal belongs to triclinic system, space group P-1, a = 8.8700(18) A, b = 10.331(2) A, c = 10.363(2) A, α = 71.11(3)°, β = 65.06(3)°, γ = 72.18(3)°, V = 798.6(3) A3, Z = 2, formula unit C17H23NO2. The title compound has a fragment of 2,2-dimethylcyclo-butane and its conformation represents semi-chair. The intermolecular hydrogen bonds N-H...O and C-H...O are revealed.

The nanoparticles of Yb3+-doped (0.125 wt.%) and pure TiO2 were prepared by an acid-catalyzed sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and surface photovoltage spectroscopy; the specific surface of the samples was measured using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution was used as a probe reaction to estimate the photocatalytic activity of the prepared nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activity of Yb3+/TiO2 composite nanoparticles is much higher than that of pure TiO2. A low amount of Yb3+ in TiO2 can inhibit the anatase-rutile phase transformation of TiO2, prevent grain growth increasing the specific surface area, and favor the high-temperature stabilization of the pores. According to the surface voltage spectroscopy data, Tb3+-doping prevents recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes and improves the light absorption capacity of the particle surface.

Cell-free yeast extract has been successfully used to catalyze the enzymatic formation of 11 out of the 14 naturally occurring modified nucleotides in yeast tRNAPhe(anticodon GAA). They are m2G10, D17, m22G26, Cm32, Gm34,psi39, m5C40, m7G46, m5C49, T54 andpsi55. Only D16, Y37 and m1A58 were not formed under in vitro conditions. However, m1G37was quantitatively produced instead of Y37. The naturally occurring intron was absolutely required for m5C40formation while it hindered completely the enzymatic formation of Cm32, Gm34and m1G37. Enzymatic formation of m22G26,psi39, m7G46, m5C49, T54 andpsi55were not or only slightly affected by the presence of the intron. These results allow us to classify the different tRNA modification enzymes into three groups: intron insensitive, intron dependent, and those requiring the absence of the intron. The fact that truncated tRNAPheconsisting of the anticodon stem and loop prolonged with the 19 nucleotide long intron is a substrate for tRNA: cytosine-40 methylase demonstrates that the enzyme is not only strictly intron dependent, but also does not require fully structured tRNA.

To modify the design of the Achilles tendon-scar composite flap into the Z-shape and to apply it into clinic situations to correct the tendon-scar contracture after burn and other injures.According to degree of contracture and strephenopedia, the central limb of Z-shaped design lay in contracture line of posterior ankle area just over the Achilles tendon and extended 8 to 12 cm in length. Lateral limbs extended 5 to 8 cm and usual angles of the Z-shape was 60 degrees. The two tendon-scar composite flaps were made and slipped along the central limb between them. From March 1994 to August 1999, seven patients with Achilles tendon scar contracture were operated with this method.Excellent relieving of the Achilles tendon-scar contractue was achieved. No such complications happened as ischemia and necrosis of the flaps.The Z-shaped tendon-scar composite flap is practical in clinics. It is characterized by abundant blood supply, easily procedure and reliable result.

Two ligand oligopeptides GV1 and GV2 were designed according to the putative binding region of VEGF to its receptors. GV1, GV2 and endosome releasing oligopeptide HA20 were conjugated with poly-L-lysine or protamine and the resulting conjugates could interact with DNA in a noncovalent bond to form a complex. Using pSV2-beta-galactosidase as a reporter gene, it has been demonstrated that exogenous gene was transferred into bovine aortic arch-derived endothelial cells (ABAE) and human malignant melanoma cell lines (A375) in vitro. In vivo experiments, exogenous gene was transferred into tumor vascular endothelial cells and tumor cells of subcutaneously transplanted human colon cancer LOVO, human malignant melanoma A375 and human hepatoma graft in nude mice. This system could also target gene to intrahepatically transplanted human hepatoma injected via portal vein in nude mice. These results are correlated with the relevant receptors (flt-1, flk-1/KDR) expression on the targeted cells and tissues.

This is the first report to describe the presence of an HBV-like DNA sequence in two hepatoma and their tumor surrounding liver tissues, one precancerous and one non-malignant liver tissue of ducks collected from Qidong County of China. The HBV-like sequences were either in an episomal form of 3.2 kb or in an integrated form of various sizes, while the DHBV DNA sequences (3.0 kb) were either present or absent in these tissues and in different size pattern. Furthermore, there was no evidence of cross-hybridization between HBV-like DNA sequences in duck and DHBV DNA. A 3.2 kb HBV-like DNA sequence has been cloned from one duck hepatoma (40 K), designated as pDKHBV. The 3218 bp full-length nucleotide sequence of this clone has been determined, which had no apparent homology with Duck Hepatitis B Virus (DHBV) genome, but was highly homologous to human HBV adw2 subtype (99.0%). The sequence was composed of four open reading frames for HBV gene Pre-S/S, X, C and P respectively. In addition to multiple sites of point mutation, one nt and two nt deletion were detected downstream the initiation codon of Pre-S1 gene and at the 3' end of C gene respectively, thereby suggesting a frameshift mutation in Pre-S gene and C gene. Based on these results, it was implicated that an unusual HBV variant might exist in Qidong County, which might have transmitted into duck through some yet unknown mechanisms. The possibility from exogenous contamination could be thus excluded.

