Abstract

The present study sought to determine if inequities exist in Hispanic women's pregnancy intentions and birth outcomes by metropolitan status. In the U.S. pregnancy intentions and birth outcomes of young Hispanic women are a significant public health problem as they are often overlooked on health issues such as pregnancy and childbirth. Data were from the 2015 to 2019 National Survey of Family Growth and focused on the first pregnancies of Hispanic women aged 18 to 24 years old who were not pregnant at the time of the interview and answered the nativity question. Multivariable multinomial regression was used to evaluate how metropolitan status affects pregnancy intentions and birth outcomes. Additionally, multivariable multinomial regression was used to evaluate how metropolitan status affects each pregnancy intention-birth outcome combination. There was no significant association solely between metropolitan status and pregnancy intention (i.e. unintended pregnancy). Metropolitan Hispanic women reported more miscarriages than live births. Hispanic women in the suburbs were more likely to miscarry during an intended pregnancy than those in urban. These findings can improve family planning services for rural women by identifying the specific factors that affect pregnancy intentions and developing targeted interventions to reduce unintended pregnancies. Abstract

The decisions animals make to adjust their antipredator behavior to rapidly changing conditions have been well studied. Inducible defenses in plants are an antipredator behavior that acts on a longer time scale, but sensitive plants, Mimosa pudica, have a much more rapid antipredator response; they temporarily close their leaves when touched. The time they remain closed is defined as hiding time. We studied hiding time in sensitive plants and found that individual plants differed significantly in their hiding times. We then showed that the effect of individual explained substantial variation in hiding time on a short time scale. Finally, on a longer time scale, individuality persisted but the amount of variation attributed to individual decreased. We hypothesized that variation in plant condition might explain this change. We therefore manipulated sunlight availability and quantified hiding time. When deprived of light for 6 h, sensitive plants significantly shortened their hiding times. But when only half a plant was deprived of light, hiding times on the deprived half and light exposed half were not significantly different. This suggests that overall condition best explains variation in sensitive plant antipredator behavior. Just like in animals, sensitive plant antipredator behavior is condition dependent, and, just like in animals, a substantial amount of the remaining variation is explained by individual differences between plants. Thus, models designed to predict plasticity in animal behavior may be successfully applied to understand behavior in other organisms, including plants.

11. Inspiring a STEMester of Service

Abstract

For the past two years, eighth graders at Lincoln Middle School have been participating in the STEMester of Service program, which uses the science, math, and language arts curricula to help students improve the environment. More than 70% of Lincoln students receive free and reduced-price lunch, and the school is diverse because it hosts the district's newcomer and international student program. A structured semester of service learning provides teacher preparation and support. Students work across disciplines to identify and contribute to solutions for a local environmental problem. Through the STEMester of Service, students, teachers, and community partners implement high-quality service learning not only to "green" their schools and communities but also to increase student engagement and achievement. Teachers encourage students' interest in their communities by giving them a voice and teaching them how they can make a difference. And as a result of their study and service, students develop their leadership and academic skills.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Procedural complications in thrombectomy for large vessel occlusions of the anterior circulation are not well described. We investigated the incidence, risk factors, and clinical implications of thrombectomy complications in daily clinical practice. Methods: We used data from the ongoing prospective multicenter observational Endovascular Treatment in Ischemic Stroke Registry in France. The present study is a retrospective analysis of 4029 stroke patients with anterior large vessel occlusions treated with thrombectomy between January 2015 and May 2020 in 18 centers. We systematically collected procedural data, incidence of embolic complications, perforations and dissections, clinical outcome at 90 days, and hemorrhagic complications. Results: Procedural complications occurred in 7.99% (95% CI, 7.17%–8.87%), and embolus to a new territory (ENT) was the most frequent (5.2%). Predictors of ENTs were terminal carotid/tandem occlusion (odds ratio [OR], 5 [95% CI, 2.03–12.31]; P P =0.006). ENTs were associated to worse clinical outcomes (90-day modified Rankin Scale score, 0–2; adjusted OR, 0.4 [95% CI, 0.25–0.63]; P P P =0.011). Perforations occurred in 1.69% (95% CI, 1.31%–2.13%). Predictors of perforations were terminal carotid/tandem occlusions (39.7% versus 27.6%; P =0.028). 40.7% of patients died at 90 days, and the overall rate of poor outcome was 74.6% in case of perforation. Dissections occurred in 1.46% (95% CI, 1.11%–1.88%) and were more common in younger patients (median age, 64.2 versus 70.2 years; P =0.002). Dissections did not affect the clinical outcome at 90 days. Besides dissection, complications were independent of the thrombectomy technique. Conclusions: Thrombectomy complication rate is not negligible, and ENTs were the most frequent. ENTs and perforations were associated with disability and mortality, and terminal carotid/tandem occlusions were a risk factor. 19. Streaming Media Collection in A Changing Environment: A Content Analysis of Academic Library Collection Development Policies

