Abstract

Gamma rays from HESS J1849−000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches 4.0 σ and 4.4 σ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of the Gaussian standard deviation σ . The energy spectrum measured between 40 TeV < E < 320 TeV for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${dN}/{dE}={(2.86\pm 1.44)\times {10}^{-16}(E/40\,\mathrm{TeV})}^{-2.24\pm 0.41}\,{\mathrm{TeV}}^{-1}\,{\mathrm{cm}}^{-2}\,{{\rm{s}}}^{-1}$ . The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ( E < 1 TeV) to sub-PeV (100 TeV < E < 1 PeV) ranges, including the results of previous studies, can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, i.e., inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849−0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray-emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons E _p,cut is estimated as ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}({E}_{{\rm{p}},\mathrm{cut}}/\mathrm{TeV})={3.73}_{-0.66}^{+2.98}$ , suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study thus proposes that HESS J1849−000 should be further investigated as a new candidate as a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, or “PeVatron.”

Abstract

Air–sea CO2 fluxes over the Pacific Ocean are known to be characterized by coherent large-scale structures that reflect not only ocean subduction and upwelling patterns, but also the combined effects of wind-driven gas exchange and biology. On the largest scales, a large net CO2 influx into the extratropics is associated with a robust seasonal cycle, and a large net CO2 efflux from the tropics is associated with substantial interannual variability. In this work, we have synthesized estimates of the net air–sea CO2 flux from a variety of products, drawing upon a variety of approaches in three sub-basins of the Pacific Ocean, i.e., the North Pacific extratropics (18–66° N), the tropical Pacific (18° S–18° N), and the South Pacific extratropics (44.5–18° S). These approaches include those based on the measurements of CO2 partial pressure in surface seawater (pCO2sw), inversions of ocean-interior CO2 data, forward ocean biogeochemistry models embedded in the ocean general circulation models (OBGCMs), a model with assimilation of pCO2sw data, and inversions of atmospheric CO2 measurements. Long-term means, interannual variations and mean seasonal variations of the regionally integrated fluxes were compared in each of the sub-basins over the last two decades, spanning the period from 1990 through 2009. A simple average of the long-term mean fluxes obtained with surface water pCO2 diagnostics and those obtained with ocean-interior CO2 inversions are −0.47 ± 0.13 Pg C yr−1 in the North Pacific extratropics, +0.44 ± 0.14 Pg C yr−1 in the tropical Pacific, and −0.37 ± 0.08 Pg C yr−1 in the South Pacific extratropics, where positive fluxes are into the atmosphere. This suggests that approximately half of the CO2 taken up over the North and South Pacific extratropics is released back to the atmosphere from the tropical Pacific. These estimates of the regional fluxes are also supported by the estimates from OBGCMs after adding the riverine CO2 flux, i.e., −0.49 ± 0.02 Pg C yr−1 in the North Pacific extratropics, +0.41 ± 0.05 Pg C yr−1 in the tropical Pacific, and −0.39 ± 0.11 Pg C yr−1 in the South Pacific extratropics. The estimates from the atmospheric CO2 inversions show large variations amongst different inversion systems, but their median fluxes are consistent with the estimates from climatological pCO2sw data and pCO2sw diagnostics. In the South Pacific extratropics, where CO2 variations in the surface and ocean interior are severely undersampled, the difference in the air–sea CO2 flux estimates between the diagnostic models and ocean-interior CO2 inversions is larger (0.18 Pg C yr−1). The range of estimates from forward OBGCMs is also large (−0.19 to −0.72 Pg C yr−1). Regarding interannual variability of air–sea CO2 fluxes, positive and negative anomalies are evident in the tropical Pacific during the cold and warm events of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation in the estimates from pCO2sw diagnostic models and from OBGCMs. They are consistent in phase with the Southern Oscillation Index, but the peak-to-peak amplitudes tend to be higher in OBGCMs (0.40 ± 0.09 Pg C yr−1) than in the diagnostic models (0.27 ± 0.07 Pg C yr−1).

