A tanulmány a negatív választó kérdésnek (NVK) nevezett konstrukció (pl. Esik az eső vagy nem?) használati feltételeivel foglalkozik a magyarban. Áttekintjük az NVK-k szemantikai értékének meghatározására vonatkozó szakirodalmi javaslatokat, valamint azokat az elméleteket (pl. van Rooy–Šafářová (2003), Biezma (2009)), amelyek az angolban az inverziót tartalmazó pozitív vagy negatív eldöntendő kérdések és az NVK-k közötti választás hátterét kívánják megadni egy adott szituációban. Azon kontextusok összehasonlítása nyomán, ahol az -e partikulás kérdő mondatok és az NVK-k megjelenhetnek a magyarban, azt állítjuk, hogy az utóbbi konstrukció akkor van engedélyezve, ha eleget tesz két, a diskurzusra vonatkozó feltétel legalább egyikének. Ezek közül az első diskurzuselőzményekkel, a második pedig a kontextusbeli evidenciákkal kapcsolatos.

On the interpretation of negative polar interrogatives in Hungarian *** The aim of the paper is the study of issues related to the interpretation of Hungarian negative polar interrogatives. After considering the basic syntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties of polar interrogatives with canonical and non-canonical structures, we argue that the distinction between „outside” and „inside” negation readings proposed by Ladd (1981) for English also exists in Hungarian and can be detected with the help of certain morphosyntactic tests. We show that polar interrogatives with a rise-fall intonation have both „outside” and „inside” negation readings, but interrogatives containing the particle -e only possess the former one. We call attention to certain further interpretational contrasts between the two types of structure and review some ways of giving the data a theoretically based explanation. *** A tanulmány a tagadószót tartalmazó magyar eldöntendő kérdő mondatok interpretációját vizsgálja. A kanonikus és nem kanonikus szerkezetű eldöntendő kérdő mondatok alapvető szintaktikai, szemantikai és pragmatikai tulajdonságainak áttekintése után amellett érvelünk, hogy a Ladd (1981) által az angolra javasolt megkülönböztetés az ún. „külső” és „belső” tagadás olvasatok között a magyarban is létezik, és jól kimutatható bizonyos morfoszintaktikai tesztek segítségével. Megmutatjuk, hogy az emelkedő-eső intonációjú kérdő mondatok mind a „külső”, mind a „belső” tagadás olvasattal rendelkeznek, de az -e partikulás kérdő mondatok csak az előbbivel. Felhívjuk a figyelmet a kétféle szerkezet közötti néhány további interpretációs kontrasztra is, és áttekintjük a jelenségek elméleti alapú magyarázatának lehetőségeit.

It is argued that the ban on propositional "inside" negation in Hungarian polar e‐interrogatives can be derived as a syntactic intervention effect. An Agree‐based formalization is sketched that crucially relies on a diachronically motivated negative formal feature on the interrogative particle ‐e. A putative counterexample is taken to be echoic.
