Abstract GPR34 is a recently identified G-protein coupled receptor, which has an immunomodulatory role and recognizes lysophosphatidylserine (LysoPS) as a putative ligand. Here, we report cryo-electron microscopy structures of human GPR34-Gi complex bound with one of two ligands bound: either the LysoPS analogue S3E-LysoPS, or M1, a derivative of S3E-LysoPS in which oleic acid is substituted with a metabolically stable aromatic fatty acid surrogate. The ligand-binding pocket is laterally open toward the membrane, allowing lateral entry of lipidic agonists into the cavity. The amine and carboxylate groups of the serine moiety are recognized by the charged residue cluster. The acyl chain of S3E-LysoPS is bent and fits into the L-shaped hydrophobic pocket in TM4-5 gap, and the aromatic fatty acid surrogate of M1 fits more appropriately. Molecular dynamics simulations further account for the LysoPS-regioselectivity of GPR34. Thus, using a series of structural and physiological experiments, we provide evidence that chemically unstable 2-acyl LysoPS is the physiological ligand for GPR34. Overall, we anticipate the present structures will pave the way for development of novel anticancer drugs that specifically target GPR34.

Different fertilization regimes in biofloc systems influence the predominance of distinct bacterial populations, impacting water quality and organism performance. This study evaluates the growth and nutrient absorption of the macroalgae Ulva lactuca when cultivated in an integrated system with Penaeus vannamei and Oreochromis niloticus in chemoautotrophic and heterotrophic systems. The experiment lasted 45 days and comprised two treatments, each with three replicates: chemoautotrophic—utilizing chemical fertilizers; heterotrophic—employing inoculum from mature biofloc shrimp cultivation, supplemented with organic fertilizers. Each treatment consisted of three systems, each containing a 4 m3 tank for shrimp, 0.7 m3 for tilapia, and 0.35 m3 for macroalgae, with continuous water circulation between tanks and constant aeration. Water quality analyses were carried out during the experiment, as were the performances of the macroalgae and animals. The data were subjected to a statistical analysis. Results revealed an increase in macroalgae biomass and the removal of nitrate (57%) and phosphate (47%) during cultivation, with a higher specific growth rate observed in the chemoautotrophic treatment. Nonetheless, the heterotrophic treatment exhibited higher levels of protein in the macroalgae (18% dry matter) and phosphate removal rates (56%), along with superior maintenance of water quality parameters. Tilapia performance varied across treatments, with a higher final weight and weight gain recorded in the heterotrophic treatment. The recycling of water from an ongoing biofloc cultivation with organic fertilization demonstrated viability for macroalgae cultivation within an integrated system involving shrimp and fish.

Photoinduced phase transition is a central issue in the field of non-equilibrium quantum physics. Here, the authors demonstrate that a terahertz electric-field pulse changes a Mott insulator of an organic molecular compound to a macroscopically polarized charge-order state.

Summary: We report the case of a 95-year-old man with soft tissue deficiency associated with a pubic abscess that occurred 30 years after prostate cancer surgery and radiation therapy. A fistula with purulent discharge without any obvious cause appeared in the midline of the lower abdomen and progressed to a soft tissue defect in which several calcium phosphate stones of 5-8 mm in diameter were found. Computed tomography showed calcium deposits on the surface of the pubis and irregular zonal calcifications extending from the pubis to the medial region of both thighs.Conservative treatment did not improve the patient's condition; thus, surgical treatment was performed. The pedicled rectus femoris muscle flap was elevated from the left thigh and transferred to fill the tissue defect, then a split thickness skin graft was applied on it. The tissue defect was successfully repaired, and the patient was able to regain ambulation ability.In the present case, it was presumed that urine exudation around the bladder due to radiation cystitis was involved in the formation of ectopic calculi and subsequent infection. In reconstructing a complex defect associated with infection, using muscle flaps to fill the dead space with well vascularized tissue is considered to be appropriate. In our case, we chose a rectus femoris muscle flap, which has advantages in volume and versatility of transposition owing to long vascular pedicle and requires no microsurgical vascular anastomosis. As a result, the preoperative activity was maintained, the infection was treated, and a good course was obtained.

