(Abridged) Sulfur chemistry is poorly understood in the process of low-mass star and planet formation, where the main carriers of sulfur are still unknown. Despite the fact that simple S-bearing molecules are usually detected toward embedded sources, large surveys of S-bearing molecules with high angular resolution and sensitive observations are currently lacking. The goal of this work is to present an unbiased survey of simple sulfur-bearing species in protostars and provide new statistics. In addition, we investigate the role of S-bearing molecules in accretion processes and the connection between (non-)detection of complex organic molecules (COMs) and S-related species. We present the observations of sulfur-bearing species that are part of the Perseus ALMA Chemical Survey (PEACHES). We analyzed a total of 50 Class 0/I sources with an average angular resolution of about 0.6" (~180 au) in ALMA band 6. We present detection rates for CS, SO, 34SO, and SO2. The SO/34SO ratio is lower than the canonical value of 22 and the lowest values are found for those sources rich in COMs. This ratio, therefore, seems to be a good tracer of the inner high-density envelope. The detection of multiple COMs seems to be related to the presence of collimated outflows and SO2 emission seems to trace the warm gas in those sources where CH3OH is also detected. The SO2 abundances toward the PEACHES sample are, on average, two orders of magnitude lower than values from the Ophiuchus star-forming region and comparable with sources in Taurus, suggesting that the sulfur depletion in the gas-phase could depend on the external UV radiation. Finally, the SO2 emission detected in different evolutionary stages seems to arise from different physical mechanisms: high column density of warm material in Class 0 sources, shocks in Class I/II, and exposure to UV radiation from the protostar in more evolved Class II disks., Comment: 31 pages, 17 Figures (including appendix)

We present 5 deg^2 (~250 pc^2) HCN, HNC, HCO+, and CO J=1-0 maps of the Orion B GMC, complemented with existing wide-field [CI] 492 GHz maps, as well as new pointed observations of rotationally excited HCN, HNC, H13CN, and HN13C lines. We detect anomalous HCN J=1-0 hyperfine structure line emission almost everywhere in the cloud. About 70% of the total HCN J=1-0 luminosity arises from gas at A_V < 8 mag. The HCN/CO J=1-0 line intensity ratio shows a bimodal behavior with an inflection point at A_V < 3 mag typical of translucent gas and UV-illuminated cloud edges. We find that most of the HCN J=1-0 emission arises from extended gas with n(H2) ~< 10^4 cm^-3, even lower density gas if the ionization fraction is > 10^-5 and electron excitation dominates. This result explains the low-A_V branch of the HCN/CO J=1-0 intensity ratio distribution. Indeed, the highest HCN/CO ratios (~0.1) at A_V < 3 mag correspond to regions of high [CI] 492 GHz/CO J=1-0 intensity ratios (>1) characteristic of low-density PDRs. Enhanced FUV radiation favors the formation and excitation of HCN on large scales, not only in dense star-forming clumps. The low surface brightness HCN and HCO+ J=1-0 emission scale with I_FIR (a proxy of the stellar FUV radiation field) in a similar way. Together with CO J=1-0, these lines respond to increasing I_FIR up to G0~20. On the other hand, the bright HCN J=1-0 emission from dense gas in star-forming clumps weakly responds to I_FIR once the FUV radiation field becomes too intense (G0>1500). The different power law scalings (produced by different chemistries, densities, and line excitation regimes) in a single but spatially resolved GMC resemble the variety of Kennicutt-Schmidt law indexes found in galaxy averages. As a corollary for extragalactic studies, we conclude that high HCN/CO J=1-0 line intensity ratios do not always imply the presence of dense gas., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A. 24 pages, 18 figures, plus Appendix. (Abridged) Massive stars can determine the evolution of molecular clouds with their strong ultraviolet (UV) radiation fields. Moreover, UV radiation is relevant in setting the thermal gas pressure in star-forming clouds, whose influence can extend from the rims of molecular clouds to entire star-forming galaxies. Probing the fundamental structure of nearby molecular clouds is therefore crucial to understand how massive stars shape their surrounding medium and how fast molecular clouds are destroyed, specifically at