Abstract

Individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) present muscular weakness and potential changes in the activation of the peroneus longus muscle, which likely explains the high recurrence of ankle sprains in this population. However, there is conflicting evidence regarding the role of the peroneus longus activity in CAI, possibly due to the limited spatial resolution of the surface electromyography (sEMG) methods (i.e., bipolar sEMG). Recent studies employing high‐density sEMG (HD‐sEMG) have shown that the peroneus longus presents differences in regional activation, however, it is unknown whether this regional activation is maintained under pathological conditions such as CAI. This study aimed to compare the myoelectric activity, using HD‐sEMG, of each peroneus longus compartment (anterior and posterior) between individuals with and without CAI. Eighteen healthy individuals (No‐CAI group) and 18 individuals with CAI were recruited. In both groups, the center of mass (COM) and the sEMG amplitude at each compartment were recorded during ankle eversion at different force levels. For the posterior compartment, the sEMG amplitude of CAI group was significantly lower than the No‐CAI group (mean difference = 5.6% RMS; 95% CI = 3.4–7.6; p = 0.0001). In addition, it was observed a significant main effect for group (F1,32 = 9.608; p = 0.0040) with an anterior displacement of COM for the CAI group. These findings suggest that CAI alters the regional distribution of muscle activity of the peroneus longus during ankle eversion. In practice, altered regional activation may impact strengthening programs, prevention, and rehabilitation of CAI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Forefoot (FF) and rearfoot (RF) running techniques can induce different lower-limb muscle activation patterns. However, few studies have evaluated temporal changes in the electromyographic activity (EMG) of lower limb muscles during running. The aim of this study was to compare temporal changes in EMG amplitude between RF and FF running techniques. Eleven recreational runners ran on a treadmill at a self-selected speed, once using a RF strike pattern and once using a FF strike pattern (randomized order). The EMG of five lower limb muscles [rectus femoris (RFe), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), medial and lateral gastrocnemius (MG and LG)] was evaluated, using bipolar electrodes. EMG data from the RF and FF running techniques was then processed and compared with statistical parametric mapping (SPM), dividing the analysis of the running cycle into stance and swing phases. The MG and LG muscles showed higher activation during FF running at the beginning of the stance phase and at the end of the swing phase. During the end of the swing phase, the TA muscle's EMG amplitude was higher, when the RF running technique was used. A higher level of co-activation between the gastrocnemius and TA muscles was observed in both stance and swing phases using RF. The myoelectric behaviour of the RFe and BF muscles was similar during both running techniques. The current findings highlight that the two running techniques predominately reflect adjustments of the shank and not the thigh muscles, in both phases of the running cycle. Highlights Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) can reveal temporal differences in muscle activity between running techniques. The medial and lateral gastrocnemius muscles were more active at specific time-instants of the initial stance and late swing phases during forefoot (FF) running compared to rearfoot (RF) running. Abstract

Los estudios anatómicos describen que el músculo vasto medial (VM) se subdivide en dos componentes morfológicamente distintos, el vasto medial obliquus (VMO) y el vasto medial largo (VML). Sin embargo, existen discrepancias con respecto a la diferenciación funcional de estos componentes. El objetivo de este estudio fue comparar los niveles de activación del VMO y el VML mediante electromiografía de superficie de alta densidad. Doce mujeres jóvenes sanas (edad: 21,4 ± 2,0 años; peso: 58,1 ± 7,5 kg; altura: 1,6 ± 0,1 m), realizaron un ejercicio de rodilla de cadena cinética abierta durante el cual se registró la actividad EMG de la VMO y la VML con dos matrices dimensionales de 32 electrodos de superficie. Los ejercicios se realizaron con tres niveles de resistencia (5, 10 y 15% del peso corporal (PC)), considerando tres fases: concéntrica, isométrica y excéntrica. Abstract

Existe evidencia de que el reclutamiento de unidades motoras dentro de un mismo músculo presenta cierta heterogeneidad. Esta heterogeneidad en la activación de las unidades motoras ha llevado a la hipótesis de que ciertos músculos podrían organizarse neuromuscularmente como compartimentos funcionales, más allá de la existencia demostrable de estos a nivel morfológico. Esto implicaría que las unidades motoras agrupada en determinadas regiones musculares tendrían diferentes niveles de activación que unidades motoras ubicadas en otras zonas del mismo músculo. Varios estudios han evidenciado la existencia del reclutamiento diferencial de los músculos del tronco y las extremidades, demostrando la existencia de una compartimentación funcional. 30. Kinetic effect of the taping on the ankle during a change of direction in basketball players

