In the nature, larvae living in watercourses are exposed to a complex system of environmental influences. It is known that different watercourse types (creeks, brooks, streams, little rivers and medial rivers) provide different conditions for larval development (water depth, flow rate, temperature, oxygen content, substrate type, nutrient supply, etc.). These conditions can vary significantly between watercourse types, but be very similar within types. In this work, we examined the body sizes and wing morphometric characteristics of males of Calopteryx splendens reared from different watercourse types (brook, stream, creek, little river, medial river). Although there were no significant differences in body size among watercourse types, we found significant differences in the wing features. We found the most differences between the individuals reared from streams and creeks and between the individuals reared from stream and medial river. Our results show that the individuals reared from different watercourse types were clearly separated on the two wings. The results also suggest that there are significant differences in the number and pattern of allometric features on the wings of individuals reared from different watercourse types.

One of the main threats of our time is the increasing water demand not only globally, but also locally. These are often met at the expense of ecological water demand, jeopardizing the structural and operational conditions necessary to maintain good ecological status in aquatic and wetland habitats. This is why it is of great importance to explore possible water retention options. In 2019, based on the long-term data series on the water level of River Tisza, we studied the frequency and extent of flooding in the floodplain between Tiszabercel and Gávavencsellő, where there are valuable wetlands, including a ‘sanctuary’-type backwater. This was necessary because recently the floodplains have undergone negative changes. Their water volume has gradually decreased, their valuable wildlife has become rarer, some of them have completely dried out in the autumn and even one of them has burned out. From the analysis of the examined 48-years data, it could be concluded that flooding was relatively frequent in the sampled area, but the extent of water coverage had no significant effect either in space or time. It was also found that only water levels above 700 cm (based on the water meter of Tiszabercel, 98.36 mBf) could adequately ensure that the water bodies are filled up and flushed out. However, there is little chance of this, because of four reasons: (1) water levels of this height are becoming rare; (2) the duration and height of high water levels are mostly short in time; (3) water levels of several water bodies are artificially decreased; (4) the drainage effect of the River Tisza – which has been significantly incised after the river regulation – prevails in the area. Due to all, in the future, there would be a great need to maintain the water levels in the floodplain wetlands as efficiently as possible after the floods – for which we have made specific proposals for the places and methods to preserve the ecologically necessary amount of water.

EnglishThe spatial and temporal patterns of phytoplankton in relation to physical and chemical properties were studied in a drinking water reservoir - the Lazberc Reservoir - located in north-east Hungary. The main objectives were to determine the role of the hydrologic regime in structuring algal growth and the effects of physical and chemical variables on the coexistence of a dominant species: cyanobacteria, Microcystis aeruginosa (Kutzing) Kutzing and an eukaryotic dinoflagellates, Ceratium hirundinella (O.F. Muller) Dujardin. The results suggest that nutrients (TP, NH4–N and NO3–N), turbidity, and the hydrologic regime play an important role in regulating the occurrence of investigated species. The rainy summer period resulting in a mixing of the water column, and the low level of nitrogen coupled with the internal release of phosphorus from the lake sediment under brief periods of anoxia promote cyanobacterial bloom. During this period, the water column was characterised by high turbidity, which created favourable conditions for developing a huge C. hirundinella biomass and the simultaneous occurrence of M. aeruginosa. This study also demonstrated - that contrary to what was previously known, deep standing waters in the temperate zone are not only dimictic (mixing twice a year during the spring and the fall), but they can also be mixed during the summer period due to continued rainfall, which equalizes the temperature in the whole water column. O periodo de verao chuvoso que resulta um equilibrio do nivel da agua, o baixo nivel de nitrogenio, juntamente com a liberacao interna de fosforo do sedimento, durante um curto periodo anoxico promove a floracao de cianobacterias. Durante este periodo, a coluna de agua foi caracterizada por alta turbidez, criando condicoes favoraveis para o surgimento de uma enorme expansao da biomassa C. hirundinella e a aparicao simultânea de M. aeruginosa. In our work, we sought to answer whether we find differences among the various zones of an oxbow lake with different land uses based on physico-chemical variables and dominant algal plankton species. The two ends of the oxbow lake are bordered by settlements, and near them there are open water areas where fishing is the major utilization form. Between the two open water areas we find a protected area with a large aquatic plant coverage and two transition zones towards the open water areas. The oxbow lake receives periodic water replenishment only at one end from one of the open water areas. During summer—due to the lack of rain—the water of the oxbow lake is used for irrigation in the surrounding arable land, so the water level fluctuation can be significant in the riverbed. Our study was performed within a vegetation period of spring, early summer, mid-summer, and fall. In connection with the ecological classification of a smaller water body, studies on the physical and chemical properties of the water and the composition of the algal plankton are usually carried out in few places and relatively infrequently. The characteristics of a water body are also influenced by seasonal changes, which can be the changes in the extent of vegetation coverage, the way land is used and the possibility of water replenishment, to which the algal community usually responds with changes. Based on our study, it can be said that even in a relatively small water body, we found a large differences based on the chemical and physical properties of the water and the characteristic algal species. Open water zones, areas with large macrovegetation coverage, and the transition zones were separated from each other.

