Increasing pollution in the Arctic poses challenges in terms of geographical and ecological monitoring. The Baffin Bay-Davis Strait (BBDS) region in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago is of particular concern due to the potential for increased shipping traffic and oil exploration. However, data on background contaminants associated with oil exploration/spills/natural seeps (e.g., polycyclic aromatic compounds [PAC]) and measures of potential effects for Arctic birds are limited. We developed a toxicogenomics approach to investigate the background gene expression profiles for two Arctic-breeding seabirds, the thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia) and the black guillemot (Cepphus grylle), which will aid effects-based monitoring efforts. Chemical burdens (53 PACs and 5 trace elements) and transcriptomic profiles (31 genes using a ToxChip PCR array) were examined in liver tissues (n = 30) of each species collected from the Qaqulluit and Akpait National Wildlife Areas in the BBDS region. While chemical and transcriptomic profiles demonstrated low variability across individuals for each species, gene expression signatures were able to distinguish guillemots collected from two distinct colonies. This toxicogenomics approach provides benchmark data for two Arctic seabirds and is promising for future monitoring efforts and strategic environmental assessments in this sensitive ecosystem and areas elsewhere in the circumpolar Arctic that are undergoing change.

The N = 126 factory currently under construction at Argonne National Laboratory’s ATLAS facility will make use of multi-nucleon transfer reactions to produce nuclei around the N = 126 shell closure that are of interest for the study of the rapid neutron capture process and are not available in sufficient quantities using common particle-fragmentation, target-fragmentation, or fission production techniques. As part of this facility, a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) buncher will cool and accumulate the beam, converting a high-emittance, continuous beam into a low-emittance bunched beam suitable for trapping. Here, the construction of the RFQ cooler-buncher, based on the design used at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory’s BECOLA and EBIT cooler-bunchers, will be discussed. This design features injection optics optimized to maximize acceptance, separated cooling and bunching regions, and a simplified RFQ electrode construction.

A new facility, the N = 126 factory, is currently under construction at Argonne National Laboratory. It will use multi-nucleon transfer reactions to create neutron-rich isotopes of very heavy elements for studies of interest to the formation of the A ∼ 195 abundance peak in the r-process. This region of the nuclear chart is difficult to access by standard fragmentation or spallation reactions and as a result has remained mostly unexplored. The nuclei of interest, very neutron-rich isotopes around Z = 70–95, will be produced by multi-nucleon exchange of a high intensity 10 MeV/u heavy-ion beam on the most neutron-rich stable isotopes of heavy elements such as 198 Pt and 238 U . This reaction mechanism can transfer a large number of neutrons and create very neutron-rich isotopes with larger than mb cross-section. The reaction mechanism is a nuclear surface process and the reaction products come out close to the grazing angle, which makes them very difficult to collect. The N = 126 factory circumvents this difficulty by using a unique large high-intensity RF gas catcher, similar to the one currently in operation at CARIBU, to collect the target-like reaction products and transform them into a low-energy beam that will then be mass separated with a medium resolution electromagnetic separator ( Δ M/M ≃ 1/1500), followed by an RFQ buncher and an MR-TOF ( Δ M/M ≃ 1/100,000) system. The extracted radioactive beams will be essentially pure and available at low-energy for mass measurements with the CPT mass spectrometer or decay study with the X-array.

Thermalization of fast ions in a buffer gas provides a method to transform the high-energy, exotic beams produced by projectile fragmentation at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) into low-energy beams. The process includes slowing down the fast exotic beams in solid degraders combined with momentum compression and removal of the remaining kinetic energy by collisions with a buffer gas. The original beam thermalization area for mass measurements at the NSCL was reconfigured to accommodate a new momentum compression beam line, a large radio-frequency (RF) gas catcher constructed by Argonne National Lab and a low-energy beam transport system. A large variety of exotic isotopes produced by projectile fragmentation and selected by the A1900 fragment separator was thermalized in the 1.2 m long gas catcher filled with helium at approximately 100 mbar. The ions were guided to an extraction nozzle with a combination of electrostatic and RF potentials and ejected by the gas flow. A novel RF ion guide was used in a differential pumping system to remove the helium and transport the ions into ultrahigh vacuum. Finally, the ions were accelerated to 30 kV for transport to various experiments. The distribution of the thermalized ions among chemical adducts is one of the operational challenges. The important steps implemented to minimize the production of the chemical adducts in the gas catcher are discussed. The operational status of the facility and some example results from characterization of the gas catcher operation with 37 K and 47 K beams are presented.

