The researcher carried out a study of the relationship between environmental stress, marital communication and marital adjustment in couples. She also studied the differences between process in the mentioned variables. The sample consisted of (30) husbands and (30) wives. the researcher applied the environmental stress, marital communication, and marital adjustment scales. The result showed that: 1) There is no significant difference between spouses in marital adjustment. 2) There is statistically significant difference between spouses in environmental stress in the take of husbands. 3) Wives are statistically significant higher in communication skills. 4) There is a negative statistically significant correlation between environmental stress and marital adjustment. 5) There is a negative statistically significant correlation between environmental stress and marital communication. 6) There is a positive statistically significant correlation between marital communication and marital adjustment.

Manuscript received 22 October 1973 ; acepted 23 May 1974. \(Cis \)(Ph/Ar)-5-Aryl-3-ethoxycarbonyl-4-phenyl-pent-4-enoic acids were converted into ethyl \(trans\)-(Ph/Ar)- 5-aryl-3-carboxy-4-phenyl-pent-4-enoute (14), (15) and (16), which have been cyclised to 1-acetoxy-naphthalenes (17), (18) and (19). \(Cis\) (Ph/ Ar)-4, 5-Diphenyl- and cis (Ph/Ar)-4-phenyl-5-p-tolyl-pent-4-enoic acid anhydrides were converted with aluminium chloride to a mixture of the corresponding cyclopentenones and arylidene tetralone carboxylic acids. \(Trans \)(Ph/CO2Et)-5-Aryl-3-ethoxycarbonyl-4-phenyl-pent-3-enolc acids were cyclised to ethyl 4-acetoxY-1-arylmethyl-2-naphthoates.

This study was carried out to evaluate the biochemical and histopathological effects of dietary supplementation of Nigella sativa and Mentha piperita oils to broilers for 6 weeks. A total 80 unsexed one day old Cobb broiler chicks was obtained from Cairo Company with average body weight 55g were used .The chicks were taken and randomly allocated into 4 equal groups (20 each) named control, Nigella sativa oil treated group, Mentha piperita oil treated group and Nigella sativa + Mentha piperita oils treated group. Serum samples and tissue samples (liver and kidney) were obtained at 21 and 42 days old for some serum biochemical analysis (ALT, AST and ALP activities; creatinine, Urea, Total protein and Albumin levels) and histopathological examination (Liver and Kidney processed slide sections). The obtained results indicated that dietary supplementation of broilers diet with Nigella sativa, Mentha piperita and their combination for long period (6 weeks) couldn’t alter liver and kidney functions as cleared from biochemical findings but could caused slight hepatic and renal histopathological changes as showed from histopathological examination.

Hyper- and hypoglycaemias are known side effects of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, resulting in a number of fatalities. Fluoroquinolone-induced hypoglycaemias are due to stimulated insulin release by the inhibition of the KATP channel activity of the beta cell. Recently, it was found that fluoroquinolones were much less effective on metabolically intact beta cells than on open cell preparations. Thus the intracellular effects of gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin and ciprofloxacin were investigated by measuring NAD(P)H- and FAD-autofluorescence, the mitochondrial membrane potential, and the adenine nucleotide content of isolated pancreatic islets and beta cells. 100 μM of moxifloxacin abolished the NAD(P)H increase elicited by 20mM glucose, while gatifloxacin diminished it and ciprofloxacin had no significant effect. This pattern was also seen with islets from SUR1 Ko mice, which have no functional KATP channels. Moxifloxacin also diminished the glucose-induced decrease of FAD-fluorescence, which reflects the intramitochondrial production of reducing equivalents. Moxifloxacin, but not ciprofloxacin or gatifloxacin significantly reduced the effect of 20mM glucose on the ATP/ADP ratio. The mitochondrial hyperpolarization caused by 20mM glucose was partially antagonized by moxifloxacin, but not by ciprofloxacin or gatifloxacin. Ultrastructural analyses after 20 h tissue culture showed that all three compounds (at 10 and 100 μM) diminished the number of insulin secretory granules and that gatifloxacin and ciprofloxacin, but not moxifloxacin induced fission/fusion configurations of the beta cell mitochondria. In conclusion, fluoroquinolones affect the function of the mitochondria in pancreatic beta cells which may diminish the insulinotropic effect of KATP channel closure and contribute to the hyperglycaemic episodes.

