Abstract: High-redshift protoclusters consisting of dusty starbursts are thought to play an important role in galaxy evolution. Their dusty nature makes them bright in the FIR/submm but difficult to find in optical/NIR surveys. Radio observations are an excellent way to study these dusty starbursts, as dust is transparent in the radio and there is a tight correlation between the FIR and radio emission of a galaxy. Here, we present MeerKAT 1.28 GHz radio imaging of 3 Herschel candidate protoclusters, with a synthesised beam size of ~$7.5'' \times 6.6''$ and a central thermal noise down to $4.35~\mu$Jy/beam. Our source counts are consistent with other radio counts with no evidence of overdensities. Around 95% of the Herschel sources have 1.28 GHz IDs. Using the Herschel 250 micron primary beam size as the searching radius, we find 54.2% Herschel sources have multiple 1.28 GHz IDs. Our average FIR-radio correlation coefficient $q_{250\mu m}$ is $2.33\pm 0.26$. Adding $q_{250\mu m}$ as a new constraint, the probability of finding chance-aligned sources is reduced by a factor of ~6, but with the risk of discarding true identifications of radio-loud/quiet sources. With accurate MeerKAT positions, we cross-match our Herschel sources to optical/NIR data followed by photometric redshift estimations. By removing $z<1$ sources, the density contrasts of two of the candidate protoclusters increase, suggestive of them being real protoclusters at $z>1$. There is also potentially a $0.9

Abstract: To date, galaxy image simulations for weak lensing surveys usually approximate the light profiles of all galaxies as a single or double S\'ersic profile, neglecting the influence of galaxy substructures and morphologies deviating from such a simplified parametric characterization. While this approximation may be sufficient for previous data sets, the stringent cosmic shear calibration requirements and the high quality of the data in the upcoming Euclid survey demand a consideration of the effects that realistic galaxy substructures have on shear measurement biases. Here we present a novel deep learning-based method to create such simulated galaxies directly from HST data. We first build and validate a convolutional neural network based on the wavelet scattering transform to learn noise-free representations independent of the point-spread function of HST galaxy images that can be injected into simulations of images from Euclid's optical instrument VIS without introducing noise correlations during PSF convolution or shearing. Then, we demonstrate the generation of new galaxy images by sampling from the model randomly and conditionally. Next, we quantify the cosmic shear bias from complex galaxy shapes in Euclid-like simulations by comparing the shear measurement biases between a sample of model objects and their best-fit double-S\'ersic counterparts. Using the KSB shape measurement algorithm, we find a multiplicative bias difference between these branches with realistic morphologies and parametric profiles on the order of $6.9\times 10^{-3}$ for a realistic magnitude-S\'ersic index distribution. Moreover, we find clear detection bias differences between full image scenes simulated with parametric and realistic galaxies, leading to a bias difference of $4.0\times 10^{-3}$ independent of the shape measurement method. Abstract: We study the constraint on $f(R)$ gravity that can be obtained by photometric primary probes of the Euclid mission. Our focus is the dependence of the constraint on the theoretical modelling of the nonlinear matter power spectrum. In the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity model, we consider four different predictions for the ratio between the power spectrum in $f(R)$ and that in $\Lambda$CDM: a fitting formula, the halo model reaction approach, ReACT and two emulators based on dark matter only $N$-body simulations, FORGE and e-Mantis. These predictions are added to the MontePython implementation to predict the angular power spectra for weak lensing (WL), photometric galaxy clustering and their cross-correlation. By running Markov Chain Monte Carlo, we compare constraints on parameters and investigate the bias of the recovered $f(R)$ parameter if the data are created by a different model. For the pessimistic setting of WL, one dimensional bias for the $f(R)$ parameter, $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|$, is found to be $0.5 \sigma$ when FORGE is used to create the synthetic data with $\log_{10}|f_{R0}| =-5.301$ and fitted by e-Mantis. The impact of baryonic physics on WL is studied by using a baryonification emulator BCemu. For the optimistic setting, the $f(R)$ parameter and two main baryon parameters are well constrained despite the degeneracies among these parameters. However, the difference in the nonlinear dark matter prediction can be compensated by the adjustment of baryon parameters, and the one-dimensional marginalised constraint on $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|$ is biased. This bias can be avoided in the pessimistic setting at the expense of weaker constraints. For the pessimistic setting, using the $\Lambda$CDM synthetic data for WL, we obtain the prior-independent upper limit of $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|< -5.6$. Abstract: The Euclid mission will measure cosmological parameters with unprecedented precision. To distinguish between cosmological models, it is essential to generate realistic mock observables from cosmological simulations that were run in both the standard $\Lambda$-cold-dark-matter ($\Lambda$CDM) paradigm and in many non-standard models beyond $\Lambda$CDM. We present the scientific results from a suite of cosmological N-body simulations using non-standard models including dynamical dark energy, k-essence, interacting dark energy, modified gravity, massive neutrinos, and primordial non-Gaussianities. We investigate how these models affect the large-scale-structure formation and evolution in addition to providing synthetic observables that can be used to test and constrain these models with Euclid data. We developed a custom pipeline based on the Rockstar halo finder and the nbodykit large-scale structure toolkit to analyse the particle output of non-standard simulations and generate mock observables such as halo and void catalogues, mass density fields, and power spectra in a consistent way. We compare these observables with those from the standard $\Lambda$CDM model and quantify the deviations. We find that non-standard cosmological models can leave significant imprints on the synthetic observables that we have generated. Our results demonstrate that non-standard cosmological N-body simulations provide valuable insights into the physics of dark energy and dark matter, which is essential to maximising the scientific return of Euclid., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: To constrain models beyond $\Lambda$CDM, the development of the Euclid analysis pipeline requires simulations that capture the nonlinear phenomenology of such models. We present an overview of numerical methods and $N$-body simulation codes developed to study the nonlinear regime of structure formation in alternative dark energy and modified gravity theories. We review a variety of numerical techniques and approximations employed in cosmological $N$-body simulations to model the complex phenomenology of scenarios beyond $\Lambda$CDM. This includes discussions on solving nonlinear field equations, accounting for fifth forces, and implementing screening mechanisms. Furthermore, we conduct a code comparison exercise to assess the reliability and convergence of different simulation codes across a range of models. Our analysis demonstrates a high degree of agreement among the outputs of different simulation codes, providing confidence in current numerical methods for modelling cosmic structure formation beyond $\Lambda$CDM. Abstract: We investigate the level of accuracy and precision of cluster weak-lensing (WL) masses measured with the \Euclid data processing pipeline. We use the DEMNUni-Cov $N$-body simulations to assess how well the WL mass probes the true halo mass, and, then, how well WL masses can be recovered in the presence of measurement uncertainties. We consider different halo mass density models, priors, and mass point estimates. WL mass differs from true mass due to, e.g., the intrinsic ellipticity of sources, correlated or uncorrelated matter and large-scale structure, halo triaxiality and orientation, and merging or irregular morphology. In an ideal scenario without observational or measurement errors, the maximum likelihood estimator is the most accurate, with WL masses biased low by $\langle b_M \rangle = -14.6 \pm 1.7 \, \%$ on average over the full range $M_\text{200c} > 5 \times 10^{13} \, M_\odot$ and $z < 1$. Due to the stabilising effect of the prior, the biweight, mean, and median estimates are more precise. The scatter decreases with increasing mass and informative priors significantly reduce the scatter. Halo mass density profiles with a truncation provide better fits to the lensing signal, while the accuracy and precision are not significantly affected. We further investigate the impact of additional sources of systematic uncertainty on the WL mass, namely the impact of photometric redshift uncertainties and source selection, the expected performance of \Euclid cluster detection algorithms, and the presence of masks. Taken in isolation, we find that the largest effect is induced by non-conservative source selection. This effect can be mostly removed with a robust selection. As a final \Euclid-like test, we combine systematic effects in a realistic observational setting and find results similar to the ideal case, $\langle b_M \rangle = - 15.5 \pm 2.4 \, \%$, under a robust selection.

