Abstract

The South Pole Acoustic Test Setup (SPATS) was built to evaluate the acoustic characteristics of the South Pole ice in the 10 kHz to 100 kHz frequency range, for the purpose of assessing the feasibility of an acoustic neutrino detection array at the South Pole. The SPATS hardware consists of four vertical strings deployed in the upper 500 m of the South Pole ice cap. The strings form a trapezoidal array with a maximum baseline of 543 m. Each string has 7 stages equipped with one transmitter and one sensor module. Sound is detected or generated by piezoelectric ceramic elements inside the modules. Analogue signals are sent to the surface on electric cables where they are digitized by a PC-based data acquisition system. The data from all strings are collected on a central computer in the IceCube Laboratory from where they are send to a central data storage facility via a satellite link or stored locally on tape. A technical overview of SPATS and its performance is presented.

Abstract

Silicon tracking detectors operated at high luminosity collider experiments pose a challenge for current and future readout systems regarding bandwidth, radiation, space and power constraints. With the latest developments in wireless communications, wireless readout systems might be an attractive alternative to commonly used wired optical and copper based readout architectures. The WADAPT group (Wireless Allowing Data and Power Transmission) has been formed to study the feasibility of wireless data transmission for future tracking detectors. These proceedings cover current developments focused on communication in the 60 GHz band. This frequency band offers a high bandwidth, a small form factor and an already mature technology. Motivation for wireless data transmission for high energy physics application and the developments towards a demonstrator prototype are summarized. Feasibility studies concerning the construction and operation of a wireless transceiver system have been performed. Data transmission tests with a transceiver prototype operating at even higher frequencies in the 240 GHz band are described. Data transmission at rates up to 10 Gb/s have been obtained successfully using binary phase shift keying.

Abstract

Linear systems theory is used for the numerical assessment of the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of the hybrid semiconductor pixel detector DIXI. The Monte Carlo based code GEANT is used to simulate the photon transport in the sensor, charge transport modeling is treated analytically and the readout chip is simulated using PSPICE. The DQE for two differently shaped X-ray spectra of the same quality and for different operational conditions of the readout chip regarding the discrimination level are computed in order to validate the model. The model described in this paper can be adopted for optimizing the detector. Index Terms--Cascaded linear system, detective quantum efficiency (DQE), hybrid pixel detector, X-ray imaging.

9. A fast programmable trigger system for the WASA experiment

Abstract

A programmable fast trigger system for the WASA experiment at The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala, Sweden is presented. For minimum signal delay times the hardware architecture is divided into two levels. The first level mainly handles fast signals from about 350 plastic scintillating detectors forming hit cluster multiplicity decision, restricting the total number of reaction products. Track alignment checks, coplanarity and deposited energy checks put further restrictions on the acquired events. The first level incorporates 40 generic trigger modules, prescalers, scalers, and pattern units. To minimize dead-time losses the first level is working in a feed-through mode with no external strobe signals required, the total delay amounts to 120 ns. The second level utilizes a fast cluster finding algorithm implemented in 40 trigger modules operating on signals from an array of 24 x 48 CsI crystals. Background is filtered away by restricting the spatial distribution and the number of reaction products. The output from the cluster analyzing second level is provided within 115 ns. The trigger utilizes programmable logic devices and is fully reconfigurable. An [I.sup.2] C-based slow control system is provided for setting discriminator thresholds, pulse duration, channel masking, signal delay, and setup of logic conditions. Abstract

This article presents the experimental results of 17 MeV proton irradiation on a 60 GHz low power, half-duplex transceiver (TRX) chip implemented in 65 nm CMOS technology. It supports short range point-to-point data rate up to 6 Gbps by employing on-off keying (OOK). To investigate the irradiation hardness for high-energy physics (HEP) applications, two TRX chips were irradiated with total ionising doses (TID) of 74 and 42 kGy and fluence of 1.4 x 10(14)N(eq)/cm(2) and 0.8 x 10(14)N(eq)/cm(2) for RX and TX modes, respectively. The chips were characterised by pre- and post-irradiation analogue voltage measurements on different circuit blocks as well as through the analysis of wireless transmission parameters like bit error rate (BER), eye diagram, jitter etc. Post-irradiation measurements have shown certain reduction in performance but both TRX chips have been found operational through over the air measurements at 5 Gbps. Moreover, very small shift in the carrier frequency was observed after the irradiation.