For the past two decades the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer (CPT) has been utilized to study various disciplines of nuclear physics through precision mass measurements. Since moving to the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility, the CPT experimental program has focused on neutron-rich nuclei whose masses may play an important role in the astrophysical r process. Through a recent upgrade of the detector system, the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance (PI-ICR) technique has been successfully implemented. This method offers several benefits which drastically improve the experimental sensitivity of the CPT to the most neutron-rich nuclei produced at CARIBU. Here we describe the PI-ICR procedure at the CPT, give an overview of the systematic sources of uncertainty in the system, and provide new mass results for 142I, 146La, and 163Gd which were made possible through this upgrade.

Two long-standing puzzles in the decay of ^{185}Bi, the heaviest known proton-emitting nucleus are revisited. These are the nonobservation of the 9/2^{-} state, which is the ground state of all heavier odd-A Bi isotopes, and the hindered nature of proton and α decays of its presumed 60-μs 1/2^{+} ground state. The ^{185}Bi nucleus has now been studied with the ^{95}Mo(^{93}Nb,3n) reaction in complementary experiments using the Fragment Mass Analyzer and Argonne Gas-Filled Analyzer at Argonne National Laboratory's ATLAS facility. The experiments have established the existence of two states in ^{185}Bi; the short-lived T_{1/2}=2.8_{-1.0}^{+2.3} μs, proton- and α-decaying ground state, and a 58(2)-μs γ-decaying isomer, the half-life of which was previously attributed to the ground state. The reassignment of the ground-state lifetime results in a proton-decay spectroscopic factor close to unity and represents the only known example of a ground-state proton decay to a daughter nucleus (^{184}Pb) with a major shell closure. The data also demonstrate that the ordering of low- and high-spin states in ^{185}Bi is reversed relative to the heavier odd-A Bi isotopes, with the intruder-based 1/2^{+} configuration becoming the ground, similar to the lightest At nuclides.

The Standard Model of physics provides a description of matter in the universe, but fails to reproduce many unexplained features, such as neutrino oscillations and the matter-antimatter asymmetry. One avenue to constrain physics beyond the Standard Model is via the precise determination of the V ud matrix element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix from the ft-value of superallowed mixed beta-decay transitions. Such tests however require the determination of the Fermi to Gamow-Teller mixing ratio, which is currently unknown for all but five mixed mirror transition nuclei. At the University of Notre Dame a project is underway to develop a Paul trap devoted to the measurement of this elusive quantity. The design and goals will be presented.

The $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}+^{12}\mathrm{C}$ fusion reaction was used to perform a detailed $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy study of the astrophysically important nucleus $^{34}\mathrm{Ar}$. In particular, an experimental setup, coupling the advanced $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray tracking array GRETINA with the well-established Argonne fragment mass analyzer (FMA), was employed to obtain excitation energies and spin-parity assignments for excited states in $^{34}\mathrm{Ar}$, both above and below the proton separation energy. For the first time, an angular distribution analysis of in-beam $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays from fusion-evaporation reactions, using a tracking array, has been performed and Coulomb energy differences of analog states in the $T=1,$ $A=34$ mirror system, explored from 0 to 6 MeV. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive discussion of the astrophysical $^{33}\mathrm{Cl}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})$ stellar reaction rate, together with implications for the identification of nova presolar grains from sulfur isotopic abundances.

The ground-state properties of neutron-rich $^{106}\mathrm{Nb}$ and its $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay into $^{106}\mathrm{Mo}$ have been studied using the CARIBU radioactive-ion-beam facility at Argonne National Laboratory. Niobium-106 ions were extracted from a $^{252}\mathrm{Cf}$ fission source and mass separated before being delivered as low-energy beams to the Canadian Penning Trap, as well as the X-Array and SATURN $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay-spectroscopy station. The measured $^{106}\mathrm{Nb}$ ground-state mass excess of $\ensuremath{-}66202.0(13)$ keV is consistent with a recent measurement but has three times better precision; this work also rules out the existence of a second long-lived, $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decaying state in $^{106}\mathrm{Nb}$ above 5 keV in excitation energy. The decay half-life of $^{106}\mathrm{Nb}$ was measured to be 1.097(21) s, which is $8%$ longer than the adopted value. The level scheme of the decay progeny, $^{106}\mathrm{Mo}$, has been expanded up to $\ensuremath{\approx}4\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$. The distribution of decay strength and considerable population of excited states in $^{106}\mathrm{Mo}$ of $J\ensuremath{\ge}3$ emphasizes the need to revise the adopted ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={1}_{}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ground-state spin-parity assignment of $^{106}\mathrm{Nb}$; it is more likely to be $J\ensuremath{\ge}3$.