Abstract

Background Increased arterial stiffness characterize by aging. It is reported that age-related increases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) may be one of contributing factor for arterial stiffness. Arterial reflected wave was composed of SNA and aging. Increased arterial reflected wave partly plays an important role in blood pressure. Recently, we reported that arterial velocity pulse index (AVI), a novel index of arterial reflected waves, was associated with MSNA in hypertensive patients. It is still uncertain the effect of age on the association between AVI and SNA in hypertensive patients. Method Patients with essential HT and matched non-hypertensive control subjects were included in this study. HT was diagnosed as systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥90 mmHg. AVI was measured from left upper arm by NAS-1000. SNA was evaluated by direct recording of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) from peroneal nerves. Results 45 HT patients and 46 control subjects were included. Age, SBP and DBP were significantly increased in HT group compared to control (Age 63±14 vs 42±16 years, p160 mmHg subjects in group 2, significant correlation was clarified between AVI and MSNA (r=0.62, p Conclusion The relationship between AVI and MSNA in HT patients is preserved regardless of aging, however, high blood pressure over 160mmHg might obscure its correlation. Abstract

Introduction Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) is the main cause of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). LVDD is related not only to arterial stiffness but also sympathetic nerve activity (SNA). Recent study demonstrated that increased muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) may be one of contributing factor for arterial stiffness. In clinical practice, Cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) provides a reproducible index of arterial stiffness, independent of blood pressure (BP). Recently, Arterial Velocity pulse Index (AVI), which is an index of arterial reflected waves, have been proposed as new index of arterial stiffness. We reported that AVI was associated with MSNA in hypertensive (HT) patients. However, it is still uncertain the effect of LVDD on the association between AVI and SNA in HT patients. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that AVI would be increased and related to MSNA in HT patients with LVDD. Methods Patients with essential HT subjects were included in this study. HT was diagnosed as systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥140mmHg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥90mmHg. Patients with secondary HT was excluded. AVI was measured from left upper arm by NAS-1000 (Nihon Koden, Japan). CAVI was measured by VaSera VS-1500A (Fukuda Denshi, Japan). Transthoracic echocardiography was performed by trained sonographers. SNA was evaluated by direct recording of MSNA from peroneal nerves. Results 25 HT patients were included (age 63±14 years, Male/Female 9/16). They were divided into two groups according to E/e' (no LVDD group, E/e' ≤9, N=12; LVDD group, E/e' >9, N=13). There were no significant differences between no LVDD and LVDD groups in age (63±9 vs 69±9 years p=0.205), body mass index (23±3 vs 24±4 p=0.355), BP (SBP 139±16 vs 144±20mmHg p=0.524, DBP 87±15 vs 78±14mmHg p=0.167). LV Ejection Fraction (EF) and Stroke Volume (SV) did not differ between two groups (EF 66±7 vs 69±6% p=0.471, SV 58±7 vs 62±14ml p=0.599). MSNA had tendency to increase in LVDD group compared to no LVDD group (MSNA 53±10 vs 44±12 bursts/100 heartbeats, p=0.052). Contrary to our hypothesis, AVI and CAVI did not differ between two groups (AVI 27±7 vs 29±7 p=0.398, CAVI 8.7±1.4 vs 8.6±1.4 p=0.894). However, a significant correlation was seen between AVI and MSNA in no LVDD group (r=0.57, p Conclusion AVI was significantly associated with MSNA in HT patients without LVDD, but not with LVDD. CAVI was related to AVI in HT patients with LVDD, but not without LVDD. MSNA was slightly increased in HT patients with LVDD compared to without LVDD. These results indicate that augmented SNA could contribute to the increase in arterial stiffness in HT patients without LVDD, however, this contribution might be attenuated in HT patients with LVDD. Abstract

Terahertz (THz) wave length, corresponding to intermolecular binding energy, is the key to realize a non-labeling bio-medical sensor. We aim to enhance the sensitivity by a selective resonant excitation effect of the specific chemical binding and surface plasmon at the THz band. Here, we report the non-labeling detection of biomolecular binding by topological insulator THz-SPR. Bi 2 Se 3 was processed in a microribbon array to enhance SPR in THz range. The sugar chain-lectin specific binding, which has weaker interactions than antigen-antibody binding, was observed due to the enhancement of Bi 2 Se 3 THz-SPR.

