We compared clinical data, EEG, and video-EEG studies in a consecutive series of 20 patients with postictal psychosis (PP) to 150 consecutive epilepsy patients with complex partial (CPS) or generalized tonic-clonic (GTCS) seizures but without PP. There was a lucid interval between last seizure and onset of psychosis ranging from 2.3 to 72 h (mean, 25 h). Duration of PP ranged from 16 to 432 h (mean, 83 h). Age, sex, epilepsy type (partial vs. generalized), and history of febrile seizures were similar in the PP and control groups. Patients with PP had more frequent GTCS during monitoring than controls (2.8 vs. 1.3; P < 0.001). Patients with PP were more likely to have a history of encephalitis (P < 0.0001) and psychiatric hospitalization (P < 0.002). More patients with PP had bilateral interictal epileptiform discharges during monitoring than controls (P < 0.0002). Postictal psychosis most often develops in patients with bilateral dysfunction following a cluster of GTCS.

Observations on the behavior of a frog leucocyte in vivo have led to the conclusion that an adhesive force of at least 10(-5) dynes may be offered by one pseudopod. This adhesive force, of one pseudopod, is of the order of magnitude sufficient to cause leucocyte arrest previous to emigration through the capillary wall.

The effect of human and rabbit sera on the cataphoretic mobility of glass and quartz particles, and of paraffin oil droplets, was studied in serum dilutions (with 0.85 per cent NaCl) from 1:50 to 1:1,000,000, over a pH range of 3.6 to 9.3. 2. Under the conditions described, these various types of particles adsorbed protein partially or completely from the most dilute solution giving these particles electrokinetic properties characteristic of certain proteins, probably here those of serum albumin. 3. Quartz particles and paraffin oil droplets both have an isoelectric point between 4.7 and 4.8 in a 1:50 serum dilution. 4. The biological importance of these findings is discussed. 5. The ratio of electroosmotic to electrophoretic mobility of certain protein-coated surfaces is very close to 1.0, even in very dilute solutions of electrolytes.

This historical overview of the half-century of AIAA SDM Conferences testifies to their vitality as the principal showcase for advances in structural and dynamics analyses and the application of novel materials in the design and operation of aerospace vehicles. A brief history of the first 25 years of these conferences is given, with a reprise of the content of the 25 Conference. The latter part of the paper presents some limited views on selected topics that have been of importance in the past one or two decades, leading up to the 50 Conference.

Bedrock sculpturing of semilithified St. George Formation sandy mudstone exposed on a wave-cut platform has produced a variety of erosional forms that include surface scratches made by beach debris, ripple-like ridges that reflect differential erosion of bedrock, potholes, and scallop-shaped pockets and grooves, which may be straight or sinuous. Straight grooves form by preferential incision of regional joints. Sinuous grooves are not fracture controlled, are oriented parallel to wave run-up (orthogonal to the coast), and exist as closely spaced subparallel, nonconnecting, internally drained grooves that are best developed on higher platform ramparts and benches. Sinuous grooves have a mean length of 258 cm, mean maximum width of 14 cm, and mean width/length ratio of 0.08. They are not as deeply incised as straight grooves, do not serve as conduits for low-tide runoff during winter months, and typically terminate by shallowing and narrowing in both seaward and landward directions. Sinuous appearance results from trains of linked comma-shaped depressions, commonly with the blunt, highly curved end of each being most deeply incised and oriented seaward. Corrasion of bedrock highs and/or cavitation associated with turbulent vortices during tsunami run-up likely contributed to the genesis and/or enlargement of the sinuous grooves. Auguring and coring in a back barrier bog and diatom analysis reveals a landward-thinning, approximately 17 cm-thick, laterally continuous, clean, tsunami-emplaced sand layer with a sharp basal contact up to 125 m inland of the modern high-tide line. While seasonal cycles of beach aggradation and degradation combined with sediment transport and bedrock erosion accompanying low-tide runoff and high-tide wave motion undoubtedly accounts for form modification of sinuous grooves, it is unlikely to account for their origin.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Recent work using computerised perimetry has documented predictable visual field defects in patients with choroidal melanoma. Despite the higher frequency of occurrence of choroidal metastases, relatively little is known about their exact effects on visual performance, specifically with respect to visual field. This study is a pilot retrospective analysis of the results of automated perimetry testing in patients with choroidal metastatic disease. METHODS: The Humphrey field analyser was used to perform visual field tests on 15 eyes in 11 patients diagnosed with choroidal metastases. All 11 primary tumours were carcinomas originating in the breast (seven), lung (one), kidney (one), stomach (one), and prostate (one). All patients had either central 30 and/or peripheral 30-60 threshold strategies. RESULTS: Each of the 15 eyes tested had a demonstrable visual field defect. Eight eyes (53%) had absolute scotomas and seven (43%) had relative scotomas; the defects did not consistently correspond in size or location to the tumour as depicted by ophthalmoscopy or ultrasonography. This is in contradistinction to automated perimetry results in patients with choroidal melanoma. Three of the four eyes (75%) which were retested after treatment of the metastases showed improvement of the visual field. Seven of nine eyes (77%) that initially had reduced visual acuity had improvement after treatment. This clinical improvement corresponded well to tumour shrinkage and resolution of subretinal fluid. CONCLUSION: These findings may be useful in the decision to initiate treatment for symptomatic choroidal metastatic disease and in explaining to patients and their referring physicians what improvement could be expected from such treatment. A prospective evaluation of patients with choroidal metastases seems appropriate based on this pilot experience and may elucidate if the differences noted between visual field performance of these patients and those with choroidal melanoma may be useful in some diagnostically difficult cases.