While selection is a key mechanism of evolution, our understanding of within-season variation in sexual selection remains limited. Here, we studied within-season sexual selection on two key performance traits, flight speed and flight endurance, and a set of morphological and physiological phenotypic traits in a natural population of the territorial damselfly Chalcolestes viridis. We applied a path analysis approach to address whether the flight-related traits affected mating success directly or indirectly through their effect on the flight performance traits, and whether these selection patterns differed between the first and second half of the reproductive season. While some trait means did not differ between both parts of the season (flight speed, wing loading and non-allometric wing shape), most traits showed within-season differences (flight endurance, fat content, flight muscle ratio, wing centroid size, body mass and the allometric wing shape). Despite the within-season temporal differences in flight endurance, sexual selection consistently favoured males with a higher flight endurance. None of the detected patterns of sexual selection on the flight-related traits were consistently significant in both periods: while we detected selection on wing loading and wing centroid size in the first half of the season, we detected selection on body mass in the second half of the season. More studies focusing on understudied traits such as performance traits are needed to refine our knowledge of the temporal dynamics of selection patterns in nature. This is important to arrive at a better understanding of the adaptive evolutionary dynamics of traits in natural populations.

During our work, we investigated the physical and chemical variables of a small surface watercourse to investigate how different anthropogenic effects affect its water quality. Along this small watercourse, there are well-separated areas that are affected by various anthropogenic effects. In addition to its origin and branches, in many places it is surrounded by agricultural land with insufficient buffer zones, which burdens the small watercourse with nitrogen and phosphorus forms. In the lower stages, artificial damming inhibits the natural flow of the T&oacute, c&oacute, Canal, thereby creating eutrophicated stagnant water areas. This is further strengthened by, in many cases, illegal communal and used water intake that further burdens the small watercourse. Considering the experience of our investigation, it can be stated that the examined small watercourse could barely suffer human impacts, and it could be described with great heterogeneity using physical and chemical variables. We experienced that this heterogeneity caused by anthropogenic effects appeared in all hydrologic states and seasons. Furthermore, our research showed that these small watercourses had such high heterogeneity that their monitoring and examination should be taken just as seriously as when it comes to larger watercourses.

Habitat loss and fragmentation causes decline of insect populations. Odonata (both dragonflies and damselflies) are especially threatened, because they are notably influenced by both aquatic and terrestrial environment. We explored the relative importance of local and landscape variables for Odonata assemblages (species richness, assemblage composition, population abundance) revealing differences in the sensitivity of Zygoptera and Anisoptera on the selected variables. Our study took two years and was placed along 11 lowland watercourses. We sampled the specimens using 500 m long transects from May to September. Landscape variables (length of watercourses, forest patch proportion, and farmland patch size) were calculated at three scales to better account for fragmentation. Our findings show that local variables influence damselflies, but dragonflies are more sensitive to landscape variables. Damselfly’s diversity decreased with the increasing macrovegetation cover, while dragonfly’s diversity decreased with the increasing degree of land use intensification, but increased with the length of watercourses. Our findings, both on local and landscape scales demonstrated the importance of terrestrial environment on Odonata. Based on our findings we stress the importance of partial watercourse clearing, and maintenance of traditional farm management based on small parcel farming near watercourses to maintain diverse and healthy Odonata assemblages.

