Abundant porphyritic granites, including Grt-bearing and Bt-bearing porphyritic granites, and porphyritic potash-feldspar granite (trondhjemite-granitic composition) are widely distributed within the Kovela granitic complex Southern Finland, which associated with monazite-bearing dikes (strong trondhjemite composition). The investigated monazite-bearing dikes are dominated by a quartz + K-feldspar + plagioclase + biotite + garnet + monazite assemblage. The monazite forms complexly zoned subhedral to euhedral crystals variable in size (100 - 1500 μm in diameter) characterized by high Th content. The chemical zoning characterised as: 1) concentric, 2) patchy, and 3) intergrowth-like. Textural evidence suggests that these accessory minerals crystallized at an early magmatic stage, as they are commonly associated with clusters of the observed variations in their chemical composition are largely explained by the huttonite exchange , and subordinately by the cheralite exchange with proportions of huttonite (ThSiO4) and cheralite [CaTh(PO4)2] up to 20.4% and 9.8%, respectively. Textural evidence suggests that these monazites and associated Th-rich minerals (huttonite/thorite) crystallized at an early magmatic stage, rather than metamorphic origin. The total lanthanide and actinide contents in monazite and host dikes are strongly correlated. Mineral compositions applied to calculate P-T crystallization conditions using different approaches reveal a temperature range of 700°C - 820°C and pressure 3 - 6 kbars for the garnet-biotite geothermometry. P-T pseudo-section analyses calculated using THERMOCALC software for the bulk compositions of suitable rock types, constrain the PT conditions of garnet growth equilibration within the range of 5 - 6 kbars and 760°C - 770°C respectively. Empirical calculations and pseudo-section approaches indicate a clockwise P-T path for the rocks of the studied area. 207Pb/206Pb dating of monazite by LA-MC-ICPMS revealed a recrystallization period at around 1860 - 1840 Ma. These ages are related to the tectonic-thermal event associated with the intense crustal melting and intra-orogenic intrusions, constraining the youngest time limit for metamorphic processes in the Kovela granitic complex.

Volume: 17 Host publication title: EGU General Assembly 2015 The Vaasa migmatitic complex, or Vaasa dome, is cored by diatexite migmatites and S-type granitoids and gradually mantled by metatexite migmatites and mica schist with thin metabasite-andesite intercalations. Previous geochemical studies have demonstrated that the metasediments are the sources of the melted core: it have been suggested that the complex have been formed by in-situ melting of a basin. Field work studies highlight the formation of a gently dipping metamorphic fabric with a lateral increase of the in-situ melt content towards the core of the dome (D1). This early layered and partially melted fabric is then affected by a regional N-S shortening forming km- to outcrop-scale E-W striking folds and new sub-vertical foliation (D2). Late sub-vertical shearing is visible along the dome border and within the diatexitic zone (D3). No late detachment structures have been observed. In the metamorphic belt, the grade increases from medium-T amphibolite facies to low-P granulite facies towards the core of the dome. Pseudosections in the MnNCKFMASHTO system have been performed in one mica schist (Grt+BtPl+Qz±Std+Sill+And) and one metatexite migmatite (Bt+Liq+Crd+Pl+Kfs+Grt+Qz±Sill+And). The four papers summarized in this thesis deal with the Archean and earliest Paleoproterozoic granitoid suites observed in the Suomussalmi district, eastern Finland. Geologically, the area belongs to the Kianta Complex of the Western Karelian Terrane