trans -1,2-Cyclohexanediamine, -diether, and -amino ether were compared as chiral inducers in the asymmetric intramolecular carbolithiation of olefinic aryllithiums. Switching from diamine to ethereal ligands inverts the sense of asymmetric induction. This reversal of stereoselectivity was investigated through density functional theory calculations. High enantioselectivities observed with diether and amino ether ligands arise from favorable weak interactions between the ligand and the substrate. The relative efficiency of the three ligands and sense of stereoinduction for the most efficient diether and amino ether ligands prove to be foreseeable by modeling the reaction with the parent achiral 1,2-bidentate additives and comparing the diastereomeric transition states stemming from the two half-chair conformations of their lithium chelate.

The recent progresses of the application of trifluoromethanesulfonyl chloride, CF 3 SO 2 Cl, in the formation of C-CF 3 , C-SCF 3 , C-SOCF 3 , and C-Cl bonds are summarised in this second part of a two-part review published back-to-back on both sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate, CF 3 SO 2 Na, (Part 1) and trifluoromethanesulfonyl chloride, CF 3 SO 2 Cl (Part 2). There are many reactions in common between these two reagents but it should be noted that CF 3 SO 2 Cl reacts under reductive conditions while CF 3 SO 2 Na requires oxidative conditions. Electrophilic chlorination is obviously the exclusive preserve of CF 3 SO 2 Cl that has been exploited with emphasis in enantioselective chlorination.

Sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate, CF 3 SO 2 Na, and trifluoromethanesulfonyl chloride, CF 3 SO 2 Cl, are two popular reagents that are widely used for the direct trifluoromethylation of a large range of substrates. Further, these two reagents are employed for the direct trifluoromethylsulfenylation and trifluoromethylsulfinylation, the introduction of the SCF 3 and the S(O)CF 3 group, respectively. In addition to the aforementioned reactions, the versatility of these two reagents is presented in other reactions such as sulfonylation and chlorination. This first part is dedicated to sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate.

The association of host-guest and coordination chemistry was used to develop a fluorescent molecular sensor. A calix[6]arene bearing three imidazole arms at the small rim and three quinoline fluorophores at the large rim was synthesized and characterized. A two-step coordination sequence was observed upon addition of Zn II . The first Zn II center binds the tris-imidazole small rim site, leading only to a small perturbation of the fluorescence. In contrast, a large bathochromic shift is observed upon binding of the second Zn II center at the large rim as a result of the direct interaction of Zn II with the quinoline fluorophores. The system acts as a selective receptor for primary amines. Host-guest adduct formation could be identified by a shift and enhancement of the fluorescence emission that is dependent on the length and shape of the primary amine. Network Analysis is considered as a new method that challenges Latent Variable models in inferring psychological attributes. With Network Analysis, psychological attributes are derived from a complex system of components without the need to call on any latent variables. But the ontological status of psychological attributes is not adequately defined with Network Analysis, because a psychological attribute is both a complex system and a property emerging from this complex system. The aim of this article is to reappraise the legitimacy of latent variable models by engaging in an ontological and epistemological discussion on psychological attributes. Psychological attributes relate to the mental equilibrium of individuals embedded in their social interactions, as robust attractors within complex dynamic processes with emergent properties, distinct from physical entities located in precise areas of the brain. Latent variables thus possess legitimacy, because the emergent properties can be conceptualized and analyzed on the sole basis of their manifestations, without exploring the upstream complex system. However, in opposition with the usual Latent Variable models, this article is in favor of the integration of a dynamic system of manifestations. Latent Variables models and Network Analysis thus appear as complementary approaches. New approaches combining Latent Network Models and Network Residuals are certainly a promising new way to infer psychological attributes, placing psychological attributes in an inter-subjective dynamic approach. Pragmatism-realism appears as the epistemological framework required if we are to use latent variables as representations of psychological attributes.

A new class of chiral 1,2-amino ether ligands, readily accessible from naturally occurring α-amino- or α-hydroxy acids, was found to provide high levels of both conversion and stereocontrol (up to 95:5 er) in intramolecular carbolithiation reactions, outperforming the benchmark ligand (-)-sparteine. The ligand could be used in a substoichiometric amount (0.25 equiv) without significant loss of enantioselectivity.

In this work, we report an affordable, sensitive, fast and user-friendly electroanalytical method for monitoring the binding between unlabeled RNA and small compounds in microliter-size droplets using a redox-probe and disposable miniaturized screen-printed electrochemical cells.

In psychiatry and psychology, relationship patterns connecting disorders and risk factors are always complex and intricate. Advanced statistical methods have been developed to overcome this issue, the most common being structural equation modelling (SEM). The main approach to SEM (CB-SEM for covariance-based SEM) has been widely used by psychiatry and psychology researchers to test whether a comprehensive theoretical model is compatible with observed data. While the validity of this approach method has been demonstrated, its application is limited in some situations, such as early-stage exploratory studies using small sample sizes. The partial least squares approach to SEM (PLS-SEM) has risen in many scientific fields as an alternative method that is especially useful when sample size restricts the use of CB-SEM. In this article, we aim to provide a comprehensive introduction to PLS-SEM intended to CB-SEM users in psychiatric and psychological fields, with an illustration using data on suicidality among prisoners. Researchers in these fields could benefit from PLS-SEM, a promising exploratory technique well adapted to studies on infrequent diseases or specific population subsets.