Abstract

The cut rose Rosa ‘PEKcougel’ is resistant to crown gall disease caused by Rhizobium radiobacter, and Rosa multiflora is resistant to root rot disease caused by Pythium helicoides. The resistance is heritable. We tried to combine these resistances by crossing ‘PEKcougel’ and R. multiflora ‘Matsushima No. 3’. Of plantlets raised from 121 torpedo-shaped hybrid embryos, 97 died from hypocotyl browning just after germination, another 18 died with browning of the shoot apex after true leaves expansion, and 6 survived and were grown on. Using the SCAK16583 marker, a DNA marker specific to R. multiflora, we identified three seedlings as progeny of ‘PEKcougel’ × ‘Matsushima No. 3’, and the others as selfed progeny of ‘PEKcougel’. These three progenies showed the tolerance to root rot and crown gall disease at the level intermediate between resistant and susceptible cultivars. In addition, the plants are self-compatible and are easily backcrossed with ‘PEKcougel’ and ‘Matsushima No. 3’. These progenies will contribute to the development of rootstocks with combined resistance to root rot and crown gall disease.

Abstract

Steel sheet-piles are driven into the ground to prevent failure of soils and intrusion of water. The current main function of constructing sheet-piles used as a temporary structure has problems such as low productivity, few adoption opportunities, and high cost. Therefore, a double sheet-pile method has been developed. Also, from centrifugal model tests or full-scale experiments, the effectiveness of this method had been confirmed. However, the soil behavior between two sheet-piles has not been clarified yet. Hence, the purpose of this study is to clarify the soil behavior between two sheet-piles and the mechanism of its effectiveness of the structure using X-ray CT. From experimental results,, X-ray CT images were able to visualize the location where the maximum force is applied during excavation and the form of sliding failure, and also confirmed the importance of the soil between the two sheet-piles.

Abstract

We report, for the first time, the long-awaited detection of diffuse gamma rays with energies between 100 TeV and 1 PeV in the Galactic disk. Particularly, all gamma rays above 398 TeV are observed apart from known TeV gamma-ray sources and compatible with expectations from the hadronic emission scenario in which gamma rays originate from the decay of $\pi^0$'s produced through the interaction of protons with the interstellar medium in the Galaxy. This is strong evidence that cosmic rays are accelerated beyond PeV energies in our Galaxy and spread over the Galactic disk., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Physical Review Letters

Abstract

HESS J1843–033 is a very high energy gamma-ray source whose origin remains unidentified. This work presents, for the first time, the energy spectrum of gamma rays beyond 100 TeV from the HESS J1843–033 region using the data recorded by the Tibet air shower array and its underground muon detector array. A gamma-ray source with an extension of 0.°34 ± 0.°12 is successfully detected above 25 TeV at (α, δ) = (281.°09 ± 0.°10, −3.°76 ± 0.°09) near HESS J1843–033 with a statistical significance of 6.2σ, and the source is named TASG J1844–038. The position of TASG J1844–038 is consistent with those of HESS J1843–033, eHWC J1842–035, and LHAASO J1843–0338. The measured gamma-ray energy spectrum in 25 TeV < E < 130 TeV is described with dN / dE = ( 9.70 ± 1.89 ) × 10 − 16 (E/40 TeV)−3.26±0.30 TeV−1 cm−2 s−1, and the spectral fit to the combined spectra of HESS J1843–033, LHAASO J1843–0338, and TASG J1844–038 implies the existence of a cutoff at 49.5 ± 9.0 TeV. Associations of TASG J1844–038 with SNR G28.6–0.1 and PSR J1844–0346 are also discussed in detail for the first time.

Abstract

A layered perovskite-type oxide ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{RhO}}_{4}$ was synthesized by a high-pressure technique with the support of convex-hull calculations. The crystal and electronic structure were studied by both experimental and computational tools. Structural refinements for powder x-ray diffraction data showed that ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{RhO}}_{4}$ crystallizes in a ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}{\mathrm{NiF}}_{4}$-type structure, isostructural to ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{RuO}}_{4}$ and ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{4}$. Magnetic, resistivity, and specific-heat measurements for polycrystalline samples of ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{RhO}}_{4}$ indicate that the system can be characterized as a correlated metal. Despite the close similarity to its ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{RuO}}_{4}$ counterpart in the electronic specific-heat coefficient and the Wilson ratio, ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{RhO}}_{4}$ shows no signature of superconductivity down to 0.16 K. Whereas the Fermi surface topology has reminiscent pieces of ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{RuO}}_{4}$, an electronlike ${e}_{\mathrm{g}}\ensuremath{-}({d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}})$ band descends below the Fermi level, making this compound unique also as a metallic counterpart of the spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{4}$.

