Abstract

Madagascar experienced a major faunal turnover near the end of the first millenium CE that particularly affected terrestrial, large-bodied vertebrate species. Teasing apart the relative impacts of people and climate on this event requires a focus on regional records with good chronological control. These records may document coeval changes in rainfall, faunal composition, and human activities. Here we present new paleontological and paleoclimatological data from southwestern Madagascar, the driest part of the island today. We collected over 1500 subfossil bones from deposits at a coastal site called Antsirafaly and from both flooded and dry cave deposits at Tsimanampesotse National Park. We built a chronology of Late Holocene changes in faunal assemblages based on 65 radiocarbon-dated specimens and subfossil associations. We collected stalagmites primarily within Tsimanampesotse but also at two additional locations in southern Madagascar. These provided information regarding hydroclimate variability over the past 120,000 years. Prior research has supported a primary role for drought (rather than humans) in triggering faunal turnover at Tsimanampesotse. This is based on evidence of: (1) a large freshwater ecosystem west of what is now the hypersaline Lake Tsimanampesotse, which supported freshwater mollusks and waterfowl (including animals that could not survive on resources offered by the hypersaline lake today); (2) abundant now-extinct terrestrial vertebrates; (3) regional decline or disappearance of certain tree species; and (4) scant local human presence. Our new data allow us to document the hydroclimate of the subarid southwest during the Holocene, as well as shifts in faunal composition (including local extirpations, large-vertebrate population collapse, and the appearance of introduced species). Following from grid-forming (but grid-connected) wind park field tests reported in 2019, a logical extension of the testing is to prove the ability of a 69 MW grid-forming wind park to operate in an islanded condition, and to provide system restoration and black start services. A test programme carried out during August-October 2020 demonstrated, in principle, the ability of the wind turbines and power park to provide such services. Islanded mode operation, and resynchronisation to grid-connected mode are described. Also, it is verified that a small number of grid-forming turbines can support a larger number of grid-following turbines in islanded mode. Finally, black start and system restoration tests are described, during which the park back-energises a "dead" MV and HV network up to 132 or 275 kV, that can subsequently be resynchronised at those voltage levels, without a transient reactive infeed. Following from smaller-scale investigations of grid-forming converter control applied to wind turbines in 2017-8, this paper describes a much larger trial involving an entire wind park, owned and operated by Scottish Power Renewables. To our knowledge this is the first UK converterconnected wind park to operate in grid-forming mode, and the largest in the world to date. The 23-turbine, 69 MW park ran in grid-forming mode for approximately 6 weeks, exploring inertia contributions of between H = 0.2 s and H = 8 s. A large amount of data was gathered at the turbine and park level, recording responses both to deliberately-induced scenarios, and also to grid events. A number of unscheduled frequency disturbances occurred due to interconnector, CCGT and other trips, to which un-curtailed turbines were able to actively respond. While a significant amount of incremental improvement (software, hardware and energy storage) is still required to deal with the most extreme events which could occur, the turbines are able to provide stable and appropriate response at relatively high inertia levels to the frequency events commonly occurring today.
