We present the first Hubble diagram of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) out to a redshift of two, together with constraints on the matter density, ωM, and the dark energy equation-of-state parameter, w(p/ρ). We build a sample of 20 cosmologically useful SLSNe I based on light curve and spectroscopy quality cuts. We confirm the robustness of the peak-decline SLSN I standardization relation with a larger data set and improved fitting techniques than previous works. We then solve the SLSN model based on the above standardization via minimization of the χ2 computed from a covariance matrix that includes statistical and systematic uncertainties. For a spatially flat Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmological model, we find $\Omega{\rm M}=0.38^{+0.24}_{-0.19}$, with an rms of 0.27 mag for the residuals of the distance moduli. For a w0waCDM cosmological model, the addition of SLSNe I to a 'baseline' measurement consisting of Planck temperature together with Type Ia supernovae, results in a small improvement in the constraints of w0 and wa of 4 per cent. We present simulations of future surveys with 868 and 492 SLSNe I (depending on the configuration used) and show that such a sample can deliver cosmological constraints in a flat ΛCDM model with the same precision (considering only statistical uncertainties) as current surveys that use Type Ia supernovae, while providing a factor of 2-3 improvement in the precision of the constraints on the time variation of dark energy, w0 and wa. This paper represents the proof of concept for superluminous supernova cosmology, and demonstrates they can provide an independent test of cosmology in the high-redshift (z > 1) universe.

We present DES16C3cje, a low-luminosity, long-lived type II supernova (SN II) at redshift 0.0618, detected by the Dark Energy Survey (DES). DES16C3cje is a unique SN. The spectra are characterized by extremely narrow photospheric lines corresponding to very low expansion velocities of1500 km s-1, and the light curve shows an initial peak that fades after 50 d before slowly rebrightening over a further 100 d to reach an absolute brightness of Mr ∼-15.5 mag. The decline rate of the late-time light curve is then slower than that expected from the powering by radioactive decay of 56Co, but is comparable to that expected from accretion power. Comparing the bolometric light curve with hydrodynamical models, we find that DES16C3cje can be explained by either (i) a low explosion energy (0.11 foe) and relatively large 56Ni production of 0.075 M· from an ∼15 M· red supergiant progenitor typical of other SNe II, or (ii) a relatively compact ∼40 M· star, explosion energy of 1 foe, and 0.08 M· of 56Ni. Both scenarios require additional energy input to explain the late-time light curve, which is consistent with fallback accretion at a rate of ∼0.5 × 10-8 M· s-1.

We present an analysis of DES17X1boj and DES16E2bjy, two peculiar transients discovered by the Dark Energy Survey (DES). They exhibit nearly identical double-peaked light curves that reach very different maximum luminosities (Mr = -15.4 and -17.9, respectively). The light-curve evolution of these events is highly atypical and has not been reported before. The transients are found in different host environments: DES17X1boj was found near the nucleus of a spiral galaxy, while DES16E2bjy is located in the outskirts of a passive red galaxy. Early photometric data are well fitted with a blackbody and the resulting moderate photospheric expansion velocities (1800 km s-1 for DES17X1boj and 4800 km s-1 for DES16E2bjy) suggest an explosive or eruptive origin. Additionally, a feature identified as high-velocity Ca ii absorption (v ≈ 9400 km s-1) in the near-peak spectrum of DES17X1boj may imply that it is a supernova. While similar light-curve evolution suggests a similar physical origin for these two transients, we are not able to identify or characterize the progenitors.