their UV-illuminated edges, where models predict an intermediate zone of neutral atomic gas between the molecular cloud and the surrounding ionized gas whose size is directly related to the exposed physical conditions. We present the highest angular resolution (~$0.5$", corresponding to $207$ au) and velocity-resolved images of the molecular gas emission in the Horsehead nebula, using CO J=3-2 and HCO$^+$ J=4-3 observations with ALMA. We find that CO and HCO$^+$ are present at the edge of the cloud, very close to the ionization (H$^+$/H) and dissociation fronts (H/H$_2$), suggesting a very thin layer of neutral atomic gas (<$650$ au) and a small amount of CO-dark gas ($A_V=0.006-0.26$ mag) for stellar UV illumination conditions typical of molecular clouds in the Milky Way. The new ALMA observations reveal a web of molecular gas filaments with an estimated thermal gas pressure of $P_{\mathrm{th}} = (2.3 - 4.0) \times 10^6$ K cm$^{-3}$, and the presence of a steep density gradient at the cloud edge that can be well explained by stationary isobaric PDR models with pressures consistent with our estimations. However, in the HII region and PDR interface, we find $P_{\mathrm{th,PDR}} > P_{\mathrm{th,HII}}$, suggesting the gas is slightly compressed. (Abridged) Physical processes such as accretion shocks are thought to be common in the protostellar phase, where the envelope component is still present, and they can release molecules from the dust to the gas phase, altering the original chemical composition of the disk. Consequently, the study of accretion shocks is essential for a better understanding of the physical processes at disk scales and their chemical output. The purpose of this work is to assess the characteristics of accretion shocks traced by sulfur-related species. We present ALMA high angular resolution observations (0.1") of the Class I protostar Oph-IRS 44. The continuum emission at 0.87 mm is observed, together with sulfur-related species such as SO, SO$_{2}$, and $^{34}$SO$_{2}$. Six lines of SO$_{2}$, two lines of $^{34}$SO$_{2}$, and one line of SO are detected toward IRS 44. The emission of all the detected lines peaks at ~0.1" (~14 au) from the continuum peak and we find infalling-rotating motions inside 30 au. However, only redshifted emission is seen between 50 and 30 au. Colder and more quiescent material is seen toward an offset region located at a distance of ~400 au from the protostar, and we do not find evidence of a Keplerian profile in these data. Accretion shocks are the most plausible explanation for the high temperatures, high densities, and velocities found for the SO$_{2}$ emission. When material enters the disk--envelope system, it generates accretion shocks that increase the dust temperature and desorb SO$_{2}$ molecules from dust grains. High-energy SO$_{2}$ transitions (~200 K) seem to be the best tracers of accretion shocks that can be followed up by future higher angular resolution ALMA observations and compared to other species to assess their importance in releasing molecules from the dust to the gas phase., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

Isotopic ratios provide a powerful tool for understanding the origins of materials, including the volatile and refractory matter within solar system bodies. Recent high sensitivity observations of molecular isotopologues, in particular with ALMA, have brought us new information on isotopic ratios of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in star and planet forming regions as well as the solar system objects. Solar system exploration missions, such as Rosetta and Cassini, have given us further new insights. Meanwhile, the recent development of sophisticated models for isotope chemistry including detailed gas-phase and grain surface reaction network has made it possible to discuss how isotope fractionation in star and planet forming regions is imprinted into the icy mantles of dust grains, preserving a record of the initial isotopic state of solar system materials. This chapter reviews recent progress in observations of molecular isotopologues in extra-solar planet forming regions, prestellar/protostellar cores and protoplanetary disks, as well as objects in our solar system -- comets, meteorites, and planetary/satellite atmospheres -- and discusses their connection by means of isotope chemical models., Comment: To appear in Protostars and Planets VII, University of Arizona Press, eds. Methanol (CH$_3$OH) is at the root of organic ice chemistry in protoplanetary disks. However, its weak emission has made detections difficult. To date, gas-phase CH$_3$OH has been detected in only one Class II disk, TW Hya. We use the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to search for a total of four CH$_3$OH emission lines in bands 6 and 7 toward the disk around the young Herbig Ae star HD 163296. The disk-averaged column density of methanol and its related species formaldehyde (H$_2$CO) are estimated assuming optically thin emission in local thermodynamic equilibrium. We compare these results to the gas-phase column densities of the TW Hya disk. No targeted methanol lines were detected individually nor after line stacking. The 3$\sigma$ disk-integrated intensity upper limits are $< 51$ mJy km s$^{-1}$ for the band 6 lines and $< 26$ mJy km s$^{-1}$ for the band 7 lines. The band 7 lines provide the strictest 3$\sigma$ upper limit on disk-averaged column density with $N_{\mathrm{avg}} < 5.0 \times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$. The methanol-to-formaldehyde ratio is CH$_3$OH/H$_2$CO $< 0.24$ in the HD 163296 disk compared to a ratio of $1.27$ in the TW Hya disk. Differences in the stellar irradiation of Herbig disks compared to T Tauri disks likely influence the gaseous methanol and formaldehyde content. Possible reasons for the lower HD 163296 methanol-to-formaldehyde ratio include: a higher than expected gas-phase formation of H$_2$CO in the HD 163296 disk, uncertainties in the grain surface formation efficiency of CH$_3$OH and H$_2$CO, and differences in the disk structure and/or CH$_3$OH and H$_2$CO desorption processes that release the molecules from ice mantles back into the gas phase. Ortho-to-para (o/p) ratios of species like water, ammonia and formaldehyde (H2CO) are believed to encode information about the formation history of the molecule. Measurements of o/p ratios in protoplanetary disks could thus be used to constrain their physical and chemical histories. We present the first measurement of the H2CO o/p ratio in a protoplanetary disk, using three ortho and two para lines observed with the Sub-millimeter Array (SMA) combined with one highly resolved measurement of a single H2CO line with ALMA toward the disk around Herbig Ae star HD 163296. We find a disk-averaged H2CO o/p ratio of 1.8-2.8 (depending on the assumed disk structure), corresponding to a spin temperature of 11-22 K. We also derive a rotational temperature of 24 K from the flux ratio of the three ortho lines. The observed spatial distribution, as seen by ALMA, as well as the rotational temperature and the o/p ratio, at the large scales the SMA is most sensitive to, are consistent with a low-temperature formation pathway, most likely grain surface chemistry, of H2CO in this disk., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new constraints on gas-phase C, N, and O abundances in the molecular layer of the IM Lup protoplanetary disk. Building on previous physical and chemical modeling of this disk, we use new ALMA observations of C$_2$H to constrain the C/O ratio in the molecular layer to be $\sim0.8$, i.e., higher than the solar value of $\sim0.54$. We use archival ALMA observations of HCN and H$^{13}$CN to show that no depletion of N is required (assuming an interstellar abundance of $7.5\times10^{-5}$ per H). These results suggest that an appreciable fraction of O is sequestered in water ice in large grains settled to the disk mid-plane. Similarly, a fraction of the available C is locked up in less volatile molecules. By contrast, N remains largely unprocessed, likely as N$_2$. This pattern of depletion suggests the presence of true abundance variations in this disk, and not a simple overall depletion of gas mass. If these results hold more generally, then combined CO, C$_2$H, and HCN observations of disks may provide a promising path for constraining gas-phase C/O and N/O during planet-formation. Cometary studies suggest that the organic composition of the early Solar Nebula was rich in complex nitrile species such a CH$_3$CN. Recent ALMA detections in protoplanetary disks suggest that these species may be common during planet and comet formation, but connecting gas phase measurements to cometary abundances first requires constraints on formation chemistry and distributions of these species. We present here the detection of seven spatially resolved transitions of CH$_3$CN in the