The observation of enhanced octupole collectivity in Ba144,146 as measured in sub-barrier Coulomb excitation, consistent with static octupole deformation, has further heightened this interest. In the present work, these studies are extended to the neighboring odd-mass Ba143 to investigate the interplay between single-particle and collective octupole degrees of freedom. A new measurement of the first 92 - state lifetime is also presented. Reflection-Asymmetric Triaxial Particle Rotor Model calculations indicate that the negative-parity bands in Ba143 can be understood as a decoupled structure of νh9/2 parentage, while the positive-parity bands are built on a decoupled octupole phonon. No evidence for E3 excitation is observed in this work, but an upper limit is placed on the E3 matrix element to the lowest octupole band.

Masses of neutron-rich, odd-odd Pm, Eu, and Tb nuclei near $N=98$ were measured using the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer at the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility. High-resolution mass measurements yielded the discovery of spin-trap isomers at $N=97$ in $^{162}\mathrm{Tb}$, and in the $N=99$ isotones of $^{160}\mathrm{Pm}$ and $^{164}\mathrm{Tb}$. Furthermore, no evidence of long-lived isomers were observed at $N=95$ in $^{158}\mathrm{Eu}$, at $N=97$ in $^{158}\mathrm{Pm}$, nor at $N=101$ in $^{164}\mathrm{Eu}$ and $^{166}\mathrm{Tb}$. These experimental observations are compared to results from multiquasiparticle blocking calculations.

Excited states in $^{160}\mathrm{Gd}$ were populated via $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay from the low- and high-spin isomers in $^{160}\mathrm{Eu}$. The high-spin, ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={5}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state feeds several two-quasiparticle levels, as well as a sequence associated with a $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ vibration and a ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={4}^{+}$, hexadecapole vibrational structure. The decay scheme was significantly improved with the observation of new transitions and states when compared with the two competing level schemes from over four decades ago. Configuration assignments for some of the multiquasiparticle levels have been suggested, based upon decay properties, systematics from neighboring nuclei, and comparisons with theoretical calculations. In addition, 15 new low-spin states and approximately 60 new transitions were observed resulting from the decay of the low-spin $^{160}\mathrm{Eu}$ isomer.

A detailed study of the $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed neutron emission properties of $^{137,138}\mathrm{I}$ and $^{144,145}\mathrm{Cs}$ has been performed by confining ions in the Beta-decay Paul Trap. The daughter ions following $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay emerge from the trapped-ion cloud with negligible scattering allowing reconstruction of the recoil-ion energy from the time of flight. From this information, the neutron-emission branching ratios and neutron-energy spectra were deduced. The results for the $^{137}\mathrm{I}$ and $^{144,145}\mathrm{Cs}$ decays are in agreement with previous results performed using direct neutron-detection techniques. In the case of $^{138}\mathrm{I}$, a branching ratio of 6.18(50)% is obtained, yielding a value consistent with the more recent results, which are a factor of two larger than measurements made prior to 1978.

Beta-delayed-neutron ($\ensuremath{\beta}n$) spectroscopy was performed using the Beta-decay Paul Trap and an array of radiation detectors. The $\ensuremath{\beta}n$ branching ratios and energy spectra for $^{135,136}\mathrm{Sb}$ and $^{140}\mathrm{I}$ were obtained by measuring the time of flight of recoil ions emerging from the trapped ion cloud. These nuclei are located at the edge of an isotopic region identified as having $\ensuremath{\beta}n$ branching ratios that impact the $r$-process abundance pattern around the $A\ensuremath{\approx}130$ peak. For $^{135,136}\mathrm{Sb}$ and $^{140}\mathrm{I}, \ensuremath{\beta}n$ branching ratios of $14.6(13)%, 17.6(29)%$, and $7.6(28)%$ were determined, respectively. The $\ensuremath{\beta}n$ energy spectra obtained for $^{135}\mathrm{Sb}$ and $^{140}\mathrm{I}$ are compared with results from direct neutron measurements, and the $\ensuremath{\beta}n$ energy spectrum for $^{136}\mathrm{Sb}$ has been measured for the first time.