We present improved photometric measurements for the host galaxies of 206 spectroscopically confirmed type Ia supernovae discovered by the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN) and used in the first DES-SN cosmological analysis. For the DES-SN sample, when considering a 5D (z, x1, c, α, β) bias correction, we find evidence of a Hubble residual 'mass step', where SNe Ia in high-mass galaxies (>1010M☉) are intrinsically more luminous (after correction) than their low-mass counterparts by γ = 0.040 ± 0.019 mag. This value is larger by 0.031 mag than the value found in the first DES-SN cosmological analysis. This difference is due to a combination of updated photometric measurements and improved star formation histories and is not from host-galaxy misidentification. When using a 1D (redshift-only) bias correction the inferred mass step is larger, with γ = 0.066 ± 0.020 mag. The 1D−5D γ difference for DES-SN is 0.026 ± 0.009 mag. We show that this difference is due to a strong correlation between host galaxy stellar mass and the x1 component of the 5D distance-bias correction. Including an intrinsic correlation between the observed properties of SNe Ia, stretch and colour, and stellar mass in simulated SN Ia samples, we show that a 5D fit recovers γ with −9 mmag bias compared to a +2 mmag bias for a 1D fit. This difference can explain part of the discrepancy seen in the data. Improvements in modelling correlations between galaxy properties and SN is necessary to ensure unbiased precision estimates of the dark energy equation of state as we enter the era of LSST.

We present observations of DES16C2nm, the first spectroscopically confirmed hydrogen-free superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) at redshift z ≊ 2. DES16C2nm was discovered by the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Supernova Program, with follow-up photometric data from the Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini, and the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope supplementing the DES data. Spectroscopic observations confirm DES16C2nm to be at z = 1.998, and spectroscopically similar to Gaia16apd (a SLSN-I at z = 0.102), with a peak absolute magnitude of U = -22.26 ± 0.06. The high redshift of DES16C2nm provides a unique opportunity to study the ultraviolet (UV) properties of SLSNe-I. Combining DES16C2nm with 10 similar events from the literature, we show that there exists a homogeneous class of SLSNe-I in the UV (λrest ≊ 2500 Å), with peak luminosities in the (rest-frame) U band, and increasing absorption to shorter wavelengths. There is no evidence that the mean photometric and spectroscopic properties of SLSNe-I differ between low (z < 1) and high redshift (z > 1), but there is clear evidence of diversity in the spectrum at λrest < 2000 Å, possibly caused by the variations in temperature between events. No significant correlations are observed between spectral line velocities and photometric luminosity. Using these data, we estimate that SLSNe-I can be discovered to z = 3.8 by DES. While SLSNe-I are typically identified from their blue observed colors at low redshift (z < 1), we highlight that at z > 2 these events appear optically red, peaking in the observer-frame z-band. Such characteristics are critical to identify these objects with future facilities such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, Euclid, and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Telescope, which should detect such SLSNe-I to z = 3.5, 3.7, and 6.6, respectively.

We present a compilation of UBVRIz light curves of 51 type II supernovae discovered during the course of four different surveys during 1986-2003: the Cerro Tololo Supernova Survey, the Calán/Tololo Supernova Program (C&T), the Supernova Optical and Infrared Survey (SOIRS), and the Carnegie Type II Supernova Survey (CATS). The photometry is based on template-subtracted images to eliminate any potential host galaxy light contamination, and calibrated from foreground stars. This work presents these photometric data, studies the color evolution using different bands, and explores the relation between the magnitude at maximum brightness and the brightness decline parameter (s) from maximum light through the end of the recombination phase. This parameter is found to be shallower for redder bands and appears to have the best correlation in the B band. In addition, it also correlates with the plateau duration, being shorter (longer) for larger (smaller) s values.

Agave tequilana stems store fructan polymers, the main carbon source for tequila production. This crop takes six or more years for industrial maturity. In conducive conditions, agave wilt disease increases the incidence of dead plants after the fourth year. Plant susceptibility induced for limited photosynthates for defense is recognized in many crops and is known as "sink-induced loss of resistance". To establish whether A. tequilana is more prone to agave wilt as it ages, because the reduction of water-soluble carbohydrates in roots, as a consequence of greater assembly of highly polymerized fructans, were quantified roots sucrose, fructose, and glucose, as well as fructans in stems of agave plants of different ages. The damage induced by inoculation with Fusarium solani or F. oxysporum in the roots or xylem bundles, respectively, was recorded. As the agave plant accumulated fructans in the stem as the main sink, the amount of these hexoses diminished in the roots of older plants, and root rot severity increased when plants were inoculated with F. solani , as evidence of more susceptibility. This knowledge could help to structure disease management that reduces the dispersion of agave wilt, dead plants, and economic losses at the end of agave's long crop cycle.