The Prede sky radiometer measures direct solar irradiance and the angular distribution of diffuse radiances at the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelengths. These data are utilized for the remote sensing of aerosols, water vapor, ozone, and clouds, but the calibration constant, which is the sensor output current of the extraterrestrial solar irradiance at the mean distance between Earth and the Sun, is needed. The aerosol channels, which are the weak gas absorption wavelengths of 340, 380, 400, 500, 675, 870, and 1020 nm, can be calibrated by an on-site self-calibration method, the Improved Langley method. This on-site self-calibration method is useful for the continuous long-term observation of aerosol properties. However, the continuous long-term observation of precipitable water vapor (PWV) by the sky radiometer remains challenging because calibrating the water vapor absorption channel of 940 nm generally relies on the standard Langley (SL) method at limited observation sites (e.g., the Mauna Loa Observatory) and the transfer of the calibration constant by a side-by-side comparison with the reference sky radiometer calibrated by the SL method. In this study, we developed the SKYMAP algorithm, a new on-site method of self-calibrating the water vapor channel of the sky radiometer using diffuse radiances normalized by direct solar irradiance (normalized radiances). Because the sky radiometer measures direct solar irradiance and diffuse radiance using the same sensor, the normalization cancels the calibration constant included in the measurements. The SKYMAP algorithm consists of three steps. First, aerosol optical and microphysical properties are retrieved using direct solar irradiances and normalized radiances at aerosol channels. The aerosol optical properties at the water vapor channel are interpolated from those at aerosol channels. Second, PWV is retrieved using the angular distribution of the normalized radiances at the water vapor channel. Third, the calibration constant at the water vapor channel is estimated from the transmittance of PWV and aerosol optical properties. Intensive sensitivity tests of the SKYMAP algorithm using simulated data of the sky radiometer showed that the calibration constant is retrieved reasonably well for PWV cm, which indicates that the SKYMAP algorithm can calibrate the water vapor channel on-site in dry conditions. Next, the SKYMAP algorithm was applied to actual measurements under the clear-sky and low-PWV ( cm) conditions at two sites, Tsukuba and Chiba, Japan, and the annual mean calibration constants at the two sites were determined. The SKYMAP-derived calibration constants were 10.1 % and 3.2 % lower, respectively, than those determined by a side-by-side comparison with the reference sky radiometer. After determining the calibration constant, we obtained PWV from the direct solar irradiances in both the dry and wet seasons. The retrieved PWV values corresponded well to those derived from a global-navigation-satellite-system–global-positioning-system receiver, a microwave radiometer, and an AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) sun–sky radiometer at both sites. The correlation coefficients were greater than 0.96. We calculated the bias errors and the root mean square errors by comparing PWV between the DSRAD (direct solar irradiance) algorithm and other instruments. The magnitude of the bias error and the root mean square error were and  cm for PWV cm, respectively. However, our method tended to underestimate PWV in the wet conditions, and the magnitude of the bias error and the root mean square error became large, and  cm for PWV>3 cm, respectively. This problem was mainly due to the overestimation of the aerosol optical thickness before the retrieval of PWV. These results show that the SKYMAP algorithm enables us to observe PWV over the long term, based on its unique on-site self-calibration method.

In organic molecular compounds, intramolecular vibration is sometimes coupled with intermolecular charge transfer (CT). In such materials, vibrational excitation by a midinfrared (MIR) pulse causes collective intermolecular CTs that can be a route to an electronic-state conversion. Here, we report that an ionic-to-neutral (IN) conversion in tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil (TTF-CA) can be driven by a strong vibrational excitation induced by an MIR pulse. Using MIR-pump subcycle-reflectivity-probe and second-harmonic-generation-probe measurements, we discuss the coherent electron and lattice dynamics during and after the IN conversion, which are distinct from the dynamics of the photoinduced transition by electronic excitation alone.

The first intensive multicomponent ground-based remote-sensing observations by sky radiometer and multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) were performed simultaneously at the SKYNET Phimai site located in central Thailand (15.18∘ N, 102.56∘ E) from January to April 2016. The period corresponds to the dry season associated with intense biomass burning (BB) activity around the site. The near-surface concentration of formaldehyde (HCHO) retrieved from MAX-DOAS was found to be a useful tracer for absorption aerosols from BB plumes, when BB was the dominant source of HCHO and absorption aerosols over other sources. As the HCHO concentration tripled from 3 to 9 ppbv, the ratio of gaseous glyoxal to HCHO concentrations in daytime decreased from ∼0.04 to ∼0.03, responding presumably to the increased contribution of volatile organic compound emissions from BB. In addition, clear increases in aerosol absorption optical depths (AAODs) retrieved from sky radiometer observations were seen with the HCHO enhancement. At a HCHO of 9 ppbv, AAOD at a wavelength of 340 nm reached as high as ∼0.15±0.03. The wavelength dependence of AAODs at 340–870 nm was quantified by the absorption Ångström exponent (AAE), providing evidence for the presence of brown carbon aerosols at an AAE of 1.5±0.2. Thus, our multicomponent observations around central Thailand are expected to provide unique constraints for understanding physical–chemical–optical properties of BB plumes.

