2. Potential improvement for elastocaloric performances of shape memory alloys through comparing with natural rubber

Abstract

The elastocaloric (eC) effects of natural rubber (NR) and shape memory alloys (SMAs) are compared and potential improvement for eC performances of SMAs is proposed. Both the plateau and hysteresis of stress-strain curve in NR and SMAs are observed. They are attributed to the similar phase transformation: strain-induced crystallization (SIC) in NR and martensitic transformation in SMAs. For NR, the drawback of large strain can be reduced by pre-strain. For SMAs, the stress change with strain is smaller in stress plateau regime. Thus, the drawback of large dynamic stress of SMAs is proposed to be reduced by a static pre-stress for working directly in this stress plateau regime. Choosing an appropriate pre-strain (pre-stress) and strain amplitude can make eC effect of NR working in the phase transformation (SIC) regime. This method can improve both the eC strength and fatigue life in NR. Due to the similar phase transformation (martensitic transformation) of SMAs to NR, this method is also proposed to improve the eC performances of SMAs., Comment: This paper is more about ideas. 3. Comparison of caloric effects in view of application

Abstract

In the framework of solid-state cooling technology, four kinds of caloric effects, magnetocaloric (MC), electrocaloric (EC), barocaloric (BC) and elastocaloric (eC) effects, are compared in view of environment discussion and application fields. This field is primarily developed in the intention of protecting the environment. However, some widely researched caloric materials do not meet environmental friendly criteria. Currently, new caloric materials (called "good" material) possessing the properties of friendly environment, low cost, high caloric performance and practicability (low stress) need to be found. In view of application, all current caloric effects/materials are investigated for the common objective of cooling. However, the adapted application cases for different caloric effects/materials are not considered. Due to the different stimuli and different intrinsic properties (different caloric performance for different dimensions) of caloric materials, they can exhibit unique advantage to different application cases. "Good" caloric material used for large-scale application is still less and deserve more search. 4. Temperature dependence of elastocaloric effect in natural rubber

Abstract

The temperature dependence of the elastocaloric (eC) effect in natural rubber (NR) is studied adiabatically and isothermally. A broad temperature span for eC effect from 0 oC to 49 oC is observed. The maximum adiabatic temperature change ({\Delta}T) is 12 K at strain of 6 and occurs at 10 oC. These behaviors can be predicted by the temperature dependence of strain-induced crystallization (SIC) and temperature-induced crystallization (TIC). In isothermal condition, the deduced {\Delta}T from Clausius-Clapeyron factor can agree with the direct measurement at different temperatures. The eC performance of NR is compared with shape memory alloys (SMAs). The potential of NR for a near room temperature cooing application is primarily proved. This will open the SIC research of NR towards eC cooling direction., Comment: Natural rubber (NR) can solve the problems emerging in the current caloric materials. The potential of NR used for near room temperature cooling application is predicted by temperature dependence of strain-induced crystallization (SIC) and is proved by direct measurement. This will open the SIC research towards eC cooling direction
