Abstract

We determined scattering length and effective range of ¥E¥E scattering for the ¥E¥E relative energy (M¥E¥E-2M¥E) from ¥E¥E threshold to 30 MeV/c2. Phase shift of the ¥E¥E wave function which described by scattering length and effective range was determined by fitting the ¥E¥E mass spectrum. The obtained scattering length -0.10+0.37-1.56 i¾ 0.04, and effective range 13.90 +14.35-9.13 i¾ 10.53 fm is the most consistent with the values predicted by using a series of the Nijmegen soft core models NSC97's. However the predicted values by using the Nijmegen hard core model ND (G-matrix), the extended soft core model ESC00, and the Kyoto-Niigata FSS are out of three standard deviations from the determined scattering parameters. Further, we determine ¥E¥E potential by fitting the ¥E¥E invariant mass spectrum using numerically solved ¥E¥E wave function with two-Gaussian shaped potential well. The ¥E¥E scattering parameters derived from the wave function are found to be scattering length -0.09, and effective range 29.34 fm with a maximum phase shift of 2.4 deg.

Abstract

We determine ΛΛ scattering parameters from a ΛΛ invariant mass spectrum that was obtained by 12 C (K-, K+ΛΛ) reaction at the KEK Proton Synchrotron. In the framework of Watson's procedure, the obtained scattering length [Formula: see text] and effective range [Formula: see text] are most consistent with the values predicted by using the Nijmegen soft core models (NSC97's). However, the predicted values by using the Nijmegen hard-core ND ( G -matrix) and the extended soft-core (ESC00) models are out of two standard deviations from the determined scattering parameters.

Abstract

We have observed three λ-ray transitions in Λ 16 O from both 7MeV excited spin-flip and non-spin-flip partners (2−, 1 2 − ) to the ground-state doublet (1 1 − , 0−) via the 16O(K −, π−) reaction. The 7MeV excitation energies of the spin-doublet members (2−, 1 2 − ) were determined to be 6784 ± 4 ± 4 keV and 6562 ± 1 ± 2 keV, respectively, and thus the spacing was obtained to be 222 ± 4 ± 5 keV. This is the first observation of the spin-flip state directly populated by the (K −, π−) reaction. Moreover, such directly populated spin-flip and non-spin-flip partners were resolved for the first time.

Abstract

An event emitting a Σ- -hyperon from a Ξ- -hyperon nuclear capture at rest has been observed in a hybrid-emulsion experiment. The event has been analyzed as the first observation of the weak decay of the S = - 2 system.

Abstract

A hyperon–nucleon scattering experiment, KEK-PS E289, was carried out at the K2 beam line in KEK. We adopted a scintillating fiber active target as a hydrogen target for hyperon production and subsequent hyperon–nucleon scattering. We collected more data than in a previous experiment, KEK-PS E251. In this paper, the differential cross sections for Σ+p elastic scattering in the incident momentum range from 350 to 750 MeV/c are presented and compared with theoretical predictions from the Nijmegen group (Nijmegen Soft Core 97) and the Kyoto–Niigata group (RGM-FSS and fss2).

Abstract

We performed an experiment to measure γ rays of hyperfragments produced by stopped K − reactions on light ( A ⩽ 12 ) targets (KEK-PS E509). We clearly observed an E2 transition ( 5 / 2 + → 1 / 2 + ) in 7ΛLi with 10B, 11B and 12C targets and obtained the γ-ray intensity to be ( 7.5 ± 1.6 ) × 10 −4 per stopped K − for 10B target. In addition, a candidate for a new hypernuclear γ ray was observed. These results show that this method is quite suitable for the systematic study of hypernuclei.

Abstract

The present status of hypernuclear gamma-ray spectroscopy with Hyperball is summarized. We observed two gamma transitions of 16-Lambda-O(1- -> 1-,0-) and obtained the strength of the Lambda-N tensor force. In 10B(K-,pi- gamma) data, we did not observe the spin-flip M1 transition of 10-Lambda-B(2- -> 1-), but gamma rays from hyperfragments such as 7-Lambda-Li(7/2+ -> 5/2+) and 9-Lambda-Be(3/2+ ->1/2+) were observed. In 11B(pi+,K+ gamma) data, we observed six gamma transitions of 11_Lambda-B. We also attempted an inclusive gamma-ray measurement with stopped K- beam.

