Intermediate-depth earthquakes (>40 km) have been observed beneath the central Himalayas over decades, with little known about their nature and characteristics. Here, we apply a state-of-the-art systematic processing routine, starting from continuous waveform data, to obtain the most comprehensive high-quality earthquake catalog with a focus on the intermediate-depth seismicity beneath the central Himalayas. We construct a catalog containing 414 robust earthquake locations with depths ranging from 40 to 110 km spanning from late 2001 till mid-2003. We calculate earthquake magnitudes in a consistent way and obtain values ranging between ML 0.8 and 4.5 with a magnitude of completeness of Mc 2.4. This information allows us to study the spatiotemporal characteristics of the seismicity in great detail. Earthquakes mainly take place in a cluster, consisting of two linear segments at ca. 35° azimuth difference, situated beneath the high Himalayas in NE Nepal and adjacent S. Tibet. Seismicity there does not feature any mainshock-aftershock patterns but presents a few sequences with potential seismicity migration rates compatible with linear or diffusive migration. This result, along with previous studies in the lower Indian crust, allows interpreting these events as related to metamorphic reactions involving dehydration processes. However, given the geodynamic context, a tectonic interpretation with a dextral basement fault zone propagating beneath the Himalaya and continuing as a westward propagating tear fault would also be possible. This represents a continuous fault zone from the deep crust in S. Tibet, across the Himalaya along the Dhubri-Chungthang fault zone (DCFZ) to the Shillong plateau, which could be an inherited tectonic feature.

The 1714 Bhutan earthquake was one of the largest in the Himalaya in the last millennium. We show that the surface rupture caused by this earthquake extended further to the east than previously known, it was at least 175 km long, with slip exceeding 11 m at our study site. The age of the surface rupture was constrained by a combination of radiocarbon and traditional optically stimulated luminescence dating of affected river sediments. Computations using empirical scaling relationships, fitting historical observations and paleoseismic data, yielded a plausible magnitude of Mw 8.1 ± 0.4 and placed the hypocentre of the 1714 Bhutan earthquake on the flat segment of the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT), the basal décollement of the Himalayan orogen. Calculations of Coulomb stress transfer indicate that great earthquakes along the leading part of the MHT would cause surface rupture. In contrast, distal earthquakes may not immediately trigger surface rupture, although they would increase the stresses in the leading part of the MHT, facilitating future surface-rupturing earthquakes. Frontal earthquakes would also transfer stress into the modern foreland basin facilitating southward propagation of the MHT as a blind basal décollement. In conclusion, studies of surface-rupturing events alone likely underestimate the seismic slip along the Himalayan megathrust.

In Nepal, after every large earthquake, local people appear to be motivated to get better prepared for future earthquakes. However, their motivation vanishes before effective preparation, mainly due to the lack of earthquake education in their community. Promoting up-to-date scientific knowledge to a society living under high earthquake hazard is important and contributes to reduce the related risk. The dissemination of information in Nepal lags far behind modern seismological knowledge, and part of the local population still believes in religious explanations and stories about earthquakes. We run an educational program in Nepal to make people better aware of earthquakes and to improve their preparedness through obligatory school education, but the dichotomy between scientific and religious visions of earthquakes remains a challenge. For more efficient acceptance of earthquake preparatory advices, it is important to better perceive the religious narration of earthquakes and to include these in the educational communications. Thereby, we reviewed the main sources of Hindu literature and gathered relevant and interesting explanations on earthquake evidences and causes. The primary religious interpretations of earthquakes in different Hindu texts are related to the Gods and their actions, and some sources also include physical descriptions of earthquakes related situations or processes. We found that most of the stories, causes and explanations of earthquake do not match with the concepts of modern science, yet there are exceptions such as a historically old advice to leave buildings during the shaking. The collected findings are important not only from a religious literature review perspective, but also and mainly to develop an inclusive and more efficient strategy to communicate about earthquake related topics in the classroom as well as with the public in Nepal.

