1. Magneto-transport studies of some high temperature superconductors

Abstract

In this thesis the magneto-transport properties of two classes of high temperature superconductors, the cuprates and the pnictides, are investigated and compared to some existing models. A range of theories exist for the magneto-resistivity (MR) of cuprates in the normal state. Anderson’s early theory uses two distinct scattering times for the in-plane resistivity and Hall angle to describe magneto-transport while several Fermi Liquid (FL)-like models use a single strongly k-dependent scattering time to account for the anomalous properties observed in the normal state. Here we present work measuring the normal state MR of BSCO single crystals, which show interesting results not well accounted for by theory. In pure BSCO the normal state MR appears to follow a T-4 power law at temperatures sufficiently high that the role of superconducting fluctuations will be minimised, as seen previously in Zn doped YBCO.  Upon replacing 2% of the Cu atoms with Fe or Co, the MR is substantially reduced and this T-4 dependence is no longer clearly observed. This is attributed to scattering caused by the magnetic moments of the dopants. These results are in conflict with Anderson’s theory and are better supported by a FL like model. There is still much uncertainty about magneto-transport in the pnictides largely due to their recent discovery. We present MR data for two of the undoped parent pnicitide compounds. SrFe2As2 and CaFe2As2 at a range of temperatures below Ts. We observe a large positive MR and compare this to previous work including an early model for pnicitide magneto-transport proposed by Zheng et al. We find a reasonable fit but question some of the basic assumptions of this model.

Abstract

This study examined how Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale scores changed in individuals with autism as a function of age and initial IQ. Results revealed that subjects (N=440) improved with age in all domains. The rate of growth on Communication and Daily Living Skills sub-tests was related to initial IQ while rate of growth in Social Skills was not. (Author)

Abstract

We are studying the behavior of serf-breaking, high-voltage water switches for the Z refurbishment project. In Z-20, three or four water switches in parallel are charged to 4 MV in ~220 ns. The water gap between switch electrodes is 13-15 cm, and the enhancement of the positive and negative electrodes is varied to study time-evolution of the breakdown arcs, current sharing, and switch simultaneity. In addition to the standard electrical diagnostics (V, I), we are looking at one or more of the switches during the breakdown phase with two optical diagnostics: a streak camera and a fast framing camera. The streak camera has ~1-ns resolution, and the framing camera provides seven frames with >5 ns exposure times. For identical electric fields, the streamers originating on the positive electrode form earlier and move more rapidly than the streamers originating on the negative electrode. We observe four distinct phases in the closure of the water switches that depend on the macroscopic electric fields in the water: 1) No streamers propagate at E-fields below ~100 kV/cm from positive electrodes or voltages below ~140 kV/cm for negative electrodes; 2) streamers propagate with constant velocity between 100 and ~300 kV/cm; 3) above 300 kV/cm, the streamer velocities become linearly proportional to the electric field; 4) above 600 kV/cm, the velocity of streamers from the negative electrodes appears to saturate at ~100 cm/[micro]s. The velocity of the streamers from the positive electrode continues to increase with E-field, reaching ~1% of the speed of fight when the switch reaches closure. 23. Stopping them starting: evaluation of a community-based project to discourage teenage smoking in Cardiff

Abstract

The project in Cardiff, Wales, UK, targeted young people aged between 11 and 12 to try to stop them starting to smoke. Literature was issued in 23 schools, four of which were selected for specific intervention. Specialist workers were enlisted to promote the no-smoking message in these schools, and in youth clubs and sports centres. Young people in the four target schools appeared less likely to start smoking. However, if prevention is given a low priority by health education groups and extra resources are not made available, the long-term effects of prevention projects will be limited.

Contains fulltext : 88779.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) BACKGROUND: Serum CA125 concentration often rises several months before clinical or symptomatic relapse in women with ovarian cancer. In the MRC OV05/EORTC 55955 collaborative trial, we aimed to establish the benefits of early treatment on the basis of increased CA125 concentrations compared with delayed treatment on the basis of clinical recurrence. METHODS: Women with ovarian cancer in complete remission after first-line platinum-based chemotherapy and a normal CA125 concentration were registered for this randomised controlled trial. Clinical examination and CA125 measurement were done every 3 months. Patients and investigators were masked to CA125 results, which were monitored by coordinating centres. If CA125 concentration exceeded twice the upper limit of normal, patients were randomly assigned (1:1) by minimisation to early or delayed chemotherapy. Patients and clinical sites were informed of allocation to early treatment, and treatment was started as soon as possible within 28 days of the increased CA125 measurement. Patients assigned to delayed treatment continued masked CA125 measurements, with treatment commencing at clinical or symptomatic relapse. All patients were treated according to standard local practice. The primary outcome was overall survival. Analysis was by intention to treat. This study is registered, ISRCTN87786644. FINDINGS: 1442 patients were registered for the trial, of whom 529 were randomly assigned to treatment groups and were included in our analysis (265 early, 264 delayed). With a median follow-up of 56.9 months (IQR 37.4-81.8) from randomisation and 370 deaths (186 early, 184 delayed), there was no evidence of a difference in overall survival between early and delayed treatment (HR 0.98, 95% CI 0.80-1.20, p=0.85). Median survival from randomisation was 25.7 months (95% CI 23.0-27.9) for patients on early treatment and 27.1 months (22.8-30.9) for those on delayed treatment. INTERPRETATION: Our findings showed no evidence of a survival benefit with early treatment of relapse on the basis of a raised CA125 concentration alone, and therefore the value of routine measurement of CA125 in the follow-up of patients with ovarian cancer who attain a complete response after first-line treatment is not proven. Abstract