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the kinetic effect, with (WT) and without (WoT) the use of ankle taping, during a change of direction in basketball players. Twenty-two players were evaluated (11 men, 11 women; age = 21.50 ± 1.74 years, mass = 72.80 ± 13.14 kg, height = 1.71 ± 0.11 m). The functional task of “change of direction in 60°” was registered with a 3D motion analysis system and a force plate. The torques of eversion, plantarflexion, and ankle joint reaction force were evaluated during the braking phase, using an inverse dynamics method. To compare between conditions a t-student or Wilcoxon tests were used. The results revealed that the use of ankle taping yield a decrease in the anterior joint reaction force (WoT = 4.21 ± 1.36 N/kg vs WT = 2.92 ± 1.07 N/kg, p < .0001) and the eversion torque (WoT = 0.56 ± 0.24 Nm/kg vs WT = 0.51 ± 0.20 Nm/kg, p = .02) during a change of direction in 60º. In conclusion, according to the sample of assessed basketball players, the use of this bandage could contribute to the functional stability of the ankle, decreasing the torque of fibularis muscles and the shear anterior-posterior between the shank-foot segments.

31. Hip and thigh muscular activity in professional soccer players during an isometric squat with andwithout controlled hip contraction

Abstract

The purpose of the present investigation was twofold 1) To compare the hip and thigh muscular activity of professional soccerplayers when performing the isometric squat with and without controlled hip contraction; 2) To determine the muscular relationshipsthat take place during these methods of execution of the exercise. Methods: 11 healthy male professional soccer players, randomlyperformed three modalities of isometric squat at a 60° knee flexion: conventional squat (SQ), squat with hip abduction contraction (SQ-ABD) and squat with hip adduction contraction (SQ-ADD), controlled at 70% of 1 maximum repetition. The activity of the gluteusmedius (GM), tensor fasciae latae (TFL), vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), semitendinosus (ST) and biceps femoris (BF) wasobtained through surface electromyography. Hip (GM/TFL), quadriceps (VM/VL) hamstrings (ST/BF), and hamstrings/quadriceps (H/Q) ratios were analyzed. Results: GM increases in SQ-ABD and SQ-ADD compared to SQ (p<.01). The TFL, VL, SM and BF muscleshave significantly higher activity in SQ-ADD compared to SQ (p<.05). The VL, VM and BF muscles significantly increase their activityin SQ-ADD compared to SQ-ABD (p <0.05). GM/TFL, VM/VL and ST/BF do not show significant differences between the threeisometric squat methods. The H/Q ratio was higher in SQ-ABD and SQ-ADD compared to SQ (p<.01). Conclusion: The squat with hipadduction contraction in a controlled manner increases the muscular activity of the hip and thigh. Performing this combined maneuver canhave benefits in sports training and rehabilitation because it increases the H/Q ratio of soccer players, El propósito de la presente investigación fue doble: 1) Comparar la actividad muscular de la cadera y el muslo de losfutbolistas profesionales cuando realizan sentadillas isométricas con y sin contracción controlada de la cadera; 2) Determinar lasrelaciones musculares que tienen lugar durante estas modalidades de ejecución del ejercicio. Metodología: 11 jugadores de fútbolprofesionales sanos, realizaron al azar tres modalidades de sentadilla isométrica con una flexión de rodilla de 60 °: sentadilla convencional(SQ), sentadilla con contracción de abducción de cadera (SQ-ABD) y sentadilla con contracción de aducción de cadera (SQ-ADD),controladas al 70% de 1 repetición máxima. Los músculos TFL, VL, SM y BF tienen unaactividad significativamente mayor en SQ-ADD en comparación con SQ (p<.05). Abstract