protoplanetary disk around the T-Tauri star TW Hya. Using a rotational diagram analysis we find a disk-averaged column density of N$_T$=1.45$^{+0.19}_{-0.15}\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ and a rotational temperature of T$_{rot}$=32.7$^{+3.9}_{-3.4}$ K. A radially resolved rotational diagram shows the rotational temperature to be constant across the disk, suggesting that the CH$_3$CN emission originates from a layer at z/r$\sim$0.3. Through comparison of the observations with predictions from a disk chemistry model, we find that grain-surface reactions likely dominate CH$_3$CN formation and that in situ disk chemistry is sufficient to explain the observed CH$_3$CN column density profile without invoking inheritance from the protostellar phase. However, the same model fails to reproduce a Solar System cometary abundance of CH$_3$CN relative to H$_2$O in the midplane, suggesting that either vigorous vertical mixing or some degree of inheritance from interstellar ices occurred in the Solar Nebula., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Nitrogen fractionation is commonly used to assess the thermal history of Solar System volatiles. With ALMA it is for the first time possible to directly measure 14N/15N ratios in common molecules during the assembly of planetary systems. We present ALMA observations of the H13CN and HC15N J=3-2 lines at 0".5 angular resolution, toward a sample of six protoplanetary disks, selected to span a range of stellar and disk structure properties. Adopting a typical 12C/13C ratio of 70, we find comet-like 14N/15N ratios of 80-160 in 5/6 of the disks (3 T Tauri and 2 Herbig Ae disks) and lack constraints for one of the T Tauri disks (IM Lup). There are no systematic differences between T Tauri and Herbig Ae disks, or between full and transition disks within the sample. In addition, no correlation is observed between disk-averaged D/H and 14N/15N ratios in the sample. One of the disks, V4046 Sgr, presents unusually bright HCN isotopologue emission, enabling us to model the radial profiles of H13CN and HC15N. We find tentative evidence of an increasing 14N/15N ratio with radius, indicating that selective photodissociation in the inner disk is important in setting the 14N/15N ratio during planet formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 16 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables

HCN is a commonly observed molecule in Solar System bodies and in interstellar environments. Its abundance with respect to CN is a proposed tracer of UV exposure. HCN is also frequently used to probe the thermal history of objects, by measuring its degree of nitrogen fractionation. To address the utility of HCN as a probe of disks, we present ALMA observations of CN, HCN, H13CN and HC15N toward the protoplanetary disk around Herbig Ae star MWC480, and of CN and HCN toward the disk around T Tauri star DM Tau. Emission from all molecules is clearly detected and spatially resolved, including the first detection of HC15N in a disk. Toward MWC 480, CN emission extends radially more than 1" exterior to the observed cut-off of HCN emission. Quantitative modeling further reveals very different radial abundance profiles for CN and HCN, with best-fit outer cut-off radii of >300 AU and 110+-10 AU, respectively. This result is in agreement with model predictions of efficient HCN photodissociation into CN in the outer-part of the disk where the vertical gas and dust column densities are low. No such difference in CN and HCN emission profiles are observed toward DM Tau, suggestive of different photochemical structures in Herbig Ae and T Tauri disks. We use the HCN isotopologue data toward the MWC 480 disk to provide the first measurement of the 14N/15N ratio in a disk. We find a low disk averaged 14N/15N ratio of 200+-100, comparable to what is observed in cloud cores and comets, demonstrating interstellar inheritance and/or efficient nitrogen fractionation in this disk., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