The first phase of glucose-induced insulin secretion is generally regarded to represent the release of a finite pool of secretion-ready granules, triggered by the depolarization-induced influx of Ca2+ through L-type Ca2+ channels. However, the experimental induction of insulin secretion by imposed plasma membrane depolarization may be more complicated than currently appreciated. A comparison of the effects of high K+ concentrations with those of KATP channel closure, which initiates the electrical activity of the beta cell, suggests that 40 mM K+, which is a popular tool to produce a first phase-like secretion, is of supraphysiological strength, whereas the 20 mV depolarization by 15 mM K+ is nearly inefficient. A major conceptual problem consists in the occurrence of action potentials during KATP channel closure, but not during K+ depolarization, which leaves the K+ channel conductance unchanged. Recent observations suggest that the signal function of the endogenously generated depolarization is not homogeneous, but may rather differ between the component mainly determined by KATP channel closure (slow waves) and that mainly determined by Ca2+ influx (action potentials).

The K(+) channel blocker, TEA is known to increase action potential amplitude and insulin secretion of mouse beta-cells when added to a nutrient secretagogue. In the presence of a maximally effective sulfonylurea concentration (2.7 microM glipizide) the nutrient secretagogue alpha-ketoisocaproic acid (KIC, 10mM) strongly increased insulin secretion (about elevenfold). Instead of enhancing the effect of KIC, TEA reduced the KIC-induced secretion by more than 50%. Also, the secretion rate produced by 2.7 microM glipizide alone was significantly reduced by TEA. In contrast, TEA enhanced the insulinotropic effect of glipizide when a basal glucose concentration (5mM) was present. In the presence as well as in the absence of glucose glipizide produced a plateau depolarization with superimposed action potentials. Under both conditions, TEA increased the glipizide-induced action potential amplitude and further elevated the cytosolic free calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) with an oscillatory characteristic. These effects depended on the activity of L-type Ca(2+) channels, even though the effect of TEA differed from that of 1 microM of the Ca(2+) channel opener, Bay K8644, which primarily increased action potential duration. TEA did not negatively affect parameters of beta-cell energy metabolism (NAD(P)H fluorescence and ATP/ADP ratio), rather, it slightly increased NAD(P)H fluorescence. Apparently, TEA inhibits insulin secretion in the absence of glucose in spite of a persistent ability to block K(+) ion conductance. Thus, the signalling role of action potential depolarization in insulin secretion may require reconsideration and ion conductance-independent actions of K(+) channels may be involved in this paradox effect of TEA.

Summary Effect of ice and cold storage at 4°C on the chemical and technological characteristics of one of red local Egyptian crab (Carcinw meanas) has been studied. Such studies involved the determinations of pH values, moisture, total nitrogen, protein nitrogen, ether extract, acid value, thiobarbituric acid value (TBA) and total bacterial count (TC). It has been found that the shelf life of ice stored crabs was 2 days. Raw crabs stored at 4°C can be kept without any deterioration for 8 days. Dipping of raw crab in 20 ppm chlorotetracycline (CTC) for 20 min raised the keeping period at 4°C up to 11 days. Cooked crabs can be stored at 4°C without any spoilage for 14 days. However, dipping of cooked crabs in 20 ppm of CTC for 20 min increased the keeping period to 17 days.