The specimens were sampled using 500 m long transects from May to September. Results, both on local and landscape scales emphasized the importance of terrestrial environment on Odonata. Local variables influence damselflies, while dragonflies are more sensitive to landscape variables. Damselfly’s diversity decreased with increasing macrovegetation cover, while dragonfly’s diversity decreased with the increasing degree of land use intensification, but increased with the length of watercourses. We studied dragonfly assemblages in the Ukrainian section of the River Tisza, which still shows several natural (unregulated) properties. In 2010 and 2011 larvae and exuviae were collected in the vicinity of the villages Vilok (Вилок, Tiszaujlak), Nove Szelo (Нове Cело, Tiszaujhely), Tiszobikeny (Тисабикень, Tiszabokeny) and of the towns Vinohragyiv (Виноградiв, Nagyszőlős) and Huszt (Хуст, Huszt). We collected our samples from 8 sites in the main channel, 2 sites in side channels and 3 sites in two dead channels. We collected 255 larvae and 1587 exuviae, from which 8 species of dragonflies were identified [Gomphus vulgatissimus (Linnaeus, 1758), Stylurus flavipes (Charpentier, 1825), Onychogomphus forcipatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Ophiogomphus cecilia (Fourcroy, 1785), Somatochlora metallica (van der Linden, 1825), Calopteryx splendens (Harris, 1782), Platycnemis pennipes (Pallas, 1771), and Sympecma fusca (van der Linden, 1820)]. We compared the species composition of dragonflies in the three habitats. In the case of larvae in the main channel G. vulgatissimus (48.0%), C. splendens (29.6%) and O. forcipatus (20.8%) dominated, while in the dead channels C. splendens (49.5%) and P. pennipes (23.7%) were found most frequently. In the side channels G. vulgatissimus, O. forcipatus and C. splendens were the most frequent species. S. flavipes appeared only in the main and side channels, while S. metallica and S. fusca were only detected in the dead channels.

Although the sex ratio of Odonata at emergence has received much attention, we are still far from understanding the exact causes of its variability and imbalance. In this paper we studied the sex ratios at emergence in natural populations of two Gomphus species based on samples of exuviae taken from two European lowland rivers. We hypothesized a possible relationship between the water temperature during larval development and the sex ratio at emergence. Sex ratio records exhibited no consistent bias towards one sex but varied between habitats and years in both species. We found correlations between sex ratio and water temperature in the year preceding emergence. Furthermore, the correlation between sex ratios and water temperature was in opposite directions in the two congeneric species, which may be attributed to differences in their voltinisms. Research into landscape history makes it possible to follow landscape changes in the past and support landscape management, conservation and restoration programs. Floodplain habitats are lost, isolated and fragmented on account of land use. Nowadays, these habitats are threatened by modifications in the natural water regime, as well as agricultural and forestry practices. Floodplains have great importance because they provide a transition between aquatic habitats and terrestrial biotopes. Our analysis of aerial photographs and topographical maps revealed that the major predicted changes in the study area are related to agricultural abandonment and afforestation. The comparison of land cover maps from 1784 to 2005 showed intensification of agriculture with land cover conversions from arable land and orchards to grasslands, marshes and woodlands. The land use types that are mostly responsible for the fragmentation of the landscape are arable land, economic plantations and orchards. We found that fragmentation was greater after 1956. This was caused by socioeconomic changes and showed that the habitats of floodplains have changed intensively during the last 200 years. Knowledge of this last 200 years of history contributes to a more careful and wiser management of the region through biodiversity protection and environmental development.

In the section above Tiszaújlak, despite the presence of embankments, the River Tisza shows active meandering tendency and it splits into branches resulting in side channels, dead channels and backwaters that follow the main channel. In our work we examined the right- and the left-side riverbank sections of the River Tisza, between Tiszaújlak (Вилок) and Tiszasásvár (Тросник), as well as between Tiszaújlak and Tiszapéterfalva (Пийтерфолво), to reveal the extent of bar depositions between 2006 and 2015, and to what extent the intensity and direction of the riverbank formation processes were influenced by the material of the bank and the plant coverage, its rate and characteristics. We tried to reveal which sections were eroded by the river and what security risks they have for the safety of the settlements along the Tisza River. On the right side of the Tisza River riverbank 51, and on the left side 62 main measuring points were recorded by GPS positioning satellite in 2009, 2010 and 2015. Our results were compared to the satellite images of Google Earth taken in 2006, too. According to our experience, in several bends of the examined sections of the river, active bar deposition can be observed; in some cases more than 100 m of bar depositions were detected.

