Abstract Gypsification is a common problem in weathered calcareous relics. In previous studies, the solutions of barium hydroxide in water and methanol were used as protectants for gypsification calcareous relics and showed significant differences in permeability. In this study, the underlying reasons for permeability differences between these two solutions were investigated using optical microscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry, X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the phenolphthalein test and physical property characterizations. The results indicated that the permeability differences were primarily caused by the solutions’ reactivity. Specifically, owing to the high reactivity of barium hydroxide in water, it reacted rapidly with atmospheric CO2 and gypsum (the weathering product) to generate barium carbonate, barium sulfate and calcium hydroxide precipitates. These precipitates hindered the penetration of solution into weathered relics. In contrast, barium hydroxide in methanol did not react with atmospheric CO2 or weathered relics, which also kept the solution in a liquid state during the infiltration process. Therefore, the solution of barium hydroxide in methanol exhibited high permeability. Based on the above findings, this study is meaningful for applying barium protectants in the conservation of gypsification calcareous relics.

The abandoned gypsum quarry at Dingwall, in Canada, is a unique place with a peculiar “living” landscape created by expansive hydration of anhydrite process actively operating in the weathering zone at the quarry bottom. It causes a rapid volume increase of the rocks and the formation of the unique domed and tepee-like hydration landforms (several meters in length and up to 2.09 m high) with internal hydration caves (swelling caves, German: Quellungshöhlen). The quarry also shows some rare evaporite minerals, sulphate karst, spheroidal weathering of anhydrite and the other phenomena. Several steps of geoconservation strategy are described to promote Dingwall quarry as a geosite and a geodiversity site: inventory, quantitative assessment, conservation, interpretation, promotion and monitoring. The performed inventory describes the elements of the geoheritage. The quantitative assessment of the site, made according to the method by Brilha (Geoheritage 8:119–134, 2016), was based on the four aspects: scientific value, potential educational use, potential tourist use and the rate of destruction. For showing the geological heritage, the plan of the site was prepared, with paths for visitors, attendant infrastructure, thematic interpretation panels and plates with QR codes. As a part of the promotion, application of the Internet with already operating sites (e.g. hydrationcave.com) is proposed. In turn, monitoring, with measurements of benchmarks and photographic and photogrammetric documentation, will ensure the proper functioning of the site after establishing it as a geosite and a geodiversity site. The conservation of surface gypsification stone relics using methanol solution of barium hydroxide as a novel treating agent was studied. In application, the methanol solution of barium hydroxide and water was introduced into the gypsum crust successively, and the gypsum crust was converted into protective barium sulfate and calcium carbonate layer. The conservation effect of barium hydroxide methanol solution was investigated by Raman spectroscopy (RS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), water solubility, color difference, capillary water absorption and surface hardness. The results indicated that the methanol solution of barium hydroxide could obtain a good permeability in gypsum crust. Hence, the desulfuration procedure in the traditional barium hydroxide method was not necessary anymore. After treatment by the methanol solution of barium hydroxide, the water solubility of the specimens was significantly decreased, and the surface hardness was significantly increased. In addition, the inherent physical properties of gypsum crust such as pore structure and original appearance were almost unaffected. Therefore, the methanol solution of barium hydroxide would be promising for the conservation of surface gypsification stone relics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Dingwall gypsum quarry in Nova Scotia, Canada, operating in 1933–1955, the bedrock anhydrite deposits of the Carboniferous Windsor Group have been uncovered from beneath the secondary gypsum beds of the extracted raw material. The anhydrite has been subjected to weathering undergoing hydration (gypsification), transforming into secondary gypsum due to contact with water of meteoric derivation. The ongoing gypsification is associated with a volume increase and deformation of the quarry bottom. The surface layer of the rocks is locally split from the substrate and raised, forming spectacular hydration relief. It shows numerous domes, ridges and tepee structures with empty internal chambers, some of which represent unique hydration caves (swelling caves, Quellungshöhlen). The petrographic structure of the weathering zone has been revealed by macro- and microscopic observations. It was recognized that gypsification commonly starts from a developing network of tiny fractures penetrating massive anhydrite. The gypsification advances from the fractures towards the interior of the anhydrite rocks, which are subdivided into blocks or nodules similar to corestones. Characteristic zones can be recognized at the contact of the anhydrite and the secondary gypsum: (1) massive and/or microporous anhydrite, (2) anhydrite penetrated by tiny gypsum veinlets separating the disturbed crystals and their fragments (commonly along cleavage planes), (3) gypsum with scattered anhydrite relics, and (4) secondary gypsum. The secondary gypsum crystals grow both by replacement and displacement, and also as cement. Displacive growth, evidenced by abundant deformation of the fragmented anhydrite crystals, is the direct cause of the volume increase. Crystallization pressure exerted by gypsum growth is thought to be the main factor generating volume increase and, consequently, also the formation of new fractures allowing water access to “fresh” massive anhydrite and thus accelerating its further hydration. The expansive hydration is taking place within temperature range from 0 to ~30 °C in which the solubility of gypsum is lower than that of anhydrite. In such conditions, dissolving anhydrite yields a solution supersaturated with gypsum and the dissolution of anhydrite is simultaneous with in situ replacive gypsum crystallization. Accompanying displacive growth leads to volume increase in the poorly confined environment of the weathering zone that is susceptible to upward expansion.