The β-cell metabolism of glucose and of some other fuels (e.g. α-ketoisocaproate) generates signals triggering and acutely amplifying insulin secretion. As the pathway coupling metabolism with amplification is largely unknown, we aimed to narrow down the putative amplifying signals.An experimental design was used which previously prevented glucose-induced, but not α-ketoisocaproate-induced insulin secretion. Isolated mouse islets were pretreated for one hour with medium devoid of fuels and containing the sulfonylurea glipizide in high concentration which closed all ATP-sensitive K(+) channels. This concentration was also applied during the subsequent examination of fuel-induced effects. In perifused or incubated islets, insulin secretion and metabolic parameters were measured.The pretreatment decreased the islet ATP/ADP ratio. Whereas glucose and α-ketoisovalerate were ineffective or weakly effective, respectively, when tested separately, their combination strongly enhanced the insulin secretion. Compared with glucose, the strong amplifier α-ketoisocaproate caused less increase in NAD(P)H-fluorescence and less mitochondrial hyperpolarization. Compared with α-ketoisovalerate, α-ketoisocaproate caused greater increase in NAD(P)H-fluorescence and greater mitochondrial hyperpolarization. Neither α-ketoacid anion enhanced the islet ATP/ADP ratio during onset of the insulin secretion. α-Ketoisocaproate induced a higher pyruvate content than glucose, slowly elevated the citrate content which was not changed by glucose and generated a much higher acetoacetate content than other fuels. α-Ketoisovalerate alone or in combination with glucose did not increase the citrate content.In β-cells, mitochondrial energy generation does not mediate acute metabolic amplification, but mitochondrial production of acetyl-CoA and supplemental acetoacetate supplies cytosolic metabolites which induce the generation of specific amplifying signals.

Antimicrobial fluoroquinolones induce, with strongly varying frequency, life-threatening hypoglycemias, which is explained by their ability to block K(ATP) channels in pancreatic B-cells and thus to initiate insulin secretion. In apparent contradiction to this, we observed that none of the fluoroquinolones in this study (gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and a number of fluorophenyl-substituted compounds) initiated insulin secretion of perifused mouse islets when the glucose concentration was basal (5mM). Only when the glucose concentration was stimulatory by itself (10mM), the fluoroquinolones enhanced secretion. The fluoroquinolones were ineffective on SUR1 Ko islets, which do not have functional K(ATP) channels. All of these fluoroquinolones depolarized the membrane potential of mouse B-cells (patch-clamping in the whole-cell mode). Using metabolically intact B-cells (perforated-patch mode) however, 100microM of gatifloxacin, ciprofloxacin or moxifloxacin were unable to depolarize when the glucose concentration was 5mM, whereas other K(ATP) channel blockers (tolbutamide and efaroxan) remained effective. Only at a very high concentration (500microM) gatifloxacin and moxifloxacin, but not ciprofloxacin induced repetitive depolarizations which could be antagonized by diazoxide. In the presence of 10mM glucose all fluoroquinolones which enhanced secretion markedly elevated cytosolic calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)). In the presence of 5mM glucose gatifloxacin and moxifloxacin at 500microM but not at 100microM elevated [Ca(2+)](i). It is concluded that fluoroquinolones in the clinically relevant concentration range are not initiators, but rather enhancers of glucose-induced insulin secretion. The block of K(ATP) channels appears necessary but not sufficient to explain the hypoglycemic effect of fluoroquinolones.

Effects of frozen storage at −10 °C on the chemical and technological characteristics of one of famous red Egyptian shore crabs (Carcinus meanas) has been studied. Such studies involved the determination of: pH-value, moisture, total nitrogen, protein nitrogen, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-V), diethyl ether extract, acid value, thiobarbituric acid value (TBA) and total bacterial count (TC). It was found that the peeled raw and cooked crabs can be kept at −10 °C for 3 and 5 months, respectively without any spoilage. Unpeeled raw crabs can be preserved at −10 °C for 4 months without any deterioration. Dipping of unpeeled raw crabs in 20 ppm chlorotetracycline (CTC) for 20 min raised the keeping period up to 5 months. In general, prolonged frozen storage at −10 °C markedly affected the chemical and technological characteristics of crab meat.