The question of whether platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy can improve outcomes in patients with early-stage epithelial ovarian cancer is an important one. We carried out a multicenter, open randomized trial to determine whether adjuvant chemotherapy would improve overall survival and prolong recurrence-free survival in women with early-stage epithelial ovarian cancer.

Abstract

This chapter investigates whether a global small world of business owners and corporate directors exists. It evaluates the descriptive power of the tools of the new science of networks to understand governance networks and examines how corporate control had changed in the 1990s and to whose advantage. The findings indicate that the global transnational graph is still strongly structured by national governance networks and that owners and directors are strongly connected to their national markets but loosely connected to other national governance networks.

Abstract

The purpose of this systematic study was to provide an up to date and reliable quantitative summary of the relative benefits of various types of chemotherapy (non-platinum vs platinum, single-agent vs combination and carboplatin vs cisplatin) in the treatment of advanced ovarian cancer. Also, to investigate whether well-defined patient subgroups benefit more or less from cisplatin- or carboplatin-based therapy. Meta-analyses were based on updated individual patient data from all available randomized controlled trials (published and unpublished), including 37 trials, 5667 patients and 4664 deaths. The results suggest that platinum-based chemotherapy is better than non-platinum therapy, show a trend in favour of platinum combinations over single-agent platinum, and suggest that cisplatin and carboplatin are equally effective. There is no good evidence that cisplatin is more or less effective than carboplatin in any particular subgroup of patients. Images Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3

Abstract

The management of uterine sarcomas continues to present many difficulties. Primary surgery is the optimal treatment but the role of post-operative radiation remains uncertain. In the mid-1980s, the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Gynaecological Cancer Group Study proposed a trial to evaluate adjuvant radiotherapy, as previous non-randomised studies had suggested a survival advantage and improved local control when post-operative radiation was administered. The study opened in 1987 taking 13 years to accrue 224 patients. All uterine sarcoma subtypes were permitted. Patients were required to have undergone as a minimum, TAH and BSO and wahsings (166 patients) but nodal sampling was optional. There were 103 leiomyosarcomas (LMS), 91 carcinosarcomas (CS) and 28 endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS). Patients were randomised to either observation or pelvic radiation, 51Gy in 28 fractions over 5 weeks. Hundred and twelve were recruited to each arm. The initial analysis has shown a reduction in local relapse (14 versus 24, p =0.004) but no effect on either OS or PFS. No unexpected toxicity was seen in the radiation arm. No difference in either overall or disease-free survival was demonstrated but there is an increased local control for the CS patients receiving radiation but without any benefit for LMS. Prognostic factor analysis shows that stage, age and histological subtype were important predictors of behaviour which may explain differences between CS and LMS. CS appears to show more kinship to poorly differentiated endometrial carcinomas in behaviour. LMS did not show the same benefit from radiation. These results will help shape future management and clinical trials in uterine sarcomas.

Abstract

Water constitutes approximately 60% of the healthy adult human body. Water balance in the body is regulated by the kidneys, which excrete either concentrated or dilute urine in accordance with physiological needs. This article describes the mechanisms by which the kidneys vary water excretion independent of excretion of other physiological important substrates such as sodium, potassium, hydrogen, and urea. These mechanisms involve the loops of Henle, the distal tubules, the collecting ducts, and the vasa recta, and are under the control of vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone).

Abstract

Research suggests that private physician providers of office abortions and the women who seek their services are not included in nationwide surveys of abortion statistics. This study describes the demographic characteristics of private physicians and the prevalence of abortions performed in their offices in Los Angeles County, California, a state in which office abortions are prohibited by law. Factors that influence physicians' decisions to provide the service, as well as the age and ethnicity of the office abortion recipients, are examined. Of 1,004 California Medical Association members who practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Los Angeles County during 1990, 49% returned anonymous, confidential surveys. Seventy percent of physicians had performed at least one abortion in California, and 29% were currently providing this service in their offices. Physician gender, age, ethnicity, and religion were associated with performing abortions. The average abortion patient was not young and ethnic, but White, middle-class, and in her mid- to late twenties. The implications of these findings are discussed.