13. Survival trend after invasive cervical cancer diagnosis in Sweden before and after cytologic screening: 1960-1984

Abstract

Background. Cytologic screening can reduce mortality from cervical cancer by detection and removal of premalignant lesions. Conceivably, mortality is further reduced because more women with invasive disease are diagnosed at an earlier, curable stage. This hypothesis can be assessed in Sweden, where population-based screening programs were introduced successively over about a decade starting in 1964. Methods. Record linkages permitted complete follow-up through 1986 of all 17,377 patients with invasive cervical cancer diagnosed in Sweden from 1960 through 1984. We analyzed relative survival rates that describe the survival of patients after elimination of the effects of causes of death other than cancer of the cervix. Results. Prognosis improved substantially in patients younger than age 50 years at diagnosis; from 1960-1964 to 1980-1984, the 5-year relative survival rate increased from 69.8% to 88.8% at age 20-29 years, from 71.7% to 85.5% at age 30-39 years, and from 68.6% to 77.9% at age 40-49 years. The excess mortality was thus reduced by more than half in patients diagnosed when younger than 40 years. In contrast, only slight or no improvement was noted in those diagnosed at older ages when screening was less extensive. In all time periods, a strong association was found between older age at diagnosis and poorer prognosis. Conclusion. Although alternative explanations for our findings must be seriously considered, the most obvious interpretation is that cytologic screening reduces mortality from cervical cancer by earlier diagnosis of invasive disease.

Abstract

Background. Cytologic screening and follow-up can reduce the incidence of cervical cancer by detection and removal of precursor lesions. It is unknown, however, whether differences in histopathologic criteria for these precursor lesions affect the benefit of screening. These criteria may be difficult to study, but they are likely to be reflected in reported incidence of in situ cancer in small areas of Sweden. Purpose: Our purpose was to test the hypothesis that the benefit of screening can be predicted by histopathologic criteria as reflected in the reported incidence of cancer in situ. Methods: Incidence data were from the Swedish National Cancer Registry. Regression models showing the relationship between in situ and invasive cancer were formulated and estimated. Each county (total, 24) was a unit of measurement, and adjustment was made for the incidence of invasive cancer before screening. Results: During population-based screening in Sweden, the incidence of cancer in situ varied about fourfold among the 24 counties, which indicates that the criteria used to diagnose cancer in situ differed markedly. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic-kilometer-scale high-energy neutrino detector built into the ice at the South Pole. Construction of IceCube, the largest neutrino detector built to date, was completed in 2011 and enabled the discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. We describe here the design, production, and calibration of the IceCube digital optical module (DOM), the cable systems, computing hardware, and our methodology for drilling and deployment. We also describe the online triggering and data filtering systems that select candidate neutrino and cosmic ray events for analysis. Due to a rigorous pre-deployment protocol, 98.4% of the DOMs in the deep ice are operating and collecting data. IceCube routinely achieves a detector uptime of 99% by emphasizing software stability and monitoring. Detector operations have been stable since construction was completed, and the detector is expected to operate at least until the end of the next decade.

Abstract

Silicon tracking detectors operated at high luminosity collider experiments pose a challenge for current and future readout systems regarding bandwidth, radiation, space and power constraints. With the latest developments in wireless communications, wireless readout systems might be an attractive alternative to commonly used wired optical and copper based readout architectures. The WADAPT group (Wireless Allowing Data and Power Transmission) has been formed to study the feasibility of wireless data transmission for future tracking detectors. These proceedings cover current developments focused on communication in the 60 GHz band. This frequency band offers a high bandwidth, a small form factor and an already mature technology. Motivation for wireless data transmission for high energy physics application and the developments towards a demonstrator prototype are summarized. Feasibility studies concerning the construction and operation of a wireless transceiver system have been performed. Data transmission tests with a transceiver prototype operating at even higher frequencies in the 240 GHz band are described. Data transmission at rates up to 10 Gb/s have been obtained successfully using binary phase shift keying.

Abstract

The ARIANNA experiment seeks to observe the diffuse flux of neutrinos in the 10(8)-10(10) GeV energy range using a grid of radio detectors at the surface of the Ross Ice Shelf of Antarctica. The detector measures the coherent Cherenkov radiation produced at radio frequencies, from about 100 MHz-1 GHz, by charged particle showers generated by neutrino interactions in the ice. The ARIANNA Hexagonal Radio Array (HRA) is being constructed as a prototype for the full array. During the 2013-14 austral summer, three HRA stations collected radio data which was wirelessly transmitted off site in nearly real-time. The performance of these stations is described and a simple analysis to search for neutrino signals is presented. The analysis employs a set of three cuts that reject background triggers while preserving 90% of simulated cosmogenic neutrino triggers. No neutrino candidates are found in the data and a model-independent 90% confidence level Neyman upper limit is placed on the all flavor nu + (nu) over bar flux in a sliding decade-wide energy bin. The limit reaches a minimum of 1.9 x 10(-23) GeV-1 cm(-2) s(-1) sr(-1) in the 10(8.5)-10(9.5) GeV energy bin. Simulations of the performance of the full detector are also described. The sensitivity of the full ARIANNA experiment is presented and compared with current neutrino flux models.