Abstract

We report observations of gamma-ray emissions with energies in the 100 TeV energy region from the Cygnus region in our Galaxy. Two sources are significantly detected in the directions of the Cygnus OB1 and OB2 associations. Based on their positional coincidences, we associate one with a pulsar PSR J2032+4127 and the other mainly with a pulsar wind nebula PWN G75.2+0.1 with the pulsar moving away from its original birthplace situated around the centroid of the observed gamma-ray emission. Abstract

Cosmic rays (protons and other atomic nuclei) are believed to gain energies of petaelectronvolts (PeV) and beyond at astrophysical particle accelerators called 'PeVatrons' inside our Galaxy. Although a characteristic feature of a PeVatron is expected to be a hard gamma-ray energy spectrum that extends beyond 100 teraelectronvolts (TeV) without a cutoff, none of the currently known sources exhibits such a spectrum due to the low maximum energy of accelerated cosmic rays or insufficient detector sensitivity around 100 TeV. Here we report the observation of gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 above 10 TeV. This work provides flux data points up to and above 100 TeV and indicates that the very-high-energy gamma-ray emission above 10 TeV is well correlated with a molecular cloud rather than the pulsar PSR J2229+6114. Regarding the gamma-ray emission mechanism of G106.3+2.7, this morphological feature appears to favor a hadronic origin via the {\pi}0 decay caused by accelerated relativistic protons over a leptonic one via the inverse-Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. Furthermore, we point out that an X-ray flux upper limit on the synchrotron spectrum would provide important information to firmly establish the hadronic scenario as the mechanism of particle acceleration at the source., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy

Abstract

Terahertz band, which corresponds to the energy of inter-molecular binding, is expected to enable us a non-labeling detection such as antigen-antibody binding. We aim to enhance the sensitivity by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) combined with the signal enhancement effect due to the selective resonant excitation of the specific binding. In this study, we have focused on the topological insulators. They enhance SPR in THz band and confirm the occurrence of localized surface plasmon resonance by using periodic microstructures of well crystallized and prefer oriented Bi 2 Se 3 thin films fabricated by a pulsed laser deposition. We also observed the avidin-biotin coupling by THz-SPR, which is the first experimental observation of biological material interactions through THz-SPR using topological insulator.

Abstract

Aims: Basal-bolus therapy is associated with greater treatment burden and lower adherence compared with more simplified regimens. This post hoc analysis studied the difference between insulin degludec/liraglutide (IDegLira) and basal-bolus therapy on number of injections, dose adjustments and patient outcomes in the DUAL VII trial. Materials and methods: DUAL VII was a 26-week, open-label trial in which patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes who were using metformin and insulin glargine 100 units/mL (20-50 U) were randomized 1:1 to IDegLira (N = 252) or basal-bolus (insulin glargine U100 + insulin aspart ≤4 times/day) (N = 254). This post hoc analysis reports the observed mean number of injections and cumulative dose adjustments during 26 weeks of treatment. Patient-reported outcomes (Treatment-Related Impact Measure - Diabetes [TRIM-D] and Short Form-36 Health Survey version 2 [SF-36v2]) were collected at scheduled visits and change from baseline scores calculated. Results: The clinical benefits (non-inferior HbA1c reductions, weight benefit, less hypoglycaemia) of IDegLira vs basal-bolus therapy were achieved with fewer cumulative dose adjustments (16.6 vs 217.2, respectively) and fewer injections (1 vs ≥3 per day, respectively). Patients treated with IDegLira experienced significant improvements across all TRIM-D domains compared with those undergoing basal-bolus therapy. The SF-36v2 showed improvements in both treatment arms with no significant difference between arms in the physical component summary, but there was a significant improvement in patients treated with IDegLira in the mental component summary (P = .0228). Conclusions: These findings, combined with the DUAL VII results, suggest that IDegLira, through a more simplified regimen versus basal-bolus therapy, may help improve patient adherence and improve patient outcomes related to diabetes management, treatment burden and mental health, which in turn may assist in the timely achievement of glycaemic control in clinical practice. Abstract

The effect of resonance crossing on beam stability is studied systematically by employing a novel tabletop experimental tool and a multiparticle simulation code. A large number of ions are confined in a compact linear Paul trap to reproduce the collective beam behavior. We can prove that the ion plasma in the trap is physically equivalent to a charged-particle beam propagating through a strong focusing channel. The plasma confinement force is quickly ramped such that the trap operating point traverses linear and nonlinear resonance stop bands. Assuming a nonscaling fixed field alternating gradient accelerator composed of many identical FODO cells, we measure how much ion losses occur under diverse conditions. It is experimentally and numerically demonstrated that too slow resonance crossing leads to significant ion losses as expected. Particular attention must be paid to the linear coherent resonance excited at a quarter-integer tune. When the beam intensity is high, this type of linear stop band can seriously affect the beam quality even for rather fast resonance crossing. A scaling law is given of the emittance growth caused by the quarter-integer resonance crossing.