Pedestrian injuries related to the use of cell phone have increased in relation to the total number of pedestrian accidents. The aim of this study was to compare kinematic and electromyographic variables in both lower limbs at facing an obstacle, with (WC) and without (WoC) the use of a cell phone. Ten young women were evaluated, while walking and facing an obstacle WC and WoC. A 3D biomechanical model was used to evaluate the lower limb kinematics (hip, knee, ankle in the sagittal plane, together with «toe clearance»). At the same time, the electromyographic (EMG) activity was registered in the following muscles: tibialis anterior (TA), gastrocnemius medialis (GM), rectus femoris (RF) and biceps femoris (BF). The mean EMG amplitude of each muscle and the muscular coactivation percentage between: TA-GM and RA-BF were calculated. The strategy for both lower limbs considering the first (P1) and the second step (P2) were analyzed when crossing the obstacle, comparing between gait WC vs WoC. According to results, the gait WC increase the toe clearance, hip flexion, and the GM amplitude, observed both in P1 as P2 when the person crossed the obstacle. Furthermore, the P2 revealed an increase in the knee and ankle flexion. On the other hand, the TA amplitude and the muscular coactivation between TA-GM also increased WC in the P2. In conclusion, the kinematic and electromyographic variables in the lower limbs are modified when crossing an obstacle WC. These findings could indicate a protective strategy during the dual-task evaluated, minimizing the risk of falling., Las lesiones de transeúntes relacionadas al uso de teléfono celular han aumentado en relación con el total de accidentespeatonales. El objetivo de este estudio fue comparar variables cinemáticas y electromiográficas de ambas extremidades inferiores alenfrentar un obstáculo, con (CC) y sin (SC) el uso de celular. Diez mujeres jóvenes fueron evaluadas, las cuales caminaron y enfrentaronun obstáculo CC y SC. Con un modelo biomecánico 3D se evaluó la cinemática de extremidad inferior (plano sagital de cadera, rodilla,tobillo, junto al «toe clearance»). Al mismo tiempo se registró la actividad electromiográfica (EMG) de los siguientes músculos: tibialanterior (TA), gastrocnemio medial (GM), recto anterior (RA) y bíceps femoral (BF). Se calculó la amplitud EMG promedio de cadamúsculo, y el porcentaje de coactivación muscular entre: TA-GM y RA-BF. Se analizó la estrategia de ambas piernas, considerando unprimer (P1) y segundo paso (P2) al cruzar el obstáculo, comparando entre una marcha CC vs CS. Según los resultados, la marcha CCincrementa el toe clearance, flexión de cadera, y la amplitud del GM, observado tanto en P1 como P2 al cruzar el obstáculo. Adicionalmente,el P2 reveló un incremento en la flexión de rodilla y tobillo. Por otro lado, la amplitud del TA y coactivación muscular entre TA-GMtambién aumentó CC en el P2. En conclusión, las variables cinemáticas y electromiográficas en las extremidades inferiores se modificanal cruzar un obstáculo CC. Programa de Doctorado en Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte, Línea de Investigación: Actividad Física, Salud y Calidad de Vida, Clave Programa: DAF, Código Línea: 33, Las unidades funcionales del sistema neuromuscular son las unidades motoras (UMs), las cuales pueden ser clasificadas según sus características morfológicas, funcionales y bioquímicas. Antecedentes previos demuestran que la activación de estas UMs en el interior de un músculo puede resultar ser heterogénea. Las interpretaciones de esto han sido variadas. Entre ellas se ha atribuido a que las UMs de zonas específicas del músculo, podrían tener también funciones específicas. Lo anterior ha implicado la identificación de ciertos compartimentos neuromusculares o funcionales en el interior de algunos músculos. El músculo masetero es un importante componente del sistema estomatognático y cumple complejas funciones como la masticación, deglución y fonación. La presente tesis tuvo como objetivo investigar la presencia de una compartimentalización funcional del músculo masetero superficial (MS) en personas jóvenes dentadas naturales (DN) y personas desdentadas totales rehabilitadas con prótesis removibles (PR) y prótesis fijas sobre implantes (PFSI). En una muestra de 20 jóvenes DN y 28 desdentados totales (PR=14 y PFSI=14), se estudió la actividad electromiográfica del MS mediante electromiografía de superficie de alta densidad, durante cuatro niveles de fuerza masticatoria (20, 40, 60 y 80% de la fuerza masticatoria voluntaria máxima [FMVM]), la cual fue registrada por un gnatodinamómetro ubicado a nivel del primer molar. Los resultados indican que las UMs mostraron un reclutamiento heterogéneo a bajos niveles de fuerza (20, 40 y 60%), en los grupos DN y PR. Abstract

One of the tools currently used for strengthening the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex (LPHC) is the TRX ® Rip Trainer™. This device produces asymmetric destabilizing forces by means of an elastic resistance (ER) cord. This study aimed to compare the level of muscle activity of LPHC, during the performance of three isometric exercises using TRX ® Rip Trainer™. Twenty-two healthy, physically active men (mean age 23 ± 2.35 years) were evaluated during the performance of “Drag” (anterior), "Drive" (posterior) and “Stack” (rotation) isometrically resisted exercises, performed using TRX ® Rip Trainer ™. The muscle activity of longissimus, external oblique, gluteus medius, and biceps femoris was recorded by means of surface electromyography. There were differences regarding the side of the ER location in most of the evaluated muscles (p <.05). In addition, a Friedman test revealed differences between the exercises in relation to the evaluated muscle (p<.05). Usually, Stack exercise produces a higher level of activity in these muscles. The findings of this study describe the behavior of LPHC muscles during the use of TRX ® Rip Trainer ™., Una de las herramientas actualmente utilizadas para el fortalecimiento del complejo lumbo-pelvis-cadera (CLPC) es el TRX® Rip Trainer ™. Este dispositivo produce una fuerza desestabilizadora asimétrica por medio de un cordón de resistencia elástica (RE). Este estudio tuvo como objetivo comparar el nivel de actividad muscular de CLPC, durante la realización de tres ejercicios isométricos utilizando TRX® Rip Trainer ™. Veintidós hombres sanos, físicamente activos (edad media de 23 ± 2,35 años) se evaluaron durante la realización de los ejercicios de resistencia a la isometría “Drag” (anterior), "Drive" (posterior) y "Stack" (rotación), realizados con TRX® Rip Trainer ™. Mediante electromiografía de superficie, se registró la actividad muscular de longissimus, oblicuo externo, glúteo medio y bíceps femoral. Hubo diferencias en relación con el lado de la ubicación de RE, en la mayoría de los músculos evaluados (p <.05). Además, un test de Friedman reveló diferencias entre los ejercicios en relación con el músculo evaluado (p <.05). Por lo general, el ejercicio Stack produce un mayor nivel de actividad en estos músculos. Los resultados indicados en este estudio describen el comportamiento de los músculos CLPC durante el uso de TRX® Rip Trainer ™.

