In the following work, we have implemented a version of the hourly method in the ISO 52016-1:2017 standard, informed by the central input table in the SN/TS 3031:2021 specification, including a building energy supply system modelled according to the specification. A case study shows that the model compares well to measurements in unoccupied periods and that openly available gridded weather data can substitute data collected by the weather station on site. A more refined representation of boundary conditions and additional user inputs may be needed for other housing typologies than what can be recreated from the table, but we find that some of this information can be stipulated using open spatial datasets and tools. The results are presented in a web-service dashboard, maintaining continuity with operation phase data collection.

In this paper, we evaluate a method to calculate hourly global solar radiation and improve the calculation of diffuse and vertical surface radiation on building facades by accounting for ground conditions based on publicly available data of cloud coverage, temperature and precipitation from a forecast service covering the Nordic countries. The detailed weather forecasts produced by MET Norway provide hourly forecasts for the next 60 hours, and 6-hour predictions for the next week. To calculate solar radiation on cloudy days the clear and cloudy sky MAC model developed by Davies and Mckay (1982) is used. Instead of basing the prediction on ground observations as in the original method, cloud coverage in three levels and total cloud cover is used as input in a cloud product parameterisation. The resulting global horizontal irradiance is validated against the output of the numerical weather prediction (NWP) model and compared to a year of hourly ground measurements in Trondheim, Norway. To evaluate applicability to the building sciences, vertical irradiance measurements are compared to tilted surface irradiance calculated with the ISO 52010:2017 method. For the location, six-hour forecasting performance is on par with the GHI output of the NWP model (using the cloud layer model and the available weather parameters of the location forecast API). To account for the unpredictability of clouds and improve the short-term forecasting performance beyond 38 % RMSD, 38 % SD and 0.80 R2 a different approach is needed, like combining model and sky observations.

In this chapter, we reassess Jellhaug’s research history by re-evaluating information from earlier studies of its construction, date, and function. We compare these findings with results from a recent pilot investigation of the mound, which involved targeted soil coring and sample extraction. Our objective is to demonstrate that the traditional interpretation of Jellhaug is based on insufficient data and must therefore be reconsidered. This has broader implications, as large mounds like Jellhaug are often assigned a ‘function’ based on their size and location, as well as contemporary value judgments, before being placed into overly narrow, top-down societal frameworks of power. We argue that the notion of large mounds as indicators of centralization of power and/or status is flawed, as it invariably presumes that large mounds signify high-status burials. While this aligns with the established narrative, it does not correspond with the archaeological record, necessitating a consideration of alternative interpretations.

In Norway, Sweden and Finland moose Alces alces hunting teams are often employed to survey occupied beaver (Castor fiber and C. canadensis) lodges while hunting. Results may be used to estimate population density or trend, or for issuing harvest permits. Despite the method’s increasing popularity, the errors involved have never been identified. In this study we 1) compare hunting-team counts of occupied lodges with total counts, 2) identify the sources of error between counts and 3) evaluate the method’s management potential. The study was conducted in Bø Township (266 km2), Telemark County, Norway during 1995. Hunters reported the number of occupied lodges seen daily while hunting moose (25 September - 31 October). Teams (n = 12) under-counted occupied lodges in the township by 62% because 1) the probability of observing an occupied lodge within areas actually hunted on was 0.77, 2) 37% of the moosehunting units were not hunted on and 3) 21% of the occupied lodges occurred in cultivated landscapes outside of moose-hunting units. Hunters had difficulty distinguishing between occupied and unoccupied lodges. Measures of precision and bias should be determined before using the method for practical management. Moose-hunting team surveys may be better suited for obtaining indexes of population change than estimates of occupied lodge number.