Abstract

Air–sea CO2 fluxes over the Pacific Ocean are known to be characterized by coherent large-scale structures that reflect not only ocean subduction and upwelling patterns, but also the combined effects of wind-driven gas exchange and biology. On the largest scales, a large net CO2 influx into the extratropics is associated with a robust seasonal cycle, and a large net CO2 efflux from the tropics is associated with substantial interannual variability. In this work, we have synthesized estimates of the net air–sea CO2 flux from a variety of products, drawing upon a variety of approaches in three sub-basins of the Pacific Ocean, i.e., the North Pacific extratropics (18–66° N), the tropical Pacific (18° S–18° N), and the South Pacific extratropics (44.5–18° S). These approaches include those based on the measurements of CO2 partial pressure in surface seawater (pCO2sw), inversions of ocean-interior CO2 data, forward ocean biogeochemistry models embedded in the ocean general circulation models (OBGCMs), a model with assimilation of pCO2sw data, and inversions of atmospheric CO2 measurements. Long-term means, interannual variations and mean seasonal variations of the regionally integrated fluxes were compared in each of the sub-basins over the last two decades, spanning the period from 1990 through 2009. A simple average of the long-term mean fluxes obtained with surface water pCO2 diagnostics and those obtained with ocean-interior CO2 inversions are −0.47 ± 0.13 Pg C yr−1 in the North Pacific extratropics, +0.44 ± 0.14 Pg C yr−1 in the tropical Pacific, and −0.37 ± 0.08 Pg C yr−1 in the South Pacific extratropics, where positive fluxes are into the atmosphere. This suggests that approximately half of the CO2 taken up over the North and South Pacific extratropics is released back to the atmosphere from the tropical Pacific. These estimates of the regional fluxes are also supported by the estimates from OBGCMs after adding the riverine CO2 flux, i.e., −0.49 ± 0.02 Pg C yr−1 in the North Pacific extratropics, +0.41 ± 0.05 Pg C yr−1 in the tropical Pacific, and −0.39 ± 0.11 Pg C yr−1 in the South Pacific extratropics. The estimates from the atmospheric CO2 inversions show large variations amongst different inversion systems, but their median fluxes are consistent with the estimates from climatological pCO2sw data and pCO2sw diagnostics. In the South Pacific extratropics, where CO2 variations in the surface and ocean interior are severely undersampled, the difference in the air–sea CO2 flux estimates between the diagnostic models and ocean-interior CO2 inversions is larger (0.18 Pg C yr−1). The range of estimates from forward OBGCMs is also large (−0.19 to −0.72 Pg C yr−1). Regarding interannual variability of air–sea CO2 fluxes, positive and negative anomalies are evident in the tropical Pacific during the cold and warm events of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation in the estimates from pCO2sw diagnostic models and from OBGCMs. They are consistent in phase with the Southern Oscillation Index, but the peak-to-peak amplitudes tend to be higher in OBGCMs (0.40 ± 0.09 Pg C yr−1) than in the diagnostic models (0.27 ± 0.07 Pg C yr−1).

Abstract

The Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measurements assess glycaemic goal attainment in patients with type 2 diabetes, incorporating factors including age and health status. Healthier patients are assigned a glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) goal of7% (low-risk [LR]) and individuals aged65 years or with comorbidities are assigned a goal of8% (high-risk [HR]). This post-hoc analysis assessed the safety and efficacy of iGlarLixi, a fixed-ratio combination of insulin glargine 100 U/mL (iGlar) and lixisenatide, in 1898 patients from the phase 3 LixiLan-L and LixiLan-O clinical trials, retrospectively classified as LR (n = 1181) or HR (n = 717). iGlarLixi was more effective in reducing HbA1c than comparators in both LR and HR patients across the LixiLan-L trial (change from baseline, 1.1% vs -0.6% for iGlar in both groups; P0.001) and the LixiLan-O trial (change from baseline, LR/HR -1.6%/-1.4% vs -1.3%/-1.2% for iGlar and -0.8%/-0.9% for lixisenatide; P0.01). iGlarLixi treatment significantly reduced postprandial glucose in both LR and HR patients (P0.001). The incidence of hypoglycaemia did not differ between risk categories in any treatment group.

