This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the third International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to A-A, which took place in August 2019 in Lund, Sweden. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field and try to come up with concrete suggestions for how to make progress on both the experimental and theoretical sides. We review the recent progress in the theoretical description and experimental observation of multiple parton interactions. Subjects covered include experimental measurements of minimum bias interactions and of the underlying event, models of soft physics implemented in Monte Carlo generators, developments in the theoretical description of multiple parton interactions and phenomenological studies of double parton scattering. The workshop on "Hadron-Hadron and Cosmic-Ray Interactions at multi-TeV Energies" held at the ECT* centre (Trento) in Nov.-Dec. 2010 gathered together both theorists and experimentalists to discuss issues of the physics of high-energy hadronic interactions of common interest for the particle, nuclear and cosmic-ray communities. QCD results from collider experiments -- mostly from the LHC but also from the Tevatron, RHIC and HERA -- were discussed and compared to various hadronic Monte Carlo generators, aiming at an improvement of our theoretical understanding of soft, semi-hard and hard parton dynamics. The latest cosmic-ray results from various ground-based observatories were also presented with an emphasis on the phenomenological modeling of the first hadronic interactions of the extended air-showers generated in the Earth atmosphere. The HERA electron--proton collider has collected 100 pb$^{-1}$ of data since its start-up in 1992, and recently moved into a high-luminosity operation mode, with upgraded detectors, aiming to increase the total integrated luminosity per experiment to more than 500 pb$^{-1}$. HERA has been a machine of excellence for the study of QCD and the structure of the proton. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will collide protons with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, will be completed at CERN in 2007. The main mission of the LHC is to discover and study the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking, possibly via the discovery of the Higgs particle, and search for new physics in the TeV energy scale, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Besides these goals, the LHC will also make a substantial number of precision measurements and will offer a new regime to study the strong force via perturbative QCD processes and diffraction. For the full LHC physics programme a good understanding of QCD phenomena and the structure function of the proton is essential. Therefore, in March 2004, a one-year-long workshop started to study the implications of HERA on LHC physics. This included proposing new measurements to be made at HERA, extracting the maximum information from the available data, and developing/improving the theoretical and experimental tools. A second workshop on small x physics, within the Small x Collaboration, was held in Lund in June 2002 with the aim of over-viewing recent theoretical progress in this area and summarizing the experimental status. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Jan Kwiecinski, who died unexpectedly on August 29, 2003., Comment: 32 pages, 33 figures

The aim of this paper is to summarize the general status of our understanding of small x physics. It is based on presentations and discussions at an informal meeting on this topic held in Lund, Sweden, in March 2001. This document also marks the founding of an informal collaboration between experimentalists and theoreticians with a special interest in small x physics. A thorough verification of the distinct differences in the properties of quark and gluon jets is considered as one of the most instructive tests of the basic ideas of QCD. In the real life experiments such a comparison appears to be quite a delicate task and various subtle issues require further theoretical efforts. In this paper we discuss in detail the possibility to extract the theoretically adequate information from the particle multiplicity patterns in three-jet events in e+e- annihilation., Comment: 10+1 pages, 3 figures. While the hard phase of the strong interaction is well described by perturbative QCD, the soft hadronization phase is less understood. Benefiting from the high statistics from e+e- experiments at the Z0 resonance, it is possible to impose strong two-jet cuts on the data without loosing the statistical significance. In these events perturbative activity is suppressed and hadronization effects can be more prominent. We show that after proper event cuts a set of observables are sensitive to differences in the hadronization models. These observables can thus be important tools for a more detailed study of the hadronization mechanism., Comment: 18 pages, 6 ps figures

We derive a partition function for the Lund fragmentation model and compare it with that of a classical gas. For a fixed rapidity ``volume'' this partition function corresponds to a multiplicity distribution which is very close to a binomial distribution. We compare our results with the multiplicity distributions obtained from the JETSET Monte Carlo for several scenarios. Firstly, for the fragmentation vertices of the Lund string. We discuss what happens at the end of the QCD cascades. We show that, with just a few reasonable assumptions, the emission of soft gluons is constrained to produce an ordered field in the form of a helix. We describe how to modify the Lund fragmentation scheme in order to fragment such a field. Our modified fragmentation scheme yields results which are consistent with current experimental measurements, but predicts at least one signature which should be observable., Comment: 21+1 pages

We present approximations of varying degree of sophistication to the integral equations for the (gluon) structure functions of a hadron (``the partonic flux factor'') in a model valid in the Leading Log Approximation with a running coupling constant. The results are all of the BFKL-type, i.e. a power in the Bjorken variable x_B^{-\lambda} with the parameter \lambda determined from the size \alpha_0 of the ``effective'' running coupling \bar{\alpha}\equiv 3\alpha_s/\pi= \alpha_0/\log(k_{\perp}^2) and varying depending upon the treatment of the transverse momentum pole. We also consider the implications for the transverse momentum (k_{\perp}) fluctuations along the emission chains and we obtain an exponential falloff in the relevant \kappa\equiv \log(k_{\perp}^2)-variable, i.e. an inverse power (k_{\perp}^2)^{-(2+\lambda)} with the same parameter \lambda. This is different from the BFKL-result for a fixed coupling, where the distributions are Gaussian in the \kappa-variable with a width as in a Brownian motion determined by ``the length'' of the emission chains, i.e. \log(1/x_B). The results are verified by a realistic Monte Carlo simulation and we provide a simple physics motivation for the change., Comment: 24 pages, 10 supplementary files, submitted to Physical Review D

We have a very limited knowledge about how the confinement mechanism works in processes like $\epea\epe\ra\epq\epqa\ggn\ldots\ggn$, when there are identical colour charges. In this case the partons can be connected by a string or a cluster chain in several different ways. We do not know if in such a situation Nature chooses a particular configuration at random, or if some configuration is dynamically favoured. Also in the perturbative parton cascade we have no well founded recipe for describing the interference effects, which correspond to non planar diagrams and are caused by identical colour charges. We have studied two different models, and are in particular interested in the possibility that a colour singlet gluon system hadronizes isolated from the remainder of the state. Using double tagged events with heavy $\epc\epca$ or $\epb\epba$ quarks, it appears to be possible to find a significant signal, if such events appear in Nature. If this type of (re)connected states appear in Z decays it may also be an indication that reconnection might appear between the decay products of two W's in the reaction $\epea\epe\ra\gwp\gwm\ra\epq_1\epqa_2\epQ_1\epQa_2$ at LEP2. This would be important e.g. for a precision measurement of the W mass.

Previous studies of the physics potential of LEP2 indicated that with the design luminosity of 500 inverse picobarn one may get a direct measurement of the mass of the W-boson with a precision in the range 30 - 50 MeV. This report presents an updated evaluation of the estimated error on the mass of the W-boson based on recent simulation work and improved theoretical input.
