Abstract

Numerous domains, in fundamental research as well as in applications, require the study of reactions induced by neutrons with energies from few MeV up to few tens of MeV. Reliable measurements also are necessary to improve the evaluated databases used by nuclear transport codes. This energy range covers a large number of topics like transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. A new facility called Neutrons For Science (NFS) is being built for this purpose on the GANIL site at Caen (France). NFS is composed of a pulsed neutron beam for time-of-flight facility as well as irradiation stations for cross-section measurements. Neutrons will be produced by the interaction of deuteron and proton beams, delivered by the SPIRAL-2 linear accelerator, with thick or thin converters made of beryllium or lithium. Continuous and quasi-mono-energetic spectra will be available at NFS up to 40 MeV. In this fast energy region, the neutron flux is expected to be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than at other existing time-of-flight facilities. In addition, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will allow performing cross-section measurements by the activation technique. After a description of the facility and its characteristics, the experiments to be performed in the short and medium term will be presented.

Abstract

Over the past years an experimental programme has been run at the neutron beam of The Svedberg Laboratory with the aim to study light-ion production induced by 96 and 175 MeV neutrons for a wide variety of targets. The measurements have been conducted using the Medley facility which allows measurement of p, d, t, He-3 and alpha production at fixed angles (from 20 to 160 degrees in steps of 20 degrees) over a wide dynamic range. An overview of the results obtained at the now finished campaign at 96 MeV will be given. Since 2007 we have been running at 175 MeV with C, O, Si, Fe, Bi and U as target material. Preliminary results from these measurements will be shown and compared to model calculations with Talys-1.2. We also summarize the Medley measurements of elastic np and nd scattering and of angular distributions of fission fragments.

Abstract

Nuclear data for neutron-induced reactions in the intermediate energy range of 20 to 200 MeV are of great importance for the development of nuclear reaction codes since little data exist in that range. Also several different applications benefit from such data, notably accelerator-driven incineration of nuclear waste. The Medley setup was used for a series of measurements of p, d, t, $^3$He and $\alpha$-particle production by 175 MeV quasi-mono-energetic neutrons on various target nuclei. The measurements were performed at the The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden. Eight detector telescopes placed at angles between 20$^\circ$ and 160$^\circ$ were used. Medley uses the $\Delta E$-$\Delta E$-$E$ technique to discriminate among the particle types and is able to measure double-differential cross sections over a wide range of particle energies. This paper briefly describes the experimental setup, summarizes the data analysis and reports on recent changes in the previously reported preliminary data set on bismuth. Experimental data are compared with INCL4.5-Abla07, MCNP6 using CEM03.03, TALYS and PHITS model calculations as well as with nuclear data evaluations. Abstract

At the IGISOL-JYFLTRAP facility, fission mass yields can be studied at high precision. Fission fragments from a U target are passing through a Ni foil and entering a gas filled chamber. The collected fragments are guided through a mass separator to a Penning trap where their masses are identified. This simulation work focuses on how different fission fragment properties (mass, charge and energy) affect the stopping efficiency in the gas cell. In addition, different experimental parameters are varied (e. g. U and Ni thickness and He gas pressure) to study their impact on the stopping efficiency. The simulations were performed using the Geant4 package and the SRIM code. The main results suggest a small variation in the stopping efficiency as a function of mass, charge and kinetic energy. It is predicted that heavy fragments are stopped about 9% less efficiently than the light fragments. However it was found that the properties of the U, Ni and the He gas influences this behavior. 5. Propagation of nuclear data uncertainties for ELECTRA burn-up calculations

Abstract

The European Lead-Cooled Training Reactor (ELECTRA) has been proposed as a training reactor for fast systems within the Swedish nuclear program. It is a low-power fast reactor cooled by pure liquid lead. In this work, we propagate the uncertainties in Pu-239 transport data to uncertainties in the fuel inventory of ELECTRA during the reactor life using the Total Monte Carlo approach (TMC). Within the TENDL project the nuclear models input parameters were randomized within their uncertainties and 740 Pu-239 nuclear data libraries were generated. These libraries are used as inputs to reactor codes, in our case SERPENT, to perform uncertainty analysis of nuclear reactor inventory during burn-up. The uncertainty in the inventory determines uncertainties in: the long-term radio-toxicity, the decay heat, the evolution of reactivity parameters, gas pressure and volatile fission product content. In this work, a methodology called fast TMC is utilized, which reduces the overall calculation time. The uncertainty in the long-term radiotoxicity, decay heat, gas pressure and volatile fission products were found to be insignificant. However, the uncertainty of some minor actinides were observed to be rather large and therefore their impact on multiple recycling should be investigated further. It was also found that, criticality benchmarks can be used to reduce inventory uncertainties due to nuclear data. 6. Measuring light-ion production and fission cross sections versus elastic np-scattering at the upcoming NFS facility