Abstract

We observed two γ-ray transitions of 16ΛO in the 16O( K − , π − γ ) reaction using a germanium detector array, Hyperball. The γ rays are assigned as the M1 transitions from the 6 MeV excited state ( 1 − ) to the ground state doublet ( 1 − , 0 − ). The energies of the γ rays are 6534.1 ± 1.5 keV and 6560.2 ± 1.3 keV , and the energy spacing is 26.1 ± 2.0 keV , which corresponds to the ground state doublet spacing. From their yield ratio of 0.65 ± 0.11 ( N ( 6534 ) / N ( 6560 ) ) , the spin order of the ground state doublet is determined. This result gives a small value for the ΛN tensor force strength.

Abstract

Using a large-acceptance germanium detector array (Hyperball), we measured a γ -ray spectrum in coincidence with production of 7 Λ Li bound states in the 7 Li( π + , K + ) reaction. We observed a γ -ray peak at 429 keV due to the transition from the first excited state of 7 Be produced by the weak decay of 7 Λ Li, 7 Λ Li → 7 Be ∗ (1/2 − ,429 keV )+π − . From the yield of this γ -ray, the branching ratio of the 7 Λ Li weak decay to 7 Be ∗ (429) was obtained to be (6.0 +1.3 −1.6 )×10 −2 . Compared with theoretically calculated values of the partial decay rates, the measurement indicates that the ground-state spin of 7 Λ Li is 1/2 but not 3/2.

Abstract

A hybrid-emulsion experiment has been carried out at KEK-PS to study S = −2 nuclei. With the analysis of about 35% of total emulsion, we have successfully found three events of sequential weak decay of a double-hypernucleus. The results of these E373 events are summarized together with those of past experiments. The first experimental study of the branching ratios of weak decay modes of double-hypernuclei has been performed.

Abstract

The BNL-AGS/E929 experiment was carried out to study energy levels of the Λ 13 C hypernucleus by a gamma-ray spectroscopy. Energy splitting of the spin-orbit doublets, 1 2 − and 3 2 − states, was estimated precisely. The excitation energy of the 1st 3 2 + state was also measured. We discuss the symmetric and the anti-symmetric spin-orbit interactions between a Λ particle and a nucleon from the measurement.

Abstract

The PHENIX Muon Arms detect muons at rapidities of | y |=(1.2–2.4) with full azimuthal acceptance. Each muon arm must track and identify muons and provide good rejection of pions and kaons (∼10 −3 ). In order to accomplish this we employ a radial field magnetic spectrometer with precision tracking (Muon Tracker) followed by a stack of absorber/low resolution tracking layers (Muon Identifier). The design, construction, testing and expected run parameters of both the muon tracker and the muon identifier are described.

Abstract

High resolution γ spectroscopy of hypernuclei using Hyperball has revealed detailed level structure of several p-shell Λ hypernuclei and allowed us to extract the strengths of ΛN spin-dependent interactions. In the experiment BNL E930, we observed E2(3/2+, 5/2+ → 1/2+) transitions in [Formula: see text] and confirmed a small size of the Λ-spin-dependent spin-orbit force. Recently we took data for [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] in order to investigate the strength of the ΛN tensor force. In a preliminary analysis, we observed γ rays of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text].

Abstract

Scintillating-fiber-block detectors have been constructed using 0.5 mm square fibers for the KEK-PS E373 experiment, which searches for double-strangeness nuclei. The main aim of the detector is to measure the energies of protons and pions produced from decay of double- or single-hypernuclei using their ranges. It is also used to detect Λ hyperons or the H -dibaryon, and to make event selection. The performance of the detectors was studied with low-energy proton and pion beams as well as minimum-ionizing particles. The energy resolution determined by the range measurements was 0.86 MeV for 37 MeV π − 's and 1.4 MeV for 47 MeV protons. The excellent capability of π/p separation has been also demonstrated.

Abstract

An active target with plastic scintillating fibers has been constructed. This active target serves as a production target of hyperons, as well as a scattering target, and works as a 4/spl pi/-detector for charged particles. This system is designed for measurements of hyperon-proton scattering for hyperon momenta of several hundred MeV/c. A spectrometer system for the incident beam and outgoing particles of the hyperon production reaction is linked with this target-detector in order to provide triggers for the imaging device of this detector system. As a control of this detector, the decay constant of the /spl Sigma//sup -/ hyperon has been evaluated.

An experiment to search for double-strangeness nuclei in nuclear emulsion is now being carried on as KEK-PS E373. Preliminary results of the data analysis for the K + spectrometer and the scintillating fiber detectors are presented. Status of the automatic track finding method for the emulsion is reported.