Abstract: The Euclid mission, designed to map the geometry of the dark Universe, presents an unprecedented opportunity for advancing our understanding of the cosmos through its photometric galaxy cluster survey. This paper focuses on enhancing the precision of halo bias (HB) predictions, which is crucial for deriving cosmological constraints from the clustering of galaxy clusters. Our study is based on the peak-background split (PBS) model linked to the halo mass function (HMF); it extends with a parametric correction to precisely align with results from an extended set of $N$-body simulations carried out with the OpenGADGET3 code. Employing simulations with fixed and paired initial conditions, we meticulously analyze the matter-halo cross-spectrum and model its covariance using a large number of mock catalogs generated with Lagrangian Perturbation Theory simulations with the PINOCCHIO code. This ensures a comprehensive understanding of the uncertainties in our HB calibration. Our findings indicate that the calibrated HB model is remarkably resilient against changes in cosmological parameters including those involving massive neutrinos. The robustness and adaptability of our calibrated HB model provide an important contribution to the cosmological exploitation of the cluster surveys to be provided by the Euclid mission. This study highlights the necessity of continuously refining the calibration of cosmological tools like the HB to match the advancing quality of observational data. As we project the impact of our model on cosmological constraints, we find that, given the sensitivity of the Euclid survey, a miscalibration of the HB could introduce biases in cluster cosmology analyses. Our work fills this critical gap, ensuring the HB calibration matches the expected precision of the Euclid survey. The observables in galaxy surveys, such as galaxy clustering and cosmic shear, are not continuous fields, but discrete sets of data, obtained only at the positions of galaxies. We show how to compute the angular power spectra of such discrete data sets, without treating observations as maps of an underlying continuous field that is overlaid with a noise component. This formalism allows us to compute exact theoretical expectations for our measured spectra, under a number of assumptions that we track explicitly. In particular, we obtain exact expressions for the additive biases ("shot noise") in angular galaxy clustering and cosmic shear. For efficient practical computations, we introduce a spin-weighted spherical convolution with a well-defined convolution theorem, which allows us to apply exact theoretical predictions to finite-resolution maps, including HEALPix. When validating our methodology, we find that our measurements are biased by less than 1% of their statistical uncertainty in simulations of Euclid's first data release., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures. Abstract: Galaxy proto-clusters are receiving an increased interest since most of the processes shaping the structure of clusters of galaxies and their galaxy population are happening at early stages of their formation. The Euclid Survey will provide a unique opportunity to discover a large number of proto-clusters over a large fraction of the sky (14 500 square degrees). In this paper, we explore the expected observational properties of proto-clusters in the Euclid Wide Survey by means of theoretical models and simulations. We provide an overview of the predicted proto-cluster extent, galaxy density profiles, mass-richness relations, abundance, and sky-filling as a function of redshift. Useful analytical approximations for the functions of these properties are provided. The focus is on the redshift range z= 1.5 to 4. We discuss in particular the density contrast with which proto-clusters can be observed against the background in the galaxy distribution if photometric galaxy redshifts are used as supplied by the ESA Euclid mission together with the ground-based photometric surveys. We show that the obtainable detection significance is sufficient to find large numbers of interesting proto-cluster candidates. Abstract: We present the Flagship galaxy mock, a simulated catalogue of billions of galaxies designed to support the scientific exploitation of the Euclid mission. Euclid is a medium-class mission of the European Space Agency optimised to determine the properties of dark matter and dark energy on the largest scales of the Universe. It probes structure formation over more than 10 billion years primarily from the combination of weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering data. The breath of Euclid's data will also foster a wide variety of scientific analyses. The Flagship simulation was developed to provide a realistic approximation to the galaxies that will be observed by Euclid and used in its scientific analyses. We ran a state-of-the-art N-body simulation with four trillion particles, producing a lightcone on the fly. From the dark matter particles, we produced a catalogue of 16 billion haloes in one octant of the sky in the lightcone up to redshift z=3. We then populated these haloes with mock galaxies using a halo occupation distribution and abundance matching approach, calibrating the free parameters of the galaxy mock against observed correlations and other basic galaxy properties. Modelled galaxy properties include luminosity and flux in several bands, redshifts, positions and velocities, spectral energy distributions, shapes and sizes, stellar masses, star formation rates, metallicities, emission line fluxes, and lensing properties. We selected a final sample of 3.4 billion galaxies with a magnitude cut of H_E<26, where we are complete. We have performed a comprehensive set of validation tests to check the similarity to observational data and theoretical models. In particular, our catalogue is able to closely reproduce the main characteristics of the weak lensing and galaxy clustering samples to be used in the mission's main cosmological analysis. Abstract: The near-infrared calibration unit (NI-CU) on board Euclid's Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) is the first astronomical calibration lamp based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to be operated in space. Euclid is a mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 framework, to explore the dark universe and provide a next-level characterisation of the nature of gravitation, dark matter, and dark energy. Calibrating photometric and spectrometric measurements of galaxies to better than 1.5% accuracy in a survey homogeneously mapping ~14000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky requires a very detailed characterisation of near-infrared (NIR) detector properties, as well their constant monitoring in flight. To cover two of the main contributions - relative pixel-to-pixel sensitivity and non-linearity characteristics - as well as support other calibration activities, NI-CU was designed to provide spatially approximately homogeneous (<12% variations) and temporally stable illumination (0.1%-0.2% over 1200s) over the NISP detector plane, with minimal power consumption and energy dissipation. NI-CU is covers the spectral range ~[900,1900] nm - at cryo-operating temperature - at 5 fixed independent wavelengths to capture wavelength-dependent behaviour of the detectors, with fluence over a dynamic range of >=100 from ~15 ph s^-1 pixel^-1 to >1500 ph s^-1 pixel^-1. For this functionality, NI-CU is based on LEDs. We describe the rationale behind the decision and design process, describe the challenges in sourcing the right LEDs, as well as the qualification process and lessons learned. We also provide a description of the completed NI-CU, its capabilities and performance as well as its limits. Abstract: The Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) on board the Euclid satellite provides multiband photometry and R>=450 slitless grism spectroscopy in the 950-2020nm wavelength range. In this reference article we illuminate the background of NISP's functional and calibration requirements, describe the instrument's integral components, and provide all its key properties. We also sketch the processes needed to understand how NISP operates and is calibrated, and its technical potentials and limitations. Links to articles providing more details and technical background are included. NISP's 16 HAWAII-2RG (H2RG) detectors with a plate scale of 0.3" pix^-1 deliver a field-of-view of 0.57deg^2. In photo mode, NISP reaches a limiting magnitude of ~24.5AB mag in three photometric exposures of about 100s exposure time, for point sources and with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 5. For spectroscopy, NISP's point-source sensitivity is a SNR = 3.5 detection of an emission line with flux ~2x10^-16erg/s/cm^2 integrated over two resolution elements of 13.4A, in 3x560s grism exposures at 1.6 mu (redshifted Ha). Our calibration includes on-ground and in-flight characterisation and monitoring of detector baseline, dark current, non-linearity, and sensitivity, to guarantee a relative photometric accuracy of better than 1.5%, and relative spectrophotometry to better than 0.7%. The wavelength calibration must be better than 5A. NISP is the state-of-the-art instrument in the NIR for all science beyond small areas available from HST and JWST - and an enormous advance due to its combination of field size and high throughput of telescope and instrument. During Euclid's 6-year survey covering 14000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky, NISP will be the backbone for determining distances of more than a billion galaxies. Abstract: The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Abstract: This paper presents the specification, design, and development of the Visible Camera (VIS) on the ESA Euclid mission. VIS is a large optical-band imager with a field of view of 0.54 deg^2 sampled at 0.1" with an array of 609 Megapixels and spatial resolution of 0.18". It will be used to survey approximately 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky to measure the distortion of galaxies in the redshift range z=0.1-1.5 resulting from weak gravitational lensing, one of the two principal cosmology probes of Euclid. With photometric redshifts, the distribution of dark matter can be mapped in three dimensions, and, from how this has changed with look-back time, the nature of dark energy and theories of gravity can be constrained. The entire VIS focal plane will be transmitted to provide the largest images of the Universe from space to date, reaching m_AB>24.5 with S/N >10 in a single broad I_E~(r+i+z) band over a six year survey. The particularly challenging aspects of the instrument are the control and calibration of observational biases, which lead to stringent performance requirements and calibration regimes. With its combination of spatial resolution, calibration knowledge, depth, and area covering most of the extra-Galactic sky, VIS will also provide a legacy data set for many other fields. This paper discusses the rationale behind the VIS concept and describes the instrument design and development before reporting the pre-launch performance derived from ground calibrations and brief results from the in-orbit commissioning. VIS should reach fainter than m_AB=25 with S/N>10 for galaxies of full-width half-maximum of 0.3" in a 1.3" diameter aperture over the Wide Survey, and m_AB>26.4 for a Deep Survey that will cover more than 50 deg^2. Abstract: While unobscured and radio-quiet active galactic nuclei are regularly being found at redshifts $z > 6$, their obscured and radio-loud counterparts remain elusive. We build upon our successful pilot study, presenting a new sample of low-frequency-selected candidate high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) over a sky area twenty times larger. We have refined our selection technique, in which we select sources with curved radio spectra between 72-231 MHz from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey. In combination with the requirements that our GLEAM-selected HzRG candidates have compact radio morphologies and be undetected in near-infrared $K_{\rm s}$-band imaging from the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, we find 51 new candidate HzRGs over a sky area of approximately 1200 deg$^2$. Our sample also includes two sources from the pilot study: the second-most distant radio galaxy currently known, at $z=5.55$, with another source potentially at $z \sim 8$. We present our refined selection technique and analyse the properties of the sample. We model the broadband radio spectra between 74 MHz and 9 GHz by supplementing the GLEAM data with both publicly available data and new observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 5.5 and 9 GHz. In addition, deep $K_{\rm s}$-band imaging from the High-Acuity Widefield $K$-band Imager (HAWK-I) on the Very Large Telescope and from the Southern Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey Regions $K_{\rm s}$-band Survey (SHARKS) is presented for five sources. 16. Relation of internal attenuation, dust emission, and the size of spiral galaxies. Calibration at low-z and how to use it as a cosmological test at high-z

