Here we present a general approach of calibrating transient transport models to tritium concentrations in river waters developed for the MT3DMS/MODFLOW model of the Western Lake Taupo catchment, New Zealand. Tritium is a time-dependent tracer with radioactive half-life of 12.32 yr. In the transport model, the tritium input (measured in rain) passes through the groundwater system, and the modelled tritium concentrations are compared to the measured tritium concentrations in the river outlets for the Waihaha, Whanganui, Whareroa, Kuratau and Omori river catchments from 2000-2007. For the Kuratau River, tritium was also measured between 1960 and 1970, which allowed us to fine-tune the transport model. In order to incorporate all surface flows from rivers to small streams, an 80m uniform grid cell size was selected in the steady-state MODFLOW model for the model area of 1072 km². The groundwater flow model was first calibrated to groundwater levels and stream flow observations. Then, the transport model was calibrated to the measured tritium concentrations in the river waters. The MT3DMS model results show good agreement with the measured tritium values in all five river catchments. Finally, the calibrated MT3DMS model is applied to simulate groundwater ages that are used to construct groundwater age distributions for the river catchments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regional finite-difference models tend to have large cell sizes, often on the order of 1–2 km on a side. Although the regional flow patterns in deeper formations may be adequately represented by such a model, the intricate surface water and groundwater interactions in the shallower layers are not. Several stream reaches and nearby wells may occur in a single cell, precluding any meaningful modeling of the surface water and groundwater interactions between the individual features. We propose to replace the upper MODFLOW layer or layers, in which the surface water and groundwater interactions occur, by an analytic element model (GFLOW) that does not employ a model grid; instead, it represents wells and surface waters directly by the use of point-sinks and line-sinks. For many practical cases it suffices to provide GFLOW with the vertical leakage rates calculated in the original coarse MODFLOW model in order to obtain a good representation of surface water and groundwater interactions. However, when the combined transmissivities in the deeper (MODFLOW) layers dominate, the accuracy of the GFLOW solution diminishes. For those cases, an iterative coupling procedure, whereby the leakages between the GFLOW and MODFLOW model are updated, appreciably improves the overall solution, albeit at considerable computational cost. The coupled GFLOW–MODFLOW model is applicable to relatively large areas, in many cases to the entire model domain, thus forming an attractive alternative to local grid refinement or inset models. In the vicinity of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP), the cooling pond (CP) was an artificially maintained reservoir with water levels regulated to 7 m above the Pripyat River until May 2014, when its pumps stopped operating, resulting in a natural drawdown. To investigate the surface-groundwater system before and after the drawdown, we evaluated the spatial and temporal changes in 90 Sr and 137 Cs radionuclide concentrations and groundwater levels in the shallow unconfined aquifer near the ChNPP from 2010 to 2019. Additionally, we compared water levels and 90 Sr concentrations in Azbuchin Lake, wetlands inside the CP, and the Pripyat River. Using three-year averages before (2011-2013) and after (2017-2019) the drawdown period, we found that 90 Sr concentrations significantly increased up to 10 2 kBq/m 3 in the Pripyat River floodplain, north of ChNPP, exceeding the WHO drinking water guideline of 10 kBq/m 3 . In contrast 137 Cs concentrations ranged consistently between 10 and 100 Bq/m 3 . The groundwater levels decreased over 50 cm at approximately 65 % of shallow monitoring wells and up to 6 m near the CP. The 90 Sr concentration increases in some wells at the Pripyat River floodplain were associated with decreased dilution rates from the CP due to the reduced CP leakage, causing changes in groundwater flow direction and decreases in groundwater velocity. From the new finding of this study that the drawdown increased 90 Sr concentrations near the floodplain, we estimated the 90 Sr flux and contribution to the Pripyat River and the 90 Sr contribution did not change significantly after the drawdown. Tritium dating requires a good understanding of the tritium and water inputs into hydrologic systems, including their main trends due to latitudinal, seasonal and altitudinal effects. Although tritium reached ambient levels at the end of the 20th century, tritium released from nuclear facilities and bomb tests since then has the potential to confound use of tritium for age dating. We therefore collected precipitation and snowpack samples for tritium analysis to confirm that tritium levels in Japanese precipitation had not exceeded ambient levels following the North Korean nuclear tests in January 6th 2016 and September 3rd 2017. As the result, the highest tritium concentration was 5.52(±0.27)TU at samples collected from January 8 to 11th at one Honshu and four Hokkaido locations and samples collected at six Honshu locations had 8.01(±1.5)TU from September 6 to 19th 2017. Confirming ambient tritium concentrations after both events we investigated the latitude tritium effect at selected coastal stations in Asia, indicating a break of latitude trend around Tokyo area, and established the latitude scaling factors to the north and south of the Tokyo area data. The seasonal trend was investigated during the winter-spring 2016 in precipitation samples confirming the higher spring tritium compared with winter continental tritium values. The altitude effect on tritium and stable ( 18 O and 2 H) isotopes was observed in Hokkaido snowpack, which had tritium concentrations ranging between 4.08 and 5.93 TU during March-April, and demonstrated two trends for western and central Hokkaido mountain ranges. Using established latitude and altitude scaling factors with the long-term continuous time-series of monthly Tokyo area tritium we estimated the annual weighted tritium at 110 meteorological stations in Japan with monthly precipitation demonstrating the applicability of this approach for future tritium-tracer studies across Asia., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Noxious weeds threaten the Sheyenne National Grassland (SNG) ecosystem and therefore herbicides have been used for control. To protect groundwater quality, the herbicide application is restricted to areas where the water table is less than 10 feet (3.05 m) below the ground surface in highly permeable soils, or less than 6 feet (1.83 m) below the ground surface in low permeable soils. A local MODFLOW model was extracted from a regional GFLOW analytic element model and used to develop depth-to-groundwater maps in the SNG that are representative for the particular time frame of herbicide applications. These maps are based on a modeled groundwater table and a digital elevation model (DEM). The accuracy of these depth-to-groundwater maps is enhanced by an artificial neural networks (ANNs) interpolation scheme that reduces residuals at 48 monitoring wells. The combination of groundwater modeling and ANN improved depth-to-groundwater maps, which in turn provided more informed decisions about where herbicides can or cannot be safely applied., (Published 2012.