We present results from a joint inversion of new seismic and recently compiled gravity data to constrain the structure of a prominent geophysical anomaly in the European Alps: the Ivrea Geophysical Body (IGB). We investigate the IGB structure along the West-East oriented Val Sesia profile at higher resolution than previous studies. We deployed 10 broadband seismic stations at 5 km spacing for 27 months, producing a new database of ∼1000 high-quality seismic receiver functions (RFs). The compiled gravity data yields 1 gravity point every 1–2 km along the profile. We set up an inversion scheme, in which RFs and gravity anomalies jointly constrain the shape and the physical properties of the IGB. We model the IGB’s top surface as a single density and shear-wave velocity discontinuity, whose geometry is defined by four, spatially variable nodes between far-field constraints. An iterative algorithm was implemented to efficiently explore the model space, directing the search toward better fitting areas. For each new candidate model, we use the velocity-model structures for both ray-tracing and observed-RFs migration, and for computation and migration of synthetic RFs: the two migrated images are then compared via cross-correlation. Similarly, forward gravity modeling for a 2D density distribution is implemented. The joint inversion performance is the product of the seismic and gravity misfits. The inversion results show the IGB protruding at shallow depths with a horizontal width of ∼30 km in the western part of the profile. Its shallowest segment reaches either 3–7 or 1–3 km depth below sea-level. The latter location fits better the outcropping lower crustal rocks at the western edge of the Ivrea-Verbano Zone. A prominent, steep eastward-deepening feature near the middle of the profile, coincident with the Pogallo Fault Zone, is interpreted as inherited crustal thickness variation. The found density and velocity contrasts of the IGB agree with physical properties of the main rock units observed in the field. Finally, by frequency-dependent analysis of RFs, we constrain the sharpness of the shallowest portion of the IGB velocity discontinuity as a vertical gradient of thickness between 0.8 km and 0.4 km.

We use a novel technique named global-phase seismic interferometry (GloPSI) to image the lithospheric structure, and in particular the Moho, below two parallel north-south transects belonging to the GANSSER network (2013–2014). The profiles cross the Himalayan orogenic wedge in Bhutan, a tectonically important area within the largest continent-continent collision zone on Earth that is still undergoing crustal thickening and represents a challenging imaging target for the GloPSI approach. GloPSI makes use of direct waves from distant earthquakes and receiver-side reverberations with near vertical incidence. Reflections are isolated from earthquake recordings by solving a correlation integral and are turned into a reflectivity image of the lithosphere below the arrays. Our results compare favorably with first-order features observed from a previous receiver function (RF) study. We show that a combined interpretation of GloPSI and RF results allows for a more in-depth understanding of the lithospheric structure across the orogenic wedge in Bhutan.

In recent decades, research on mountains has become more inter- and transdisciplinary, but a greater effort is needed if such research is to contribute to a societal transformation toward sustainability. Mountain research centers are a crucial actor in this endeavor. Yet, the literature has not paid sufficient attention to how these centers should (re-)design inter- and transdisciplinary research. In this study, we explored this question with a self-reflexive approach. We analyzed the first 15 months of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mountain Research (CIRM) of the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) through qualitative data collected via interviews and observation. We used a simple model of inter- and transdisciplinarity at the organizational level of a research center. Special attention was devoted to the individual and collective ability to exploit the unexpected (serendipity). Our results indicate an interdependency between the coconstruction of research objects and the creation of integrative partnerships. They also shed light on the types of institutional resources and integrative methodologies that enhance inter- and transdisciplinary research, as well as their challenges. Our experience shows that implementing inter- and transdisciplinarity requires deep changes in research evaluation procedures, research funding policies, and researchers themselves. Serendipity is in turn shown to play an important role in inter- and transdisciplinarity due to its potential to change the research process in creative ways. We speculate that serendipity offers unique opportunities to capitalize on hidden resources that can catalyze a radical transformation of mountain researchers, research organizations, and society in the face of unprecedented global change.

The presence of discontinuities (e.g. faults, fractures, veins, layering) in crystalline rocks can be challenging for seismic interpretations because the wide range of their size, orientation, and intensity, which controls the mechanical properties of the rock and elastic wave propagation, resulting in equally varying seismic responses at different scales. The geometrical characterisation of adjacent outcrop discontinuity networks allows a better understanding of the nature of the subsurface rocks and aids seismic interpretation. In this study, we characterise the discontinuity network of the Balmuccia peridotite (BP) in the Ivrea–Verbano Zone (IVZ), northwestern Italy. This geological body is the focus of the Drilling the Ivrea–Verbano zonE (DIVE), an international continental scientific drilling project, and two active seismic surveys, SEismic imaging of the Ivrea ZonE (SEIZE) and high-resolution SEIZE (Hi-SEIZE), which aim to resolve the subsurface structure of the DIVE drilling target through high-resolution seismic imaging. For fracture characterisation, we developed two drone-based digital outcrop models (DOMs) at two different resolutions (10−3–10 m and 10−1–103 m), which allowed us to quantitatively characterise the orientation, size, and intensity of the main rock discontinuities. These properties affect the seismic velocity and consequently the interpretation of the seismic data. We found that (i) the outcropping BP discontinuity network is represented by three more sets of fractures with respect to those reported in the literature; (ii) the discontinuity sizes follow a power-law distribution, indicating similarity across scales, and (iii) discontinuity intensity is not uniformly distributed along the outcrop. Our results help to explain the seismic behaviour of the BP detected by the SEIZE survey, suggesting that the low P-wave velocities observed can be related to the discontinuity network, and provide the basic topological parameters (orientation, density, distribution, and aperture) of the fracture network unique to the BP. These, in turn, can be used for interpretation of the Hi-SEIZE seismic survey and forward modelling of the seismic response.