In this paper the results of a six-year study on riverine dragonflies (Odonata: Gomphidae) emergence based on the systematic collection of exuviae are presented. The exuviae were counted to determine variations in species composition, abundance and emergence pattern of gomphids at four different sites along the rivers Tisza and Szamos, as well as at a selected site in five different years. While the number of species decreased, the abundance of exuviae increased downstream the river Tisza. The total numbers of exuviae differed significantly between the dammed and non-dammed sites. The emergence of gomphids varied in initiation, synchronisation and also in duration between sites as well as between years. The onset of emergence was dependent mainly on the species-specific temperature sums, consequently earlier or later emergence resulted from the differences in the spring water temperature. In this study we evaluate how variations in taxonomic composition and physical structure of macrophyte stands affect plant-dwelling chironomid assemblages in highly variable macrophyte assemblages in two densely vegetated backwaters. By using multivariate explanatory techniques we found that similar vegetation composition did not unequivocally relate to similar chironomid assemblages, moreover the diversity of macrophyte stands did not correlate with the taxonomic diversity of chironomid assemblages in the backwaters investigated. Taxonomic composition and structural characteristics of the vegetation had little influence on the taxonomic or functional (i.e. feeding groups) composition of chironomid assemblages inhabiting them. Similarly, there are only weak relationships between the distribution of certain chironomid species or functional feeding groups and the environmental variables investigated. In general, the structure of the vegetation was more closely associated with the distribution of dominant chironomid taxa than compositional variables (i.e. density of specific macrophyte taxa). In summary, the structure of aquatic vegetation (i.e. position, size of a stand of vegetation, total plant density) and characteristics of the environment where it develops may be more important in shaping plant-dwelling chironomid assemblages than the taxonomic composition of the vegetation.

Morphometric and genetic differences were analysed for two closely related damselflies, Chalcolestes viridis and C. parvidens. A total of 305 male individuals were collected from six European countries (Austria, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Hungary and Portugal). Measurements from a total of 28 populations of C. viridis and C. parvidens and several intermediate forms were collected to determine if they can be definitely distinguished using simple morphometric characters. DNA sequences from two independent loci (nuclear ribosomal ITS region and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene) were analysed to test whether these taxa represent separate monophyletic groups as well as to compare the genetic distance with those found between well-accepted European Lestes species. Freshwater biodiversity is declining faster than marine or terrestrial diversity, yet its drivers are much less known. Although dams were shown to negatively affect river habitats, fragmentation by bridges has received less attention and is not as well understood. We tested whether and how bridges present barriers to aquatic insects by studying mass swarmings of Palingenia longicauda mayflies on river Tisza (NE-Hungary). Behavioural observations showed that upon approaching the bridge, upstream-flying mayflies typically turned back and 86% of them never crossed the bridge. Lack of physical contact showed that the bridge was an optical, rather than a mechanical barrier for the polarotactic mayflies. Imaging polarimetry showed that the bridge disrupted the horizontally polarizing channel guiding the flight of mayflies above the river. Energy loss, demonstrated by calorimetry, and time constraints forced females to lay eggs only downstream from the bridge. Counts of larval skins shed by swarming individuals showed nearly 2 to 1 female per male downstream from the bridge, while sex ratio above the bridge was slightly male-biased. We suggest that the surplus of parthenogenetic females, that produce only female larvae, downstream from the bridge may have led to the observed sex-ratio bias since the construction of the bridge (1942). Our results demonstrate that bridges can be optical barriers for aquatic insects and can cause population-level impacts, such as biased sex ratios, in natural populations. Sex ratio biases due to bridges may decrease effective population size and genetic variability, which may have contributed to the recent extinction of this species from most of Europe.

Seasonal studies of surface sediment bacterial communities, from two basins with differing trophic states within Lake Balaton (Hungary), were carried out using molecular (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, DGGE) and cultivation-based techniques. The presence of polyphosphate accumulates was tested using Neisser staining, and phosphatase activity was investigated on organic phosphorus (P) compound. Aerobic viable cell counts were significantly higher in the eutrophic than mesotrophic basin in each season. The lowest viable counts were observed in the autumn and the highest in spring and summer month in both basins. The DGGE fingerprints of the samples reflected that the composition of sediment bacterial communities in the two basins were distinct in spring and summer, and similar in autumn, but similarly diverse in all seasons. On the basis of partial 16S rDNA sequences, the 216 strains were affiliated with six major bacterial lineages: Firmicutes; Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria. Common species characterized from both basins constituted up to 66% of all identified phylotypes. Strains related to Bacillus sp. were dominant in all but one sample. Isolates affiliated with Aeromonas sp. prevailed in the sample taken from the mesotrophic basin in spring. The majority of the strains showed excess poly-P accumulation. Association of Neisser staining and phosphatase activity test results suggested that excess poly-P accumulation serves as P storage for sediment bacteria. Our study implied the importance of Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Aeromonas species in benthic bacterial P retention.