Beta-delayed neutron emission is being studied by detecting the β particles and recoiling ions emerging from the Beta-decay Paul Trap. For β decays to the ground state or γ -emitting states of the daughter nucleus, the fraction of recoiling ions which reach the ion detector in coincidence with a β particle has been determined for 134, 135Sb, 137, 138, 140I, and 144, 145Cs. This value is needed for the determination of the β -delayed neutron emission branching ratio solely from the recoil-ion time-of-flight (TOF) spectrum. The β -particle energy and recoil-ion TOF spectra were used to constrain a simple decay model, which can be used to determine the detection efficiency. The method is compared to simulations to estimate the uncertainty introduced by incomplete knowledge of the decay pattern. By fitting the simulation results to several β -ion coincidence properties measured during the experiment, the fraction of ions which reach the microchannel plate detector can be determined to within ± 4 % . This result opens the possibility of using the recoil-ion TOF spectra for high precision β -delayed neutron branching-ratio measurements.

This article presents an approach to calibrate the energy response of double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSDs) for low-energy nuclear-science experiments by utilizing cosmic-ray muons . For the 1-mm-thick detectors used with the Beta-decay Paul Trap, the minimum-ionizing peak from these muons provides a stable and time-independent in situ calibration point at around 300 keV, which supplements the calibration data obtained above 3 MeV from α sources. The muon-data calibration is achieved by comparing experimental spectra with detailed Monte Carlo simulations performed using GEANT4 and CRY codes. This additional information constrains the calibration at lower energies, resulting in improvements in quality and accuracy.

Beta-delayed one-neutron ( β n ) emission has been investigated by confining radioactive ions in an ion trap and detecting the β particles and recoiling nuclei that emerge following decay. In this approach, the β n energy spectrum and branching ratio can be deduced without needing to detect the neutrons, as the neutron emission is inferred from the observed time of flight of the recoiling ions. This paper details the dominant effects that influence the extraction of the neutron energy from the time-of-flight measurement and explores the impact they have on the energy calibration and resolution.

For many fission products, the γ rays emitted following β decay provide an easily-detectable signature that can be used to identify their quantities and distributions in a sample. As a result, γ -ray spectroscopy is often exploited to study fission-product yields, provided sufficiently accurate information on the γ -ray intensity is available. However, in many cases, the uncertainties in the existing nuclear data are large enough that they compromise the precision achievable for modern experiments and applications. To address this need, we have developed a new experimental method that is well suited to precisely measure absolute γ -ray intensities in the β decay of long-lived fission products. The approach involves the production of a radiopure sample by implantation of a mass-separated ion beam from the CAlifornium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility on a thin carbon foil. The emitted β -decay radiation is detected with a 4 π gas proportional counter and a meticulously efficiency-calibrated high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. As a first measurement to demonstrate the approach, we studied the absolute γ -ray intensities of the strongest transitions following the β decay of 95 Zr and its decay-daughter 95 Nb, and determined them to fractional precisions of better than 1–2%. In addition, with a larger sample of activity produced through neutron irradiation of an isotopically-enriched Zr foil, we performed a high-precision measurement of the relative γ -ray intensities following the decay of 95 Zr with just the HPGe detector. The sample-production method at CARIBU and the coincidence detection approach demonstrated here can be applied to study fission products with half-lives longer than a day, which includes isotopes important not only for nuclear-energy and national-security applications, but also for medical-isotope research and environmental monitoring.