Wireless data transfer has revolutionized the consumer market for the last decade generating many products equipped with transmitters and receivers for wireless data transfer. Wireless technology opens attractive possibilities for data transfer in future tracking detectors. The reduction of wires and connectors for data links is certainly beneficial both for the material budget and the reliability of the system. An advantage of wireless data transfer is the freedom of routing signals which today is particularly complicated when bringing the data the first 50 cm out of the tracker. With wireless links intelligence can be built into a tracker by introducing communication between tracking layers within a region of interest which would allow the construction of track primitives in real time. The wireless technology used in consumer products is however not suitable for tracker readouts. The low data transfer capacity of current 5 GHz transceivers and the relatively large feature sizes of the components is a disadvantage. Due to the requirement of high data rates in tracking detectors high bandwidth is required. The frequency band around 60 GHz turns out to be a very promising candidate for data transfer in a detector system. The high baseband frequency allows for data transfer in the order of several Gbit/s. Due to the small wavelength in the mm range only small structures are needed for the transmitting and receiving electronics. The 60 GHz frequency band is a strong candidate for future WLAN applications hence components are already starting to be available on the market. Patch antennas produced on flexible Printed Circuit Board substrate that can be used for wireless communication in future trackers are presented in this article. The antennas can be connected to transceivers for data transmission/reception or be connected by wave-guides to structures capable of bringing the 60 GHz signal behind boundaries. Abstract

In many studies of dynamic systems, the stochastic aspects are as important as the dynamic. It is then important to consider uncertainty in the results. Furthermore, dynamics and stochastics interact because the stochastics excite the dynamics and the dynamics change the conditions for the stochastics. Poisson Simulation is an extension of Continuous System Simulation to model and simulate dynamic and stochastic processes. The power of this idea has been described and verified. However, introducing randomness into a CSS model makes the results stochastic. Therefore, a number of simulation runs followed by a statistical analysis have to be performed. Two cases of the statistical analysis must be distinguished: I. Estimation of output quantities, which is straight-forward, and II. Estimation of parameters, which requires a more complex procedure based on bootstrap methods. This documentation presents methods to solve these problems with the help of specially designed tools for repeated simulation and subsequent statistical analysis. Part I presents the tool StocRes for estimation of output quantities and Part II the tool ParmEst for parameter estimations.

Abstract

Using the South Pole Acoustic Test Setup (SPATS) and a retrievable transmitter deployed in holes drilled for the IceCube experiment, we have measured the attenuation of acoustic signals by South Pole ice at depths between 190 m and 500 m. Three data sets, using different acoustic sources, have been analyzed and give consistent results. The method with the smallest systematic uncertainties yields an amplitude attenuation coefficient alpha = 3.20 +/- 0.57 km(-1) between 10 and 30 kHz, considerably larger than previous theoretical estimates. Expressed as an attenuation length, the analyses give a consistent result for lambda equivalent to 1/alpha of similar to 300 m with 20% uncertainty. No significant depth or frequency dependence has been found.

Abstract

Exclusive measurements of the pp -> pp pi(0)pi(0) reaction have been performed at CELSIUS/WASA at energies from threshold up to T-p = 1.3 GeV. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained. Here we concentrate on energies T-p >= GeV. where the Delta Delta excitation becomes the leading process. No evidence is found for a significant ABC effect beyond that given by the conventional t-channel Delta Delta excitation. This holds also for the double-pionic fusion to the quasibound He-2. The data are compared to model predictions, which are based on both pi- and rho-exchange. Total and differential cross sections are at variance with these predictions and call for a profound modification of the rho-exchange. A phenomenological modification allowing only a small rho-exchange contribution leads to a quantitative description of the data.

Abstract

The pi(0)pi(0) production in pp-collisions has been investigated in exclusive and kinematically complete measurements from threshold up to T-p = 1.4 GeV. For incident energies T-p > 1 GeV, i.e. in the region beyond the Roper excitation, the Delta Delta excitation process takes over. The data are well explained by the t-channel Delta Delta process dominated by pion exchange. There is no low-mass enhancement (ABC effect) in the pi(0)pi(0)-invariant mass distribution beyond that given by the conventional t-channel Delta Delta process. This is also true for the limiting case, where the protons are in the quasi-bound He-2 state.

