Transplant patients, including solid-organ transplant (SOT) and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients, are exposed to various types of complications, particularly rejection. To prevent these outcomes, transplant recipients commonly receive long-term immunosuppressive regimens that in turn make them more susceptible to a wide array of infectious diseases, notably those caused by opportunistic pathogens. Among these, invasive fungal infections (IFIs) remain a major cause of mortality and morbidity in both SOT and HSCT recipients. Despite the continuing improvement in early diagnostics and treatments of IFIs, the management of these infections in transplant patients is still complicated. Here, we provide an overview concerning the most recent trends in the epidemiology of IFIs in SOT and HSCT recipients by describing the prominent yeast and mold species involved, the timing of post-transplant IFIs and the risk factors associated with their occurrence in these particularly weak populations. We also give special emphasis into basic research advances in the field that recently suggested a role of the global and long-term prophylactic regimen in orchestrating various biological disturbances in the organism and conditioning the emergence of the most adapted fungal strains to the particular physiological profiles of transplant patients.

This article analyses the influence of environmental inequalities on people’s preferences for Nature-based Solutions aiming at reducing flooding risks. The approach is based on the spatial analysis of three forms of environmental inequalities (access, exposure and distributional inequalities), and their influence on the preference profiles of 399 residents of the Lez catchment. The results show that preferences are spatially heterogeneous and influenced by these inequalities observed along an urban-rural gradient. We recommend analysing these environmental inequalities when designing Nature-based Solutions to improve their consideration in public policies.

ABSTRACT Fungal infections represent a major problem in human health. This is particularly the case of infections caused by the filamentous fungus Aspergillus fumigatus, affecting millions of people worldwide. While active germination of conidia is documented to be essential for the A. fumigatus pathogenicity in the context of chronic infections, the molecular mechanisms underlying this morphogenetic transition remain unclear. In a new report, Kirkland and colleagues shed light on a central role of a major stress-sensing pathway in orchestrating the germination process in A. fumigatus. This work provides insight into disruption of an essential cell signaling circuitry for an adequate and long-term adaptation of the fungus to the lung microenvironment.

Economic narratives are largely put forward as an argument for the promotion of Nature Based Solutions (NBS). However, integrated economic evidence, taking into account direct and opportunity costs, avoided damages and the multiplicity of co-benefits generated by NBS are still needed to support this argument and convince decision makers to invest in these solutions. To address this gap, we develop a methodological framework for the economic assessment of NBS for water related risks and present its application to three European case studies. We find that the cost of implementation and maintenance is lower for NBS strategies than for grey solutions for the same level of risk reduction, thereby confirming the cost-effectiveness advantage of these solutions. Benefits in terms of avoided damages are however generally not sufficient to cover these costs. Co-benefits represent the major share of the monetary value generated by NBS strategies. Finally, the results of the cost-benefit analysis reveal context-specific results on the overall economic efficiency of NBS. These results urge decision makers to tailor funding strategies to the specificity of NBS economic value.

The Tangérois region is into full socio-economic evolution with the development of free zones and the establishment of a new population. The requirements of water and agricultural produce increase. The urbanization and industrialization cause the land to change use and function. These changes would affect the hydrological behavior of Tleta watershed (17 700 ha), which feeds Ibn Batouta dam; a significant source of water for the Tangérois. The assumption sit for is that these landscape changes affect the production of water, soil erosion and the productivity of land. It is the principal purpose of the ALMIRA research project, within which this study is being implemented. It aims at contributing to check this assumption by analyzing agrarian and landscape dynamics in Tleta. The diagnosis of the Tleta watershed allowed the agroecological zoning of land and the description of the agricultural farming systems (56 surveyed farms). Eight quadrats (of 1,75 km² on average) were selected to analyze the dynamics of land use and parcellar between 2000 and 2015 starting from the exploitation of land use maps produced on different dates and Google images of quadrats selected for 2003, 2009 and 2015. For each quadrat, the parcellar was digitalized. The study confirmed the intense evolution of spaces in Tleta. The significant factors of change are the economic development, the establishment of the new city of Chrafate, the contributions of external capital, the exodus of young people, the development of tree crops (Morocco Green Plan) and the valorization of matorral. The analysis of quadrats showed that the share of parcels with built environment varies from 0 to 30%; those with hedge from 0 to 90%; the median size of the parcels is lower than 0.5 ha but varies from some m² to 2 ha; the share of matorral varies between 2 and 57%. The dominating farming system is the mixed-farming-livestock. The average size is 7.7 ha, distributed on six parcels. 50% of the farms have a size from 5 to 10 ha. They produce cereals (wheat, barley, oats), sorghum and leguminous plants (beans, lentils, chickpea), intended for auto consumption and livestock. Dominant crop rotation is cereal/fallow, used as pasture for livestock. The olive-tree plantation is recently developed. The average animal herd is composed of four cattle, three sheep and three goats. This study posed the bases of a prospective analysis of the watershed: How these evolutions will combine by 2040? What would be the impacts on agricultural economics, erosion and the supply of water for the dam?