Over the last decade, the Low-Energy Nuclear Physics (LENP) and Nuclear Astrophysics (NAP) communities have increasingly organized themselves in order to take a coherent approach to resolving the challenges they face. As a result, there is a high level of optimism in view of the unprecedented opportunities for substantial progress. In preparation of the 2015 US Nuclear Science Long Range Plan (LRP), the two American Physical Society Division of Nuclear Physics town meetings on LENP and NAP were held jointly on August 21–23, 2014, at Texas A&M, College Station, in Texas. These meetings were co-organized to take advantage of the strong synergy between the two fields. The present White Paper attempts to communicate the sense of great anticipation and enthusiasm that came out of these meetings. A unanimously endorsed set of joint resolutions condensed from the individual recommendations of the two town meetings were agreed upon. The present LENP White Paper discusses the above and summarizes in detail for each of the sub-fields within low-energy nuclear physics, the major accomplishments since the last LRP, the compelling near-term and long-term scientific opportunities plus the resources needed to achieve these goals, along with the scientific impact on, and interdisciplinary connections to, other fields.

Tests of the unitarity of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Masakawa (CKM) matrix offer an important avenue for constraining the Standard Model of the electroweak interaction. Several methods are currently used to determine Vud, the largest element in the top-row normalization test. One such method is through the study of superallowed T = 1/2 mixed mirror transitions, which offers a complementary method to the current most-precise value that is determined from superallowed pure Fermi 0+ → 0+ transitions. The precision currently achievable by this method is currently limited by the very low number of transitions for which the Fermi-to-Gamow-Teller mixing ratio ρ has been measured. St. Benedict, the Superallowed Transition Beta-Neutrino Decay-Ion-Coincidence Trap, is currently under development at the University of Notre Dame’s Nuclear Science Laboratory, and intends to determine ρ for a range of new isotopes through measurements of the β-neutrino asymmetry parameter aβν using a linear Paul trap. In order to trap these ions, the fast, continuous secondary beam separated by the TwinSol twin solenoid separator must be thermalized and bunched. The system through which this will be done will feature a large-volume gas cell in which the ions will be thermalized, a double-RF-funnel-based ion guide system for the extraction of the ions, and a radiofrequency quadrupole (RFQ) to provide cooled ion bunches for capture in the Paul trap.

The Beta-decay Paul Trap (BPT) at Argonne National Laboratory has proven to be an extremely effective tool for high-precision tests of the Standard Model via measurements of the β − ν correlation in mass-8 isotopes. Using four double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSDs) backed by plastic scintillators and surrounding the ions confined by the BPT, the kinematics of the decays of the mirror nuclei lithium-8 and boron-8 are overdetermined when all charged decay products are measured. The most stringent low-energy limit on an intrinsic tensor current in the weak interaction was set using the BPT in 2015 (Sternberg, M.G., et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 182501 2015) utilizing trapped lithium-8. Since then, similar data for boron-8 and higher statistics data for lithium-8 have been collected and are currently being analyzed. With the elimination of radio-frequency (RF) pickup from the DSSDs and a detailed investigation of experimental systematic errors, the uncertainty is now dominated by the contribution from recoil-order terms in the decay rate. Our eventual goal is to limit tensor currents in the weak interaction with relative precision at or below 0.1%.

Spectroscopic data, such as precise γ-ray branching and E2/M1 multipole-mixing ratios, provide vital constraints when performing multi-dimensional Coulomb-excitation analyses. Consequently, as part of our new Coulomb-excitation campaign aimed at investigating the role of exotic non-axial (triaxial) deformations in the unstable refractory Ru-Mo isotopes, additional beta-decay data was obtained. These measurements make use of ANL’s CARIBU facility, which provides intense beams of radioactive refractory isotopes along with the excellent efficiency and angular resolution of the GRETINA γ-ray tracking array. In this article, we report on the analysis of the A = 110 decay chain, focussing on the identification of previously unreported states in 110Ru following the decay of 110Tc.

The CARIBU upgrade of the ATLAS facility provides radioactive beams of neutron-rich isotopes for experiments at low and Coulomb barrier energies. It creates these beam using a large RF gas catcher that collects and cools fission fragments from an intense 252 Cf fission source and transforms them into a low-emittance monoenergetic beam. This beam can then be purified, reaccelerated and delivered to experiments. This technique is fast and universal, providing access to all fission fragment species independently of their chemical properties. The CARIBU gas catcher has been built to operate at high ionization density and in the presence of the contamination from the source. A brief overview of the CARIBU concept is given below, together with a more detailed description of the CARIBU gas catcher and the performance it has now achieved.