Hydration of anhydrite to gypsum (gypsification of anhydrite) in the weathering zone sometimes causes a volume increase. This can lead to local detachments of the surface layer of the weathering anhydrite rocks and creation of the hydration cavities and rare hydration caves (or swelling caves; German: Quellungshöhlen) inside domes formed by the uplifted layer. Currently growing hydration cavities at the anhydrite bottom of the abandoned quarry at Dingwall, Canada, were studied with the use of photogrammetric, statistic, and petrographic methods. Seventy seven cavities were documented including 48 caves (cavities with the height ≥0.30 m large enough to accommodate an adult man). Forty three caves had proper entrances (inlets large enough for an adult to get inside). The cavities contain one flat domed or, less often, tepee-like chamber generally similar in shape to the host hydration landform. The majority of cavities showed the length <4.6 m, the width <3.0 m, and the height <0.85 m. Only 3 caves had the length >8.00 m and the height ≥0.80 m. The largest and the highest cave showed the sizes 10.7 × 6.6 × 1.1 m measured in 2008 which changed into 8.87 × 2.97 × 1.35 m in 2019. The other caves and cavities exhibit also morphological changes with time due to vertical and horizontal movements of rocks slabs and collapse of the roofs depending mainly on the location of expansive gypsification and its intensity. Precipitation (rain- and meltwater) accumulating at the foot of the initial uplift intensifies the hydration in this zone causing a centripetal pressure towards the landform and contributing to its further rising and enlargement of the cavity height. The basic condition required for hydration cave formation is temperature between 0 and 30 °C in which the solubility of gypsum is much lower than that of anhydrite. The meteoric water solution infiltrating in the vadose zone is dissolving the anhydrite and gradually reaches Ca sulphate concentration higher than the level of gypsum and lower than the level of anhydrite solubility. Then, the dissolving anhydrite yields a solution supersaturated with gypsum, capable of its precipitation, and the dissolution of anhydrite is simultaneous with in situ replacive/displacive gypsum crystallization. The crystallization pressure of gypsum is a direct cause of the rock deformations and creation of hydration caves. The knowledge of the soil variability is essential for its hydrologic characterization, for irrigation management and planning and especially for water movement modeling. Nevertheless, the scarcity of soil information in Spain precludes its use in irrigation management and, particularly, in the on-going irrigation modernization process. The Violada Irrigation District (VID) comprises 5234 ha and is located in a semi-arid gypsum-rich region in northeast Spain. VID has been under flood irrigation since the mid-20th Century and has been modernized recently to sprinkler irrigation. Since the early 1980s water balances in VID have been based on average soil properties and bulk irrigation data. The current irrigation system provides detailed irrigation data at plot level, thus allowing for performing distributed balances (in hydrologic homogenous zones) that require detailed or semi-detailed soil information in the form of a soil map. The objective of this two-part study is to define homogeneous zones in relation to hydrological properties relevant for irrigation management, first defining the soil variability within the VID and then analyzing the soils hydrologic and salinity features (in a companion paper). The specific objectives of this paper were (i) to draw the VID semi-detailed soil map; (ii) to explain the variability of soil properties; and (iii) to map the main soil characteristics related to irrigation management. Thirty four soil pits, located on all the different geomorphological areas, were opened and described. Samples were taken from all the horizons and analyzed for chemical and physical properties. The limits of soil units were drawn with the aid of 32 additional auger holes, the data from 72 pits opened during the irrigation transformation works, and all the previous soil information available. Finally the soils were classified down to family level. The main soil formation processes in VID were carbonation and gypsification. Thirteen soil units were defined, included in five soil subgroups and six particle size families. “Fine” particle sizes were dominant along the gypsum-rich valley bottoms. Coarser textures were found on the heights and showed higher CaCO 3 equivalent content and no presence of gypsum accumulations. A priori, the main limitation for irrigation in the valley soils was the limited drainage (due to fine textures and reduced slope) while in the highland soils it might be constrained by their low retention capacity. The high gypsum and carbonate content of the VID soils may prevent the development of infiltration problems. The pathologies formed in slate roofs are mainly due to the presence of potentially unstable minerals (iron sulfides, carbonates and organic matter). These minerals may become altered by the effect of environmental agents, once the slate roof is finished. The pathologies are mainly associated with oxidation and gypsification processes of the cited mineral phases. In this work, the potential pathologies of several Spanish roofing slates are identified, using the tests defined in the European Norms EN 12326:2005, 14147:2004 and 11597:2007.