En France, le bon état des ressources en eau souterraine est un enjeu majeur pour l’alimentation en eau potable des territoires. Pour préserver ou reconquérir la qualité de cette ressource précieuse mais peu visible, les gestionnaires doivent définir et mettre en œuvre dès aujourd'hui des actions de protection qui vont générer des coûts immédiats pour des bénéfices futurs difficiles à évaluer, souvent incertains et peu perceptibles pour les acteurs des territoires concernés. À travers l’analyse économique comparée de plusieurs stratégies d'action, cet article propose un éclairage sur les implications économiques des choix de protection des eaux souterraines pour l’alimentation en eau potable.

Le Tangérois est en plein évolution socioéconomique avec le développement des zones franches et l’installation d’une nouvelle population. Les besoins en eau et en produits agricoles augmentent. L’urbanisation et l’industrialisation font que la terre change d’utilisation et de fonction.Ces changements impacteraient le comportement hydrologique du bassin du Tleta (17 700 ha) qui alimente le barrage Ibn Batouta ; source importante d’eau pour le Tangérois. L’hypothèse posée est que ces changements paysagers impactent la production en eau, l’érosion des sols et la productivité des terres. C’est la finalité principale du projet de recherche ALMIRA dans lequel s’insère cette étude. Elle vise à contribuer à la vérification de cette hypothèse en analysant la dynamique agraire et paysagère dans le Tleta. Le diagnostic du bassin Tleta a permis un zonage agroécologique des terres et une description des systèmes d’exploitation agricole (56 exploitations enquêté). Huit quadrats de 1,75 km² en moyenne ont été choisis pour analyser la dynamique des occupations des terres et des parcellaires entre 2000 et 2015 à partir de l’exploitation de cartes des occupations produites à différentes dates et d’images Google de 2003, 2009 et 2015. Pour chaque quadra, le parcellaire a été digitalisé. L’étude a confirmé l’intense évolution des espaces dans le Tleta. Les facteurs de changement importants sont le développement économique, l’implantation de la ville nouvelle de Chrafate, l’apport de capitaux extérieurs, l’exode des jeunes, le développement de l’arboriculture (Plan Maroc Vert) et la valorisation du matorral. L’analyse des quadrats a montré que la part des parcelles avec bâti varie de 0 à 30% ; celles avec haie de 0 à 90%; la taille médiane des parcelles est inférieure à 0,5 ha mais varie de quelques m² à 2 ha ; la part du matorral varie entre 2 et 57%. Le système d’exploitation dominant est la polyculture-polyélevage. La taille moyenne d’une exploitation est de 7,7ha répartie sur 6 parcelles. 50% des exploitations ont une taille de 5 à 10 ha. Elles produisent des céréales (blé, orge, avoine), du sorgho et des légumineuses (fève, lentilles, pois chiche), destinées à l’autoconsommation et à l’élevage. La rotation dominante est culture (céréales)/jachère qui sert de pâture au cheptel. La plantation de l’olivier est récemment développée. Le troupeau moyen est composé de 4 bovins, 3 ovins et 3 caprins. Cette étude a posé les bases d’une analyse prospective du bassin : comment ces évolutions vont-elles se combiner à l’horizon 2040 ? La directive cadre sur l’eau nécessite la mise en place des programmes d’actions pour restaurer le bon état des masses d’eau souterraines d’ici 2027 au plus tard, et ce au moindre coût. Face aux difficultés rencontrées pour sélectionner des actions de restauration efficaces, cet article apporte un éclairage méthodologique innovant sur la conduite d'une évaluation économique pour définir un programme d'actions visant à améliorer la qualité d'une masse d'eau souterraine dégradée par les nitrates d'origine agricole.