We identified seven patients with refractory partial epilepsy and sleep apnea. Treatment of the sleep apnea with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), protriptyline, trazodone, acetazolamide, or tracheostomy reduced seizure frequency and severity in six patients. Success with CPAP depended largely on compliance. Four of five patients had a clear reduction in seizure frequency with the use of CPAP. Sleep apnea may exacerbate epilepsy by causing sleep disruption and deprivation, hypoxemia, and decreased cerebral blood flow. In epilepsy patients with risk factors (eg, obesity) or markers (eg, habitual snoring, daytime somnolence) for sleep apnea, a careful sleep history should be elicited and a polysomnogram obtained when indicated. Treatment of the sleep disorder can improve seizure control.

A syntax directed translator, developed by extending Strachey's GPM, is described. The semantic input to the translator consists of strings which are attached to vertices of derivation trees of sentences of context-free languages. These strings may contain macro calls which control the translator and its output. The translator may be used for compilation and for some symbol manipulation problems. Some practical as well as theoretical possibilities of this approach are discussed.

Some bottom-up syntax-directed parsing processors use a rectangular Boolean matrix called an applicability matrix to determine which rules might be used in the syntax analysis of an input string of terminal (basic) characters of a given language. By constructing a graph derived from the rules of a language specified in Backus Normal Form, and imposing a partial order on the vertices of this graph, it is shown in this paper that the applicability matrix may be partitioned into 2 submatrices, one of which is rectangular, and the other uppertriangular.

Some experimental data, primarily on total force response, are presented for nonlinear lateral sloshing in rigid tanks of various geometries. Some effect of excitation amplitude on liquid swirl boundaries in an open circular cylindrical tank is noted. Data for the circular cylindrical tank are also compared with theoretical predictions. The primary nonlinear effects observed in all tanks were decreasing response frequency with increasing excitation amplitude and jump phenomena.

This paper is a continuation of our experiments with LSD-25 and similar compounds that have been carried out for the last thirteen years.1 It employs the same technique described previously2 to compare these drugs on non-psychotic test subjects under suitable conditions. The conditions of the experiment are most important because under certain circumstances the experimental milieu produces so much anxiety that the environment may be said to affect the results as much as the drug itself. Of particular importance is the growing use of methysergide (Sansert) in the treatment of migraine. The frequent occurrence of side affects due to Sansert and the apparent development of tolerance to this derivative of d-lysergic acid has led us to explore the effects of methysergide (Sansert) in the same test subjects used in the study of psychotomimetic drugs for the past ten years. Similitude theory is applied to the problem of fuel sloshing in accelerated tanks to establish criteria for the design of model experiments. It is found that dynamic modeling is possible even if liquid viscosity is considered, and the ranges of significant parameters and the selection of model liquids are discussed. The results of experiments made on small models are compared with those obtained on full-scale tanks, for two different types of damping devices. (Author)

Measured span wise distributions of steady state and oscillatory lift and moment on fully submerged cantilever hydrofoils are presented. The hydrofoils were of aspect ratio 5 rectangular platform, and were towed at speeds sufficiently low to avoid cavitation. The data are compared with theoretical predictions and wind-tunnel data previously obtained at higher values of reduced velocity.