This paper presents a reassessment of mound visibility through the analysis of Halvdanshaugen, a substantial Iron Age mound in Norway. In line with conventional views, the mound's visibility covers a considerable swath of the surrounding terrain, although views are limited by topographic features from certain directions and specific parts of the landscape. A refined viewshed analysis, incorporating vegetation as a visual barrier, however, suggests that the mound's visual impact extends no more than a few hundred meters from its base. This sees the mound placed in an enclosed setting which alters the mound’s visual characteristics, emphasizing details of both the mound and activities nearby. In contrast to traditional interpretations that emphasize landscape-wide symbolism, this study advocates for a more reflective perspective, and calls for a multi-sensory understanding of the fluid relationship between mound and landscape. It rejects the idea of universal placement rules and proposes more contextual interpretations that acknowledge the diversity observed in mound construction and use.

Apples are a healthy and environmentally friendly snack, but the consumption of apples in many countries, including Norway, has decreased in the last fifteen years. This trend has a potential negative impact on public health and the environment. In this paper, we use a consumer survey and a random effect ordered logistic regression model to find out what is most important for people when they buy apples. Ten different values are considered and ranked according to individual’s importance. We find that taste and safety are the most important values for the average individual’s choice of apples, while the appearance and type of apple rank third. The least important values are wrapping size and regional origin. Everyday apple eaters are more concerned about pesticide use and less concerned about price than the average consumers. Furthermore, compared to the average consumer, those with low levels of trust in apple producers and authorities care more about pesticides and environmentally friendly production methods, while consumers with a high level of trust care less about these aspects. Our results indicate that to increase the consumption of Norwegian apples, it is important to maintain or improve their reputation as being tasty and safe to eat.

Abstract Information on the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of orally administered cannabis‐based medicine (CBM) in capsule formulation in patient populations is sparse. In this exploratory study, we aimed to evaluate the PK and PD in a probable steady state of CBM in neuropathic pain and spasticity in a population of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Of 134 patients participating in a randomized, double‐blinded, placebo‐controlled, trial, 23 patients with MS (17 female) mean age 52 years (range 21–67) were enrolled in this substudy. They received oral capsules containing Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, n = 4), cannabidiol (CBD, n = 6), a combination (THC&CBD, n = 4), or placebo (n = 9). Maximum doses were 22.5 mg (THC) and 45 mg (CBD) a day divided into three administrations. PD parameters were evaluated for pain and spasticity. Blood samples were analyzed using an ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometer after protein precipitation and phospholipid removal. PK parameters were estimated using computerized modeling. The variation in daily dose and PK between individuals was considerable in a steady state, yet comparable with previous reports from healthy controls. Based on a simulation of the best model, the estimated PK parameters (mean) for THC (5 mg) were Cmax 1.21 ng/mL, Tmax 2.68 h, and half‐life 2.75 h, and for CBD (10 mg) were Cmax 2.67 ng/mL, Tmax 0.10 h, and half‐life 4.95 h, respectively. No effect was found on the PD parameters, but the placebo response was considerable. More immediate adverse events were registered in the active treatment groups compared with the placebo group.

Despite significant advancements in fenestration technology in the last two decades, the thermal transmittance of fenestration products is still significantly higher than that of walls. This corresponds to 60% of the total energy loss of a modern building envelope through the windows. Hence, further development and improvements of fenestration products are necessary. Increasingly stringent codes and standards for fenestration stimulate industry to work on improved solutions. Thus, it is crucial that assessment techniques are able to account for innovations accurately. The thermal effects of non-continuous hardware in window frames are currently ignored by international rating procedures. A preliminary investigation conducted by our team showed significant performance degradation in two of the three out-opening casement profiles caused by the presence of operating hardware. Frames with the structure made of vinyl and fiberglass consist of many air cavities that are penetrated by operating hardware made of highly conductive materials. In these frames, in order to have an accurate assessment, it may be required to employ three-dimensional modeling due to the convective nature of heat transfer within the cavities. However, in this study, we demonstrate that the three-dimensional (3D) effects of non-continuous hardware can be approximated accurately with simpler two-dimensional (2D) simulations. We then develop a simplified model based on weighted average capable of replacing the time- and computation-intensive 3D simulations with 2D simulations and validate it against market available frames and their corresponding hardware. Validation results show that our approximation technique results in discrepancies lower than 0.05 W/(m2K), or 3% of the total thermal transmittance. Thus, we conclude that simplified 2D simulation models may be used for predicting hardware impact in window frames with reasonable accuracy. As windows and glazing structures are becoming ever better thermally insulated, it is becoming even more important to be able to model the impact of the operating hardware on the total thermal performance in order to design the best windows possible and not let the operating hardware ruin an otherwise well-proven design, which is hence addressed in this study.