Abstract

Although most academic libraries offer at least some streaming video, not all collection development policies address streaming video collections. Many policies, however, place an emphasis on electronic collections over their physical counterparts. They also write about preservation of electronic materials, including streaming video. Many policies reflect that their libraries take advantage of the demand driven acquisition models in use by streaming platform vendors to allow their patrons to decide which videos are licensed. Some libraries also offer to convert their DVD holdings to digital format for distance education. Most library collection development policies prioritize responding to patron requests for materials as well as moving away from collecting obsolete formats, which has driven the rise in streaming media collections. Overall, streaming media in libraries presents many challenges as well as opportunities, and it is far from uniformly practiced in academic libraries.

We examined the processing locus (location vs. response) of location repetition effects in terms of the event [target (t) or distractor (d)] that initially occupied and then re-occupied the repeated location (i.e., t-to-t, t-to-d, d-to-t, d-to-d). Trials were presented in pairs (prime, then probe) and 2:1 location-to-response mappings were used. Generally, for all repetition conditions, perceptual processing at the repeated location itself was facilitated (location locus), while re-activated responses delayed output production (response locus). More specifically, perceptual facilitation observed for a repeated location was independent of the kind of processing (i.e., t or d) that occurred earlier, suggesting that it is not the labeling of locations as relevant or irrelevant that determines location repetition effects. Response production was significantly slowed only when a just-inhibited response had then to be executed, which supported the view that the spatial negative priming effect has a response locus. Abstract

Cannibalism can have important demographic and ecological effects on populations. Typically, cannibalism is size-structured, where larger individuals eat smaller conspecifics. Initial cursory observations of the whip spider, Phrynus longipes, however, suggested that cannibalism might not be size-structured in this species, perhaps because cannibalism is often a by-product of territory contests. We staged paired interactions and recorded latency to escalate to physical aggression or cannibalize to understand the dynamics of cannibalism and resource contests. We employed a multimodel comparative approach to tease apart the contest characteristics that best predicted cannibalism during behavioral trials between P. longipes opponents. We found that, while armament size symmetry predicted escalation of contests, cannibalism was best predicted by body mass asymmetry. Further, cannibalism was most likely to occur among individuals similar in armament, but dissimilar in body mass. This suggests a discrepancy between phenotypes that may have evolved to communicate resource holding potential (e.g., armaments which benefit individuals if dishonest), and body mass as a cue of resource holding potential. AbstractThis column reports on fourteen sessions from the Electronic Resources and Libraries 2023 conference and covers four broad subject areas including: artificial intelligence and data mining; open access and scholarly publishing; skills for new electronic resources librarians, and general e-resources management topics. For artificial intelligence, a theoretical examination regarding artificial intelligence robots and what it means to be human is chronicled. A report discusses data mining course catalogs for a recently designated research 1 institution to gain insights on trends in course offerings. In the open access and scholarly publishing topics reports impart information about the importance and reasoning for transformative agreements, perspectives from the humanities on open access, and challenges and successes of the open access model, subscribe to open. Questions to ask, tools, and strategies about the first six months for new e-resources management professionals are also covered. In the general e-resources management area: a database cancellation process totaling $300,000 of resources at University of Northern Iowa is revealed; using a ‘library value playbook’ to align library values with e-resources licenses is described; analyzing master COUNTER reports with Celus to find additional usage statistic insights is shared; a development of an open educational resource to share negotiation skills through the Open Negotiation Education for Academic Libraries (ONEAL) project is announced; and creating a training plan for implementation of FOLIO is communicated.