46. Relationship between lower limb anthropometry and temporo-spatial parameters in gait of young adults

Abstract

Temporo-spatial parameters (TSP) are commonly used to characterize human gait. These help to differentiate population groups in different conditions of gait, but can be influenced by lower limb anthropometry. Different strategies are assumed to normalize TSP and permit comparison among people. However, it is not clear how dimensions of the different lower limb segments influence gait TSP. The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between gait TSP and length of the thigh, leg and foot in young adults. The body segments lengths were adjusted for individual height and correlated with gait TSP. We found a correlation between foot length and step width (r = 0.44). When data were adjusted for gender, step time, stride time, cadence and gait speed correlated with foot length in men (r = 0.51, 0.49, -0.49 and -0.43, respectively). Among women, these same TSP correlated only with thigh length (r = 0.43, 0.46, -0.47 and -0.37, respectively). Step and stride length correlated with leg (r = 0.46 and 0.48) and thigh length (r = 0.44 and 0.44) only in men. In conclusion, anthropometric parameters influence TSP differentially for men and women. These data should be considered when studying population groups including people from both genders., Los parámetros temporo-espaciales (PTE) son comúnmente usados para caracterizar la marcha humana. Estos ayudan a diferenciar grupos de poblaciones en diferentes condiciones de marcha, pero pueden ser influenciados por la antropometría de miembro inferior. Diferentes estrategias asumen la normalización de PTE y permiten comparar entre personas. Sin embargo, no está claro como las dimensiones de los diferentes segmentos de miembro inferior influyen los PTE en la marcha. El objetivo de este estudio fue verificar la relación entre los PTE de la marcha y la longitud del muslo, pierna y pie en adultos jóvenes. Las longitudes de los segmentos corporales fueron ajustadas por la altura de cada persona y correlacionadas con los PTE de la marcha. Se encontró una correlación entre la longitud del pie y el ancho del paso (r= 0.44). Cuando los datos fueron ajustados por género, el tiempo del paso, tiempo de la zancada, cadencia y velocidad de la marcha correlacionaron con la longitud del pie en hombres (r = 0.51, 0.49, -0.49 and -0.43, respectivamente). Entre las mujeres, estos mismos PTE solo correlacionaron con la longitud del muslo (r = 0.43, 0.46, -0.47 and -0.37, respectivamente). La longitud del paso y la zancada correlacionaron con la longitud de la pierna (r = 0.46 and 0.48) y el muslo (r = 0.44 and 0.44) solo en hombres. En conclusión, los parámetros antropométricos influyen de forma diferente los PTE para hombre y mujeres. Estos datos podrían ser considerados cuando se estudian grupos de poblaciones incluyendo personas de ambos géneros.

Abstract

Purpose To assess the presence of control impairment (CI) of the lumbopelvic region in the axial plane in men without low back pain (LBP) with CI in the sagittal plane. Methods: Twenty-four males, between 18 and 23 of age, BMI = normal, who did not report episodes of LBP in the 12 months prior to the study, were studied. Assessment of the sagittal control of the lumbopelvic region was performed during stand to sit. Nine participants demonstrated CI in sagittal plane and 15 did not. An active hip lateral rotation (HLR) test was performed, in which lumbopelvic rotation during HLR was assessed using a three-dimensional motion analysis system. Results: Patients with CI in sagittal plane had a greater percentage of their total lumbopelvic pelvic rotation at 60% of HLR range compared to those without CI (p < 0.05; d = 0.93). No significant differences in the total lumbopelvic and HLR range of motion were found between the groups. Conclusion: Men without LBP who experience CI of the lumbopelvic region in the sagittal plane also show CI in the axial plane. The control deficiencies were not related to the total range of lumbopelvic or HLR range of motion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