In recent years, certain luminous extragalactic optical transients have been observed to last only a few days 1 . Their short observed duration implies a different powering mechanism from the most common luminous extragalactic transients (supernovae), whose timescale is weeks 2 . Some short-duration transients, most notably AT2018cow (ref.  3 ), show blue optical colours and bright radio and X-ray emission 4 . Several AT2018cow-like transients have shown hints of a long-lived embedded energy source 5 , such as X-ray variability 6,7 , prolonged ultraviolet emission 8 , a tentative X-ray quasiperiodic oscillation 9,10 and large energies coupled to fast (but subrelativistic) radio-emitting ejecta 11,12 . Here we report observations of minutes-duration optical flares in the aftermath of an AT2018cow-like transient, AT2022tsd (the 'Tasmanian Devil'). The flares occur over a period of months, are highly energetic and are probably nonthermal, implying that they arise from a near-relativistic outflow or jet. Our observations confirm that, in some AT2018cow-like transients, the embedded energy source is a compact object, either a magnetar or an accreting black hole., (© 2023. The American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) is an economically and ecologically important species, which is currently categorized as endangered in Mexico. L. polyphemus, one of four extant horseshoe crab species that constitute the class Merostomata, is distributed along the Atlantic coastline of the USA from Alabama to Maine and has another population on the coastline of Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. In the present study, we evaluated the genetic diversity and genetic structure of four separated localities along the coast of the Yucatan peninsula (Champoton, CH; Isla Arena, IA; Rio Lagartos, RL; and Holbox Island, HI), using nine microsatellite-type molecular markers for this species. The aim of this study is to obtain a baseline of the current level of genetic diversity, which would allow the monitoring of important changes over time. Multilocus analyses revealed moderate levels of genetic diversity (He, 0.5230 to 0.6389) and genetic structure within the whole study area (F ST 0.025). The population from RL showed limited gene flows, differing significantly from the other sampling sites. Tepache is a native beverage from Mexico, which is usually elaborated with pineapple shells, brown cane sugar and is fermented naturally. Beneficial health effects have been attributed to its consumption; however, the total ecosystem of this beverage including chemicals (substrates for microbial growth, prebiotics, etc) and microbiota (probiotics), and potential functionality had not been studied. In this work, the analysis of the tepache beverage for its physicochemical characteristics, as well as its structure of microbial communities and the predictive metabolic functionalities was carried out. Chemical characterization was performed via enzymatic and GC-MS methods. The bacterial and fungal communities were identified by using 16S rRNA and ITS metabarcoding through Illumina MiSeq 2 × 300. The metabolic potential was predicted by in silico tools. This research showed that after 72 h of fermentation, the tepache physicochemical characteristics shifted to 9.5 Brix degrees and acidic pH. The content of ethanol, acetic and L-lactic acid increased significantly from 0.83 ± 0.02 to 3.39 ± 0.18 g/L, from 0.38 ± 0.04 to 0.54 ± 0.04 g/L and from 1.42 ± 0.75 to 8.77 ± 0.34 g/L, respectively. While, the total sugars was decreased from 123.43 ± 2.01 to 84.70 ± 2.34 g/L. The microbial diversity analysis showed a higher richness of bacterial communities and increased fungal evenness at the end of fermentation. At 72 h of fermentation the microbial community was dominated by Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Acetobacter and Lactococcus bacterial genera. As for the fungal community, Saccharomyces, Gibberella, Zygosaccharomyces, Candida, Meyerozyma, Talaromyces, Epicoccum and Kabatiella were found to be in most abundance. The predicted functionality profile evidenced a close-fitting relationship between fungal communities at 0 h with the bacterial communities at 72 h of fermentation. The metabolic potential showed that glycolysis and citrate cycle metabolism were predominant for fungal community, while glycolysis, fructose and tricarboxylic acid metabolism were more representative for the bacterial core. Tepache fermentation mainly occurred at two temporal successions. First, a lactic acid and ethanol