Abstract: Dust in spiral galaxies produces emission in the far-infrared (FIR) and internal absorption in visible wavelengths. However, the relation of the two amounts is not trivial because optical absorption may saturate, but the FIR emission does not. Moreover, the volume concentration of dust plays a role in the relation of absorption and emission, which depends on the size of the galaxy. We explore the relation of these three quantities. In order to understand the geometrical problem, we developed a model of dust distribution. We also investigated the relation of the three variables with real data of spiral galaxies at z<0.2 using the spectroscopic SDSS and FIR AKARI surveys. Internal absorptions were derived with two different methods: the ratio of emission lines H$_\alpha $ and H$_\beta $, and a previously calibrated relation based on the color variations as a function of absolute magnitude and concentration index. We find that in our low-z sample, the dependence of the average internal attenuation on galaxy size is negligible on average. It allows us to derive the internal attenuation of the galaxy, $A_V$, even when we only know its FIR flux. This attenuation approximately depends on the inclination of the galaxy $i$ as $\overline {A_V}=\gamma_V \log _{10}\left(\frac{1}{\cos i}\right)$, where $\gamma_V$ is a constant. We found that $\gamma_V$ has a maximum value of $1.45\pm 0.27$ magnitudes. When similar properties of dust are assumed, a general expression can be used at any $z$. For cases of nonsaturation, this might be used as a cosmological test. Although the present-day sensitivity of FIR or mm surveys does not allow us to carry out this cosmological test at z>2 within the standard model, it may be used in the future. 19. Analysis of the Amplitude of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect out to Redshift z=0.8