Abstract

The Medley setup is planned to be moved to and used at the new neutron facility NFS where measurements of light-ion production and fission cross-sections are planned at 1-40 MeV. Medley has eight detector telescopes providing Delta E-Delta E-E data, each consisting of two silicon detectors and a CsI(Tl) detector at the back. The telescope setup is rotatable and can be made to cover any angle. Medley has previously been used in many measurements at The Svedberg Laboratory (TSL) in Uppsala mainly with a quasi-mono-energetic neutron beam at 96 and 175 MeV. To be able to do measurements at NFS, which will have a white neutron beam, Medley needs to detect the reaction products with a high temporal resolution providing the ToF of the primary neutron. In this paper we discuss the design of the Medley upgrade along with simulations of the setup. 7. Status report on the analysis of inelastic neutron scattering from carbon, iron, yttrium and lead at 96 MeV

Abstract

This work is part of an effort to provide more experimental data for the (n,n'x) reaction. The experiments were carried out at The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, at the quasi-mono-energetic neutron beam of 96 MeV, before the facility was upgraded in 2004. Using an extended data analysis of data primarily intended for measuring elastic neutron scattering only, it was found to be possible to extract information on the inelastic scattering from several nuclei. In the preliminary data analysis, an iterative forward-folding technique was applied, in which a physically reasonable trial spectrum was folded with the response function of the detector system and the output was compared to the experimental data. As a result, double-differential cross sections and angular distributions of inelastic neutron scattering from 12-C, 56-Fe, 89-Y and 208-Pb could be obtained. In this paper, a status update on the efforts to improve the description of the detector response function is given.

Abstract

We have measured double-differential cross sections in the interaction of 175 MeV quasimonoenergetic neutrons with O, Si, Fe and Bi. We have compared these results with model calculations with INCL4.5-Abla07, MCNP6 and TALYS-1.2. We have also compared our data with PHITS calculations, where the pre-equilibrium stage of the reaction was accounted respectively using the JENDL/HE-2007 evaluated data library, the quantum molecular dynamics model (QMD) and a modified version of QMD (MQMD) to include a surface coalescence model. Double-differential cross sections for light-ion (p, d, t, 3He and alpha) production in carbon induced by 96 MeV neutrons have been measured at eight laboratory angles from 20 degrees to 160 degrees in steps of 20 degrees. Experimental techniques are presented as well as procedures for data taking and data reduction. Deduced energy-differential, angle-differential and production cross sections are reported. Experimental cross sections are compared with theoretical reaction model calculations and experimental data in the literature. The measured particle data show marked discrepancies from the results of the model calculations in spectral shape and magnitude. The measured production cross sections for protons, deuterons, tritons, 3He, and alpha particles support the trends suggested by data at lower energies., Comment: 40 pages, 18 figures, 3 tables