fermentation dominated by lactic acid bacteria and yeast, and then an increase in acetogenic bacteria. This study revealed for the first time the physicochemical, microbiological changes and predictive functionality that are involved during tepache fermentation. These findings contributed to the knowledge of important microbial sources and could be essential to future efforts in manufacturing process. Agave ( Agave tequilana var. azul) is considered a crop with low genetic diversity because it has been propagated vegetatively for centuries for commercial purposes, and consequently, it could be equally susceptible to pests and diseases. However, the present study employs plant material derived from field-grown plants exhibiting phenotypic variability in susceptibility to agave wilt. The offshoots from rhizomes of these plants were reproduced in vitro and classified as potentially resistant or susceptible. Amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis confirmed wide genetic differences among individuals, but these differences were not correlated with the observed phenotypic variability in resistance. Propagated plantlets were inoculated with Fusarium solani in two time-lapse confrontations for 72 h and 30 days. The early biochemical response showed statistically superior levels in the accumulation of shikimic acid, phenolic compounds, and chitinase activity in potentially resistant plantlets. There was an inverse correlation of these early biochemical responses and salicylic acid and the incidence of diseased root cells in isogenic plantlets in the 30-day confrontation with F. solani , suggesting that these activities and accumulation of molecules were primordial in the defence against this pathogen., (© The Author(s) 2022. The "El Chichón" crater-lake in Mexico is a thermo-acidic environment whose microorganisms have been scarcely studied. In this study, we surveyed the prokaryotic communities by amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene considering samples of sediment and water collected within a pH/temperature gradient (pH 1.9-5.1, 38-89 °C). Further, we interpreted these results within a physicochemical context. The composition of the microbial assemblage differed significantly between the sediments and water. Sediment communities were different in the site with the highest temperature and lower pH value compared to the other ones sampled, while those in the water were relatively similar at all points. Most of the genera found were related to Alicyclobacillus, Acinetobacter, Bacillus, Mesoaciditoga, Methanothermobacter, Desulfitobacterium, Therminicanus, Kyrpidia, Paenibacillus, Thermoanaerobacterium, and Gelria. Some of these genera are known by their thermo-acidic tolerant capacities with flexible metabolisms to use diverse electron donor/acceptors (S or Fe), while others are thermo(acid)philes that mainly occur in the most extreme sites of the lake. These results show the presence of a microbial community adapted to the changing conditions of a very dynamic crater-lake, that include chemoorganotrophs and chemolithotrophs., (© 2022. Background and Objective: The real prevalence of congenital Chagas disease is undefined because of difficulties in the detection of Trypanosoma cruzi by microscopic examination. The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of two molecular diagnostic tools, qPCR and LAMP, in the diagnosis of congenital Chagas disease in a clinical setting., Methods: To this end, we conducted a prospective cohort study in a tertiary care center, of infants under 9 months of age, born in Buenos Aires to women with Chagas disease. Blood samples were collected for microscopic examination and molecular diagnosis at baseline. If negative, infants were followed up until 9 months of age to determine a final diagnosis by serology. In-house qPCR and LAMP previously validated were challenged as index tests., Results: A total of 154 participants were potentially eligible, 120 of whom were enrolled. Finally, 102 (66.2%) of them fulfilled the follow-up. The diagnosis of congenital Chagas disease was confirmed in 13 infants and excluded in 89. Both the sensitivity and specificity of the qPCR were 100.0% (95% confidence interval 75.3-100.0 and 95% confidence interval 95.9-100.0, respectively), whereas the sensitivity and specificity of LAMP were 69.2% (95% confidence interval 38.6-90.9) and 100% (95% confidence interval 95.9-100.0), respectively., Conclusions: The qPCR agreed with the current diagnostic algorithm, and was a reliable and sensitive tool to detect congenital