The collective behavior of an ion cloud confined in a linear Paul trap is physically almost equivalent to that of a relativistic beam traveling in a particle accelerator. This fact provides a new possibility for experimental beam-dynamics studies that can be done without relying on large-scale machines. We have constructed a compact ion trap to explore various accelerator-physics issues in a local tabletop environment. The present trap system is designed particularly for the study of high-intensity short hadron bunches typical in linear accelerators. Resonance-induced ion losses are measured and plotted as a function of the betatron and synchrotron phase advances over a wide range, which offers a piece of indisputable experimental evidence for the presence of various betatron and synchrobetatron resonance stop bands. We confirm that these instability bands shift in the stability map depending on the ion density. The recently proposed stop-band diagram, free from the conventional concept of incoherent tune spread, is employed to explain the experimental observations.

The space-charge-induced resonance band just above the betatron phase advance of 90° per cell is of great practical importance. The instability is closely related to the linear collective mode and can thus give rise to severe emittance growth at high beam density. In a circular machine, this type of second-order resonance occurs not only at half-integer tunes but also near quarter-integer tunes, depending on the lattice superperiodicity. Self-consistent numerical simulations are carried out to elucidate the resonance feature above the 90° cell tune. The present results suggest the existence of three different resonance mechanisms working there; namely, the fourth-order incoherent resonance in the beam tail, the second-order and fourth-order coherent resonances in the beam core. It is reconfirmed that no serious emittance growth occurs even if particles deep inside the core satisfy the incoherent resonance condition. The recently proposed stop-band diagram, free from the concept of incoherent tune spread, appears to be consistent with the numerical observations.

We report a high performance mid-infrared pump visible probe measurement system, which can measure phase-sensitive responses to a mid-infrared pulse along the oscillating electromagnetic field. In this system, the pump light is a phase-locked mid-infrared pulse with a temporal width of 100 fs, which is produced via difference frequency generation (DFG) from two idler pulses of two optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) that are excited by the same Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier. The probe pulse is a visible pulse with a temporal width of 9 fs and is generated from a custom-built non-collinear OPA. By measuring the electric-field waveforms of mid-infrared pump pulses with electro-optic sampling and evaluating their carrier envelope phase (CEP) and the temporal positions of their envelopes relative to ultrashort visible probe pulses, we are able to perform double feedback corrections that eliminate both the following sources of drift. The CEP drift in mid-infrared pulses originating from fluctuations in the difference of optical-path lengths of the two idler pulses before the DFG is corrected by inserting a wedge plate in one idler path, and the drift in pump–probe delay times due to fluctuations in the difference of the overall optical-path lengths of the pump and probe pulses is corrected with mechanical delay lines. In this double feedback system, the absolute carrier phase of mid-infrared pulses can be fixed within 200 mrad and errors in the measurement of phase-sensitive responses can be reduced to within 1 fs over a few tens of hours.

Understanding the dynamics of cuprates following photoexcitation can provide insights into the complex coupling mechanisms that underlie their exotic equilibrium behaviour. Here the authors use pump-probe reflection spectroscopy to investigate the nonequilibrium spin dynamics of Mott-insulating Nd2CuO4.

The space-charge potential can be a source of various resonances in high-intensity hadron bunches traveling in linear accelerators at relatively low energy. Those natural resonances, which may occur even without external driving fields, have to be avoided carefully to minimize undesired beam loss. We perform self-consistent multiparticle simulations systematically to locate major resonance stop bands in the tune diagram, starting from equipartitioned and nonequipartitioned beams. Serious excitation of synchrobetatron resonances is confirmed, depending on the emittance condition at injection. It is demonstrated that a synchrobetatron difference resonance of any order can be suppressed strongly by controlling the ratio of the transverse and longitudinal projected emittances. The equipartitioned linac design is shown to broaden the usable operating area in the tune space, though that has almost nothing to do with thermodynamic effects.

In the Comment on our paper [Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 22, 074201 (2019)PRABCJ2469-988810.1103/PhysRevAccelBeams.22.074201], Hofmann claims that our conclusions are based on a questionable interpretation of Vlasov’s equation and an over-interpretation of our multiparticle simulations. This assertion, however, comes largely from his misinterpretations of the essence of our work and proposed resonance condition. His criticism based on experimental data from some operating machines has also missed the point; we see no essential conflict between our arguments and experimental observations. While most of the questions raised by Hofmann have already been answered in our original paper above and previous publications, we take this opportunity to provide more information and explanation for clarity.