Abstract: The interaction of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with the hot gas in clusters of galaxies, the so-called Sunyaev--Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, is a very useful tool that allows us to determine the physical conditions in such clusters and fundamental parameters of the cosmological models. In this work, we determine the dependence of the the SZ surface brightness amplitude with redshift and mass of the clusters. We have used PLANCK+IRAS data in the microwave-far infrared and a catalog with >10^5 clusters of galaxies extracted from the SDSS by Wen et al. (2012). We estimate and subtract the dust emission from those clusters. From the residual flux, we extract its SZ flux densities. The absolute value of the SZ amplitude indicates that the gas mass is around 10% of the total mass for cluster masses of M~10^{14} M_sun. This amplitude is compatible with no evolution with redshift and proportional to M^{2.70+/-0.37} (using X-ray derived masses) or M^{2.51+/-0.38} (using weak-lensing derived masses), with some tension regarding the expectations of the self-similar dependence (amplitude proportional to M^{5/3}). Other secondary products of our analysis include that clusters have a dust emission with emissivity index beta~2 and temperature T~25 K; we confirm that the CMB temperature agrees with a dependence of T_0(1+z) with clusters of much lower mass than those explored previously; and we find that the cluster masses derived by Wen et al. 21. MeerKAT observations of Herschel protocluster candidates.

Abstract: High-redshift protoclusters consisting of dusty starbursts are thought to play an important role in galaxy evolution. Their dusty nature makes them bright in the far-infrared (FIR)/submm but difficult to find in optical/near-infrared (NIR) surveys. Radio observations are an excellent way to study these dusty starbursts, as dust is transparent in the radio and there is a tight correlation between the FIR and radio emission of a galaxy. Here, we present MeerKAT 1.28 GHz radio imaging of three Herschel candidate protoclusters, with a synthesized beam size of |$\sim 7.5\, \mathrm{ arcsec}\times 6.6$| arcsec and a central thermal noise down to |$4.35~\mu$| Jy beam−1. Our source counts are consistent with other radio counts with no evidence of overdensities. Around 95 per cent of the Herschel sources have 1.28 GHz IDs. Using the Herschel |$250~\mu$| m primary beam size as the searching radius, we find 54.2 per cent Herschel sources have multiple 1.28 GHz IDs. Our average FIR-radio correlation coefficient |$q_{250\mu \text{m}}$| is |$2.33\pm 0.26$|⁠. Adding |$q_{250\mu \text{m}}$| as a new constraint, the probability of finding chance-aligned sources is reduced by a factor of |$\sim 6$|⁠ , but with the risk of discarding true identifications of radio-loud/quiet sources. With accurate MeerKAT positions, we cross-match our Herschel sources to optical/NIR data followed by photometric redshift estimations. By removing |$z< 1$| sources, the density contrasts of two of the candidate protoclusters increase, suggestive of them being real protoclusters at |$z> 1$|⁠. There is also potentially a |$0.9< z< 1.2$| overdensity associated with one candidate protocluster. In summary, photometric redshifts from radio-optical cross-identifications have provided some tentative evidence of overdensities aligning with two of the candidate protoclusters. 22. Dust in clusters: separating the contribution of galaxies and intracluster media