Abstract

Linear and nonlinear resonant instabilities of charged-particle beams traveling in periodic quadrupole focusing channels are studied experimentally with a compact non-neutral plasma trap. The present experiments are based on the idea that the collective motion of a beam in an accelerator is physically similar to that of a one-component plasma in a trap. A linear Paul trap system named “S-POD” (simulator for particle orbit dynamics) was developed to explore a variety of space-charge-induced phenomena. To emulate lattice-dependent effects, periodic perturbations are applied to quadrupole electrodes, which gives rise to additional resonance stop bands that shift depending on the plasma density. It is confirmed that an mth-order resonance takes place when the corresponding tune of an mth-order collective mode Ω_{m} is close to a half integer.

Abstract

We analyze the Sun's shadow observed with the Tibet-III air shower array and find that the shadow's center deviates northward (southward) from the optical solar disc center in the "Away" ("Toward") IMF sector. By comparing with numerical simulations based on the solar magnetic field model, we find that the average IMF strength in the "Away" ("Toward") sector is $1.54 \pm 0.21_{\rm stat} \pm 0.20_{\rm syst}$ ($1.62 \pm 0.15_{\rm stat} \pm 0.22_{\rm syst}$) times larger than the model prediction. These demonstrate that the observed Sun's shadow is a useful tool for the quantitative evaluation of the average solar magnetic field., 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The angular displacement of the center of the observed Sun's shadow from the center of the optical solar disc tells us the information of average solar magnetic field strength in the space between the Sun and the Earth. We analyze the displacement of the Sun's shadow observed in 5 ~ 240 TeV cosmic-ray intensity with the Tibet-III air shower array during 10 years between 2000 and 2009, and compare with the MC simulations based on the coronal magnetic field model and Parker's spiral interplanetary magnetic field model. We find that the observed North-South displacement is significantly larger than the prediction of simulations. This result uniquely suggests the underestimation of the average field strength between the Sun and the Earth in our model. In this work, we will report the actual solar magnetic field strength evaluated from the observed Sun's shadow.

Abstract

We built a large (approximately 4,000 m**2) water Cherenkov- type muon detector array under the existing Tibet air shower array at 4,300 m above sea level, to observe 10-1000 TeV gamma rays from cosmic-ray accelerators in our Galaxy with wide field of view at very low background level. A gamma-ray induced air shower has significantly less muons compared with a cosmic-ray induced one. Therefore, we can effectively discriminate between primary gamma rays and cosmic-ray background events by means of counting number of muons in an air shower event by the muon detector array. We make a status report on the experiment.

Abstract

We continuously observed the Sun’s shadow in 3 TeV cosmic-ray intensity with the Tibet-III air shower array since 2000. We find a clear solar-cycle variation of the deficit intensity in the Sun’s shadow during the periods between 2000 and 2009. The MC simulation of the Sun’s shadow based on the coronal magnetic field model does not well reproduce the observed deficit intensity around the solar maximum. However, when we exclude the transit periods during ICMEs towards to the Earth, the MC simulation shows better reproducibility. In the present paper, we report on the MC simulation and the analysis method of the Sun’s shadow observed by the Tibet-III array.

Abstract

We have started a new hybrid air shower experiment at Yangbajing (4300 m a.s.l.) in Tibet in February 2014. This new hybrid experiment consists of the YAC-II comprised of 124 core detectors placed in the form of a square grid of 1.9 m spacing covering about 500 m2, the Tibet-III air shower array with the total area of about 50,000 m2 and the underground MD array consisting of 80 cells, with the total area of about 4,200 m2. This hybrid-array system is used to observe air showers of high energy celestial gamma-ray origin and those of nuclear-component origin. In this paper, a short review of the experiment will be followed by an overview on the current results on energy spectrum and chemical composition of CRs and test of hadronic interaction models.