Chagas disease earlier, providing an appropriate and timely identification of infected infants requiring treatment. LAMP was able to detect congenital Chagas disease in infected infants by naked-eye visualization in accordance with a microscopic examination. Infection control and antimicrobial stewardship programs (ICASPs) are essential to reduce the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. The primary objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of extending a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software for ICASPs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This project involved three hospitals in Colombia, including Centro Médico Imbanaco, Clínica San Francisco, and DIME Clínica Neurocardiovascular. A COTS platform (ILÚM Health Solutions ™ Kenilworth, NJ) was extended to function in a range of technology settings, and translatable to almost any language. ICASP features were added, including clinical practice guidelines, hand hygiene (HH) documentation, and isolation precaution (IP) documentation. The platform was delivered as a smartphone mobile application ("app") for both iOS and Android. The app was successfully implemented at all sites, however, full back-end data integration was not feasible at any site. In contrast to the United States, a suite of surveillance tools and physician-focused decision support without patient data proved to be valuable. Language translation processing occurred quickly and incurred minimal costs. HH and IP compliance tracking were the most used features among ICASP staff; treatment guidelines were most often used by physicians. Use of the app streamlined activities and reduced the time spent on ICASP tasks. Users consistently reported positive impressions including simplicity of design, ease of navigation, and improved efficiency. This ICASP app was feasible in limited-resource settings, highly acceptable to users, and represents an innovative approach to antimicrobial resistance prevention., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interest WJS, JBFO, LNH and JMM are all employed by ILÚM Health Solutions, LLC, the developer of the mobile application. Mango ( Mangifera indica L.) peel and pulp are a source of dietary fiber (DF) and phenolic compounds (PCs) that constituent part of the indigestible fraction (IF). This fraction reaches the colon and acts as a carbon and energy source for intestinal microbiota. The effect of mango IF on intestinal microbiota during colonic fermentation is unknown. In this study, the isolated IF of a novel 'Ataulfo' mango-based bar (snack) UV-C irradiated and non-irradiated (UVMangoB and MangoB) were fermented. Colonic fermentation occurred in vitro under chemical-enzymatic, semi-anaerobic, batch culture and controlled pH colonic conditions. Changes in the structure of fecal microbiota were analyzed by 16s rRNA gene Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The community´s functional capabilities were determined in silico. The MangoB and UVMangoB increased the presence of Faecalibacterium , Roseburia , Eubacterium , Fusicatenibacter , Holdemanella , Catenibacterium , Phascolarctobacterium , Buttiauxella , Bifidobacterium , Collinsella , Prevotella and Bacteroides genera. The alpha indexes showed a decrease in microbial diversity after 6 h of colonic fermentation. The coordinates analysis indicated any differences between irradiated and non-irradiated bar. The metabolic prediction demonstrated that MangoB and UVMangoB increase the microbiota carbohydrate metabolism pathway. This study suggests that IF of mango-based bar induced beneficial changes on microbial ecology and metabolic pathway that could be promissory to prevention or treatment of metabolic dysbiosis. However, in vivo interventions are necessary to confirm the interactions between microbiota modulating and intestinal beneficial effects., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Stephanosporamayana is presented as a new species from the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. This species is distinguished by the yellowish pileus, basidiospores with a small corona (4-6 × 1-2.5 µm), and variable size (8.0-17.0 × 6.0-11.0), thin pileus (21-40 µm) and the ecological association to lowland forest with Haematoxylumcampechianum , Gymnopodiumfloribundum , Coccolobadiversifolia , Metopiumbrownei and Pinuscaribaea . It differs from the American species of Stephanospora , like S.michoacanensis and S.chilensis , by its larger basidiospores. Descriptions, photographs and discussions are presented.

