Abstract

There is a growing interest in reconstructing the density matrix of photoelectron wavepackets, in particular in complex systems where decoherence can be introduced either by a partial measurement of the system or through coupling with a stochastic environment. To this end, several methods to reconstruct the density matrix, quantum state tomography protocols, have been developed and tested on photoelectrons ejected from noble gases following absorption of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photons from attosecond pulses. It remains a challenge to obtain model-free, single scan protocols that can reconstruct the density matrix with high fidelities. Current methods require extensive measurements or involve complex fitting of the signal. Efficient single-scan reconstructions would be of great help to increase the number of systems that can be studied. We propose a new and more efficient protocol that is able to reconstruct the continuous variable density matrix of a photoelectron in a single time delay scan. It is based on measuring the coherences of a photoelectron created by absorption of an XUV pulse using a broadband infrared (IR) probe that is scanned in time and a narrowband IR reference that is temporally fixed to the XUV pulse. We illustrate its performance for a Fano resonance in He as well as mixed states in Ar arising from spin-orbit splitting. 23. Enhancing Object Detection for Autonomous Driving by Optimizing Anchor Generation and Addressing Class Imbalance

Abstract

Object detection has been one of the most active topics in computer vision for the past years. Recent works have mainly focused on pushing the state-of-the-art in the general-purpose COCO benchmark. However, the use of such detection frameworks in specific applications such as autonomous driving is yet an area to be addressed. This study presents an enhanced 2D object detector based on Faster R-CNN that is better suited for the context of autonomous vehicles. Two main aspects are improved: the anchor generation procedure and the performance drop in minority classes. The default uniform anchor configuration is not suitable in this scenario due to the perspective projection of the vehicle cameras. Therefore, we propose a perspective-aware methodology that divides the image into key regions via clustering and uses evolutionary algorithms to optimize the base anchors for each of them. Furthermore, we add a module that enhances the precision of the second-stage header network by including the spatial information of the candidate regions proposed in the first stage. We also explore different re-weighting strategies to address the foreground-foreground class imbalance, showing that the use of a reduced version of focal loss can significantly improve the detection of difficult and underrepresented objects in two-stage detectors. Finally, we design an ensemble model to combine the strengths of the different learning strategies. Our proposal is evaluated with the Waymo Open Dataset, which is the most extensive and diverse up to date. The results demonstrate an average accuracy improvement of 6.13% mAP when using the best single model, and of 9.69% mAP with the ensemble. The proposed modifications over the Faster R-CNN do not increase computational cost and can easily be extended to optimize other anchor-based detection frameworks.

26. Dynamics of a helical swimmer crossing viscosity gradients

Abstract

We experimentally and theoretically study the dynamics of a low-Reynolds number helical swimmer moving across viscosity gradients. Experimentally, a double-layer viscosity is generated by superposing two miscible fluids with similar densities but different dynamic viscosities. A synthetic helical magnetically-driven swimmer is then made to move across the viscosity gradients along four different configurations: either head-first (pusher swimmer) or tail-first (puller), and through either positive (i.e. going from low to high viscosity) or negative viscosity gradients. We observe qualitative differences in the penetration dynamics for each case. We find that the swimming speed can either increase or decrease while swimming across the viscosity interface, which results from the fact that the head and the tail of the swimmer can be in environments in which the local viscosity leads to different relative amounts of drag and thrust. In order to rationalize the experimental measurements, we next develop a theoretical hydrodynamic model. We assume that the classical resistive-force theory of slender filaments is locally valid along the helical propeller and use it to calculate the swimming speed as a function of the position of the swimmer relative to the fluid-fluid interface. The predictions of the model agree well with experiments for the case of positive viscosity gradients. When crossing across a negative gradient, gravitational forces in the experiment become important, and we modify the model to include buoyancy, which agrees with experiments. In general our results show that it is harder for a pusher swimmer to cross from low to high viscosity, whereas for a puller swimmer it is the opposite. Our model is also extended to the case of a swimmer crossing a continuous viscosity gradient.

31. On Demand Solid Texture Synthesis Using Deep 3D Networks

Abstract

This paper describes a novel approach for on demand volumetric texture synthesis based on a deep learning framework that allows for the generation of high quality 3D data at interactive rates. Based on a few example images of textures, a generative network is trained to synthesize coherent portions of solid textures of arbitrary sizes that reproduce the visual characteristics of the examples along some directions. To cope with memory limitations and computation complexity that are inherent to both high resolution and 3D processing on the GPU, only 2D textures referred to as "slices" are generated during the training stage. These synthetic textures are compared to exemplar images via a perceptual loss function based on a pre-trained deep network. The proposed network is very light (less than 100k parameters), therefore it only requires sustainable training (i.e. few hours) and is capable of very fast generation (around a second for $256^3$ voxels) on a single GPU. Integrated with a spatially seeded PRNG the proposed generator network directly returns an RGB value given a set of 3D coordinates. The synthesized volumes have good visual results that are at least equivalent to the state-of-the-art patch based approaches. They are naturally seamlessly tileable and can be fully generated in parallel.