Acute volume loading produced by autogenous reinfusion of ascitic fluid provides an ideal volume expansion model for studying hormonal regulation and it was carried out in 10 cirrhotic patients with massive ascites. The basal plasma ANP level in the cirrhotic patients with ascites was 1776.00 +/- 160.72 ng/L, which was significantly elevated as compared with the level in normal controls (378.36 +/- 39.58 ng/L, P less than 0.01), PRA was significantly higher in patients with ascites (5.13 +/- 0.18 micrograms/l/h) than in healthy volunteers (1.46 +/- 0.31 micrograms/l/h, P less than 0.01). During reinfusion of ascitic fluid there was a significant natriuresis and diuresis; ANP rose from a basal mean value to a peak value of 2166.00 +/- 195.70 ng/l (P less than 0.05) at periinfusion. Subsequently, ANP dropped at 1 hour after infusion (1819.00 +/- 165.92ng/L, P less than 0.05), PRA dropped progressively from a mean basal level to that of 2.48 +/- 0.58 micrograms/l/h (P less than 0.05) at periinfusion. These data demonstrate that there is no evidence for absolute deficiency of ANP in cirrhosis with ascites. The immediate diuresis and natriuresis were associated with a rise in ANP, but the sustained renal consequences may be possibly connected with suppression of RAAS.

From a subtracting cDNA library constructed from normal liver versus human primary hepatic cancer (PHC) a cDNA clone pG8 was isolated. Using it as a probe, RNA extracted from one human liver and 9 PHC samples were analyzed by Northern hybridization. As expected, its mRNA was highly expressed in liver; however, the expression was strikingly suppressed in PHC. Only weak signal was observed in 2 out of 9 PHC, while no signal was detectable in the other 7 samples. Utilizing pG8 as a probe, DNA from the same PHC specimens was analyzed after MspI digestion and Southern hybridization. Deletion of DNA fragment was observed in 4 out of 9 samples. In further study of cancer and non-cancerous liver from other 7 PHC patients, similar deletion of DNA fragments in cancer was observed in 4 out of 7 samples. After sequencing of the clone of 572 bp, it was unexpectedly found that pG8 was completely homologous to the coding sequence of transthyretin, TTR gene, as TTR (or prealbumin) gene has been known to be linked to a hereditary disorder, familial amyloidosis (FAP), and related to thyroxine transport and binding to retinol-RBP (the retinol binding protein) complex. This is the first report of a study on TTR in human primary hepatic cancer. Since TTR gene was strikingly suppressed in mRNA expression and possibly defective in its gene structure, it was strongly implicated that TTR might be an important gene marker or a candidate of anti-oncogene for human PHC. The biological activity of TTR gene is under study.

A patient with an infection with the L-form of Staphylococcus aureus occurring in burn wounds is reported. The authors conclude that the infection was attributable to a decrease in the host immunological functions and repeated administration of antibiotics resulting in the development of bacterial L-forms

DNA was extracted from NIH 3T3 cells transformed with DNAs from human primary hepatic cancer (PHC) and Hepatoma 7402 cell line. The transformant DNA was analyzed by Southern transfer and hybridization with 32P-labeled probes of various oncogenes. The EcoRI 7.2 and 9.0 kb bands characteristic of human N-ras gene were identified in transformed NIH 3T3 cells derived both from PHC and 7402 DNA. The BamHI 6.6 kb band characteristic of human c-Ha-ras I was present only in 7402 transformants, but not in PHC transformants. Using 35S-methionine incorporation, immunoprecipitation with anti-p21 monoclonal antibodies, SDS-PAGE and autoradiography, it was demonstrated that p21 synthesis was remarkably enhanced in 7402 cells as well as in transformed cells derived from both 7402 and PHC DNA. Taking the data together, it strongly implies that N-ras is one of the transforming genes for human liver cancer.

The transfection of NIH 3T3 cells was performed with DNAs from 2 duck primary hepatic carcinomas (DHC 40K, 9K) and 1 tumor-adjacent liver tissue (TAL, 9N). Transfectants were found from 40K, 9K and 9N DNAs. The secondary transfectants were obtained after transfection of RAT-1 cells with DNAs from primary transfectants. After hybridization with Ha-ras, Ki-ras, N-ras and mht oncogenes, it was found that duck mht (5.2 and 3.2 kb EcoRI fragments) and duck Ha-ras (3.4 kb EcoRI fragments) were present in all these transformants. This is the first report on transforming genes in duck primary hepatic cancer as well as tumor-adjacent liver tissue.