Abstract Seismic monitoring matters both for research and for populations living in areas of seismic hazard; however, it comes with a cost that is not fully affordable for developing countries. Compared to classical approaches with very quiet sites and high-quality instrumentation, it is therefore worth investigating low-cost seismic networks and how well they perform at detecting and characterizing seismicity. We analyze 1 year of seismic data from an educational seismology network in Nepal, create our own earthquake catalog, and compare it to the publicly available national observatory catalog. We find that despite the noisier seismic station sites, the overall results are comparable and all the main features relevant for seismicity are found. We present quantitative analyses of locations, magnitudes and their frequency distribution in our catalog, as well as differences with the observatory catalog. Differences between the two catalogs primarily stem from the respective network geometries and their coverage, as well as daytime noise level differences. We conclude that if properly planned and installed, low-cost seismic networks are a viable, feasible and significant complement to monitor seismic activity. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Anomalously overturned thrust faults, lineaments and segmentation causing cross‐cutting basement structures characterize the tectonic setting of Sikkim Himalaya. However, its seismotectonics is poorly constrained along with the speculated northward extension of the Dhubri‐Chungthang Fault Zone (DCFZ) causing segmentation. Here, we utilize the precise location of newly acquired local earthquake data and fault plane solutions using full‐waveform moment tensor inversion to better constrain seismically active zones. Transtensional shearing along the Main Himalayan Thrust in central Sikkim is possibly incited by fluid‐rich upper‐crust. Cessation of the mapped 20 km wide mid‐crustal seismogenic zone of DCFZ at Chungthang and its northward discontinuation into the Higher Himalayas is confirmed by the striking variation in focal mechanisms. Earthquakes along imbricated segments in the lower‐crust originate possibly in response to crustal shortening. Extensional shearing along the Moho triggers seismicity to the northwest of Sikkim. Such complex tectonic dynamics instigating persistent seismicity indicates high potential for future great earthquakes in Sikkim Himalaya.

Abstract The Balmuccia peridotite exposes relatively fresh mantle rocks at the Earth’s surface, and as such it is of interest for geologists and geophysicists. The outcrop is a kilometre-scale feature, yet its extent at depth is insufficiently imaged. Our aim is to provide new constraints on the shape of the density anomaly this body represents, through 3D gravity modelling. In an effort to avoid personal or methodology bias, we hereby launch an invitation and call for participative modelling. We openly provide all the necessary input data: pre-processed gravity data, geological map, in situ rock densities, and digital elevation model. The expected inversion results will be compared and jointly analysed with all participants. This approach should allow us to conclude on the shape of the Balmuccia peridotite body and the associated uncertainty. This crowd effort will contribute to the site surveys preparing a scientific borehole in the area in frame of project DIVE.

Earthquakes in Nepal are among the most damaging natural hazards, claiming many lives and causing more widespread destruction than any other natural hazard. Yet, due to other difficulties and challenges, earthquakes are at the forefront of people’s attention only after major events, such as the 1934 or 2015 earthquakes. As a result, current preparedness of the population to earthquakes is far below the optimal level. This calls for an immediate and widespread educational effort to increase awareness and to raise the current young generation responsibly. After describing the current status of earthquake education at various school levels in Nepal, we here propose a series of actions to undertake towards an official education policy, starting from full openness and use of languages, via coordination and teacher's training, to the content, frequency and style of curriculum. We conclude on a timeline of actions, which have various lengths but should start today. We hope that by sharing our researcher and educational experience and thoughts, the actual preparation of the earthquake education policy for Nepal will start being developed under a dedicated team. Elements of the proposal presented here can be used and adapted to other regions at risk around the world.