Abstract

First exclusive data for the pp -> nnp(+)pi(+) reaction have been obtained at CELSIUS with the WASA detector setup at a beam energy of T(p) - 1.1 GeV. Total and differential cross-sections disagree with theoretical calculations, which predict the Delta Delta excitation to be the dominant process at this beam energy. Instead, the data require the excitation of one of the nucleons to a higher-lying Delta state, preferably the Delta(1600)P(33), to be the leading process.

Abstract

The cross section for the pd→3Heηπ0 reaction has been measured at a beam energy of 1450 MeV using the WASA detector at the CELSIUS storage ring and detecting one 3He and four photons from the decays of the two mesons. The data indicate that the production mechanism involves the formation of the Δ(1232) isobar. Although the beam energy does not allow the full peak of this resonance to be seen, the invariant masses of all three pairs of final particles are well reproduce dby a phase space Monte Carlo simulation weighted with the p-wave factor of the square of the π0 momentum in the 3He π0 system.

Abstract

The cross-sections of the pd -> He-3 eta, pd -> He-3 pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) and pd -> He-3 pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) reactions have been measured at the beam kinetic energies T-p = 1360 MeV and T-p = 1450 MeV using the CELSIUS/WASA detector setup. At both energies, the differential cross-section d sigma/d Omega of the eta meson in the pd -> He-3 eta reaction shows a strong forward-backward asymmetry in the CMS. The ratio between the pd -> He-3 pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and pd -> He-3 pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) cross-sections has been analysed in terms of isospin amplitudes. The reconstructed invariant-mass distributions of the pi pi, He-3 pi and (3)He2 pi systems provide hints on the role of nucleon resonances in the 3 pi production process.

Abstract

The two-pion production in pp-collisions has been investigated at CELSIUS in exclusive measurements from threshold up to T-P = 1.36 GeV. Total and differential Cross sections have been obtained for the channels pn pi(+)pi(0), pp pi(+)pi(-), pp pi(0)pi(0) and also nn pi(+)pi(+). For intermediate incident energies T-P > 1GeV, i.e. in the region which is beyond the Roper excitation but at the onset of Delta Delta excitation, the total pp pi(0)pi(0) cross section falls behind theoretical predictions by as much as all order of magnitude near 1.2 GeV, whereas the nn pi(+)pi(+) cross section is a factor of five larger than predicted. An isospin decomposition of the total cross sections exhibits a s-channel-like energy dependence in the region of the Roper excitation as well as a significant contribution of an isospin 3/2 resonance other than the Delta(1232). Abstract

The ABC effect-a puzzling low-mass enhancement in the pi pi invariant mass spectrum, first observed by Abashian, Booth, and Crowe-is well known from inclusive measurements of two-pion production in nuclear fusion reactions. Here we report on the first exclusive and kinematically complete measurements of the most basic double-pionic fusion reaction pn -> d pi(0)pi(0) at beam energies of 1.03 and 1.35 GeV. The measurements, which have been carried out at CELSIUS-WASA, reveal the ABC effect to be a (pi pi)(I=L=0) channel phenomenon associated with both a resonancelike energy dependence in the integral cross section and the formation of a Delta Delta system in the intermediate state. A corresponding simple s-channel resonance ansatz provides a surprisingly good description of the data.

Abstract

The production of eta mesons at an excess energy of 72 MeV has been studied in the reaction pp -> pp(eta)gamma gamma. It is shown that a simple model with Pp. final states included reproduces observed differential distributions better than the same model restricted to Ss, Sd and Ds final states. The strong influence of the Pp states could be taken as an indication of rho dominance within an one boson exchange model for the excitation of N*(1535).

Abstract

The ABC effect, a low-mass enhancement in the invariant pp mass, is observed in double-pionic fusion reactions leading to a bound nuclear system in the final state. From previous measurements there have been indications that this phenomenon is resctricted to the sigma channel of the pp system. With exclusive measurements of the pp -> d pi(+)pi(0) reaction at T-p = 1.1 GeV we demonstrate that, indeed, the ABC effect does not occur in the vector-isovector Delta Delta channel (rho channel) despite the fact that the Delta Delta excitation is oberved to be the dominant reaction process. We also show that this reaction is well described by a t-channel Delta Delta excitation with the subsequent decay into the vector-isovector Delta Delta channel given by the rho channel operator.

Abstract

The tensor polarisation of omega mesons produced in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction has been studied at two energies near threshold. The 3 He nuclei were detected in coincidence with the pi(0)pi(+)pi(-) or pi(0)gamma decay products of the omega. in contrast to the case of phi-meson production, the omega mesons are found to be unpolarised. This brings into question the applicability of the Okubo-Zweig-lizuka rule when comparing the production of vector mesons in low energy hadronic reactions.