The recent installation of a Multi-Reflection Time-of-Flight (MR-TOF) isobar separator at the CARIBU facility has the promising potential to significantly improve the mass separation and selection of short-lived neutron-rich beams. Ions cycled in the km-long isochronous trajectories between two electrostatic mirrors can be separated to high levels of mass-resolving power within a short time (tens of ms). The installation process is described and results from the first operation are discussed. Following an optimization of the mirror voltages a mass-resolving power of 6.8 · 10 4 was achieved and a separation of isobars was demonstrated. The higher purity beams provided by the MR-TOF and delivered to the Canadian Penning Trap (CPT) will provide access to further measurements of neutron-rich nuclei along the astrophysical r-process path.

There is a growing understanding of how oil pollution can affect aquatic ecosystems, including physical and chemical effects. One of the biggest challenges with detecting the effects of oil-related contaminants on biota from resource development is understanding the background levels and potential effects of the exposure of biota to contaminants from various natural and anthropogenic sources prior to large scale oil and gas operations. Seabirds are effective indicators of pollution, and can be useful for tracking oil-related contaminants in the marine environment. We sampled four seabird species (black guillemot, Cepphus grylle; thick-billed murre, Uria lomvia; black-legged kittiwake, Rissa tridactyla; and northern fulmar, Fulmarus glacialis) in the Baffin Bay-Davis Strait region of the Northwest Atlantic and Arctic oceans, an area where natural oil and gas seeps are present but lacking any large-scale oil and gas projects. We found detectable levels of PACs and several trace elements in all species examined. Alkylated PAC levels were higher than parent compounds in all four seabird species examined, with fulmars and murres having the highest levels detected; mean hepatic concentrations of ∑16PAC were 99.05, 46.42, 12.78 and 9.57 ng/g lw, respectively, for guillemots, murres, fulmars and kittiwakes. Overall, PAC concentrations in the seabird species examined were similar to PAC concentrations measured in other bird species in regions with more industrialization. These findings provide data which can be used to assess the current oil-related contaminant exposure of biota in the region. As well, they provide background levels for the region at a time when shipping activity is relatively low, which can used for future comparisons following expected increases in shipping and oil and gas activities in the region.

The Californium Rare Ion Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) project utilizes 252Cf to provide beams of neutron-rich nuclides with intensities not currently available at other facilities. The electroplated 252Cf source is positioned inside a large helium gas catcher, where the ejected fission fragments lose their energy and are slowed. Prior to entering this gas catcher, the ions first pass through a gold cover foil to contain self-sputtering recoil emissions and then through an aluminium degrader foil, where much of their residual energy is reduced. In the past due to production limitations, a less than ideal cylindrical shaped degrader was utilized. This resulted in non-uniform energy loss as the ions passed through the degrader. With the advent of 3D printing, a new hemispherical degrader was prepared to enable a more uniform energy loss. The design, production, and assembly will be discussed.

© 2018 American Physical Society. An experiment was performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's 88-in. Cyclotron to determine the mass number of a superheavy element. The measurement resulted in the observation of two α-decay chains, produced via the Am243(Ca48,xn)291-xMc reaction, that were separated by mass-to-charge ratio (A/q) and identified by the combined BGS+FIONA apparatus. One event occurred at A/q=284 and was assigned to Nh284 (Z=113), the α-decay daughter of Mc288 (Z=115), while the second occurred at A/q=288 and was assigned to Mc288. This experiment represents the first direct measurements of the mass numbers of superheavy elements, confirming previous (indirect) mass-number assignments.

As zirconium gains neutrons, its nucleus morphs in shape---changing from a soccer ball to an American football---and researchers have found the exact moment of the transition.

The structure of deformed neutron-rich nuclei in the rare-earth region is of significant interest for both the astrophysics and nuclear structure fields. At present, a complete explanation for the observed peak in the elemental abundances at $A\ensuremath{\sim}160$ eludes astrophysicists, and models depend on accurate quantities, such as masses, lifetimes, and branching ratios of deformed neutron-rich nuclei in this region. Unusual nuclear structure effects are also observed, such as the unexpectedly low energies of the first ${2}^{+}$ levels in some even-even nuclei at $N=98$. In order to address these issues, mass and $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay spectroscopy measurements of the $^{160}{\mathrm{Eu}}_{97}$ and $^{162}{\mathrm{Eu}}_{99}$ nuclei were performed at the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade radioactive beam facility at Argonne National Laboratory. Evidence for a gap in the single-particle neutron energies at $N=98$ and for large deformation (${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{2}\ensuremath{\sim}0.3$) is discussed in relation to the unusual phenomena observed at this neutron number.