32. Pattern formation by droplet evaporation and imbibition in watercolor paintings

Abstract

Watercolor or aquarelle is one of the oldest painting methods in which pigments suspended in an aqueous liquid are deposited over a substrate, typically an absorbing material such as paper. The physical processes which lead to pattern formation have not been studied in any depth, in spite of being closely related to flows in other contexts. Identifying and understanding these processes is of imperative importance to restore and preserve watercolor paintings. Here, we report an experimental study of the effect of the pigment concentration and paper humidity on the pattern formation derived from evaporation of droplets of watercolor paintings. Optical analysis reveals the formation of color gradients, stratifications, flat regions, borders, dendritic shapes, and radial tips. We found that droplet evaporation on dry paper forms ring-shaped stains which resemble to the \emph{coffee-stain effect} regardless of the nature of the pigment. The mean pixel intensity of such deposits follows an exponential function that saturates at high concentration, while the thickness of the coffee ring increase for watercolor inks containing colloidal particles and does not change for non-colloidal . Our experiments reveal that water distribution on the paper surface, and not the volumetric absorption of water on the paper, determine the structural characteristics of watercolor stains. We show evidence that the cornerstone in the creation of complex patterns in watercolor paintings is driven by the coffee ring effect and imbibition processes. Our findings aim to serve as framework for further investigations of the complex processes involved in this ancient art form and could guide restoration processes needed to preserve the heritage value of historical watercolor artworks.

Abstract

Hypoxia is a frequent source of stress in the estuarine habitat of the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. During hypoxia, L. vannamei gill cells rely more heavily on anaerobic glycolysis to obtain ATP. This is mediated by transcriptional up-regulation of glycolytic enzymes including glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). The hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is an important transcriptional activator of several glycolytic enzymes during hypoxia in diverse animals, including crustaceans. In this work, we cloned and sequenced a fragment corresponding to the 5' flank of the GAPDH gene and identified a putative HIF-1 binding site, as well as sites for other transcription factors involved in the hypoxia signaling pathway. To investigate the role of HIF-1 in GAPDH regulation, we simultaneously injected double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) into shrimp to silence HIF-1α and HIF-1β under normoxia, hypoxia, and hypoxia followed by reoxygenation, and then measured gill HIF-1α, HIF-1β expression, GAPDH expression and activity, and glucose and lactate concentrations at 0, 3, 24 and 48 h. During normoxia, HIF-1 silencing induced up-regulation of GAPDH transcripts and activity, suggesting that expression is down-regulated via HIF-1 under these conditions. In contrast, HIF-1 silencing during hypoxia abolished the increases in GAPDH expression and activity, glucose and lactate concentrations. Finally, HIF-1 silencing during hypoxia-reoxygenation prevented the increase in GAPDH expression, however, those changes were not reflected in GAPDH activity and lactate accumulation. Altogether, these results indicate that GAPDH and glycolysis are transcriptionally regulated by HIF-1 in gills of white shrimp.

46. Noninvasive Methods Unveil the Trophic Transmission of the Tapeworm Ligula intestinalis in Gull‐Billed Terns.

Abstract

Recent developments in microscopic and molecular tools have allowed the implementation of new approaches for assessing parasitic infections in wildlife populations. This is particularly important for the noninvasive detection and quantification of endoparasites in live animals. Here, we combined copromicroscopic (Mini‐FLOTAC) and molecular (qPCR) techniques to detect the infection of the macroparasite Ligula intestinalis (Cestoda, Pseudophyllidea) in fresh droppings of Gull‐billed Terns Gelochelidon nilotica (Charadriiformes, Laridae) breeding in southwestern Spain. Additionally, we sequenced the cytochrome b gene in parasite isolates from Gull‐billed Terns (definitive host) and Common Bleak Alburnus alburnus (second intermediate host) sampled around tern colonies to explore potential genetic differences between the isolates. The qPCR test showed a higher prevalence (18%; in 13/73 samples) than Mini‐FLOTAC (9%; in 8/88 samples), indicating that qPCR was more sensitive for diagnostic purposes than fecal flotation alone. Although the agreement between both techniques was substantial (84.2%) mainly due to the large number of uninfected samples, only Mini‐FLOTAC allowed us to quantify parasite shedding. When combining techniques, the prevalence of infection did not differ between adults and chicks, suggesting frequent trophic transmission from parents to their offspring via food provisioning. Phylogenetic analyses identified four haplotypes in the isolates from Gull‐billed Terns and Bleak, all of which were placed within a European clade composed of tapeworms recovered exclusively from phylogenetically derived cyprinid fish. This, combined with the short lifespan of mature tapeworms, suggests that Gull‐billed Terns became infected after consuming infected fish around their breeding colonies rather than on their West African wintering grounds. Altogether, our results represent the first record of L. intestinalis in Gull‐billed Terns and the first molecular characterization of the parasite in the Iberian Peninsula. This integrative coprodiagnostic protocol can be applied to other host–parasite systems, allowing researchers to study helminth infections in wild populations using a noninvasive approach.