We assessed the relationship of vegetation composition and water chemical parameters in fi ve nutrient rich backwaters in NE Hungary. We used 126 plots and water samples analysed for 19 water chemical parameters. Our hypothesis was that environmental variables might be decisive for macrophyte species composition in waters with different nutrient content. We also supposed that community-environment and species-environment relationship of nutrient rich water may differ from nutrient poor ones. TWINSPAN analysis was used to reveal the main vegetation units, and detrended canonical correspondence analysis (DCCA) was used to explore the water chemical demands of these communities and the species-water chemical parameters relationships. We found 8 communities by TWINSPAN. Among the water chemical parameters Ca 2+ , COD, NO2, Mg 2+ , Cl - were important in differentiating the communities. In the nutrient rich backwaters we found similar results as other authors found in nutrient poor waters and fens. Glycerietum maximae association found in waters with high amount of COD and NO2 - , Typhetum angustifoliae association correlated negatively with these water chemi- cal parameters and Sparganietum erecti and Potametum lucentis associations prefer both habitats. Bolbo- schoenion and Schoenoplectetum lacustris associations have been found to prefer waters with high amount of Cl - . Trapetum natantis and Ceratophyllo-Nymphaeetum albae associations found to prefer waters with low amount of Ca 2+ , COD, NO2 - , Mg 2+ and Cl - , which proved the vulnerability of these protected associations in nutrient rich waters. In the case of species-water chemical parameters relationship we found high nitrogen correla- tion of Ceratophyllum demersum and high Ca 2+ correlation of Potamogeton lucens.

Sediment from a representative and ecologically important backwater wetland under the influence of River Tisza (Hungary) was chemically characterized for sediment pollutants. Phosphine production potential, methyl mercury, mercury, and other heavy metals were determined along with other sediment chemical and physical properties. The wetland site, which is relatively isolated, represents an important bird reserve and nature conservation area. Methyl mercury and total mercury content was also low reflecting little mercury pollution in the sediment. Results of heavy metal analysis showed that only copper was elevated with concentration slightly above the reported levels considered excessive in soils and sediments. Other sediment properties were in normal range except boron content, which was high. Results show sediment were relatively unpolluted but should be routinely monitored to insure that this ecologically important area remains environmentally safe for future generation.

We studied the dragonfly fauna along a 15 km stretch of thefloodplain of the regulated, first-order river Tisza, Hungary. Data on capturedand observed adults, larvae and exuvia were recorded. Observations were madefrom May to October 1998 and 1999 on 34 species, which is 52% of theHungarian fauna. Classification on the basis of faunistic similarity revealedthat habitat-level differences, associated with various degrees of physicalanthropogenic impact on bank vegetation, can exceed variation among the waterbodies of different types (backwater, pond, marsh, canal, river). The richestsites were dominated by structurally diverse macrophyte vegetation, while flowing waters (river and canal) were poorest in species. Odonata were found tobe reliable indicators of small-scale habitat patterns, reflecting vegetationdifferences even within single water bodies where the sampling spots werearranged just a few hundred metres apart. Along a gradient of utilisationintensity, the species number of Odonata assemblages and the summed relativeabundance of the five rarest species of the study area decreased linearly withincreasing fragmentation of the marginal vegetation. Sports fishermanactivities, implying disruption of the littoral marsh zone by establishment ofclearings and excessive trampling of the banks, can also be monitored bydragonfly faunistic investigations. Our results demonstrate that conservation ofthese varied floodplain water bodies requires the control of sports fishingactivity, suggesting that (i) to maintain the representative odonate fauna ofthe water bodies, some non-fragmented shores must be provided; and (ii) permanentfishing stands should not exceed 8 m mean width and should beseparated by at least 12 m of intact riparian sections.

Manual Land Cover Mapping using aerial photographs provides sufficient level of resolution for detailed vegetation or land cover maps. However, in some cases it is not possible to achieve the desired information over large areas, for example from historical data where the quality and amount of available images is definitely lower than from modern data. The use of automated and semiautomated methods offers the means to identify the vegetation cover using remotely sensed data. In this paper automated methods were tested on aerial photographs and satellite images to extract better and more reliable information about vegetation cover. These testswere performed by using automated analysis of LANDSAT7 images (with and without the surface model of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)) and two temporally similar aerial photographs. The spectral bands were analyzed with supervised (maximum likelihood) methods. In conclusion, the SRTM and the combination of two temporally similar aerial photographs from earlier years were useful in separating the vegetation cover on a floodplain area. In addition the different date of the vegetation season also gave reliable information about the land cover. High quality information about old and present vegetation on a large area is an essential prerequisites ensuring the conservation of ecosystems