Catharina Gustavsson,1,2 Lena von Koch1,3,4 1Center for Clinical Research Dalarna, Department of Public Health and Caring Science, Uppsala University, Uppsala, 2School of Education, Health and Social Studies, Dalarna University, Falun, 3Department of Neurobiology, Care Science and Society, Karolinska Institutet, 4Department of Neurology, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden Background and objective: In previous short-term and 2-year follow-ups, a pain and stress self-management group intervention (PASS) had better effect on pain-related disability, self-efficacy, catastrophizing, and perceived pain control than individually administered physiotherapy (IAPT) for patients with persistent tension-type neck pain. Studies that have evaluated long-term effects of self-management approaches toward persistent neck pain are sparse. The objective of this study was to compare pain-related disability, self-efficacy for activities of daily living (ADL), catastrophizing, pain, pain control, use of analgesics, and health care utilization in people with persistent tension-type neck pain 9 years after they received the PASS or IAPT. Materials and methods: Of 156 people (PASS, n = 77; IAPT, n = 79) originally includedin a randomized controlled trial, 129 people (PASS, n = 63; IAPT, n = 66) were eligible and were approached for the 9-year follow-up. They were sent a self-assessment questionnaire, comprising the Neck Disability Index, the Self-Efficacy Scale, the Coping Strategies Questionnaire, and questions regarding pain, analgesics, and health care utilization. Mixed linear models for repeated measures analysis or generalized estimating equations were used to evaluate the differences between groups and within groups over time (baseline, previous follow-ups, and 9-year follow-up) and the interaction effect of “time by group”. Results: Ninety-four participants (73%) responded (PASS, n = 48; IAPT, n = 46). At 9 years, PASS participants reported less pain-related disability, pain at worst, and analgesics usage, and a trend toward better self-efficacy compared to IAPT participants. There was a difference between groups in terms of change over time for disability, self-efficacy for ADL, catastrophizing, perceived pain control, and health care visits in favor of PASS. Analyses of simple main effects at9 years showed that the PASS group had less disability (p = 0.006) and a trend toward better self-efficacy (p = 0.059) than the IAPT group. Conclusion: The favorable effects on pain-related disability of PASS were sustained 9 years after the intervention. Abstract

International audience; VERDI (VElocity foR Direct particle Identification) is a double energy -double velocity (2E-2v) spectrometer under development at JRC-Geel. Both thephysical setup and the analysis have been improved upon since it first becameoperational in 2015. Currently, the spectrometer is being steadily improved using aCf-252(sf) source.Measuring the velocities allows computation of the pre-neutron masses and togetherwith the kinetic energy measurements, also the post-neutron masses can beobtained. Knowing both pre- and post-neutron masses allow calculating the averageneutron multiplicity as a function of fragment mass. Contrary to the 2E method, the2E-2v method does not need prior information regarding prompt neutron emission.Therefore, VERDI presents an independent means to assess neutron multiplicitydata correlated with other fission observables, helping to understand how theexcitation energy is shared between nascent fragments as well as benchmarkingnuclear de-excitation models.To date our results indicate a superior pre-neutron mass resolution compared to 2Edata obtained, e.g., using ionisation chambers. By implementing a new energycalibration method, based on the commonly used parametrisation proposed bySchmitt et al., we have improved the overall agreement with previous Cf-252 data. Inconsequence new and lower values for the set of Schmitt parameters were obtained.As the overall agreement is convincingly good, still VERDI show some discrepancies,e.g., the pre-neutron mass yields are higher for several high yield nuclei. Thepronounced structures are possibly due to the higher pre-neutron mass resolutionreached with VERDI. However, at present stage the post-mass resolution remains acritical feature to improve upon, which will be one focus in our future work.We will present the successful proof-of-principle that does not only show thefeasibility of the VERDI setup but also the benefits to obtain correlated fission-yielddata independent from previous measurements.

Abstract

Accelerator-driven incineration of nuclear waste may play an important role in future scenarios both in countries investing in the nuclear renaissance and in countries deciding to phase out nuclear energy. However, development of accelerator-driven systems requires new and more reliable neutron-induced crosssection data in the intermediate region from 20 to 200 MeV. In this energy region the entire structural properties of the target nucleus may participate in the nuclear reaction, and the nuclear data community expressed the need to obtain benchmark experimental data to improve present models and evaluated nuclear data libraries [1]. A series of neutron induced cross-section measurements at 96 MeV have been conducted at the The Svedberg Laboratory (TSL), Uppsala [2]. However, experimental data are still scarce above 100 MeV. In this perspective, we have measured cross-sections for light-ion production in the interaction of 175 MeV quasi-monoenergetic neutrons with C, O, Si, Fe and Bi. Measurements were conducted at TSL using the Medley spectrometer [3]. We will present inclusive double-differential crosssections for production of protons, deuterons, tritons, 3He and -particles, at eight angles in the laboratory system, from 20 deg to 160 deg. Experimental data are compared with model calculations obtained with INCL4.5-Abla07, TALYS, a modified version of JQMD [4], and MCNP6. All models are able to reproduce the trends in the experimental data, however no approach gives a satisfactory representation of all cross sections data. The most crucial aspect is to describe the formation and emission of composite particles in the pre-equilibrium state. We will discuss reaction mechanisms and we will propose a modified version of the Kalbach systematics that improves TALYS results for proton- and neutron-induced reactions at energies above 100 MeV [5].