Transit through the carbon liquid phase has significant consequences for the subsequent formation of solid nanocarbon detonation products. We report dynamic measurements of liquid carbon condensation and solidification into nano-onions over ∽200 ns by analysis of time-resolved, small-angle X-ray scattering data acquired during detonation of a hydrogen-free explosive, DNTF (3,4-bis(3-nitrofurazan-4-yl)furoxan). Further, thermochemical modeling predicts a direct liquid to solid graphite phase transition for DNTF products ~200 ns post-detonation. Solid detonation products were collected and characterized by high-resolution electron microscopy to confirm the abundance of carbon nano-onions with an average diameter of ∽10 nm, matching the dynamic measurements. We analyze other carbon-rich explosives by similar methods to systematically explore different regions of the carbon phase diagram traversed during detonation. Our results suggest a potential pathway to the efficient production of carbon nano-onions, while offering insight into the phase transformation kinetics of liquid carbon under extreme pressures and temperatures.

We synthesized a new nanocomposite bearing nitrogen-doped graphene as a carbon additive to the nickel oxide nanoparticles-titanium dioxide nanotubes heterojunction. The main purpose was the comparison of its structural and electronic properties, hence potential applications, with its undoped, reduced graphene oxide (GO) homolog. The beneficial effect of graphene on TiO2 heterojunctions is an accepted fact in the materials science field, mainly in favor of the nitrogen-doped one. Our data show that both graphenes have little influence on the band offset values of the NiO–TiO2 heterojunction. Still, the presence of reduced, undoped GO allows an improved electron transfer process from titania, causing a better charge carriers' separation. This correlates well with their observed photocatalytic activity under visible light exposure, for the degradation of four emerging contaminant pollutants (amoxicillin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and β -estradiol). In addition, the band alignment of the NiO–TiO2 heterojunction with graphenes, and the corrected thermodynamic potentials of the organic pollutants explain well the observed photocatalytic behavior. We examined the number of patients tested for serum ethanol concentration (SEC) at admission to a large Emergency Department (ED) and the relationship of SEC with sex and age. SEC was analysed by enzymatic method. We retrieved SEC in patient samples from the ED during 2015–2020 from the laboratory information system. Altogether, 174 378 patients were admitted, and 7.3% were tested for SEC. Of these, 35.3% had a positive test. The percentage of patients tested increased from 4.8% in 2015 to 14.4% in 2020. A total of 416 patients had more than one positive SEC. For individual data, we included the first positive test per patient, n = 3607. Of these, 73% were men and 27% were women. The median SEC for both men and women was 1.9 g/L. About 4.4% had a SEC ≥ 3.5 g/L. The median SEC in patients aged 30–59 years was 0.2 g/L higher than the 12–29 and ≥ 60 age groups. In conclusion, the increase in the percentage of patients tested did not lead to a corresponding increase in ethanol‐positive tests. There was a large predominance of men, the median SEC was the same for men and women and highest in the 30–59 age group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Norwegian teachers and school leaders had to organise and provide homeschooling for their students from March to May 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey conducted in May 2020 examined lower secondary school students' experiences of distance learning. How students at different levels of academic achievement (based on grades) experienced homeschooling was compared to comparable findings from a survey conducted on students from the same schools during the autumn of 2018. The findings indicate that students experienced less support and feedback from their teachers during homeschooling, and that teachers gave more written than oral feedback to the students during homeschooling than they do in regular school. Furthermore, there was a tendency of lower efforts and self-efficacy among low-achieving students, which might be difficult to reverse when schools reopen. The findings raise growing concerns about homeschooling leading to a larger gap between high- and low-achieving students in lower secondary school.