The low-energy recoiling ions from the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of $^{134}\mathrm{Sb}$ were studied by using the Beta-decay Paul Trap. Using this apparatus, singly charged ions were suspended in vacuum at the center of a detector array used to detect emitted $\ensuremath{\beta}$ particles, $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays, and recoil ions in coincidence. The recoil ions emerge from the trap with negligible scattering, allowing $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay properties and the charge-state distribution of the daughter ions to be determined from the $\ensuremath{\beta}$-ion coincidences. First-forbidden $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay theory predicts a $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\nu}$ correlation coefficient of nearly unity for the ${0}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ to ${0}^{+}$ transition from the ground state of $^{134}\mathrm{Sb}$ to the ground state of $^{134}\mathrm{Te}$. Although this transition was expected to have a nearly 100% branching ratio, an additional 17.2(52)% of the $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay strength must populate high-lying excited states to obtain an angular correlation consistent with unity. The extracted charge-state distribution of the recoiling ions was compared with existing $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay results and the average charge state was found to be consistent with the results from lighter nuclei.

The Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer at the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility was used to measure the masses of eight neutron-rich isotopes of Nd and Sm. These measurements are the first to push into the region of nuclear masses relevant to the formation of the rare-earth abundance peak at $A\ensuremath{\sim}165$ by the rapid neutron-capture process. We compare our results with theoretical predictions obtained from ``reverse engineering'' the mass surface that best reproduces the observed solar abundances in this region through a Markov chain Monte Carlo technique. Our measured masses are consistent with the reverse-engineering predictions for a neutron star merger wind scenario.

A centrifugal cryogenic pump has been designed at Argonne National Laboratory to circulate liquid nitrogen (LN2) in a closed circuit allowing the recovery of excess fluid. The pump can circulate LN2 at rates of 2–10 L/min, into a head of 0.5–3 m. Over four years of laboratory use the pump has proven capable of operating continuously for 50–100 days without maintenance.

The region of neutron-rich nuclei above the N = 50 magic neutron shell closure encompasses a rich variety of nuclear structure, especially shapeevolutionary phenomena. This can be attributed to the complexity of sub-shell closures, their appearance and disappearance in the region, such as the N = 56 sub shell or Z = 40 for protons. Structural effects reach from a shape phase transition in the Zr isotopes, over shape coexistence between spherical, prolate, and oblate shapes, to possibly rigid triaxial deformation. Recent experiments in this region and their main physics viewpoints are summarized.

The octupole strength present in the neutron-rich, radiocative nucleus $^{146}$Ba has been experimentally determined for the first time using Coulomb excitation. To achieve this, $A$=146 fission fragments from CARIBU were post-accelerated by the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) and impinged on a thin $^{208}$Pb target. Using the GRETINA $\gamma$-ray spectrometer and the CHICO2 heavy-ion counter, the reduced transition probability $B(E3;3^-$$\rightarrow$$0^+)$ was determined as 48($^{+21}_{-29}$) W.u. The new result provides further experimental evidence for the presence of a region of octupole deformation surrounding the neutron-rich barium isotopes.

Despite the more than 1 order of magnitude difference between the measured dipole moments in ^{144}Ba and ^{146}Ba, the octupole correlations in ^{146}Ba are found to be as strong as those in ^{144}Ba with a similarly large value of B(E3;3^{-}→0^{+}) determined as 48(+21-29) W.u. The new results not only establish unambiguously the presence of a region of octupole deformation centered on these neutron-rich Ba isotopes, but also manifest the dependence of the electric dipole moments on the occupancy of different neutron orbitals in nuclei with enhanced octupole strength, as revealed by fully microscopic calculations.

We propose to determine the nuclear charge radius of 8B by high-resolution laser spectroscopy. 8B (t 1/2 = 770 ms) is perhaps the best candidate of a nucleus exhibiting an extended proton wave-function or “one-proton-halo” in a more descriptive picture. Laser spectroscopic measurements of the isotope shift will be used to probe the change in nuclear charge radius along the three boron isotopes 8B, 10B and 11B. The change in nuclear charge radius directly correlates with the extent of the proton wave function. In-flight production and preparation of sufficient yields of 8B ions at low energies is provided by the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in Chicago, IL, USA. Subsequently, the ions will be guided through a charge exchange cell for neutralization and the fluorescence signal of the atoms which interact with the resonant laser light will be detected. The charge radius can then be extracted from the measured isotope shift by employing highly accurate atomic theory calculations of this five-electron system which are carried out presently.