This paper presents a theoretical solution for transient heat conduction in a rod of finite length with variable thermal properties. A numerical procedure is developed and the results of one example are presented and compared with the corresponding solution for the case of constant properties. Application to the problem of determination of thermophysical properties is discussed briefly.

Given a context-free grammarG with a cycle of productionsA1 →A2α1,A2 →A3α2, ...,Am →A1αm, it is shown that there is a grammarG1 in which the only left-recursive rules are of the formA1 →A1α, andL(G1)=L(G). Using this normalization it is then shown that a Boolean matrix used in the analysis phase of some syntax-directed translation schemes may be partitioned into rectangular and upper-triangular submatrices.

The exact equations of elasticity are employed in an investigation of the flexural vibrations of a solid circular cylinder. Contrary to previous work, it is shown that the phase‐velocity‐wavelength relation has an infinity of branches, thus overcoming objections, on physical grounds, which have been made to the earlier work. The three lowest branches of this dispersion relation are calculated, and these are used to study the rate of energy transmission in terms of group velocity.

Experimental results for flexural wave propagation in elastic beams of circular cross sections resulting from very sharp impacts are presented. It is noted that a well-defined wave system precedes the main pulse. The experimental results are correlated with theoretical predictions from both the Pochhammer-Chree and Timoshenko theories.

A critical review and evaluation of existing hydrodynamic theories of body-water impact is presented. It is shown, partly by comparison with available experimental data, that current fitting methods are adequate only for bodies of reasonably large deadrise angle, particularly during the later stages of the impact process. An improved ellipse-fitting technique is presented that extends to a much broader class of body forms and derives more accurate formulations of the general problem. The refined technique avoids linearization of the free surface boundary condition and accounts for compressibility effects during the initial stage of impact. It is concluded that similar refined methods of predicting slamming pressures are necessary not only for critical ship design problems but also for the assessment of approximate theories used in studies of slamming characteristics of various ship forms.

An experimental investigation was conducted with scale models to determine the fuel motion and impact pressures on the fuel tank bulkheads of a missile which result from a sudden change in acceleration from forward to aft. From considerations of dimensional analysis, dynamically similar models were fabricated and tested to simulate a 6-ft diameter, 12-ft long prototype tank. A specially designed, gas operated, test apparatus drove the models through a stroke of about two feet at accelerations ranging from 10 to 50 g which corresponded to prototype decelerations of 0.12 to 0.60 g. High-speed motion pictures of transparent models with both spherical and conical heads, half and quarter full of opaque liquid, were taken corresponding to various accelerations and angles of inclination, and in addition, impact pressures on the heads were measured with flush-mounted pressure cells. The measurements indicate that peak impact pressures are approximately proportional to acceleration, and are greater for inclined rather than vertical motion; the pressures are, however, relatively independent of angle of inclination to the vertical, above a fairly small angle. Pressures are considerably higher on conical than on spherical heads, and are appreciably reduced by tank ring stiffeners.

The search for a method of specific inoculation against acute poliomyelitis is not a new one. Shortly after the announcement by Landsteiner and Popper (1), in 1909, of the successful transmission of this disease to members of the monkey family, workers in this country and Europe began to study the immunity problems of this disease. Flexner and Lewis (2), in 1910, demonstrated that monkeys could be immunized against poliomyelitis by repeated subcutaneous injections with increasing amounts of a saline suspension of the crude unmodified virus. They injected animals over a period of two and one-half months. About ten days after the completion of the course of inoculations, the animals were injected intracerebrally with 2 cc. of a filtrate of a very potent virus, of which 0.05 to 0.1 cc. would prove fatal. The animal tested presented no sign of infection, whereas the control died of poliomyelitis.

Expressions for the unsteady lift and moment acting on an oscillating hydrofoil submerged under a free surface are derived by an extension of classical unsteady thin-airfoil theory. The method of images is employed to account for the free surface, but the additional contribution resulting from surface waves, considered small, is neglected. The results of flutter computations are presented for a hypothetical example, using a simple representative station analysis, for ratios of depth of submergence to semi-chord of 2 and infinity; it is found that the lower flutter speed corresponds to infinite depth of submergence.
