Anthropogenic aerosols mask the climate warming caused by greenhouse gases (GHGs). In the absence of observational constraints, large uncertainties plague the estimates of this masking effect. Here we used the abrupt reduction in anthropogenic emissions observed during the COVID-19 societal slow-down to characterize the aerosol masking effect over South Asia. During this period, the aerosol loading decreased substantially and our observations reveal that the magnitude of this aerosol demasking corresponds to nearly three-fourths of the CO2-induced radiative forcing over South Asia. Concurrent measurements over the northern Indian Ocean unveiled a ~7% increase in the earth's surface-reaching solar radiation (surface brightening). Aerosol-induced atmospheric solar heating decreased by ~0.4 K d-1. Our results reveal that under clear sky conditions, anthropogenic emissions over South Asia lead to nearly 1.4 W m-2 heating at the top of the atmosphere during the period March-May. A complete phase-out of today's fossil fuel combustion to zero-emission renewables would result in rapid aerosol demasking, while the GHGs linger on.

Continental margins receive, process and sequester most of the terrestrial organic carbon (terrOC) released into the ocean. In the Arctic, increasing fluvial discharge and collapsing permafrost are expected to enhance terrOC release and degradation, leading to ocean acidification and translocated CO2 release to the atmosphere. However, the processes controlling terrOC transport beyond the continental shelf, and the amount of terrOC that reaches the slope and the rise are poorly described. Here we study terrOC transport to the Laptev Sea continental slope and rise by probing surface sediments with dual‐isotope (δ13C/Δ14C) source apportionment, degradation‐diagnostic terrestrial biomarkers (n‐alkanes, n‐alkanoic acids, lignin phenols) and 210Pbxs‐based mass accumulation rates (MAR). The MAR‐terrOC (g m−2 yr−1) decrease from 14.7 ± 12.2 on the shelf, to 7.0 ± 5.8 over the slope, to 2.3 ± 0.3 for the rise. Scaling this to the respective regimes yields that 80% of the terrOC accumulates on the shelf, while 11% and 9% of the accumulation occurs in slope and rise sediments, respectively. TerrOC remineralization is evidenced by biomarker degradation proxies (CPI of n‐alkanes and 3,5Bd/V) indicating 40% and 60% more terrOC degradation from slope to rise, consistent with a decline in terrOC concentrations by 57%. TerrOC degradation only partially explains this decline. An updated Laptev Sea terrOC budget suggests that sediment transport dynamics such as turbidity currents may drive terrOC shelf‐basin export, contributing to the observed accumulation pattern. This study quantitatively demonstrates that Arctic shelf seas are key receptor systems for remobilized terrOC, emphasizing their importance in the carbon cycle of the rapidly changing Arctic. The dual carbon isotope signatures and optical properties of carbonaceous aerosols have been investigated simultaneously for the first time in the South Asian outflow during an intensive campaign at the Maldives Climate Observatory on Hanimaadhoo (MCOH) (February and March 2012). As one component of the Cloud Aerosol Radiative Forcing Dynamics Experiment, this paper reports on the sources and the atmospheric processing of elemental carbon (EC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) as examined by a dual carbon isotope approach. The radiocarbon (Δ14C) data show that WSOC has a significantly higher biomass/biogenic contribution (86 ± 5%) compared to EC (59 ± 4%). The more13C-enriched signature of MCOH-WSOC (20.8 ± 0.7‰) compared to MCOH-EC (25.8 ± 0.3‰) and megacity Delhi WSOC (24.1 ± 0.9‰) suggests that WSOC is significantly more affected by aging during long-range transport than EC. The δ13 C-Δ14 C signal suggests that the wintertime WSOC intercepted over the Indian Ocean largely represents aged primary biomass burning aerosols. Since light-absorbing organic carbon aerosols (Brown Carbon (BrC)) have recently been identified as potential contributors to positive radiative forcing, optical properties of WSOC were also investigated. The mass absorption cross section of WSOC (MAC365) was 0.5 ± 0.2 m2 g1 which is lower than what has been observed at near-source sites, indicating a net decrease of WSOC light-absorption character during long-range transport. Near-surface WSOC at MCOH accounted for ~1% of the total direct solar absorbance relative to EC, which is lower than the BrC absorption inferred from solar spectral observations of ambient aerosols, suggesting that a significant portion of BrC might be included in the water-insoluble portion of organic aerosols.

Atmospheric aerosols strongly influence the global climate by their light absorption (e.g., black carbon, BC, brown carbon, BrC) and scattering (e.g., sulfate) properties. This study presents simultaneous measurements of ambient aerosol light absorption properties and chemical composition from three large-footprint South Asian receptor sites during the South Asian Pollution Experiment (SAPOEX) in December-March 2018. The BC mass absorption cross-section (BC-MAC678) values increased from 3.5 ± 1.3 at the Bhola Climate Observatory-Bangladesh (i.e., located at exit outflow of Indo-Gangetic Plain) to 6.4 ± 1.3 at the two regional receptor observatories at Maldives Climate Observatory-Hanimaadhoo (MCOH) and Maldives Climate Observatory-Gan (MCOG). This likely reflects a coatingenhancement effect due to ageing of the aerosols during long-range transport. At the same time, the BrC-MAC365 decreased by a factor of three from the IGP exit to the equatorial Indian Ocean, likely due to photochemical bleaching of organic chromophores. The high chlorine-to-sodium ratio at the near-source-region BCOB suggests a significant contribution of chorine from anthropogenic activities. This particulate Cl- has the potential to convert into Cl-radicals that can affect the oxidation capacity of the polluted air. Moreover, Cl- is shown to be near-fully consumed during the long-range transport. The results of this synoptic study over the large South Asian scale have significance for understanding the ageing effect of the optical and chemical properties of aerosols as the pollution from the Indo-Gangetic Plain disperses over regional scales. Carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations in the troposphere are decreasing globally, with Africa as an exception. Yet, the region is understudied, with a deficit of ground-based observations and highly uncertain CO emission inventories. This paper reports multiyear observational CO data from the Mt. Kenya Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) station, as well as summertime CO isotope observations from both Mt. Kenya and Nairobi, Kenya. The CO variability at Mt. Kenya is characterized by slightly increased concentrations during dry periods and a strong influence of short-term pollution events. While some data gaps and differences in instrumentation complicate decadal-scale trend analysis, a small long-term increase is resolved. High-pollution events are consistent with isotopic signal from downwind savanna fires. The isotope fingerprint of CO in Nairobi indicates an overwhelming dominance (near 100 %) of primary emissions from fossil fuel combustion with implications for air pollution policy. In contrast, the isotope signature of CO intercepted at the large-footprint Mt. Kenya region suggests that at least 70 % is primary sourced, with a predominance likely from savanna fires in Africa. Taken together, this study provides quantitative constraints of primary vs. secondary CO in the eastern Africa region and in urban Nairobi, with implications for satellite-based emission inventories as well as for chemical transport and climate modeling.