in the Karelian Province of the Fennoscandian shield. The inherited zircons up to 3440 Ma old together with Sm Nd and Pb Pb data confirm the existence of previously anticipated Paleoarchean protocrust in Suomussalmi. The general timeline of granitoid magmatism is similar to that of the surrounding areas. TTG magmatism occurred in three distinct phases: ca 2.95 Ga, 2.83 2.78 Ga and 2.76 2.74 Ga. In Suomussalmi the TTGs sensu stricto (K2O/Na2O less than 0.5) belong to the low-HREE type and are interpreted as partial melts of garnet amphibolites, which did not significantly interact with mantle peridotites. Transitional TTGs (K2O/Na2O more than 0.5), present in Suomussalmi and absent from surrounding areas, display higher LILE concentrations, but otherwise closely resemble the TTGs sensu stricto and indicate that recycling of felsic crust commenced in Suomussalmi 200 Ma earlier than in surrounding areas. The youngest TTG phase was coeval with the intrusion of the Likamännikkö quartz alkali feldspar syenite (2741 ± 2 Ma) complex. The complex contains angular fragments of ultrabasic rock, which display considerable compositional heterogeneity and are interpreted as cumulates containing clinopyroxene (generally altered to actinolite), apatite, allanite, epidote, and albite. The quartz alkali feldspar syenite cannot be regarded as alkaline sensu stricto, despite clear alkaline affinities. Within Likamännikkö there are also calcite carbonatite patches, which display mantle-like O- and C-isotope values, as well as trace element characteristics consistent with a magmatic origin, and could thus be among the oldest known carbonatites in the world. Sanukitoid (2.73 2.71 Ga) and quartz diorite suites (2.70 Ga) overlap within error margins and display compositional similarities, but can be differentiated from each other on the basis of higher Ba, K2O and LREE contents of the sanukitoids. The Likamännikkö complex, sanukitoids and quartz diorites are interpreted as originating from the metasomatized mantle and mark the diversification of the granitoid clan after 200 Ma of evolution dominated by the TTG suite. Widespread migmatization and the intrusion of anatectic leucogranitoids as dykes and intrusions of varying size took place at 2.70 2.69 Ga, following collisional thickening of the crust. The leucogranitoids and leucosomes of migmatized TTGs are compositionally alike and characterized by high silica contents and a leucocratic appearance. Due to compositional overlap, definitive discrimination between leucogranitoids and transitional TTGs requires isotope datings and/or knowledge of field relationships. Leucogranitoids represent partial melts of the local TTGs, both the sensu stricto and transitional types, mostly derived under water fluxed conditions, with possible fluid sources being late sanukitoids and quartz diorites as well as dehydrating lower crust. The Paleoproterozoic 2.44 2.39 Ga A-type granitoids of the Kianta Complex emplaced in an extensional environment are linked to the coeval and more widespread mafic intrusions and dykes observed over most of the Archean nucleus of the Fennoscandian shield. The A-type intrusions in the Suomussalmi area are interpreted as partial melts of the Archean lower crust and display differences in composition and magnetite content, which indicate differences in the composition and oxidation state of the source. Se koostuu pääasiassa granitoideista eli graniitin kaltaisista kivilajeista ja on suurimmaksi osaksi muodostunut arkeeisella ajalla yli 2500 miljoonaa vuotta sitten. Viimeaikoina arkeeisen tutkimuksen polttopisteessä on ollut kysymys siitä kuinka paljon, jos ollenkaan, silloinen laattatektoniikka muistutti nykyisin havaittavaa systeemiä. Tätä kysymystä voidaan arvioida