To study the usefulness of \CFP\ as a tracer of the regions where C\p\ and \HH\ coexist in the interstellar medium. We used the Plateau de Bure Interferometer to synthesize \CFP\ J=1-0 absorption at 102.6 GHz toward the core of the distant HII region W49N at l = 43.2\degr, b=0.0\degr, and we modeled the fluorine chemistry in diffuse/translucent molecular gas. We detected \CFP\ absorption over a broad range of velocity showing that \CFP\ is widespread in the \HH-bearing Galactic disk gas. Originally detected in dense gas in the Orion Bar and Horsehead PDR, \CFP\ was subsequently detected in absorption from diffuse and translucent clouds seen toward \bll\ and 3C111. Here we showed that \CFP\ is distributed throughout the diffuse and translucent molecular disk gas with N(\CFP)/N(\HH) $= 1.5-2.0\times10^{-10}$, increasing to N(\CFP)/N(\HH) $= 3.5\times10^{-10}$ in one cloud at 39 \kms\ having higher N(\HH) $\approx 3\times10^{21}\pcc$. Models of the fluorine chemistry reproduce the observed column densities and relative abundance of HF, from which \CFP\ forms, but generally overpredict the the column density of \CFP\ by factors of 1.4-4. We show that a free space photodissociation rate $\Gamma \ga 10^{-9}\ps$, comparable to that of CH, might account for much of the discrepancy but a recent calculation finds a value about ten times smaller. In the heavily blended and kinematically complex spectra seen toward W49, \CFP\ absorption primarily traces the peaks of the \HH\ distribution., Comment: A&A in press

Small hydrocarbons, such as C2H, C3H and C3H2 are more abundant in photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) than expected based on gas-phase chemical models. To explore the hydrocarbon chemistry further, we observed a key intermediate species, the hydrocarbon ion l-C3H+, in the Horsehead PDR with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer at high-angular resolution (6''). We compare with previous observations of C2H and c-C3H2 at similar angular resolution and new gas-phase chemical model predictions to constrain the dominant formation mechanisms of small hydrocarbons in low-UV flux PDRs. We find that, at the peak of the HCO emission (PDR position), the measured l-C3H+, C2H and c-C3H2 abundances are consistent with current gas-phase model predictions. However, in the first PDR layers, at the 7.7 mum PAH band emission peak, which are more exposed to the radiation field and where the density is lower, the C2H and c-C3H2 abundances are underestimated by an order of magnitude. At this position, the l-C3H+ abundance is also underpredicted by the model but only by a factor of a few. In addition, contrary to the model predictions, l-C3H+ peaks further out in the PDR than the other hydrocarbons, C2H and c-C3H2. This cannot be explained by an excitation effect. Current gas-phase photochemical models thus cannot explain the observed abundances of hydrocarbons, in particular in the first PDR layers. Our observations are consistent with a top-down hydrocarbon chemistry, in which large polyatomic molecules or small carbonaceous grains are photo-destroyed into smaller hydrocarbon molecules/precursors., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Aims. We investigate the dominant formation mechanism of H2CO and CH3OH in the Horsehead PDR and its associated dense core. Methods. We performed deep integrations of several H2CO and CH3OH lines at two positions in the Horsehead, namely the PDR and dense core, with the IRAM-30m telescope. In addition, we observed one H2CO higher frequency line with the CSO telescope at both positions. We determine the H2CO and CH3OH column densities and abundances from the single-dish observations complemented with IRAM-PdBI high-angular resolution maps (6") of both species. We compare the observed abundances with PDR models including either pure gas-phase chemistry or both gas-phase and grain surface chemistry. Results. We derive CH3OH abundances relative to total number of hydrogen atoms of ~1.2e-10 and ~2.3e-10 in the PDR and dense core positions, respectively. These abundances are similar to the inferred H2CO abundance in both positions (~2e-10). We find an abundance ratio H2CO/CH3OH of ~2 in the PDR and ~1 in the dense core. Pure gas-phase models cannot reproduce the observed abundances of either H2CO or CH3OH at the PDR position. Both species are therefore formed on the surface of dust grains and are subsequently photodesorbed into the gas-phase at this position. At the dense core, on the other hand, photodesorption of ices is needed to explain the observed abundance of CH3OH, while a pure gas-phase model can reproduce the observed H2CO abundance. The high-resolution observations show that CH3OH is depleted onto grains at the dense core. CH3OH is thus present in an envelope around this position, while H2CO is present in both the envelope and the dense core itself. Conclusions.