Pinched between the Eastern Himalaya and the Indo-Burman ranges, the Shillong Plateau represents a zone of distributed deformation with numerous visible and buried active faults. In 1897, a great (magnitude 8+) earthquake occurred in the area, and although a subsurface rupture plane has been proposed geodetically, its epicenter remained uncertain. We gathered original arrival time data of seismic waves from this early-instrumental era and combined them with modern, 3D velocity models to constrain the origin time and epicenter of this event, including uncertainties. Our results show that the earthquake has taken place in the northwest part of the plateau, at the junction of the short, surface-rupturing Chedrang fault and the buried Oldham fault (26.0°N, 90.7°E). This latter fault has been proposed earlier based on geodetic data and is long enough to host a great earthquake. Rupture has most likely propagated eastward. Stress change from the 1897 earthquake may have ultimately triggered the 1930 M 7.1 Dhubri earthquake, along a fault connecting the Shillong Plateau with the Himalaya.

Abstract Historical archives refer to often recurring earthquakes along the Eastern Himalaya for which geological evidence is lacking, raising the question of whether these events ruptured the surface or remained blind, and how do they contribute to the seismic budget of the region, which is home to millions of inhabitants. We report a first mega trench excavation at Himebasti village, Arunachal Pradesh, India, and analyze it with modern geological techniques. The study includes twenty-one radiocarbon dates to limit the timing of displacement after 1445 CE, suggesting that the area was devastated in the 1697 CE event, known as Sadiya Earthquake, with a dip-slip displacement of 15.3 ± 4.6 m. Intensity prediction equations and scaling laws for earthquake rupture size allow us to constraints a magnitude of Mw 7.7–8.1 and a minimum rupture length of ~ 100 km for the 1697 CE earthquake.

Abstract One of the few near‐complete continental crustal sections exposed on Earth's surface is the Ivrea‐Verbano Zone (Western Alps, Italy), which is considered as a petro‐geophysical reference of the continental lithosphere. Exposed peridotite slivers embedded in lower crustal rocks at the surface and large density, seismic velocity anomalies of the Ivrea Geophysical Body in the subsurface suggest that mantle‐like rocks are located as shallow as a few kilometers depth, but the actual composition of the rocks producing these anomalies is unknown. Here we investigate how the published seismological and new gravimetric data in the location of Valsesia could be reconciled with petrologic data and models of the Ivrea‐Verbano Zone. We use the Perple_X software to calculate densities and compressional wave velocities for a range of possible deep crustal rock types. We argue that amphibole gabbros (18 km depth) provide the best fit to the joint geophysical and petrologic constraints, whereas residual ultramafic rocks and anhydrous gabbros are inconsistent with the existing data. This indicates that the Ivrea Geophysical Body beneath the Valsesia area in the Ivrea‐Verbano Zone preserves the structure of an igneous complex formed during magmatic underplating from the crystallization of hydrous mafic magmas. This would imply melting of a damp mantle source that produced a continental crust of an original thickness of up to ∼48 km in the Permian, of which ∼30 km are exposed at Earth's surface today.

Nepal, located above the convergent India-Eurasia plate boundary, has repeatedly experienced devastating earthquakes. During the 2015 magnitude 7.8 Gorkha earthquake, an often-reported experience was that people were not aware of the threatening seismic hazard and had an insufficient level of preparedness. An important source of the problem is that earthquake-related topics are not part of the school curriculum. Earthquake education reaching a broad group of the population early in their lives is therefore strongly needed. We established an initiative in Nepal to introduce seismology in schools, with a focus on education and citizen seismology. We have prepared educational materials adapted to the Nepali school system, which we distributed and also share on our program’s website: http://seismoschoolnp.org. In selected schools, we also installed a low-cost seismometer to record seismicity and to allow learning-by-doing classroom activities. Our approach was very well received and we hope it will help make earthquake-safe communities across Nepal. The seismic sensor which we installed in schools is a Raspberry Shake 1D (RS1D), this was selected based on its performance in laboratory tests and suitability for the field conditions. At a test site in Switzerland we were able to record magnitude 1.0 events up to 50 km distance with a RS1D. In Nepal, 22 such seismometers installed in schools create the Nepal School Seismology Network providing online data openly. The seismometer in each school allows students to be informed of earthquakes, visualize the respective waveforms, and estimate the distance and magnitude of the event. For significant local and regional events, we provide record sections and network instrumental intensity maps on our program’s website. In 6 months of network operation, more than 194 local and teleseismic earthquakes of M ≥ 4 have been recorded. From a local and a global catalog, complemented with our own visual identifications, we have provided an earthquake wave detectability graph in distance and magnitude domain. Based on our observations, we have calibrated a new magnitude equation for Nepal, related to the epicentral distance D [km] and to the observed peak vertical ground velocity PGVV [μm/s]. The calibration is done to best fit local catalog magnitudes, and yields the following equation: M = 1.05 × log10(PGVV) + 1.08 × log10(D) + 0.75.
