As technology evolves, the contemporary technological paradigm of manufacturing Small and Medium Enterprises (SME’s) has been changing and gaining traction to accommodate its ever-growing needs for adaptation to modern industrial processes and standards. Their willingness to integrate Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) modules in their manufacturing processes and to implement Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) is firmly based on the perception that value added services result from the technological evolution and, in the future, better tools are expected to guarantee process control, surveillance and maintenance. These Intelligent Systems involve transdisciplinary approaches to guarantee interaction and behavioural fluidity between hardware and software components which often leads to complexity in the coordination of these components and processes. The main objective of this work is to study these aspects and to contribute with data regarding the applicability of CPS components in the current SME’s environment with the intent of improving the performance of manufacturing processes. To accomplish this, an architecture is proposed, which is based in the process modelling and process simulation of the different stages of an existing SME factory production, allowing real-time information, through IoT data collection, to feed different mechanisms of production improvement modules such as planning, scheduling and monitoring. Since SME’s are the most active and common company profile in the northern part of Portugal, it seemed beneficial to take part in this environment, by implementing the solution in a promising cutlery producing SME, with the objective of investigate and validate the applicability of the BEinCPPS components, within the proposed architecture, to improve the performance of the company industrial processes.

International audience; To keep up to date, manufacturing enterprises need to use the latest results from the ICT sector, especially when collaborating with external partners in a supply chain and exchanging products and data. This has led to dealing with an increasing amount of heterogeneous information exchanged between partners including machines (physical means), humans and IT in the Supply Chain of ICT Systems (SC-ICTS). In this context, interoperability management is becoming more and more critical, but paradoxically, it is not yet fully efficiently anticipated, controlled and accompanied to recover from incompatibilities issues or failures. This paper intends to present how enterprise modeling, enterprise interoperability and model driven approaches can lead, together with system engineering architecture, to contribute to developing and improving the interoperability in the SC-ICTs. Model Driven System Engineering Architecture (MDSEA) is based on Enterprise Modeling using GRAI Model and its extensions. It gives enterprise internal developments guidelines, but originally, MDSEA is not the considering interoperability that is required between partners when setting a collaboration in the frame of SC-ICTS. As a result, the MDSEA, extended with interoperability concerns, led to the design of the MDISE (Model Driven Interoperability System Engineering) framework, which capitalizes on the research on enterprise interoperability. To finish, some proposals are made to extend the Model System Tool Box (MSTB) and the use of MDISE for Cyber Physical System (CPS) that are relevant components of SC-ICTS.

For this purpose, since improving the product or service performancecan reach some limits, one potential solution is to move towards new combinations of products andservices. This evolution, called servitization, leads to the generation of Product Service Systems (PSS).Servitization requires not only a clear understanding of enterprise core business, but also a clear visionof the prevailing trends and challenges of PSS development from both the business and technologicalpoints of view. In addition, the evolution path should be aligned with the enterprise strategy.This paper first highlights the notion of symbiotic PSS where product systems and service systems,and their stakeholders, interoperate seamlessly based on a win-win approach. Then, it proposes aPSS Conceptual Framework (PSS-CF), which can be applied in the early stages of servitization toincrease the understating of PSS dimensions and to facilitate the prioritization of the servitizationinvestments. The framework dimensions were discussed in several iterations, from both the academicand industrial points of view, in the frame of a European research project. Moreover, the applicabilityof the framework was studied in four different industrial use-cases.