The WASA 4 pi multidetector system, aimed at investigating light meson production in light ion collisions and eta meson rare decays at the CELSIUS storage ring in Uppsala is presented. A unique feature of the system is the use of hydrogen pellets as internal targets for the first time. Abstract

A search for rare lepton decays of the eta meson was performed using the WASA detector at CELSIUS. Two candidates for double Dalitz decay eta -> e(+)e(-)e(+)e(-) events are reported with a background of 1.3 +/- 0.2 events. This allows to set an upper limit to the branching ratio of 9.7x10(-5) (90% CL). The branching ratio for the decay eta -> e(+)e(-)gamma is determined to (7.8 +/- 0.5(stat)+/- 0.8(syst))x10(-3) in agreement with world average value. An upper limit (90% CL) for the branching ratio for the eta -> e(+)e(-) decay is 2.7x10(-5) and a limit for the sum of the eta ->mu(+)mu(-)mu(+)mu(-) and eta ->pi(+)pi(-)mu(+)mu(-) decays is 3.6x10(-4).

Abstract

In most investigations the Roper resonance is sensed only very indirectly via complex partial-wave analyses. We find indications for its excitation in the invariant n pi(+) mass spectrum of the pp -> np pi(+) reaction at M approximate to 1360 MeV with a width of approximate to 150 MeV . The values fit very favorably to the most recent phase shift results as well as to the observations at BES. In the near-threshold two-pion production pp -> pp pi(0)pi(0) , where the Roper excitation and its subsequent decays via the routes N* -> Delta pi -> N pi pi and N* -> N sigma are the only dominant processes, we find its direct decay into the N sigma channel to be the by far dominating decay process -in favor of a monopole excitation of the Roper resonance.

Abstract

The reaction pd -> He-3 eta at threshold was used to provide a clean source of eta mesons for decay studies with the WASA detector at CELSIUS. The branching ratio of the decay eta -> pi(+)pi(-)e(+)e(-) is measured to be (4.3 +/- 1.3 +/- 0.4) x 10(-4).

Abstract

At CELSIUS-WASA the two-pion production in proton-proton collisisons has been measured exclusively from threshold up to the energy regime, where both of the collision partners are expected to be excited to the Δ state. The measurements constitute the first kinematically complete data samples of solid statistics in this energy range. Most of the data have been obtained for the π+π- and π0π0channels. Whereas at near-threshold energies the differential distributions can be succesfully explained by chiral dynamics and Roper excitation, respectively, the data for the π+π- channel in the ΔΔ region can be described only, if the special configuration (ΔΔ)0+ is assumed. The data for the π0π0 channel moreover exhibit a low-mass enhancement in the π0π0 invariant mass spectrum, which is reminiscent of the ABC-effect found in double-pionic fusion to light nuclei.

Abstract

The cross section for direct neutral and charged three pion production in pp interactions was measured at excess energies in the range 160–216 MeV. That comprises the first measurement of the pp→ppπ0π0π0 reaction and the direct comparison with the pp→ppπ+π−π0 process. The experiment was performed above the η meson production threshold and the cross section could be directly normalized to the cross section of the pp→ppη reaction, with the η decaying into 3 pions. Since the same final states are selected, the measurement has a low systematical error. The measured cross section ratio σ(pp→ppπ+π−π0)/σ(pp→ppπ0π0π0) is compared to predictions of dominance of different isobars in the intermediate state.

Abstract

The CELSIUS-WASA setup is used to measure the 3π0 decay of η mesons produced in pp interactions with beam kinetic energies of 1.36 and 1.45 GeV. The efficiency-corrected Dalitz plot and density distributions for this decay are shown, together with a fit of the quadratic slope parameter α yielding α = −0.026 ± 0.010(stat) ± 0.010(syst). This value is compared to recent experimental results and theoretical predictions.

Abstract

The ABC effect - a puzzling threshold enhancement in the ππ invariant mass spectrum of double-pionic fusion to nuclear bound states - has been investigated since 40 years by inclusive measurements without providing a conclusive interpretation. First exclusive measurements to this topic have now been carried out at CELSIUS-WASA. They confirm a huge ππ threshold enhancement, prove it to be of scalar-isoscalar nature, i.e., a σ-channel phenomenon and reveal the theoretically predicted high-mass enhancement in inclusive spectra to be of πππ rather than of ππ nature - falsifying thus corresponding model predictions for the ABC effect. From the kinematically complete data samples we infer that the interaction between the two Δ particles created in this process is of crucial importance.
