The prevalence of Internet of Things (IoT) systems deployment is increasing across various domains, from residential to industrial settings. These systems are typically characterized by their modest computationa requirements and use of lightweight communication protocols, such as MQTT. However, the rising adoption of IoT technology has also led to the emergence of novel attacks, increasing the susceptibility of these systems to compromise. Among the different attacks that can affect the main IoT protocols are Denial of Service attacks (DoS). In this scenario, this paper evaluates the performance of six supervised classification techniques (Decision Trees, Multi-layer Perceptron, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Fisher Linear Discriminant and Bernoulli and Gaussian Naive Bayes) combined with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) feature extraction method for detecting DoS attacks in MQTT networks. For this purpose, a real dataset containing all the traffic generated in the network and many attacks executed has been used. The results obtained with several models have achieved performances above 99% AUC.

Growing dependence on fossil fuels is one of the critical factors accelerating climate change, a global concern that can destabilize ecosystems and economies worldwide. In this context, renewable energy is emerging as a sustainable and environmentally responsible alternative. Among the options, geothermal energy stands out for its ability to provide heat and electricity consistently and efficiently, offering a feasible solution to reduce the carbon footprint and promote more sustainable development in a globalized economy. In this work, a machine learning approach is proposed to predict the behavior of a horizontal heat exchanger from a bioclimatic house. First, a correlation analysis was conducted for optimal feature selection. Then, several regression techniques were applied to predict the output temperature of the geothermal exchanger. Satisfactory prediction results were obtained in different scenarios over the whole dataset. Also, a significant correlation between several sensors was concluded.

Systems engineering plays a key role in the naval sector, focusing on how to design, integrate, and manage complex systems throughout their life cycle; it is therefore difficult to conceive functional warships without it. To this end, specialized information systems for logistical support and the sustainability of material solutions are essential to ensure proper provisioning and to know the operational status of the frigate. However, based on an architecture composed of a set of logistics applications, this information system may require highly qualified operators with a deep knowledge of the behavior of onboard systems to manage it properly. In this regard, failure detection systems have been postulated as one of the main cutting-edge methods to address the challenge, employing intelligent techniques for observing anomalies in the normal behavior of systems without the need for expert knowledge. In this paper, the study is concerned to the scope of the Spanish navy, where a complex information system structure is responsible for ensuring the correct maintenance and provisioning of the vessels. In such context, we hereby suggest a comparison between different one-class techniques, such as statistical models, geometric boundaries, or dimensional reduction to face anomaly detection in specific subsystems of a warship, with the prospect of applying it to the whole ship.

Present research proposes the application of unsupervised and supervised machine-learning techniques to characterize Android malware families. More precisely, a novel unsupervised neural-projection method for dimensionality-reduction, namely, Beta Hebbian Learning (BHL), is applied to visually analyze such malware. Additionally, well-known supervised Decision Trees (DTs) are also applied for the first time in order to improve characterization of such families and compare the original features that are identified as the most important ones. The proposed techniques are validated when facing real-life Android malware data by means of the well-known and publicly available Malgenome dataset. Obtained results support the proposed approach, confirming the validity of BHL and DTs to gain deep knowledge on Android malware.

Currently, there is great interest in reducing the consumption of fossil fuels (and other non-renewable energy sources) in order to preserve the environment; smart buildings are commonly proposed for this purpose as they are capable of producing their own energy and using it optimally. However, at times, solar energy is not able to supply the energy demand fully; it is mandatory to know the quantity of energy needed to optimize the system. This research focuses on the prediction of output temperature from a solar thermal collector. The aim is to measure solar thermal energy and optimize the energy system of a house (or building). The dataset used in this research has been taken from a real installation in a bio-climate house located on the Sotavento Experimental Wind Farm, in north-west Spain. A hybrid intelligent model has been developed by combining clustering and regression methods such as neural networks, polynomial regression, and support vector machines. The main findings show that, by dividing the dataset into small clusters on the basis of similarity in behavior, it is possible to create more accurate models. Moreover, combining different regression methods for each cluster provides better results than when a global model of the whole dataset is used. In temperature prediction, mean absolute error was lower than 4 ∘ C.

The present research work focuses on overcoming cybersecurity problems in the Smart Grid. Smart Grids must have feasible data capture and communications infrastructure to be able to manage the huge amounts of data coming from sensors. To ensure the proper operation of next-generation electricity grids, the captured data must be reliable and protected against vulnerabilities and possible attacks. The contribution of this paper to the state of the art lies in the identification of cyberattacks that produce anomalous behaviour in network management protocols. A novel neural projectionist technique (Beta Hebbian Learning, BHL) has been employed to get a general visual representation of the traffic of a network, making it possible to identify any abnormal behaviours and patterns, indicative of a cyberattack. This novel approach has been validated on 3 different datasets, demonstrating the ability of BHL to detect different types of attacks, more effectively than other state-of-the-art methods.

The hotel industry is an important energy consumer that needs efficient energy management methods to guarantee its performance and sustainability. The new role of hotels as prosumers increases the difficulty in the design of these methods. Also, the scenery is more complex as renewable energy systems are present in the hotel energy mix. The performance of energy management systems greatly depends on the use of reliable predictions for energy load. This paper presents a new methodology to predict energy load in a hotel based on intelligent techniques. The model proposed is based on a hybrid intelligent topology implemented with a combination of clustering techniques and intelligent regression methods (Artificial Neural Network and Support Vector Regression). The model includes its own energy demand information, occupancy rate, and temperature as inputs. The validation was done using real hotel data and compared with time-series models. Forecasts obtained were satisfactory, showing a promising potential for its use in energy management systems in hotel resorts.

La visión computacional desempeña un papel fundamental en el campo de la robótica móvil, dada la gran cantidad de información sobre el entorno que puede ser extraída de una imagen. El objetivo del trabajo desarrollado es conseguir un comportamiento autónomo de un robot comercial de bajo coste denominado Rovio, en la tarea de seguir un objeto móvil de forma autónoma. Para lograrlo, ha sido necesario desarrollar un conjunto de funciones, unas de manejo del robot y otras para llevar a cabo la comunicación y transferencia de datos con él. Se realizan pruebas para determinar la estabilidad de la propuesta implementada y para poder medir la precisión que se obtiene.
