This article proposes a provisional classification of different types of variants that can be found in indianos’ documents, taking as variants the different forms of expression corresponding to the same referential content and identified through a comparison of the different versions of a text, whether they result from a need for repetition or from an attempt of adaptation and/ or further explanation. As the variants will be defined, there will also be a classification of textual types. The empirical base consists of a sample of Columbian and Dominican documents, taken from the 17th and 18th century. The work does not aim at suggesting rules for editing or a definite classification of the «text types» but at demonstrating the intrinsically repetitive and polyphonic character of these documents, as a key to the analysis of phenomena in linguistic variation, not only in the characterization of a variational domain but also, and foremost in the study of linguistic variables., Este artículo plantea una clasificación provisional de los diversos tipos de variantes que pueden hallarse en documentos indianos, entendiendo como variantes las distintas formas de expresión que corresponden a un mismo contenido referencial y cuya identificación resulta aquí del cotejo de las distintas versiones de un mismo texto, ya surjan estas por una necesidad de repetición o por un intento de adaptación y/o reelaboración. Paralelamente a la definición de variantes se establecen tipos textuales. La base empírica consiste en una muestra de documentos colombianos y dominicanos correspondientes a los siglos XVII y XVIII. El trabajo no ambiciona resolver posibles problemas de edición ni una clasificación definitiva de los «tipos de textos» indianos, sino demostrar el carácter intrínsecamente repetitivo y polifónico de estos documentos como clave para el análisis de fenómenos de variación lingüística, tanto en la caracterización de un dominio variacional como, sobre todo, en el estudio de «variables lingüísticas».