Il est aujourd'hui reconnu que les activités anthropiques sont une cause déterminante de l'érosion de la biodiversité. Dans ce contexte, l'homme tente d'allier les intérêts environnementaux et politiques grâce à des lois qui encadrent le développement et à travers des instruments comme les études d'impact. Notre étude a pour objectif de mesurer la prise en compte de la biodiversité à travers les études d'impact et de regarder comment elle évolue face aux évolutions des politiques publiques. L'analyse systématique de 42 études d'impact témoigne d'une amélioration de la prise en compte de la biodiversité dans les études d'impact au cours du temps avec, entre autre, un net effet des nouvelles règlementations. Cependant, cette amélioration reste à nuancer à différents niveaux : analyse des solutions alternatives, impacts cumulés, espèces ordinaires, fonctionnalités écologiques, suivi-évaluation, etc. Nous mettons ensuite nos résultats en perspective avec les apports de la loi d'août 2016. Enfin, nous concluons sur la nécessité d'un changement d'échelle, vers une démarche proactive et anticipatrice des impacts de l'aménagement du territoire bien en amont de l'échelle des projets, dès l'échelle de la planification, afin de se rapprocher du No Net Loss.

ABSTRACT Histidine kinases (HKs) are among the most prominent sensing proteins studied in the kingdom Fungi. Their distribution and biological functions in early diverging fungi (EDF), however, remain elusive. We have taken advantage of recent genomic resources to elucidate whether relationships between the occurrence of specific HKs in some EDF and their respective habitat/lifestyle could be established. This led to the unexpected discovery of fungal HKs that share a high degree of similarity with receptors for plant hormones (ethylene and cytokinin). Importantly, these phytohormone receptor homologs are found not only in EDF that behave as plant root symbionts or endophytes but also in EDF species that colonize decaying plant material. We hypothesize that these particular sensing proteins promoted the interaction of EDF with plants, leading to the conquest of land by these ancestral fungi.

Plus de 40 % des masses d'eau souterraines sont concernées par la pollution diffuse d'origine agricole en France. La directive cadre sur l'eau demande de mettre en place des programmes d'actions permettant de restaurer le bon état des masses d'eau d'ici 2027 au plus tard, et ce au moindre coût. Cependant, la sélection et le dimensionnement d'actions de restauration coûts-efficace rencontrent plusieurs difficultés d'ordre méthodologique. Cet article propose un nouvel éclairage sur la conduite d'une analyse coût-efficacité qui articule les résultats de méthodes participatives et de modèles, par le couplage d'approches économiques, agronomiques et hydrogéologiques. La démarche, appliquée à la masse d'eau des alluvions de la plaine de l'Ain, préconise la mise en place d'une diversification des assolements sur la partie sud-est de la masse d'eau. Les résultats mettent également en évidence les incertitudes relatives à l'évolution de la qualité des eaux souterraines, ainsi que le caractère trop peu incitatif des dispositifs actuels de type mesures agro-environnementales pour restaurer le bon état à l'échelle de la masse d'eau d'ici 2027.

Rationale: Recent studies have revealed that the lung microbiota of critically ill patients is altered and predicts clinical outcomes. The incidence of invasive fungal infections, namely, invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), in immunocompromised patients is increasing, but the clinical significance of variations in lung bacterial communities is unknown.Objectives: To define the contribution of the lung microbiota to the development and course of IPA.Methods and Measurements: We performed an observational cohort study to characterise the lung microbiota in 104 immunocompromised patients using bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing on bronchoalveolar lavage samples sampled on clinical suspicion of infection. Associations between lung dysbiosis in IPA and pulmonary immunity were evaluated by quantifying alveolar cytokines and chemokines and immune cells. The contribution of microbial signatures to patient outcome was assessed by estimating overall survival.Main Results: Patients diagnosed with IPA displayed a decreased alpha diversity, driven by a markedly increased abundance of the Staphylococcus, Escherichia, Paraclostridium and Finegoldia genera and a decreased proportion of the Prevotella and Veillonella genera. The overall composition of the lung microbiome was influenced by the neutrophil counts and associated with differential levels of alveolar cytokines. Importantly, the degree of bacterial diversity at the onset of IPA predicted the survival of infected patients.Conclusions: Our results reveal the lung microbiota as an understudied source of clinical variation in patients at risk of IPA and highlight its potential as a diagnostic and therapeutic target in the context of respiratory fungal diseases.