Abstract: We have analized a sample of 327 clusters of galaxies spanning the range 0.06-0.70 in redshift. Strong constraints on their mean intracluster emission by dust have been obtained using maps and catalogs from the HERSCHEL HerMES project; within a radius of 5 arcmin centered in each cluster, the 95% C.L. limits obtained are 86.6, 48.2 and 30.9 mJy at the observed frequencies of 250, 350 and 500 $\mu$m. From these restrictions, and assuming physical parameters typical of interstellar media in the Milky Way, we have obtained tight upper limits on the visual extinction of background galaxies due to the intracluster media: $A_V$(95% C.L.) <~$10^{-3}$ mags. Strong constraints are also obtained for the mass of such dust; for instance using the data at 350 $\mu$m we establish a 95% upper limit of $<10^9M_\odot$ within a circle with a radius of 5 arcmin centered in the clusters. This corresponds to a fraction of the total mass of the clusters of $9.5\times 10^{-6}$, and indicates a deficiency in the gas-to-dust ratio in the intracluster media by about three orders of magnitude as regards the value found in the Milky Way. Computing the total infrared luminosity of the clusters in three ranges of redshift (0.05-0.24, 0.24-0.42 and 0.42-0.71) and two ranges of mass ($<10^{14}$ and $>10^{14}M_\odot$) respectively, a strong evolution of luminosity in redshift ($L\sim z^{1.5}$) for both ranges of masses is found. Abstract: We present the identification and characterization of the optical counterpart to 2XMM J011942.7+032421, one of the most luminous and distant ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). The counterpart is located near a star forming region in a spiral arm of the galaxy NGC 470 with u, g, and r magnitudes of 21.53, 21.69, and 21.71 mags, respectively. The luminosity of the counterpart is much larger than that of a single O-type star, indicating that it may be a stellar cluster. Our optical spectroscopic observations confirm the association of the X-ray source and the optical counterpart with its host galaxy NGC 470, which validates the high, > 10^41 erg/s, X-ray luminosity of the source. Its optical spectrum is embedded with numerous emission lines, including H recombination lines, metallic forbidden lines and more notably the high-ionization HeII (lambda 4686 A) line. This line shows a large velocity dispersion of $\simeq$ 410 \kms, consistent with the existence of a compact (< 5 AU) highly-ionized accretion disc rotating around the central X-ray source. The 1.4 x 10^37 erg/s luminosity of the HeII line emission makes the source one of the most luminous ULXs in the emission of that line. This, together with the high X-ray luminosity and the large velocity dispersion of the HeII emission, suggests that the source is an ideal candidate for more extensive follow-up observations for understanding the nature of hyper-luminous X-ray sources, a more luminous subgroup of ULXs and more likely candidates for intermediate-mass black holes., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical journal Letters, 14 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The Liverpool Telescope is one of the world's premier facilities for time domain astronomy. The time domain landscape is set to radically change in the coming decade, with surveys such as LSST providing huge numbers of transient detections on a nightly basis; transient detections across the electromagnetic spectrum from other facilities such as SVOM, SKA and CTA; and the era of `multi-messenger astronomy', wherein events are detected via non-electromagnetic means, such as gravitational wave emission. We describe here our plans for Liverpool Telescope 2: a new robotic telescope designed to capitalise on this new era of time domain astronomy. LT2 will be a 4-metre class facility co-located with the LT at the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos on the Canary island of La Palma. The telescope will be designed for extremely rapid response: the aim is that the telescope will take data within 30 seconds of the receipt of a trigger from another facility. The motivation for this is twofold: firstly it will make it a world-leading facility for the study of fast fading transients and explosive phenomena discovered at early times. Secondly, it will enable large-scale programmes of low-to-intermediate resolution spectral classification of transients to be performed with great efficiency. In the target-rich environment of the LSST era, minimising acquisition overheads will be key to maximising the science gains from any follow-up programme. The telescope will have a diverse instrument suite which is simultaneously mounted for automatic changes, but it is envisaged that the primary instrument will be an intermediate resolution, optical/infrared spectrograph for scientific exploitation of transients discovered with the next generation of synoptic survey facilities. Abstract: We present a study to estimate the dust content in galaxy clusters by using one the most complete existing catalogues of galaxy clusters based on SDSS data and following two methods: the first one compares the colours of samples of galaxies in the background of clusters with those of galaxies in the field. Using this method, we have explored clustercentric distances up to 6 Mpc. The galaxies used in this first method were selected from the SDSS-DR9, among those having reliable photometry and accurate estimation of photometric redshifts. 27. On the non-evolution of the dependence of black hole masses on bolometric luminosities for QSOs

Abstract: There are extremely luminous quasi stellar objects (QSOs) at high redshift which are absent at low redshift. The lower luminosities at low redshifts can be understood as the external manifestation of either a lower Eddington ratio or a lower mass. To distinguish between both effects, we determine the possible dependence of masses and Eddington ratios of QSOs with a fixed luminosity as a function of redshifts; this avoids the Malmquist bias or any other selection effect. For the masses and Eddington ratios derived for a sample of QSOs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we model their evolution by a double linear fit separating the dependence on redshifts and luminosities. The validity of the fits and possible systematic effects were tested by the use of different estimators of masses or bolometric luminosities, and possible intergalactic extinction effects. The results do not show any significant evolution of black hole masses or Eddington ratios for equal luminosity QSOs. The black hole mass only depends on the bolometric luminosity without significant dependence on the redshift as M_{BH}(10^9 M_sun) = 3.4[L_{bol}(10^{47} erg/s})]^{0.65} on average for z<5. This must not be confused with the possible evolution in the formation of black holes in QSOs. The variations of environment might influence the formation of the black holes but not its subsequent accretion. It also leaves a question to be solved: Why are there not QSOs with very high mass at low redshift? Abstract: We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the members of three previously cataloged compact group (CG) candidates at redshifts z>0.3. These confirm spectroscopic redshifts compatible with being gravitationally bound structures at redshifts 0.3112, 0.3848 and 0.3643 respectively, and then they are the most distant CGs known with spectroscopic confirmation for all their members. The morphological and spectroscopic properties of all their galaxies indicate early types dominated by an old population of stars, with little star formation or nuclear activity. Most of the physical properties derived for the three groups are quite similar to the average properties of CGs at lower redshifts. In particular, from the velocities and positions of the respective members of each CG, we estimate short dynamic times. 29. The value of the fine structure constant over cosmological times

Abstract: The optical spectra of objects classified as QSOs in the SDSS DR6 are analyzed with the aim of determining the value of the fine structure constant in the past and then check for possible changes in the constant over cosmological timescales. The analysis is done by measuring the position of the fine structure lines of the [OIII] doublet (4959 and 5008) in QSO nebular emission. From the sample of QSOs at redshifts z < 0.8 a subsample was selected on the basis of the amplitude and width of the [OIII] lines. Two different method were used to determine the position of the lines of the [OIII] doublet, both giving similar results. Using a clean sample containing 1568 of such spectra, a value of Delta alpha /alpha=(+2.4 +-2.5) x 10^{-5} (in the range of redshifts 0-0.8) was determined. The use of a larger number of spectra allows a factor ~5 improvement on previous constraints based on the same method. On the whole, we find no evidence of changes in alpha on such cosmological timescales. The mean variation compatible with our results is 1/ Delta alpha/alpha=(+0.7 +- 0.7) x 10^{-14} yr^{-1}. The analysis was extended to the [NeIII] and [SII] doublets, although their usefulness is limited due to the fact that all these doublets in QSOs tend to be fainter than [OIII], and that some of them are affected by systematics., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures. 30. The spatial distribution of galaxies within the CMB cold spot in the Corona Borealis supercluster

Abstract: We study the spatial distribution and colours of galaxies within the region covered by the cold spot in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) recently detected by the Very Small Array (VSA; Genova-Santos et al. 2005, 2008) towards the Corona Borealis supercluster (CrB-SC). The spot is in the northern part of a region with a radius ~1 degree (~5 Mpc at the redshift of CrB-SC) enclosing the clusters Abell 2056, 2065, 2059 and 2073, and where the density of galaxies, excluding the contribution from those clusters, is ~2 times higher than the mean value in typical intercluster regions of the CrB-SC. Two of such clusters (Abell 2056 and 2065) are members of the CrB-SC, while the other two are in the background. This high density intercluster region is quite inhomogeneous, being the most remarkable feature a large concentration of galaxies in a narrow filament running from Abell 2065 with a length of ~35 arcmin (~3 Mpc at the redshift of CrB-SC) in the SW-NE direction. 31. Analysis of possible anomalies in the QSO distribution of the Flesch & Hardcastle catalogue