Abstract

Streptozotocin (STZ), a naturally occurring chemical, is toxic to the various kinds of cells such as insulin-producing beta cells. However, the beneficial effect of STZ on neuronal cells such as neurite outgrowth-inducing activity has been unknown. In this study, we examined the effect of STZ on neurite outgrowth in mouse neuronal Neuro2a cells. STZ (0.01 mM~5 mM) exerted remarkable neurite outgrowth-inducing activity in Neuro2a cells in a concentration dependent manner. STZ also had the same neurite outgrowth-inducing activity as that of retinoic acid (RA), which is well known neurite outgrowth inducer. As with the result of RA treatment, STZ administration increased MAP2-positive cells. The MAP2-positive cells reflect neurite outgrowth-induced cells. STZ (0.01 mM~5 mM) did not induce cell death, but significantly decreased cell proliferation. The serine/threonine kinase Akt, a downstream target of phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K), was transiently phosphorylated at Ser473 and at Thr303 by STZ (5 mM) administration. Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β), which has been reported to be inactivated by Akt, was also transiently phosphorylated at Ser9 by STZ (5 mM) administration. In addition, a blocker of PI3K, LY294002 (10 μM), significantly attenuated STZ-induced neurite outgrowth. These results suggest that STZ induces neurite outgrowth via activation of PI3K-Akt signaling pathway and GSK3β inhibition.

Abstract

The objective was to develop a culture system that produced blastocyst stage embryos from rabbit oocytes grown in vitro. Two experiments were performed. First, various concentrations of fetal bovine serum (FBS, 0, 0.05, 0.5 and 5%) were used in the culture medium for in vitro growth (IVG) of oocytes recovered from follicles 200 to 299 μm in diameter. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was performed on mature oocytes obtained after IVG for 8 days and in vitro maturation for 14 to 16 h. Rates of survival and pronuclear formation after ICSI were higher for oocytes grown in a medium with 0.05% FBS compared to oocytes grown in a medium lacking FBS (97.6 vs. 76.9%, 97.5 vs. 70%, P < 0.1). The rate of development to the blastocyst stage was also higher in the medium containing 0.05% FBS than in the medium lacking FBS (9.5 vs. 17.9%, P < 0.05). Next, using oocytes recovered from follicles 200 to 399 μm in diameter which were cultured in 0.05% FBS, oxygen consumption and the number of cells were analyzed. Blastocysts from oocytes grown in vitro with 0.05% FBS had reduced oxygen consumption and number of cells compared with those from ovulated oocytes (21.66 ± 4.54 × 10(14) vs. 50.19 ± 4.61 × 10(14) mol/sec, 244 ± 25 vs. 398 ± 24, P < 0.05). Rabbit oocytes grown in vitro with 0.05% FBS achieved pregnancy, but pregnancies were not maintained to term. In conclusion, the addition of 0.05% FBS to the culture medium for IVG improved developmental competence of rabbit oocytes grown in vitro.

Abstract

The sidereal cosmic-ray anisotropy at TeV energies has a large-scale deficit region distributed between 150 and 240 degrees in right ascension, which is called the “loss-cone”. The Milagro experiment reported the detection of a steady increase in the loss-cone amplitude at 6 TeV from July 2000 to July 2007. In this paper, we examine Milagro’s claim using the data collected by the Tibet air-shower experiment from November 1999 through December 2008. No time dependence was found in the loss-cone amplitude at 4.4, 6.2, and 11 TeV. If the increase in the loss-cone amplitude were, as Milagro argued, due to variations in the heliosphere in relation to solar activities, the same tendency would be seen at sub-TeV energies where the anisotropy is far more sensitive to solar activities. At 0.6 TeV, however, Matsushiro underground muon observatory reported no significant increase in the loss-cone amplitude during the corresponding period.

Abstract

Med. 28, 1221–1228 (2011) Abstract Aims To investigate whether a reduced incidence of cardiovascular disease in Type 2 diabetes can be achieved in a newly recruited cohort following the recently advanced concept of multifactorial treatment and followed in primary care settings as compared with earlier cohorts. Methods A prospective study was performed in primary care settings at multiple clinics nationwide in the Japan Diabetes Clinical Data Management (JDDM) study group. Subjects were 2984 patients with Type 2 diabetes without prevalent cardiovascular disease. The main outcome measure was the first event of non-fatal or fatal coronary heart disease, ischaemic stroke or peripheral artery disease, and the incidence was compared with other representative cohorts. Results There were 90 cardiovascular events over 10 827 person-years of follow-up with a dropout rate of 6%. The incidences (per 1000 person-years, 95% confidence interval) of composite, coronary heart disease, ischaemic stroke and peripheral artery disease in the JDDM study were 8.3 (6.6–10.0), 4.4 (3.2–5.6), 3.1 (2.1–4.2), and 0.7 (0.2–1.2), respectively. Abstract