tutkimalla granitoidien kemiallisia- ja isotooppikoostumuksesta saatavien vihjeiden avulla. Tutkimuksen tulokset vahvistavat aiemmat viitteet siitä että alueen geologinen historia ulottuu yli 3000 miljoonan vuoden taakse. Tämä voidaan osoittaa muun muassa yksittäisten zirkoni-mineraalikiteiden uraani-lyijy isotooppisuhteiden avulla. Vanhimmat kivet alueella ovat noin 2950 miljoonaa vuotta vanhoja, pääosan ollessa 2800 2700 miljoonaa vuotta vanhoja. Noin 2700 miljoonaa vuotta sitten mannerkuori alueella paksuuntui pienempien mannerlaattojen törmätessä toisiinsa, tähän paksuuntumiseen liittyvän lämpenemisen seurauksena vanhemmat kivilajit osittain sulivat ja syntyi alueelle tyypilliset migmatiitit eli seoskivet. Törmäysvaihetta seurasi pitkä rauhallinen jakso, joka päättyi 2440 miljoonaa vuotta sitten koostumukseltaan Etelä-Suomen suuria rapakivimassiiveja muistuttavien graniittien tunkeutuessa vanhaan mannerkuoreen, sen repeämisen alkuvaiheissa. Tutkimuksien yhteydessä löydettiin Suomussalmen Likamänniköstä 2740 miljoonaa vuotta vanha kvartsi-alkalimääsälpäsyeniitti, joka edustaa aiemmin arkeeiselta ajalta tuntematonta kivilajityyppiä maassamme. Vastaavan koostumuksisia ja ikäisiä intruusioita tunnetaan maailmaltakin vain muutamia, lähinnä Pohjois-Norjasta, Grönlannista ja Kanadasta Alueen granitoidien kemiallisissa- ja isotooppikoostumuksissa ei ole havaittavissa viitteitä nykyisen kaltaisesta laattatektoniikasta, jossa merellinen kuori painuu mantereisen alle, ennen kuin noin 2750 miljoonaa vuotta sitten. Tämän jälkeen alueen granitoidien koostumukset muuttuvat ja samalla monipuolistuvat, osoittaen vallinneen laattatektoniikan luonteen muuttuneen enemmän nykyistä muistuttavaksi. Paitsi puhtaan tieteellisesti mielenkiintoisia, tutkimuksen tuloksena saavutettu parempi kokonaiskuva kallioperän kehityksestä auttaa myös alueella tapahtuvaa malminetsintää.

This thesis summarises the results of four original papers concerning U-Pb geochronology and geochemical evolution of Archaean rocks from the Kuhmo terrain and the Nurmes belt, eastern Finland. The study area belongs to a typical Archaean granite-greenstone terrain, composed of metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks in generally N-S trending greenstone belts as well as a granitoid-gneiss complex with intervening gneissic and migmatised supracrustal and plutonic rocks. U-Pb data on migmatite mesosomes indicate that the crust surrounding the Tipasjärvi-Kuhmo-Suomussalmi greenstone belt is of varying age. The oldest protolith detected for a migmatite mesosome from the granitoid-gneiss complex is 2.94 Ga, whereas the other dated migmatites protoliths have ages of 2.84 2.79 Ga. The latter protoliths are syngenetic with the majority of volcanic rocks in the adjacent Tipasjärvi-Kuhmo-Suomussalmi greenstone belt. This suggests that the genesis of some of the volcanic rocks within the greenstone belt and surrounding migmatite protoliths could be linked. Metamorphic zircon overgrowths with ages of 2.84 2.81 Ga were also obtained. The non-migmatised plutonic rocks in the Kuhmo terrain and in the Nurmes belt record secular geochemical evolution, typical of Archaean cratons. The studied tonalitic rocks have ages of 2.83 2.75 Ga and they have geochemical characteristics similar to low-Al and high-Al TTD (tonalite-trondhjemite-dacite). The granodiorites, diorites, and gabbros with high Mg/Fe and LILE-enriched characteristics were mostly emplaced between 2.74 2.70 Ga and they exhibit geochemical characteristics typical of Archaean sanukitoid suites. The latest identified plutonic episode took place at 2.70 2.68 Ga, when compositionally heterogeneous leucocratic granitoid rocks, with a variable crustal component, were emplaced. U-Pb data on migmatite