Abstract: AIMS. A recent catalogue by Flesch & Hardcastle presents two major anomalies in the spatial distribution of QSO candidates: i/ an apparent excess of such objects near bright galaxies, and ii/ an excess of very bright QSO candidates compared to random background expectations in several regions of the sky. Because anyone of these anomalies would be relevant in a cosmological context, we carried out an extensive analysis of the probabilities quoted in that catalogue. METHODS. We determine the nature and redshift of a subsample of 30 sources in that catalogue by analysing their optical spectra (another 11 candidates were identified from existing public databases). These have allowed us to statistically check the reliability of the probabilities QSO status quoted by Flesch & Hardcastle for their candidates. RESULTS. Only 12 of the 41 candidates turned out QSOs (7 of which have been identified here for the first time). CONCLUSIONS. The probabilities of the QSOs' being the candidates given by Flesch & Hardcastle are overestimated for m_B<17 and for objects projected near (<1 arcmin) bright galaxies. 32. COSMOSOMAS Observations of the CMB and Galactic Foregrounds at 11 GHz: Evidence for anomalous microwave emission at high Galactic Latitude

Abstract: We present observations with the new 11 GHz radiometer of the COSMOSOMAS experiment at the Teide Observatory (Tenerife). The sky region between 0 deg <= RA <= 360 deg and 26 deg <= DEC 49 deg (ca. 6500 square degrees) was observed with an angular resolution of 0.9 deg. Two orthogonal independent channels in the receiving system measured total power signals from linear polarizations with a 2 GHz bandwidth. Maps with an average sensitivity of 50 microK per beam have been obtained for each channel. At high Galactic latitude (|b|>30deg) the 11 GHz data are found to contain the expected cosmic microwave background as well as extragalactic radiosources, galactic synchrotron and free-free emission, and a dust-correlated component which is very likely of galactic origin. At the angular scales allowed by the window function of the experiment, the dust-correlated component presents an amplitude \Delta T aprox. 9-13 microK while the CMB signal is of order 27 microK. The spectral behaviour of the dust-correlated signal is examined in the light of previous COSMOSOMAS data at 13-17 GHz and WMAP data at 22-94 GHz in the same sky region. We detect a flattening in the spectral index of this signal below 20 GHz which rules out synchrotron radiation as being responsible for the emission. This anomalous dust emission can be described by a combination of free-free emission and spinning dust models with a flux density peaking around 20 GHz., Comment: 17 pages, 10 tables, 20 figures. 33. First tentative detection of anisotropy in the QSO distribution around nearby edge-on spiral galaxies

Abstract: AIMS. To check whether the polar angle distribution of QSOs around nearby spiral galaxies is isotropic or not. METHODS. A statistical analysis of the polar angle distribution of large samples of QSOs from the SDSS survey and Monte Carlo simulations to calculate their significance are carried out. RESULTS. There is a clear excess of QSOs near the minor axis with respect to the major axis of nearby edge-on spiral galaxies, significant at a level 3.5-sigma up to angular distances of 3 deg. (or ~1.7 Mpc) from the centre of each galaxy. The significance is increased to 3.9-sigma with the z>0.5 QSOs, and it reaches 4.8-sigma if we include galaxies whose circles of radius 3 degrees are covered by the SDSS in more than 98% (instead of 100%) of the area. CONCLUSIONS. Gravitational lensing in the halo of nearby galaxies or extinction seem insufficient to explain the observed anisotropic distribution of QSOs. The anisotropic distribution agrees qualitatively with the predictions of Arp's models, which claim that QSOs are ejected by galaxies along the rotation axis, although Arp's prediction give a distance of the QSOs ~3 times smaller than that found here. In any case, a chance fluctuation, although highly improbable, might be a possibility rather than a true anisotropy, and the present results should be corroborated by other groups and samples, so we prefer to consider it as just a first tentative detection., Comment: 16 pages, accepted to be published in A&A

35. Toward a Clean Sample of Ultra-Luminous X-ray Sources

Abstract: CONTEXT. Observational follow-up programmes for the characterization of ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) require the construction of clean samples of such sources in which the contamination by foreground/background sources is minimum. AIMS. In this article we calculate the degree of foreground/background contaminants among the ULX sample candidates in the Colbert & Ptak (2002) catalogue and compare these computations with available spectroscopical identifications. METHODS. We use statistics based on known densities of X-ray sources and AGN/QSOs selected in the optical. The analysis is done individually for each parent galaxy. The existing identifications of the optical counterparts are compiled from the literature. RESULTS. More than a half of the ULXs, within twice the distance of the major axis of the 25 mag/arcsec$^2$ isophote from RC3 nearby galaxies and with X-ray luminosities $L_X$[2-10 keV] $\ge 10^{39}$ erg/s, are expected to be high redshift background QSOs. Three maps have been obtained at 12.7, 14.7 and 16.3 GHz covering 9000 square degrees each with a resolution of ~1 degree and with sensitivities 49, 59 and 115 muK per beam respectively. These data in conjuction with the WMAP first year maps have revealed that the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is the dominant astronomical signal at high galatic latitude in the three COSMOSOMAS channels with an average amplitude of 29.7+/- 1.0 \muK (68% c.l. not including calibration errors). This value is in agreement with the predicted CMB signal in the COSMOSOMAS maps using the best fit Lambda-CDM model to the WMAP power spectrum. Cross-correlation of COSMOSOMAS data with the DIRBE map at 100 \mu m shows the existence of a common signal with amplitude 7.4+/- 1.1, 7.5+/- 1.1, and 6.5+/-2.3 muK in the 12.7, 14.7 and 16.3 GHz COSMOSOMAS maps at |b|>30^\deg. Using the WMAP data we find this DIRBE correlated signal rises from high to low frequencies flattening below ~20 GHz. At higher galactic latitudes the average amplitude of the correlated signal with the DIRBE maps decreases slightly. The frequency behaviour of the COSMOSOMAS/WMAP correlated signal with DIRBE is not compatible with the expected tendency for thermal dust. A study of the H-alpha emission maps do not support free-free as a major contributor to that signal. Our results provide evidence of a new galactic foreground with properties compatible with those predicted by the spinning dust models., Comment: 11 pages, 21 figures. Submitted to MNRAS. 37. Research on candidates for non-cosmological redshifts