PURPOSE: This study is a systematic literature review and meta-analysis concerning the use of a testosterone synthetic analog, oxandrolone, and its use in severe adult burns. METHODS: Randomized prospective clinical studies, in English, Portuguese or Spanish, were sought on the following databases: MEDLINE, COCHRANE, EMBASE and LILACS. There was no restriction in relation to the publication date. RESULTS: This search produced 24 studies on MEDLINE and twelve articles were presented on the COCHRANE database .Sixteen were excluded due to the title not being related to this search or by including children. Of the eigth residual studies, after adaptation to the inclusion criteria, only four were selected. After analyzing the results, two were discarded since they did not present adequate patient characterization and the facts on these articles were analyzed differently from the others, hindering the meta-analysis. This paper addresses the generalization of the single-particle betatron resonance condition derived by Courant and Snyder more than a half century ago. A two-dimensional resonance condition including the effect of space-charge interaction was recently conjectured from one-dimensional Vlasov predictions made by Sacherer, Okamoto, and Yokoya [K. Ito et al., Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 20, 064201 (2017)PRABCJ2469-988810.1103/PhysRevAccelBeams.20.064201]. The condition is remarkably simple which only contains a few measurable quantities and indicates the possibility that twice as many resonance stop bands as expected from the conventional incoherent picture may exist at high beam density. Self-consistent multiparticle simulations are performed systematically to locate low-order stop bands in the tune diagram. The proposed betatron resonance formula is shown to explain the basic feature of numerical observations, which suggests that no serious incoherent resonance is activated inside the phase-space core of a dense beam matched to the external linear focusing potential. It is confirmed that the coherent tune-shift factor of any collective mode is less than unity and practically considered as a constant over the whole tune space in a typical high-intensity storage ring. The procedure for finding the optimum operating point of the ring is discussed on the basis of the coherent picture instead of the commonly used picture relying on the concept of incoherent tune spread. Despite years of theoretical efforts by many researchers, the coherent resonance concept is still not being employed for the construction of a stability tune diagram. We here provide a simple prescription to draw the diagram quickly. The present study also indicates the possibility of complete suppression of emittance exchange on particular difference resonances by choosing a proper emittance ratio.

An extensive experimental study is performed to confirm fundamental resonance bands of an intense hadron beam propagating through an alternating gradient linear transport channel. The present work focuses on the most common lattice geometry called “FODO” or “doublet” that consists of two quadrupoles of opposite polarities. The tabletop ion-trap system “S-POD” (Simulator of Particle Orbit Dynamics) developed at Hiroshima University is employed to clarify the parameter-dependence of coherent beam instability. S-POD can provide a non-neutral plasma physically equivalent to a charged-particle beam in a periodic focusing potential. In contrast with conventional experimental approaches relying on large-scale machines, it is straightforward in S-POD to control the doublet geometry characterized by the quadrupole filling factor and drift-space ratio. We verify that the resonance feature does not essentially change depending on these geometric factors. A few clear stop bands of low-order resonances always appear in the same pattern as previously found with the sinusoidal focusing model. All stop bands become widened and shift to the higher-tune side as the beam density is increased. In the space-charge-dominated regime, the most dangerous stop band is located at the bare betatron phase advance slightly above 90 degrees. Experimental data from S-POD suggest that this severe resonance is driven mainly by the linear self-field potential rather than by nonlinear external imperfections and, therefore, unavoidable at high beam density. The instability of the third-order coherent mode generates relatively weak but noticeable stop bands near the phase advances of 60 and 120 degrees. The latter sextupole stop band is considerably enhanced by lattice imperfections. In a strongly asymmetric focusing channel, extra attention may have to be paid to some coupling resonance lines induced by the Coulomb potential. Our interpretations of experimental data are supported by theoretical predictions and systematic multiparticle simulations.

More than 10 ^7 electrons and 10 ^5 positrons with energy less than a few eV were confined simultaneously for the first time in a compact magnetic mirror trap with plugging potentials. The exponential decay time constant of the confined positrons exceeded 70 ms at the beginning of the simultaneous confinement. Particle simulations in the early stages of the mixing process were also conducted. The results obtained in the experiments and simulations suggested that an improved setup would make it possible to investigate the unexplored field of low-energy electron–positron plasmas experimentally.

This paper addresses a detailed experimental study of collective instability bands generated near every half-integer tune per lattice period by coherent dipole and quadrupole resonances. Both instabilities appear side by side or overlap each other but are mostly separable because the dipole resonance often creates a narrower stop band accompanied by more severe particle losses. The separation of these low-order resonance bands becomes greater as the beam intensity increases. In principle, the double stop-band structure can be formed even without machine imperfections when the beam’s initial phase-space profile is deviated from the ideal stationary distribution. The tabletop ion-trap system called “S-POD” is employed to experimentally demonstrate the parameter dependence of the double stop-band structure. Numerical simulations are also performed for comparison with experimental observations.