leucosomes suggest that leucosome generation may have been coeval with this latest plutonic event. On the basis of available U-Pb and Sm-Nd isotopic data it appears that the plutonic rocks of the Kuhmo terrain and the Nurmes belt do not contain any significant input from Palaeoarchaean sources. A characteristic feature of the Nurmes belt is the presence of migmatised paragneisses, locally preserving primary edimentary structures, with sporadic amphibolite intercalations. U-Pb studies on zircons indicate that the precursors of the Nurmes paragneisses were graywackes that were deposited between 2.71 Ga and 2.69 Ga and that they had a prominent 2.75 2.70 Ga source. Nd isotopic and whole-rock geochemical data for the intercalated amphibolites imply MORB sources. U-Pb data on zircons from the plutonic rocks and paragneisses reveal that metamorphic zircon growth took place at 2.72 2.63 Ga. This was the last tectonothermal event related to cratonisation of the Archaean crust of eastern Finland. Tässä väitöskirjatyössä on tutkittu Kuhmon alueen ja Nurmeksen vyöhykkeen arkeeisten granitoidien, migmatiittien ja gneissien ikää sekä alkuperää geokemiallisin ja isotooppigeokemiallisin menetelmin. Iänmääritykseen käytettiin U-Pb -isotooppeihin pohjautuvaa sekundääri-ionimassaspektrometriaa yksittäisten zirkonikiteiden osista sekä perinteistä termiseen ionisaatioon perustuvaa U-Pb -isotooppianalytiikkaa zirkoni- ja titaniittiraepopulaatioille. Kivilajien karakterisoinnissa käytetiin lisäksi kokokivigeokemiaa sekä Sm-Nd -isotooppianalytikkaa. U-Pb -isotooppianalytiikka paljasti, että osa zirkonikiteistä, jotka ajoitettiin migmatiitin mesosomista Kuhmon vihreäkivivyöhykkeen itäpuolelta, ovat 2.94 miljardia vuotta vanhoja. Kiteiden tulkittiin edustavan kiven magmaattista ikää. Kolmen muun alueelta otetun migmatiittinäytteen mesosomien zirkoneista saatiin pääosin 2.79 - 2.84 miljardia vuotta vanhoja ikiä. Jälkimmäiset iät vastaavat erästä vulkaanista vaihetta viereiseltä Tipasjärvi-Kuhmo-Suomussalmi -vihreäkivivyöhykkeeltä. Tämän seurauksena on mahdollista, että joillakin vihreäkivivyöhykkeen kivillä ja sitä ympäröivillä kivillä on geneettinen yhteys. Tutkimusalueen kivistä saadut uudet U-Pb -iänmääritykset yhdessä aiempien iänmääritysten ja uuden geokemiallisen datan kanssa vahvistivat käsitystä, että syväkivien geokemiallinen kehitys on sidoksissa ikään. Vanhimmat tunnetut tutkimusalueen ei-migmatiittiset kivet ovat tonaliitteja, joiden ikä vaihtelee 2.83 - 2.75 miljardin vuoden välillä. Noin 2.74 miljardia vuotta vanhoissa ja osassa sen jälkeen syntyneissä syväkivissä havaitaan arkeeisille sanukitoidi-sarjan kiville tyypillinen geokemiallinen luonne. Myöhäisimmät tunnetut arkeeiset syväkivet ovat pääosin leukokraattisia graniitteja ja granodioriitteja. Niiden syntymisen päävaihe on ajoitettu 2.70 ja 2.68 miljardin vuoden välille. Migmatiittien leukosomeista havaittiin myös samanikäisiä zirkonikiteitä. Sm-Nd -isotooppien perusteella tutkimusalueen tonaliitit ovat verrattain juveniilia materiaalia, kun taas valtaosa myöhäisistä leukokraattisista granodioriiteista ja -graniiteista vaikuttaisi olevan peräisin pääosin aiemmin syntyneestä maankuoresta. Nurmeksen vyöhykkeelle ominainen piirre on sedimentäärisperäisten gneissien, eli paragneissien yleisyys. U-Pb -isotooppianalytiikan perusteella paragneissien lähtökivilaji on pääosin peräisin noin 2.70 - 2.75 miljardia vuotta vanhasta materiaalista. Ottaen huomioon analyyttiset virherajat, sedimenttikiven kerrostuminen on tapahtunut noin 2.69 ja 2.71 miljardia vuotta sitten. Myöhäisin tunnettu tektonoterminen vaihe alueen arkeeisen kuoren kehityksessä on kivien metamorfoosi, joka tutkimusalueelta analysoitujen näytteiden perusteella on 2.72 - 2.63 miljardia vuotta vanhaa.