The observation of the extensive air showers has been carried out since 1990 by Tibet air-shower array to study the origin of the cosmic-rays. In order to investigate the chemical composition around the knee, air-shower core detector was used in two experimental phases aiming to separate light primary elements (proton and helium). In a first phase experiment made in 1996-1999, primary proton and helium spectra were measured using a hybrid detector consisted of Tibet II air-shower array, emulsion chambers, and burst detectors. The result indicated that the fraction of light elements among the all particle spectrum is less than 30%. We performed the second phase experiment in 2002-2005 to measure proton + helium together to confirm the previous result with higher statistics by improving the detection efficiency for the air-shower cores. The P + He spectrum was obtained in a good agreement with previous result by several times higher statistics. The flux of the light elements, together with the all-particle energy spectrum, indicates the dominance of nuclei heavier than helium in the energy range around the knee. We also present the outline of the next phase experiment, which is to measure the heavy elements around the knee, using low threshold air-shower core detector named YAC. (C) 2010 COSPAR. Abstract

We have upgraded the new Tibet ASgamma experiment in China since 2014 to measure the chemical composition of cosmic rays around the knee. This hybrid experiment consist of an air-shower-core detector array (YAC-II) to detect high energy electromagnetic component, the Tibet air-shower array (Tibet-III) and a large underground water-Cherenkov muon-detector array (MD). We have carried out a detailed air-shower Monte Carlo (MC) simulation to study the performance of the hybrid detectors by using CORSIKA (version 7.5000), which includes EPOS-LHC, QGSJETII-04, SIBYLL2.1 and SIBYLL2.3 hadronic interaction models. The preliminary results of the interaction model checking above 50 TeV energy region are reported in this paper, and the primary proton and helium spectra in the energy range 50 TeV to 1015 eV was derived from YAC-I data and is smoothly connected with direct observation data at lower energies and also with our previously reported works at higher energies within statistical errors. The knee of the (P+He) spectra is located around 400 TeV. The interaction model dependence in deriving the primary (P+He) spectra is found to be small (less than 25% in absolute intensity, 10% in position of the knee), and the composition model dependence is less than 10% in absolute intensity.

Abstract

We analyze the temporal variation of the solar diurnal anisotropy of the multi-TeV cosmic-ray intensity observed with the Tibet air shower array from 2000 to 2009, covering the maximum and minimum of the 23rd solar cycle. We comfirm that a remarkable additional anisotropy component is superposed on the Compton-Getting anisotropy at 4.0 TeV, while its amplitude decreases at higher energy regions. In constrast to the additional anisotropy reported by the Matsushiro experiment at 0.6 TeV, we find the residual component measured by Tibet at multi-TeV energies is consistent with being stable, with a fairly constant amplitude of 0.041% ± 0.003% and a phase at around 07.17 ± 00.16 local solar time at 4.0 TeV. This suggests the additional anisotropy observed by the Tibet experiment could result from mechanisms unrelated to solar activities.

Abstract

A hybrid experiment has been started by the ASγ experiment at Yangbajing (4300m a.s.l.) in Tibet since May 2009, that consists of a high-energy air-shower-core array (YAC-I) and a high-density air-shower array (Tibet-III). In this paper, we report our results to check the hadronic interaction models SIBYLL2.3, SIBYLL2.1, EPOS-LHC and QGSJETII-04 in the multi-tens TeV energy region using YAC-I+Tibet-III experimental data from May 2009 through January 2010. The effective live time is calculated as 106.05 days. The results show that the description of transverse momentum, inelastic cross-section and inelasticity for the 4 hadronic interaction models is consistent with YAC-I experimental data within 15% systematic errors range in the forward region below 100 TeV. Among them, the EPOS-LHC model is the best hadronic interaction model. Furthermore, we find that the H4a composition model is the best one below the 100 TeV energy region.

Abstract

The light output responses for protons and carbon nuclei in the KamLAND liquid scintillator were precisely measured using a monochromatic neutron beam. The observed response for proton recoils is well described by Birks formula with the higher-order correction, for the recoil energy from 424 keV to 10.5 MeV. The response for carbon recoils is also well described by modifying the Birks formula with the nuclear energy loss terms, for the measured recoil energy from 171 keV to 2.2 MeV. The obtained light output responses were used to estimate the background energy spectrum of the C 13 ( α , n ) O 16 reaction in the KamLAND. The systematic uncertainty of the energy scale in the expected background spectrum was further improved with the measured light output responses.