Abstract: (Abridged:) The paradox of apparent optical associations of galaxies with very different redshifts, the so-called anomalous redshift problem, is around 35 years old, but is still without a clear solution and is surprisingly ignored by most of the astronomical community. Statistical correlations among the positions of these galaxies have been pointed out by several authors. Gravitational lensing by dark matter has been proposed as the cause of these correlations, although this seems to be insufficient to explain them and does not work at all for correlations with the brightest and nearest galaxies. Some of these cases may be just fortuitous associations in which background objects are close in the sky to a foreground galaxy, although the statistical mean correlations remain to be explained and some lone objects have very small probabilities of being a projection of background objects. The sample of discordant redshift associations given in Arp's atlas is indeed quite large, and most of the objects remain to be analysed thoroughly. For about 5 years, we have been running a project to observe some of these cases in detail, and some new anomalies have been added to those already known; For instance, in some exotic configurations such as NGC 7603 or NEQ3, which can even show bridges connecting four object with very different redshifts. Not only QSOs but also emission-line galaxies in general are found to take part in this kind of event. 38. Detection of anomalous microwave emission in the Perseus molecular cloud with the COSMOSOMAS experiment

Abstract: We present direct evidence for anomalous microwave emission in the Perseus molecular cloud, which shows a clear rising spectrum from 11 to 17 GHz in the data of the COSMOSOMAS experiment. By extending the frequency coverage using WMAP maps convolved with the COSMOSOMAS scanning pattern we reveal a peak flux density of 42 (+/-) 4 Jy at 22 GHz integrated over an extended area of 1.65 x 1.0 deg centered on RA = 55.4 (+/-) 0.1 deg and Dec = 31.8 (+/-) 0.1 deg (J2000). The flux density that we measure at this frequency is nearly an order of magnitude higher than can be explained in terms of normal galactic emission processes (synchrotron, free-free and thermal dust). An extended IRAS dust feature G159.6-18.5 is found near this position and no bright unresolved source which could be an ultracompact HII region or gigahertz peaked source could be found. 39. The Nature of Ultra Luminous X-ray Sources

Abstract: We present spectroscopic observations of six optical counterparts of intermediate luminosity X-ray sources (ULXs) around nearby galaxies. The spectra of the six objects show the presence of broad emission features. The identification of these allow us to classify all of the objects as quasars at higher redshift than their assigned parent galaxy. This is one of the first and largest identifications of such objects using unambigous optical spectral features. These results, in conjuction with previous similar identifications of other sources, indicate that high redshift quasars represent an important fraction of catalogued ULX sources. 41. Formation and Evolution of Structures in the Universe

Abstract: We summarize our work on structures in different stages of aggregation, and spanning a wide range in redshift. We emphasize our work on high resdhift clusters. This comprises the analysis of ~7 square degrees using deep images with several broad-band optical filters. We plan to complement these with near IR observations in 4 m telescopes. Preliminary results of the analysis in a field of 35 x 35 arcmin^2 indicate the detection of several candidates to be clusters at redshifst z> 0.5. 42. The Properties of Satellite Galaxies in External Systems. II. Photometry and Colors

Abstract: In this second paper dedicated to the study of satellite galaxies we present broad-band photometry in the B, V, R and I filters of 49 satellite galaxies orbiting giant isolated spiral galaxies. First analysis of the properties of these objects are presented by means of color--color and color--magnitude diagrams for early- and late-type satellites. Although we find differences in the slope of the V-I vs. Mv color magnitude diagram, as a whole, the relations are in agreement with the trends known to date for galaxies of similar magnitudes in nearby clusters of galaxies. Comparison with the relations found for satellites in the Local Group allows us to sample better the bright end of the luminosity function of satellite galaxies and extends for brighter objects the validity of the color--magnitude relation found for dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. 43. QSO + galaxy association and discrepant redshifts in NEQ3

Abstract: Spectroscopy and deep imaging of the group NEQ3 are presented. This system is formed by three compact objects with relative separations of ~2.6 and ~2.8 arcsec, and a lenticular galaxy at ~17 arcsec from the geometric centre of the group. A diffuse filament is located on a line joining the three compact objects and the main galaxy. Analysis of these observations confirms the redshift previously known for three of the objects (z=0.1239 for the main galaxy, and z=0.1935 and 0.1939 for two of the compact objects). We have also determined the previously unknown redshift of the third compact object as z=0.2229. Using the relative strength and width of the main spectral lines, we have classified the compact objects as two HII galaxies and one QSO (the object at z=0.1935). With cross-correlation techniques, we have tentatively estimated the redshift of the filament as z=0.19 (although a weaker component also appears at z=0.12) so that it is probably associated with the halo of the two compact objects at this redshift. The two objects at redshift ~0.19 represent possibly one of the more clear examples of starburst (and perhaps QSO activity) driven by interaction. These, and the relation between these two objects and the other two at (~0.12 and ~0.22) make the nature of this system intriguing, being difficult to explain the whole association on conventional scenarios., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, ApJ Letter accepted

44. The field surrounding NGC 7603: cosmological or non-cosmological redshifts?

Abstract: We present new observations of the field surrounding the Seyfert galaxy NGC 7603, where four galaxies with different redshifts--NGC 7603 (z=0.029), NGC 7603B (z=0.057) and two fainter emission line galaxies (z=0.245 and z=0.394)--are apparently connected by a narrow filament, leading to a possible case of anomalous redshift. The observations comprise broad and narrow band imaging and intermediate resolution spectroscopy of some of the objects in the field. The new data confirm the redshift of the two emission-line objects found within the filament connecting NGC 7603 and NGC 7603B, and settles their type with better accuracy. Although both objects are point-like in ground based images, using HST archive images we show that the objects have structure with a FWHM=0.3-0.4 arcsec. This and the relative strength and width of the main spectral lines allow us to classify these as HII galaxies with very vigorous star formation, while the rest of the filament and NGC 7603B lack star formation. We delineate the halo of NGC 7603 out to 26.2 mag/square arcsec in the Sloan r band filter and find evidence for strong internal distortions. New narrow emission line galaxies at z=0.246, 0.117 and 0.401 are also found at respectively 0.8, 1.5 and 1.7 arcmin to the West of the filament within the fainter contour of this halo. The probability of three background galaxies of any type with apparent B-magnitudes up to 16.6, 21.1 and 22.1 (the observed magnitudes, extinction correction included) being randomly projected on the filament of the fourth galaxy (NGC 7603) is computed resulting ~ 3 x 10^(-9)., Comment: 34 pages, 9 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics accepted