Abstract

We report on the first measurement of a hypernuclear $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-transition probability. $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays emitted in the $E2(5/{2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1/{2}^{+})$ transition of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ were detected by a large-acceptance germanium detector array (Hyperball), and the lifetime of the parent state ( $5/{2}^{+}$) was determined by the Doppler shift attenuation method. The obtained result, ${5.8}_{\ensuremath{-}0.7}^{+0.9}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7\mathrm{ps}$, was then converted into the reduced transition probability [ $B(E2)$] to be $B({E2;5/2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1/2}^{+})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}3.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.5}_{\ensuremath{-}0.4}^{+0.5}{e}^{2}{\mathrm{fm}}^{4}$. Compared with the $B(E2)$ of the corresponding $E2({3}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1}^{+})$ transition in the ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ nucleus, our result gives evidence that the size of the ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ core in ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ is smaller than the ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ nucleus in the free space.

Abstract

A hybrid emulsion experiment was carried out to study double-strangeness nuclei produced via Ξ− hyperon capture at rest with the expectation of ten times larger statistics than previous experiments. We have analyzed 5% of the total emulsion and found one “twin-hypernuclei” event involving the emission of two single-Λ hypernuclei and a nuclear fragment from a Ξ− hyperon stopping point. The event is interpreted as the decay of a Ξ − + 14 N atomic system to 5 Λ He + 5 Λ He + 4 He + neutron . The species of the Ξ−-atom and the fragmentation products are uniquely identified for the first time for twin-hypernuclei events. Combined with the results from a past hybrid-emulsion experiment, one double-Λ hypernucleus and three twin-hypernuclei events have been found from Ξ− captures on light emulsion nuclei. The ratio of the detected rate of double-Λ hypernuclei to that of twin-hypernuclei is compared with theoretical estimates.

Abstract

Using a large-acceptance germanium detector array (Hyperball), we have observed a spin-flip M1 gamma transition between the ground-state spin doublet of (7)(Lambda)Li (3/2(+)-->1/2(+)). The observed energy of 691.7+/-0.6(stat)+/-1.0(syst) keV provides crucial information on the strength of the spin-spin interaction between a Lambda and a nucleon. This is the first observation of well-identified hypernuclear gamma transitions using germanium detectors.

Abstract

A hybrid experiment with nuclear emulsion and scintillating-fiber detectors (KEK-E373) has been performed to search for double-strangeness systems. Among about 10${}^{3}$ events of ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ hyperons captured at rest by emulsion nuclei, we have observed four events which clearly show the topology of cascade weak decays of double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ hypernuclei including the ``Nagara'' event. Regarding the Nagara event, values of the two-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ binding energy (${B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$) and the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction energy ($\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$) of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{}{}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ have been revised to 6.91 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}$ 0.16 and 0.67 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}$ 0.17 MeV, respectively, due to the recent change of the ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ mass value (Particle Data Group). For another three events, we have determined possible species of double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ hypernuclei together with their binding energies.

Abstract

We searched for the H-dibaryon resonance in the ΛΛ invariant mass spectrum obtained by 12C(K −, K + ΛΛX) reactions using a scintillating fiber active target. We observed enhanced ΛΛ production near the threshold, as found in a previous KEK experiment, with improved statistics. Data were compared with the results of a cascade model calculation including ΛΛ final state interactions consistent with the recently measured binding energy of the double-Λ hypernucleus. No significant enhancements above the levels predicted by the model were observed. The upper limit for the production cross section of the H-dibaryon with a mass range between the ΛΛ and ΞN threshold is found to be 2.1 μb/sr at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract

The bound-state level structures of the {sub {lambda}}{sup 16}O and {sub {lambda}}{sup 15}N hypernuclei were studied by {gamma}-ray spectroscopy using a germanium detector array (Hyperball) via the {sup 16}O (K{sup -},{pi}{sup -}{gamma}) reaction. A level scheme for {sub {lambda}}{sup 16}O was determined from the observation of three {gamma}-ray transitions from the doublet of states (2{sup -},1{sup -}) at {approx}6.7 MeV to the ground-state doublet (1{sup -},0{sup -}). The {sub {lambda}}{sup 15}N hypernuclei were produced via proton emission from unbound states in {sub {lambda}}{sup 16}O. Three {gamma} rays were observed, and the lifetime of the 1/2{sup +};1 state in {sub {lambda}}{sup 15}N was measured by the Doppler shift attenuation method. By comparing the experimental results with shell-model calculations, the spin dependence of the {lambda}N interaction is discussed. In particular, the measured {sub {lambda}}{sup 16}O ground-state doublet spacing of 26.4{+-}1.6{+-}0.5 keV determines a small but nonzero strength of the {lambda}N tensor interaction.