Dragonflies are popular subjects in population ecology studies. These insects often compose small populations of a few thousand individuals, where the recapture ratio could be very high. They are easy to catch, to mark, and to watch. The populations are often closed making immigration and emigration negligible (Corbet 1999). The population size is estimated on the base of recapture ratio of marked individuals. In the case of territorial species the estimation is based only on the marked males because the recapture rate of the females is low (Pajunen 1962). The behaviour of dragonfly males can change when the population size alters. In males of Calopteryx h. haemorrhoidalis at high population size, most of the copulations are forced (Cordero & Andres 2002), and the post copulation guarding becomes more frequent (Cordero 1998). We analysed mating behaviour and morphometrical parameters of males in 2 closed Libellula fulva (Muller, 1764) populations with different dragonfly densities. Our hypothesis was that dragonfly males use different strategies to obtain mates in different population densities.

A laboratory incubation procedure followed by gas chromatographic detection was used to measure phosphine production potential in representative wastewater and sewage sludge sources. Phosphine production potential was determined by measuring the rate of phosphine formation in samples incubated under laboratory conditions over a seven day period when both electron donors and the targeted electron acceptor were not limiting factors. Results of our experiments showed that except the primary effluent and secondary effluent wastewater samples all other samples studied (influent wastewater, various type of sludge and sediment sources) produced phosphine. The minimum phosphine production potential value (0.39 pg/ml wastewater/day) was measured in composite influent wastewater samples while the maximum (268 pg/g wet sludge/day) was measured in sediment samples collected from an open-air sewage treatment plant.

The extended Kalman filter is a mathematical method for simultaneous state and parameter estimation, originally developed for use in engineering science. We applied the technique for modelling zooplankton population dynamics in nature. We described population dynamics by a stage-classified matrix projection model, where vital rates were allowed to vary between stages and over time. We tested the technique with simulated rotifer data and with field data of a Filinia longiseta (Rotifera) population from a sewage treatment pond in Hungary. Very quick changes in model parameters were typical for the population examined. However, the extended Kalman filter was capable of tracking parameter changes in the varying environment. The technique was also effective in filtering moderate sampling noise. The Kalman filter seems to be a very promising method for zooplankton population analysis.

The objectives of this research were to record the changes in composition of the open-water, bottom-dwelling chironomid fauna in Lake Balaton between 1978–1984, to examine the causes of these changes, and to discover their significance in the life of the lake.

As part of a larger study by our team of workers, chlorinated hydrocarbons in the sediments of the shallow Lake Balaton, the River Zala and two open-air BMKO-type sewage treatment plants were studied by gas chromatography. In addition to peaks relating to the presence of PCBs, an all-screening peak was found (with 3·78 min retention time), especially in fresh sediment samples. Later, gas chromatographic, infrared spectrophotometric and GC/MS analyses proved that the peak was caused by elementary sulphur, for which data are rare and incomplete in the hydrobiological literature. Further studies confirmed that, at least in shallow waters, different sulphur forms, including elementary sulphur, may be more important, both qualitatively and quantitatively, than previously realised, in energy cycling and diagenesis in sediments. There is thus an urgent need to investigate the sulphur cycle, previously little studied, compared with phosphorus and nitrogen.

Lake Balaton, the largest shallow lake in Central Europe, is about 20 000 years old. An enormous increase in tourism and the disproportionate building development of the last few decades has resulted in the acceleration of eutrophication in the lake. Widespread research to reveal the causes of water-quality deterioration and possible ways of protection against it have recently started. The investigation of the larvae of non-biting midges (Diptera: Chironomidae) in the sediment of the open-water zone has also begun. The contemporary faunal composition strongly correlates with the trophic gradient along the longitudinal axis of the lake. We therefore supposed that the eutrophication process should be identifiable from the analysis of subfossil chironomid head capsules from the upper (15 cm thick) layer of the sediment. We found that quantitative results could only be obtained when fragments as well as relatively intact head capsules are considered. Our data verify that the originally oligo-mesotrophic community has been gradually replaced by eutrophic species in a west to east direction. Large-bodied larvae belonging to the Chironomus plumosus group mix the sediment down to 15 cm as they build their tubes and consequently alter the original proportions of head capsules at the different levels. So the sequence of communities through the sediment-layers is not quite reliable.