International audience; A multi-step Coulomb excitation measurement with the GRETINA and CHICO2 detector arrays was carried out with a 430-MeV beam of the neutron-rich $^{110}$Ru (t$_{1/2}$= 12 s) isotope produced at the CARIBU facility. This represents the first successful measurement following the post-acceleration of an unstable isotope of a refractory element. The reduced transition probabilities obtained for levels near the ground state provide strong evidence for a triaxial shape; a conclusion confirmed by comparisons with the results of beyond-mean-field and triaxial rotor model calculations.

Experiments to determine the stopping and extraction efficiency of energetic (90 MeV/u) 76Ga fragments in a 1.2 m long gas cell filled with helium at 123 mbar are reported. The thermalized ions were transported by DC and RF fields as well as gas flow, then jetted through a supersonic nozzle into a RF quadrupole ion-guide and accelerated into an electrostatic beam line. The ions were collected in either a Faraday cup or a silicon beta-detector immediately after acceleration or after magnetic analysis. The range distributions of the ions and extraction efficiency of the system were measured for different implantation rates and compared with the theoretically calculated values. The singly charged 76Ga ions were observed as [76Ga(H2O)n]+ molecular ions with n=0, 1, and 2. The stopping efficiency and the extraction efficiency were obtained from the measured distributions and compared to previous results from other devices.

A new approach to β-delayed neutron spectroscopy has been demonstrated that circumvents the many limitations associated with neutron detection by instead inferring the decay branching ratios and energy spectra of the emitted neutrons by studying the nuclear recoil. Using the Beta-decay Paul Trap, fission-product ions were trapped and confined to within a 1 -mm 3 volume under vacuum using only electric fields. Results from recent measurements of 137 I + and plans for development of a dedicated ion trap for future experiments using the intense fission fragment beams from the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility at Argonne National Laboratory are summarized. The improved nuclear data that can be collected is needed in many fields of basic and applied science such as nuclear energy, nuclear astrophysics, and stockpile stewardship.

Properties of neutron-rich nuclei in the A˜160 region are important for achieving a better understanding of the nuclear structure in this region where little is known owing to diffculties in the production of these nuclei at the present nuclear physics facilities. These properties are essential ingredients in the interpretation of the rareearth peak at A˜160 in the r process abundance distribution, since theoretical models are sensitive to nuclear structure input. Predicated on these ideas, we have initiated a new experimental program at Argonne National Laboratory. During the first experiment, beams from the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade radioactive beam facility were used in conjunction with the SATURN decay station and the X-array. We focused initially on several odd-odd nuclei, where β decays of both the ground state and an excited isomer were investigated. Because of the spin difference, a variety of structures in the daughter nuclei were selectively populated and characterized based on their decay properties. Mass measurements using the Canadian Penning Trap aimed at establishing the excitation energy of the β-decaying isomers were also carried out. Evidence was found for a change in the single-particle structure, which in turn results in the formation of a sizable N=98 sub-shell gap at large deformation. Results from the first experimental campaign using the newly-commissioned β-decay station at Gammasphere are also presented.

Half of the elements heavier than iron (Z > 26) are thought to be created through the astrophysical r process, whereby nuclides are produced via a rapid series of nuclear reactions that are postulated to occur in high temperature and neutron density environments such as supernovae or merging neutron stars. The nucleosynthetic path that describes the sequence of reactions through the chart of nuclides strongly depends on the neutron-separation energies of the nuclei. Until recently, however, almost all of these neutron-rich nuclei were not within reach of accelerator facilities, and therefore simulations of the r process had to rely on mass models for input into the calculations. Now, with the advent of facilities such as CARIBU at Argonne National Laboratory, the masses of many nuclides along the r-process path can be determined precisely with Penning trap mass spectrometers coupled to these facilities. More than 70 nuclides have been measured with the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer alone in the past year, which overlap and complement results from other Penning trap mass spectrometers, and first calculations with these new masses suggest the timescale of the r process through the tin isotopes is delayed much more strongly than mass models would suggest.