Abstract

The beam commissioning of J-PARC LINAC has been started in November 2006. Beam position monitors (BPMs) which had been calibrated on the bench setup with a scanning wire, take beam-based-calibration method in order to enable the beam to pass at the centre of a quadrupole magnet (Q-magnet). In this presentation, the installed BPMs and their calibration methods are described.

Abstract

The H-dibaryon resonance was sought by a {lambda}{lambda} invariant mass spectrum that was obtained by the {sup 12}C (K{sup -},K{sup +}{lambda}{lambda}X) reactions. We observed a bump near the {lambda}{lambda} threshold, as reported by the previous experiment (KEK E224), with better statistics. Data were compared with results of a cascade model calculation including {lambda}{lambda} final state interactions consistent with the newly measured binding energy of {sub {lambda}}{sub {lambda}}{sup 6}He. No significant enhancements above levels of the model predictions were observed. The resulting upper limit for the production cross section of the H with a mass range between the {lambda}{lambda} and {xi}N threshold is found to be 2.1 {+-} 0.6 (stat.) {+-} 0.1 (syst.) {mu}b/sr at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Beam commissioning of J-PARC linac has been performed since November 2006. We have developed wire scanners in order to measure beam profile and perform transverse matching. Four wire scanners are installed at each matching section. We report the result of measurement of beam profile.

Abstract

A transverse matching scheme has been planned for the J-PARC linac beam commissioning with use of wire scanners. The beam diagnosis layout has been determined to realize the planned matching scheme. Continuous monitoring of the matching with beam position monitors is also discussed.

Abstract

In the J-PARC LINAC, there are mainly two requirements for calibration of beam position monitors (BPMs). One is that BPMs need to be calibrated with the accuracy of less than about a hundred micrometers to minimize beam loss for the world highest class of proton intensity. The other is that about a hundred of BPMs need to be calibrated and maintained consistently. To achieve these requirements, the calibration tools are being developed. During development, experiences on real beam in a MEBT line set for the DTL commissioning are utilized. The status of the development of calibration tools is described in this paper.

Abstract

In a \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray spectroscopy experiment with the $({K}^{\ensuremath{-}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ reaction on a $^{10}\mathrm{B}$ target, we have observed the $7/{2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5/{2}^{+}$ spin-flip $M1$ transition in ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{7}\text{Li}$ via \ensuremath{\gamma}-\ensuremath{\gamma} coincidence with the $5/{2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1/{2}^{+}E2$ transition. This is the first successful $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence measurement for hypernuclei. The measured $M1 \ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray energy is $470.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.9$(stat)$\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6$(syst) keV. The spacing of the $7/{2}^{+},5/{2}^{+}$ doublet is consistently explained using the strengths of the spin-spin, \ensuremath{\Lambda}-spin-orbit, and tensor interactions obtained from previous \ensuremath{\gamma}-spectroscopy experiments.

Abstract

An experiment to measure the Σ+p scattering cross sections was carried out at KEK 12 GeV proton synchrotron. A scintillating fiber active target system was used as a hydrogen target for the hyperon production and subsequent hyperon‐nucleon scattering. Out of 1.3 × 10 6 hyperon production events, 31 events were identified as Σ+p elastic scattering events in the momentum region of 350 ⩽ pΣ+ ⩽ 750 MeV/c. Differential cross sections in the angular region of −0.8 < cosθCM < 0.8 and integrated cross sections with respect to the incident momentum were obtained. They were compared with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract

We have observed two $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions in $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ from the 6.6 MeV excited ${1}_{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state to both ground-state spin-doublet members (${1}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}},{0}^{\ensuremath{-}}$) by the (${K}^{\ensuremath{-}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$) reaction. We have obtained the ground-state doublet spacing to be $26.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.6(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t})\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{k}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$ and the excitation energy of the ${1}_{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state to be $6561.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.1(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.7(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t})\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{k}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$. The ground-state doublet spacing provides a small but nonzero strength of the tensor interaction between a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ and a nucleon. This is the first experimental result on the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}N$ tensor interaction.