Gravitational waves were discovered with the detection of binary black-hole mergers and they should also be detectable from lower-mass neutron-star mergers. These are predicted to eject material rich in heavy radioactive isotopes that can power an electromagnetic signal. This signal is luminous at optical and infrared wavelengths and is called a kilonova. The gravitational-wave source GW170817 arose from a binary neutron-star merger in the nearby Universe with a relatively well confined sky position and distance estimate. Here we report observations and physical modelling of a rapidly fading electromagnetic transient in the galaxy NGC 4993, which is spatially coincident with GW170817 and with a weak, short γ-ray burst. The transient has physical parameters that broadly match the theoretical predictions of blue kilonovae from neutron-star mergers. The emitted electromagnetic radiation can be explained with an ejected mass of 0.04 ± 0.01 solar masses, with an opacity of less than 0.5 square centimetres per gram, at a velocity of 0.2 ± 0.1 times light speed. The power source is constrained to have a power-law slope of -1.2 ± 0.3, consistent with radioactive powering from r-process nuclides. (The r-process is a series of neutron capture reactions that synthesise many of the elements heavier than iron.) We identify line features in the spectra that are consistent with light r-process elements (atomic masses of 90-140). As it fades, the transient rapidly becomes red, and a higher-opacity, lanthanide-rich ejecta component may contribute to the emission. This indicates that neutron-star mergers produce gravitational waves and radioactively powered kilonovae, and are a nucleosynthetic source of the r-process elements.

Aims: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression in groups of obese and normal-weight individuals with type 2 diabetes. Also, to analyze the severity of depression in type 2 diabetics by taking into account the body mass index in people with this condition., Methods: This study included 702 patients with type 2 diabetes, 236 with normal weight, and 231 with obesity. All participants completed a demographic questionnaire, the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale., Results: In patients with obesity, 48.48% (95% CI: 41.82-55.14) were positive for anxiety and 49.78% (95% CI: 43.11-56.44) for depression. A significant correlation existed between the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and body mass index with a correlation coefficient of 0.11 (p = 0.003). Also, a significant correlation coefficient equal to 0.107 (p = 0.005) between the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and body mass index was found. In addition, when we analyzed depression scores, significant differences were encountered for gender between normal-weight and obesity groups in the range of severe (p = 0.01) and very severe (p = 0.04) cases., Conclusion: In view of the existing relationships observed among obesity, depression, anxiety, and gender in type 2 diabetics, we consider that a psychological intervention is necessary for an integral management of these patients.

Background: Despite the high frequency of cardiovascular disease among the population on dialysis, there are few studies on ischaemic stroke and associated factors. The objective of the present study is to assess the prevalence of ischaemic stroke at the start of dialysis, its incidence in the course of follow-up and possible factors associated in its presentation., Methods: All patients in our dialysis programme between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2005 were included in the study and followed up until death, transplant, transfer out of our catchment area, or conclusion of the study on 31 December 2008. Factors analysed were age, gender, smoking habit, diabetes, hypertension, previous ischaemic stroke, ischaemic coronary disease, peripheral vascular disease and atrial fibrillation. Other factors measured in the first month of dialysis were haematocrit, urea, creatinine, lipids, calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone and albumin., Results: Of 449 patients included in the study (age 64.4 ± 16 years), 30 commenced dialysis having had previous stroke (prevalence 6.7%). In a follow-up of 38.77 ± 29 months, 34 patients presented with one or more strokes; an incidence of 2.41/100 patient-years. Greater age [odds ratio (OR): 1.05; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.09; P = 0.007], diabetes (OR: 2.29; 95% CI: 1.15-4.55; P = 0.018) and presence of atrial fibrillation (OR: 3.11; 95% CI: 1.53-6.32; P = 0.002) were independent predictors of stroke occurrence. Conclusions. The prevalence of ischaemic stroke is high at the commencement of dialysis, and its incidence is elevated in the course of follow-up. As with the general population, atrial fibrillation is an important factor predictive of ischaemic stroke, and as such, the clinical implication is that prophylactic anti-coagulation therapy needs to be considered for these individuals.