OBJETIVOS: Avaliar o desempenho na fluência verbal em nossa população e verificar a influência da idade e escolaridade. MÉTODOS: Foram entrevistados 336 indivíduos sem queixas neurológicas ou psiquiátricas, através do Mini-Exame do Estado Mental (MEM) e geração de animais em um minuto. Para efeito comparativo e para verificação dos níveis de corte, foram examinados 65 indivíduos com quadro de perda cognitiva, acompanhados no ambulatório de Neurologia do Comportamento da EPM. RESULTADOS: Na população "normal" tivemos média de 13,84 animais por minuto. Para os grupos de escolaridade: 11,92, para analfabetos; 12,82, para indivíduos com até 4 anos incompletos; 13,45, para os de 4 a 8 anos incompletos; 15,88 para os com 8 ou mais anos de escolaridade. Houve diferença significante entre eles (p= 0,0001). Para os grupos etários, tivemos médias de: 13,79, para aqueles com idade inferior a 65 anos; 13.92 para os com idade igual ou superior a 65 anos (sem diferença estatística). Determinamos para esses grupos dois níveis de corte: 9 para indivíduos com até 8 anos de escolaridade com sensibilidade de 75 % para analfabetos, 100 % para baixa escolaridade, 87 % para média escolaridade; e especificidade de 79 % para analfabetos, 84 % para baixa escolaridade, 88 % para média escolaridade. Para o grupo de alta escolaridade o escore de corte foi de 13, com sensibilidade de 86 % e especificidade de 67 %. CONCLUSÃO: Devemos utilizar níveis diferenciados de corte no teste de fluência verbal, em nosso meio, considerando os efeitos da escolaridade sobre o desempenho neste teste.OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the performance on verbal fluency (VF) in our population in a Brazilian sample checking the influence of age and literacy. METHODS: 336 people without neurological or psychiatric complaints evaluated through Mini-Mental State Examination and VF (animals). For comparison, and to determine cut-off points, 65 people with cognitive loss followed at our clinic were also evaluated. RESULTS: We found a mean of 13.8 animals in 1 minute, with the following distribution: illiterates, 11.9; up 4 years of education, 12.8; 4 to 7 years, 13.4; 8 years or more, 15.8 (p= 0.0001). In relation to age the means were: up to 64 years, 13.7; 65 years or more, 13.9. There was no difference between the two groups. The cut-off points were 9 for people under 8 years of education with a sensitivity of 75% for illiterates, 100% for low educational level (up 4 years),and 87% for middle level (4 to 7 years). The specificity was respectively 79%, 84%, and 88%. For the high educational level the mean was 13 with a sensitivity of 86% and specificity of 67%. CONCLUSIONS: In the VF (animals) there is a significant influence of schooling and different cut-off points should be used.

Two-mode squeezed states, generated via non-degenerate parametric down-conversion, are invariably revealed via their entangled vacuum or correlated thermal fluctuations. Here, two-mode thermal squeezed states, generated in an electromechanical system, are made bright by means of degenerate parametric amplification of their constituent modes to the point where they are almost perfect, even when seeded from low intensity non-degenerate parametric down-conversion. More dramatically, activating the degenerate parametric resonances of the underlying modes yields perfect correlations which can be resolved via the coordinated switching of their phase bi-stable vibrations, without recourse to monitoring their thermal fluctuations. This ability to enhance the two-mode squeezed states and to decipher them without needing to observe their intrinsic noise is supported by both analytical and numerical modelling and it suggests that the technical constraints to making this phenomenon more widely available can be dramatically relaxed.

We present an experimental study aimed at exploring integer resonance crossing with a focus on nonscaling fixed field alternating gradient accelerators. The method uses the Simulator of Particle Orbit Dynamics system at Hiroshima University based on a compact ion trap known as a Paul trap. In a setup that mimics the Electron Model for Many Applications nonscaling fixed field alternating gradient accelerator, we have verified the theoretical prediction of the coherent excitation of dipole motion over a wide range of errors and crossing speeds. In addition, the cancellation of amplitude growth dependent on the relative betatron oscillation phase between two consecutive resonances is observed and studied. We also explore nonlinear effects and, in particular, the effects of amplitude-dependent tune shifts and find that these nonlinear effects are a key factor in understanding our experimental results.