Abstract

We performed an experiment to measure γ rays of hyperfragments produced by stopped K − reactions on light ( A ⩽ 12 ) targets (KEK-PS E509). We clearly observed an E2 transition ( 5 / 2 + → 1 / 2 + ) in 7ΛLi with 10B, 11B and 12C targets and obtained the γ-ray intensity to be ( 7.5 ± 1.6 ) × 10 −4 per stopped K − for 10B target. In addition, a candidate for a new hypernuclear γ ray was observed. These results show that this method is quite suitable for the systematic study of hypernuclei.

Abstract

The PHENIX detector is designed to perform a broad study of A-A, p-A, and p-p collisions to investigate nuclear matter under extreme conditions. A wide variety of probes, sensitive to all timescales, are used to study systematic variations with species and energy as well as to measure the spin structure of the nucleon. Designing for the needs of the heavy-ion and polarized-proton programs has produced a detector with unparalleled capabilities. PHENIX measures electron and muon pairs, photons, and hadrons with excellent energy and momentum resolution. The detector consists of a large number of subsystems that are discussed in other papers in this volume. The overall design parameters of the detector are presented. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

With a germanium detector array (Hyperball), we observed two $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray peaks corresponding to the two transitions ( ${5/2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1/2}^{+}$ and ${3/2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1/2}^{+}$) in the ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ hypernucleus which was produced by the ${}^{9}\mathrm{Be}({K}^{\ensuremath{-}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ reaction. The energies of the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays are $3029\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1\mathrm{keV}$ and $3060\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1\mathrm{keV}$. The energy difference was measured to be ${31.4}_{\ensuremath{-}3.6}^{+2.5}\mathrm{keV}$, which indicates a very small $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-spin-dependent spin-orbit force between a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ and a nucleon. This is the smallest level splitting by far ever measured in a hypernucleus.

Abstract

With a germanium detector array (Hyperball), we observed two gamma-ray peaks corresponding to the two transitions (5/2(+)--1/2(+) and 3/2(+)--1/2(+)) in the (9)(Lambda)Be hypernucleus which was produced by the 9Be(K-,pi(-)) reaction. The energies of the gamma rays are 3029 +/- 2 +/- 1 keV and 3060 +/- 2 +/- 1 keV. The energy difference was measured to be 31.4(+2.5)(-3.6) keV, which indicates a very small Lambda-spin-dependent spin-orbit force between a Lambda and a nucleon. This is the smallest level splitting by far ever measured in a hypernucleus.

Abstract

A double-hyperfragment event has been found in a hybrid-emulsion experiment. It is identified uniquely as the sequential decay of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ emitted from a ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ hyperon nuclear capture at rest. The mass of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction energy $\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ have been measured for the first time devoid of the ambiguities due to the possibilities of excited states. The value of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ is $1.01\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.20}_{\ensuremath{-}0.11}^{+0.18}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$. This demonstrates that the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction is weakly attractive.

The technique was the observation of pions produced in sequential mesonic weak decay, each pion associated with one unit of strangeness change. The results indicate the production of a significant number of the double hypernucleus (4)(double Lambda)H and the twin hypernuclei (4)(Lambda)H and (3)(Lambda)H. The relevant decay chains are discussed and a simple model of the production mechanism is presented. An implication of this experiment is that the existence of an S = -2 dibaryon more than a few MeV below the double Lambda mass is unlikely.

Abstract

The mass of ( 6)(LambdaLambda)He and the Lambda-Lambda interaction energy DeltaB(LambdaLambda) have been measured for the first time devoid of the ambiguities due to the possibilities of excited states. The value of DeltaB(LambdaLambda) is 1.01+/-0.20(+0.18)(-0.11) MeV. This demonstrates that the Lambda-Lambda interaction is weakly attractive.

Abstract

A hybrid emulsion experiment E373 at KEK has been carried out to study doubly strange nuclear system. By the 8% data analysis of all, one twin single-Λ hypernuclei event and two events of double-Λ hypernucleus have been successfully detected. The twin single-Λ event is uniquely interpreted as Ⅺ−+14N→Λ5He+Λ5He+4He+n for the first time. In the first double-Λ hypernucleus event, “Demachi-Yanagi,” it is interpreted as Ⅺ−+12C→ΛΛ10Be* (or ΛΛ10Be*)+t. The second double-Λ hypernucleus event, “NAGARA,” shows a clearly recognized topology and the interpretation is unique as Ⅺ−+12C→ΛΛ6He+4He+t, ΛΛ6He→Λ5He+π−+p, Λ5He→p+d+2n etc. By the preliminary result of the ΛΛ6He, the attractive ΛΛ interaction has been confirmed with the ΔBΛΛ∼1 MeV.