45. New optical spectra and general discussion on the nature of ULX's

Abstract: We present spectroscopic observations of three Ultra Luminous X-ray sources (ULX's). Two of them are very close to the active galaxy NGC 720 and the other is near NGC 1073. The two around NGC 720 turn out to be quasars at z=0.964 and z= 2.216, the one near NGC 1073 seems to be associated to an HII region at the redshift of NGC 1073. We concentrate our analysis on the two quasars and analyze them in conjunction with a set of 20 additional X-ray sources close to nearby galaxies which also fit the criteria of ULX's and which also have been identified as quasars of medium to high redshift. This sample shows an unusually large fraction of rare BL Lac type objects. The high redshifts of these ULX's and their close proximity to their low redshift, supposedly parent galaxies is a surprising result in the light of standard models. 46. Quantitative Morphology of Galaxies in the Core of the Coma Cluster

Abstract: We present a quantitative morphological analysis of 187 galaxies in a region covering the central 0.28 square degrees of the Coma cluster. Structural parameters from the best-fitting Sersic r^{1/n} bulge plus, where appropriate, exponential disc model, are tabulated here. This sample is complete down to a magnitude of R=17 mag. By examining the Edwards et al. (2002) compilation of galaxy redshifts in the direction of Coma, we find that 163 of the 187 galaxies are Coma cluster members, and the rest are foreground and background objects. For the Coma cluster members, we have studied differences in the structural and kinematic properties between early- and late-type galaxies, and between the dwarf and giant galaxies. Analysis of the elliptical galaxies reveals correlations among the structural parameters similar to those previously found in the Virgo and Fornax clusters. Comparing the structural properties of the Coma cluster disc galaxies with disc galaxies in the field, we find evidence for an environmental dependence: the scale lengths of the disc galaxies in Coma are 30% smaller. A kinematical analysis shows marginal differences between the velocity distributions of ellipticals with Sersic index n<2 (dwarfs) and those with n>2 (giants); the dwarf galaxies having a greater (cluster) velocity dispersion. Finally, our analysis of all 421 background galaxies reveals a non-uniform distribution in redshift with contrasts in density ~3, characterized by a void extending from ~10,000 to ~20,000 km s^{-1}, and two dense and extended structures centred at ~20,000 and ~47,000 km s^{-1}., Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

47. Motion properties of satellites around external spiral galaxies

We find an excess (56%) of prograde satellites over retrograde, which basically holds for all angular displacements from the primary major axis. 48. A Correlation between Light Concentration and Cluster Local Density for Elliptical Galaxies

Abstract: Using photometric and redshift data for the Virgo and Coma clusters, we present evidence for a correlation between the light concentration of elliptical galaxies (including dwarf ellipticals) and the local 3-D (i.e. non-projected) density of the clusters: more concentrated ellipticals are located in denser regions. The null hypothesis (i.e. the absence of any relation) is rejected at a significance level better than 99.9%. In order to explain the observed relation, a power law relating the galaxy light concentration and the cluster 3-D density is proposed. We study how the projection effects affect the form and dispersion of the data-points in the light concentration-projected density diagram. 49. New light and shadows on Stephan's Quintet

Abstract: We present deep broad-band R and narrow-band Halpha images of Stephan's Quintet. The observations in the R band show that the diffuse halo of the Stephan's Quintet is larger than previously thought and extends out to NGC 7320C. However, we have not found emission connecting NGC 7331 and NGC 7320 to R ~ 26.7 mag/arcsec^2 (at more than 3-sigma level), so there is no direct evidence up to this limiting magnitude of a relation between the peculiar kinematical structure found in NGC 7331 and an ongoing or past interaction between this galaxy and NGC 7320. The Halpha emission at high-velocity (6000-7000 km/s) is distributed in a diffuse structure running NS between NGC 7319 and NGC 7318B and in some other more concentrated features. Some of these are located in the tidal tails produced by the interaction between the galaxies of the group. With the Halpha images we have made a two-dimensional velocity map which helps to identify the origin of each structure detected. This map does not show features at intermediate velocities between the high- and low-redshift members of the group. This is in agreement with the standard scenario in which the apparent proximity of NGC 7320 to the rest of the galaxies of the Quintet is merely a projection effect. The only point which is unclear in this interpretation, is an Halpha filament which is seen extending throughout NGC 7320 with velocity at 6500 km/s instead of the 800 km/s expected for this galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophys. 50. Triaxial stellar systems following the r^{1/n} luminosity law: an analytical mass-density expression, gravitational torques and the bulge/disc interplay

Abstract: We have investigated the structural and dynamical properties of triaxial stellar systems whose surface brightness profiles follow the r^{1/n} luminosity law - extending the analysis of Ciotti (1991) who explored the properties of spherical r^{1/n} systems. A new `analytical' expression that accurately reproduces the spatial (i.e. deprojected) luminosity density profiles (error < 0.1%) is presented for detailed modelling of the Sersic family of luminosity profiles. We evaluate both the symmetric and the non--axisymmetric components of the gravitational potential and force, and compute the torques as a function of position. For a given triaxiality, stellar systems with smaller values of n have a greater non-axisymmetric gravitational field component. We also explore the strength of the non-axisymmetric forces produced by bulges with differing n and triaxiality on systems having a range of bulge-to-disc ratios. The increasing disc-to-bulge ratio with increasing galaxy type (decreasing n) is found to heavily reduce the amplitude of the non-axisymmetric terms, and therefore reduce the possibility that triaxial bulges in late-type systems may be the mechanism or perturbation for nonsymmetric structures in the disc. Using seeing-convolved r^{1/n}-bulge plus exponential-disc fits to the K-band data from a sample of 80 nearby disc galaxies, we probe the relations between galaxy type, Sersic index n and the bulge-to-disc luminosity ratio. These relations are shown to be primarily a consequence of the relation between n and the total bulge luminosity. In the K-band, the trend of decreasing bulge-to-disc luminosity ratio along the spiral Hubble sequence is predominantly, although not entirely, a consequence of the change in the total bulge luminosity; the trend between the total disc luminosity and Hubble type is much weaker., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS accepted
